Import no more! Order games straight from Amazon Japan Posted: 08 Mar 2016 03:00 PM PST I have imported one thing: a white PlayStation 3 controller. I spent more money on it than one should spend on a controller, because imports are expensive. And unlike a lot of games fans choose to import, the white PS3 controller eventually was released in the US anyways! Point is, you can now order and receive Japanese games direct from Amazon Japan, even if you are not in Japan. Even if you are, perhaps, in America. This eliminates the need for middlemen, like Play Asia, at least in some instances. That's pretty good. Has anyone ever even said "middlemen" in a positive connotation? Perhaps appreciatively in an orgy setting, but I digress. Now, you can't use your existing Amazon account. You will have to make an Amazon Japan account, and keep searching for the buttons to translate the page into English (unless you read Japanese). And when you add your address, make sure to fill it under the "Add International Address" field, unless you live in Japan, at which point this news is not for you. Go away. Now everyone go buy Puyo Puyo Tetris (ぷよぷよテトリス) on PS4 and play that shit with me, it's amazing. You can be a fish! Don't buy Wii U/3DS games because they -- among others -- won't work on your gaijin consoles. |
The adorable Ghost of a Tale may be in closed beta soon Posted: 08 Mar 2016 02:00 PM PST It has been a long time since we have posted about the crowdfunded Ghost of a Tale, a game that Jim Sterling gushed over upon announcement. It looks like the adorable Dark Souls-like adventure is finally nearing completion after three years and the developer hopes for it to be heading into beta soon. I'm not a huge fan of stealth games, and I suck at the Souls series, but I'm always down to play as a cute mouse. Always. Do you hear me, indie developers? I want more mouse games, and I want them now. I'm looking forward to giving this one a play when it launches on PC and Xbox One sometime this year. Beta soon…?!! [Ghost of a Tale] |
The Division: Best waiting-in-line sim of 2016? Posted: 08 Mar 2016 01:00 PM PST Steven Hansen Presents Tom Clancy's The Division came out today. Chris is working tirelessly on a verdict, but if you've played a Ubisoft game, you probably know what to expect, with that company's wide paint brush of open-world business (this time heavy with multiplayer components, like The Crew). If you've played a major, online-heavy game at or around launch -- say Street Fighter V, recently -- you also probably know what to expect. Sever errors et al. But here is something surprisingly interesting in the chaos: people forming orderly lines to talk to an NPC, because NPCs can't talk to multiple players at once and players can't phase through one another. It's probably not "fun." It's definitely funny. And, I don't know, kind of interesting? In the same way that rotating a DualShock to pour a glass of orange juice in Heavy Rain is interesting, but, still. And this is even more amusing in the context of a decidedly not Heavy Rain style of game. It's post-apocalyptic wish fulfillment bogged down by real life tedium and I like it. |
New NES emulator displays classic games in 3D Posted: 08 Mar 2016 12:30 PM PST 3DNES, a new web-based emulator for the Nintendo Entertainment System that displays games as if they were made in 3D, has been publicly released in beta form. As you can see in the video above, it isn't always perfect, but man does Dr. Mario and Mega Man look damned impressive; better than some of the 3D Classics available on 3DS even. The emulator currently only runs in Firefox and requires a URL link to an NES ROM. So get your legally dumped ROMs uploaded and give this a spin if you're so inclined. I'll certainly be trying it later tonight. |
Paragon: Backstreet Boy tested, mother approved Posted: 08 Mar 2016 12:00 PM PST Steven recently played Paragon and let us know that he enjoyed it. But, Steven never has been and never will be a teen heartthrob. Some people just aren't Tiger Beat material, bud; it's okay. Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys fame absolutely was Tiger Beat material and he is also playing Paragon. Fortnite too! That's why he's at Epic's headquarters in North Carolina today, sitting on a boss-ass motorcycle thing. This has me wondering what AJ, Howie, Kevin, and Brian are up to today. Probably nothing as good as hanging out, playing some video games. But, Nick's probably not doin' as great as his little bro Aaron, who's still riding high off that time he out-hooped Shaq 16 years ago. |
Friday Night Fights: Elsa Fest 2016 Edition Posted: 08 Mar 2016 11:30 AM PST [Longtime community member Elsa has it a little rough right now, so we want to show our support by doing something she loves: playing video games together. Let's make this week's Friday Night Fights the biggest we can! And feel free to donate some cash to her if you have some to spare. -Darren] One of the founding principles of Destructoid has always been community. Trying to bring fellow gamers together. Comments, CBlogs, Quick Posts, convention meet-ups, NARPS... even the forums, god help us. It's increasingly hard to maintain communities given how fractured and fractious gamers have become in the last couple years, but that just makes it all the more important to highlight the people who have maintained a steady and positive influence. Especially when they're going through hard times. If you've spent any time on Destructoid, you've probably bumped into Elsa. Be it from her comments or her blog, she's been a fixture here for long enough that our Community Manager and Phallus Connoisseur, Mike Martin, looked up to her when he first started here. OG Dtoid, for real. Join date: 01/25/09. No joke. In fact, Elsa was one of the people I looked up to when I started as well. It's hard not to. She's smart, together and not afraid to speak her mind. Whenever someone would go off on an apoplectic fit, she'd be there with a well reasoned, well thought out take on the subject. She was also instrumental in making Friday Night Fights the time-tested staple it's become. So, when she broke the news via CBlog that she's currently dealing with two different kinds of malignant cancer (What? One wasn't enough? Show off), PappaBear/GrumpyDad came to us with an idea: a community-funded gaming care package. Specifically, a PS Vita (possibly with some games or accessories depending on how much we can raise) so she can game on the go. Also, in honor of everything she's given to the community over the years: a really big friggin' party on Friday night. A Friday Night Fights for the record books. A bacchanal of games (and also booze, if that's your thing). |
Gears of War 4 proves Marcus Fenix actually had sex Posted: 08 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PST You might think late-game John Travolta lookalike and longtime Gears of War star Marcus Fenix never made it to pound town on account of being a ghastly, thick-necked meathead, but Fenix did indeed get his dick wet, free of protection, probably bumping that ODB, according to the latest Game Informer cover story. If his perpetual someone-pissed-in-my-cereal -- Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds, I hope -- mug can get it in then there's hope for all of us to get as di-neep as Earl Stevens (yup). The main protagonist of Ge4rs is JD Fenix, Marcus' son, an "idealist who ran away from home at a young age to join the the COG militia only to go AWOL after a classified incident that players will learn more about during the game." He's got Central's blond cut from XCOM 2 (something close to the Brad Pitt Fury look), piercing blue eyes, and some handsome stubble. He looks focus tested to all hell, or like an Instagram model. Basically the modern handsome man ideal (according to western/white beauty staples). He is the Brad Pitt in Fight Club alt machismo to Marcus' Dolph Lundgren. |
Total War: Warhammer pushed to May 24, 2016 Posted: 08 Mar 2016 10:30 AM PST Creative Assembly has delayed the launch of Total War: Warhammer from April 28, 2016 to May 24, 2016 in order to not "rush it," according to creative director Mike Simpson. Always a good thing. "This could be the best Total War game we've ever made," he said. "It's an enormous game and we also want to make absolutely sure reviewers have enough time to play it thoroughly before launch." The studio has also honed in on the system requirements for Warhammer, including a breakdown of what sort of in-game performance players can expect to achieve with their setup. PC Minimum Specifications: [Expected around 15-25 FPS on campaign map and in a 1v1, 20 units vs. 20 units battle, default graphics preset set to "Low"]
(*)PC integrated graphics chipsets require 4GB ram, e.g. Intel HD series PC Recommended Specifications: [Expected around 45-55 FPS on campaign map and in a 1v1, 20 units vs. 20 units battle, default graphics preset set to "High"]
PC 60fps+ Specifications: [Expected 60 FPS+ on campaign map and in a 1v1, 20 units vs. 20 units battle, default graphics preset set to "Ultra"]
Looks like I'll fall somewhere in the lower-middle side of things. Keep in mind, these listings are more of a "guide rather than an absolute" and they're subject to change closer to release. |

'Everything' is a game about being everything Posted: 08 Mar 2016 09:30 AM PST "In Everything, every single thing is a playable character; if you can see it, you can be it." Come again? "The game lets you see the entire universe from the point of view of the thousands of things in it. In other words, there is no distinction between you and the world, or between a level and a character. All these things experience and interact with the world differently." This is an upcoming PlayStation 4 title from David OReilly (The External World) and Damien DiFede, who previously collaborated on the "ambient procedural mountain simulator" Mountain. "If you ever wanted to see what it's like to be a horse, or a paperclip, or the sun, this is for you," says OReilly. "Your main power in the game is Being (there are more but I won't ruin the surprise)." The trailer and screenshots aren't especially informative, but this specific line -- "we developed an entirely new way to create and design levels, which treat objects more like ecosystems, and slightly closer to how they would be in nature" -- has me interested. In general, it sounds more enjoyable to play than Mountain while still retaining some of the same installation-artwork vibes. Everything will be "launching exclusively on PS4 in the future." Rising Storm 2: Vietnam's first gameplay trailer shows airstrikes and wobbly ironsights Posted: 08 Mar 2016 09:00 AM PST During PC Gamer's Weekender streaming event, Antimatter Games and Tripwire Interactive revealed the first gameplay for Rising Storm 2: Vietnam. Titled Boots on the Ground, it shows the new, cleaner animations and the super-shaky ironsight mechanic. The jungles of Vietnam look great in the trailer, and the expected 60's rock 'n roll helps establish a different tone from the previous game. Rising Storm 2: Vietnam also seems much larger in scope, especially when a player calls in an airstrike towards the end. There's no projected release date as of this moment. |
Come get your red hots - Limited 10-year Destructoid shirts on sale Posted: 08 Mar 2016 08:30 AM PST It's been awhile since we did some shirts, so check out our whole new line of Destructoid shirts based on your community feedback! Designed by @elnido. You can customize them a bit too -- each shirt has multiple color and style options. Some of the hoodies have a design on the front and back and some are more minimal death black -- just in time for Spring. Go play. The 10-year anniversary shirt (Next week! 10 Years! Somehow!) will be gone after we celebrate Destructoid's Annual Golden Week, so if you want to collect a little piece of Destructoid history it's the one with the cocks. Yeah, shocker. I'm 13 inside. The shop is powered by Spreadshirt, so if you have an old Spreadshirt credit or find a working coupon on the interwebs (they have seasonal sales all the time) that obviously helps. They take care of everything so we have little say in pricing, but 100% of proceeds go to the artist. Put that boy to work on some more - let us know what you think. |
Wanna roleplay as a rich guy with mommy/daddy issues in Rocket League? Posted: 08 Mar 2016 08:00 AM PST Hi, Batman defenders! Before you start your own Caped Crusade to tell me how wrong I am, know that I'm just teasing. Bats is a'ight. Darren recently reported that the Batmobile is coming to Rocket League while insinuating that Batman probably "probably smashes into small children on the regular." You're not going to be able to commit vehicular manslaughter in everyone's favorite Soccar game, but at least you can pretend you're a moody superhero as you make entertaining GIFs. Since this is designed to hype up the oncoming movie, the DLC pack is called the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Car Pack and also comes with three new antenna flags: one each for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The whole thing will run you $1.99. I'm not sure if those flags are as cool as our Mr. Destructoid one (which is freeeeee), but here's a video to help you decide: |
Sure, we'll take more free Star Wars Battlefront DLC Posted: 08 Mar 2016 07:30 AM PST Former Star Wars Battlefront players may want to pop back in this week for a round or two. DICE added some free content to the game today across all platforms, including a new multiplayer map, Survivors of Endor, that's playable in the larger-scale Walker Assault, Supremacy, and Turning Point modes. It has a different feel to it than the existing Endor map. At least, I didn't feel quite so surrounded. There's also this gorgeous torch-lit, webbed-out cave that serves as a choke point. The new survival mission is Rebel Depot. It's an adaptation of an existing multiplayer map set on Tatooine, so don't expect anything too fancy. You can get a nice look at the (binary) sunset, though! Some Division players already figured out how to be the absolute worst Posted: 08 Mar 2016 07:00 AM PST The Division's opening safehouse is proving to be a far more frustrating experience for some players than you'd ever think imaginable. The culprit? Not an overpowered enemy and not some game-breaking bug. It's a guy standing in the doorway. Mere hours after the game's launch, people have found that players spawning in the first safehouse can't progress if someone just stands in the door. Everyone else is trapped inside, just watching this jamoke wave at them. Seeing how it's launch day and The Division is a highly anticipated game, it seems as if a whole lot of people are either griefing or being griefed right now. Luckily, there's one workaround. It's being reported that if you just continually run at the doorway guy for a few seconds, you'll eventually phase through him. It won't to try pushing him or constantly backing up to squeeze past. You have to just run on the spot until you clip through. Most people probably won't try this method, though. They'll just resign themselves to waiting until that person gets sick of griefing, anger mounting with each passing second. And, then they have to hope that the next person doesn't try their hand at it too. I just hope that The Division's first patch notes include something about a widened door frame. You can block people's progress in The Division by standing in a doorway [Eurogamer] |
Radiant Entertainment bought by Riot Games, puts Rising Thunder on hold Posted: 08 Mar 2016 06:45 AM PST Well, this is some bittersweet news. Radiant Entertainment, the developer behind the excellent-looking minimalist fighting game, Rising Thunder, has been acquired by Riot Games. While the Radiant guys are obviously super talented and I'm excited to think about what they could do with a financial juggernaut like Riot funding them, the acquisition unfortunately means Rising Thunder has to be put on the back burner for now. From Radiant's statement:
I only played a little of Rising Thunder, but I thought it was already shaping up to be something special. Hopefully the developers will be able to get back to it soon. On the plus side, Radiant's other current project, Stonehearth, will continue development as is. Radiant + Riot Games [Radiant Entertainment] |
The Pokemon Center has the Pokemon Trainer Red Nendoroid Posted: 08 Mar 2016 06:30 AM PST That delightful Red Nendoroid is back and his Pokémon are all grown up! The US Pokémon Center is carrying the Champion version of the toy set again today. At $99.99, it's not exactly cheap, but these things rarely if ever are. Despite being a card-carrying member of #TeamBlue, I have to say, I like the look of Venusaur the most out of this group. It's the face. This will hopefully still be up for sale by the time you read this. If not, I'm sure you'll get another chance. Last I heard, the official line was "More inventory will arrive throughout the year." Posted: 08 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PST I've never done meth, but I've watched enough of the hit American show Cops to know what it looks like when someone is under its influence; frantic movements, confusion, and swatting at non-existent bees. That is pretty much what Blood Alloy: Reborn is like, only with a bit of Strider and a whole lot of electro-synth music. |
PlayStation's new promotion sees six games release in seven weeks Posted: 08 Mar 2016 05:30 AM PST Over the course of the next seven weeks, a half dozen games will make their way to Sony platforms for the first time ever. Some will be new releases, some will be PlayStation-exclusives -- it's a bit of everything, really. This promotion has been dubbed the Launch Party 2016, and it starts next week. On March 15, Salt and Sanctuary releases, and the party don't stop until Alienation comes out on April 26. Here's the full Launch Party schedule: |
Frogwares' Cthulhu game is still alive, now called The Sinking City Posted: 08 Mar 2016 05:00 AM PST Well, this is awkward. When it was announced Cyanide is making an official Call of Cthulhu game, we’d just assumed that it meant the previous one in development at Frogwares was no more. Turns out we were wrong. The Sherlock Holmes developer has announced The Sinking City, an open-world Lovecraftian investigation game. The art given for it looks absolutely amazing, with tentacles and floods and all that good stuff. The game is already set to be shown off too, as it is due to be unleashed on GDC next week. It will be interesting to see how The Sinking City differentiates from Call of Cthulhu, as both are investigation-based Lovecraft games. I can’t wait to see more of The Sinking City because while the art is great, we don’t actually know much else about the game. I’m definitely excited for this one! |
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth adding seven Digimon this week Posted: 08 Mar 2016 04:30 AM PST On Thursday, March 10, Media Vision and Bandai Namco are dropping seven additional Digimon into Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita. After updating the game, you'll be able to unlock these characters by clearing some missions:
Until then, join me in getting stupidly amped up by the original show's theme song. But for productivity's sake, don't dip into the wikis. All it took was one link and now here I am with a near-browser-breaking row of unread tabs. Go on, Firefox. Just crash! Save me from myself. |
Oh goodie, Thief is getting a movie Posted: 08 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PST Thief, the hardcore stealth series known for its subtle, quiet tone and open-ended gameplay, is getting a movie adaptation. Why? Beats me. According to The Hollywood Reporter, production company Straight Up Films bought the rights to Thief from Square Enix and has already gotten to work on the script. The film is to be penned by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes, the people behind Hangman and Broken which both received very mixed receptions. Sounds perfect for a videogame adaptation! At the risk of sounding cynical, it really feels like Square Enix saw the Assassin’s Creed movie getting attention and flung its only sneaky-hooded character out there to ride the wave. The only problem with that is Thief is a fundamentally different experience from the more action-packed Assassin’s Creed, and as such probably won’t make as clean a switch to the big screen. Still, I’m going to remain optimistic. As bad as Thief 2014 was I still like the series, so maybe they can pull it off. Maybe. If the stars align and the Gods of Olympus deign it worthy. Possibly. God, I hope so. 'Thief' Video Game Series to Get Big-Screen Treatment [The Hollywood Reporter] |
Valkyria Chronicles Remastered set for May 17 western release on PS4 Posted: 08 Mar 2016 03:30 AM PST Valkyria Chronicles Remastered has been a long time coming. Available on PC (without the Remastered qualifier) since late 2014, it finally hit Japanese PlayStation 4s last month, but all we knew up until now was the western release was slated for spring. Now we know more; it will be available for European and North and South American PS4s on May 17. Those who played the original already know what to expect with the remaster, but Sega released a new trailer to give more of an idea for how it works to newbies. It's mostly a turn-based strategy affair, but it has action leanings thrown in as well. It's definitely an odd genre twist, but it works well. |
Which version of Pokemon Generation 1 did you get? Posted: 08 Mar 2016 03:00 AM PST The original Pokémon was recently re-released into the wild by way of the 3DS eShop, which gives players a hefty choice of selecting any version they want. Instead of swapping carts around you can simply buy all three, and have at it with a quick Home button press. We recently covered Red, Yellow, and Blue, and many of you voiced your preference in the comments, but let's have an official final showdown to determine the most beloved version. As for me, it's still Red! It was the first version I picked up at launch due to the cool Charizard cover, and it's one I prefer to this day. |
Sniper Elite 4 is 'built from the ground up' for current-gen Posted: 08 Mar 2016 02:30 AM PST I never would've guessed Rebellion had so many Sniper Elite titles in it, but people keep buying them, so the studio's output has been that series and not much else these past several years (aside from a reportedly badass Battlezone reboot for PlayStation VR that I'd really like to try one of these days). It seems video game makers and players will never completely let go of World War II. The next entry in this line of shooters is Sniper Elite 4, which picks back up with Karl Fairburne fighting alongside the Italian resistance movement in 1943. For those of you who felt Sniper Elite III lacked ambition, Rebellion describes this as the first one designed specifically with current systems in mind and says it has the "largest and most diverse environments." Stunning area to draw from, for sure. You won't necessarily get a sense of that heightened scale from this teaser trailer, but the studio has shared a few extra bullet points about what to expect: the campaign supports up to two players, there will be dedicated co-op and competitive multiplayer modes, and the game is due out this year. The stakes this time around? Could. Not. Be. Higher. "If his mission fails, there will be no Operation Overlord, no D-Day landings, and no Victory in Europe." And that means none of your favorite cereals like Fruity Pebbles or Honeycomb or even Cinnamon Toast Crunch. What an unpleasant thought. |
Mega Yarn Yoshi is coming back in stock soon, still 'extremely limited' Posted: 08 Mar 2016 02:00 AM PST There's almost always an exception to any given rule, and Mega Yarn Yoshi is it for amiibo. For the most part in the past few waves, Nintendo has been doing a good job at providing ample stock for their customers. There are store exclusives that have been on sale for weeks on end, and hell, even a figure that dropped its exclusivity. But Mega Yarn Yoshi unfortunately was one of those "limited stock" items, and sold out quickly in just a few hours nationwide. It appears as if Toys"R"Us still has the exclusive on it, but it will re-appear in their stores on March 20 -- it just...might sell out immediately again, so take heed. In regards to the title they never said the phrase "extremely limited," they said "eggs-tremely limited." You got me. ToysRUs[Twitter] |
Don't install the newest Nvidia driver, it's breaking PCs Posted: 08 Mar 2016 01:30 AM PST [Update: Nvidia has released a new driver, 364.51, which it claims solves the problems caused by the faulty driver. However, the reception to it on reddit has been mixed, with some people reporting the exact same problems as before. I recommend holding off on updating for a few days at least just so you can get a good idea as to how it's working for most people.] If you’re an Nvidia graphics card user, you might want to hold off on installing the latest driver. The 364.47 driver was released yesterday, and is meant to include optimisations for The Division, Hitman, Need for Speed, Ashes of the Singularity and Rise of the Tomb Raider. The drivers can also severely damage your computer. Blue screens, failing to boot up Windows, restart loops, losing sound, graphical artifacting and even burned out cards are all problems which are being reported by users on various sites. It doesn’t seem to be specific to one brand or generation of card, either. Nvidia has released a statement saying that the problems lie in the express installation settings, and that it is “actively investigating the issue”. I am personally running the driver with my GTX 980 on a non-upgraded installation of Windows 10 64-bit, installed using express installation, and have found my entire PC now locks up after a few minutes of The Division. Enough people having more serious issues for me to suggest you wait until Nvidia releases a fixed version, or roll back your drivers if you’ve been unlucky enough to already install it. Review in Progress: Tom Clancy's The Division Posted: 08 Mar 2016 12:30 AM PST As previously announced, Ubisoft didn't give out codes for The Division in advance, so there I was on launch day, pre-loaded copy in hand, eyes bloodshot after playing it all night. Don't expect our final verdict for several more days until we've combed through everything the game has to offer, but for now, here's some early thoughts to help people decide whether or not to pick up a pre-order. |
Xbox One owners will eventually be able to buy 360 games on the actual console Posted: 08 Mar 2016 12:00 AM PST I know it sounds weird, but bear with me. Right now, the Xbox One backward compatibility feature has worked out to the point where most folks can merely download their existing library on their current console with little fuss. But the game count is getting bigger each month, and at some point, having to locate new titles by way of the web marketplace isn't going to cut it. Microsoft has picked up on this, and announced a new initiative for the Xbox One preview program -- soon, members will be able to simply find them on the new storefront. That's it! It's a simple little addition, but a welcome one. Xbox Forums [Xbox] |
