Harmonix announces bake sale to fund Rock Band PC port (Fauxclusive) Posted: 06 Apr 2016 04:00 PM PDT Following the failure of its well-publicized Fig campaign, developer Harmonix announced today it is not giving up its plan to bring the "popular" Rock Band video game to PC. If crowdfunding won't work, the company says it will turn to a tried-and-true fundraising pastime by holding a bake sale. "We knew the risks of crowdfunding before we launched our campaign, and unfortunately we became part of the growing statistic of projects that don't get funded," explained Harmonix' lead fundraiser Chelsea Baxter. "We still believe in Rock Band on the PC, even if apparently very few of our fans do. That's why we're turning to a more traditional fundraising tactic with this bake sale."
Giveaway: Epistory and Roccat Ryos MK Pro Posted: 06 Apr 2016 03:00 PM PDT The awesome folks at Fishing Cactus and Roccat have been kind enough to set you folks with an awesome giveaway! What can you win? Well the grand prize is a brand new Roccat Ryos MK Pro keyboard and a Steam copy of Epistory. Ten runner ups will also receive a copy of Epistory! Not too shabby eh?
New PS4 update for The Witness might help with motion sickness Posted: 06 Apr 2016 02:00 PM PDT It sure does feel odd to boot up The Witness again. I had intended to continue solving optional puzzles after earning the platinum Trophy, albeit at a much laxer, much more sane pace, but ended up stopping completely. Why go back now? A PlayStation 4 update! And a beefy one at that. The update adds a few new options presumably meant to help quell motion sickness. I've never felt nauseous while playing The Witness, so I can't comment on their effectiveness first-hand. Under the Settings menu, you can now find a toggle for a reticule as well as "vignetting," an effect that essentially darkens the screen around the edges. There's also a field-of-view slider (adjustable from "80" up to "100"), which is something the PC version already received via update. I'm unsure if there are any other less-obvious changes, but that wouldn't surprise me. Jonathan Blow [Twitter]
End of the Mine Kickstarter looks like a creepy good time Posted: 06 Apr 2016 01:30 PM PDT "End of the mine" sounds like something an '80s beefcake action star would say before tossing a vaguely European villain into a mine shaft for trying to steal bearer bonds or something. But, it's actually a new game on Kickstarter. The 2D action-shooter is all about spelunking through creepy alien mines, shooting bizarre enemies, and finding weird items. Normally I don't check out too many Kickstarters. We get emails everyday from different campaigns asking for coverage and trying to pick and choose between them starts to feel a little arbitrary. However, End of the Mine has a special Dtoid connection that made me take a second look -- one of the developers is a long time community member! Old Dtoiders might remember SteezyXL kicking around on the Cblogs and comments. He was always a great guy and I'm happy to see him doing the damn thing and making his own games. Props.
Outland and Gunstar Heroes are worth revisiting on Xbox One Posted: 06 Apr 2016 01:00 PM PDT Have you peeked at your full Xbox One digital game library recently? With all of the backward-compatible titles rolling in, I find myself paralyzed by choice and often end up just playing nothing. I'm hoping to avoid that situation with today's additions: Treasure's fabulous run-and-gun title Gunstar Heroes and Housemarque's action-platformer Outland. The latter deserves a special shout-out. It's a neat twist on the iconic shoot-'em-up Ikaruga with light and dark projectiles that can be avoided by changing your character's state. Not enough people gave it a chance or even knew about it in 2011, though the game has thankfully since come to Steam. Major Nelson [Twitter]
Binding of Isaac updates and a Bumbo tease Posted: 06 Apr 2016 12:30 PM PDT I'm both excited and terrified for Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+. I mean, more Isaac is always a good thing, but I'm STILL trying to collect all of the items and secrets that were included in the vanilla Afterbirth expansion. Creator Edmund McMillen updated the Isaac blog yesterday with some more details on the anticipated/dreaded expansion. There are already 55 new items ready for the expansion, and just like last time, he's also welcoming user submitted ideas. You can add yours to a reddit thread so long as you follow a few general guidelines, namely "be interesting, don't be stupid." Fair enough. Continuing the good news, Afterbirth should be on its way to consoles soon. The game has been submitted and is just waiting for approval. Soon, everyone will share my pain. McMillen ended the post with a cryptic tease of the upcoming Bumbo, an RPG that isn't exactly an RPG. He describes it as “poop based punching sim.” Maybe I'm a broken individual, but that sounds like a pretty good time.
| Telltale teases a 'very different project' over Twitter Posted: 06 Apr 2016 12:00 PM PDT It's hard to keep track of Telltale Games' numerous ongoing projects, much less the unannounced or barely-detailed ones like that mysterious Marvel title, but here's another to keep track of.
Curiously, the studio says this game is in production at "a partner developer." I've seen folks guess The Wolf Among Us Season 2, and I'd be entirely fine with that being the case. It's my favorite Telltale episodic series -- above even The Walking Dead Season 1 -- and I'm down for more twisted fairy tales. Whatever this game is, we should have some answers tomorrow. |
Initiation station: The power of persona Posted: 06 Apr 2016 11:30 AM PDT [This time on the bloggers wanted topic, we stretch the bounds of character creation to its limit for something interestingly personal. Blaze muses about the ultimate character creation: her online persona on Destructoid, through the ups, downs, and reinvention since her former time as KyWii. Crazy right? ~Strider] Who are you? Who, who, who, who??? The fun thing about going online and playing video games, as Pixie pointed out in her call to arms this month, is that we can be anyone we want to be when it comes to character customization. We can be cute, crude, funny, rude, bold, or weak. The possibilities are endless. The concept of fantasy is that we can make a world all our own and live it exactly how we want to. That's what makes fantasy... well... fantasy. While the lines between reality and fantasy can sometimes become blurred and skewered at times, I've always found that going by an online alias was my get away from the real world. You all know me as Blaze now, but many of you once knew me as KyWii as well. Let's talk about that for a bit!
Modders turn basketball stars into sexfully-horrifying cheerleaders Posted: 06 Apr 2016 10:45 AM PDT Even you non-sports-liking heathens have to admit that sports yields some of the best gifs. I mean, there's an entire industry and 24-hour network based around the "highlight," a primordial gif. Plus remember when the Toronto Raptors mascot fell off his roller skates and the lil tail deflated? That's art. So funny things already happen in sports. Sports games, too, always seem to break in hilarious ways because of that harsh snap from reality/immersion to botched simulation. Remember the one foot tall Madden player? And then we add modders into the fray and, well. If I can offer some fun-alysis here (that's analysis on why this is funny, keep up), it goes beyond the "man model mapped to 'feminine' animation" in a way not dissimilar to Ocelot rolling around in the rain as Quiet. The lack of feet and crotch, because it's not necessary to model the bodies beneath the shoe endorsements and jock straps, couple with the negative space corset wraps. The attention to detail in getting the player models to look like their real world counterparts lends weight to the beautifully synchronized routine. Just lovely. Batman and The Thing also show up at one point because modders are so busy wondering whether or not they could, they have never once stopped to ask if they should. And we love them for it.
Dear Esther is calmly walking to PS4, Xbox One Posted: 06 Apr 2016 10:30 AM PDT Before Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, there was Dear Esther, a narration-heavy first-person adventure from The Chinese Room that fueled countless internet arguments about what can and can't fit into the medium. Certain players found it too light on traditional game mechanics and world interaction, but it was decently well-received by critics at the time and, in recent years, these story-driven experiences ("walking simulators," if you must) have become more commonplace. It makes sense, then, that the studio would want to bring Dear Esther to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Curve Digital is handling the new ports, with a release happening this summer. According to The Chinese Room, "The gameplay will remain essentially the same, with a few tweaks and bug fixes, but the most exciting change comes in the form of a brand-new Directors' Commentary, reuniting original developers Jessica Curry, Dan Pinchbeck, and Rob Briscoe to bring you a slew of stories and insights about the influential game's development." Dear Esther is coming to consoles! [The Chinese Room]
Overwatch developers talk about exactly how their netcode works Posted: 06 Apr 2016 10:00 AM PDT I had this explained to me in person while visiting Blizzard's headquarters recently, and it's all fascinating stuff. As a result of all of the conversations having to deal with netcode on the forums and reddit, two Overwatch developers got together and decided to explain the process in detail. And I really mean it -- as the full video below is 17 minutes, breaking down the general concept of how netcode is handled, as well as some insane specifics. They even have little papercraft examples and everything!
| 25 questions on my dresser, yessir, we need your Podtoid questions Posted: 06 Apr 2016 09:45 AM PDT I wasn't even on Podtoid 331: #PleaseBeExcited, but I know it was a rollicking good time, because you guys asked us questions that we then gave snarky/dismissive/thoughtful/funny answers to. It's so fun, guys. Maybe we should've done a call for questions for our Quantum Break Podtoid special, too? Anyways, it's that time of week again, y'all. See something, say something. But don't snitch. Which is our preferred AC/DC singer? Preferred Van Halen singer? Do you wipe sitting down or standing up? What would be your Guantanamo torture band? Why am I asking you all this when you're supposed to be asking us things!? We're recording Podtoid this afternoon. Ask us a fun question here, get it read on the air as I butcher the pronunciation of your username, which exists more as an image in my head than as a spoken word. Shy? | Two strikes and yer out: Ubisoft to start permanently banning Division cheaters Posted: 06 Apr 2016 09:30 AM PDT The Division on PC is about to become a significantly more scrupulous place. Those who can't keep themselves from breaking the rules are about to be ushered out. And the rest of the players can help make it happen. Ubisoft developers Massive Entertainment recently held a stream where some of the finer points of the April 12 patch were discussed. It was there that this new policy came to light. According to community developer Yannick Banchereau, the first offense will be a three-day suspension without warning, and the second offense will be a permanent ban from The Division. "We are not going to pretend that we are 100 percent happy with the situation. It is something we're working on, and we should have some better solutions coming in the future. We are looking at improving it. We are catching a lot of people, so it's not as if there was nothing being done, but of course we can always improve on that," Banchereau commented. Players will soon have a more effective method of reporting cheaters, too. One of the additions in the April 12 update on PC is a "/report [username]" command that automatically flags someone's account for review. Massive says that it'll look into each of those reports. With these strict regulations and some help from the player base, The Division should be in a better state very soon. The message is clear, cheaters: Shape up or get out. | Parkitect nails that classic theme park sim vibe Posted: 06 Apr 2016 09:00 AM PDT To my ridiculous mind, Parkitect sounds like a parakeet mech action figure, but it's actually a theme park simulation game -- one that was cool enough to make it onto Patrick's big list of indie titles to look for in 2016. It's taking a back-to-basics approach, and I love that about it. Parkitect is coming to Steam Early Access on May 5, 2016, which I somehow excitedly read as "April" because I am terrible with dates. Developer Texel Raptor expects it to remain there for a year or more. "We'll do our best to keep this short, but in the long run we do what's best for the game." Folks who have tried Parkitect in its current pre-alpha form should receive the Early Access build via Humble "a few days before the Steam release" in order for Texel Raptor to "iron out any last-minute bugs." If you're thinking of buying in, note that the price will shift from $15 to $17.99 on May 5. Parkitect is Coming to Steam! [Kickstarter] |
Devil May Cry comes to PlayStation Now Posted: 06 Apr 2016 08:30 AM PDT Capcom is adding a few gems into the PlayStation Now collection, including Devil May Cry 4 (not the superior re-release), Devil May Cry HD Collection, Final Fight: Double Impact, and Darkstalkers Resurrection. The much-maligned Dark Void is also hitting the service, though I prefer the amazing retro homage Dark Void Zero. I've been using PlayStation Now for a few months, and much like EA Access, it's not bad at all if you pony up for a limited time and binge the service. Especially since there's more than a few classics on there that everyone should play at some point in their life. PlayStation Now [Sony]
Watch Hyrule Warriors' Medli in action Posted: 06 Apr 2016 08:00 AM PDT Over at WonderCon 2016, Nintendo put on a developer panel to shed some light on Hyrule Warriors Legends, which also came with bonus footage for Medli -- the Wind Waker character that's set to debut in the Warriors series for the first time. You can opt for the full presentation below, or just skip to the 22:00 mark for Medli. For reference, she's part of the confusing Hyrule Warriors DLC schedule, that applies everything for the 3DS edition, but only "some" content on Wii U. Thankfully Medli will be more straightforward, as she will be a free character for all, arriving with Marin and the first add-on pack.
| Remedy has an on-the-nose punishment for Quantum Break pirates Posted: 06 Apr 2016 07:30 AM PDT If pirates are going to act the part, they may as well look the part too. That's apparently a mantra over at Remedy Entertainment. People who are running an unlicensed copy of Quantum Break are finding themselves with a brand new accessory -- one that reminds them of their misdeed. As reported by Eurogamer, Remedy has given Quantum Break protagonist Jack Joyce an eye patch on all illegal versions of the game. However, it may pop up for some people with legitimate copies in the event that they aren't logged into their Microsoft account before loading the game. In that case, just reboot the game -- unless you like the eye patch enough to keep it around, of course. This isn't the first time Remedy has saddled pirates with an eye patch. Alan Wake did the exact same thing. Sounds like that's standard operating procedure for the developer. As far as piracy punishments go, there's a lot worse. | Halo 5 is running a beta for Warzone Firefight next week Posted: 06 Apr 2016 07:00 AM PDT 343 Industries is going to let Halo 5: Guardians players try out the upcoming eight-person cooperative mode Warzone Firefight early with a beta. It's set to run next Thursday, April 14 at 10:00am Pacific until that same time on Monday, April 18, with one map, Escape from A.R.C., available. I liked Firefight in past games, and I'm into Warzone, generally speaking, so it stands to reason that I'd also enjoy Warzone Firefight. It's a five-round mode that will have your team leaning on the REQ System to complete increasingly-tough objectives. You'll take on the "most on-screen enemies in the history of the franchise" and bosses, including a foreboding new Mythic tier. The finished version of Warzone Firefight is going to release this summer, pending the beta goes as planned. In more immediately gratifying news, Halo 5's Ghosts of Meridian update went live today, adding maps for Warzone (Skirmish at Darkstar) and Arena (Tyrant), weapons, vehicles, and a slew of game improvements and bug fixes. Follow that link for the full breakdown, or stick to these highlights: Halo 5 Content, Ghosts of Meridian, Available Today [Xbox] |
You're gonna lose that foot: Here's the Gears of War 4 box art Posted: 06 Apr 2016 06:30 AM PDT Cover art posts are usually boring, but this one's straight-up dangerous. The trench foot is an underrated concern in today's Apple Watch-wearing, Uber-riding society. But, stand in a puddle too long? Lop it off, doc. Those dogs ain't barkin' no more. That's why I'm worried for the protagonists of Gears of War 4. Judging by this box art, there's razor hail falling from the sky and Locusts are probably firing on them. Under those circumstances, it's easy to forget about proper foot care. Here's what you have to do. Find someplace warm and comfortable. Towel off and make sure your feet are dry. Put on some fresh socks and boots. Sip on some hot cocoa. Throw some tiny marshmallows in there. And Kait, get a beanie that covers your ears. You're going to catch a cold! Gears of War 4 release date and cover art revealed - exclusive [Entertainment Weekly]
Overwatch introduces ranked play in latest patch Posted: 06 Apr 2016 06:00 AM PDT Overwatch is constantly adding new features and tweaks to the core game during its beta session, and another big one is coming. Blizzard has just pushed ranked play into the mix, which has its own divisions in tow. Once players are level 25 they can access the mode, and will still get all of the cosmetic rewards they earn in unranked. The below video does a good job of explaining it all. Overwatch is still currently in closed beta, but the open session is coming in early May. I really like it!
Doom's post-launch DLC detailed, includes $40 season pass Posted: 06 Apr 2016 05:30 AM PDT Doom, a game that is five weeks from release, has at least $45 worth of post-launch content planned. Never mind the fact that we don't have any idea if Doom will actually be any good. If you're buyin', they're sellin'. The cart is in front of the horse, Bethesda. In a press release issued this morning, Bethesda outlined its plans for Doom DLC. Three "premium multiplayer packs" will arrive in the months following launch. The first one is scheduled for the summer and includes: three maps, one weapon, one playable demon, one armor set, one piece of equipment, new hack modules and taunts, and new customization colors and patterns. Each multiplayer pack will be $14.99. Predictably, all this DLC comes bundled via a season pass. Hypothetically, anyone can secure the rights to all three multiplayer packs for $40 -- a $5 savings. This is a hypothetical because no one should actually do it. You know better by now. It's not all bad, though. Bethesda also reiterated (it was actually announced in late February) that it's supporting user-created content via SnapMap -- Doom's game and level editor. All of this will be free, and developer id will continually add to the tools that are available to creators. Also, id will release new multiplayer modes for Doom that will be free for all. But, again, we're approaching this all out of order. Doom has to actually be a good game before we concern ourselves with supplemental content. While it's not the final release, we'll get another glimpse at the multiplayer soon enough. Bethesda revealed that an open multiplayer beta will take place from April 15 through April 17 on all platforms. Let's start there and take it one step at a time, okay?
| Sorry love: Super Smash scene in Spain may ban Bayonetta Posted: 06 Apr 2016 05:00 AM PDT Even with her very small nerf in the recent balance patch, most Super Smash Bros. players agree that Bayonetta is at least formidable. Now, a community in Spain is looking to ban her outright from upcoming tournaments. A top player, Greward, notes that of over 400 in the community, only three actually main Bayonetta, and two of them agree she should be banned. He says that if she is allowed, since just 7% of those polled want her in, some folks would drop out of the scene "and the game," which he doesn't want. According to him, "no other character is banned in Spain or has ever been in the history of Smash." Well, that's a pretty damning speech! I wonder if this will spur Nintendo into action to curb her abilities a tad more? Far be it from me to speak on the pro scene, but I think there's plenty of other viable picks that can counter her. | Way to rub it in that Konami isn't as good as it once was, Mondo Posted: 06 Apr 2016 04:30 AM PDT Much like Capcom and Mega Man, Konami seems keen on strutting out the shambling corpses of Castlevania and Silent Hill (and now, Metal Gear) for merchandising purposes -- canceling actual gaming related projects along the way. Mondo is adding salt to the wound with these new amazing posters by artists Becky Cloonan and Sam Wolfe Connelly for Castlevania and Silent Hill respectively. Want 'em? You can pick them up at Emerald City Comicon in Seattle (which starts on April 7). I could really go for the Castlevania one to go with my partially complete series collection (I just need Castlevania Legends, Belmont's Revenge, and Legacy of Darkness)! Gorgeous 'Castlevania' and 'Silent Hill' posters make us miss Konami [Mashable] |
The Division details its first raid patch Posted: 06 Apr 2016 04:00 AM PDT When Tuesday, April 12 rolls around, much like Destiny, The Division is getting a massive update that brings raids (Incursions) into the mix. Ubisoft has now fully detailed the free patch, which will add the "Falcon Lost" Incursion to the game, which requires players to be level 30, and have completed the mission "General Assembly." It's meant as a four-player event. As I noted in my review, my interest in the game waned a bit by the time I reached the finish line, and I haven't really been keeping up with it as much as other online shooters. Maybe with the right group I'll jump back in, as it has a lot going for it. Update 1.1: Incursions [Ubisoft]
Do you play Black Desert Online? Because it sold 400,000 units in the west Posted: 06 Apr 2016 03:30 AM PDT While most of the buzz from Black Desert Online in recent years came from its character creator, it seems like it's actually buzzworthy in the west now, because a ton of people bought the thing. Daum Games has announced that Black Desert has sold 400,000 units in its first month -- and that's just for the European and North American markets. CEO Min Kim notes that they expect upwards of one million in sales in the west alone by the end of the year. Interestingly enough, they claim this success came by shying away from the free-to-play model, allowing players to access all content updates with a premium version. Of course it also has a cash shop just for some extra monetization, and that it is seeing a "much higher pay ration" than the typical 11% figure in free-to-play titles. So yeah, the game is doing well, and will probably be around for a while. I've been meaning to get into it but I haven't had the time.
Total War: Warhammer's Vampire Counts overwhelmed me, but they seem damn cool Posted: 06 Apr 2016 03:00 AM PDT Last year, Jordan conjured up a post titled "Okay, Total War: Warhammer looks awesome," and that about sums up my knowledge of the game. I have no background with Total War aside from a vague awareness that it exists, and some folks are keen on it. I'd say that I've never touched Warhammer in my life, except that I just remembered that I played through Space Marine, but that's in the 40K universe, which this Total War...is not. So when I was two bloody marys and one blood orange mimosa in (because the Vampire Counts faction was the focus of the event, you see) at a Total War appointment and a representative led me to a PC and basically said "Have at it, kid!" I stared blankly at the monitor for a good five minutes. Fair warning, if you wanted an in-depth look at the systems and minutiae of what 98% of America agrees should be called Total Warhammer, it ain't here.
Dota 2's new spectator mode will be a VR experience Posted: 06 Apr 2016 02:30 AM PDT Valve just put out a new trailer for all of the upcoming Steam experiences on its "Steam VR" landing page, and it involves Dota 2 in some capacity. The video initially pans in on the virtual screen showing the action in front of the player, before looking to the side to see a representation of the character's picked, complete with animated avatars and their loadouts. It then pans to a 3D map in the center of the screen that's being updated as the match plays out. Combined with Virtual Desktop, Valve basically wants to make it so you can use your entire system with a headset on. I'm kind of okay with that, as long as the games can keep up.
Gears of War 4 hitting Xbox One on October 11 worldwide Posted: 06 Apr 2016 01:30 AM PDT Earlier this year we heard about a vague bump in Gears of War 4's release window, from holiday 2016 to fall 2016. Today we have some more specificity: Gears of War 4 is releasing on October 11 of this year. For those unwilling and/or incapable of waiting seven months to chainsaw some monster people in half, a beta will be available to all Xbox Live members on April 25. Those who played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will have access even earlier, gaining entry to the beta on April 18.
Baldur's Gate: Siege Of Dragonspear controversy continues with a mod Posted: 06 Apr 2016 01:15 AM PDT [Update: Beamdog's CEO has responded on the official forums, noting that they'll remove or alter some elements of the game and work on patching the bugs.] While the vast majority of Steam reviews for Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear are positive, most of the negative takes deal with pressing issues like bugs and other gameplay related problems. But a select few people also aren't keen on the addition of a trans NPC in the game for various reasons. This partially stems from the accusation that the character seems shoehorned in for the sake of it, as addressed in this missive from "splatypus" on the official forums that touches on some interesting points. Famed fantasy writer Ed Greenwood weighed in on the situation, noting that this type of thing has always been in the genre since the start and that folks shouldn't be upset. Players can also now find a mod that removes that aspect of the game, and many threads in the official Steam forum are being locked. Beamdog has quite a controversy on its hands, and I'm not sure what the solution is. Fixing the game would probably be a good start.
New Final Fantasy XV details emerge, has 'over 200 quests' Posted: 06 Apr 2016 01:00 AM PDT Due to a massive Game Informer article we now have a lot more information on Final Fantasy XV, beyond the news that it's getting a spinoff game, anime series and film, and a second demo. Director Hajime Tabata talks a bit about how they inevitably moved away from the connection to the Fabula Nova Crystallis series (as it was originally conceived as Versus XIII), and that the story focuses on "friendship, destiny, and legacy." Like some past games it will start with a boss battle in a new location as a tutorial of sorts, then shift into Chapter 1 with Noctis and his friends hitting the road. The open world will arrive early on. There's lots more like branching dialogue choices that can lead to more stat bonuses, combat is more responsive since the Duscae demo, you can store things in the trunk of your car, the radio plays classic Final Fantasy music, and there are "over 200 quests" in the game. Read the full breakdown over in the full issue of Game Informer or Nova Crystallis. Game Informer Magazine [Game Informer via Nova Crystallis]
