Marin from Link's Awakening is joining the cast of Hyrule Warriors, Nintendo announced this evening during the company's Hyrule Warriors Legends panel at WonderCon in Los Angeles.

The red-haired singer will debut as part of the Link's Awakening-themed DLC pack that is scheduled to release sometime this summer for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of the game.

Sega JRPG 7th Dragon III Code: VFD launches in July

Posted: 26 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PDT

It seems like every Japanese role-playing game under the sun is coming out this summer, and Sega's 7th Dragon III Code: VFD is no different. The Nintendo 3DS-exclusive dungeon crawler is coming to the Americas on July 12, Sega announced (it seems accidentally) earlier this week.

Sega released the title in Japan last October, but has yet to announce any plans to bring it to Europe.

7th Dragon III Code: VFD takes place in an apocalyptic near-future where dragons have taken over the planet and the world's only hope are a group of time-travelling video game employees.

For more thoughts on the JRPG, check out Brett Makedonski's preview from Tokyo Game Show.

Lorne Lanning's plans for the Oddworld series include Foxxcon allegories

Posted: 26 Mar 2016 10:00 AM PDT

I was a few minutes late for my appointment with Lorne Lanning, twisted father of the Oddworld series. My last appointment had run long, so I made my way to the same hotel where I saw Starr Mazer DSP, embarrassed that I had kept him waiting. When I finally approached him, glazed in the awkward sweat that comes with rushing somewhere, he greeted me with a sly grin and the words "Thank you for your Mudokon voices, Zack! Good to meet you." I hadn't realized that my PR contact had told Lorne that I contributed my voice to Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty when Just Add Water offered fans a chance to play a Mudokon. This disarmed me slightly, but I could tell my tardiness wasn't anything to worry about.

"Can you do a Glukkon voice? Let me hear it," he requested. I told him I probably could but would need to practice. It also wouldn't be ethical for me to review the next game, Oddworld: Soulstorm (a remake of Abe's Exoddus), if I was going to be providing a voice. "We'll figure that out later!" he said, with a wave of his hand.

Since we hadn't started the interview proper, I took the time to tell him about a way his games had impacted me as a child. When I was about seven or eight, I was playing the original Oddworld when my mother received a phone call relaying news of my great grandmother's death. At the time, I hadn't known the subject of the call, but saw that my mother was openly weeping. To cheer her up, I pointed at the game, saying "Look mom! I can make Abe fart!" and made it happen over and over. My childish brain thought that no one could cry when seeing the magic of a fart occur, but my attempts fell flat. As I, now a 25-year-old person, regaled this tale to Lorne, he laughed throughout but said it made him feel old.

Fallout 4's Automatron DLC is better if you play as the Silver Shroud

Posted: 26 Mar 2016 07:30 AM PDT

Reactions to Fallout 4's first piece of DLC, Automatron, have been mixed. Jordan was cool on the experience, enjoying some of the new locations, but was disappointed by a fairly short run time and that the DLC only seemed to account for characters specifically specced towards it. Personally, as a big fan of clunky '50s robots, and with a workbench stocked to the rafters with glue, fiber optics, and steel just waiting to be turned into an army of loyal kill-bots, I loved it.

I have a feeling I would loved it more if I'd been wearing my Silver Shroud costume though.

To go hand in hand with the pulp vibe of the DLC, players who confront the Mechanist wearing the Shroud's trench coat and scarf are treated to special dialog responses and options. It's silly, dumb, and exactly the kind of thing I love about the series. Fallout is at it's best when it can make you laugh at the post-apocalypse.

You can watch the standoff between the two hammy, pretend comic book characters in the video above thanks to FluffyNinjaLlama (spoiler warnings obviously in effect).

Senran Kagura creator's new Vita game debuts in July

Posted: 26 Mar 2016 06:05 AM PDT

Uppers, the latest PlayStation Vita brawler from Senran Kagura producer Kenichiro Takaki, appears to have a new release date. According to a (now removed) listing from Japanese retailer Rakuten Books, the action game is coming to Japan on July 14.

Marvelous initially planned to release the title on April 21, but announced plans last month to delay its launch date for an indefinite period of time due to discouraging pre-order numbers.

Thus far, the publisher has not confirmed a localization for western audiences.

Heroes of the Storm's Dehaka sure looks fun to play

Posted: 26 Mar 2016 03:00 AM PDT

Blizzard just posted a Spotlight video for Dehaka, who is set to arrive in Heroes of the Storm next week.

You'll get a brief rundown on Dehaka's Zerg background, as well as a full explanation of his abilities. In short, his passive is all about collecting essences (kind of like Butcher's fresh meat) to trigger healing. He can also travel to any bush or vent every 45 seconds, drag heroes, queue up an AOE (that lets him phase through enemies), and burrow, which causes him to become untargetable for a few seconds.

I can see burrowing right at the perfect moment to cancel Nova's triple-tap, and so on. I don't know how he won't be formidable in the right hands, but we'll see how tuned his powers are next week once he hits the meta (you can also try him now in PTR). Like Diablo, I see a high success rate though given his survivability and peeling potential with drag.

Yep, Chase sure does look like a new Hotel Dusk

Posted: 26 Mar 2016 02:00 AM PDT

I embraced the aphorism "don't judge a book by its cover" as a child. After squandering the contents of my piggy bank on a dreadful fantasy novel that endeared itself to me with some captivating artwork, only to disappoint, I learned to be wary of basing my purchasing decisions off pretty pictures.

It's probably equally unwise to take a shine to a game after seeing a reel of panning anime stills accompanied by felicitous music, but I don't care. Chase: Unsolved Cases Investigation Division seems to scratch the same itch as Nintendo DS adventure game Hotel Dusk: Room 215 once did -- and with good reason. It has a similar pedigree, coming from the same director, Taisuke Kanasaki, and former Cing staffers. Here's hoping those guys can match their previous work beyond the familiar art direction.

I suppose we'll find out sometime after the 3DS title debuts on the Japanese eShop this spring.
