Mabinogi II: Arena Development Cancelled

MB2 Arena

News from across the Pacific – NSquare (the joint team between Nexon and NCSoft) has ended development of Mabinogi II: Arena, apparently due to concerns with the title’s feasibility and player interest.

NSquare will still be working on the recently announced MapleStory 2, and revisiting a Mabinogi sequel sometime in the future, according to MMOCulture.

Sony Online Discusses Subscription Model Changes

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 04:46 PM PST

SOE

Over the New Year’s holiday, Sony Online Entertainment announced some changes for its game subscribers: starting on February 3, subscribers will receive one free item (of their choice) valued at 2000 Station Cash or less per month, instead of the regular monthly 500 SC stipend.

This stirred up more than a little confusion and discussion with SOE regulars, so today, John Smedley hit Reddit with an impactful statement that not only explained the rationale of this change, but also hinted at the possibility of a network-wide subscription model.

Smedley explained that the goal of the change allows players to pick up larger items on the marketplace, reduce SC accruals, and reduce the disparity between PC titles and console titles (the latter of which can’t use Station Cash).

Smedley went on to sum up the cross-title subscription plan thusly:

We are considering (and are likely going to move forward with) a plan that means if you subscribe to one of our games you are a subscriber to all our games (this applies to PC titles only btw).. all for the current $14.99 a month. That’s a benefit most companies simply can’t offer because they don’t have our portfolio of games. The goal would be to let you pick an item in each game you play. Some of you might say “well who cares..I only play Planetside 2. How is that a benefit to me?” My answer is simple – we’ve got a great lineup of games, some of which aren’t announced yet that cater to a lot of players. We have EQN and EQNL coming along with other….. games… that PS2 players might just like icon smile

World Tour Fishing Review

By Remko Molenaar (Proxzor) OnRPG Journalist

WorldTourFishing2

In the last couple of years I have seen more and more games being developed for this hobby that is even considered a sport among some people. I personally am not that big of a fan of fishing, even though a part of my family grew up using a fishing rod as their way of life; maybe that job aspect of it just made it not that appealing for me. However World Tour Fishing recently went into the closed beta testing phase selling fishing as a friend and not just food, so I took up the assignment to see what is so appealing about this 'sport.'

Fishing is oversimplified often by the uninitiated. You do not simply throw in your bait and use a net to get the fish as they swim by. Instead we use a large rod, with a fishing line and a hook and we wait until one of these dumb creatures sees the shiny food or lure in the water and take a bite from it. Patience is a virtue, especially with fishing because it can take hours before a fish feels like taking a bite from your bait. Fortunately the fish in World Tour Fishing are a bit hungrier, but patience and precision timing still play a part in the fight. Before you head onto sea with your fishing boat and your expensive fishing rod, you start small, with a rod made from bamboo. In the tutorial you will be introduced as to why fishing can be seen as a relaxing sport, something you do on the weekend when you have absolutely nothing better to do, and you feel like sitting next to a lake with no one and nothing around you.

I have actually fished a lot in my life when I was still young, so thanks to my forceful inclusion in family affairs I know enough to offer insight into this game's realism. And I was pleased to say that as soon as the tutorial began, I was seeing plenty of similarities present. You obviously need all the right tools to start fishing; if you do not have all the necessary items you will obviously have a harder time catching fish. Patience comes into play to compensate for this, or so I feared as I placed my virtual hands on my first bamboo rod. Since I have as much patience as a 10 year old kid walking through the gates of Disneyland at dawn, I figured this was going to be a rough introduction to the game.

WorldTourFishing1

And so the waiting began. Thankfully World Tour Fishing isn't an ugly game, nor is it over the top anime themed like most of the fishing games currently on the market. WTF takes fishing seriously in an attempt to capture real fishers that don't have the time of day to drive 8 hours every weekend to get to their favorite watering hole.

WorldTourFishing5

When you have swung your mouse around to start fishing, the waiting game starts. After a few teases and swirls in the water as fish contemplate your bait through some sort of RNG system, the dance of death begins. When the fish does become interested you will have a couple of ways to reel in the fish. The game made it a little arcady to make for a challenging and interesting experience that more core gamers will enjoy, but made sure not to lose out on realism in the process. When you have successfully 'engaged' the fish in mortal combat, the reeling stage begins. Your fishing rod does damage over time to the fish, and successful jerks and reels further damage the fish's stamina. Just don't get overzealous as doing so will also build tension on the line, eventually resulting in the line snapping if you don't manage your meter properly.

Another form of realism comes in the way you use your fishing rod. If your fish moves to the left, you can try to counter the fish by swinging your rod in the opposite direction, dealing additional damage if timed correctly. When you have finally managed to bring in the fish, you will be able to keep it and release it. By keeping it you can throw it in your fishing tank or sell it for some money.

WorldTourFishing3

The actual fish your dad struggled with when telling the wide armed tale of the one that got away.

At first you will only catch fish that are a couple of centimeters long, not really worth keeping honestly, but a good source of revenue nonetheless for upgrading your tools. Keep at it long enough and eventually you can purchase your own boat and cruise around the lake in style. That's where this game begins to shine.

WorldTourFishing4

Conclusion: Good

As you can see, fishing is not the greatest hobby I have ever done in my life, and even though I have done it a lot in my life, I still can't enjoy it as much as my family. That said, this game nails the parts of fishing that enthusiasts do enjoy a good deal better than anything else on the market. Meanwhile the UI and mini-game type controls are just enough to keep the gamer in us on the hook. Patience is a virtue, with literally everything that you do while fishing, but thankfully the game itself offers enough quality graphics and precise controls to be taken seriously as a modern MMO. WTF doesn't take long to learn and offers a relaxing and fun title that will be popular among collector's and time wasters alike.

RF Online Mobile Review

By Vincent Haoson (Ojogo)

IMG 2824

I would have to admit that RF Online was one of my go to games ever since it came out in our side of the world. I loved that RF Online introduced the concept of being able to pilot a truly robot avatar in the form of the Acretians. Seeing the game die just this year in our area felt like a punch in the gut, even if the game has started to become dated compared side by side with new games that have been coming out.

IMG 2825

With that said, I pretty much expected that RF Online Mobile would make me reminisce the good old days, back when Chip warring was my thing and taking down Mechs and summons left and right were satisfying sights to behold.
Sadly, upon playing RF Online Mobile, all I got was peels of disappointment and it felt that I was extremely short-changed.

Gameplay

One of the biggest areas RF Online Mobile took liberty with is the gameplay. The MMORPG aspect was torn to shreds and was replaced with a mobile game-sque system much akin to text based, mobile RPGs.

IMG 2827

Unlike its PC version, RF Online Mobile's battle system is an "energy draining" enterprise where you get to "kill" NPCs 1v1. You can still earn experience points and level up much like any other RPG. So think of RF Online as Mafia Wars (remember when that game was popular?) skinned as RF Online.

You still have the option of choosing between the three races but the job classes are gone.

IMG 2830

Your character still has skills that he/she can use. However since the game isn't a 3D MMORPG anymore, you are only allowed to equip learned and upgraded skills pre-battle and hope to whatever deity you put your faith on that it'll connect during battle phase.
You can also still equip weapons and armaments on your character and even upgrade them too.

Features

CH Games Co. retained a lot of gameplay features that were exclusively for RF Online. However the problem is that a lot of them were stripped down to fit the game's "different look" into the world of Novus.

IMG 2831

Player progression is done through the single player missions; on the other hand, multiplayer features are relegated into PvP, mine wars and just plain wars. The game tries its best to keep your attention by providing various avenues to make you come back into the game.

Chip wars has been changed to mine wars and is turned into a numbers/population game instead of what it was before, an all-out battle between the three races. However, instead of actually duking it out like in the MMORPG version, you are relegated in scrounging up players to help out in the battles. While it's normally a given that most often than not, events like this are reliant on the player population, at least in the MMORPG version, you still have given that sliver of hope that you can win said wars, but in RF Online mobile, since it's basically a numbers/stats game, you end up just giving up on even participating.

IMG 2832

PvP on the other hand, while is still present, is a boring foray into playing against other players. Wars meanwhile are no different, thus dashing more hopes for the game.

Verdict: Poor

Before I started playing RF Online Mobile, I expected it to be similar to Sega's Demon Tribes. I hoped that the mobile version retained some semblance of ANY MMORPG elements since there have been various MMORPG games out on the mobile.

But no, I was welcomed by a stripped down RF Online experience. It's insulting to my memory of RF Online, and in this day and age where you can bring RF Online, or at least some of it into the mobile platform. But nooooo, what I had to endure was a flash based game that's all too similar to numerous half-baked mobile games out there.

IMG 2834

Seeing RF Online stripped down to this ugly game is painful and sad. RF Online Mobile kill the whole idea of playing RF Online in the mobile platform. If they just took the MMORPG medium and streamlined it to the mobile platform I won't be this nasty with the game, but, since this is what it is now, I just can't stop myself from hating the game.

Would I recommend this game? Well if you haven't been reading at least the first three paragraphs of the conclusion, then I'd say no, not in a million years would I recommend RF Online Mobile to anyone (well except for my enemies since I'd like them to waste their time). Any person who has played and loved RF Online should not even start playing this game. Don't even touch it, even with a ten foot pole. It's that bad. I'd rather suggest you to find yourself a nice, stable private server if you don't want to join the international servers (and that RF Online in your country is officially dead like ours).

There would've been better ways on how the game was treated, but it clearly wasn't done here. So move along now and don't look back at this game ever again.

Deadbreed: Hardcore MOBA hits Steam Greenlight

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 09:45 AM PST

A group of Swedish game developer veterans (formerly known for their development of “Just Cause” from Avalanche Studios) has come together to make Deadbreed — a darker hardcore MOBA with unprecedented hero customizability and RPG gameplay features. This high-end next generation MOBA is the first release from the Swedish stealth startup. "I wanted to play a MOBA where I could totally customize how my hero looked and, more importantly played, but I couldn't find one," explains Stefan Ljungqvist, developer at the Stockholm based studio.

While giving the player complete freedom over character customization, which includes full control over character appearances, Sentinel battles where players can choose their endgame boss fight and extra features like PvP quests, Deadbreed sets itself from pack by offering a ton of unique features never before attempted in the genre.

"Talking to friends, I realized I wasn't the only one wanting this, so we decided to make it. Also, this was our chance to make a darker themed MOBA for hardcore gamers like ourselves and bring in some additional RPG gameplay features." The response from Deadbreed's weeks old Steam Greenlight campaign and community feedback indicate that many gamers seem to agree. After a decade of making triple A action console games, it feels good to return to your roots," continues Stefan, who also has a background as a pen-and-paper RPG and miniatures games designer. "It feels great to make monsters again!"

Deadbreed is currently accepting signups for its upcoming closed Beta and is available for PC. For more information, visit: http://www.deadbreed.com/

Digimon Masters Rings in the New Year

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 12:32 PM PST

Joymax is welcoming everyone to the new year with a new addition to their worldwide MMO sensation, Digimon Masters. Alongside a huge cash shop sale, now is the perfect time to join, or return to, the biggest Digimon MMO in the world.

Baihumon Champion

Introducing the holy beast, Baihumon! As one of the four Holy Beasts that protect the Digital World, this Ultimate digivolution guards the Western direction, while its siblings guard North, East, and South. Despite being the youngest of the four Beasts, it is by far the most powerful; its great power and immortality is attributed to the power of the DigiCore. Generally taking a stance of neutrality, it is slow to make friends. Its special move, the "Kongo Wave," emits from its mouth and is strong enough to cause paralysis and forces metal to rust and often leads to death!

It's the last few days of the Christmas Reinforced Mercenary DigiEgg! Tamers have until January 14th to grab these coveted eggs, which have a chance to hatch into Seedmon, DemiDevimon, Pawnchessmon White, Impmon, Ryuudamon, Dracomon Blue and Green, Veemon, Patamon, or Kudamon, all guaranteed to be level 4 or 5! Players can continue to turn in their New Year's coins for this prize, or purchase them from the Digimon Masters cash shop.

Fans can find everything and anything about Digimon Masters Online on its official Facebook page, which has more than 372,000 likes from all over the world.

Dark Frenzy: Establish Your Name in Inferno Legend

Posted: 02 Jan 2014 10:47 AM PST

Inferno Legend DF 1

Gamebox’s downloadable MMORPG Inferno Legend has recently released a major update with the brand new feature of “Dark Tournament”. Dark Tournament is a new PvP feature that enables players to see their true strength comparing with others.

Free Mode & Class Mode
There are two different modes in Dark Tournament. In Class Mode, players will be divided in groups according to their class. And players of each class will be paired and fight in rounds. At the end of the tournament, each class will have an independent rank so that players can see how good they are among players of their class.

Inferno Legend DF 2

Free Mode is even more competitive. It is like Class Mode but with players of all classes on the same platform. And at the end of it, there will be only one rank so that players can see their stance in their server.

Prayers & Outbursts
Like any competition, the preparation phase in Dark Competition is vital. Without knowing who their next opponent will be, players still have some options prepare for the upcoming battle. No matter who the opponent is, improving the strength of yourself will always bring you a better chance of winning. Besides the equipment enhancing and skill upgrading players are already familiar with, Dark Tournament provides extra options of prayer and outburst that immediately enhance the rating of players’ team.

Inferno Legend DF 3

To use Prayer, players need to spend a certain amount of Gold. Prayers will give your team a rating boost throughout the entire tournament. And Outburst is free with a 30% rating boost for your team for the upcoming round. However, Outburst can only be used 3 times in a tournament, so it will be a very strategic decision in which rounds Outburst should be used for players to make depending on how far they expect their team would go into the tournament.

With this new Dark Tournament feature and the existing Arena function, Inferno Legend PvP system is pretty complete. Players now have multiple choices to challenge each other and see their standings in this game. This will certainly bring a strong sense of achievement.

Captain's Log: Can Star Trek Online craft a future for crafting?

STO Memory Alpha
This week I'll be dedicating a whole column on the current state of crafting in Star Trek Online. If there's one thing upon which most Star Trek Online players agree, it's that the crafting system in STO needs a complete overhaul. But there's a very real question as to whether or not an overhaul is even feasible.

When it comes to business, it's usually best to save those parts of a business plan that are working so as not to waste the investments already made. In relation to MMOs, the same considerations should (and in the case of publicly-held companies, is legally required to) be granted to all aspects of its product. Since most MMOs have multiple features typical to all games (PvP, crafting, housing, PvE, etc.) each one of these facets' productivity matters.

If a single feature assists in keeping players in-game, then there's more potential for revenue generation to occur. If a feature not only keeps a player in-game but is, in and of itself, a point of revenue generation, then it's all the better for the company and therefore its shareholders.

Elder Scrolls Online player emperors will gain a permanent skill set

Are you wondering what you'll get when you become emperor of Elder Scrolls Online -- other than a fancy suit of armor, that is?

The Official Xbox Magazine discovered that player emperors will gain a skill line that they will retain for the rest of their time in the game. The skills will persist even if the position of emperor is lost, although the skills will be toned down somewhat in that case.

Becoming emperor won't be easy, however (as if you thought otherwise). To do so, a player will need to do a heckuva lot of PvP to gain alliance points. If a player's alliance conquers all of the keeps around the Imperial City and that player has the most alliance points when it happens, he or she will be crowned emperor.

The Repopulation surpasses 2nd KickStarter goal, moves on to stretch

While some were skeptical about a second Kickstarter campaign for The Repopulation, fans showed their support by helping the upcoming sandbox reach its goal over the weekend. Now, with 20 days still to go the focus shifts to the stretch goals, which include various mounts (the Rocharus at $60K is seen above), PvP arenas, a moddable UI, traveling shops, and more. On top of the successful campaign, The Repopulation is also receiving overwhelmingly positive support on its Steam Greenlight campagn; it's currently in fifth place.

Want to learn even more about the game? If the recent three-hour Q&A livestream wasn't enough to satisfy you, Above & Beyond Technologies' creator J.C. Smith chatted with The Noobist about ongoing world story, the horticulture system, animal breeding, trade, and much more.

The Stream Team: Snow shark edition, January 6 - 12, 2014

What do you do when Mother Nature decides to dump enough snow on you to recreate a life-size replica of The Wall? Most of us would hunker down at our desks and dive into the sunnier realms of our favorite virtual worlds. We're gamers; that's what we do. But I've since learned that there are those who actually go out in that powdery white stuff and do something constructive -- and I don't just mean shoveling (which is pretty much how I've spent this whole new year so far).

Thanks to just such people, I have now experienced the Snow Shark. And I want one! If you haven't seen one yourself, you simply haven't lived yet. Now I am inspired to go do something with the foot of snow right outside my door, but what would I make? I may not be able to top a Snow Shark (who can?!), but I'm sure to get plenty of inspiration watching this week's Stream Team escapades on Massively TV.

The Daily Grind: What's your favorite holiday event?

Lord of the Rings Online's Winter-home theatre
I don't typically do MMO holiday events, but last weekend I was roped into checking out Lord of the Rings Online's Winter-home shindig. Most of it was standard grind-for-reward-tokens stuff, but there was one bit set inside a theatre that was pretty memorable.

Members from the audience were plucked at random to participate in a dev-scripted stage play, and depending upon how well you engaged the NPC audience with various character emotes, you could expect to be showered with either flower petals or rotten fruit courtesy of the player characters in the crowd.

What about you, Massively readers? Do you do MMO holiday events, and if so, what's your favorite?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

MMO Week in Review: Altering the deal

        EQ Next Landmark
At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post.

To ring in the New Year the way only it can, Sony Online Entertainment shocked fans of its current and upcoming MMOs (and made some of us question our most-anticipated and best-studio picks) by rescinding longstanding subscriber benefits for several of its titles, swapping industry-standard cash-shop allowances for a single time-limited monthly gift item and reducing the attractiveness of subscriptions on the whole. Massively's EverQuest franchise columnist remains unimpressed by the studio's claims that the nerfs represent "added value" for players, especially considering that EverQuest Next Landmark is likely to enter pre-order alpha by the end of the month.

Read on for a look at the rest of this week's top MMO stories.

EVE Evolved: Designing EVE Onland, part 2

          EVE Evolved title image
When it comes to living sandbox MMOs, there really isn't a bigger name than EVE Online. Throughout its decade-long history, EVE has produced some huge gaming headlines, delivered record-breaking in-game thefts and heists, and played host to the complex political machinations of dozens of warring alliances. EVE's sandbox design has even made it remarkably resistant to changes in the market, with subscription numbers remaining relatively stable in the face of new releases and the free to play phenomenon. It comes as no surprise then that the sandbox genre is seeing a triple-A revival, with games like Star Citizen, EverQuest Next Landmark, and Camelot Unchained on the way.

With the sandbox genre due to explode back onto the fantasy scene, I've been left wondering how much of the core gameplay that makes EVE tick could be easily adapted for an avatar-based game on land. Even features such as EVE Online's trademark territorial warfare and player-run economy have roots in classic fantasy MMOs like Ultima Online, so they should be easy to convert to modern fantasy equivalents. Last week I started this game design thought experiment with a territorial warfare system and free-for-all PvP with harsh consequences for attackers, but there's a lot more to a good sandbox than smashing people's heads in.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I delve into the hypothetical world of EVE Onland again and tackle issues of realistic world scale, exploration, economics, and the evils of global banking.

            World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft player Doubleagent is going strong on his quest to level his Pandaran as a truly neutral character, recently hitting level 80 for his efforts.

When last we saw Doubleagent in August 2013, he had reached level 60 by engaging in herbalism and inscription as his sole source of XP. WoW Insider reports that he just recently crossed the level 80 barrier and hopes to reach level 81 within two weeks. Doubleagent started his quest to level a true neutral Pandaran back in September 2012.

You can check out the moment of level 80 glory in his video after the break!

WoW Clone - You Say That Like It

It's no secret that World of Warcraft inspires many people to great heights of passion, both because of their affection for or antipathy towards the game. In the nine years since WoW launched, every subsequent MMO has been compared to it in one way or another, usually by those who mean that comparison as an insult to the developers who made the game.
