| 22 killed in stampede at Elphinstone railway station in Mumbai Posted: 29 Sep 2017 02:00 AM PDT At least 22 persons were killed and 30 plus others were injured following a stampede at the foot-over bridge at Elphinstone Road that connects the Western Railway to Parel on Central Railway on Friday. The injured persons have been rushed to the nearby King Edward Memorial Hospital at Parel. “My deepest condolences to all those who have lost their lives due to stampede in Mumbai. Prayers with those who are injured,” prime minister Narendra Modi tweeted. The incident took place around 1015 hrs in the morning. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is in flight on way to Mumbai, where he was to dedicate 100 new suburban stations on the CR and WR route in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region coinciding with the Navratri-Dassera festivities. The function is likely to be accident. “It is a very unfortunate incident,” said Mumbai mayor Prof Vishwanath Mahadeshwar after visiting the Parel railway station. So far 27 persons have died, the Disaster Management Unit (DMU) of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), said quoting Dr Pravin Bangar, the senior medical officer of KEM Hospital. Top officials of the Western Railway, Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) have rushed to the spot to carry out investigations and rescue and relief work. What triggered the stampede is not yet known, however, this morning Mumbai suddenly received heavy rains. “Since there were rains lot of people took the foot-over bridge and it was completely packed,” said an eye-witness, who stays in the nearby area. Smartphone footage of the bridge showed that the bridge was packed with people and even some were seen clinging down of the railings and jumped down to safety. The injured persons received fracture injuries, doctors in the hospital said. “The bridge has not collapsed,” said additional division fire officer S Rane said. Source: DH |

| Oriental Bank of Commerce lowers base rate 9.45% Posted: 29 Sep 2017 01:41 AM PDT New Delhi, Sep 29 () Public lender Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) today announced a reduction of 0.05 per cent in its base rate, or minimum lending rate, to 9.45 per cent with effect from October 3. “This is to inform that the bank has revised the base rate from 9.50 per cent per annum to 9.45 per cent per annum with effect from 03.10.2017,” Oriental Bank of Commerce said in a regulatory filing. The stock was trading at Rs 120.50 on the BSE today, up 0.54 per cent from its previous close. |
| Internet penetration in rural India abysmal: Report Posted: 29 Sep 2017 01:41 AM PDT NEW DELHI: While the overall Internet penetration in India is 33 per cent, it is only 16 per cent in the rural areas, a report released at the ‘India Mobile Congress 2017′ here said on Friday. According to the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) IMC-Deloitte report, India currently ranks 36th, globally, in Internet inclusion based on availability, affordability, relevance and readiness. India lags behind many countries in broadband penetration with only 23 per cent, which comes to around 310 million subscribers as of August, 2017. The rise in broadband penetration, which is considered a key element in achieving a country’s socio-economic objectives, to 60 per cent could translate into a 5-6 per cent increase in the GDP. “The telecom industry is contributing significantly to the Indian economy. The industry has ensured that the government’s Digital India programme reaches the farthest corners of the country,” said Rajan S Mathews, Director General, COAI. “With the lowest call rates in the world and affordable access to data the industry truly is at the cusp of revolution,” he added. Some of the key recommendations in the report for building connectivity-infrastructure for billions included ‘setting aspirational goals’, ‘increasing planned budgetary allocation and effective usage of Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF)’, ‘implementing policies and guidelines to standardise deployment of infrastructure’. The report also noted Net Neutrality as a continuous area of debate. It also underlined the need to define the regulatory guidelines towards new emerging technologies which are giving rise to new use cases. “Telecom is redefining mobility, work, governance, etc. and will promote geographical, financial and social inclusion and enable the interplay of technologies and industries for exponential growth propelling India towards a $5 trillion economy,” added PN Sudarshan, Partner, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India LLP. The report also addressed the need and implementation status of smart cities, smart healthcare, smart money, smart energy and smart agriculture. |

| Maharashtra govt announces ex-gratia of 5 lakh Posted: 29 Sep 2017 01:35 AM PDT The Maharashtra government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to the next of kin of those who died in the stampede at the Elphinstone Road suburban station. Education minister Vinod Tawde said that Maharahstra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was on an official visit to Singapore, has been briefed on the incident and the rescue and relief measures. He also said that an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh has been announced for the next of kin of the deceased. Those injured would be given free medical treatment. “If someone is needed to be shifted to private hospital, the government would bear the medical expenses,” he said. Source: DH |
