At long last, Nidhogg is coming out January 13, 2014

The super intense and frenetic Nidhogg finally has a release date, set to come out on January 13, 2014 for Steam on Windows. We've been patiently waiting for Nidhogg ever since 2010, when designer Mark Essen was commissioned by the NYU Game Center to create a game for the No Quarter Exhibition.

Nidhogg is a territorial two-player dueling game, and one well placed blow will kill your opponents instantly. Those that have fond memories of Bushido Blade, or those that have been addicted to games like Towerfall and Samurai Gunn will want to get their hands all over this one.

Now all we need is an exact date on when Sportsfriends is arriving this month to complete the circle of insanely fun local multiplayer games.

Yup, The Zoo Race. A game in which you play as a variety of animals, in hats mind you, and race around a set of surreal race tracks, including segments where your furry friend of choice will ride a missile, get shot out of a cannon, avoid flaming barrels, and more. Supposedly as well, this game has some sort of religious undertone, but, um, watching Noah get down and disco with his animal companions hardly makes me want to praise a higher power. New race announced for FTL Advanced Edition

FTL: Faster than Light is gearing up for its "Advanced Edition" update, coming early this year, and some new information about the content said update will contain has now been released. The biggest news is the addition of a race of metallic scavengers, the Lanius, who not only have no need for oxygen but actively drain the breathable air from rooms they're in. I'm sure that won't be a problem in the middle of a firefight.

Other additions include a third starting ship design for every fleet type, which means a total of 12 new ships to play with. There are also new drones, including an anti-combat drone which targets other enemy drones. That's an escalation I can get behind.

Killing with traps in new Deception IV gameplay footage

Tecmo Koei has released three videos demonstrating the gameplay of Deception IV: Blood Ties, coming to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. In each, a different person is killed by a complex set of traps chained together, including bear traps, wall spikes, an iron maiden and so much more.

What appears to be new in this installment is an increase in the number of traps you can implement at one time. In prior games, players were limited to one trap each of floor, wall and ceiling types. Here we see five traps being used at once, with three of them assigned to the 'X' button and selections made with L & R. You know what this means? Mad combos, that's what it means.

I want this badly. The Deception series is one of my all-time favorites and stands apart as a very different kind of game to play. You're constantly on the defensive, always running, but when you manage to get a group of traps set and an enemy walks right into your nefarious plans, it is sublime. I wish Tecmo would tell me when this is releasing in North America, because I am so ready to give them money for it.

Bill from The Last of Us voted as GLAAD's most intriguing

As Dtoid's Game of the Year for 2013, The Last of Us is a title that hit all the right notes for players, and will likely go down as one of the most memorable games of the last generation. It was earnest, brutal, and uncompromising in its view of a world gone sideways. And now it seems that GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) has taken a liking to it as well.

During the organization's roundup of the most intriguing characters for 2013, featuring personalities from works of fiction such as Orange is the New Black, Blue is the Warmest Color, and Orphan Black, the character of Bill from The Last of Us also made an appearance on the list. It's pretty surprising to see a videogame character make the cut, and the writers at GLAAD definitely had a lot to say about him.

"One of the characters the player encounters over the course of the game is Bill, an unstable loner in the town of Lincoln with a talent for fixing things. Through dialogue and backstory, the player learns that Bill once had a partner named Frank who he loved, but the plague drove them apart and led Frank to a bitter end. Both helpful and contentious, Bill is as deeply flawed but wholly unique a gay character found in any storytelling medium this year."

It's not too often you see gay characters in games portrayed in a modest and non-stereotypical way. One of the greatest strengths The Last of Us had was its storytelling and characterization, and much of it was very subtle.

'Y2K' is a Killer7 EarthBound Hipster Hybrid Heaven

Ackk Studios, creators of the Game Boy-influenced, color-themed RPG Two Brothers has revealed a few screens of their next game, currently codenamed Project Y2K. Details on the game remain scant, but a little Twitter digging revealed a few incidental details, such as influences like David O'Reilly (Her, Adventure Time, Eat My Sharts), Takashi Marukami (Jellyfish Eyes, Superflat First Love), Killer7, EarthBound, and the "Hipster" stereotype. Seems like a dream come true, though I hope the game doesn't give hipsters too hard of a time. Out of all the fashion-obsessed groups in modern culture today, they seem to get the most flack, while sexy male models and the real housewives continue to get away relatively unscathed.

Right now the game is running on the PS4, though its likely coming to Wii U and PC as well. We've got Ackk Studios scheduled to appear on Sup Holmes on January 26th. Hopefully we can squeeze some information from them about this promising new game on that date.

Some Marvel games have vanished from Steam, PSN, XBL

Deadpool, a game that released on June 25, 2013, is no longer available for purchase on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, or Steam -- and it's not alone.

Other games presumably impacted by a licensing agreement with Marvel coming to a close include Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Spider-Man: Edge of Time, X-Men: The Official Game, X-Men Destiny, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Game Informer has confirmed this list with Activision.

I'm unaware of what development on Deadpool was like behind the scenes at High Moon Studios and can only wager a guess knowing Activision served as publisher, but it's obvious the property wasn't given the budget and time frame it deserved. And now it's gone. Such a waste. As for the other titles, I'm bummed I never downloaded X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The Year of Luigi 2013: A Retrospective

In case you've been living under a rock for the past year, Nintendo has been running a fun promotion throughout 2013: the Year of Luigi. The goal is simple -- to celebrate the part of the Mario duo that is often described as "The Lesser Brother," and to honor his contribution to Nintendo history.

The concept is largely supported by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, who constantly delivered Luigi-centric news throughout the year and had some fond things to say about him. To make things even more interesting, Iwata officially extended the Year of Luigi into 2014 on December 18th, 2013. Let us remember this, our first year of Luigi.

Steam sale: The Walking Dead S2, Rayman, Mortal Kombat

Happy new year!

I don't know about the rest of you, but despite last night's festivities, the first thing I did after waking up today was check out the new Steam deals. It's become a routine, for better or worse.

Daily deals:

  • You Need a Budget 4 ($14.99)
  • Just Cause 2 ($2.99)
  • Civilization V ($7.49)
  • The Walking Dead Season Two ($18.74)
  • Valdis Story: Abyssal City ($3.74)
  • Castle Story ($13.39)

  • Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition ($10.19)

I don't find this to be a very compelling group, but I do quite like the current set of flash sales: Legend of Grimrock ($2.99), Interstellar Marines ($5.09), Rayman Legends ($19.99), and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition ($7.49). Also, VVVVVV is down to $0.49 thanks to a community vote. Not owning the game at this point would just be odd. Sell some Steam trading cards, if you must. For those of you who have played it, how is Valdis Story? Looks neat!

Impressions: Starbound

Back in 2011, Re-Logic released Terraria, which gained massive popularity for its procedurally generated sandbox gameplay that had combat and objectives for those wanting more than just a place to go and dig.

It was a surprise hit for me, and I ended up spending hundreds of hours with it. Eventually, life happened and Terraria's creator Andrew "Redigit" Spinks announced that it would not be updated any more, but also that artist Finn "Tiy" Brice had moved on to form Chucklefish, whose first project would be what many consider to be a spiritual successor to Re-Logic's title, but set in space. Starbound was born.

Fans backed the project fervently, with its homegrown crowdfunding campaign topping a million dollars in under a month. Currently, they have sold over 180,000 pre-orders, taking in more than $3.7 million in support of the project. Starbound is an indie sensation, but while it does strive to be seen as its own entity, it will always be compared to its predecessor.

For the most part, comparisons between Terraria and Starbound are apt, and they provide a good starting point for discussion, but in the end Starbound is much more than just "Terraria in space."

Shenmue's Ryo Hazuki returns in All-Stars Racing mobile

Sega has been teasing the return of Ryo Hazuki recently -- a character previously absent from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. At this time I can confirm that he will indeed be returning to the franchise, but for right now, only in the iOS and Android versions of the game -- which launches tomorrow.

Ryo uses a classic Sega arcade cabinet as his ride, with references to Out Run, Space Harrier, and Hang-On, depending on what surface it's on. In order to unlock him, you have to complete a full streak of weekly challenges -- a mobile-centric feature that allows you to enter certain race types on a time limit.

Watch a lowly Servbot turn into Mega Man

Artist and animator ultimatemaverickx has created a new Mega Man related short film for us to enjoy. The catch? It doesn't actually star the Blue Bomber himself, but an adorable Servbot who happens to don the Mega Man ZX armor.

I would love to play a game like this. Take the best parts of the Tron Bonne game, and mix it with a 2D hand-drawn Mega Man style. Similar to how Prinny on PSP allowed for multiple "lives," each Servbot could be "replaced" upon death.

Capcom could be coming up with ideas like this. Or they could just let the franchise rot and let everyone else celebrate it for them.

To the Moon just got a new free mini-episode

While Kan Geo is still hard at work with his follow-up to To the Moon, A Bird Story, you can grab a free episode for the former right now. It's a small consolation for the delay of his new work, and it's basically a gaiden that references the original game.

If you haven't played To the Moon yet, consider it. It's a wonderful, heart-tugging little experience that's incredibly easy to digest -- especially over a holiday.

YES! New Arkham Origins DLC is likely Mr. Freeze related

When the Batman: Arkham Origins Facebook page teased an event happening at the Humanitarian Awards, many of our readers guessed that it was a reference to an episode of Batman: The Animated Series. Well it appears as if they're right, as the crew has just revealed a picture for a new story DLC coming in 2014, and it's completely frozen over.

Yep, although they haven't come out and said it, it's more likely than not that Mr. Freeze will be heading up this add-on. I don't have any real confidence in Warner Bros. Montreal in terms of producing DLC, but that doesn't stop me from rooting for one of my favorite Batman villains. I'm sure some people are tired of Mr. Freeze after Arkham City, but I can't get enough of him, personally -- and if done right (just rip off The Animated Series, guys), this DLC could have a pretty killer story.

We may see two new games in 2014 from Tekken director

Tekken is still chugging along, and director Katsuhiro Harada recently had a chat with 4Gamer to clarify where he stands on the series . Although he's mostly been working on F2P in 2012, he also noted that, everything upcoming may not be entirely Tekken related, stating,"there are a few titles that we’ve been quietly working on, and some we’ve been thinking about working on, so the year 2014 looks like it’ll be a tough one."

He also states, "From there, I’d like to announce at least two of those titles in 2014, and I feel that it’s something I must do." Based on the wording, it seems as if he's not talking about Tekken, but new works or possibly new IPs. Harada is making a 2014 resolution to do more work related activities, instead of making "surprise appearances" and doing a ton of pro-bono gigs, which he said he did a lot of in 2013.

It's always interesting to see creators and directors play tug of war with their life works. Whereas Kojima is constantly going back to Metal Gear Solid, others wrestle with the idea of going back and forth between new projects and their existing IPs.

While Phantom Pain is still a ways off, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is approaching quickly -- as in, it's dropping in March 2014. We already knew the latter was going to be just a taste of what's to come in Phantom Pain, but now we have a little more info from Kojima himself.

The Metal Gear director states, "Ground Zeroes has a relatively small field compared to the main game, which is hundreds of times larger." He also notes that time zones will not change in real time, and that Ground Zeroes will serve as a tutorial of sorts.

Hundreds of times larger eh? Zeroes is either really small, or Phantom Pain is really large. I can't wait to see what both have to offer.

A Respanw developer by the handle of scriptacus took to the Titanfall forums to give us a little new information on the game's sniping class.

"Sniping is in the game, but due to how the game plays it's a pretty different animal than you'll find in your run of the mill modern military shooter. Quick scoping and no-scoping are ineffective."

I imagine this has a lot to do with how much more fast-paced Titanfall plays compared to shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield. Locking down a target as they're double jumping with jetpacks and running up or alongside walls is going to be tricky looking through a long-range scope.

MAGFest is coming! Here's our panel info!

MAGFest is just TWO DAYS AWAY! We've been keeping you updated with announcements thus far, with news about the MAG Prom, DJ line-up, Mega Manathon, Main Stage line-up, and special guests. Now that the schedule has been released, we can tell you about our very own panel!

On Friday we'll be in Panel Room 2 at 2:30 pm, hosting our panel entitled "Community First: Maintaining the Community of a Growing Website." We'll have Forums Admin and Communitoid host Aaron Yost, Reviews Director Chris Carter, Contributor Kyle MacGregor, Contributor and Flixist Editor-in-Chief Matthew Razak, and myself hosting a low-key discussion about where we came from in the community and what members can do to be more involved. We'll certainly share some stories, and who knows if other staff members show up to share! Of course, we'll open the floor to questions and suggestions as well.

Review: Dr. Luigi

Dr. Mario is the bane of my puzzle gaming career. I loved it ever since I picked it up for the first time in 1990, but I've never really reached the point where I can say that I mastered it, unlike many other Nintendo releases.

Having said that, I've stuck with it all these years because the simplistic Tetris-like format works. Although Dr. Luigi doesn't really change a whole lot, it's still the same "Dr." formula you know and love, with a few welcome twists.

I'm going to be blunt here, and say that beyond a couple of awesome moments, 2013 sucked absolute balls, and I can't wait to move onto the new year. Not in a while have I been so excited to see a year get pushed behind me, and I'd love to see you guys come hang out, and celebrate alongside the live crowd and myself this evening on Mash Tactics, as we welcome in 2014.

Join in on the conversation as we grab some community members on Skype, swig a few adult beverages, and talk about what 2013 offered, both good and bad, in the gaming world and beyond. Of course this is a variety gaming show, so, expect some of that as well. What games you ask? Hell if I know exactly, but I'm pretty sure all games played tonight will be of the multiplayer variety. If I know anything about past broadcasts like this, I can almost bet that some version of Worms will be played at some point, but beyond that, it's just going to be a grab-bag of whatever. That shiny Pokemon automator has been completed

The creator of that impressive shiny Pokemon automator, dekuNukem, writes in to say that the machine has been improved since we last covered it. Here's a look at the new, final version.

The amount of human input needed has been further reduced, resulting in a system that can catch shiny Pokemon in various states (while walking, surfing, fishing, or in a horde encounter) and continue after nabbing the coveted creature. What's more, the breeding process -- including depositing hatched eggs into the PC -- has been automated. My goodness!

"It might look like a lot of work for a kid's game, but to me it was more of a great exercise of microcontroller-related topics, I had fun making it, and learned a lot, so it's far from a waste of time at least to me," says dekuNukem. "I have made the program open-source so those who has what it takes can build one themselves, and I will not sell it." It's Pokemon. We understand.

As 2012 came to a close, I really enjoyed my opportunity to tackle every Resident Evil, Tony Hawk, Kingdom Hearts, and Wario game ever. In 2013, I took on Mega Man Classic, Mega Man X, Devil May Cry, God of War, and the two new Zelda games.

Before I embark upon the journey of gaming in 2014 however (and all of the Quests that it entails), I have one more Carter's Quest to share with the world.

GOG.com is no longer selling the Fallout games

I sincerely hope you managed to grab Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics while they were being offered for free on GOG.com. The games are no longer purchasable, as was made clear during the giveaway, however if you do own them on the service you'll continue to have access to them and their bonus content going forward.

"These classic titles have been with us since day one, that is for over 5 years now, and they were always one of the highlights of the selection of games that we offer," wrote GOG.com. "There are very few titles in the history of computer role-playing games, that have had so much impact on the gaming landscape, players' expectations, and even the popular culture."

This removal is believed to be a result of Bethesda Softworks purchasing the rights to the franchise from Interplay. Curiously, these specific titles are still for sale on Steam. Sad to see this happen, as Fallout was one of the major attention-grabbing properties back when GOG.com was first starting out and its inclusion in the library helped legitimize the site.

Sega teases Ryo Hazuki's return to racing

With the end of the year approaching, Sega let loose a nice surprise for fans on their Twitter page. Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed is chock full of references and fan service, and now we can expect the return of Shenmue's Ryo Hazuki in their much-loved racing title. Though Ryo was a playable character in the previous All-Stars Racing game, he was noticeably absent for the sequel. Now, after weeks of rumors and some leaks, Sega has finally come out with some official images for his return.

Surprisingly, Ryo has ditched his reliable forklift for a vehicle that transforms into various references to classic Sega arcade titles. From Out Run, Space Harrier, and Hang-On -- it's clear that the folks at Sega had some fun with this character. He's got one hell of a license plate too. Sega really knows how to troll fans, but of course it's all in good fun.

While we still don't have a date for when he'll be available, it's likely we'll see an announcement soon.

Humble Store Winter Sale Encore is on now

For those looking for deals, the Steam sale isn't the only game in town. The Humble Store, made famous for its Humble Bundles, has been having its own winter sale, marking games down up to 75% while giving a portion of the revenues to charity. The sale was scheduled to end today, but has been extended for this "encore" until January 3.

This encore will feature all of the best-selling deals that appeared through the sale's normal run. These include some of our favorites like Dust: An Elysian Tail for $3.75, Guacamelee! for $3.75, Monaco: What's Yours is Mine for $2.99, among others. There are a lot of really great titles on here for only a few bucks! If you don't already own them, now is the time.

Review: Batman: Arkham Origins: Initiation

I was pretty disappointed with Arkham Origins. Maybe not as crushingly disappointed as Jim was, but I still felt like it was the weakest entry in the Arkham saga so far, and Warner Bros. Montreal didn't really do anything to make me confident in the future of the series.

Sadly, the newest DLC doesn't do them any favors either.

Here's the new PS4 commercial for Japan. I suppose it's neat, but maybe it kind of stings for some of the Japanese gamers to see the launches of the rest of the world happening first. Or, the best things come to those who wait, right?

Gloops! Gloops! What a great name. They say it's a combination of global and loop. I like to keep it simple -- it rhymes with poop and sounds funny.

Destiny-viii.jp is a new teaser page posted today. This co-production between mobile game publisher gloops and Square Enix is coming January 8, 2014. It's probably a mobile thing, right? Any ideas? Does the URL give you any clues?

Arkham Origins teasing Humanitarian of the Year Awards

Today is the day that the Arkham Origins Facebook page is going to make a "surprise announcement," and it looks like the first hint has been dropped. The post simply states, "You are cordially invited to the Humanitarian of the Year Awards at the Wayne Manor on New Year’s Eve."

Whether this is actual DLC or some viral event is unknown, but we'll keep you posted. I really hope that upcoming story add-on is good, because the Season Pass is a complete bust so far -- stay tuned for our review of Initiation later today.

Warframe rated for Xbox One

Earlier this year, Digital Extremes said that they'd love for their Warframe to come to Xbox One. It's up for PS4 and PC, but last we heard it was on Microsoft to give the nod to the independent title. 

I guess that happened some time along the way. If the PEGI rating we saw this morning is any indication, Warframe is also coming to Xbox One. Soon, too.

D-Arts' next Mega Man figure may be Mega Man Zero

Black Zero has already been revealed as the newest Mega Man figure in the D-Arts line, but we may have a hint at what's coming next. A new message has been posted by Japanese site Rockman Unity (those guys look like they have so much fun by the way), which, according to Mega Man Network, reads "what if you regret making me a poseable figure..."

This is most likely a reference to the line "what if you regret making me remember," which is uttered by Mega Man Zero -- Inafune's most treasured creation. Yeah, it's another Zero (making this the fourth iteration so far), but he'd still be a welcome addition -- I'm a huge fan of the D-Arts line and wouldn't mind picking it up.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is nearly done

If you haven't heard, there are three Shantae projects in the works by WayForward -- two new original games, and a PC port of Risky's Revenge. One of those new games, Pirate's Curse, is set to his the 3DS at some point, and according to their Kickstarter, it's "nearing the finish line." We've been waiting a while for this one, so that's good news.

Elsewhere, Risky's Revenge is a go for Steam, and apparently this will be a "Director's Cut" of the game, taking the "best parts" of the original game and bits of the iOS version to make it the "best version yet." The other new game, Half-Genie Hero (which will arrive on just about every platform ever), is still in production, and is moving along "nicely."

Shantae is WayForward's bread and butter, quality wise, and it seems to be what they do best. I can't wait to try out Pirate's Curse.

Diablo III gets a PS3 demo in Japan

I thought the console version of Diablo III was quite good, and Square Enix thinks it's good enough to publish in Japan. The game will be a PS3 exclusive over there, and is set to launch on January 30th, 2014.

Until then, Japanese gamers can grab a demo starting this week that shows off a tiny slice of the game -- allowing you to play as the Wizard and Barbarian. The rest of us are just waiting for Reaper of Souls, the expansion that's set to drop in March 2014.

Things the Wii U needs more than AAA third-party support

In the past, the success of a console and its number of marquee third-party titles engaged in a chicken-and-egg relationship where it was hard to tell which drove which. The NES had much more third-party support than the Sega Master System, and it was by far the more successful of the two. The SNES and the Genesis had about equal third-party support, and were also about equal in sales. The PS1 and PS2 had huge third-party support and huge sales. Did the third parties support the consoles because they sold well, or did they sell well because third parties supported them? Fans would argue either point no end, but regardless, the correlation between third-party support and consoles sales seemed pretty clear.

Until the Wii came along.

The Wii certainly got a lot of third-party games, but very few of them are what most of us would call "marquee" titles. On-rail shooter spinoffs of major action/horror series, strange cartoonish violent action/comedy beat-'em-ups, mini-game collections, and very little in the way of major AAA budgeted games. Yet the console managed to go on to be Nintendo's best-selling home system in history, and arguably the most influential and profitable console of the last generation. Similarly, the 3DS seems to be carrying on quite well for itself, with nary a AAA third-party game in sight, unless you count Resident Evil: Revelations and Monster Hunter 4.

This begs the question, does the Wii U need AAA third-party support to stay afloat, or are there other things that would be even more beneficial to the console in the long run?

Devil's Third is coming next year, promises Itagaki

I haven't exactly been wondering what designer Tomonobu Itagaki's been up to as of late, but now I'm curious. His team at Valhalla Game Studios was working on Devil's Third last we heard, although updates on the project have been few and far between. I'd just assumed it wasn't going to see release and the studio had quietly moved on to something new.

"Next year will be the year we'll be releasing the console game, Devil's Third," Itagaki told 4Gamer. "At the moment, it is about 80% complete, and we can about see the end of it. However, there's still a little more polishing that needs to be done. That's also one of the reasons I've decided to work independently. For you fans out there, I'd like to apologize for making you worry. We'll be going all out next year, so please look forward to it."

I like Ninja Gaiden (both old and new). I even like Dead or Alive, despite generally not being much of a fighting game player. But I haven't been given many compelling reasons to have confidence in Devil's Third. The game did survive the demise of THQ, though. If Itagaki and co. can finish that final 20 percent next year as promised, that's really what this is: a survivor.

January is a terrific month for PlayStation Plus members with titles like Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons (PS3) and Don't Starve (PS4). But we're still a week off! The last addition to the Instant Game Collection for 2013 is Urban Trial Freestyle for PS Vita. Look for it tomorrow.

This obviously isn't as glamorous as what's coming in the new year, however, the game is one I doubt as many people have played, so there's always that. Think off-brand Trials HD and you're getting close. In his review, Chris called Urban Trial Freestyle "a serviceable game. It's just a shame that a little more couldn't have been done to make Freestyle leap ahead of the pack."

I've always wanted arms like a blacksmith. Not weaponry. I'm talking those sinewy anchor arms and mallet fists that would have you coughing up blood with a few quick pummels. Yet, they're delicate and expert enough to emboss fine designs into metals and hug kittens.

Man at Arms' blacksmiths went ahead and made an absolutely Chromulent rendition of Chrom's Falchion from Fire Emblem: Awakening. Or is it Lucina's Parallel Falchion? Hmm?!?

What's more, he made it on suggestions from the comments, so go comment on the video and ask him to make more cool game swords like their Buster Sword, Minecraft sword, and Skyrim axe. I'm voting for Yun-seong's Han Guang from Soul Calibur II

The real world is '80s inspired chiptunes, apparently

I have been a part of the "real world" for a few years now, and I can say from experience that it certainly is not as glamorous as William "WillRock" Harby's new album Welcome to the Real World. We have previously seen a snippet of Harby's work as a contributor for and compiler of 9-bit Blitzkrieg, but this one is all his.

It is described as an '80s inspired nostalgia trip, and it incorporates elements of progressive rock, chiptunes, and a bit of cheesy vocals on one track. The final track can be downloaded for free, while the rest of the album sells for £3, or about $5. Of course, the entire album can be streamed using the widget below.

A 3D artist at SuperGenius by the name of Robert Fink went a step above for his marriage proposal: he created a videogame. "I couldn't allow myself to just do a normal proposal, it had to be special," he wrote. "Something we would remember forever to remind us where we started. Simple times playing games together growing up and learning that games can convey all sorts of emotion, I wanted her to see all the spikes I would jump over for her."

The game itself, Knight Man: A Quest for Love, is playable from a browser.

Fink, along with two of his buddies, developed the project in secret over the course of approximately five months while using the all-too-effective excuse of crunch time at work. When it was finally ready, he convinced his girlfriend to come playtest a new game at SuperGenius, culminating in the big question being raised in Knight Man, her saying yes, and family members and co-workers rushing in to congratulate the couple.

There's even a heartwarming reaction video. Just try not to smile at this one.

I'm going to play this Mew-Genics track all day

Two Caturdays ago, Team Meat showed off cat identities in its upcoming cat-lady sim Mew-Genics. Notably, there was a cat with a mustache.

Hard to top, right?

Well, revealing a couple amazing tracks, including the above "Dirty Mittens," might top it because I can listen to it on repeat all day while working whereas it's slightly harder to tab over to look at that adorable mustache cat.  It's literally mewsic to my ears.

People can get restless for another entry in their dream franchise. For many years, Ridge Racer was the dominant racing game for some, offering up a sense of style with a selection of great tracks, and fun cars.

But in an odd twist of fate, the newest title in the Ridge Racer series isn't a glorious return to console racing -- it's actually a mobile game. It is a return to the franchise's roots though, and if you can overlook the inclusion of annoying in-app purchases, it's a decent ride.

Minecraft on Wii U 'makes sense' but isn't happening now

Despite having no interest in playing ports of Minecraft on new platforms, plenty of others are eager to do exactly that, and I do think getting this piece of pop culture on Wii U would benefit Nintendo. Every game matters. And considering the GamePad's functionality, it'd also likely be a worthwhile version of Minecraft in its own right. But such a port isn't happening -- not yet, anyway.

A recent tweet by creator Markus "Notch" Persson covered the topic: "I agree a Wii U version would make sense, btw. The only reason for no current plans is we've got too much work already. I <3 Nintendo."

I don't doubt that the studio is busy. I also don't see Minecraft losing significance anytime soon. As such, I think this will be something for Mojang and 4J Studios to look at again down the road.

Mega Man X will help celebrate Free Comic Book Day 2014

In case you haven't heard, comic book publishers and retailers run a yearly "Free Comic Book Day" promotion. Basically, you go into your local comic book shop, grab a bunch of free comics (some stores limit you to a few pickups), meet new people, and realize that said stores exist.

Archie ran a free comic book last year with their Mega Man and Sonic line, and it looks like they're repeating that in 2014. On May 3rd, 2014, you'll be able to grab a special comic involving Mega Man X. It's a "flipped" comic, so it has Mega Man on one side and Sonic on the other.

Make note of the date and make sure to shop up early if you want a shot at grabbing the book of your choice! As a side note, Street Fighter will make an appearance as well.

Massively's Third Annual Frindie Awards

Frindie Awards
It's time once again for me to throw out my awards for the best of free-to-play, indie, and oddball MMOs, a real niche-within-a-niche. It might seem that I am assigned many of these titles as though I were some modern day Mikey, but the truth is that I get a huge thrill out of finding a new game but get even more of a thrill when I realize that no one is covering it. I had to really think hard about the criteria for the awards this year, mainly because "indie" is quickly becoming one of those often hard-to-define words, alongside "MMORPG" and "free-to-play." Fortunately, I think I know it when I see it.

I kept my choices to games that I have actually played this year. I wanted to avoid games that appear to be really cool. If you want a more broad batch of prizes, check out Massively's best of awards. (Side note: I voted for Defiance as my game of the year.)

These awards are for games that are being created on a shoestring or independent of massive budgets. Some of them are connected to some money, of course, but instead of trying to define "indie," I will only repeat: You'll know it when you see it.

    World of Warcraft survey asks, 'How much would you pay?'

    There's a new survey floating around from Blizzard that's polling World of Warcraft players about how much they might be willing to pay for various features in the game.

    Among the topics covered is a new annual pass program, whether the Warlords of Draenor expansion should be sold for $39 or $49, and how much players might pay for a character upgrade to level 90. One such upgrade will be included in the upcoming expansion, but this survey strongly hints that Blizzard is looking to monetize the feature as well.

    Out of curiosity, how much would you pay for these features and what would you like to see included in an annual pass program?

    Quests are increasingly an MMO enthusiast's bread and butter, often becoming the staple component of a game's typical serving of progressive content. Over the years, developers have tried to serve up this familiar progression mechanic in many different ways: The modern themepark MMO makes us fetch, carry, explore, and investigate our way to the endgame through countless quest types and story arcs. Among the varieties of quest on offer, kill quests seem to cause the most tears and tantrums amongst picky players. No matter what developers do, there just isn't much love for missions that send characters off with a shopping list of mundane creatures to crush.

    Kill quests have become so common that plenty of MMOs have cheekily referenced the "10 rats" trope by literally making us smash in some rodent skulls, but killing cute, twitchy-nosed creatures is not the real problem. It's the uninspired kill list mechanic that often incites complaints of developer laziness, an argument that I don't think is justified. Kill quests exist to hone your skills through repetition, but they don't have to feel like an arduous grinding task and are actually a very useful mechanic for game designers.

    In this week's MMO Mechanics, I stand up for the unloved stepchild of questing; I'll show you that killing a list of creatures can be both contextually engaging and mechanistically interesting, depending on how it's presented.

      Leaderboard: What was the best year for MMOs?

      So, it's like, 2014. Happy New Year or something. Let's take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of the MMO genre's more notable years. Maybe you're partial to 1999, since it gave us Asheron's Call and EverQuest. How about 2001, which introduced Anarchy Online, World War II Online (now known as Battleground: Europe), and Dark Age of Camelot?

      Don't forget 2003, which featured the launches of Star Wars: Galaxies, EVE Online, PlanetSide, Shadowbane, and A Tale in the Desert, just to name a few. Oh, OK, we probably shouldn't forget 2004 either, since it brought us World of Warcraft, EverQuest II, and City of Heroes.

      My point is, there are plenty of choices when it comes to picking great MMO years. What about the best year in terms of MMO launches, though? Vote after the cut!

        The Daily Grind: Are you a creature of habit?

        To some extent, I think that most of us are creatures of habit when it comes to our lives and our gaming. We go through an experimental phase, we learn over time what works for us, and then we settle down into a comfortable routine from then on. There's a reason why adults tend to stick with the same haircut after age 28, kids.

        Speaking for myself, I definitely have my comfort zones in MMOs. I prefer theme parks over sandboxes, I like hybrid and pet classes most of all, I almost always go with a short race if given the option, and I am quite happy soloing most of the time. But lately I've been trying to challenge myself to try new things, to go through a new experimental phase, and see what I might be missing. I'm giving myself permission to break the habits and enjoy new flavors and new vistas.

        I'm curious today if there are any others out there that recognize the comfortable routines and choices they've established, and if, like me, you've decided to venture outside of the bubble to lands you've long rejected.

            Since it's our very last Jukebox Heroes column of the year on the very last day of the year, I thought it would be most appropriate to open up the reader request lines once again and feature MMO tunes that are your favorites.               The Elder Scrolls Online
              Today is the last day of 2013, a long year of extended betas, early access pre-purchases, and soft launch nonsense. The release slate for 2014, however, brings slightly more excitement. 2014 is the year we'll (hopefully) first set foot into Elder Scrolls Online, EverQuest Next Landmark, Destiny, Star Citizen, WildStar, and more. It's the year in which a record number of MMOs will go live on consoles. And most importantly, it's likely the year in which consumers will decide whether the traditional MMO is dead or just in need of a good kick in the pants.

              Ordinarily I'm not the type to make New Year's resolutions. It seems arbitrary to hang important life changes on a date on the calendar. But the end of the year does bring a nice opportunity to look back on my gaming habits over the last 12 months and provides me with an opportunity to draft a list of things I'd like to do better moving forward. 2014 will be an MMO year like no other, so perhaps it warrants a few adjustments in behavior.

              With that in mind, these are my 2014 MMO resolutions.

                Hyperspace Beacon: The rest of SWTOR's year-end report
                The end of the year is nigh, and as I promised, I will give you my final thoughts on Star Wars: The Old Republic and its achievements for 2013. I wanted my assessment to be based on something other than squishy feelings. Of course, opinions are extremely subjective, but that doesn't mean they cannot be based on something a bit more substantial. In July, I created a mid-term report card for SWTOR using Dr. Richard Battle's studies as the starting point. Bartle's study allowed me to step out of my normal playstyle and observe the game from the standpoint of different types of MMO players.

                Some players find discovery and exploration to be the most important part of an MMO. Others want to achieve the highest scores or defeat the biggest bosses. Some want to prove that they are better than other players in direct combat, and yet other players want to use the game as an interactive chatroom or work with a group to achieve a goal. Few people fall neatly into one category or other, but nearly everyone will have a dominant motivation.

                A couple of weeks ago, I graded the game based on the perspective of Bartle's Killer type, giving SWTOR a C- in the category. Because of Galactic Starfighter and 4v4 arenas, I raised the grade from the F I gave it during the mid-term report. I gave the game an A- for Achievers, B for Explorers, and C for the Socializer earlier this year. Has SWTOR been able to raise its grade in these other categories?
