Expects to be paid full amount for the remaining lease with TTSL: AMT Posted: 10 Oct 2017 01:54 AM PDT MUMBAI: Telecom tower company American Tower Corporation (AMT) has said it expects to be paid full amount for the remaining over six years of its lease with Tata Teleservices (TTSL) in case Tata group company decides to fold its wireless business. "American Tower expects to fully enforce the average non-cancelable remaining contract terms on the leases with Tata Teleservices as well as the other contractual provisions included in the Viom transaction," said the US-based firm in a release on October 9. As of September end of this year, the average remaining non-cancellable contract term with Tata Teleservices was in excess of 6 years, said the US based telecom tower company. According to a Goldman Sachs report, this is atypical for tower leases in India, where tenants are mostly allowed to cancel contracts early in exchange for a termination payment. The analysts of the brokerage firm added that TTSL was the anchor tenant in the Viom portfolio when AMT acquired its controlling stake from an investor group that included Tata, which may have resulted in a more customised contract structure. In 2015, AMT bought 51% controlling stake in Indian mobile operator Viom Networks for Rs 7600 crore to expand in the one of the largest telecom markets. While AMT holds a 51% controlling interest in Viom, Tata Teleservices and Tata Sons hold approximately 33 % and 2% minority interests, respectively. The teleocm unit of Tata Sons contributed 5% of American Tower's consolidated property revenues and accounted for approximately $40 million in gross margin for the quarter ended June 30, 2017. TTSL is expected to down its shutters in the next few months and senior officials from the parent group and the telco have approached the government on the same.
Rs 35,999 Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 to heat up premium segment in India Posted: 10 Oct 2017 01:54 AM PDT NEW DELHI: Calling it an amalgamation of art and technology, Xiaomi India on Tuesday launched Mi Mix 2 that will compete with Apple, Samsung and others in the premium segment smartphone category. Xiaomi, which is one of the most trusted brand in the country in the mid-segment smartphone market, said the device, priced at Rs 35,999, will be available at Flipkart and Mi.com from the first week of November. Manu Jain, Global Vice President of Xiaomi and Managing Director of Xiaomi India, told reporters here that the company will organise the first preview sale on October 17 at noon. “Mi Mix 2, that was launched in China on September 11, sold its first batch in flat 58 seconds,” said Jai Mani, Lead Product Manager at Xiaomi India. The device has 5.99-inch, full-screen, edge-to-edge display with 18:9 ratio for better visual experience, hidden custom-designed earpiece and ultrasonic proximity sensor. The chin size is also reduced considerably by Chip-on-film technology and also decreased the discreet front camera module when compared with the regular module used in smartphones. The device has Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC processor, Adreno 540 GPU for gaming, 6GB RAM and 128GB on board memory and 3,400mAh battery. Mi MIX 2 comes with dual-SIM connectivity and USB Type-C for charging and data sharing. “Mi Mix 2 brings Xiaomi into a new price segment in India and will compete with Samsung, Apple, Nokia, Oneplus and Oppo. The entry will make the premium segment even more competitive,” Tarun Pathak, Senior Analyst, Mobile Devices and Ecosystems at New Delhi-based Counterpoint Research, told IANS. The device houses 12MP rear camera with dual flash and four-axis Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) to reduce jerks while shooting a video when the camera is in motion, and houses Sony IMX386 sensor. The device with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 for protection has 43 connectivity band support that can work in 226 regions globally, the company said. –IANS sku/na/dg

Modi govt was already working on the ‘Nudge’ that won Thaler a Nobel Posted: 10 Oct 2017 01:04 AM PDT Much before US economist Richard Thaler won Nobel prize for economics, the Narendra Modi government had put his famous theory in practice by dedicating a separate unit to it. Thaler popularised the idea of ‘nudge economics’, which emphasises subtly guiding humans toward beneficial behaviours without forcing them to comply. Thaler’s theory was one valuable addition to the field of behavioural economics. Last year, the government’s think tank NITI Aayog tied up with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to set up a ‘nudge unit’ that would work towards bringing about behavioural changes and recommending policy corrections to help make the programmes more effective. The unit aimed at sensitising people at the grassroots towards the government’s flagship programmes such as Swachh Bharat, Jan Dhan Yojana, Digital India and Skill Development through social messaging and new ad campaigns. The idea struck NITI Aayog when several ministries approached it with problems related to implementation of key schemes in the government’s priority areas. The unit was set up to recommend changes in advertising, financial outflow and other softer elements related to the success of the programmes. India had taken a leaf out of Britain’s book. Officially known as the Behavioural Insights Team, the unit was first set up in the UK in 2010 in the Prime Minister’s Office to apply nudge theory to try to improve government policy and services while minimising expenditure. The concept has now expanded to the United States and even Australia.
Are you a senior-level employee in an IT company? Get ready for tough days ahead Posted: 10 Oct 2017 01:04 AM PDT Recently, about 400 senior executives of Cognizant accepted the company’s voluntary separation package. Cognizant had announced this programme for directors, associate VPs and senior VPs a few months ago. French IT services major Capgemini had reportedly asked over 35 VP, SVPs, directors and senior directors to leave in February. According to sources, nearly 1,000 Infosys employees at job level 6 and above (group project managers, project managers, senior architects and higher levels) are expected to be asked to leave. Large IT services companies are all in the process of laying off employees on a scale not seen since the 2008-10 downturn. Those taking the hit first are mid- and senior-level professionals — those with 10-20 years of experience. Layoffs in the senior slab in the tech sector have been predicted by the Experis IT Employment Outlook Survey from Experis IT-ManpowerGroup India for October 2017-March 2018. The survey found very little demand for senior-level IT executives among employers. In the survey, merely 3% of employers wanted to hire people at the senior level. The highest demand was seen for candidates in the 0-5 experience slab, with nearly 56% of the 500 employers surveyed displaying an intention to hire people in this group. Another 41% wanted to hire those at the middle level (5-10 years). A major reason for layoffs at the senior level could filling up of vacancies internally rather than going for external recruitment. Another reason is automation taking away traditional team lead jobs becoming redundant. For example, project leaders are increasingly being rendered superfluous as automation kicks in big-time and newer, more specialised roles emerge in India’s $160-billion IT industry. Peter Bendor Samuel, CEO of IT consulting firm Everest Group, said industry growth has slowed and the ‘arbitrage first’ segment (traditional IT services) is in secular decline. “When this is added to the pyramid factory model, which requires new freshers to be brought in every year to keep cost low, it results in an excess of more experienced employees,” he said in an interview to ET in May.
| IIT Kharagpur partners with Samsung for Digital Academy Posted: 10 Oct 2017 01:04 AM PDT Kolkata, Oct 10 () IIT-Kharagpur has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung India for the setting up of a digital academy on the institute’s campus. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the institute would host the Samsung Innovation Lab and train students on the Internet of Things (IoT) through Tizen-based operating systems, commonly used by the company for its mobile phones and home appliances. IoT is a network of computing devices embedded in objects of everyday use for storage and exchange of information. The training would help students acquire industry-relevant skills and “become job ready”, an IIT-KGP statement said today. The academy was a part of the company’s corporate social initiative that aims at bridging the digital divide in the country by imparting skills to students on cutting-edge technology, the statement said. Through this partnership with IIT-KGP, the academy planned to train over 100 students in the next three years, it added. After signing the MoU yesterday, the managing director of Samsung Research & Development Institute, Delhi, YoungKi Byun, said, “Samsung is happy to partner with IIT-Kharagpur to help students leverage the growing digital technology market, especially Internet of things (IoT), the future of connectivity”. The company was committed to work in the field of next-generation technology development, he said. Echoing similar sentiments, IIT-KGP Director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti said, “The partnership will help our students in developing their skills on the emerging areas of IoT and Artificial Intelligence.” The curriculum at the Samsung Digital Academy included the basics of web application development on Tizen, app testing and debugging. The course would be taught over 14 weeks through classroom lectures, assignments, lab room sessions, self-study and mini projects. “This (IoT) lab will enable our students to have hands-on experience with the Tizen operating system as well as facilitate research and app development on IoT platforms,” the head of the department of Computer Science and Engineering, Sudeshna Sarkar, said. | UK university launches language course for India’s future engineers Posted: 10 Oct 2017 01:04 AM PDT LONDON: The University of Birmingham is starting a new three-week online free training for engineering students across India that will help them improve their technical English language skills. Birmingham’s new MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is based on real first-year modules at the University, the university said in a release yesterday. The University’s Electrical Engineering: Sensing, Powering and Controlling course aims to support students for whom English is a second language in mastering many of the key terms and concepts in Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering. The MOOC is aimed at direct entry students planning to attend Birmingham to study in the discipline of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering, but the content is helpful to any student planning to start in the first year of any engineering discipline. The three-week course runs from November 13 and has been developed by the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. It is led by Tim Jackson, Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering. “This is a great opportunity for students whose first language is not English to brush up their language skills and get to grips with the key terms and concepts associated with engineering. The course will be delivered in English to help students to gradually develop their language skills,” Jackson said. |
Government weighing up Apples’s proposal to set up manufacturing unit in India Posted: 10 Oct 2017 01:04 AM PDT NEW DELHI: The government is considering iPhone maker Apple’s proposal for setting up manufacturing unit in India, Union Minister Alphons Kannanthanam said today. Cupertino-based iPhone and iPad manufacturer Apple has sought certain concessions for setting up manufacturing unit in the country. “We would like Apple to come in India (for setting up manufacturing unit) and we are examining Apple’s proposal,” said the Minister of State for Electronics and IT on the sidelines of an event organised by industry body CII. The company had sought concessions, including duty exemption on manufacturing and repair units, components, capital equipment and consumables for smartphone manufacturing and service/repair for a period of 15 years. The technology major had also asked for relaxation in the mandated 30 per cent local sourcing of components besides reduction in custom duties on completely-knocked-down and semi-knocked-down units of devices that are to be assembled in the country. Apple is eyeing India as it is the fastest growing smartphone market in the world. The company is looking to set up a local manufacturing unit in India to cut costs. Apple, however, does not manufacture devices on its own but gets the job done through contract manufacturers. It sells its products through company-owned retail stores in countries like China, Germany, the US, the UK and France, among others. It has no wholly-owned store in India and sells its products through distributors such as Redington and Ingram Micro. About 90 phone companies are currently manufacturing handsets in the country. In March, the then Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had informed Rajya Sabha that the government has not accepted ‘most of the demands’ of Apple which wants to set up manufacturing unit in India.
