| Rock Band 4 crowdfunding campaign fails Posted: 05 Apr 2016 03:40 PM PDT In what may or may not be a surprise depending on your perspective, the PC version of Rock Band 4 isn't going to happen. The crowdfunding campaign, held on the investment-based Fig platform, failed to meet its goal. In total, the campaign only managed to pull in $792,817, just barely above 50% of its $1.5 million ask. There just wasn't enough interest, or faith, in the project to give it wings. Bummer news for fans of plastic instruments everywhere. Rock Band will always have a special place in my heart, but I can't say this outcome is totally shocking. Given the unenthusiastic response to Rock Band 4 on console and the general genre fatigue for rhythm games, this campaign looked like a bit of a non-starter from the get-go. I'll solemnly hold a lighter in the air for you, Rock Band 4. Rock Band 4 for PC + Rock Band Network [Fig] |
| Tactical collectible card game Duelyst releasing April 27 Posted: 05 Apr 2016 03:00 PM PDT While I wouldn't count Steven as a card-game guy so much as someone who likes a good bout of turn-based strategy now and again, Duelyst caught his attention with its sweet pixel art and animations a couple years back. I had a similar reaction during its early days on Kickstarter. Duelyst has been in open beta for a while -- long enough to build up an audience that's putting in "more than 150,000 matches" a day, according to Counterplay Games -- and is nearing launch on April 27, 2016 for Windows and Mac. A few weeks off, still, but this animated cutscene sure is neat. |
| Surprise, you can still see Tracer's ass in Overwatch with her new pose Posted: 05 Apr 2016 02:00 PM PDT Remember when Blizzard decided to remove a pose for Tracer from Overwatch? You couldn't possibly forget, as the internet hasn't stopped arguing about it since it happened, blaming each other and just being all-around unpleasant. Well, fret not, as the new pose has now been implemented and you can still see Tracer's buns in her unrealistically skintight suit. Let's be real: the problem isn't so much the original pose, but more the "so tight I can almost make out her asshole" clothing Tracer is wearing. At least the new pose is more playful and fits Tracer's character, which was the main complaint that was voiced before the original was removed. | Rainbow 6: Siege and other Tom Clancy games on sale on PSN Posted: 05 Apr 2016 01:30 PM PDT My brother read The Hunt for Red October in grade four, Lord knows why the school library had a copy. He spent the next few weeks after reading it becoming extra, creepily knowledgeable about nuclear weapons and the lasting impact of Cold War doctrine. I remember, distinctly, the night he explained the concept of M.A.D (that's mutually assured destruction) in our small, yellow-lit kitchen. How it prevented nuclear war by promising to end every single human life on earth should one ever occur. Except, not really. Because history is full of near-accidental launches, incompetent nuclear handling, rogue generals with bigger hard-ons than brains, and (of course) terrorist plots. With that in mind, the world (even in the early '90s) could still end in a wash of nuclear fire at any moment. I would have been in grade three when he explained all of this to me, and it was knowledge that chilled me to the bone then, and probably informed (at least in some way) my worldview for the rest of my life. That is what I credit Tom Clancy with in my life. His decently written paperback thriller introduced me and my brother to nihilistic dread. Now, his games (that are mostly about shooting people) are on sale on PSN from today till April 11. Some up to 75%, what a bargain! If you were on the fence about Rainbow 6: Siege (and who could blame you), the standard edition is now available for $38.99 (arguably the price the game should have released at given how filthy it was with micro-transactions). Or you can get caught up on classics like Rainbow 6: Vegas and Ghost Recon for $4.99. You can check out the PlayStation blog for details on all the games and prices available. | Posted: 05 Apr 2016 01:00 PM PDT VR is pretty big now. Remember way back then when it was just a crude video experience? Strapping cameras to your face with only a few color outputs? I recall seeing a Tekken VR experience in a Gameworks once, where you stepped into a blue room and were expected to throw out lame punches and kicks to register simple attacks in the game. And this wasn't even a Tekken built for VR -- just a Tekken game jury-rigged to simulate VR actions. It was basically a more expensive Sega Activator! |
| D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die is worth five bucks on Steam Posted: 05 Apr 2016 12:30 PM PDT The first (and sadly still only) season of D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die is down to $4.94 for 48 hours on Steam. The Deluxe Edition bundle is also discounted by 67 percent, to $9.89, but don't feel like you need all of those extra costumes and supplemental materials. The core game is sufficiently entertaining. This is a real weird mystery-adventure game from Swery, the mind behind Deadly Premonition, and Access Games. I love it, deep down, even if I don't fully understand much of it. The story is centered around David Young, a tequila-obsessed, time-traveling private detective desperate to find closure over his wife's mysterious murder at the hands of someone whose name starts with "D." While the setup is intriguing, it's the characters that make D4 so darn memorable. Exhibit A: D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die [Steam] [Image] |
| Vaping congressman used $1,302 of campaign funds on Steam games Posted: 05 Apr 2016 11:46 AM PDT San Diego-adjacent congressman Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) is dealing with inquiry by the Federal Election Commission, "for his use of campaign funds to pay for video games on 68 separate occasions," according to the San Diego Union Tribune. Hunter is throwing his son under the bus for the $1,302 of Steam charges between October 13 and December 16 of 2015. His campaign finance disclosure lists the charges with a memo, "personal expense — to be paid back," but nothing was paid back. Hunter's spokesman Joe Kasper alleges the son used his pop's credit card for one game, "and then several unauthorized charges resulted after the father tried to close access to the website." I'm not sure how "several" charges turned into $1,302, but I appreciate the handler's "unauthorized charges resulted" bit of obfuscation, kind of like how a weapon was discharged in the direction of my neighbor's dumb ass house. And it's better than the teen who dropped $8,000 on FIFA. Because the charges were "unauthorized," Kasper says Hunter is trying to get his money back first (from Steam, I guess?), which is why the campaign account hasn't been repaid. The House Ethics Committee website reads, "Campaign funds are to be used for bona fide campaign or political purposes only. Campaign funds are not to be used to enhance a member’s lifestyle, or to pay a member’s personal obligations...Members have no discretion whatsoever to convert campaign funds to personal use." If I've buried the vape lead, Hunter was in the news earlier this year for smoking a vape pen in the middle of a congressional hearing. Though Hunter has received $31,500 since 2010 from big tobacco companies getting into the vape game, Kasper told Gawker that, "Before anyone decided to support him, he vaped and was passionate about the issue" and that those donations have zero impact on his very public displays of vapery. | MechWarrior Online is holding a tournament with a $100K prize purse Posted: 05 Apr 2016 11:30 AM PDT MechWarrior Online has been a lot of things to me, interesting experiment, occasional tormentor, and video game comfort food. But, I never thought I'd see the day it could be a potential payday. In fact, I still don't. Last time I played I was absolutely destroyed by a new meta that made missiles, of all the bloody things, the dominant weapon. But, for people more skilled than me, there has never been a better chance to make some money with stompy robots. |

| Hand of Fate 2 is the deckbuilding combat game I didn't know I needed Posted: 05 Apr 2016 10:30 AM PDT I like to believe that I'm on the pulse of Cool Shit. While Cool Shit means something different to everyone, I include games of all varieties: video, board, card, and Reindeer (just kidding, I've never seen that movie and it looks awful). So when I went to GDC to see Defiant Development's Hand of Fate 2, my initial reaction was "A sinister in-game dealer is forcing me to build a deck of event cards while fighting fools in real-time Arkham-esque combat? Why the hell didn't I play the first game?" Sitting with creative director Morgan Jaffit, I surreptitiously searched Destructoid for coverage of the original, and only found this. So good work, Darren. Everyone else is fired. In the month since my appointment with Jaffit, I've played through the original both for fun and so that I could better understand how the sequel is improving upon past ideas. Here's the short of it, since it's a little late for a formal review: Hand of Fate has a wonderfully simple concept: the Dealer lays out event cards in front of you, and you have to encounter each one. These are framed as small vignettes of an imagined world (or is it from long ago? Or is it happening now? Just who is this bastard dealer?) and mechanically play out like choose-your-own-adventure stories. They're mostly brief and lead to either new weapons/armor/trinkets, or a loss/gain of health and food. Those weapons are used in combat that feels like Arkham-lite. There are counters, dodges, stun attacks, weapon abilities, and the like, but they never feel entirely satisfying to use. Each fight requires you to defeat all of the enemies and bosses, and their varying abilities and behaviors aren't quite enough to staunch off inevitable repetition. My other quibble was the normal difficulty errs on the side of too easy, and the next one up is too much of a jump. Even so, the original Hand of Fate is stylistically clever and unlocking new cards was enough to keep me hooked until the end. Now let's hop aboard the S.S. Sequel! |
| EVE Valkyrie is jetting off to Oculus-competitor Vive Posted: 05 Apr 2016 10:00 AM PDT Even though EVE Valkyrie was pegged as one of the Oculus' flagship launch titles, that doesn't mean that CCP has any particular loyalty to Oculus. EVE Valkyrie is free to spread its wings and soar off to as many different platforms as it pleases. Another one got confirmed today. In a tweet from the EVE Valkyrie account, CCP congratulated Valve and HTC on the Vive's launch. Then, it was announced that the game will come to Vive in 2016. We reached out to a CCP representative who declined to comment on a launch date or launch window for Valkyrie's Vive debut. This news isn't too surprising because of something we learned a year ago. In March of 2015, it was revealed that Valkyrie would eventually be a launch title for PlayStation VR. That revelation made it apparent that the game wasn't exclusive to Oculus, and would probably appear on every virtual platform reality it possibly could. That certainly appears to be the case. @EVEValkyrie [Twitter] |
| Outlast 2 is teasing a reckoning Posted: 05 Apr 2016 09:30 AM PDT Last we heard, Red Barrels was aiming for a fall 2016 release for Outlast 2. Assuming that's still the case, and based on this unsettling backwards-audio teaser video for the horror game, I bet we'll start to see a lot more of it soon -- specifically, later this month at PAX East in Boston. With the audio reversed, the message is still hard to make out in spots, but the most important part is clear: "On the fourth month and twenty-second day of the sixteenth year of the third millennium, our reckoning begins." April 22, 2016 is the opening day of PAX. At the very least, a new trailer seems likely. The religious theme has worked well in these teaser materials, but I'm more than ready for actual game footage at this point. |
| Devolver-published #SelfieTennis looks, uh, weird Posted: 05 Apr 2016 09:00 AM PDT We've all known for a while that for virtual reality to take off, it needs to facilitate playing with oneself. Developer VR Unicorns perhaps took that advice too literally and built a game about playing tennis, except you continuously teleport from one end of the court to the other in order to return your own serves and keep a volley going. Also, it's almost like it was put through a Keita Takahashi filter, with bright colors, flat textures, and bizarre tennis ball-headed, cloud-clad dancing people. Oh, and then there's an in-game selfie stick. I don't know why. Devolver Digital is publishing #SelfieTennis for the Vive. It's currently up on Steam for $20. |
| This puzzle game has some slick-looking snake physics Posted: 05 Apr 2016 08:30 AM PDT I'm not overly fond of snakes, but I like the potential of a puzzle-platformer in which you play as one that slithers and wraps around objects semi-realistically. This is Snake Pass, a PC game from Sumo Digital that came out of its first internal game jam. It'll be playable later this week at EGX Rezzed 2016. The designer, Seb Liese, used to be a biology teacher before he joined the industry several years ago. His "snake physics" prototype fared well at the game jam and was adapted into what we see today. While we know Sumo for its work on other people's properties (Dead Island 2, Crackdown 3, Forza Horizon 2), it plans to "explore the possibility of creating [its] own IP" with titles like Snake Pass. |
| Lego Marvel's Avengers gets free Ant-Man DLC on PlayStation Posted: 05 Apr 2016 08:00 AM PDT As promised, Lego Marvel's Avengers owners on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 can download an "exclusive" free level and character pack based on Ant-Man starting today. Ant-Man can shrink and grow, as you'd hope, and the new Michael Peña narration is a nice touch. The playable characters are Ant-Thony, Yellowjacket, Hope Van Dyne, Hank Pym, Scott Lang, Cassie Lang, Darren Cross, Luis, Ant-Man (Scott), Ant-Man (Hank), and The Wasp (Janet). I don't have the game yet, but I'll add this DLC (PS4, PS3) to my account just to be safe. LEGO Marvel’s Avengers Free Ant-Man DLC Out Today [PlayStation Blog] |
| We just got a little more info about Bethesda's E3 press conference Posted: 05 Apr 2016 07:30 AM PDT In early February, Bethesda laid bare its plans to host another E3 press conference this year. The bulk of the details were there -- it's on June 12 at 7pm Pacific. That's all most people need to know, as they just have to find a stream and watch the going-ons. Well, an official invite to the event just hit our inbox, and it has a few more details. It seems prudent to share that information with all of you. As mentioned above, Bethesda's E3 Showcase takes place on June 12 at 7pm. While it starts at 7pm, doors open at 5pm. The event looks as if it'll last an hour, and then BE3 Plus begins, which is likely the playable demos portion; we don't yet know what games will be available to play. At 9pm, a mystery band takes the stage. All of this might be slightly more relevant to some people than others. While last year's Bethesda press conference was open to the public (and a lot of folks showed up), there's a lottery process this time. Bethesda's restricting access to a limited number of winners. If you will be in Los Angeles on June 12, try your hand at winning a spot by registering here. And, if you would rather get the good word from an adorable graphic with all the pertinent information, well, I couldn't blame you. Take a gander below if that sounds like you. |
| Gears of War 4 will have split-screen for all game modes Posted: 05 Apr 2016 07:00 AM PDT One of the earmarks of Xbox's biggest shooters is the inclusion of local cooperative play. Both Halo and Gears of War have had split-screen options tracing all the way back to their respective franchise's origins. Developer 343 Industries omitted split-screen from Halo 5 last year, and the decision was met with an overwhelmingly negative response. Gears of War 4 won't suffer that same fate. In an interview with Game Informer (and as reported on by GameSpot), Gears of War 4 head Rod Fergusson confirmed that the game will have local co-op via split-screen. What's more, Fergusson explained that the feature will be available for every single game mode, from campaign to multiplayer. "We can never get rid of that," he commented. However, it comes with a minor concession. Instances of split-screen running mean that the game will be toned down to 30 frames per second. This won't be an issue in the campaign, as that was always set for 1080p/30fps (like Gears of War Ultimate Edition); the multiplayer runs at 60fps, so that will effectively be halved to make it work via split-screen. It won't be long before we see the effects on multiplayer. Microsoft is holding a technical beta later this month to test Gears of War 4's servers with a large player base, and split-screen will presumably be available for this. Those who don't mind sacrificing frame rate will get a little help from their friends. |
| See how Killer Instinct has been upgraded visually Posted: 05 Apr 2016 06:30 AM PDT Killer Instinct just had a recent update that brought it into Season 3, alongside of a whole bunch of roster updates. But that's not the only thing it has, as the Iron Galaxy team has also upgraded the game's visuals, which includes both character models and the actual arenas themselves. Seeing free updates like this is great for a fighting game since we're so used to minor balance changes on top of more paid content. Get a look at what's been changed in the video below. |
| Posted: 05 Apr 2016 06:00 AM PDT Quantum Break is a video game that is not comfortable being only a video game. Born from Microsoft's now-abandoned cross-media initiative, Quantum Break is many things, only a fraction of them being a video game. It's advertised as part television show, but it's also part novel, part film, and part radio broadcast. In a way, this is a shame because it is an absolute pleasure to play. It's a game that excels at being a game, yet implores the player to spend a majority of the time either watching, reading, or listening. Maybe that's okay, though, because all the other components are executed with similarly stunning proficiency. Still, it's hard to not feel as if Quantum Break's individual parts outweigh the sum at times. |
| The upcoming Story of Seasons game will have Nintendo costumes Posted: 05 Apr 2016 05:30 AM PDT Bokujou Monogatari 3tsu no Sato no Taisetsuna Tomodachi, also known as the "next Story of Seasons," will sport a Nintendo-based bonus. According to Famitsu (by way of Perfectly Nintendo), the game will have costumes based on Luigi, Toad, Peach, and Mario, in addition to "more" characters. Note that these are in fact outfits and not actual avatars, as the in-game cast will merely sport their clothes (or skin, Leatherface style). We'll know soon enough if "more" means Waluigi, as the game is out on June 23 in Japan. Story of Seasons: the latest entry to have Mario costumes [Perfectly Nintendo] |
| Posted: 05 Apr 2016 05:00 AM PDT Those who are on the fence with virtual reality typically cite a dissonance between the actual state of a real-life subject compared to the actions taking place in-game. In other words, outside of the HTC Vive, most VR headsets skew towards having the player sit down and use a traditional controller, which can be jarring if you're running around in-game. Esper 2 cleverly finds a loophole for this problem by perpetually placing the player character in a chair, and giving them telekinetic abilities to justify the lack of tactile feedback. |
| Dead Space is now a part of EA Access Posted: 05 Apr 2016 04:30 AM PDT Mere days after arriving on the Xbox One by way of backward compatibility, EA has now added Dead Space to its EA Access program. So if you didn't already own it on the Xbox 360's marketplace, you can play it for free -- provided that you're a subscriber. Having tried out EA Access for myself for several months, I'm pretty happy with it though! $5 is a reasonable fee for a small library of games to mess around with, even if I'm not a fan of charging people for "Early Access" to certain games. | Classic 'Doughnut Drake' skin will not be in Uncharted 4 Posted: 05 Apr 2016 04:00 AM PDT Doughnut Drake, a staple of the Uncharted series since the first game, is no more. Speaking to GamesRadar, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann noted that he "didn't want to have a laugh at someone’s expense," and that he "thought we’d matured beyond that." Apparently the model was done and the decision was reached to not include it in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. I find this change of heart really odd, almost like the development team is scared of the current climate -- because even as recent as the Nathan Drake Collection six months ago, they doubled-down on this skin. Man, some of these recent self-censorship choices are really baffling. If you want something in your game to be a certain way, go for it, but to see public pressure actually influence development like this is concerning. There'll be no Donut Drake in Uncharted 4 [GamesRadar] |
| Hitman's monthly episode cadence isn't set in stone Posted: 05 Apr 2016 03:30 AM PDT You probably could have predicted this one. IO Interactive, developer of the new episodic Hitman series, has recently revealed that the monthly schedule of releases is now "subject to change." Whereas it seemed like the episodes were mostly completed and were being released in waves, a recent hiccup regarding the "Elusive Targets" gametype brought the subject of delays to the forefront. While it makes perfect sense, the lack of confidence displayed here could lead to more delays, so buyer beware if you're going for the Season Pass. Hitman [Twitter] |
| Resident Evil 0 director reflects back on 20 years of zombies Posted: 05 Apr 2016 03:00 AM PDT It is the 20th anniversary of Resident Evil and the only new game in the series planned for 2016 release is the competitive multiplayer shooter Umbrella Corps. Yikes. Well, a Resident Evil 7 announcement at, say, E3 is inevitable...right? What the hell else is Capcom busy with now that Street Fighter V is in the wild? Deep Down? Well, here's Resident Evil 0 director Koji Oda reflecting on 20 years of Raccoon City. This is the second in a 20th anniversary video interview series Capcom is putting on. It kicked off with Hiroyuki Kobayashi. Oda was most recently involved in the HD remake of RE0 (there's talk about Wesker mode and dashed plans to let you play as some of the enemies), but like Kobayashi has been there since the first game. Also he directed that new Strider, which was pretty good. Anyways, Capcom, for real: no pressure. We don't actually need Resident Evil 7. We can all just keep playing Resident Evil 4 forever. It's that good. |
| Fallout 4's Wasteland Workshop DLC drops next week Posted: 05 Apr 2016 02:00 AM PDT You may want to put the finishing touches on your custom-built robot buddy in Fallout 4, assuming you're down for the next bit of DLC -- it's coming to all platforms on April 12, 2016. Wasteland Workshop will let you capture and "tame" creatures like deathclaws (cool!) and human raiders (weird!), and make them fight. This $4.99 add-on pack also adds decorative options -- "nixie tube lighting, letter kits, taxidermy," to name a few -- with which to deck out your settlements. This is the part of the season pass I'm least excited for, personally, but we've got something much more substantial coming down the line with the Far Harbor DLC releasing next month. (Please be good.) |
| Buncha jamokes review bomb Baldur's Gate over trans character Posted: 05 Apr 2016 01:30 AM PDT A noticeable number of overly sensitive folks are screaming into their keyboards in outrage over the latest Baldur's Gate expansion, Siege of Dragonspear, which bridges the gap between the original game and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn over its "25+ hour" run time. The culprit? A transgender character is in the game. Mind, there do seem to be a lot of bug complaints across Steam, GOG, and Metacritic user reviews, though it's hard to imagine that warrants the slew of 0/10 scores. There are vague complaints about "the writing," though most of the user reviews I've read that are more pithy than "it's bad" are complaining about how the DLC, "pushes needles [sic] SJW stuff" and "is too politically correct" and has an "anti white anti straight hatred" that perpetuates "the reality of regressive left fascism." Which is code for a bunch of people complaining about the developer "pushing its politics on gamers" by, uh, pushing their politics on gamers that use these reviews as a resource/the developer, the lovely irony doomed to forever go unacknowledged. The mere existence of a minor NPC who mentions she's transgender is enough to push these people over the edge.
On the other hand, the alleged inclusion of memes and modern vernacular, damn, that's an A+ gripe. I was pretty bummed to see the practice reach as high as Nintendo's recent localization. An internet meme in a Zelda game does feel unwelcome, so too does the stale, "it's about ethics in..." joke apparently used in Dragonspear. And the bugs! If they're there, the bugs are unwelcome. The problem is there are plenty of positive reviews that don't mention bugs so it becomes hard to tell who just has an ax to grind beyond the folks that are blatantly telegraphing their ax grinding with cackles and smithery pantomime. This disrupts the utility of the user review as assholes have proxy wars in the most visible places they can find. The game's Steam page with the default "Filter by -> Helpful" lists only overwhelmingly negative reviews. Except if you poke around you'll find 103 positive reviews to 45 negative reviews. The spread is way worse on GOG and Metacritic, but that's because you don't have to own a copy of a game to leave a review on those platforms. The latter has a long history of people score-bombing games for any old reason. Someone doing something different with a beloved classic is, often, a reason in and of itself. But on the exceedingly negative end of Dragonspear's spectrum, there's mad hyperbolic language, rampant unironic use of "SJW," and plenty of offensive language about a minor NPC who tells you something about herself if you ask her two specific questions about it. Writer Amber Scott said, "I'm the writer and creator. I get to make decisions about who I write about and why. I don't like writing about straight/white/cis people all the time. It's not reflective of the real world, it sets up s/w/c as the 'normal' baseline from which 'other' characters must be added, and it's boring." Beamdog founder Trent Oster asked fans in the game's forum, "If you are playing the game and having a good time, please consider posting a positive review to balance out the loud minority which is currently painting a dark picture for new players." |
| PS4's 3.50 update is coming, provides 'appear offline' and remote play Posted: 05 Apr 2016 01:15 AM PDT Do not be alarmed! Brave Fencer Musashi was an amazing game (with an okay lesser known sequel), but it doesn't have anything to do with this PS4 update, as it's merely codenamed "Musashi," for the actual historical figure no doubt. I couldn't resist -- people need to know the greatness that is Brave Fencer. But yeah, a PS4 update! Tomorrow we'll get version 3.50, which will finally allow an "appear offline" status, more notifications, scheduled events, and remote play. For the latter, the resolution options only go up to 720p (and default at 540p), but 60fps will be possible. The remote play launcher will be available here sometime tomorrow. It took them nearly a decade, but the PSN finally has "appear offline!" Now we just need the ability to change our PSN ID, but that likely won't happen anytime soon. PlayStation 3.50 [PS Blog] |
