Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z has a stupid name, new trailer

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST

Dibzboz is kind of fun to say, I guess.

Battle of Z is probably a combination of an apology for the Dragon Ball Z Kinect game and a way to cash in on the fact that there is a new Dragon Ball Z movie that officially retcons GT, features a new Super Saiyan level (God!), and a purple Egyptian dog monster man god.

You know what's fun? Trying to remember DBZ plot points off the top of your head. Also, coming to the realization that Android 16 is basically Rutger Hauer.

You can buy Broken Age's soundtrack bundled with the game

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST

Maybe you didn't back Double Fine's famous Broken Age Kickstarter because it had already made more money than you're ever going to make in your life. That's okay. Assuming you still want to play it -- why wouldn't you? -- it's available for pre-purchase on Steam ahead of its January 28 release.

You can also get it bundled with the soundtrack for a pre-purchase price of $27 (normally $30). $4.50 for some sweet tunes? Not bad.

Speaking of good soundtracks you can buy, Tearaway's is on sale now. I love the trend of developers making their games' music easily available for purchase. It just follows the, "let me give you my money" mantra. Related, there's still not an easy way, to my knowledge, for me to give Sony money for the Gravity Rush soundtrack, and I don't feel like dropping $40 to import it. Let me give you my money, Sony.

Mutant Football League will return to Kickstarter

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST

Kickstarter has brought new life to dormant game properties and concepts, and I was among those excited to see headlines about Mutant Football League. Until, like many of you, I got to the part about the project being geared toward mobile with other ports (i.e., the ones we actually wanted) arriving at a later date. What a disaster that turned out to be.

To be fair, the game did raise a sizable amount of pledges -- $141,821 -- but that amount fell far below its minimum funding goal of $750,000. The campaign was all over the place and the sticker shock didn't help. Speaking to Joystiq, organizer and Mutant League creator Michael Mendheim said he led with mobile platforms due to feedback received from developers who had prior success with funding their games through Kickstarter but confirmed that "the backlash to [mobile] was just unbelievable. We were sunk that first day."

Mendheim also told the outlet Mutant Football League will return to Kickstarter later this spring with a much lower funding goal and a focus on PC first and foremost. I hope this second attempt better connects with fans and ultimately gives them what they want out of a new Mutant title.

The gameplay modes of Rambo: The Video Game

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST

A new trailer has been released for Rambo: The Video Game focused on the variety of gameplay contained within. You'll see stealth kills, bits of shooting, environmental destruction and QTE. Yeah, quick-time events are apparently considered a "feature" in Rambo, which ought to give just about anybody pause for reflection.

Valve isn't planning to release its VR hardware

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST

Virtual reality had a big presence at the Steam Dev Days event in Seattle this week -- both from Oculus Rift, as expected, but also from Valve.

The company demonstrated its own prototype VR hardware that, in the words of Tripwire Interactive designer David Hensley, "felt like being in a lucid dream state and very much like a holo deck" and "like an Oculus but a generational leap forward." Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey himself described it as "the best virtual reality demo in the world right now."

So, where do we sign up? We don't. Not yet, anyway. Valve's Michael Abrash says they're "continuing to work with Oculus to drive PC VR forward" having collaborated on tracking for the Crystal Cove prototype, but there aren't currently plans at Valve to release its VR device.

Speaking about the field more generally, Abrash noted that he expects "a great VR system at a consumer price" to happen in 2015 or soon thereafter.

New Majora's Mask glitch lets you freely warp to statues

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST

A glitch in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask allowing Link to warp to owl statues he hasn't activated has been discovered. In this video, Indextic, who took part in uncovering the glitch, walks through the process. It's fairly straightforward but I recommend hearing it from him.

Essentially, players need to hit the "hidden owl" in West Clock Town and no others, and by adjusting their cursor in the pause-screen map before playing the Song of Soaring, they can warp to any of the other statues. Specific cursor locations on the map lead to specific statues, though Indextic has already broken that down in a list viewable here.

Besides being a neat trick from a technical perspective, I'm curious to see how this develops in the speedrunning community. Perhaps this glitch is only the beginning. Exciting!

Chiptuner Dr. Popular to release album on GBA cartridge

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST

Doctor Popular (whom most may know from the Knifetank games) is preparing to unleash his newest chiptune album, Destroy All Presets, unto the world with the help of Kickstarter. Sure, we've all been there, there's a million of those, right? Well, not exactly.

See Doc Pop's new album was made entirely using a musical sequencer for Game Boy and Game Boy Advance called Nanoloop. He's working with the creators of the cartridge to make a special edition of his new album that utilizes the sequencer, so that fans can create their own remixes. The pledge amount for this edition is $88, but there are still a few "early bird special" versions available at the discounted price of only $65. Considering it's coming with the most recent version of Nanoloop and 10 preloaded Doc Pop tracks, that's a steal.

Of course, these will only get made if he makes his goal, and as of this writing, he's got about 26 more days to bring in $3,500. Here's hoping he does, as this is one of the most unique collector's editions I've seen for a release like this, and if it's successful, it's a trend I'd love to see continue.

Leaked Grand Theft Auto V bug log references PC version

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST

More evidence of the long-rumored PC port of Grand Theft Auto V has appeared and, okay, can we just get an official announcement already? A leaked Rockstar bug report makes numerous references to issues specifically relating to a PC version as well as a "lastgen" toggle and DirectX 11. You can see the document for yourself over here.

Considering what modders were able to accomplish with Grand Theft Auto IV's PC release, I'd be all over this. GTA V with all the bells and whistles is something I actively want to experience.

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

Ah DayZ, how I've managed to avoid you for so long, I have no idea. I've heard the stories, watched the videos, and have been amazed, enthralled, and terrified, yet have not taken the leap for myself. Well all that is about to change tonight on Mash Tactics.

Come by and check the show out this evening as I jump into what I do believe, is a zombie filled, pants stealing simulator. Want to help me survive, and show me the ropes, or would you rather troll me to no end, and steal all of my precious beans? The choice is yours tonight as I grab a couple of friends, chug down a couple of beers, fire this game up, and kill off a long week.

Grand Theft Auto V outsells Call of Duty in 2013

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 09:15 AM PST

For the first time since Wii Play (2008), a Call of Duty game was not the number one selling game of the year. In 2013, that honor goes to Grand Theft Auto V, according to the NPD Group. Given that it brought in $800M day one and $1B three days later, this may not be surprising.

Equally unsurprising is that Call of Duty: Ghosts took the number two spot, despite a surprisingly tepid critical reception. Madden NFL 25, Battlefield 4, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag followed. Ghosts and Battlefield 4 were the high-selling software in the month of December.

Hardware sales in 2013 were up 5% thanks to the new consoles, while software sales were down 9% -- and that's despite Nintendo's reported 45% increase in 3DS sales. The Xbox One also sold more in December than the PS4, but the PS4 led combined November and December sales. According to SCE Senior Director of Corporate Communications Dan Race, it's because the PS4 was out of stock in December. It's certainly doing well with 4.2M sold before the end of 2013.

Numbers!

I committed the perfect crime in Rust

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST

I've been playing Rust a lot this past week, slowly building up a fortified home and learning as much as I can about the world. It's a brutal, mean place, even on a server dedicated to player vs. environment play, in that it's just as easy to lose everything you've worked to gain. You can't be killed by another player, but they'll be more than happy to run up and loot your corpse when killed by a zombie or rifle through your stored things if the opportunity arises

Right now, the explosive charge item is just about the most evil element of a PVE server, allowing players to break in and raid shelters for valuables. It's taken me nearly the whole week to find the components, research them and start crafting my own. Here we see me entering a home, robbing it of materials, and then replacing the wall I destroyed to remove the evidence.

Hardline 006: Where's the love for Wii U and PS Vita?

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 08:45 AM PST

On this week's episode of Hardline, the regular crew is back in full force as Dale joins us after marathoning Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. We had a lengthy discussion about the Wii U and PS Vita perpetually needing "just one more game" to make them worth purchasing, or so some commenters say, and what it takes to be able to keep up with games professionally. (Basically: Not getting sucked into any one title, especially not MMOs, for too long.)

The Memory Card .102: The Murder of Master Miller

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

[Back in April of 2007, former Destructoid writer Chad Concelmo started a recurring series called "The Memory Card." The purpose was simple -- to share some of the greatest events in gaming history, and give them the respect they deserve. But in 2011 the series ended with no resurrection date in sight...until now. With Chad's blessing, please join us for Season 6 of the Memory Card - Chris.]

It wouldn't be a true season of the Memory Card for me unless I touched on one of my favorite franchises of all time. You know, that one, filled with fantastic tales of tactical espionage action.

The Metal Gear franchise, Solid or otherwise, is packed full of some of the most emotional moments in all of gaming. Whether it's the first time you encountered Psycho Mantis or the last time you'll ever encounter The Boss, tears and screams of joy have been had over the franchise's many classic entries.

But one particular event stood out for me after playing Metal Gear Solid in late 1998. It was an event that was never shown on-screen, but had a lasting impact on me for years to come. It was the first time a videogame had pulled the wool over my eyes, and as a result, I felt utterly betrayed, and ready for revenge.

It simultaneously fueled my desire to complete my mission, and broke my spirit. That doesn't happen often in a game. Such is the Solid series.

Klei teases Reign of Giants DLC for Don't Starve

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 07:45 AM PST

As if we don't already have enough to worry about in Don't Starve, from the obvious starvation and creeping insanity to tree monsters and whatever the hell this thing is, Klei Entertainment is adding to the list of things that go bump in the night. As announced in this teaser video, the game's next DLC is titled Reign of Giants. Welp, that tells me all I needed to know.

I can't for the life of me tell if that beast is supposed to be a werewolf, a badger, a bear, or some unholy combination of all three, but I do know it's not something I want to encounter in the wild.

Friday Night Fights: Who has the time?

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST

I don't know about the rest of you, but lately I've had almost no time to play games. If it's not my job keeping me busy, what seems like 24 hours a day, it's almost always something else. Field trips, doctor's appointments, birthday parties etc.

I swear, Father Time is purposefully trying to keep me from gaming.

Anyone else feeling this lately? I thought maybe it was me, maybe I was just losing interest but there's just no way, I have so many games that I need to play, want to play and absolutely HAVE to play, that there must be some, supernatural force at work keeping me away.

One day I'll not be so busy though, however today, is not that day.

The Tomb Raider reboot is finally profitable

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 07:15 AM PST

Last year's Tomb Raider reboot has finally reached the land of profitability, despite initially failing to meet the sales targets set by publisher Square Enix. In an interview with Eurogamer, executive producer Scott Amos revealed that the game reached profitability at the end of 2013.

"By the end of last year -- Tomb Raider is in the black. We've crossed the line of profitability for the last-gen and PC versions," Scott explains, which has to be good news for Square Enix as they gear up for the launch of the new "definitive" edition of Tomb Raider for the PS4 and Xbox One.

It's no surprise we're scratching our heads when it comes to working out if a AAA game is truly successful or not; Tomb Raider failed to meet lofty sales targets but was then swiftly granted a follow up. Are publishers really looking at the long-term sales or is it a case of, as it seems to be with Tomb Raider, a sequel to an under-performing but well-loved IP is still a good idea?

"As a franchise, Square Enix is clearly invested in us," Scott concludes. One has to wonder how well that investment would last if the next big Tomb Raider game takes another nine months to break even.

Blizzard toying with idea of selling level boosts in WoW

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

Blizzard is all set to drop its new expansion for World of Warcraft --Warlords of Draenor this year. Late in 2013, they dropped a surprise promotion for the add-on, noting that if you pre-order the game, you can choose one character to boost to level 90 when the game arrives -- which means that you'll be able to start the expansion immediately.

As of now it appears as if if you pre-order the game (which will be available soon according to Blizzard), you'll boost to 90 right away. If you go for the Digital Deluxe or Collector's Edition, you'll also nab your new pet and mount at the same time. They're also toying with the idea of creating a character boost directly (read: buy one) due to "fan demand", so we'll see what happens there.

Sony won't give option to disable DualShock 4 light bar

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST

The DualShock 4 gets a lot of praise, and with good reason. It's sexy. It feels like warm butter melting in your hands. And it's unequivocally better than the DualShock 3, because opinionated people on the Internet said so.

However, like a lot of icons in popular culture, the DualShock has problems too. Under that glossy veneer is a flawed individual, one that just can't seem to hold a charge for an extended period of time. Fans have started taking notice, pointing fingers at the controller's light bar as the culprit.

Asked over Twitter whether the controller a future update allowing the light bar to be disabled for titles that do not utilize it, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida flatly said "no," asserting the "LEDs do not use much" of the DualShock 4's battery.

In the same thread of comments, Yoshida also admitted Sony is aware users are annoyed how the lights cast a glare on the screen. All we can do is keep showing our concern, and hope the DualShock 4 wises up and checks into rehab someday.

Nintendo lowers 2014 Wii U sales forecast from 9M to 2.8M

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 06:15 AM PST

Nintendo has revised its financial forecasts for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014 and the Wii U has taken a substantial hit. The company's sales forecast for the console has gone from 9 million to 2.8 million, while the 3DS forecast dropped from 18 million sales to 13.5 million. Nintendo expected a net income of 55 billion yen, but now it's looking at a net loss of 25 billion yen.

According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, "[Wii U sales] showed some progress in the year-end sales season as we released various compelling titles from the summer onwards, launched hardware bundles at affordable price points and also performed a markdown of the hardware in the U.S. and European markets; however, they fell short of our targeted recovery by a large margin ... In addition, we did not assume at the beginning of the fiscal year that we would perform a markdown for the Wii U hardware in the U.S. and European markets."

At a press conference, Iwata said "We are thinking about a new business structure. Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone. We cannot continue a business without winning. We must take a skeptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each."

Nintendo will have more to say on January 30, 2014 during its Corporate Management Policy Briefing in Tokyo following its third-quarter financial results report.

Review: Two Brothers

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

In Two Brothers, game over isn't the end. Not even close.

Designed to look and play like a Game Boy title, this is an adventure in the vein of classics like Link's Awakening but with a truly bizarre world to call its own. It tells the story of scientist Roy Guarder, who dies alongside his wife in the opening moments only to be brought into what he believes is the afterlife. It's here that he sees wondrous new colors, the likes of which are indescribable to a scientific community he so desperately wants to convince.

Roy is mysteriously able to return from the heavens to his monochromatic world. The only problem is that no one -- well, almost no one -- will believe him. Not without proof. With the help of his brother, Roy sets out to find answers, collect evidence of color, and possibly bring back his beloved wife in a journey that will take him to faraway lands and beyond.

Review: Polk N1 Gaming SurroundBar

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST

I don't have the best history with sound bars. I had this bigger JBL one that sounded nice, but it stopped working. Kaput. I tried to replace it with one of Sony's budget models, but that one sounded so bad that I laughed at it. And I returned it.

I ended up with a discounted Samsung model that you'd probably find on the shelves of any electronics store right now. I hate it. It sounds like someone popped one of my eardrums. The wireless subwoofer is neat, but it sounds like someone mumbling loudly in the next room. It's unplugged and now in one of my closets. Do you want it? You can have it.

Polk sent along one for us to test out. The Polk N1 Surroundbar is a gaming-focused product, and one of the first officially licensed Xbox One products. I wasn't sure about how a gaming-focused soundbar would hold up, but I was pleasantly surprised after spending some time with it.

Which Steam Machine is the best one?

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST

Steam Machine information is starting to roll out, and thanks to Steam Dev Days, even more info is coming in every day. Future Mark has put these systems by the test, rating them by their 3DMark Fire Strike scores from Windows systems with similar hardware.

A total of 14 machines were tested, and after crunching the numbers, they're putting the Origin PC - Chronos on top (price TBA), followed by the Digital Storm - Bolt II ($2,584), and the Webhallen ($1,499). These stats are subject to change based on Steam Machine tweaks, and some of the prices aren't even finalized yet.

But if you're looking at checking out a new system at some point, checking back with this chart would be a good first (of many, hopefully) stops. Or you could just build your own machine (or get a friend to do it) for cheaper, and install SteamOS yourself.

PC Port Report: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Hey everyone! There’s a Platinum Games game out on PC! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Well, I guess since this is their first foray into the world of PC ports, it’s probably a good idea to check and see how well they’ve done.

Other companies haven’t done so well in their PC debut, largely due to a complete misunderstanding of the market and lack of continued support. Luckily, Konami and Platinum Games know the value in patches, and have addressed some of the issues in Metal Gear Rising.

Kamiya considered Mii play for W101, wants it in W102

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

Pretty much everything famed game director Hideki Kamiya says on Twitter shouldn't be taken at face value, but every so often he'll tweet out a sincere take on the industry. Musing on some of the design concepts of Wonderful 101, Kamiya noted that developer Platinum Games "tried" to make it possible for your Mii to join the Wonderful 100 as the "101st" member, but for whatever reason it didn't pan out. He then ominously tweeted that he hopes it can happen in "TW102."

Responding to a fan when asked who he'd want to direct a sequel, Kamiya responded "me." While sales for the game weren't too hot all around, it's clear that he wants to keep the series going in some way -- and I'm sure most of you don't have a problem with that.

Coin-Op Story demo available now

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 02:30 AM PST

Imagine a tribute/love letter to the days of coin operated arcade games made as a metroidvania-style game. With arcade boards as power-ups, and images and noises from vintage machines, this one will pull at your heartstrings... if you're old enough.

Me? I'm old enough. Waaaay old enough. So even the opening shot of this trailer, with the machines in the junkyard, in the rain -- even that got me. Revived by lightning, a generic cabinet named Gen has the ability to take on any kind of card or videogame. Brilliant stuff.

But there's a problem connected to that brilliant idea: copyright issues keep this game from being anything but a free release. So, if you want Coin-Op Story to see release and thrive, consider donating.

I think that if you spend some time with the demo, you'll be willing to drop some quarters in. I played it this morning, and I can tell you that it's full of feels. And the music! It's super early now, but you can already see how good it's going to be.

Here's some concept art for that dead BioShock movie

Posted: 17 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST

The folks over at Comic Book Movie have picked up some concept art for the defunct BioShock film, which was set to be directed by Gore Verbinski, and written by The Last Samurai's John Logan. The project fell apart over the years after Ken Levine pulled the plug following production troubles but some lovely concept art was created for the film, which you can take a gander at in the gallery below.

In many ways it just looks like it was taken straight from the game, which is a good thing. We can't say for sure if the BioShock movie would have been worthy of the franchise or not, but I would have loved to see how it turned out based on this art alone.

Toukiden: The Age of Demons is coming to the PlayStation Vita in February, but for now, you can sit back and watch this anime intro from Studio 4°C. As you can guess it deals with demons galore, and from there, lots of violence ensues.

Overall it's not the most engaging anime short I've seen, but as is usually the case from 4°C, the animation is beautiful. Speaking of 4°C, I can't wait for the third part of the Berserk Golden Arc series to get localized.

HBO Go coming to the PlayStation 3 and the PS4

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST

HBO CEO Richard Plepler has announced that HBO Go is coming to the PS3 soon, with the PS4 following at some point after that. Like other media services you don't need to be a PS+ subscriber to take advantage of it, but you will still need to subscribe to some sort of cable or affiliate service to use Go.

It's a shame HBO hasn't flirted with the idea of a separate "cord cutting" option, because there's a proverbial goldmine of shows on this service like Boardwalk Empire, Curb your Enthusiasm, Deadwood.  Speaking of Go, Girls and True Detective just premiered, and Treme just ended -- in case you're looking for more contemporary shows to watch.

If you've got a passion for EverQuest Next Landmark and you are a native speaker of French, German, or Castilian Spanish, then SOE has a job opportunity for you. The Community Management Department, headed by Linda "Brasse" Carlson, is seeking Community Representatives for each of these languages to work on the upcoming sandbox. The positions are part-time and you work from home (so no need to relocate to San Diego!). If interested, send cover letter and resume to lmcalson@soe.sony.com. Good luck to all who apply!

Some Assembly Required: Pre-NGE SWG's proper sandbox PvP

    Some Assembly Required architectural plans
A few weeks ago I ranted at indie sandbox devs who continue pumping out poorly conceived FFA PvP games. I didn't have any wordcount left at the end of that novella to propose any solutions, so I'm going to do that today.

And hey, it's pretty simple, at least conceptually. All a dev team needs to do is iterate on Star Wars: Galaxies' pre-NGE PvP system.

The Soapbox: Enough with selling alpha tests already!

      Shroud of the Avatar
The dam has burst, restraint has been cast off, and caution has been thrown to the wind. Seemingly overnight, game studios all over the place have thrown the doors open to the general public to get in on alpha testing, usually as a reward for loyalty and financing.

Steam has an entire Early Access section that's dominating the sales charts, offering players a chance to hop right into an anticipated game while it's still in the middle of development. Kickstarter games routinely offer alpha and beta access to their financers as part of their reward structure. Trove, Elite: Dangerous, Shroud of the Avatar, Star Citizen, and EverQuest Next Landmark are among the vanguard of upcoming MMOs that have promised alpha or early access to players willing to shell out a few bucks right now.

It's not enough to covet and chase after a beta key these days; all of the cool kids are in the alpha, apparently. The willingness of developers to wield alpha access as a reward and the enthusiastic acceptance by gamers to literally buy into it has me very concerned that this could poison the industry, the community, and the future of our games.

The Daily Grind: Do you heed or even read Steam MMO reviews?

Pants. This review was for Starbound, btw, not RaiderZ.
As more and more MMOs come to Steam, where user reviews were implemented just a few short months ago, the subject of reviewing MMOs seems relevant once again. 2012's RaiderZ, for example, just launched this week on Steam, and before the first day was even done, the action-MMO had collected 80 reviews, most negative, to go along with its 64/100 metascore. We've talked before about the specific difficulties of reviewing and assigning numerical scores to MMOs, but that doesn't seem to stop gamers from posting (and presumably, reading and heeding) these abbreviated and often nonspecific opinions.

Or does it? Do you read Steam reviews, and if so, do you find they influence your buying and trying decisions, especially when it comes to MMOs?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Defiance chat upgrades coming with February DLC

            Defiance
Trion's latest Defiance dev blog talks up changes to the sci-fi shooter's chat interface. Creative lead Trick Dempsey says that "one of the most frequent requests" from players since the game's launch has been chat improvements, and Trion's in an obliging mood.

In a nutshell, the UI is simpler and "free of the commands/emotes/etc., that bloated the viewport in the previous iteration." When can you get your virtual hands on this fine new chat system? Sometime in February, Dempsey writes. Keep your eyes peeled for the 7th Legion DLC which will feature the chat improvements and "even more steps to improve quality and ease-of-use for Defiance."

The Summoner's Guidebook: Wards win League of Legends

A lot of you have noticed that I've been talking a lot about wards over the past several months. This is for a good reason: Wards win League of Legends! I think that every one of my past wins on Summoner's Rift has been either due to wards or a complete blowout laning phase.

Of those two things, there's one you have almost zero control over, even as a jungler. You can outlane the person you're against, but there's no telling when your opponent is just better than you. If you're a jungler, sometimes the enemy lanes don't give you any openings or your lanes just throw kills away to the enemy jungler. No matter how good you are, someone can always be better than you -- or your allies can be horrible.

However, in Season 4, if you place down a ward, in probably 90% of circumstances you're getting vision for the full duration of the ward. No matter how good the enemy team is, if it moves through that area, you get intel. If it doesn't, you also get intel.

The Guild Counsel: There are no bad players, only bad guild matches

If you had to pinpoint the source of what causes most guild drama, it almost always comes down to the guild's screening process. We've certainly looked at recruiting before and how important it is to create a system that effectively matches up your guild with like-minded players, but all too often, when there is a problem with a new member, the frustration boils over and the finger pointing begins.

Is it the player's fault for being a bad seed, or the guild's fault for poor management and vision? Guild leaders and players often hold long-standing resentment, and you can see it in the comments section here at Massively as well, but it's time for a change. In this week's Guild Counsel, we'll look at why even the "worst" player has a good guild match out there and why popular thinking needs to change when it comes to judging who is "bad" and who is "good."

The Repopulation aiming to fill the MMO non-combat void

                The Repopulation
The Repopulation dev team took to Reddit yesterday to field a bunch of questions relating to the upcoming sci-fi title. While many of the queries came from people who are newly aware of the game, it still made for an interesting discussion if you like MMO sandboxes.

Above & Beyond was pretty open about the fact that it's modeling parts of The Repopulation after Star Wars: Galaxies, particularly the latter game's friendliness toward crafters and other non-combat types.

"If you aren't a combat person, you can make your living in trade skills. Advancing in trade skills is independent of combat and does not force you into a combat role. We have a complex trade skill system which allows for a high degree of customization by mixing and matching components. It also has a high degree of interdependency on others, which we feel is going to drive the economy," the team explained.

Also worth noting is the fact that The Repopulation won't "have caps to the number or mastery of skills, so you can invest in each skill line how you see fit."

As we heard yesterday, part of Star Trek Online's Season 8.5 will be devoted to revamping a dozen early episodes from the game in order to bring them up to par with later efforts. Cryptic Designer Jesse Heinig wrote a dev blog explaining what these changes will entail for the Federation's Klingon War story arc.

"Rather than turn one or two more episodes into feature episodes, though, we've chosen to go through and make noticeable improvements on all of them," Heinig explained. "The stories remain the same and much of the gameplay is still there, but we've tweaked the missions to be faster, more dynamic, and more visually interesting."

The revamped episodes will take advantage of better encounter pacing, removal of unneeded encounters, accomodation for player ships with cloaks, additional art and environments, cleaned-up dialogue, career-specific options and rewards, and fly-out messages from NPCs to enhance storytelling.

Hearthstone promises fewer card changes in open beta

                  Hearthstone
All CCG and TCG players fear "the big nerf" that will change a beloved card, and in turn, an entire deck. However, such changes and tweaks are part of any card game, and in a blog post today, Lead Designer Eric Dodds explained the team's philosophy behind keeping Hearthstone balanced.

Dodds said that such changes need to be made when cards cause non-interactive games, are frustrating to play against, are causing confusion, aren't intuitive enough, are too strong compared to other cards with a similar cost, or are too weak. "Hearthstone is at its most fun when you're solving an interesting puzzle each turn," he wrote. "Your opponent's minions, your minions, and the cards in your hand are all pieces to this puzzle, and when your opponent removes parts of the puzzle, it can be less fun to play."

Even with these reasons, Dodds promised that the team plans to make "very few card changes" when Hearthstone goes into open beta. "Giving you confidence in your cards and the play environment is very important to us, and each card change we make potentially undermines that confidence," he said.

Now where's that flourescent green Bat-suit?
So you're max level in DC Universe Online, and you have a lot of different options available to you. You have a setup you like to use for dealing damage, a setup for healing teammates, even a setup for when you absolutely need to get across an entire zone in less than three minutes. Swapping between those is a bit more taxing, though. Wouldn't it be nice if you could just instantly swap between a full loadout and appearance with just one click?

Yes, that's exactly what Armories do: they allowing players to save an alternate build that can be accessed out of combat instantly. A free armory slot is given to every character following a quest, with additional slots (for additional builds) available in the marketplace for $6 (or less if bought in bulk). Each player base can hold four slots for a grand total of 16 Armory slots, giving you plenty of space to store all the alternate builds you could ever want.

MMO vets have a reputation. No, I don't mean the basement thing, I mean we're often seen as being afraid of change. Back in our day, we had to wait an hour for a raid boss to spawn, and we liked it!

But ironically, the free-to-play push has turned MMO gamers against anything said to be releasing with a sub, as seen with the recent backlash against The Elder Scrolls Online.

So I polled the Massively staff members for their opinions on the changes we see in our favorite genre. Is there anything they're particularly afraid to see as they glare into the crystal ball?
