The Path of Exile: Impression - Reverberation of the Past

The Path of Exile began Open Beta yesterday on January 23, 2013. The may be news to some but definitely something awaited by many action-oriented RPG fans of the genre. Path of Exile takes place in Wraeclast. From what I gathered through my first few hours in Path of Exile, it is a forsaken land where people have been out cast in to like a wilderness or no man's land kind of atmosphere.

The sequel that could: Neo Aquarium 2: Ace of Seafood

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST

The sequel that could: Neo Aquarium 2: Ace of Seafood screenshot

It was such a shame to hear that Neo Aquarium: King of Crustaceans was not a good videogame. For years, I've longed to play a modern take on Odell Down Under that didn't take itself seriously -- like, at all -- and King of Crustaceans could have partially scratched that itch. It's still nice to hear (via Rock, Paper, Shotgun) that a follow-up is happening in Neo Aquarium 2: Ace of Seafood.

The sequel is a third-person shooter in which you control a laser-firing sardine that literally blows up upon being killed. You can try your hand at an early build, which appears to be more of a tech demo than anything, in your browser. And trust me, you'll want to do that if only to mess around with the game's destructible environment.

While Ace of Seafood isn't good, exactly -- at least not yet -- I'm eager to see the concept fleshed out. Hopefully it will blossom into something greater than King of Crustaceans. Something that maybe even normal human beings can play and objectively consider to be a quality experience.

Action-RPG Path of Exile enters open beta

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 02:00 PM PST

Action-RPG Path of Exile enters open beta screenshot

While it feels like we have been overloaded with announcements of betas over the past week and it's all starting to blend together, news that online action-RPG Path of Exile has opened up access to a pre-release build should be very welcome indeed. For those who are already playing the game, rest easy knowing there won't be any more character wipes.

"We've had amazing support from our community throughout development," said Grinding Gear Games producer Chris Wilsonfor. "Their belief in our vision is making is possible to deliver a great game." This is made all the more impressive knowing what can happen when your game doesn't live up to expectations.

I was going to pass on this due to feeling action-RPG'd out right now, but I've encountered increasingly positive buzz surrounding Path of Exile as of late. I'd imagine some of you can attest to that. It'll be that darned skill tree that does me in -- I just know it.

Free Ace of Spades 'Classic mode' channels alpha version

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST

Free Ace of Spades 'Classic mode' channels alpha version screenshot

Prior to being picked up by Jagex and released to a wider audience on Steam, Ace of Spades had an alpha build that was available as a free download. While both versions carry the same name, it was the earlier Ace of Spades with its trench warfare that players seemed to prefer. Now, the new game -- the commercial one on Steam -- is getting a free Classic Mode as DLC:

  • Classic Specific Class: Deuce Character Class – An updated version of the single character class which featured in the Classic version of the game.
  • New Maps: 5 new battle maps including a community created map.
  • Traditional Gameplay: In a nostalgic nod to the original game, the Classic Mode DLC brings back classic game modes and the trench warfare theme.
  • New Strategy Focus: Slower gameplay and maneuverability gives tactical strategists a chance to shine and beat their opponents into submission.

This content is supposed to drop today, so if you happen to own AoS already, perhaps it'll be worth it to check back in. I'm somewhat worried that fans of the alpha will feel this isn't enough, since that's how these situations have gone down in the past despite best efforts, but I do love that a) they're trying and b) it's free.

Hotline Miami soundtrack is now on Steam

Hotline Miami soundtrack is now on Steam screenshot

Hotline Miami is a game that I think has all the right ingredients working together perfectly: the tight controls, the flexible gameplay, the deliberately lo-fi graphics -- but most of all, the absolutely banging soundtrack which you can now purchase on Steam. While you're at it, the game itself is on sale for $5.

From the woozy dub of Sun Araw's "Horse Steppin" to Jasper Byrne's squelchy electro-pop "Hotline," the soundtrack to Hotline Miami was one of the best of the year. You can already hear all 21 tracks on Soundcloud, but I want those MP3s on my iPod to liven up my morning commute.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to play the soundtrack at high volumes and worry that a man in a pig mask is going to burst through my door and bludgeon me to death with a baseball bat....

Capcom: No RE Revelations on Vita because REASONS

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST

Capcom: No RE Revelations on Vita because REASONS screenshot

After dancing around the rumors for a while, Capcom finally announced that Resident Evil Revelations for the 3DS is being ported to PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. As inconspicuous as a gushing head wound is PS Vita's total absence from the list of platforms..

Capcom Product Manager Mike Lunn tried to answer fans' inquiries as to why Vita was getting snubbed once again, but I doubt anyone was buying his responses. He declares, "... when we were developing Revelations for new platforms we really wanted to hone in on the experience you get with a large format screen, surround sound, etc. This type of setup really helps players get sucked into the horror vibe and enjoy the game to its fullest extent." I thought the whole point of the Vita was to have a comparable experience to home consoles. Wasn't that the plan?

And what of the original, clearly non-HD 3DS original? Why couldn't that work on the Vita? "3DS and [PS Vita] infrastructure let alone developing games for them are extremely different beasts. Even just the screens as you mention are completely different resolutions / functions." The resolutions are different, guys! It would be too complicated to adapt the game to run on a machine with a higher resolution screen! Oh, wait a minute...

Stop beating around the bush and just say that Capcom thinks the Vita is not a viable money-making platform. The fans would at least appreciate the fresh honesty.

First screenshot of Dreamfall Chapters released

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 11:45 AM PST

First screenshot of Dreamfall Chapters released screenshot

Considering there was a six-year wait between The Longest Journey and its sequel Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, it shouldn't be a surprise that we've had to wait until 2013 to see the first glimpses of Dreamfall Chapters: The Longest Journey

The previous Dreamfall games has lush, natural settings both in the worlds of Earth and the magical realm of Arcadia. This solitary screenshot of Marcuria in autumn is fairly pretty but I'm itching to see more of the worlds and especially the characters -- I want to see who's returning.

Now that Ragnar Tørnquist's previous project The Secret World has launched, creative director is free to develop a long-awaited sequel to 2006's Dreamfall. Red Thread is Tørnquist's new studio, independent of previous studio Funcom but still closely tied together. No word on any release date but PC and Mac releases are both planned.

Leland Yee: Gamers have no credibility in violence debate

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 11:30 AM PST

Leland Yee: Gamers have no credibility in violence debate screenshot

Leland Yee, a man famous for lying about videogames and draining huge amounts of tax money in his war on the industry, has suggested those affected by his bullshit should keep their mouths shut. According to the hypocritical liar, we care nothing outside our lust for violence, and should leave the debate in his capable hands.

"Gamers have got to just quiet down," said the man whose vendetta once cost taxpayers $1 million. "Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry's lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest."

While gamers -- myself included -- regularly respond to uninformed news pundits or insane ex-lawyers with axes to grind, Leland Yee has always remained the most vile player in the long-running violence debate. His ignorance does more than just make gamers angry, it actively wastes American money and the time of politicians as he tries to make his unconstitutional preferences become law.

Not as famous as some other shit-flinging malcontents, Yee is easily one of the most insidious. As disgusted as I am that a man possessed of so rotten a character would dare suggest others lack credibility, it could only be taken as a compliment when spilled from such a corrupted set of lips.

How Frog Fractions became a shrine to discovery

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST

How Frog Fractions became a shrine to discovery screenshot

Frog Fractions is not a small experience, especially by the expectations of a free flash game. There is a lot going on beneath the surface here, more than I ever expected. After playing through the game, I couldn't help but wonder "Why the hell was this made?"

Luckily for me (and you, if you're also interested in interesting things), we have the answers to this question. Jim Crawford, creator of Frog Fractions, told us everything and more about the process of making his breakout hit (which sadly does not include anything that resembles Break-Out. You'll have to head over to Futility Pong if that's your fancy.)

The surprises came left and right in our tell all expose. My jaw was dropped as I learned the myriad of connections between Frog Fractions, Jamestown, Panzer Dragoon, Chibi Robo, and actual human friendships. There was also a hearty discussion of "gamification" of life, and how XBL achievements can make your life worse. In the end, all I could think was "Marry me, Jim Crawford." And so we did.

Thanks again to Jim for appearing on the show. Tune in this Sunday at 1pm PST/4pm EST when we welcome David Wreden of The Stanley Parable to the program!

You can now browse the PlayStation Store in your browser screenshot

As promised earlier this month, the Sony Entertainment Network online store can now be accessed via the web for those of us living in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. In other words, the PlayStation Store is all up in your browser, offering the functionality one would have expected to see long ago. Take a look for yourself at the new site.

While I don't particularly mind the current PlayStation 3 store interface, this web-based solution looks to a significant step up from a discoverability standpoint. Based on the few minutes I've just spent looking at games I so don't need to buy, it also seems quicker to load.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD confirmed by voice actor?

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 10:15 AM PST

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD confirmed by voice actor? screenshot

Today it looks like the localization for Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix was leaked there by actor Jesse McCartney. Maybe. Don't get too excited yet.

McCartney plays Roxas in the localized KH games, and today he dropped an image on Instagram that looks a lot like some voice work being done on a series game. Attached was this message:

For all you "Kingdom Hearts" Fans. Recording the next chapter! #KingdomHearts #Roxas #Gamers

The cutscene in the booth certainly looks HD-ized, though I can't tell which game it's from. Too bad we can't read the text on the script. Sh*tty Instagram filters.

Japan gets theirs in a couple of months. If we're guessing right, maybe ours is coming not too much later. Let's see what Square Enix says about all of this.

Live show: League of Legends with LT3

Live show: League of Legends with LT3 screenshot

[Mash Tactics airs Monday through Friday at 4p.m. Pacific on Dtoid.TV. Watch King Foom play a variety of games, each day with its own theme. With a heavy focus on community and viewer interaction, you can be as much a part of the show as anything else.]

So I hear this League of Legends thing is kind of a big deal. At least that's what the constant massive numbers for anything League on Twitch.TV tell me anyways. While these types of games aren't really my thing, I figured it's about that time to at least try it out this evening on Mash Tactics. Feel free to join me as I play my very first game, and more than likely get my ass shredded by not only the players, but by the community and live crowd as well.

As a special treat, we'll once again be joined by one of the lovely ladies of LT3. This time, it'll be the fun, and slightly off the wall, ZomgACrayon, who is known around her community for her League of Legends skills, as well as her skills in trolling. I've already planned on her carrying me through this tonight, lets cross our fingers that it all works out.
