| Lucky Koreans: Ghosts 'n Goblins Online beta videos Posted: 31 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST
Show of hands if anyone remembers that a Ghosts 'n Goblins Online Korean MMO was unveiled back in 2010. I figured it would have be cancelled by now -- I'm still bitter that Rockman Online was silently shut down. But nope! Developer Seed9 just held a closed beta the other night, and Asian game aficionado Steparu has fresh video of his play session. You wonder, how do you adapt a hard-as-balls platformer into an MMO while retaining that same level of difficulty? Apparently... you don't. But that actually works for me. I could never get past the second level in any Ghosts 'n Goblins entry, so perhaps this game would be more my speed. That's assuming it ever makes it out here, which I bet it won't because Capcom is kooky like that. From Steparu's vids (the rest posted after the break), you've got your familiar MMO trappings -- character creation, hot bar, big boss gang bangs -- along with classic GnG touches. I especially like the intro movie in which a Red Arremer tries to get fresh with the princess and the princess is all like, bitch, keep your hands to yourself! She ain't takin' no sh*t. I admire that. Ghosts'n Goblins Online Preview [Steparu]

| 'Sixth Generation Car DLC' headed to NASCAR: Inside Line Posted: 31 Jan 2013 02:30 PM PST A new line cars are headed to NASCAR The Game: Inside Line for the 2013 season next month in the form of the "Sixth Generation Car DLC," Activision announced today. This DLC brings with it the Sixth Generation NASCAR Sprint Cup Series models including the brand new Chevrolet SS, Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry. The new cars will be available for use online and in select single player modes, and can be purchased using either in-game Ticket currency or as part of the upcoming Inside Line Highlights -- a series of in-game DLC packs use telemetry data from real world NASCAR races to let you relive and even re-write actual races. |
| PBS looks at the rise of eSports Posted: 31 Jan 2013 02:00 PM PST
The wonderful PBS Off Book series latest look at gaming culture focuses on the world of eSports. From its humble beginnings with arcade fighting games, to its current explosion in the mainstream with real-time strategy and MOBA games. The video hits the key points anyone that doesn't know about the scene should know about, and more surprisingly, touches on the issue of sexism in the eSports community. My favorite part was on Damien Dailidena's history with Street Fighter, and his status as the 25th Anniversary Street Fighter II Tournament champion. |
| Action-RPG Akaneiro: Demon Hunters launches for browsers Posted: 31 Jan 2013 01:30 PM PST Akaneiro: Demon Hunters is probably my favorite thing to come out of Spicy Horse Games. Already Greenlit for Steam, it is now on the verge of getting funded on Kickstarter -- approximately 90 percent of the goal has been reached, with under two days to go -- and can be played online through SpicyWorld and Kongregate. While this is yet another action-RPG in a time when we've got some rather good ones vying for our attention, it does have a cool Japanese folklore setting going for it. I haven't dug in deep enough to really comment on Akaneiro yet -- generally speaking, it could use some extra polish -- but it's free to play and I must admit to adoring the imagery. For a while there, it was somewhat unclear to me what the Kickstarter was for. Put simply, it's to raise money to expand the game's scope and deliver a "truly final state" across all target platforms. You can read up on the necessary details at the campaign page, and try out Akaneiro for yourself online or by downloading the client at the official site.

| Heart of the Swarm introduces global play, groups & clans Posted: 31 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST
In a new video on the social features of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, community manager Kevin Johnson goes over many of the anticipated features included in the new expansion. Perhaps the most anticipated addition is the ability to play users in realms other than your own, which Mr. Johnson shows off in the video. Finally, I can get destroyed by people all over the world! He also goes over the cleaner user interface, chat channels, and clan and group management. Clans are meant to be competitive groups, complete with a hardcore clan tag to add in front of your username. Groups, on the other hand, are somewhat casual -- they're more or less just players with common interests. Expect a Destructoid group as quick as possible! |
| Another chance to earn a retro Resident Evil 6 costume Posted: 31 Jan 2013 12:30 PM PST Last time we brought up those great throwback costumes for Resident Evil 6, we said that players would need to collectively earn 15 million zombie kills as part of a challenge on ResidentEvil.net to earn a single outfit. That goal was met earlier this month, so if you put down the game and forgot you had participated, don't forget to pick up your reward. As promised, there will indeed be opportunities to earn more of these EX3 costumes, and soon. Another event, Neutralize the Threat, actually starts tomorrow. This one demands 30,000 Ogroman kills by February 8. Can it be done? Pick up RE6 EX3 costumes, plus register for Revelations goodies [Capcom-Unity] |
| Tomb Raider coming back to comics Posted: 31 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST Dark Horse and Crystal Dynamics will be bringing out a new comic book series based on the new Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider: The Beginning is written by the game's lead writer, Rhianna Pratchett, and will be a prequel to the events leading up to the upcoming Tomb Raider. The overall story focuses on how the crew are searching for the mysterious island Lara and friends eventually shipwreck on as part of archaeology TV show. Given how Lara doesn't become the action-adventure heroine we know and love until she crashes on this island, I'm imagining that the comic will be rather action-less. Oh, and the hardcover version will be available for free to those that pre-order the game at Best Buy. Neat. |
| XSEED is localizing every Japanese game ever in 2013 Posted: 31 Jan 2013 11:30 AM PST Killer is Dead isn't the only bun in XSEED's oven. The publisher has a whole lot more in store for those with a predilection for all that is obscure and Japanese in the world. First on the docket is Ys I & II Chronicles+. These enhanced remakes of the first two titles in Falcom's acclaimed Ys series are coming next month for PC via Steam. Next is role-player / farming sim Rune Factory 4, which will be sprouting up on 3DS this summer. Finally, a pair of action-RPGs, Valhalla Knights 3 and Ys: Memories of Celceta, are both expected for PlayStation Vita this fall. And on top of all that Pandora's Tower is coming on March 26. Where does XSEED find the time? |
| Temple Run 2 becomes 'fastest growing mobile game' Posted: 31 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST Temple Run 2 has garnered over 50 million downloads since its January 17 release on iOS, setting the record for "fastest growing mobile game," developer Imangi Studios today announced. The record was previously held by Angry Birds Space, released last April, which reached the 50 million mark in 35 days (and has a price tag of $1). Temple Run 2 earned over 6 million downloads in less than 24 hours on Apple's App Store alone, quickly rising to the top spot in the 'Free' category, and followed suit a week later when released on the Google Play Store and Amazon Marketplace. Whether or not it will top its older brother's number of 170 million total downloads remains to be seen, but it's off to a good start so far. |
| Hideo Kojima is now an action figure Posted: 31 Jan 2013 10:30 AM PST The father of Metal Gear, Hideo Kojima, has now been immortalized in action-figure form. Taking the shape of a cyborg ninja, Kojima is rocking it out in the toy world compliments of Square Enix, who sent a Play Arts figure his way. Kojima even had a little fun with re-attaching the head to a Solid Snake figure, and tweeted that he was putting the toy in his "Metal Gear Solid 4 cabinet." | Former THQ president on where the company went wrong Posted: 31 Jan 2013 10:15 AM PST While THQ was split up following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy, not all of its properties have been auctioned off yet, and there's still plenty left to say about the now-defunct publisher. MCV ran an insightful piece today covering the company's collapse with quotes from some of the parties involved in the bidding process. Of special note is a recap of the company's mistakes from ex-president Jason Rubin, who joined THQ in March of last year. "I think it is incorrect to attribute THQ's predicament with overall changes in the industry," he told MCV. "To be sure, all triple-A publishers have been under pressure, but THQ had every chance to survive had it not made massive mistakes. "Unfortunately, the mistakes that were made long before I joined, like the incredible losses attached to uDraw, massive wasted capital in the unpublished MMO that was cancelled, sticking with children's and casual titles far after mobile and tablets had killed the business, bad, late, or otherwise inferior titles like Homefront, and a generally haphazard and inefficient approach to deal making, left the company with too much negative hanging on its books," Rubin explained. "THQ had to be restructured to survive, and unfortunately, the restructuring ended up in an asset sale rather than an acquisition. There are certainly things to be said about challenges in the mid-tier triple-A publishing business, but I don't think that conflating it with THQ's experience is helpful." Asked if luck was a factor, he replied: "I think that luck plays a role in success and failure, but THQ's decisions and execution were the major reason for its failure." |
| Impressions: Max Payne 3's Deathmatch Made in Heaven DLC Posted: 31 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST Rockstar has released the newest -- and last -- downloadable content pack for Max Payne 3, Deathmatch Made in Heaven. The DLC contains a new co-op mode, weapons, items, three additional multiplayer modes, and a single-player challenge. I've been playing around with the new content for a few days now, and in that time I've only managed to get into a few matches. I was playing on the PC, so other platforms might have more people playing, but Max's multiplayer is somewhat of a ghost town these days, sadly. Max Payne 3: Deathmatch Made in Heaven DLC (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360) Let's start off with the co-op mode, Dead Man Walking. In this mode, two players work together as Max and Passos to fight off waves of endless enemies. It's a horde mode, which just about every shooter has these days, so I don't think too many people will be surprised by anything in here. As you kill bad guys, you unlock points that can be used to open new areas of the map, or open containers to find more weapons and ammo. While it's definitely not anything new, it's actually the best multiplayer experience I've had with Max Payne 3 as it's just simple and fun. It's Max and Passos killing crooks and trading one liners. Honestly, this should have been with the game when it shipped. Since you only need two players, it wasn't that hard to find a match most of the time. It's not amazing, but it's also not offensive. As a heads up, you do have to beat the game on at least the Detective difficulty setting in order to unlock this mode. If you haven't finished the single-player somehow by now, you might want to hold off. The three multiplayer modes are Marked Man, Run & Stun, and Time Attack. Time Attack and Marked Man are slight variations of the standard Deathmatch and they aren't all that exciting. The rule changes are minimal, and they don't really do a whole lot to spice things up. Based on my experience, most PC players are staying away from these modes and sticking with standard deathmatches. The most interesting-looking mode is undoubtedly Run & Stun. One player becomes Captain Baseball Bat Boy's enemy, Saci, and he has to go running around stunning everyone else. Once a player is stunned, they are on Saci's side. Sadly, it's not as fun as it sounds. I think it's mostly due to the low player volume. I never managed to get more than four people in a round at once. The new weapons are all for melee use and include a cattle prod, nightstick, stun gun, and pepper spray. While fun to use, they don't exactly bring a whole lot to the table. There are a handful of new items to add boosts and protect you from different types of damage as well. This isn't a terrible batch of DLC by any means, and I've definitely seen worse. The problem is that it's essentially multiplayer content for a game nobody seems to care about anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love Max Payne 3 -- it's my personal game of the year for 2012, as a matter of fact -- but solely for its single-player experience. The multiplayer is decent, but Deathmatch Made in Heaven doesn't do much for it. If you are interested in a new co-op mode to play with a buddy, it might be worth getting, but I really can't recommend it. If you do get the add-on, you'll be spending a lot of time alone waiting for people to join a match. |
