Ubisoft is testing the Nintendo Switch waters with Rayman, Just Dance, and Steep Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:54 PM PST Ubisoft recently announced plans to port Rayman Legends, Steep, and Just Dance 2017 to the Nintendo Switch. Apparently, this version of Rayman Legends will be launching as the "Rayman Legends Definitive Edition," and it will be different from the version of Rayman Legends you can buy right now for reasons that have not yet been explained to me. Also, Nintendo Switch owners will be able to play the "exclusive" song "How Deep is Your Love" by Calvin Harris via something called Just Dance Unlimited. The Internet tells me this is a paid service not dissimilar to Guitar Hero Live's party pass, where players can pay a flat fee and gain access to all kinds of music. So Nintendo Switch owners have the privilege of paying for Just Dance Unlimited, and then they can dance to an exclusive song. In fairness, Switch players will have "three months of free access to Just Dance Unlimited," but also I'm just now being told "How Deep is Your Love" will be a timed exclusive, and will be available on all platforms "later this year." Great. You can use Joy-Cons to dance along with the Just Dance mobile app, in case you were worried about that. |
Breath of the Wild is getting two collector's editions in North America Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:46 PM PST Despite the popularity of the Zelda series, North America has never really gotten a collector's edition for any of the games. Wind Waker HD and Majora's Mask 3D did get small bonuses in the form of cheap figurines, but it looks like Nintendo is finally going to give us the proper collector's treatment with the "Special" edition and "Master" edition. The only difference between these two versions is that the "Master" version comes with a statue of the Master sword. Otherwise, you'll be snagging a soundtrack, a carrying case for the console, a weather worn map, a coin, and a special game case. I can't imagine this would retail for under $100 USD, but there aren't any other details apart from confirmation of this package. There is also no mention of any other regions getting this, but since the Switch is region free, this won't be as big of an issue as previously. While I'm not entirely sure I want a Switch, I am a huge Zelda fan, so I'm probably going to end up with this version well before I actually get the console. Such is the life of a die-hard fan who should probably spend his money on wiser things. Then again, if Nintendo screws the pooch like with the Hyrule Warriors collector's edition nonsense, then maybe I won't be spending money on this. |
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe hits Nintendo Switch this April Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:43 PM PST The Nintendo Switch presentation might be over, but news is still seeping out. As heavily rumored leading up to tonight's event, the system will have its own Mario Kart title. A familiar one, at that. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the "definitive version" of the well-liked Wii U game with the DLC packed in and added features. It won't be out in time for launch, but the wait for April 28 won't be too bad. Expect characters like Splatoon's Inkling Boy and Girl, King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr., plus new and returning tracks (Luigi's Mansion from Double Dash!! and Battle Course 1 from Super Mario Kart), the ability to carry two items (such as the robbing Boo and the high-jump-enabling Feather), eight-person local multiplayer, and a "revamped" Battle Mode with Balloon Battle and Bob-omb Blast. If we can agree on one thing, it's this: the music in Mario Kart 8 is not messing around. |
Nintendo Switch peripherals priced, Pro Controller costs $70 Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:27 PM PST Nintendo has just posted pricing information for their Switch peripherals. Of note is the Pro Controller, set for a MSRP of $69.99, while a pair of Joy-Cons will cost $79.99. The Pro Controller has motion controls and amiibo support, along with "HD Rumble," whatever that actually means. Joy-Con packs are available in grey, red, blue, and blue/red. If you want a single Joy-Con for any reason, you can buy a single grey controller for $49.99. The Joy-Con charging grip will run you $29.99, and the now-standard wheel controllers cost $14.99 for a set of two. Curiously, you will also be able to purchase an extra Nintendo Switch docking station (and accompanying HDMI cable and A/C adapter), allowing you to, say, bring your Switch from the bedroom to your living room. The official Nintendo site makes no mention of a pack-in option for the system, leading me to believe interested players will have to make a day-one software purchase if they actually want something to play on their new Switch. What's included, options, bundles [Nintendo] |
Breath of the Wild is a confirmed launch title for the Switch Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:06 PM PST While the President of Nintendo was reluctant is actually say it, the trailer shown at the end of the Switch presentation confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be a launch title for the Nintendo Switch. This doesn't necessarily mean the Wii U port will be launching at the same date, but I think Nintendo would be unwise to make the same mistake they did with Twilight Princess on GameCube and Wii. Along with a ridiculously epic trailer comes another small confirmation; this Zelda title will actually have voice acting. Link didn't utter a word, but every other character, including the Princess herself, spoke. It looks like they won't be going with a made up language, either. In all honesty, I'm down for that. I've been a bit reluctant to have voice acting in a Zelda title, but having them emote more and act melodramatic just looks too good. This is like some Yakuza style drama going on and I'm down to see the plot of Breath of the Wild play out. |
Here's everything you get when you buy a Nintendo Switch Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:03 PM PST If Nintendo's unveiling event for their new console has convinced you that you gotta get your meat mitts on one o' them Switches, you might be wondering what all you get for your $300. Here's what's inside: The console itself, a Switch Dock for when you want to play on your television, a Left and Right Joy-Con, wrist straps for both, an HDMI cable, and an AC adapter. There are two different bundles at the same $300 price point. One has a neon blue Left Joy-Con, and a neon red Right Joy-Con, and the console itself is gray. The other has gray Joy-Cons as well as a gray console. Are you guys gonna try to be colorful or stick to the monochromatic scheme? |
Travis Touchdown is coming to Nintendo Switch Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:02 PM PST Suda51 got up on stage at the Nintendo Switch event and talked for a while without saying a whole lot. He hears the Switch is easy for independent developers to makes games for. He's currently working on a game that will have Travis Touchdown in it, but it didn't sound like it was another No More Heroes. The only detail given past the concept art of Travis is that this unknown game is "heavily influenced by pro wrestling." No word if Travis Touchdown's beam katana will be in it, but that'd one way to get me to watch pro wrestling. |
Project: Octopath Traveler is a new RPG by Square Enix for the Switch Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:58 PM PST Square Enix has unveiled a new JRPG for Nintendo's new Switch console. Project: Octopath Traveler appears to combine traditional sprite-based artwork with three-dimensional backdrops and environments. Square Enix's trailer for it also appears to show that the game will feature a turn-based combat system. It's very likely that this game is fairly early on in development, as there's not much else that's been confirmed about the game. There's also no confirmed release date at this point in time. |
Dragon Quest Heroes 1 and 2 are coming to Nintendo Switch Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:51 PM PST Nintendo's talking third-party partners for Switch games, and it mentioned that there are over 80 titles in development right now. Take a look at all these names: |
The next Shin Megami Tensei will be on Nintendo Switch Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:48 PM PST As the 25th anniversary for Shin Megami Tensei looms, Atlus teased a new entry at the Nintendo Switch event. Little was shown, because "development has only just begun," but there you go. A new SMT game, and it's gonna be on Switch. Good enough for now! |
Super Mario Odyssey takes Mario to some weirdly mundane places Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:45 PM PST Mario has been to such strange and fantastic places over his lifetime, it's ironically strange to see him hopping around a regular-ass city. At the very least, his hopping is augmented by his new physics-defying hat. He can throw it and jump off it in mid-air. Oh, and the hat has googly eyes. (Taking a page out of 1998 Rare's book?) There are some appropriately wacky places for Mario in Super Mario Odyssey too. The brief trailer shown at today's Switch event showed off a sherbet-colored world, an area with larger-than-life foodstuffs, and a place where Peach and Bowser have some sort of stage show playing. It might be called New Donk City, which is amazing. Super Mario Odyssey is currently scheduled to release this holiday season. |
Xenoblade 2 is coming to the Switch Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:43 PM PST Monolith Soft is bringing the next installment in the Xenoblade series to the Nintendo Switch. There's no release date as of yet, but it sure looks purdy, and I always love a JRPG on a new console. Oh, and Yasunori Mitsuda is behind the music, so get ready to feel alternatively rockin' and sad in your heart. |
Koei Tecmo is doing a Fire Emblem Warriors game Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:40 PM PST Not much was shown apart from a quick teaser, but Koei Tecmo is going to be making a Fire Emblem themed Warriors game for the Nintendo Switch. Seeing as Hyrule Warriors was incredible, I have no doubt this game is going to be just as awesome. Fire Emblem has all the proper makings of a great Warriors title, what with an eclectic cast of characters and plenty of fantastic weaponry. |
Splatoon 2 will be coming to the Switch this Summer Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:37 PM PST So, it turns out that the upcoming Splatoon title for the Nintendo Switch will, in fact, be a sequel and not a straight port of the original Wii U game. This sequel will feature new weapons, forms of movement, maps, and even newer varieties of playable squid. Splatoon 2 will be compatible with both the Joy-Con controllers and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Much like in the first game, gyro aiming will also be incorporated as an optional control mode. Alongside that, it will be possible to play Splatoon 2's multiplayer both online and in a local environment. No official launch date for the game has been announced, although Nintendo has stated that it should be on store shelves this Summer. I do have to admit that it's a bit of a wasted opportunity not to call this game 'Spla2n,' of course. |
Nintendo unveils fighting sports game Arms Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:32 PM PST During the Nintendo Switch presentation, we got a glimpse at a new property called Arms. Yep, just Arms. It's a "fighting sports game" in which players duke it out with their extendable arms. The feel of the game was described as a mix of boxing and shooting (in that aim is involved). You'll hold a Joy-Con in each hand, and when you punch in real life, your character will mimic you. You can even alter the trajectory of punches by curving your wrists, or dodge by tilting the controllers. We saw a bunch of characters of various form factors, including "Spring Man" and "Ribbon Girl," as well as a multitude of moves like dashes, blocks, and uppercuts. There's some depth here. Arms is coming to Nintendo Switch in spring 2017 and it'll support online and local multiplayer. |
Let's take a moment to fully appreciate this Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:28 PM PST Nintendo's Switch presentation is moving at a million miles per hour. For a company that seemed to draw out every morsel of information over the past two years, this show is full speed ahead, telling us something new every second. It's a lot to take in. That's why I'm concerned that this moment will go overlooked. It's just so magical. Savor it. |
1-2-Switch is the first game announced at Nintendo's Switch event Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:24 PM PST The first game Nintendo showed off during the Switch event wasn't one where you look at a television. Instead, it's focused on personal interaction, and reading the people around you. It's called 1-2-Switch, and Nintendo wants to position it as a party game. You know, kind of the way Wii Sports dominated so many social gatherings a decade ago. The main variation of 1-2-Switch that we saw was a cowboy quickdraw mode. Basically, try to "shoot" your opponent as quickly as possible in a family friendly way. This one's a real reflex tester. There seems to be plenty more to 1-2-Switch, though. That will surely be detailed in the near future. 1-2-Switch releases alongside the Switch on March 3. |
The Nintendo Switch Joy-Con has a capture button, but it only does screenshots right now Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:24 PM PST The rumored Share button for the Nintendo Switch is real after all. Soon you'll be able to pester all of your friends with game screenshots and send them out with social media. Video capture will be possible some time in "the future." Also. inside each Joy-Con is also an accelerometer and gyro sensor allowing for independent motion control. I can't wait to see how that'll translate to recorded segments that y'all can send to your friends. |
Nintendo Switch battery life runs between 2.5 and 6.5 hours Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:17 PM PST With a console that can be taken on the go (or a handheld that can be set up on a TV), battery life is going to be an important consideration. In today's Switch presentation, Nintendo reported its battery life to run anywhere between 2.5 and 6.5 hours. That's a pretty big time window, and it's a function of how complex the chosen software is. So for those long flights across country, it would probably be wiser to go with a hypothetical Picross title over, say, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The Switch battery can be charged while playing. |
The Switch Joy-Cons will come in multiple colors Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:14 PM PST It looks like we won't need to be waiting for additional Joy-Con colors for the launch of the Nintendo Switch. Shown off during the Switch presentation were an almost neon red and blue color scheme for the Joy-Con controllers, along with some funky wrist straps. Seeing as how the Joy-Con has motion controls built-in, I guess Nintendo is just covering themselves from another Wii mishap style injury lawsuit. Those damn things are so small, so I wouldn't imagine you'd do much damage with them. |
The Nintendo Switch won't be region locked Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:12 PM PST Back in October, when Nintendo first announced its upcoming Switch console, I couldn't help but feel a bit concerned about the prospect of the hardware manufacturer implementing a form of region-restrictions that may impede on a user's ability to utilise the hardware in a way that best suits them. In fact, I even went so far as to write an opinion piece about why I felt that Nintendo potentially implementing such a feature on the Switch would be a terrible idea. Well, it turns out that Nintendo has listened to much of the feedback and criticisms that it has received relating to its use of region restrictions on its past consoles. Yep, that's right. The Nintendo Switch will launch completely devoid of region restrictions. This means that it'll be possible for a console acquired in any region to play any game on the platform, regardless of the hardware or software's point of origin. If I may editorialise for a moment; Hell. Yes. This is precisely the news I wanted to hear. |
Nintendo Switch will have a paid online service Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:09 PM PST Right out of the gate, Nintendo spoke briefly about online play on the Nintendo Switch during its presentation this evening. While specifics were sparse, there's one big detail: a price tag. Players will be able to engage in online multiplayer, invite friends, chat, and set play appointments in compatible Switch games using an application on their smart device. Following Sony and Microsoft, the Switch's online will be a paid service, beginning in the fall of 2017, but users will be able to try it for free in a trial period after launch on March 3, 2017. More details at a later date. |
Nintendo Switch releases on March 3 for $300 Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:08 PM PST We finally know. Nintendo kicked off the Switch event by answering the biggest remaining question marks: When it comes out and how much it costs. Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima revealed that the Switch releases on March 3, 2017 at a price of $300. That date applies to the United States, Japan, major countries in Europe, Canada, Hong Kong, and "other territories." The price in Japan is 29,980 yen; Kimishima told European audiences to check with their local retailers. There you have it, folks. Three c-notes and it's less than two months away. |
Watch the Nintendo Switch event here Posted: 12 Jan 2017 01:40 PM PST It's the night we've been waiting for since October, and in less than half an hour, Nintendo is finally going to let us know more about its next system. Tonight's Nintendo Direct should cover things like the price, launch date, and possibly even specifications and features of the new console. We'll have live coverage of all the news that comes from the event, but if you'd like to follow along with us, you can watch the stream directly below. While you're watching, why not see if you can get a Bingo? |
After quite the wait, toddlers are now in The Sims 4 Posted: 12 Jan 2017 12:00 PM PST The impossible has happened: toddlers are now in The Sims 4 by way of a free update. I'm an on-again, off-again Sims player at best, so my reaction here is a general "Aww, that's cute. Look at those lil outfits!" But the folks who are in for the long hall and have been waiting years for this moment? The ones who had reasonably given up hope? They're freaking the hell out. "We just had to find the right time, resources, and design to allow us to start the heavy process of actually building and bringing Toddlers to life," wrote the developers. "And believe me when I say it has been really REALLY difficult to not talk about this as we worked to get it right." |
WWE 2K17 hits PC on February 7 Posted: 12 Jan 2017 11:00 AM PST All you PC fans out there waiting for your wrestling fix will be happy to know that WWE 2K17 is heading to the platform on February 7, 2017. While you'll receive the pre-order bonus of Goldberg for free, there is still going to be a season pass to rip you off. Oddly enough, all released content will be included, but future stuff is being locked away behind the season pass. Way to make this release confusing as hell, 2K! WWE 2K17 may not be the best game around, but a PC port could fix a lot of the major issues. For one, you'd be able to mod the hell out of the game, possibly bringing back Hulk Hogan and including oft-forgotten wrestlers. You could also run the game at a normal framerate, since the console versions play like trash. Then there is the ability to grab this on a Steam sale, reducing the price to a point where you won't feel the sting of regret from your decisions. WWE 2K17 Coming To PC February 7 [2K] |
DiRT Showdown is free over on the Humble Store right now! Posted: 12 Jan 2017 10:30 AM PST The overlooked DiRT Showdown is now free on the Humble Store for the next two days. While the game isn't exactly groundbreaking or packed with loads of content, it does basically replicate the style of Burnout while providing some neat diversions in the form of an open-ended, goal-oriented Tony Hawk-style side mode. I love "Joyride" and all of those random objectives, even if Codemasters copy and pasted one entire area from Dirt 3 into Showdown. If this trend keeps going, the entire Codemasters racing catalog is going to end up free for everyone. I doubt you'll find many people complaining, as the studio has been putting out quality racing titles for quite awhile now. Well, most of them are; Grid 2 can go rot. |
Special little places: Over the hill and through the woods Posted: 12 Jan 2017 10:00 AM PST [What can be more homely than going to grandma's house? Gaming in grandma's basement, thanks to last month's bloggers wanted. Don't forget about this month's bloggers wanted prompt too, New Year's evil! ~Strider] Generally, when I think of my happy place I always think of a game. Specifically a Nintendo game. I literally grew up with Nintendo. So much so that my first console outside of it was an Xbox 360. All those fond memories of eating Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas, and opening presents all took place at my grandparent's house. |
Review: AUKEY KM-G3 RGB Mechanical Keyboard Posted: 12 Jan 2017 09:30 AM PST I love mechanical keyboards. I used to think people that raved and ranted about them and spent hundreds of dollars on a basic-looking, loud-as-hell keyboard were stupid idiots -- until I tried one. Now I can never go back. That said, I see why many people just use a plain old boring keyboard because the price of mechanicals can be rather steep for the current economy, especially if you want to get something flashy. Thankfully, there now exists an entry-level mechanical keyboard with decent switches for a budget price, though there are some small caveats. |
DiRT Rally is about to get PlayStation VR and co-driver support Posted: 12 Jan 2017 09:00 AM PST Codemasters is planning an upgrade for DiRT Rally that enables PlayStation VR support as well as a co-driver feature in which a friend can use a second controller to send you calls. Talk about a trust exercise! While this will be sold as DLC, a new retail edition of Rally will have the add-on baked in. It might go without saying, but the VR support extends to "every car, every route, and every discipline." I feel like that's actually worth stressing, though, in the case of game's like TrackMania Turbo which cordon off their VR functionality. That said, this is a paid upgrade, so you'd expect as much. |
Posted: 12 Jan 2017 08:30 AM PST Have you ever fallen head over heals for someone extremely beautiful only to find out that what is at their very core is just not good, and may even be downright bad? It gives me no pleasure to say that is how I feel about Rise & Shine, a side-scrolling shoot-'em-up that is video game referential humor from start to finish and so visually appealing that it's hard to swallow the rest of the game falling short. I had such high hopes for it when I previewed it last year. |
Posted: 12 Jan 2017 08:00 AM PST [With the Nintendo Switch presentation just hours away, sonic429 has ensured that even if all your dreams don't come true, you can at least have some fun! Print out your Bingo board and follow along during the presentation to see if you can predict Nintendo's future! - Wes] With the pending Switch announcement, I thought I would write a blog so we can have a little fun. I’m sure everyone is familiar with the rules of Bingo, but that won’t exactly work in this situation, so I’m giving everyone a single row, column, or diagonal line. I will also do a basic rundown of each block as some of them require a bit of an explanation. |
Resident Evil 7's trying to trick you into its cannibal-filled home Posted: 12 Jan 2017 07:30 AM PST An inviting home is not always a home you want to be invited to. Maybe the design is spot-on -- an open concept and "Live, Laugh, Love" scrawled on the wall -- and that sounds pretty nice. But, the owners of that modern chic house, they want to murder you. No good. This Resident Evil 7 trailer is the worst of both worlds: A family who's probably planning to cannibalize you and outdated decor. Terrifying on all accounts. |
You won't need to go undercover to see this Lego City Undercover trailer Posted: 12 Jan 2017 07:00 AM PST Struggling to come up with a headline, you say? Why, I never! I totally had a pun lined up for this article, but then I realized that the title of Lego City Undercover hasn't changed from the Wii U version, so I had no clue how to word my pun. The trailer on YouTube refers to this as the (2017) version, but there doesn't seem to be much different, apart from a true 1080p resolution. |
Sony closes Rigs and Killzone: Mercenary studio Guerrilla Cambridge Posted: 12 Jan 2017 06:30 AM PST Sony has closed Guerrilla Cambridge, the long-running studio behind games like Rigs: Mechanized Combat League for PlayStation VR, Killzone: Mercenary on PS Vita, and even MediEvil, among others. In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony said the decision stemmed from an internal review of projects under SCE Worldwide Studios, which led the company to believe that it would be "necessary to make some changes to the European studios structure" in order to meet its "strategic objectives." Killzone and Horizon Zero Dawn developer Guerrilla Games, which is based out of Amsterdam, isn't going anywhere. Whether others will be affected -- either now, or in the future -- remains to be seen. "Whilst we accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high calibre staff, by focusing on other Studios with exciting new projects in development, (including continued work on PlayStation VR), we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality to our players," reads a portion of the statement from Sony. Disappointing news, to say the least. Rigs is one of the best, most fully-realized PlayStation VR games, and I had been counting on Cambridge to continue making titles for the device. Welp. Guerrilla Cambridge to close [GamesIndustry.biz] |
Skyrim script extender aims to save mods that broke with the Special Edition Posted: 12 Jan 2017 06:00 AM PST Whenever an update comes along for just about anything on PC, it breaks shit. It can be as minor as a small graphical upgrade for World of Warcraft making certain add-ons obselete, or as big as say, Skyrim: Special Edition completely overhauling the game and making hundreds, if not thousands of mods inoperable. But naturally modders work tirelessly to get their stuff up to date to counter the publisher's code, and that's just what the Script Extender team is doing now. They're aiming for a March release for their new version, which is now being identified as "SKSE64" -- in short, it's a valuable script of sorts that allows other mods to exist by adding more functionality to Skyrim beyond what Bethesda gave us. It's crazy how far mods have come since simple maphacks that I used to work on as a kid, and because of people like this, PC gaming will never die. |
It is a mega day for Xbox One backward compatibility Posted: 12 Jan 2017 05:30 AM PST I guess adding seven games in a single day wasn't enough for Microsoft's backward compatibility service. They needed to round off the number so it wasn't odd and I'm perfectly fine with the choices they made. Mega Man 9, Mega Man 10, and Beat'n Groovy are now accessible on Xbox One for owners of the digital titles. |
Final Fantasy XIV is getting a XV collab, and I hope it involves big jackets Posted: 12 Jan 2017 05:00 AM PST Although people are quick to dump on Lightning, she had a really great collaboration with Final Fantasy XIV this past year, and I'd love to see more limited time crossovers like that without going overboard (generally the team just sticks to light homages like outfits and pets). We're going to see one this year, and it's going to be more than just a costume. Speaking to 4Gamer, the game's producer Yoshi-P noted that they wanted to completely go over things like the cast of XV's "speech patterns, character traits," and so on before they did any sort of event. So until the team actually has a full handle on what XV means to them, the crossover is on hold. It's refreshing to see restraint in at least one arm of Square Enix. Yoshi-P and his entire team have literally resurrected XIV from the dead, and this painstaking attention to detail is part of the reason why it's resonated with its playerbase. Cold Vengeance is a clunky, pitch-perfect action game Posted: 12 Jan 2017 04:00 AM PST I rarely put a game down and immediately start writing about it. I prefer to let my experiences soak in a bit so that my hot takes can marinate into coherent thoughts. Today is different, though because I’ve been binging on Cold Vengeance and it’s rad as hell. The 3D run ‘n’ gun shooter looks like a long lost N64 game, but it just came out yesterday. It’s clunky, all low-poly models and erratic camera angles, but utterly chaotic when it gets moving. In a way, it reminds me of every absurd action movie I’ve ever seen: You run, shoot, and kick everyone’s ass from the second the game starts. And from what I’ve played so far, the action never bothers to slow down. The first few levels feel like an even campier take on Escape From L.A. As Jon Dagger – yeah, that’s the protagonist’s name – you fight through rundown city streets and battle robots, flying Canadian shock troopers, and dudes in leather bondage suits wielding shovels. It's nutty, sure, but Cold Vengeance's over-the-top premise is a big part of what makes it work. |
Rocket League hits one billion games played in just under two years Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:30 AM PST Rocket League references are just about everywhere at this point -- it's creeped its way into pop culture, and isn't going anywhere. And a recent stat from developer Psyonix (which I still confuse with Psygnosis, RIP) backs that up -- since its debut on PC in July of 2015, it has hosted more than one billion games. Other stats include a 25 million playerbase in which 50% of them play competitive modes, with 33% in casual gametypes, 11% in "other" modes, and 6% playing privately. I haven't played in quite a while (unless you count the Overwatch Lucioball homage). |
Posted: 12 Jan 2017 03:00 AM PST I don't have any clever words of wisdom for this week -- there's literally just one game apiece for the Wii U and 3DS. F-Zero X for the former, and Shift DX for the latter. That's it! It's a shame Nintendo hasn't done anything with F-Zero in years. Maybe they're waiting for the Switch to ship tons of units before they unveil some sort of teaser for it -- like they're afraid of putting it out on another doomed console for fear of the series going away forever with a whimper. I don't really know. But Nintendo really has been lacking in its racing department lately, because while Mario Kart 8 was fantastic its battle mode wasn't, and there isn't much else on the horizon. If we could get a Diddy Kong Racing reboot and another F-Zero this gen though? Now we're talking. That's an easy way to settle my New Year's resolution. |
Live action Gravity Rush 2 trailer featuring anti-gravity cat is wild Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:30 AM PST Talk about going out of your way to make something cool to promote your game. SIE Japan released a four minute live action trailer about two Japanese sisters and their pet cat. We view an everyday apartment from the first-person perspective of one of the girls who is writing a report about Newton's Law of Gravity. You know, that one law. Slowly, gravity starts to bend. Obviously referencing the main character of the game, Kat, the trailer dubbed "Gravity Cat" uses the cat to first demonstrate that something is amiss with the gravity. Eventually they are shot out the window and smiling and laughing together, apparently ignorant that they're likely about to die. Oh well, we got a cute cat and we're flying! Hell yeah! This well put-to-together and well acted commercial along with the claymation adverts for Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki are fun and make me want to see more unique trailers. |
We actually have some amiibo news for once Posted: 12 Jan 2017 02:00 AM PST For all five people (four if you don't include myself) who still care about amiibo, there's some actual news this week for the figures. The first bit comes curiously right before the Nintendo Switch presentation (tonight, which we will be covering!), and cites three mysterious new figures by way of CPSIA certifications. One of them seems to be a dual pack, but somehow, all signs point to the announcement of Cloud, Bayonetta, and Corrin along with the rumored Super Smash Bros. Switch port. For those of you who have been waiting to nab the Wolf Link amiibo separately, it's just been verified in Target's system with a placeholder price of $15.99, which seems about right since it's a little bulkier than normal (most amiibo are $12.99 MSRP, outside of a few exceptions like the Monster Hunter ones). The amiibo scene has been really cold for roughly a year now, but if the Switch takes off it might just re-ignite the flames. CPSIA [Nintendo] |
Mighty No. 9 is only tolerable in a single, speedy burst Posted: 12 Jan 2017 01:00 AM PST It’s no surprise that Mighty No. 9, a game full of explosions that look like pizza, is awful. After numerous delays, terrible marketing, and a woefully underwhelming final release, the 2D platformer has become something of the gaming world’s punching bag. But even the worst games deserve attention when it’s for a good cause, which is why you should watch the Mighty No. 9 speedrun from Awesome Games Done Quick 2017. Speedrunner and exceptional color commentator GreenZSaber pulled off an impressive run at the charity gaming marathon. With some solid platforming skills and the help of a convenient glitch that occasionally granted invincibility, GreenZSaber completed Mighty No. 9’s ‘Maniac’ difficulty in just under 47 minutes. |
These Nioh screens are magnificent Posted: 12 Jan 2017 12:00 AM PST Man, Disney World used to have a badass mythology museum in the Japan area of Epcot, which showcased a bunch of creatures like Tengu, Kappa, and Kitsune. Now it's a "Kawaii Museum," which is still neat, but the former was just so wonderfully laid out. It appears as if some of those mythological beings will be making it into Nioh, based on these new screenshots from Tecmo Koei. But most importantly, it seems like there's still going to be a lot of humanoid fights outside of the betas we've gotten, which I really dig. That Tengu on the bridge though? If that's not a bullshot, it looks pretty damn tense. Like a Souls game I don't want anything spoiled before February rolls around, but drops like these are making it tough to not at least look. |
