| Hot Mess: 10 Years of Destructoid party photos Posted: 20 Mar 2016 01:40 PM PDT There's something about the Mr. Destructoid helmet that brings out the animal in people. I've seen sheepish tiny McChicken-like boys turn into fearless crotch-thrusters, running up on stages and doing what three shots of Jager could not afford. It was a joy to pass around the helmet and watch people get loose. Special thanks to DJ Ray, MyKill, and Grimecraft and our hosts Will Powers and Danny Hui, and a special thanks to bearded Hamza. We bought a bunch of Saint Patrick's Day party favors from Walgreens that just happened to be Dtoid Green and it worked out under drunken dim lighting conditions. Thanks to everyone who came. | Oblivion is ten years old today Posted: 20 Mar 2016 12:00 PM PDT When I heard that this weekend would mark the tenth anniversary since the launch of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I thought two things. One, “Holy shit, it's been ten years since Oblivion came out?” Two, “Holy shit, it's only been ten years since Oblivion came out?” Oblivion feels like a game that happened a lifetime ago, but it also feels like something I just played yesterday. I'm sure there is a glib remark someone could make about “Hur hur, that's because Fallout 4 is just Oblivion with guns” but I don't mean it like that. Oblivion was influential. It was impactful. It's a game that has clung to my consciousness for a decade now. For all its many faults, quirks, and speech-wheels, it was a game that changed what I wanted out of an RPG, and I'd like to take a moment to celebrate it. |
| Atelier Sophie conjures western release on PS4, Vita Posted: 20 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PDT Atelier Sophie, the latest in Gust's long line of alchemy-themed RPGs, is coming west this June. The title will be available in North America on June 7 and Europe on June 10 for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. A PlayStation 3 version was also released in Japan when the game debuted there last November, but it seems Koei Tecmo has opted to not localize it for that platform. The PS4 version will be available both digitally and at retail, while the Vita version will be exclusive to the PlayStation Store in the West. Tecmo Koei is also taking pre-orders for a limited edition boxed set, which is available via NIS America's online store for $100. The same bundle, which includes a two-disc soundtrack, cloth poster, 48-page hardcover art book, and five miniature art prints, will also be on offer via NISA's European shop starting March 22 at 12pm GMT. [Correction: An earlier revision of this story mistakenly indicated Atelier Sophie was a digital-only release across all platforms, outside of the limited edition, rather than just the Vita version.] |
| Posted: 20 Mar 2016 10:00 AM PDT Sometimes a game requires a second look before you realize how great it could be. This was certainly the case with Pharaoh Rebirth, a title I might have dismissed entirely had Jonathan Holmes not sent the Dtoid staff an e-mail saying, "Best new video game, it's been here all this time and we just didn't know it." So I gave it a chance, and after watching the trailer I immediately knew I needed to play this thing. Egyptian mythology and cute animal mascot characters are definitely relevant to my interests, and after getting a taste of the combat mechanics and insane-looking bosses, I was ready to dive right in. Thankfully, Pharaoh Rebirth did not disappoint. |

| Zero Time Dilemma gets release date, PC port Posted: 20 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PDT Zero Time Dilemma, the follow-up to Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward and 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, is heading to western shores on June 28, Aksys Games has announced. The PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS title will arrive simultaneously across North America and Europe on that date, but only the former territory will be receiving a physical release. (Sorry, Eurofriends!) During a panel at last week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Aksys revealed developer Spike Chunsoft is working on a PC port, but a release date hasn't been nailed down just yet. | Spend your Sunday as a Surf Shogun Posted: 20 Mar 2016 05:00 AM PDT I didn't know how badly I needed a violent samurai take on California Games' surfing mini-game until I had one in my life. Farmer Gnome, who you may remember from Fistful of Gun and a bunch of other small experimental games, just released Surf Shogun for free on itch.io, and I can tell you it's a pretty good way to kill a lazy Sunday morning. Up to four players can ride the waves and slash through endless packs of renegade ninja surfers with a variety of swords, shuriken, and spears. The score multiplier increases the longer you spend in the air, so you'll want to make your maritime executions as gnarly as possible. A fun little game to pass the time with and wax nostalgic about a 1980s that never quite existed. |
| The Division director leaves Ubisoft Posted: 20 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PDT The Divsion director Ryan Barnard has left Ubisoft to take a post at IO Interactive, the Copenhagen-based Square Enix subsidiary behind titles like Hitman and Kane & Lynch. According to Square Enix (via MCV), Barnard is now the studio's gameplay director, a newly-created role that entails heading up three of IO's core teams: gameplay, online, and world. "Ryan's contributions to game design over the years show he's the ideal person to spearhead the coming efforts," Square Enix told MCV. "We are very happy to add his talent to the pool of great people working at IO." Before joining Ubisoft's Swedish satellite Massive Entertainment, Barnard previously worked at Sony Online Entertainment (now Daybreak) on EverQuest II, Crytek, and Warhammer Online dev EA Mythic. | XCOM creator developing new strategy game Posted: 20 Mar 2016 02:00 AM PDT XCOM creator Julian Gollop is working on something new, a strategy game called Phoenix Point. Gollop provided few other details about the project, which is in development at Snapshot Games, the studio Gollop founded in 2013 after leaving Ubisoft's satellite office in Sofia, Bulgaria. Snapshot released its first project, Chaos Reborn, a reimagining of Gollop's 1985 tactics game Chaos: The Battle of Wizards, last October after a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2014. | Report: Quantum Break appears to run at 720p Posted: 20 Mar 2016 12:00 AM PDT Quantum Break seems to sport a 720p resolution, according Digital Foundry. The tech experts put the Xbox One version through its paces at a recent press event, where they concluded the upcoming title features a native resolution of just 720p, Digital Foundry surmises developer Remedy Entertainment might be replicating what it previously did with Alan Wake, mitigating a less-than-cutting-edge visual output with technical wizardry to give the game a more impressive outward than the resolution might suggest in and of itself. Though Digital Foundry maintains Quantum Break is "stunning in many areas," the group suspects Remedy might be using film grain and motion blur along with stellar anti-aliasing to create something that blends previously rendered frames with current ones. As for the frame rate, the title reportedly runs at a solid 30 frames-per-second for the most part, apart from open areas, where some minor performance issues seemed to be present. Remedy has yet to comment on the matter, but it's definitely something we'll keep an eye on as we begin to near the Xbox One and PC action game's April 5 release date.
