Nintendo's $356M theme park will be ready by 2020

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 03:00 PM PST

Surprised it's been nearly a year since we got word Nintendo would partner with Universal Studios on a theme park in Japan.

The world's first theme park based on Nintendo properties (I did win a Mario plush in a shady carnival game somewhere once...) will be contained within Universal Studios Japan and will, understandably, be Super Mario-focused, according to Sankei.

Universal is dumping ¥40 billion into the Nintendo land, which will be ready ahead of Tokyo's duties hosting the 2020 Olympics, though Universal Studios Japan is in Osaka, 300 miles southwest of Tokyo. That's an hour on a plane or almost four on a train. Plan accordingly.

Actually, have you ever been the Olympics? Would you ever want to go to the Olympics? Who attends the Olympics? I don't even watch it on TV, though I supposed I can appreciate the pageantry four seconds at a time in GIF highlights because we're in the modern age. But I can't imagine making a trip out of going to the Olympics. Then again I know someone who just spent a night in Arizona to watch a meaningless Spring Training baseball game, so who am I to tell rich people what to do with their money (give it to me, please).

Recent Nintendo classics are finally heavily discounted on Amazon

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 02:30 PM PST

Nintendo games can be something of a double-edged sword. Having been developed by Nintendo, they're usually very good. But, Nintendo also has a habit of rarely discounting its titles. That means you're going to have to pay for quality, even years down the road.

The one shining beacon is the Nintendo Selects program, which basically ushers a handful of recent classics into a permanently reduced-price. That's happening next week, and all those games just went up on Amazon for pre-order.

Every game listed here has the price point of $19.99 and releases on March 11. What's more, if you're an Amazon Prime member, they're all marked down to $15.99. The discount shows up once you get through to the checkout page. Finally, some of Nintendo's best at an affordable price.

Way of the Samurai 3 is next in line for Steam

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 02:00 PM PST

Following the PC port of 2012's Way of the Samurai 4, Ghostlight has geared up to bring over another installment, Way of the Samura 3, which the publisher calls one of its "most-requested Steam releases in recent years." The Sengoku-era action-RPG should arrive on the platform in "the very near future."

"[W]e've been hard at work on the PC port for quite a while now, and we're not far away from release," noted Ghostlight. "We should be starting our closed beta shortly, and assuming everything goes as expected with that then we'll be ready to announce a release date very soon after."

I've never touched this series before, but I'm consistently fascinated by everything I see. Case in point:

It sounds like some folks bought Way of the Samurai 4 in the hope that there would be more to come for PC, so it's nice to hear its predecessor is finally making it over as well. Senpai noticed.

Let's take a soothing break with 'The Joy of Mario Making'

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 01:00 PM PST

If we have even a halfway decent reason to talk about Bob Ross around here, you better believe one of us will seize that opportunity. The endearing, soft-spoken artist and television show host has been parodied countless times before, but this is one of the better spoofs I've come across.

In "The Joy of Mario Making" from A Dumb Thing, we're taught to believe in ourselves, trust our instincts, and accept "mistakes" as happy accidents while creating levels in Super Mario Maker.

I'd love to see this concept adapted into a full-length series with genuine level-making advice.

House of Cards continues gaming cameos with extra indie cred

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 12:30 PM PST

For a show about king-making, fraught alliances, and betrayal, Agar.io is a pretty good fit for Netflix's original show House of Cards, which seemingly filled a lot of the internet's collective binging bandwidth this weekend (while I was mainlining five back-to-back episodes of Columbo at a time).

It's probably more thematically appropriate (and stinks less of product placement) than some of House of Cards' other video game cameos, including Killzone, the PlayStation Vita, and Monument Valley. And it got appropriate dialogue to match. It's probably more realistic for the president to run into an Agar.io fan than a PlayStation Vita, too. When's the last time you ran into one of those in the wild? It's mostly a Lumines machine for me these days and I actually can't remember the last time I saw another one.

Anyways, I wrote about trying to start a pacifist utopia in Agar.io once and would be delighted if you read it, as it was a bit of fun.

Fulcrum is one slick-looking snowboarding game

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 12:00 PM PST

I'm hurting for more snowboarding games and I know I'm not alone. This one, Fulcrum, deserves a spot on our radar. It's a collaboration between Phosfiend Systems (Fract OSC) and designer Ben Swinden, who says, "We'd been thinking about for a long time how to take those things we love about snowboarding and turn it into a video game somehow."

Fulcrum is set on an endless mountain, but players have control over the flow of scenery. Areas loop until the player collects an orb, at which point the oncoming terrain shifts into something new. And it's not just for show -- besides giving snowboarders freedom to explore until they're ready to move on, this mechanic plays into what are essentially environmental puzzles.

You can see how it all works in this prototype video with developer commentary:

According to Swinden, the team hopes to appeal to two types of players: those who "want to just chill out and relax and have this meditative, slow experience" and also those who crave "more challenging, more exciting jumps and things." I'm really feeling that music by Mogi Grumbles.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 3DS theme is coming

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 11:30 AM PST

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD just launched on Wii U, and Nintendo is doing a decent job promoting it. In addition to the Wolf Link and Midna Super Mario Maker character, there's also allegedly going to be a special Twilight Picross game that will launch with the My Nintendo service.

Oh, and there's also going to be a 3DS theme, which will arrive soon in Japan, and likely everywhere else worldwide in the coming weeks. This official video from Nintendo will give you the full rundown.

Lil' Flip used the #RIPLionhead hashtag almost six years ago

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 11:15 AM PST

Nas is rap's Nastradamus, but is Lil' Flip video games' Nostradamus? Whether he knew it or not, the Houston rapper was almost six years early in predicting the latest possible studio shuttering.

Today, Microsoft cancelled Fable Legends and revealed it is in talks about closing the UK-based developer. Almost immediately, Twitter was filled with people expressing their sympathies, followed by the hashtag #RIPLionhead.

But, if you scroll all the way back to the first use of the hashtag, it came way before this morning's news. On November 9, 2010, Lil' Flip (of "This is the Way We Ball" and "Game Over" fame) sent out the tweet that's embedded below. I don't understand most of it, but #RIPLionhead is right in the middle.

At time of writing, Lil' Flip's tweet had zero retweets and zero favorites.

The Cthulhu Mythos is officially coming to Pathfinder

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PST

[Welcome to Tabletoid! I'm going to make an effort to write about tabletop games (board, pen and paper, and the like) here on Destructoid. I'm but one man, so I can't cover every little thing that comes out. Maybe Darren will take a break from science to help out. If not, it'll mostly be what catches my eye.]

Between Pathfinder and Dungeons & Dragons, it's not uncommon to find creatures and scenarios that were clearly influenced by the work of H.P. Lovecraft. If you wanted to take a deep dive into that universe, you could go straight to Call of Cthulhu, the first RPG that really used that setting to its full potential. But some of us nerds like to combine our swords 'n sorcery with the existential awareness of Elder Gods looming in the corners of reality.

Sandy Petersen (author of the Call of Cthulhu game) and his son Arthur saw this niche and are creating a book that will bring Lovecraft to Pathfinder, fittingly called...Sandy Petersen's Cthulhu Mythos for Pathfinder. I guess I didn't really need that preceding sentence. Petersen Games' Kickstarter launched today and already reached its initial goal. The book will come with plot hooks, campaign starters, and a huge bestiary with Mythos monsters that have never been in Pathfinder before.

If you're rich person and can spend more than I'll make this month on role-playing, you can help Petersen make the backstory and abilities for one of the Big Nasties in the book. The miniatures that you can get by pledging look just the right amount of disgusting. I wouldn't mind using those for other games, too. Just gotta find a way to incorporate alien beings in my most recent D&D campaign. I don't imagine that'd be too hard.

Anyway, cool stuff. I'm a big Lovecraft dork, especially if it's used as more than just window dressing. Evidently there are plenty of people who feel the same.

The Division's Gold Edition available for sale again

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 10:45 AM PST

Something interesting happened over the weekend in robot-deal-hunting land. For a short period of time, we noticed that retailers were no longer carrying copies of Tom Clancy's The Division Gold Edition. At least, not physical copies anyway.

During this brief weekend window, you could only grab this super duper edition by buying digital, no matter the platform of choice. This is noteworthy because it's becoming a trend for publishers and retailers to do SKU juggling while they switch from Day One and Pre-Order editions as a game near releases, further confusing gamers who just want to buy a damn game.

But of course if your platform of choice is PC, things are actually relatively straightforward since the game, no matter its edition, has continuously been available for pre-order. You'll also actually be able to save 20% off The Division's Gold Edition and receive the Uplay key immediately after purchase for tonight's release when the servers go live.

Here's all the deals (and non-deals) for The Division's Gold... and uh, non-Gold Editions as of writing:

Gold Edition PC

Gold Edition Console

  • Best Buy - $99.99 (PS4)
Includes $10 rewards bonus, works with GCU for $20 off
  • Best Buy - $99.99 (Xbox One)
Ditto on the $10 bonus, works with GCU for $20 off
  • Amazon OOS

Standard Edition Deals

PC

Console

For those not up to speed, the Gold Edition is just bundling in the $39.99 Season Pass with the base game. Of course, the future content is far from being released and details on the forthcoming DLCs/expansions are still thin. What about those Day One editions at select retailers? That just means they don't include the pre-order bonus, which at this point you shouldn't care about.

If you're buying digital for the consoles, there's no real reason to buy from GameStop or Amazon versus the platform's respective online store service, unless you carry store credit at either retailer (FYI: Prime's 20% off deal isn't valid on digital content).

PC gamers planning to pick up the Season Pass eventually may as well grab Green Man Gaming's deal for 20% off and knock $8 off the Season Pass price. Pre-loading is available at all retailers as of writing. Interesting to note for those who care: GMG has its key source for The Division listed as coming from Ubisoft, a departure of the previous "authorized distributor" from weeks back, and thus pricing is now more reasonable and in line with what most other authorized retailers are selling the game at.

Ash's room in Unreal 4 is just as tacky as the real thing

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 10:30 AM PST

This newest "X game in Y engine" video comes by way of Jarlan Perez, who recrafted Ash's room in Unreal Engine 4. It's pretty sleek overall, except for the fact that Ash leaves his balls all over the table. Can we assume that this is his room after he beats the Elite Four? Probably, because if you look closely you can see his box of badges.

Overall his room has nothing on Nate's from Yo-Kai Watch. He has a depressed ghost bat living in his closet!

Harmonix drops Mad Catz as Rock Band 4's co-publisher

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 09:45 AM PST

Last spring, little more than one year ago today, it was announced that Rock Band 4 was happening and that Mad Catz would co-publish the game alongside Harmonix. Mad Catz would be responsible for manufacturing the hardware, Harmonix would develop the game, and they would presumably split the distribution costs. Five months removed from Rock Band 4's launch, Harmonix has had enough of that partnership.

In a press release sent out this afternoon, Harmonix revealed that Performance Designed Products (PDP) is Rock Band 4's new co-publisher. Further, Harmonix says that it has a "major Rock Band 4 feature update coming this fall," and that new hardware will accompany it. It's just a presumption at this point, but it kind of sounds like the game is getting re-released in a more polished form.

As for Mad Catz, Harmonix didn't outwardly say that it severed ties. But, the signing of PDP in the role that Mad Catz originally served makes it sound as if the business relationship has been dissolved. We've reached out to Harmonix representatives to confirm that this is the case, but we haven't yet heard back.

In February, Mad Catz went through a tumultuous few days where it saw three board members resign before posting its most recent fiscal results; during that investors meeting, it was also announced that the company was laying off one-third of its staff.

In hindsight, it's unknown if those layoffs occurred because this partnership was coming to an end, or if Harmonix terminated it more recently (possibly because of the situation Mad Catz is in). It's sort of a chicken-and-egg type of thing. It's also unclear if the co-publishing relationship between Harmonix and Mad Catz had an end date, or if Harmonix just dissolved it.

Whatever the case may be, Rock Band is heading in a different direction -- a direction that doesn't include Mad Catz for the first time since 2010. PDP will be the new face of Rock Band's hardware, at least for the time being. Later this year, we'll find out exactly how it plans to change the game's instruments.

Review: Corsair VOID Stereo Gaming Headset

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 09:00 AM PST

Some people spend hundreds of pounds/dollars[insert your denomination here] on a headset. Me? I spend enough on consoles and subscriptions and games and t-shirts and Pop Vinyl figures as it is. So while I’m content enough with mid-range sets, this often means I find myself compromising on quality or comfort in order to ensure I don’t have to sell a kidney to finance them (#firstworldproblems, I know).

Also? Expensive things get broken in my house. Just ask my husband what happened to my limited edition Silent Hill 2 figurine. Or ask my boy what happened to my Xbox One Elite controller (this happened earlier today. I am still so, so mad, you guys).

Here are all of The Division's Achievements

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 08:30 AM PST

Here we are, just hours away from The Division's launch. A lot of people are rightfully excited, especially after they had a chance with the beta to see what the game's all about. Expectations are high all around, but no one may have higher expectations than Ubisoft itself.

One of the last pieces of information to trickle out about The Division is what the Achievement list looks like. Now that has been uploaded to the platforms' servers, so it's out in the wild through whatever Internet magic makes that possible. Disappointingly, there are no math references. But, there's some Judge Dredd. A little Judge Dredd goes a long way.

A good number of the Achievements are dedicated to doing X thing Y times, which is a tired format. Still, killing 20 rogue agents sounds like an accomplishment to celebrate, even if it fits that mold. Deconstructing 100 items does not.

That gripe aside, finishing all of the missions at level 30 on hard difficulty stands out as likely the toughest that The Division has to offer. Either that, or maybe completing a mission at level 30 without anyone being downed or dying. Need some competent teammates for that.

Below are all 50 of The Division's Achievements. PlayStation users have a platinum waiting for them if they can nab all the other Trophies. Be wary of the secret ones at the bottom of the list, as they have some progression spoilers.

David Hayter is back in the booth doing Metal Gear Things

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 08:15 AM PST

[Update: Looks like Paul Eiding (Colonel Campbell) challenged Hayter to record an insult in Snake's voice. But let's be honest, Hayter knew what he was doing here. Thanks VG247 and Gene Jacket!]

Start your rumor engine! David Hayter (the voice behind Solid Snake/Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid 1-4) just casually tweeted that he's "back in the booth," accompanied by #SnakeMystery. I know that sounds fake as heck, so here it is:

See? I'm not a liar. No idea what he's tweeting about. It could be Konami trying to win back some fans by repairing relations with Hayter. Or it could be a Metal Gear-themed mobile game. Or it could be an HD re-re-remaster of one of the previous games, and they wanted him to re-do a few lines. Or it's nothing. But it's fun to speculate. What'ch'all think he's talking about?

Aku Aku!

This custom Crash Bandicoot PS2 is making me want to boot up the original trilogy again. Oh, and Crash Team Racing, and Crash Bash. This was a really good series at one point! It's sad that it's potential was squandered.

Alas, I can still gaze at this creation from Vadu Amka and dream what might have been. Instead of an Uncharted special edition PS4, we could have had this. Will Sony announce a new Crash this year? It's possible!

Here's all the datamined info for The Division

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 07:30 AM PST

Folks are already anticipating that the RPG elements of The Division will keep them busy for weeks, and to that end, dataminers have been hard at work uncovering items and missions buried within the game. Note that as of the time of this writing, the retail version will not go live until midnight tonight, Eastern time.

Anyway, those folks who have gotten their hands on the disc and digital editions have figured out tons of new info, which can be accessed on the following spreadsheet, as well as this wiki, and this database. There's even some DLC info in there, as well as references to possible cut content, so, spoiler alert.

For the vast majority of you out there, you can likely roll your eyes at all these spoilers and plan to go in blind. But I know a lot of people are going to go in guns blazing with a hardcore perspective and a group, ready to tear into the endgame as quickly as possible. This post is for you.

Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Ingenious Magearna is hitting Japanese theaters on July 16, and you can get a glimpse at what to expect here in the newest trailer. I kind of skip around Pokémon films, but I may actually catch this one at some point this year.

We see plenty of Volcanion, but Magearna is merely teased. Is anyone else getting serious Attack on Titan Trost vibes from the city featured in the movie?

Xbox has the rights to The Division's DLC exclusivity

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 06:45 AM PST

The past several years have seen the two biggest platform-holders, Sony and Microsoft, competing for rights to the most popular games' post-launch content. Call of Duty has always been the most alluring draw, and it recently switched from Xbox to PS4 timed-exclusivity. Destiny is another notable example, as Activision and Bungie also sided with Sony.

Microsoft isn't getting shut out, however. Just today, Ubisoft announced that the first two Division add-ons will be Xbox exclusives for 30 days. Underground and Survival are scheduled for later in the summer; whenever they're set for release, tack on one month to get the PC and PS4 dates. The final DLC pack, Last Stand, arrives this winter to a simultaneous launch across all platforms.

Timed-exclusivity is never the most consumer-friendly route, but it's a reality of video game business in 2016. At least this example won't prevent people from enjoying a game, like was the case with Rise of the Tomb Raider. It just holds their DLC back for a while, which feels like a wholly less egregious offense.

If you're committed to getting The Division, but are unsure of the platform you want it on, maybe this news will nudge you in a certain direction. Maybe, just maybe, it'll inspire you to pick up an Xbox One. After all, that's the reason Microsoft plunked down cash to make this deal happen.

Just Cause 3 now has quicker load times

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 06:30 AM PST

I'm not interested in the DLC for Just Cause 3 yet, even if it does come with a freakin' jetpack wingsuit, but more improvements to the core game? Bring 'em! The latest update is now live on PC (and, in a shocking twist, has already been available for a few days now on consoles):

  • Reduced initial loading time and in-game loading screens by 20-50%
  • Fixed several memory leaks resulting in crashes
  • Reduced a number of random crashes
  • Improved streaming of game world
  • Some performance optimizations related to hitches and stuttering
  • Implemented DLC system in preparation of the Air, Land and Sea packages

Quicker loading is the motivation I need to get back in there and wrap up the story and side missions. If you've exhausted that content and want more, note that the Sky Fortress add-on (pictured above) is supposed to be out tomorrow, March 8 for expansion pass holders. The full release will happen a week later, on March 15. It's $11.99 as a standalone and $24.99 with the other two packs.

Super Meat Boy Wii U release window, port studio confirmed

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PST

Team Meat legend Tommy Refenes took to Twitter to spread the news that Super Meat Boy would be hitting the Wii U in the near future, as confirmed by a recent Nintendo Direct. He notes that the developer tasked with the port is "wrapping it up," and that we should see the full release "in a couple of months."

Oh, and there's another tidbit that's been confirmed -- Blitworks will be handling the Wii U port. They're the same folks that handled ports of Don't Starve, Fez, Bastion, Spelunky, and the PS4 and Vita Meat Boy releases. I uh...I'm going to dip again for this one!

Garden Warfare 2's first free DLC drops tomorrow

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 05:30 AM PST

This week, there's almost certainly going to be a big dropoff in the number of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 players who stick with Rose because they like to top the scoreboards. And thank goodness for that. PopCap is releasing a major update on Tuesday, March 8 with a new multiplayer map, more missions for the hub world, and much-needed balance adjustments to characters like Rose.

The all-seeing, all-knowing plant class is being "completely re-tuned" to fit into her originally intended support role. That means lower health, less effective homing capabilities for her primary attack, and a reduction to her Time Snare ability, among other changes. With this update, PopCap is also touching up several other characters like the Imp (more health) and Chomper (less spammy Goop).

As for the new Team Vanquish map, it's a refresh of Garden Center, which was a staple of the original Garden Warfare. This new "Zomburbified" version for Garden Warfare 2 is called Aqua Center.

The update will hit PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on Tuesday. Here are the full notes:

March 2016, Garden Warfare 2 Tuning/Balance Notes

New Features

  • Added new co-op/team vanquish map "Aqua Center" which may seem familiar, yet completely different!
  • Added night version of the Great White North map to the Turf Takeover Playlist
  • Added Hide n' Find missions to Backyard Battleground
  • Added Bot & Pot Missions to Backyard Battleground
  • Added unique character variant images to group HUD
  • World Options now shows all friends playing the game, not just the joinable ones
  • Added classic setting in options to change primary fire button (PS4 Only)
  • Added Aim Sensitivity slider to now allow more precise control over aim speed (for PC this is broken up into both mouse and gamepad sensitivity)
  • Added ability to select between hold button to aim or toggle button to Aim
  • Added kick player option to the in-game scoreboard for easy access (player hosted modes only)
  • Added difficulty to Pause Menu for some game modes
  • Game Now defaults to common chat in Private Matches
  • Added ability to view scoreboard while vanquished

Critical Fixes

  • Reduced length of round timer between rounds in Multiplayer matches
  • Imp now properly earns XP when in Mech
  • Players can now see other players’ Backyard customizations when visiting their Backyard
  • Players can now see stats on other players stats boards when visiting their Backyard
  • Improved audio for garlic drone primary weapon
  • Setting HUD to "Light" now also hides XP Meter
  • Major improvements to hit reaction "flinching" animations
  • A plethora of quality & bug fixes

Tuning/Balance Notes

Overall

  • Improved regeneration upgrade for all characters
  • Re-tuned all hit reactions for both players and AI to reduce the flinching effect even more

Rose:

  • Completely re-tuned Rose class, bringing her back into playing as a support role
  • Reduced Rose’s health
  • Major changes to her homing abilities, ineffective at range, requires player to lead target in order to land more hits
  • Slightly reduced rate of fire for Magic Thistles
  • Significantly reduced length a victim is trapped in Time SnareChanged how Goatify ability works so that damage does not break Goatify, creating a more predictable and less jarring experience and lowered time as a goat
  • Slowed down rose variants (Fire, Ice) when charging their weapons to make them more vulnerable

Citron:

  • Slightly decreased the Party Citron laser damage

Corn:

  • We needed to improve Corn's ability to be a front-line fighter so we increased his health and also improved his long range damage
  • Reduced Party Corn's damage output

Chomper:

  • Decreased the digestion time after a chomp escape (i.e. your victim got away using anti-chomp ability like jackhammer)
  • Brought Chompers regeneration delay to parity with all other playable characters
  • Fixed a bug where Chomp Thing’s health regeneration didn’t match his weapon description. He now regenerates health slightly sooner and faster than default
  • Increased Unicorn Chomper’s Rainbow Warp cooldown time
  • Increased goop cooldown so it couldn't be spammed quite as much

Cactus:

  • Zen Cactus was too damaging and needed some damage and reload adjustments

Imp:

  • Imps tuning focused on ensuring he had a bit more survivability outside of his mech, and also improved his primary weapon slightly
  • Increased Imp health
  • Fixed a bug where the Imp couldn’t receive damage while he is making his Z-Mech phone call (he's now only invulnerable when the beam of light appears)
  • Reduced Party Imp's damage output

Super Brainz:

  • Slight cooldown reduction to Super Ultra Ball and Super Multi Ball abilities
  • Minor speed improvement to Turbo Twister but at the cost of decreased his armor while in Turbo Twister
  • Removed the decay from Toxic Brainz legendary meter to make it more useful
  • Damage reduction to Party Brainz

Captain Deadbeard:

  • We wanted to bring Captain Deadbeard closer to damage parity with Cactus, but just slightly below since he also benefits from his close range scatter shot
  • Made some movement speed improvements to his barrel when unlit
  • Made some damage reductions to Captain Partyman

Pokemon Go is getting a field test beta in Japan

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 05:00 AM PST

After a no-show at GDC, Niantic Labs has announced that testing for the app is going forward for select participants...in Japan. Of course.

All you have to do is have an Android or iOS device, go to the official site, register, and...live in Japan. Later this month the event will actually kick off, and it will have an NDA attached to it, though we can probably expect some leaks and information to come out of it at that time anyway.

Niantic has noted that it will be expanded to other regions later in the year, though the app itself still doesn't even have a release window.

Dataminer finds evidence of a My Nintendo exclusive Twilight Princess Picross

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 04:30 AM PST

A dataminer named Cellenseres has found evidence of a new Picross game. It's based on The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and will reportedly arrive on March 31, as a reward for the upcoming My Nintendo service. If it was a bonus for registering Twilight or merely a signup bonus to get people to use it, it would make perfect sense.

This leak looks pretty airtight all said, but we'll have to wait for the My Nintendo program to roll out to tell for sure.

Valve announces free VR experience 'The Lab,' set in Portal universe

Valve's public relations is so bizarre. Where most publishers will send over 1000-word hypertext press releases with screenshots and videos, Valve is keen to just give us four sentences in plain text. And we still write about it! Because Valve is Valve. Here's the latest news from the PC juggernaut in its entirety.

Valve has announced plans to debut "The Lab," a compilation of new VR experiments, at next week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA. Set in a pocket universe of Aperture Science, "The Lab" offers multiple ways to enjoy room-scale VR. It will be offered free of charge via Steam this spring. More information will be made available next week at GDC.

Valve has been going in fairly hard on the virtual reality stuff lately, so it makes sense to incorporate one of its most beloved franchises. As a free title, The Lab is probably more of a proof of concept than anything else, collecting bite-sized experiences to show off what virtual reality is capable of providing.

Hey man...have you ever seen Minecraft...on Unreal 4?!

Posted: 07 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PST

I'm starting to feel ridiculous writing all these Unreal Engine 4 posts. I mean, on one hand, they're so easy to do, almost to the point where it's not worth it. The common criticism is that they constantly just reference existing material, and don't attempt to actually create anything new. But as a modder at heart, and someone who grew up in the '90s PC era, I have a soft spot for homages. After all, this is still an original work, even if it's taking a piece of something else. So here's Minecraft in Unreal Engine 4 -- it looks noticeably better.

Speaking of that series, I fully expect a Minecraft 2.0 announcement from Microsoft in the near future. That property didn't come cheap, and it can hype it up and support the original game simultaneously over the course of multiple years, just like Notch did.

It's unknown if this series will ever get a follow-up, and developer Klei is currently hard at work with Don't Starve: Shipwrecked.
