Titanfall multiplayer limited to 12 players Posted: 07 Jan 2014 03:30 PM PST Well looks like Vince Zampella's Twitter is going to be the ongoing source for all Titanfall news. His latest reveal is that Titanfall will support a maximum of six players on each team, so 12 total real players. Vince added that this "turned out to be the best balance with AI for us." Remember, the maps are filled with AI allies and opponents as you're playing, so multiplayer matches do feel like a large scale endeavor. It's a bit disappointing at first hearing the low player count, but based on my hands-on time with the game this may work out in the best interest for players. The maps are very open, and too many players could potentially make things too frustrating as enemies can literally come at you from any direction. @VinceZampella [Twitter, via Team Beyond] |
HAWP, Freddie Wong team up for DKC Tropical Freeze video Posted: 07 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST A few months ago, Nintendo held a Wii U video challenge, asking 30 of YouTube's top content creators to produce short videos inspired by Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD. After viewing all the selected videos, Nintendo selected the Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'? team to work with fellow YouTube personality Freddie Wong on a short film inspired by Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The short film is set to debut at the Nintendo Chalet in Park City, UT during the Sundance film festival at 10:00am on Thursday, January 16, where visitors will also be able to play titles such as Wii Fit U and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds while hiding out from the cold. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (the game) is set to hit Wii U on February 21. |
Man forces stepson to play Grand Theft Auto IV Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:30 PM PST Police in Japan's Kyoto Prefecture have arrested a man for allegedly forcing his stepson to play Grand Theft Auto for hours at a time. According to the allegation, 28-year-old Maasa Kawabata would wait until the boy's mother, Kawbata's wife, would leave the house, then force the nine-year-old to play hour-long stretches. It is also alleged that Kawabata would subject the child to slew of verbal insults including calling him an idiot and moron, in addition to telling to boy to kill himself. The boy's mother, who married Kawabata in October, began to suspect something, moving herself and her son out of the house after her son began to complain about headaches, nausea, and stomach pains. Doctors have now diagnosed the boy with Dysautonomia, a condition that alters body functions such as heart rate, digestive movements, and blood pressure; an alleged result of the boy's stress and mental abuse during these play session. 9歳児に残酷ゲームを強要、容疑で男逮捕…京都 [Yomuri Online via MSN Japan] |
Steam leak reveals BattleBlock Theater, Killing Floor 2 Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST Another Steam database leaked occurred tonight, and it's revealed quite a few games that may see a future on Valve's platform. Xbox Live Arcade exclusives BattleBlock Theater and Happy Wars are potentially coming to the PC. Plus the 3DS and PlayStation Vita game, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, is coming to the personal computer with an HD reskin. Here's the standouts from the list. Check out the full captured image in the gallery:
Half Minute Hero 2 was never even released here in the US! It's worth noting that Marvelous AQL asked fans last year if they'd be interesting in seeing a PC release. This leak doesn't mean a definitive confirmation of future release of course, but the prospects are good. RUMOR: Killing Floor 2, Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate HD, etc leaked on Steam [NeoGAF] |

Final Fantasy XIV is free to log in this weekend Posted: 07 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST Square Enix wants to show off the new content that the latest patch brought to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Accordingly, account holders who have let their subscription become inactive are able to login for free this weekend. The free login period runs from Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 12:00 a.m. PST to Monday, January 13, 2014 at 12:00 a.m. PST. Allowing people whose accounts have lapsed into inactivity come back for a free taste of the new content is a pretty good idea. It's kind of like what drug dealers do. |
Posted: 07 Jan 2014 12:30 PM PST Because licensed games still get made, iOS and Android gamers will be able to download and play the new RoboCop game, based on the remake of the cult classic film. The game is a free download, and while it doesn't look too terrible, it doesn't look very good either. Honestly, I'm surprised it's not an Xbox Live Arcade or PlayStation Network download, like other licensed shovelware such as the Expendables 2, R.I.P.D., and Pacific Rim games. Still, the fact that it's free helps that it does resemble the best PS2 game that never was. Well, there was an Xbox game in the UK based on the original property...kind of wish this was that. So, who's excited for this one? Yes, that's a loaded question. |
Creative Assembly talks about goals for Alien: Isolation Posted: 07 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST We've already talked a lot about Alien: Isolation today. Like, so much. We've shared the game's announcement, a hands-on preview, and what Isolation has in common with Colonial Marines. So, we're going to stop yammering for a bit, and let Creative Assembly tell its side of the story. Have a listen as key developers share the team's vision and goals for its run at an Alien game. Oh, and as you're falling asleep tonight, try not to think about the possibility of a Xenomorph on the ceiling or under your bed, and how you would never even know. |
Here's 2014's first batch of Greenlight titles Posted: 07 Jan 2014 11:30 AM PST Now that we're fully into 2014, it's time for Valve to announce another batch of games and software packages that have been approved from Greenlight. Another 50 titles have been announced for release, taking the total number of Greenlit items up to 387. There's maybe a greater variety of games in this batch that previous lists; I felt that Valve was prioritizing quantity over quality. Zoe Quinn's Depression Quest will now appear on Steam, along with the abstract stealth title Tangiers. There's also the platformer The Note from Turkish studio Motamot as well as the surreal Manos: The Hand Of Fate. Hopefully more games that have previously been greenlit will be released soon, I'm dying to get a hold of games like EtherOne and The Forest. |
VVVVVV coming to Vita, iOS, and Android this year Posted: 07 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST Terry Cavanagh's wonderful platformer VVVVVV will become even more widespread this year. In a blog post detailing his existing game projects, which all seem to be in various states of completion, the designer said to expect the game on PlayStation Vita, iPhone, iPad, Android, and Ouya later this year. "And, if I can manage it, all at the same time. This will very likely be the last thing I ever do with VVVVVV, and I wanna go out with a bang!" Another of his games, Halting Problem, hasn't seen much work since the Independent Games Festival submission deadline last year. "There are a few ideas at its heart that I think have potential to be very, very special, if I'm good enough to bring them to life," he wrote. "I haven't forgotten about this game. It feels the way Super Hexagon did, the way VVVVVV did, and the way At a Distance and Nexus City did -- that idea that won't go away. When I come back to this game, I don't want there to be any distractions-- I can feel that working on this one is going to be all consuming, that's it's going to take everything I have." I have to imagine most of Destructoid's audience has played VVVVVV but, if not, your list of excuses is dwindling. That PS Vita release is going to be yet another version for the collection. PlayStation Now hands-on impressions Posted: 07 Jan 2014 10:33 AM PST Sony set up a media mixer today outside of CES to let us get a better look at PlayStation Now, their new streaming technology they announced this morning. The same games were available on the Vita and Bravia television demo stations: God of War: Ascension, Puppeteer, The Last of Us, and Beyond: Two Souls. |
Lightning Returns: FF XIII Doomsday Clock explained Posted: 07 Jan 2014 10:30 AM PST A new developer diary has been released for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, focused on the game's "Doomsday Clock," which ticks down over the course of the game's 13 days. Players will have a limited time in which to achieve goals necessary to complete the story, almost certain to be a divisive mechanic among players. The clock also dictates NPC behavior, with Square Enix pushing that old, "the living world carries on around you," chestnut with characters having daily activities they participate in. I love the Doomsday Clock, but I'm sure it's going to be a problem for a lot of people. I think it takes some serious cajones in this day and age to make a high-budget, AAA title where the player can invest a whole lot of time into a game and, in doing so, fail to meet their objectives. There seems to be a prevailing mindset that a player should be able to experience all of the content in any game on a single play, which is perfectly understandable. I value my time, hate to feel it's being wasted and could be very frustrated indeed by having to replay a significant portion of a game due to being inefficient. At the same time, freeing me to do as I wish in terms of level grinding, exploration and other forms of progression without any consequences takes all of the urgency out of what should be globally significant events filled with tension. It's always struck me as a little silly to be running around, collecting stuff when cataclysm looms just on the horizon. |

New version of Oculus Rift features positional tracking Posted: 07 Jan 2014 09:45 AM PST The latest model of the Oculus Rift is on display at CES this week. We'll be getting some hands-on time later this week, but in the mean time Wired shares the newest features of the device. The biggest thing is that the head-mounted display now features a new AMOLED screen. And more importantly, there's now low persistence to mitigate motion blur and smearing. The most addition is that the Rift is now capable of positional tracking, meaning your in-game character will now lean and move based on how you move your head. This is accomplished thanks to the new externally mounted camera. This camera tracks small LED lights on the Oculus Rift, allowing players to move without the need for a controller. We'll share our impressions of the newest version of the Oculus Rift when we go hands-on later this week. The First Look at the New Oculus VR Prototype [Wired] |
Live show: The 100 Game Challenge Posted: 07 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST [Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch Rick 'King Foom' Olson play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.] Over the past few weeks at Twitch.TV, fellow broadcaster BigRichie2004 and myself have been part of a friendly competition that we've entitled, The 100 Game Challenge. Basically, this is a challenge to complete a list of 100 games that we've both handpicked and agreed on throughout the year. All genres and systems are included, guaranteeing a huge variety of gaming awesomeness. Now, while Richie is currently a few games ahead of me, I have some free time this evening, and am looking to catch up, hopefully shrinking his lead by just a little bit. Games that I might be looking to finish, or at least start up tonight include Aladdin, Strider, Super Mario Bros., Shadowgate, and ActRaiser. I'm hoping to at least knock one or two of these off of the list this evening, and could use your support. So be sure to come by Mash Tactics and cheer me on, or, if you're so inclined, laugh at all of my fails. As of right now, we only have the first 25 games picked out with more being added soon. If you want to see the current list, and check up on what games have been completed by whom, click this link right here. Wish me luck! Razer wants to reinvent the gaming PC as we know it Posted: 07 Jan 2014 09:15 AM PST I'll give you a second to take in the image of Razer's new modular PC concept. Project Christine is a "revolutionary new concept design that will change the way users view PCs." Basically, the system will allow for anyone to build and customize your own PC. No prior technical knowledge is needed, and as upgrades come to the market users will be able to easily to swap parts out. This is all thanks to the modular design that allows users to install modules on-the-fly. The PCI-Express architecture automatically syncs components and the setup features up to quad-SLI graphics, multiple SSD and RAID storage components, I/O and more. Interesting concept, but a pretty closed system as only Razer would presumably be making all the modules. |
Tiny Brains hits the PS3, with PS4 Cross-Buy Posted: 07 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST Remember when I talked up Sony's Cross-Buy system recently? Of course you do! Well there's more good news on that front, as Tiny Brains is hitting the PS3 today with Cross-Buy functionality. What that means is if you've purchased the PS4 edition you'll get it for free on PS3, and likewise for the PS3 version. So if you buy it now and decide to upgrade your "Station" later, you can re-download it. It's not 100% backwards compatibility, but I'll take it over nothing. Oh, and the game is pretty good too, especially if you have four players going at it locally. |
PS4 software sales reach over 9.7 million since launch Posted: 07 Jan 2014 08:45 AM PST The PlayStation 4 has sold 4.2 million units since it was launched. To go along with that figure, Sony also announced that software sales have reached 9.7 million copies worldwide between retail and digital. Top sellers include Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed IV, Battlefield 4, and Killzone: Shadow Fall. PlayStation Plus memberships have increased by more than 90% since the PS4's launch as well. Twitch shared their streaming figures, but combined with Ustream there have been 1.7 million gameplay broadcasts, generating nearly 22 million in spectating sessions. |
Square tells us exactly what's happening with Hitman Posted: 07 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST Yesterday, there was a report that sort of confused Hitman fans everywhere. People thought projects were canceled, and the franchise was in jeopardy, but here's the real rub straight from Square Enix. Apparently, the initial concept for the AAA/non-mobile version of Hitman was supposed to go between Square Enix Montreal and IO Interactive -- think Call of Duty and Infinity Ward with Treyarch. That's not happening anymore, as Montreal will be focusing on the mobile side, and IO will work on the next Hitman project. This has been confirmed to be the case with Square Enix, who stated that the next AAA Hitman game is coming to PC and next-gen consoles. We'll get more info on both that project and the mobile games later this year. Well, that settles it! Square Enix Clarifies Next-Gen Hitman Status [IGN] |
Preview: Aban Hawkins & the 1001 Spikes Posted: 07 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST Aban Hawkins & the 1000 Spikes was a great concept. It launched way back in 2011 on the Xbox Live Indie store for a whole dollar, and remains one of the best games on the marketplace to this day. But the folks over at Nicalis knew that it was meant for something greater -- enter 1001 Spikes. This confusingly named follow-up is set to rock on the Wii U, 3DS, Vita, and PS4 sometime this year, and if what I've played of an updated version is any indication, it's worth the wait. |
Videogame Clubhouse: We're back and playing Valdis Story Posted: 07 Jan 2014 07:45 AM PST Ooo wee baby! I'm back and feelin' soooo good. To kick off our month we're playing Valdis Story: Abyssal City. Now, this is a game I had never heard of before our beloved Chris(t) Carter reviewed it. Now, I don't want to spoil the game but it's rad as hell. Oh, and everything is SUPER PRETTY! You should come check it out as we blast through the first 2 hours on Videogame Clubhouse! Full DayZ beta set to arrive sometime in 2014 Posted: 07 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST Right now DayZ is in its alpha stage, and though thousands of people all across the world are heartily enjoying it, many of you want to wait until the more stable beta phase. You may be waiting a while though, as the beta is set to arrive 'sooner than the end of 2014' according to a recent developer update The developers really seem to be hopeful though given the massive boost in sales, and they plan on adding better stability, hunting and cooking systems, customization options, an upgrade graphical engine, and mod support. This is a pretty massive project, so buckle yourself in for this long developmental ride. DayZ: Three Weeks On the Road [Day Z Dev] |
Microsoft says its Halo television show won't be filler Posted: 07 Jan 2014 07:15 AM PST Microsoft is working on a Halo series for television later this year that's being executive produced by Steven Spielberg. That sentence represents the majority of what we know about the project, but worry not -- Microsoft Game Studios corporate VP Phil Spencer says it'll be good. "I definitely don't think of it as filler," he told OXM. "Halo, you could argue, is the most important entertainment IP that Microsoft owns. I can't use the word filler anywhere near Halo, it just won't work. If we're going to do a television series with Halo, we're going to do it the right way, and we're going to do it because we think it really matters." We shall see. I enjoyed Forward Unto Dawn for what it was, but the words "Halo" and "filler" absolutely can be used in the same sentence, as evidenced by Spartan Assault. Halo is our "most important IP", says Microsoft - TV show won't be "filler" [OXM] |
If you like Mega Man and own an iOS device, get UsagiMan Posted: 07 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST I was browsing through the App Store on my weekly search, and came across a rather odd looking game. It appeared to be a Mega Man homage, even going so far as having the same 8-bit style and sprite movements. It's called UsagiMan (Rabbit Man, in English), and it happens to be a pretty awesome free game. Basically, instead of forcing you to use an unwieldly virtual d-pad to get around, you'll tap the screen to "hook" onto certain parts and fling yourself forward. You can tap on enemies to fire your arm cannon, and while they're stunned, you can go for a fling smash move for more damage. There are even kooky boss fights and some other homages like "Wily Gates" to pass through. Although it is ad-supported (and they get in the way sometimes), you'll be able to rocket your way through the game's relatively short amount of levels all the same, and pick up a few upgrades along the way. Apple's App Store brought in $10 billion in 2013 Posted: 07 Jan 2014 06:45 AM PST Apple has announced that customers spent over $10 billion on the App Store in2013. App downloads reached almost three billion in December, and that alone brought in $1 billion in sales making for the most successful month in the App Store history. Of course this includes everything on the App store, not just games. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if games made up the majority of the sales figure here. Candy Crush and Clash of Clans alone bring in millions daily. DAILY. |
Humble Indie Bundle X: To the Moon, Papo & Yo, Runner2 Posted: 07 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST This particular Humble Indie Bundle marks the tenth main offering since the site's inception, but with all of the spinoffs over the past several years, it feels like there's been four times that amount. Not that I'm complaining! For the special occasion, we're getting a collection of excellent titles for Windows, Mac, and Linux. To the Moon, Joe Danger 2: The Movie, Papo & Yo, and Runner2 are being sold under the name-your-own-price scheme, while Reus and Surgeon Simulator 2013 are restricted to customers who pay above the average purchase price (less than $7). All of the featured titles' soundtracks are also included in the bundle and, yes, there will be even more games added down the line. If you were among the first thousand to pay $10 for the bundle, you also got a copy of Starbound. Son of a... |
Elder Scrolls Online will let you become Emperor Posted: 07 Jan 2014 06:15 AM PST More news on The Elder Scrolls Online has arrived, and this time, it's regarding the top dog position in the game's world -- the Emperor. ESO director Paul Sage spoke with OXM a bit about the role, and how players will be able to become the Emperor -- spoiler -- you do it by playing PVP a lot. Apparently doing basically anything in PVP will grant you Alliance Points, which will allow you to keep control of territories and gain influence. Whoever has the most points is the Emperor. It sounds like it could be lame, but if you achieve this status, you gain a full skillset for the lifetime of your account. Whoa! That actually sounds pretty cool. I doubt very many people will achieve it, but it's nice to know that the skills are permanent. What you'll get for becoming Emperor in The Elder Scrolls Online [OXM] |

China temporarily lifts ban on game console sales Posted: 07 Jan 2014 05:45 AM PST Reuters is reporting that China has temporarily lifted the ban on sale of foreign game consoles. The 14 year ban now allows "foreign-invested enterprises" to make consoles within Shanghai's free trade zone and sell them in China, so long as the government has approved it that is. In September we reported that China was looking to lift the longtime ban, and now they've finally moved forward. Now the question is will the likes of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo enter the Chinese market? Well in the case of Microsoft at least, the company made a joint venture with Chinese Internet TV company BesTV New Media to develop games and related services. SOE considering one subscription for all PC games Posted: 07 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST Writing to PlanetSide 2 players about future plans for subscriptions, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley teased the possibility of one sub that would span all of the company's games on PC. "We are considering (and are likely going to move forward with) a plan that means if you subscribe to one of our games you are a subscriber to all our games (this applies to PC titles only btw).. all for the current $14.99 a month," he wrote. "The goal would be to let you pick an item in each game you play. Some of you might say 'well who cares..I only play PlanetSide 2. How is that a benefit to me?' My answer is simple -- we've got a great lineup of games, some of which aren't announced yet that cater to a lot of players. We have [EverQuest Next] and [EverQuest Next Landmark] coming along with other..... games... that PS2 players might just like." For me, this all still falls under the same old problem of not having enough time to play one online game, much less multiple online games, without feeling as if I'm wasting money. There's a sense of urgency I can't keep up with -- at least not long term. That said, I think for a certain type of player this subscription offering would hold a lot of value. Just not me, sadly. Don't Starve is hitting the PS4 today, free on PS Plus Posted: 07 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST Last year, Don't Starve hit the PC and took the community by storm. Although the game looks incredibly unique, there's an insane layer of depth there due to its genius design. Today, you can pick the game up on the PlayStation 4, and even better -- for free if you're a PS+ subscriber. There are no real differences in this version outside of native DualShock 4 support, but you'll automatically get all 10 updates the PC crowd has slowly accrued over the course of 2013, trophy support, and an Adventure Mode unlocked right away. If you haven't played Don't Starve yet, this is the perfect time to try it out. It really took me by surprise, and as a fan of multiple genres (including simulations), it's crazy how so many gameplay styles are mashed together harmoniously. |
Ubi celebrates ten years of Far Cry with PS3 compilation Posted: 07 Jan 2014 04:45 AM PST Say you're saddled with the unfortunately specific desire to play a series of videogames on one disc where you catch Malaria, watch your brother get killed, and run through a neon-swathed post-nuclear warscape collecting VHS tapes. That's a ridiculous set of restrictions, and it sounds nigh impossible, right? Not for long. Ubisoft's releasing the Far Cry Compilation for PS3 on February 11, 2014. This pack includes Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3, and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Far Cry 2 will be a digital remaster of the game and feature its full singleplayer, multiplayer, and all patches. Far Cry 3 will include the main campaign, multiplayer, and co-op modes. This compilation set will retail for $39.99. Curiously, Ubisoft only named the one platform, so it looks to be exclusive to the PS3. Still, it's a collection of some seriously fun games. |
Posted: 07 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST I just had my first hands on with the newly announced PlayStation Now streaming service here at CES 2014, and I'm here to tell you that it seems to work beautifully. |
Sony's streaming game service is PlayStation Now Posted: 07 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST Revealed by Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House at CES 2014, the company's Gaikai-powered cloud gaming service is called PlayStation Now, and it's coming sooner than anticipated -- this summer in the United States. Through this service, PS1, PS2, and PS3 games will be playable over the internet on PS3, PS4, PS Vita, and also on devices like tablets, smartphones, and televisions. Even non-PlayStation devices will eventually support PS Now. The service will allow users to rent on a per-game basis, or subscribe with a currently undisclosed plan. The beta program for PS Now is launching at the end of this month in the US. Pending the finer details and the actual experience, I'm eager to try this out. Adoption! 20 percent of recent Twitch streams are on PS4 Posted: 07 Jan 2014 04:30 AM PST Apparently people are really taking to this whole "stream gameplay from your PlayStation 4" concept. Twitch announced today that between December 23, 2013 and January 3, 2014, 20% of its broadcasters were PS4 owners. One-fifth ain't bad for a console that isn't even two months old. Matthew DiPietro, Twitch's VP of Marketing, commented on the statistic by remarking "Ever since we began working with the major console platform companies, we were confident the integration of live broadcasting to Twitch would be a game changer. We envision a day when broadcasting your gameplay is a ubiquitous piece of the gaming experience. We're well on our way." Yes, it does seem that we are well on our way. The percentage of streams that come from consoles is only going to go up, too. You know, once it actually kicks in on Xbox One. |
Sony sold 4.2 million PS4s as of December 28 Posted: 07 Jan 2014 04:15 AM PST And here we are. For those who wanted something to compare the Xbox One's three million sales in 2013 against, Sony has come out with the PlayStation 4 figures for last year. Announced by Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House at CES 2014, the company sold 4.2 million PS4s from November 15 to December 28. Granted, the Xbox One did launch a week later than the PS4, and it'll be far more interesting to see how these numbers pan out years from now, but there you go. |
Onimusha Soul coming to the PS3 in Japan Posted: 07 Jan 2014 04:00 AM PST Hey, remember when Capcom announced a brand new Onimusha game called "Soul" and it ended up being a browser-based RPG? Yeah, that sucked. Well apparently Famitsu has revealed that the game is coming to the PlayStation 3 this spring -- but only in Japan. It feels like just yesterday when Onimusha was one of the hottest IPs in gaming. Remember when a $70 million budget movie was in the works? Or when Samonosuke and his crew crossed over and did battle with Mega Man.EXE and Zero in a Smash Bros. type fighting game? Onimusha Soul coming to PlayStation 3 [Gematsu] |
Alien: Isolation captures the mood of Ridley Scott's film Posted: 07 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST Have you ever been hunted? I haven't (in a videogame or, thankfully, real life). Some games make veiled attempts to simulate the sense, but as long as you learn and know the correct order of operations, they usually don't take much to best. Alien: Isolation made me feel as if I was being hunted for the first time ever. It competently thrusts you into the role of the prey, and as a result, it is completely f*cking terrifying. Before my 40 minute hands-on demo with Isolation, key developers from Creative Assembly gave a very short briefing on the studio's intentions with the game. First and foremost, it wanted to get back to the roots of survival horror by making a game based on the original survivor horror movie, Ridley Scott's Alien. In the developers' eyes, the best way to do this was to "re-Alien the Alien." What they meant by this is that they wanted players to always have the Xenomorph on their minds, regardless of the situation. A "low frequency, high impact" approach to brushes with the Alien was their aim. They cited Hannibal and Jaws -- two fixtures of horror movie culture -- as examples of incredibly effective characters despite having very little screen time. However, perhaps their most effective strategy to re-Aliening the Alien is including only one Xenomorph in Isolation. |
Creators of Left 4 Dead announce space themed 'Evolve' Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:43 AM PST Yesterday, Game Informer was teasing a big reveal by way of their February cover, and now, we know that it's Turtle Rock Studios' next project -- Evolve. Coming from the team who brought you Left 4 Dead, Evolve is being published by 2K Games, and is set to drop on PC, Xbox One, and the PS4 this fall. It's apparently a four player sci-fi shooter where four "alien hunters" battle a player controlled alien that grows in strength as the match goes on. Unlike Left 4 Dead, each hunter will have its own unique set of skills, and the game is planned to support a massive amount of replay factor. More and more current-gen exclusives are starting to roll out, and I can't wait to see how Evolve's multiplayer mode pans out. It sounds interesting, and if the monster can really grow to Kaiju size like the cover implies, it could be really interesting. February Cover Revealed – Evolve [Game Informer] |
Indie puzzle platformer Vessel not coming to Xbox 360 Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:30 AM PST In a bit of sour news for fans of puzzle platformers, it appears that Namco Bandai, who was handling the Xbox Live Arcade release of 2012's PC title Vessel, has stopped working on the port. In an email with XBLA Fans, John Krajewski of developer Strange Loop Games said, “Our publisher owns the rights to the XBLA version, and to our knowledge they’ve indeed stopped work on it. [The] PS3 [version] will be coming out soon, though, but we’re planning to announce that later this month. Sad news I know. It’s possible there will be an Xbox One version someday, though.” It is a bit of a shame that the Xbox 360 version might not see the light of day, but hopefully too many people aren't excluded from the opportunity to play Vessel. Certainly, the hypothetical Xbox One release would help the title in that regard. Heck, why not shoot for PS4 and Wii U as well? Alien: Isolation is nothing like Colonial Marines Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:01 AM PST There we were. The same notion on everyone’s mind, whether they liked it or not. Members of the press conflicted in their reluctant eagerness to address, key developers dreading the topic altogether. It clouded the air, enough to make everyone slightly uncomfortable with its inevitability. It was the Xenomorph-impregnated elephant in the room. “How did the reaction to Aliens: Colonial Marines affect your work on Alien: Isolation?” I’ll be the first to admit – the question is wholly unfair. Creative Assembly has been working on Isolation for more than three years now. It had a very distinct vision for its game long before anyone knew how Colonial Marines would turn out. Still, it needed to be asked. Fair or not, Isolation will be directly compared to Colonial Marines by both critics and fans alike. |
Alien: Isolation is the new game in the Alien franchise Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST After months of rampant Internet speculation, Sega has finally revealed that Alien: Isolation is the new title in the Alien(s) franchise, and that it's being developed by Creative Assembly, the studio behind the Total War series. True to its non-plural namesake, Isolation will be a survival horror game in the same vein as Ridley Scott's 1979 masterpiece. Alien: Isolation tells the story of Amanda Ripley, the daughter of the movie series' protagonist, Ellen Ripley. Amanda has been plagued since childhood by the mysterious disappearance of her mother after the loss of the Nostromo. Amanda, now a Weyland-Yutani employee herself, is tipped off that a space station has recovered the audio log detailing the events of the Nostromo. She journeys with a team to the space station, only to find that a Xenomorph has gotten there first and is wreaking havoc. |
Listen to some cut retro tracks from Mega Man X Posted: 07 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST The Rockman X Sound Box collection dropped last year, and apparently it contained four never before released tracks from Mega Man X. The folks over at Rockman Corner have those tracks soundly on YouTube for you to enjoy. The first track is an unused stage theme and is completely original. The next three are slightly re-tooled tracks that sound almost the same as the originals (Chill Penguin, Maverick Encounter, and Sigma Stage 3), but hardcore fans will be able to pick up on the slight remixes. I wouldn't go out of my way to pick up the set for these songs, but it's nice to be able to hear them. Mega Man X1 Music That Didn't Make The Cut [Rockman Corner] |
Tamsoft announces Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson Posted: 07 Jan 2014 12:33 AM PST Even though it may be lacking in some areas, people seem to be enjoying Senran Kagura Burst -- at least, enough for developer Tamsoft to announce a sequel. Famitsu has confirmed that the game will be called Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson, and will also hit the 3DS. Not much is known at this point other than that it'll still follow the same brawl style gameplay as the original, it'll have boss fights, and two male characters will be added. Look for it on August 7th, 2014 in Japan. As for a localization, that'll depend on how well the first one did. Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson Announced For Nintendo 3DS [Siliconera] |
Pokemon X & Y's composer leaves Game Freak Posted: 07 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST Kageyama Shota is one talented man, having composed the soundtrack for Pokemon X & Y (among a few others for Game Freak, as well as work on Luminous Arc and Smash Bros. Brawl). I found it to be one of the best OSTs of last year, but it seems as if his career at Game Freak is at an end. By way of a tweet, Kageyama noted that he's "graduating" from the company after six and a half years to start his own company, called Spica Musica. It seems as if he's free to return to Game Freak given the amicable departure. He's doing his own thing, and I respect that -- I wish him luck. 景山 将太 [Twitter via Anime News Network] |
Level-5 wants to 'surprise' fans in 2014 with new game Posted: 06 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST Fantasy Life took off in Japan, and as a result, has substantially raised Level-5's coffers beyond all of the other successful projects they had in 2013. Speaking to 4Gamer, a few key developers noted that the Fantasy Life franchise was doing very well, and that they have something new in mind for 2014. Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino noted that this year is important, stating, "In the midst of a rather sluggish consumer game industry at the moment, I believe that the industry needs a new game." He went on to say that Level-5 will "try our best to make a new title that’ll surprise all of you, so please look forward to that." Anyone want to take bets on Dark Cloud 3 -- and lose? I'm ready for a Fantasy Life localization whenever you are, guys. 今年は総勢 [4Gamer via Siliconera] |
Robot Pyros are coming to get you Posted: 06 Jan 2014 09:00 PM PST First there was Robot Heavy, now there is Robot Pyro. Not much else to share here other than we have an idea of what the Robot Pyro from Team Fortress 2 will look like in color. I certainly think they look better than the robotic Heavy, that's for sure. But I still wouldn't drop a dime on these. Remember, the Robot Heavy were going for just over $200. I'm sure these will cost just as much. 3A Toys' next Team Fortress 2 robot is the Pyro [Tomopop] |
A gallery of the new Steam Machines Posted: 06 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST Valve unveiled 14 Steam Machines at their CES press conference this past evening. After Gabe Newell gave us the rundown, we had a chance to get up close with some of the new models. Here is a gallery of the new machines we saw last night. You'll see that they come in all shapes in sizes, with prices that range from $499 to $6,000. Aside from a couple of the small cube-ish ones, all of them have striking designs. I think all of them look better than Valve's test box. Which one do you like best? I think the Alienware one is a looker, but I'm also drawn to Scan's sleek metal box. |
The Clayface toy just wants to be your friend Posted: 06 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST The latest figure from the Batman: Arkham City lineup is Clayface. The figure comes in at 13-inches tall, making it the largest action figure in the DC Collectibles line. Bigger than Solomon Grundy, Killer Croc, and Titan Joker. Speaking of Joker, the figure includes an interchangeable Joker head. Creepy. Plus an alternate blade forearm. It only has 13-points of articulation, and will cost you $90 when it's released later this year. Of all the bad guys Batman has to deal with, you'd think Clayface would be the hardest foe. Come on Clayface, just wrap yourself around Batman's body then insert your entire being inside of his body until he explodes! I'd be the best villain. HipShotDot puts a red dot right on your screen Posted: 06 Jan 2014 06:49 PM PST I thought something was wrong with a television I came across at CES tonight. There was a big red dot right in the center of a screen, like a really bright bad pixel. At second glance I noticed that a game of Call of Duty Ghosts had the dot lining up exactly with the game's reticle. What are the chances of that? If you're using Airdrop Gaming's HipShotDot, the chances are pretty good. This is a powered red dot sight attachment to be used with first-person shooters to improve performance and aim. Shoot from the hip if you'd like! Despite what happens on the screen, this red dot won't be going anywhere. It's bright, so it's clearly visible at all times. It's brilliant -- literally. This dot is USB powered, so it can plug into your console easily. A microthin lead is barely visible against the screen, and the clear suction cup around the dot LED is also almost invisible. A second attachment sits below the center one to have the lead running straight down. When watching gameplay, it was barely noticeable. Airdrop Gaming's site has the HipShotDot available now for $29.99. |
