NFL’s new digital ticket system tries to cut out scalpers

Posted: 19 Oct 2017 01:43 AM PDT

While there has been a fair amount of technical progress in concert and show tickets, sports tickets haven't quite made that leap yet: they're still either partly analog (read: old-school paper) or tend to be limited to a narrow group of sellers. NFL…

India is quietly preparing a new battle unit to fight a new enemy

Posted: 19 Oct 2017 01:24 AM PDT

Recently, Pakistani hackers compromised 10 Indian websites which included National Aeronautics, Army Institute of Management and Technology, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Army Institute of Management, and the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences. The hacker group — Pakistan Haxor Crew — claimed the action was to avenge the defacement of the Pakistan Railways website by an Indian hacker and to show solidarity with Kashmiris. Last year, reports emerged in Australia that the entire design plans that reveal the capability of India’s Scorpene submarine fleet were leaked. The design plans were leaked apparently from French manufacturer DCNS that is the designer of the system. According to reports, more than 22,000 pages of plans had been leaked. An IIT Kanpur study shared with Parliament’s Committee on Finance this year said attacks from the ‘Equation group’ — which a WikiLeaks reports said was a clandestine CIA and NSA programme — infected India’s telecom and military sectors and research institutes. The government is finally reacting to the threat with a plan to create a new tri-service agency for cyber warfare. The Defence Cyber Agency will work in coordination with the National Cyber Security Advisor. It will have more than 1,000 experts who will be distributed into a number of formations of the Army, Navy and IAF. According to reports, the new Defence Cyber Agency will have both offensive and defensive capacity. The Defence Cyber Agency is seen as a precursor of a cyber command. After reports that Russia meddled in the US elections by hacking machines and creating propaganda on the internet and the recent ransomware and other cyber attacks being attributed to North Korea, cyber warfare is gaining importance. According to experts, North Koreans have developed an advanced cyber program that steals hundreds of millions of dollars and can trigger global havoc. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju admitted last month that there was a huge gap in India’s capability and capacity when it came to cyber warfare and it was imperative to narrow down this difference to discourage cyber attackers. China has already developed strong cyber warfare capacity. The next war may well have to be fought on the internet where a country's vital networks and infrastructure would be on target that will create bigger disruption that actual wars. Equally important is cyber propaganda. During the Doklam conflict, China tried its best to unleash cyber propaganda on India and indulged in complex psy-ops. A Defence Cyber Agency could be the first step the government plans to for critical infrastructure and military networks that are increasingly becoming dependent on the Internet, thus increasing vulnerabilities.

Volume growth improved in India after the Goods and Services Tax implementation: Unilever

Posted: 19 Oct 2017 01:24 AM PDT

Consumer goods giant Unilever said it is seeing signs of improvement in India with higher demand-led growth helped by price cuts due to new tax regime. “While conditions in our developed markets remain challenging, we are starting to see signs of improvement in some of our biggest emerging markets including India and China,” said Unilever CEO Paul Polman in a statement after posting a 2.6% underlying sales growth during third quarter. India is the second largest market for Unilever after the US, contributing nearly 9% to its total sales. During quarter ended June, its Indian unit Hindustan Unilever posted a 6% sales growth with flat volume growth due to trade destocking and reduced buying from one of its largest customer — canteen stores department. The maker of Lux soap and Dove shampoo said volume growth improved in India after the Goods and Services Tax implementation. “As expected price growth lowered as the benefits of the tax change were passed on to consumers,” added the statement released Thursday. The company maintained its forecast for full-year underlying sales growth of 3 to 5%. Last quarter, it said tax benefits from the introduction of GST in India will be passed onto consumers with an impact at the global Unilever level of around 28 to 30 basis points on price in the second half. Last month, the company said it had been working in a planned way for long for a smooth transition in GST and has seen that translate into share increases amongst a big part of the business.

Camera trap survey shows presence of snow leopards in Arunachal

Posted: 19 Oct 2017 12:22 AM PDT

A recent study by the World Wildlife Federation-India on snow leopards has yielded photo evidence of the elusive species in Arunachal Pradesh, a state resplendent with biodiversity and yet largely unexplored.

The evidence is particularly significant, given that large natural areas in the state fall under the custodianship of local communities whose support is crucial to protect the species and its habitat. The species was photographed by a camera trap set up at Thembang, a community conserved area in the state. Only a fraction of the snow leopard habitat in the state comes under two protected areas, Dibang Biosphere Reserve and Namdapha National Park.

The presence of the big cat beyond these protected areas highlights the importance of community support for conservation as well as landscape-scale conservation planning. The statewide survey, carried out by WWF-India in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh forest department, was conducted from March 2017, focusing on unexplored areas, a press statement said.

“This, perhaps, is the first time that the presence of snow leopards has been reported through a camera trap photograph from Arunachal Pradesh. The findings of this survey will help develop conservation plans for the iconic species of the region, primarily snow leopards,” said Omkar Singh, PCCF and principal secretary, department of environment and forests, Arunachal Pradesh.

The survey is based on the knowledge of community members and will help understand the current distribution of snow leopards and other large mammals. Researchers, including trained local youth, interviewed herders and former hunters who provided detailed information on snow leopards in the state as well as their prey species. Over 80% of the interviewees confirmed the presence of snow leopards in their area.

The research team deployed camera traps in select areas to document the species and obtained a photograph of a snow leopard in the community conserved area. The survey is significant as it covers one of the 22 priority landscapes of the Global Snow Leopard Ecosystem Protection Programme. Findings of the survey will enable the forest department to develop a snow leopard conservation plan to address increasing threats such as retaliatory killings and climate change-induced impact on the habitat. It will also help plan for infrastructure development.

Rishi Kumar Sharma, senior coordinator, species and landscapes programme, WWF-India, said, “This survey has enhanced our knowledge on the distribution of snow leopards and their prey species for Arunachal Pradesh. It will help in better conservation and management of the species.”

Ravi Singh, secretary general and CEO, WWF-India, said, “Scientific information on the distribution of snow leopards generated through this survey is an encouraging sign. We appreciate the involvement of local communities.”

74-yr-old Pune woman scales Mt Kilimanjaro

Posted: 19 Oct 2017 12:22 AM PDT

In an act of sheer grit and determination, a 74-year-old woman from Pune recently scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, Africas highest peak, reports DHNS from Mumbai.

The founder of Giripremi, a mountaineering institute, Ushaprabha Page was accompanied by her son Navendu and daughter Girija on her expedition to scale the 5,895-metre tall mountain in Tanzania.
Ushaprabha has been an active mountaineer for more than four decades.

“Page has played a vital role in developing mountaineering in Maharashtra. Her family has accompanied her to scale several peaks, and Kilimanjaro is among them,” a Giripremi spokesperson said.

People from all over the state have showered praises on Ushaprabha for successfully scaling a difficult peak at 74.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano and its top is covered with snow.
