Now I'm even more into that Super Famicom-themed New 3DS XL

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 03:00 PM PDT

If we all got one free do-over and could pick out a single 3DS design with no pesky restrictions to bog us down, I wouldn't hesitate to choose the upcoming Super Famicom-style New 3DS XL.

Unsurprisingly, it's a Japan exclusive, and it's also region-locked, but the design is so dang cool! That coolness even extends to the handheld's box which, similar to those classic Pokémon 2DS cases, I'd be afraid of opening. Wouldn't want to rip off a chunk with the adhesive or cause a tear.

If you were thinking of getting this limited-edition model and are incorrigible enough to act on those impulses, Play-Asia is (or at least was, while I was writing this) accepting pre-orders. It's $259.99 and is expected to ship in July 2016. The initial supply has been claimed, so keep your eyes peeled.

I can't get enough of Cuphead's character animations

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 01:00 PM PDT

This is the year Cuphead comes out and that makes me ridiculously happy.

Time has an insightful new interview with Studio MDHR lead artist Chad Moldenhauer about the game and its wonderful hand-drawn animation, and oh my lord you need to see the behind-the-scenes gifs. There's a bunch of 'em! It's also a good recap of where the project is at and how it has changed.

Speaking about the Xbox One's "lifetime" console exclusivity, Moldenhauer said that "without Microsoft's help and support, it would be hard to get to where we're at today."

He reiterated that the scope has grown from a "small indie game" with around eight to ten bosses to "exactly what we dreamed of." There are side-scrolling platforming levels between fights and the team was able to add "many more weapons and secrets and more story."

It's also lovely to hear that should Cuphead prove successful and enable the artists to do another game, they "will always focus on hand-drawn 2D animation. Not necessarily from the 1930s, but every era has really cool stuff that can be borrowed from or reworked into games."

Why yes, I would like to see a wave of sewage wipe out a whole city

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 12:00 PM PDT

This short video by YouTube user flawless128 speaks to my inner psychopathic mayor.

I'm not alone, right? After following the rules and making decisions like a decent, compassionate leader, you inevitably reach the point where you've had enough. You have to abuse your power to stave off boredom. Now, I've done some unsavory shit in games like RollerCoaster Tycoon and SimCity, but nothing to the extent of a "sewage tsunami" in Cities: Skylines. It's cruel, unusual, and just plain gross.

This would have been such a fitting end to Steven's city of Ass.

EA backpedals on pre-season NHL predictions, probably still won't be right

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 11:00 AM PDT

Before the beginning of the 2015-16 NHL season, EA Sports predicted that the Anaheim Ducks would be the eventual Stanley Cup champions. After a shaky start, Anaheim eventually got its act together to win the Pacific Division. EA rewards that by reneging on its earlier prediction.

Now that the playoffs are upon us, EA no longer has confidence in the Ducks. Using NHL 16 to simulate the postseason given current circumstances, EA is backing the Washington Capitals. According to the simulation, Washington will beat San Jose in seven games.

The brilliance of the NHL playoffs is that almost anything can happen. In 2012, the Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup as an eight-seed. Good team chemistry and hot goaltending can take anyone to the promised land.

But, the idea that Washington and San Jose -- both with reputations as perennial chokers -- will get to the Stanley Cup Finals? That's almost too wacky even for hockey. Either EA's horribly wrong like it was with the Super Bowl, or I'll be forced to eat crow. Actually, I kind of hope it's the latter so no one can ever give Ovechkin grief when he almost decapitates teammates with garage doors. Russian Machine Never Breaks!

Players can trade gear in The Division now, but no one's making money off of it

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 10:30 AM PDT

Any persistent game with rare loot drops will naturally have its share of players looking to take shortcuts. Titles like World of Warcraft and Dota 2 have entire economies that thrive on the sale of in-game items for real world money. Some people would rather spend money instead of time to be successful.

When The Division first released in early March, players couldn't share gear. This was a very intentional design decision by Ubisoft. It sent two messages. One, the developer didn't want players leaning on others for equipment; it wanted everyone to earn their share independently. And, Ubisoft didn't want a second-hand market springing up where people could simply buy their way through the game.

With the arrival of the Incursions update, Ubisoft relented ever-so-slightly. Players can now trade gear with one another. However, it's done in a way that still prevents re-sale on exterior websites like G2A.

Here's how it works: Division players can swap gear with one another under a tightly-controlled set of circumstances. Equipment can only be traded for up to an hour after it was initially picked up. Also, it's restricted to people who were in your group when the item was dropped, and to people who are in your group at the time of the trade.

So, your friend who plays the role of sniper wasn't with you when a named enemy dropped a perfect high-end sniper rifle? Yeah, he can't ever get that. He has to find his own by actually playing the game -- not by letting his friends do the work, and not by simply buying one. That's some good middle-ground that Ubisoft found.

Zen Studios' latest is Aliens vs. Pinball

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 10:00 AM PDT

It has been some time since I've checked out any of Zen Studios' pinball games, but the Aliens franchise is enough of a draw to grab my attention. Aliens vs. Pinball, a three-table compilation, is coming to consoles, mobile, PC, and Mac this month (basically everywhere except Nintendo platforms).

The Aliens table shown in the trailer initially put me off with its haphazard dialogue snippets, but I like the general look of the Alien vs. Predator and Alien: Isolation tables in these screenshots. And I will say, that bit where the Xenomorphs swarm the flippers is a neat, tonally appropriate gimmick.

This is releasing April 26, 2016, which is apparently "Alien Day." Because of LV-426. Marketing!

Stealing from GameStop's dumpster and reselling games is frowned upon

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 09:30 AM PDT

Two hooligans (YouTube pranksters) decided it would be a good idea to go dumpster diving behind a GameStop and then attempt to resell the games they found to the very same store that threw them away. It turns out these particular GameStop employees weren't very observant and purchased their garbage back.

Just before leaving the store, the guys revealed their trick which understandably upset the GameStop employee, prompting them to swear and call the police once they left. From the looks of it, the guys got away scot-free, with a whole $7 and some change.

It should be noted that dumpster diving is illegal in many states, though I'm not sure about the legality of selling someone back their trash.

Not all of Total War: Warhammer's DLC will cost money

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 09:00 AM PDT

Creative Assembly is no stranger to DLC for its Total War series and the upcoming Warhammer seems particularly suited for post-release content given how much stuff there is to the property. Thankfully, some of it will be free -- including new units, heroes, lords, and another playable race.

Here's the vague-as-heck summary:

The studio also has plans for paid DLC, of course, and there are general descriptions of what all that will entail in this blog post. Lord Packs, Race Packs, Campaign Packs -- it's a pack overload.

The developers say they have "a pretty good idea of what [they're] aiming to do with new characters and races, but do you have a favourite? What would you like to see next?"

Keep in mind (and this is something I had totally forgotten about), Total War: Warhammer is only the first in a planned trilogy of games. Some of our true favorites surely won't make it in right away. On that note, a quick reminder: the mighty forces of Chaos are a pre-order bonus.

The Humble Telltale Games Bundle has some pretty good stuff

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 08:30 AM PDT

Many people could be forgiven for mistakenly thinking that Telltale Games came into existence with The Walking Dead - Season 1. That's where Telltale hit its first real home run with episodic content of mainstream properties, and its the reason that the developer is as well-known as it is today.

But, the truth is that Telltale made a whole lot of video games before The Walking Dead. They're celebrated, sure, but they don't have that same kind of popularity. The newly-launched Humble Telltale Games Bundle offers a cheap look at some of the studio's earlier work, along with the opportunity to pick up some of its more recent titles.

Anyone willing to contribute $1 or more to the Humble sale will receive Back to the Future: The Game, Sam & Max: Devil's Playhouse, Poker Night at the Inventory, Puzzle Agent 1 & 2, and The Walking Dead - Season 1.

For the more fiscally liberal, contributing more than the sale's average ($6.61 at time of writing) will get all the games in the $1 tier and The Walking Dead: 400 Days, The Wolf Among Us, Poker Night 2, and Tales from the Borderlands. And, donating more than $12 nets all the other titles, Game of Thrones, and The Walking Dead - Season 2. That's a lot of episodes for a Hamilton and two Washingtons.

Former head of Rockstar North sues developer, alleges $150M in unpaid royalties

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 08:00 AM PDT

Back in January, we reported that Leslie Benzies resigned from his position as the president of Rockstar North after taking a 17-month sabbatical. As it turns out, that isn't entirely how it happened. Benzies insists that Rockstar willfully deceived him, including withholding a massive amount of money that Benzies says he's entitled to.

Recently, Benzies filed a lawsuit against Rockstar which alleges that the developer owes him $150 million in unpaid royalties. According to Benzies, this stems from a royalty agreement that he signed with Rockstar founders Sam Houser and Dan Houser back in 2008. Ostensibly, this agreement was a reward for Benzies' contributions to the studio, and it brought him into the upper echelon of earners at Rockstar. It made Benzies a "Rockstar Principal" and ensured that he was compensated identically to the Housers.

In September 2014, Benzies arranged to take his sabbatical. It was planned from September 1 through March 31 -- seven months' time. In December, Take-Two Interactive decided not to allocate royalties to Benzies anymore; the royalty agreement plan didn't expressly state that Benzies was entitled to royalties while on sabbatical. On March 23, 2015, Benzies sent a demand letter to Take-Two for unpaid royalties and for his promised "exact financial parity" with the Housers.

On April 1, according to Benzies, he attempted to return to work at Rockstar North only to find out that his access to the building had been revoked. A security guard let him in, but the Rockstar North building manager insisted that he leave the premises. On April 2, Benzies sent a notice of termination to Rockstar, a letter that framed his exit from the company as "for good cause" or as a firing without cause. This, in theory (and if true), would make him eligible for compensation still contractually owed to him.

Benzies believes this treatment was undue, and that he's the victim of a ploy by the Housers to have him ousted. Benzies' lawsuit cites "mounting resentment" on behalf of the Housers, leading them to deceive him. He also infers that the company's royalty allocation committee that determined Benzies was no longer entitled to royalties may not be a group that ever actually met.

Benzies' lawsuit for $150 million in damages was met with a counter-suit from Rockstar. Filed just yesterday, Rockstar alleges a breach of contract by Benzies. Rockstar maintains that one of the terms of the royalty agreement plan is that the committee's decisions are final and binding. Benzies is supposedly in violation of that by contesting the decision and continually demanding his exact financial parity.

There's a lot to unwrap here, and there's a lot of money at stake. Surely, this matter is far from being resolved. We'll make sure to follow this story as information becomes publicly available.

Atlus is localizing The King of Fighters XIV

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 07:30 AM PDT

Atlus is bringing The King of Fighters XIV to the Americas later this year on PlayStation 4. This is the first game in the main series that ditches sprites and instead opts to go fully 3D, as the Maximum Impact spinoffs were in 3D previously.

50 fighters will be available in-game at launch, which is an impressive number, especially when compared to the recently released Street Fighter V. KoF XIV has tweaked the formula of past games to make it more accessible to newcomers while apparently keeping hardcore players happy as well. If you're like me and haven't played much of the King of Fighters series, it sounds like this might be a good entry point.

So what is the deal with that dragon? All I know is that his facial hair game in on point and his eyebrows are on fleek.

Esper 1 is coming to Oculus Rift, Esper 2 owners get it for free

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 07:00 AM PDT

In case you haven't heard, Esper 2 is a quirky, very fun puzzle game that makes great use of its virtual reality setting on Gear VR and the Oculus Rift. But there's a lesser known Esper 1 (the "2" isn't merely for show) that also exists, and now, it's also coming to the Rift storefront this spring.

Developer Coatsink will bring the game over as part of a bundle for $14.99, which nets you both games. If you already bought Esper 2, you'll get the original for free. Not a bad deal all told!

Fallout 4's Wasteland Workshop is out today

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 06:30 AM PDT

I put a lot of time into Fallout 4's settlement system, so on one hand I'm pretty excited for the home improvement focused Wasteland Workshop DLC. I can totally get down with nixie tube lighting, new signage, and new trophies to deck out my settlements. I'm not opposed to the idea of capturing and taming live animals (and raiders, questionably enough) for my own amusement either.

On the other hand though, a quiet desperate voice in the back of my head keeps asking "exactly how much adhesive and copper wire am I going to have to farm for all this bullshit?"

I guess we'll all find out shortly. Wasteland Workshop is out today. It's included in the Season Pass or $4.99 a la carte. I'll be working on my review today to let you know if that is money well spent or not as soon as possible.

I strongly suggest not watching this Dark Souls III launch trailer

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 06:00 AM PDT

I've tried to spoil as little of Dark Souls III as possible, and that includes using old ass screens that mostly show the beta area towards the beginning of the game.

But it's out now, and if you either aren't sold yet or want to see all sorts of spoiler-heavy information, you can watch this new launch trailer below. Or not, because it shows no less than five bosses that have never been seen before, which completely sucks the element of surprise out of those encounters.

Watch this leaked Gears of War 4 alpha footage while you can

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 05:30 AM PDT

Someone uploaded what appears to be Gears of War 4 alpha footage to YouTube before deleting the video shortly thereafter as they were most likely breaking some sort of embargo. Lucky for us, someone downloaded the video and mirrored it elsewhere for us to see.

It looks like Gears all right. While it may be rough around the edges a bit do note that this seems to be an early build, as this trailer is supposed to contain footage from the beta which you can see is a lot easier on the eyes with far better shadows etcetera. The Gears of War 4 beta starts next week on April 18.

Touhou fighting game delayed in Japan for 'last-minute adjustments'

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 05:00 AM PDT

Originally slated for a May 6 release on PS4, Touhou Sky Arena is now being pushed back to a "May window." Developer Area Zero cites "last-minute adjustments" for the title, with nothing in specific. So if you were planning on downloading it with your Japanese PSN account, you may have to wait a bit!

As a departure for the franchise's typical shoot 'em up style, the Sky Arena series, which kicked off in 2011, is a 3D arena fighter.

That Pokemon Sun & Moon CoroCoro 'scoop' was a letdown

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 04:30 AM PDT

Some time after the announcement of Pokémon Sun & Moon, CoroCoro magazine noted that it would have a "big scoop" on the game this month. Sadly, folks over in Japan have already gotten their hands on the magazine, and it's nothing of the sort -- almost a troll, in fact. The feature says this "would be a worst first scoop," but "we can't even see any Pokémon!" Now they're saying next month is the scoop. That's a bummer to say the least.

We did get the lowdown on what Magearna is though, which is set to appear in the next movie. According to the magazine, it will be a steel/fairy type. Alright, I can work with that.

Street Fighter V glitch allows players to select previous patch iterations

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 04:00 AM PDT

As most hardcore Street Fighter fans know, some previous Capcom games have had a system similar to the new Mortal Kombat, in that players can select multiple iterations, or versions of characters -- whether it's from past patches or previous games.

Due to a glitch, that's sort of happening with Street Fighter V. Fans have datamined the game's files and found that it keeps a log of past versions in a different folder. They've found a way to view said characters and change up their moveset.

As Shoryuken notes, V hasn't received any major balance patches just yet so this is mostly moot, but it's something to be aware of.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force's site is open for business

The game no one asked for, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, now has a teaser site.

What's that you say? It's a million years away so we don't need a teaser site? Well what if I told you that it's slated for a spring release window in the US? That's soon, right? In the near future, we'll be able to see if this is the monstrosity we expect it to be, or a surprising little gem.

I uh...I'm not holding out hope.

Review: Space Pirate Trainer

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 03:00 AM PDT

Last year, when the arrival of retail VR headsets was still a pipe dream of the distant future, one of my biggest questions for the tech is how it would impact game design going forward. Would games have to fundamentally change how they are designed and played to work with the new tech. Space Pirate Trainer demonstrates that in many key regards games do have to change for VR, particularly when room tracking and motion controllers are involved.

The ability to move your head to look around, while independently moving two separate objects within the world based on location rather than sight, fundamentally changes how first person shooters ar played. Pirate is one of the most interesting first person shooters I have played in a long time mechanically, and yes that is because it's taking advantage of being played in VR.

New 3DS hack enables wireless video streaming

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 02:00 AM PDT

Capturing video from a 3DS is cumbersome. It requires a physical mod to be installed onto your console, costing a ton of money as well voiding your warranty to hell and back. Who has the time for that? That's why Reddit user Yangumasuta is developing a custom firmware (read: this shit has the potential to brick your precious handheld) that uses the extra power of the New 3DS to wirelessly stream video to your PC.

Showcased in a video using Fire Emblem Fates, Yangumasuta writes "This feature is still in development! This is the first (preview) build of NTR that includes video streaming capability, so obviously performance isn't optimal."

It's super early stuff, but I think it's cool to see New 3DS owners unlocking the power of the hardware in ways that Nintendo had never intended in the first place.

Yo-Kai Watch 3 launches in Japan in July with two versions, is set in America

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 01:00 AM PDT

According to CoroCoro, Yo-Kai Watch 3 will arrive in Japan on June 16. It's set for the 3DS platform once again, and will come in Sushi and Tempura varieties, just like Pokemon Red and Blue. As a note, Yo-Kai Watch 2 ended up getting a third version a la Pokemon Platinum, which is probably the one we'll get eventually in the west, and likely the strategy for the third game.

In a change of pace for a series that typically is set in Japan, the third iteration will instead take place in "St. Peanutsburg." If the food moniker didn't tip you off, it's set somewhere in the United States. It will also feature "American Yo-Kai," which has the potential to be pretty amazing.

Bandai Namco files trademark for Amazing Katamari Damacy

Posted: 11 Apr 2016 11:00 PM PDT

Bandai Namco has registered an European trademark for “Amazing Katamari Damacy”.

The listing was spotted by NeoGAFfer ekim (via IGN). All we know is that the trademark was filed yesterday by Bandai Namco under classifications 9, 28, and 41

Class 9 is chiefly “apparatus and instruments for scientific research in laboratories” (although does mention computers, discs and digital recording media), 28 is “Games and playthings; gymnastic and sporting articles not included in other classes; decorations for Christmas trees” (it also has arcade video game machines listed there) and 41 is “Education; providing of training; entertainment; sporting and cultural activities”.

Given the Katamari franchise hasn’t used the word Damacy in a title for several years, does it mean we have a remaster or re-release of some kind? It's either that or a new range of Christmas decorations.

This bug is crashing Dark Souls III for PC players

Posted: 11 Apr 2016 10:00 PM PDT

An unknown Dark Souls III bug is preventing some PC players from progressing past the first bonfire.

Complaints on Steam, the Steam forums, and Reddit indicate a stability issue that’s causing the game to crash on PC either after the first bonfire, or sometimes when players approach Firelink Shrine.

The cause seems unclear, though it appears it may be linked with what class you’re playing as, as - to date - Knights seem able to proceed without incident.

Some are reporting that setting the lighting level to “low” addresses the problem, but as yet there’s no formal word from From Software or Bandai Namco on what’s happening or how to fix it, although the problem has been reported and the Bandai twitter account is redirecting players to its customer support team.

Are you having problems playing Dark Souls III on PC? Let us know what below, and please share your tips if you’ve managed to overcome the issues!

Heart Forth, Alicia sure is looking nice in these gifs

Posted: 11 Apr 2016 06:00 PM PDT

I'm not the only one on staff who's down for the metroidvania Heart Forth, Alicia. Darren graciously popped into chat today with a gif from the latest backer update and I was so enamored, I forgot to cull the post for notable tidbits. Hours later, I've finally remembered to go back and do that.

There's specific talk about what the team has been up to lately -- touching up early areas, putting together the final two dungeons, revising character portraits -- but the part that stood out to me most was how involved one of the cutscenes is. It has over 17 characters, multiple screen-size effects, fight sequences, deaths, a "minute-long pre-rendered flashback," and a hot air balloon (!!!).

"There's still months of work, grinding, and polishing ahead of us, but it's tremendously rewarding to see years of work slowly coming together," says designer Alonso Martin. "Knowing we haven't cut any corners and that we've stayed uncompromised towards quality makes me feel a special pride in my heart, and it makes all the stresses, efforts, and sacrifices absolutely worth it."

That last one is older, but it's too good not to include.

The Steam Controller looks like the best way to play Dark Souls III

Posted: 11 Apr 2016 04:00 PM PDT

Now that Dark Souls III is out in the wild on Steam, Valve has released an official configuration setting for the Steam Controller to help you praise the sun in style.

Now, I'm not the biggest fan of the controller -- unlike some writers around here (Hi Joe!) -- but this just looks like the best way to play. Not only can you easily navigate menus, you can also quickly spin around as if you were using a mouse. Who needs skills when you can just buy the Steam Controller? Luckily it is being offered in a price-reduced bundle with the game on Steam so if you've been thinking about buying one, now would be a good time.

It looks like Dark Souls III managed to sneak in an easy mode. ;)
