Strike Suit, Hoard, and Toki Tori 2+ join Humble Bundle X Posted: 14 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST The promised extra titles for Humble Bundle X arrived today. Customers who pay above the average price of around $5.30 will now also get Toki Tori 2+, Strike Suit Zero, and Hoard, plus Reus and Surgeon Simulator 2013, which were the original beat-the-average bonuses. The base offering is still a tremendous value, offering To the Moon, Papo & Yo, Joe Danger 2: The Movie, and Runner2 on Steam for as low as $1. Really, though, you may as well just go for the bundle's full line-up. There's still a whole week before the offer ends. |
The new Dark Souls II trailer is very, very noisy Posted: 14 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST A new trailer for Dark Souls II has just hit the interwebs and it is thrilling. Huge enemies, vast and inhospitable environments, it's sticking to the playbook and that's just fine. The only problem I have with it is that it's so damn noisy. There's a whole bunch of talking going on in the latter half. I suspect they are things that would have considerable interest pique-ing potential, but I don't know because I can't make out anything over the noise of the score and sound effects. It's like I have a teenager in the house, they really like orchestral music for some reason, and all I want to do is watch my damn show. Turn that racket down. But the demon-horses? Terrifying. |
Muramasa Rebirth Tales of the Nekomata DLC is out now Posted: 14 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST Muramasa Rebirth is one of the growing list of reasons why I will probably cave and buy a PlayStation Vita at some point. It just got a bit more enticing with today's release of the Tales of the Nekomata expansion in the PlayStation Store, the first of four add-ons already released in Japan. It sounds beefy, with a wholly separate story of a ceremonial tea set delivery gone horribly wrong and the cat-demon who seeks revenge; adorable, kitty revenge. Along with the new story comes a new fighting system, as lead character Okoi has natural weapons in the form of claws and access to a range of new skills and demon arts. Plus the package includes a mode which allows the player to take on any of the bosses in Muramasa Rebirth using Okoi and her skills, which is pretty neat, I guess. Fishy Tales of the Nekomata is available now in the US for $4.99 and will arrive in Europe on January 22. |
Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver music added to iTunes Posted: 14 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST The Pokémon Company has released its latest game soundtrack on iTunes. This time, it's the Super Music Collection for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, which is the one I've been waiting for this whole time. I don't think I'm alone in that regard, either. Though I had played the prior games like most everyone else my age, it wasn't until Silver and Gold back in 2000 that I became an utter Pokémon fanatic. That sense of fandom has wavered over the years, but those remain my favorite titles in the franchise, hands down. Probably always will. The cheerful themes to Goldenrod City Azalea City are forever burned into my mind, and I appreciate that the classic renditions of these songs are also included in the compilation. Go on, treat your ears to some terrific game music. |
GameStop reports figures for 2013 holiday period Posted: 14 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST GameStop still seems to be doing pretty damn well as a business. The major videogames retailer has announced sales figures from the nine-week holiday period, totaling $3.15 billion dollars globally, an increase of 9.3% from 2012's numbers. Most of the credit is being attributed to the new console launches, as one might expect. Sales of new hardware increased 99.8% over last year, with GameStop boasting the highest attachment rate for software and accessories of any retailer. But while hardware is on the rise, new software sales for prior generation hardware dropped a greater-than-expected amount, resulting in an overall decline of 22.5%. Pre-owned game sales increased by 7%, bolstered by large inventory range and price reductions for older consoles. While brick-and-mortar still seems to be GameStop's bread and butter, its online business is seeing significant growth as well. Online sales increased 57% over the same period last year, bolstered by site traffic which ranked them among the top 20 online retailers. |
This engine could mean massive new strategy games Posted: 14 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST Leveraging AMD's Mantle technology, Oxide Games has come up with a new game engine intended for real-time strategy titles on PC and consoles called Nitrous that can handle up to 5,000 AI- or physics-driven objects (like laser beams) on-screen simultaneously. "Take the most complex scene you've ever seen in StarCraft II and multiply it by 10," Oxide founder Dan Baker told Engadget. The company has demonstrated the engine's capabilities in a simulation, Star Swarm, which looks impressive and does a good job of showing the sheer scale of it all. According to the video, three strategy games powered by Nitrous are in development. For as long as I can remember playing real-time strategy games, I've had exactly one "tactic," if you could be generous enough to call it that: create a giant army, and if it's not powerful enough to overcome the enemy troops, well, that's "gg." Micromanaging has never been one of my strong suits, and I can only imagine keeping track of thousands of units unless they were cleverly grouped together or weren't under my direct control. Exciting possibilities, though. Next-gen strategy game engine lets you control an army of 5,000 units at one time [Engadget] |
Chibi-Robo's buttcheek censorship controversy Posted: 14 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST In case you missed yesterday's episode of Podtoid, or you're one of those people who won't do anything for more than ten minutes, here's a brief excerpt in which Jonathan Holmes shocks the rest of the cast with news of Nintendo's fascist removal of cartoon buttocks from Chibi-Robo!: Photo Finder. |
Umm, yeah, it's way too early to pre-order Evolve Posted: 14 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST Look, Turtle Rock Studios' Evolve sounds appealing to me. It's got players taking on the role of either a group of monster hunters or the formidable beast they're hunting. It's by the Left 4 Dead folks. There's enough of a premise here that I'll be watching out for the game. What I won't be doing, however, is pre-ordering -- not when we haven't even seen footage yet. Hell, there's barely any screenshots out there for public consumption. And it's not even that the pre-order bonus -- an alternate skin for the Goliath, shown above, and a post-release monster character -- is a bad offering. C'mon. Do we even have a vague idea of when this is releasing? Give us some breathing room here, Take-Two. |
Kim Swift's Soul Fjord out this month, still Ouya only Posted: 14 Jan 2014 09:45 AM PST The new game Airtight Games and Kim Swift (Portal, Quantum Conundrum) joint, Soul Fjord, will be released on January 28 exclusively for the Ouya. A year ago, the exclusive inspired faith in the platform. After subsequent Ouya backlash and eventual cold indifference, it just seems a bit sad to see the 70's soul viking game release to the Ouya. It would be nice if, like Towerfall, this can get itself extricated from the Ouya eventually, but Ouya funded development so it looks like it's stuck. Hopefully I can at least buy the Austin Wintory (Journey, Banner Saga) soundtrack separately. Love me some good funk. |
It's time for another Battlefield 4 update Posted: 14 Jan 2014 09:15 AM PST As part of an ongoing attempt to fix its game as much as possible before pumping out any more DLC, DICE has launched another update for Battlefield 4 on PC, as well as updates for PS3 and PS4 intended to improve general stability. On top of the usual tweaks and bug fixes, such as one where players would find themselves spawning under the map when deploying on Lancang Dam, this latest update also includes several modifications for jets -- these range from an increase in damage to a few changes in their handling attributes. |
Tearaway's lovely soundtrack is on sale now Posted: 14 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST You bought Tearaway, right? What am I saying? Of course you did. It was an exemplary new IP like we always ask for, a triumph of imagination and creativity, a boon to the Vita, and as low as $20. There would be little reason not to. Well, then you definitely know firsthand just how good the idiosyncratic soundtrack is, including a Paprika parade-like fanfare, folky dubstep, and more. You can buy it on the PlayStation Store today for $8. Pretty good price for an OST. |
The Forest will be an open-world survival horror game Posted: 14 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST The Forest is one of the more intriguing titles to come through Steam's Greenlight program but all we've known about the title itself is that it's an open-world horror game. Set in a forest. Thankfully we've got some more details from a Eurogamer interview with developer Endnight Games. Players will control the survivor of a plane crash, lost in a lush wilderness who just has to survive. Trouble is there's some pesky cannibals in the forest and they're peckish. "We wanted to create a world where we could drop the player into and give them free range to do whatever they want," explains creative director Ben Falcone. "Similar to something like Minecraft where a lot of the fun comes from decisions that you make." Endnight is attempting something really ambitious here; an open-world survival game that has an ending, but not necessarily one you'll find. Players will compete for leaderboard status and will see who can last the longest. My main concern with the idea of melding a vast playing area and horror comes from pacing; really good horror works when you get periods of calm before sharp jolts of terror. Giving the player freedom to explore and take the game at their own pace might be rewarding but may lessen the impact of the scarier aspects of The Forest. Still I'm excited to see how more of the game and there's a beta due in a few months that I'd like to get my hands on. Ambitious open-world horror game The Forest detailed [Eurogamer] |
Here's how Creative Assembly landed Alien: Isolation Posted: 14 Jan 2014 08:15 AM PST When the rumors first got out that Creative Assembly was working on Alien: Isolation, I wasn't concerned so much as I was curious how the studio landed the project. Alistair Hope and Jude Bond spoke about exactly that in an interview with Edge. The duo led a "handful of guys" to create a proof-of-concept survival-horror game that "went a bit viral within Sega, and suddenly it seemed like this pipe dream of making a game based on the original Alien [film] started to get some momentum," according to Hope. While the company has in recent years become best known for its strategy franchise Total War -- "We used to make sports games, until we didn't," noted Bond -- the studio has "had to hire for this project ... We've been very picky." "Now we've got our own floor and we're about 100 strong, and building the team has been a bittersweet tale, I suppose," Hope elaborated. "There have been some British devs that have had to close, and we benefited from that. At least we could find work for some very talented people." Review: Dark Souls: Design Works Posted: 14 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST The art of the Souls series blows me away. It truly is an adventurous experience, because although the style is consistent, you literally never know what you're going to walk into next. Whether it's a series of decadent libraries or a murky, poisonous swamp, every single area in a Souls game looks uniquely haunting. Dark Souls: Design Works is an art book that collects most of that beautiful madness in one place, and although it's lacking in many areas, it is pretty much a must-have for fans of the series. |
Videogame Clubhouse: OH MY GOD NIDHOGG IS SO GOOD Posted: 14 Jan 2014 07:45 AM PST I'm going to cut to the chase with this one: Nidhogg is really great. I've been waiting for this game since it first started winning awards back in 2010. In the interim I sort of forgot that Nidhogg existed. Oops. Did you forget all about the two-player fencing simulator? Well fear not! Phil and I have your back! We're going to stab each other (not like that you guys) for two hours over on the Videogames Clubhouse! That's right for two American hours we'll test out the multiplayer, the single-player, and anything else you people want to see. It all goes down at 2:00pm Pacific over on Dtoid.tv. You're not going to want to miss this one. |
The Wolf Among Us Episode 2 will be out in February Posted: 14 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST After really enjoying the first episode of Telltale Games' The Wolf Among Us, I've been wanting to play more. I've been hankering to know how Bigby carries out his search for the serial killer who has been plaguing Fabletown but at least we now know we'll be getting the second episode in the first week of February. In a forum thread, Telltale president Kevin Bruner announced the anticipated launch of Episode 2 and that there had been a bit of a rough patch getting it completed. "It's been a struggle to get this episode out, for a variety of reasons," Kevin writes. "We are very concerned about the long delay for this episode, but this is one of those occasions where several things conspired against us." Kevin also posted the news on a reddit thread that questioned the lack of information about the second episode of the series. I have to be honest, I was disappointed when November and December came around without a new episode, especially after the ending of Faith. |
First act of Broken Age hits Steam on January 28 Posted: 14 Jan 2014 07:15 AM PST It's been a longer-than-expected wait for Double Fine's Broken Age, but it's nearly ready. Well, part of it. The first act of the Kickstarter-funded adventure title releases on January 28, 2014 for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with iOS, Android, and Ouya versions to follow at a later date. Crowdfunding backers should have received Act 1 today -- check your email. Once it was decided Broken Age would be split into two acts -- the second of which will arrive as a free update once completed -- there was talk of a Steam Early Access release, but Double Fine has since decided against this approach. "For various logistical reasons, and because we believe Act 1 is a polished and satisfying piece of content in its own right, Broken Age will be a standard Steam release that includes a 'Season Pass' granting access to Act 2 once it is complete." "Coming back to the genre has been like finding an old jacket in a box in your garage that you haven't worn in twenty years, but once you shake the dust off and put it on you realize it's an amazing jacket and it still fits, and once you patch the holes in the pockets it could easily take a spot in your main jacket rotation," said CEO Tim Schafer. "Oh, and also, in one of the pockets was three and a half million dollars." My primary motivation for contributing to the Kickstarter was to see the creation process as detailed in 2 Player Productions' documentary series (which has been entirely worth it), but I have to say, this trailer has me pumped to play the game. Well done. |
Holy flying Shenmue reference: Sonic Racing Ryo DLC on PC Posted: 14 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST I've never been more happy about being trolled than when I saw Shenmue protagonist Ryo Hazuki as DLC for the mobile version of Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed last year. The trolling continues with the PC release of this DLC, now up on Steam. Now you can see Ryo's ridiculous transforming arcade cabinet vehicle in high resolution. I've still never purchased DLC, but that $1.59 seems like it would be worth the laughs. |
Yasumi Matsuno launches Kickstarter for Unsung Story Posted: 14 Jan 2014 06:45 AM PST Sometime after the release of Crimson Shroud, strategy RPG mastermind Yasumi Matsuno teased a brand new title he was in the process of developing. As the director of such titles as Tactics Ogre, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Final Fantasy XII; many fans were excited to see what he planned. Now, we finally get the chance to see his efforts with the reveal of his Kickstarter project, Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians. Planned for the PC/Mac and mobile platforms, Unsung Story is an SRPG title with a deep focus on storytelling and customization. This also marks the first time Matsuno is working alongside a Western developer -- and going off their pitch video, they all seem to be on the same page with regards to their vision for this title. With a funding goal set at $600,000, they also have an ambitious number of stretch goals to encourage fans to donate. Such as expanded content, PS Vita support, co-op play, and also the goal to bring Final Fantasy music composer Hitoshi Sakimoto onto the project. It all looks very interesting. Yasumi Matsuno is a very talented developer, and that alone has got me jazzed for what he's got in store. For more information on the game, and their ambitions, check out their Kickstarter page. Surprising no one, DayZ reaches one million sales Posted: 14 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST Last we heard, the standalone alpha release of DayZ had passed 800,000 copies sold. It's only been about a week since and the game has reached an important milestone: one million sales. If you were wondering what kind of numbers a title would need to maintain a position at the top of the Steam charts, that's it -- a million purchases in its first month. Impressive. Designer Dean Hall, who broke the news, said "The best part about DayZ's success, for me, is that I can now make all the games I've always wanted but that everyone said was too niche. (After this is done, of course.) And, really, that's the dream right there. How has your experience with DayZ been so far? I've decided to hold off, having opted to play Rust which, as it turns out, is for the best -- I don't think I could handle playing both at the same time. Not while both titles are in such early states. |
El Bundle Fantástico de Guacamelee! está en PSN ahora Posted: 14 Jan 2014 06:15 AM PST Guacamelee! came out early last year, and ended up being my second-favorite game of 2013, with its bright colors, unique setting, and satisfying brawler combat all wrapped up into a Metroidvania. I recommend it whenever it comes up, but if you have been holding out, now is a great time to get into it on Sony platforms. As reported on the PlayStation Blog, the Bundle Fantástico is out now, and it includes quite a bit of good stuff. In addition to the game (which is a cross-buy for PlayStation 3 and Vita), the Bundle Fantástico adds El Diablo's Domain trial DLC, the bonus costume pack DLC, the original soundtrack, and a dynamic theme for your Sony XMB. Basically, it has every additional piece of content available for five bucks more than the game alone. Not a bad deal! You can save some guacamoola. Wii U development drama: Nintendo's box is a Nintendo-box Posted: 14 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST There was a bit of gloom and Nintendoom over the weekend. An anonymous, chronological account of Wii U development hit Eurogamer. It begins as early as Nintendo touring studios for feedback on its next console venture and ends with a seemingly stressful, rushed launch day release. None of it is particularly cheery, as the developer laments being "stuck" trying to make a game for an underpowered system amidst ever-changing development kits and poor communication. It fits the narrative well enough. Nintendo is struggling to sell the Wii U. Even the likes of EA doesn't seem terribly interested in developing for it because a low install base can mean low sales. Then, of course, there was response to the anonymous article. Apparently, "the Wii U is not more difficult to develop for than other platforms," says Renegade Kid's (Mutant Mudds) Jools Watsham. Can't everyone be right? |
It took Maxis six months to rework SimCity for offline Posted: 14 Jan 2014 05:45 AM PST In a blog post, SimCity single-player mode lead engineer Simon Fox has written about the lengthy process required to properly move away from multiplayer. "By the time we're finished we will have spent over six and a half months working to write and rewrite core parts of the game to get this to work," he explained. "Even things that seem trivial, like the way that cities are saved and loaded, had to be completely reworked in order to make this feature function correctly. "I wish it were as simple as flipping a switch and telling the game to communicate with a dummy client rather than our server, but it's more than that. Entire calculations had to be rewritten in order to make the game function correctly." The full post, linked below, covers more specifics. Not that Maxis will get much sympathy for something many players feel should have been there in the first place, but, interesting to know. Offline play is "in the final stages of testing" before it'll be available through Update 10 for SimCity. I'm still apathetic about the whole situation to the point where I may never play the game, online or off. It's sure looking that way. Engineering SimCity for Offline Play [SimCity] |
Review: Nyrius Aries Pro Wireless HD for Laptops Posted: 14 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST Connecting your PC (or game console) to your television isn't necessarily difficult, but the cabling can be a bit of a hassle. The HDMI outputs on better laptops and most GPUs make it easier by sending both video and audio over one cable, but an optimal setup would still require Ethernet cabling as well. And if your PC is far away from your television, the situation gets a bit messier. What if you could just leave your PC in its room and send the audio and video signals wirelessly? Nyrius' Aries Pro lets you do exactly that. I spent a week with the set in my home, trying it out on console gaming, PC gaming, and a bit of web surfing. Read on for our full review |
Lord of the Rings Online licensed renewed throughout 2017 Posted: 14 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST Renewing licenses can be tricky, and in the case of Lord of the Rings Online, fans were nervous that they wouldn't get to keep playing the game for much longer. A recent scare happened when Massively reported that LOTRO had no further plans for merging servers, and many speculated that the game would shut down in the near future. At that point community manager Rick Heaton stepped in to clarify the situation, stating, "We have said as far back as July of 2013, we plan to support LOTRO for many years to come. I really want to be as clear as possible on this subject to avoid any further confusion or misunderstanding. The license was renewed. We have an agreement that runs through 2017." Facepunch talks about what's next for Rust Posted: 14 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST In a Rust development update, Facepunch Studios' Garry Newman wrote that "Sales have been strong. Stronger than strong. We really have been knocked on our arses by sales. Our plan was to release the alpha on to Steam in a low-key way and slowly build up steam until the game was in a decent state. But our player counts have exploded our wildest dreams." Between this, DayZ, and Starbound, it feels like the Steam Early Access floodgates have opened. I'm still not sure how I feel about that. Some of Facepunch's priorities right now are improved server and client performance, better support for Mac and Linux users, possibly removing zombies before players become too attached to them, and stopping cheaters. And then there's discussion of adding defensive options. Just last night I was playing Rust with Conrad -- you truly do want friends in a game like this -- and we got to talking about how much we'd love to have traps to take on home invaders. "We want to find solutions that allow the defending players to find innovative solutions to attacks," said Newman. "Ideally solutions that don’t involve putting a million doors in your house, or building a maze around it." Even in its bare-bones state, Rust is without a doubt one of the more interesting games I've played in years. Now, is it fun? I'm not so sure. It can be, but it can also be deeply frustrating. Cloudbuilt is coming to Steam by way of Rising Star Games Posted: 14 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST A while ago I brought a game called Cloudbuilt to your attention, and I called it a cross between Mega Man and Mirror's Edge. It looks like it's been gaining some steam, as Rising Star Games (who published No More Heroes in Europe) has stepped in to help bring it to Steam this year. The full game will feature 20 levels with "different routes" in each, four endings, branching level selection, and an "organic" learning curve. If you want to see how great Cloudbuilt really looks, check out the new screenshots in the gallery below! Cloudbuilt Announced! [Rising Star Games] |
Oculus Rift has some competition: meet GameFace Posted: 14 Jan 2014 03:30 AM PST Back in 2012 we first heard about the vision of Oculus Rift: to make virtual reality a relevant conversation again by bringing the technology up to today's standards, with low-latency head tracking for optimal immersion. Since then, it has made quite a splash for those fortunate enough to try it, and although it is still a niche piece of hardware, others have taken notice of the hype. One such entity that has taken notice is GameFace Labs, which showed off its own VR headset at CES. This is not a straight copy of the more famous virtual reality hardware; GameFace and Oculus Rift have a few notable differences. On the plus side, GameFace is completely wireless, allowing players to stand and turn freely in their environments. As a minus, it is running on Android and is therefore limited in its processing power compared to a PC. Engadget has a good hands-on preview of the headset from CES 2014, describing the differences between it and Oculus Rift. On the official GameFace website, GameFace Labs extols the virtues of being Android-based, and enumerates developers committed to the project, which include indie darlings Mojang and Halfbrick, among others. Hearthstone receives last major beta update Posted: 14 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST Blizzard has announced that it is delaying the Hearthstone beta, but they've also dropped the last major beta update, meaning the game could be coming sooner than later. The patch is mostly a balancing act, nerfing the Mage and buffing a few cards like Unleash the Hounds. Blizzard notes that it's basically crunch time now, and any updates will be minor ones involving cards. Hopefully the game will launch soon and more people can get into it. It's a pretty fantastic card game, and I know some people are reserved due to the beta status -- even if there won't be any data wipes. Hearthstone Update: Upcoming Changes 1/13 [Battle.net] |
Guild Wars 2's Origins of Madness out on January 21 Posted: 14 Jan 2014 02:30 AM PST ArenaNet is paving the way for the end of the current main storyline. Origins of Madness is the first big event of the year for Guild Wars 2. It's coming out on January 21 and this will see players fighting against Scarlet Briar once again. One of Scarlet's big new monsters is the Twisted Marionette, a giant robot of mass destruction. Along with that is the new Great Jungle Wurm, a hug multi-headed creature that will require multiplayer players to take it down. |
Magic: The Gathering is getting a film series Posted: 14 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST The Hollywood Reporter just dropped a bomb on the Magic: The Gathering world -- it appears as if 20th Century Fox has bought the rights to Magic to produce a 'massive franchise.' A direct comparison was made to Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. The talent involved ranges from writers and producers of the X-Men films, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Sherlock Holmes, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Um, what? Magic is a pretty massive franchise, and the fact that it's lasted this long is a true testament to its staying power. One film I'd understand with the right marketing, but an epic series? This is definitely an instance of "let's wait and see" if I've ever seen one. Fox to Bring 'Magic: The Gathering' to the Big Screen [Hollywood Reporter via Game Informer] |
Posted: 14 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST Nidhogg has always been a mysterious turbo-indie game that only the cool kids could play at secret underground events in the 13th hour (NO, I WASN’T JEALOUS). Anyway, we plebeians finally have a chance to own and play the game whenever we want! Even online! It’s easy to see why Nidhogg has always been regarded as a game that you simply must play if given the chance, but that isn’t to say that it’s official release isn’t without some rough edges. Indie rough edges. |
Posted: 14 Jan 2014 12:10 AM PST An animal is most dangerous when backed into a corner. Given little choice, and with everything on the line, the imperiled can go to great lengths just to continue drawing breath. Desperation is a terrifyingly powerful thing. The Banner Saga, perhaps above all else, evokes such feelings of extreme vulnerability. The tale follows a caravan of refugee vikings. Driven from their lands by a horde of demonic marauders, the survivors are forced to wander from one devastated village to the next. Threatened by the elements, dwindling supplies, and even other men; they're faced with a seemingly endless string of dire circumstances in a world that's quickly going to hell. |
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition comparison video Posted: 14 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST Our friends over at IGN just posted a video comparing Tomb Raider to Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, along with an interview with with developer Scot Amos. It's a nice interview, but it's a lot of preaching to the choir. I was curious about what someone who has no vested interest in being at the forefront of the technological innovation may think of the improvements in Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition --someone who can tell the difference between DVD and VHS picture quality, but who isn't going to necessarily value something more just because it has "more graphics per inch". So I asked my wife to give me some commentary on the differences she perceived between the two versions. See her type-written comments below. |
A handy tip to clear up HDD space if you use Steam a lot Posted: 13 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST So every time you download and install a game from Steam it downloads a DirectX redistributable package. Once your game is installed, that redistributable file just sits on your hard drive useless, taking up space. A hundred megabyte file may not be much, but if you're a heavy Steam user these files will add up over time. Enter TikiOne Steam cleaner, a handy tool that will list every redistributable package stored on your Steam directory that you can then easily remove. Boom, freed up memory for more games. Or porn. In the case you need to reinstall a game or there's an update to one, Steam will detect you're missing the file and redownload as needed. Some of you may already be well aware about this, good for you! But I had no clue until this reddit thread so I wanted to share in case there's a ton of you out there that were as clueless as I was. |

Codemasters released a new endless racer for mobile Posted: 13 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST Codemasters has stealthily released an endless racer for the App Store. It's called Drive: USA, and it's only available through the Singapore App Store at the moment. It sure looks like a racing game, eh? I do find it a little funny that after so many endless runners, this is the first time I'm seeing one with cars. I mean, it looks ... alright. Eh, it's free, don't complain. |
