Blizzard patching Warcraft III almost 14 years on

Posted: 13 Mar 2016 12:00 PM PDT

Warcraft III is getting a new patch. Yes, Warcraft III. You read that correctly.

Blizzard is planning to issue an update to the 2002 strategy game this Tuesday, March 15, according to Robert Bridenbecker, the head of Blizzard's classic games division.

Bridenbecker didn't specify what patch 1.27 entails, but if the one Diablo II just received is any indication of what to expect, it's probably just to ensure compatibility with modern hardware.

This will be the first time Blizzard has updated Warcraft III since 2011, and it doesn't sound like it will be the last. Apparently these patches are merely the first stops on a long journey to keep classic titles like Warcraft III, Starcraft, and Diablo II relevant for many years to come.

Support your community!

[Recently over Discord, Lawman has been mulling over getting Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for PS3 since he owns the Vita version. Despite any opinions about how a community is dead, we both agreed that as long as there are players, there will be a scene. So along comes Virtua Kazama with an eerily timely post about supporting your fighting game's scene, whether it's as old as Melee or up and coming like Pokkén. ~Strider]

I’ve seen this happen before on multiple occasions, and I think this topic needs to be addressed. Have you ever witnessed someone tell you to play a better fighting game? Or better yet, tell you to drop a game that has a dead scene?

If you said yes to all of these, you are not alone. You’re just trying to show support for your own community within the FGC, and at the same time you got haters trying to dis that same community (or game) that you represent.

Weekend Deals: The Division season pass, PSN gift card, and GameStop PC spring sale

Posted: 13 Mar 2016 09:00 AM PDT

Since Tom Clancy's The Division released last week and the game has reigned supreme atop the sales charts. It's so popular that even the season pass is currently one of the top-three sellers over at GMG as of this writing. But if you've yet to pick the game, PC players can get up to 20 percent off The Division and its various editions.

On the console side of things, there's a $50 PlayStation Network gift card going for $43 on eBay. The code is sent via email from PayPal Digital Gift, and is a good way to double dip on any upcoming PSN sales. If you've been looking for a 3DS, refurbished XL units are on sale from Nintendo via eBay for only $115, while the New 3DS XL is on sale at GameStop for $175.

Speaking of GameStop, the outlet is currently running a PC spring sale with some choice titles, such as $10 Mass Effect Trilogy and Command and Conquer Ultimate Collection. Also of note are many titles from Focus Home Interactive at new historic low pricing (e.g., Farm Simulator 2015, Cities XXL, etc.)

Why don't you like Metroid Prime: Federation Force still?

Posted: 13 Mar 2016 08:00 AM PDT

Recently, I threatened to start a petition to cancel all upcoming Nintendo Directs unless more Metroid Prime: Federation Force was shown, but luckily Nintendo caved to my demands and showed off the game. The Internet's reaction to the latest trailer on YouTube has been so negative that it prompted Nintendo to disable the counter that displays likes and dislikes; before removal, it was about a one to three ratio in favor of dislikes.

To say I wasn't super excited to see new footage of the game would be a lie; taking down large creatures in the Metroid universe with my friends is something I never knew I wanted, till now. Nintendo has a history of taking its IPs and innovating, creating things that fans may not have asked for. The reactions and results to these innovations are usually the same: fans are upset that the game isn't what they had hoped for, yet after release most everyone ends up loving the game. This flip flopping happened with both The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and the original Metroid Prime.

Atlus is shutting down Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine

Posted: 13 Mar 2016 07:00 AM PDT

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine will meet its end next month.

Atlus has announced plans to terminate service for the MMORPG on May 24, after which time any remaining players will no longer have access the nine-year-old game. In preparation for the closure, Atlus is no longer accepting new account registrations and is offering refunds to existing users for any unused currency they might still have.

This notice applies  solely to the Japanese version, as the English release was abandoned in 2014 -- less than a year after XSEED parent Marvelous acquired the title along with Atlus' online division.

Imagine was developed by prolific shoot-'em-up studio Cave, and originally released on March 30, 2007. The title takes place in an alternate future between the events of Shin Megami Tensei and Shin Megami Tensei II, where humans and demons have learned to coexist after a costly war.

League of Legends, Skullgirls and World of Warcraft actress's tips for success

Posted: 13 Mar 2016 06:25 AM PDT

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great video games. It airs live every Sunday at 4:00pm EST on YouTube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

[Update: Show's over everyone! Thanks so much to Danielle for hanging out with us! Over the course of the show, we managed to completely solve huge real world problems like habitual stalking and the lack diverse role models in game and anime culture. That was nice surprised. The rerun should be up soon, but in the meantime, here's a video of Painwheel, Danielle's character from Skullgirls, tearing up the compatition. It's hard to believe that the warm and pleasant woman I just spent the afternoon with is able to inhabit the role of this guttural, tortured monster. Acting it pretty cool!]

Today on Sup Holmes we're happy to welcome actress Danielle McRae to the program. If you've ever dreamed of getting paid to stand in front of a microphone and pretend to be a video game character, this episode is for you. Between her work in anime, fan films, and AAA games, Danielle has made herself a part of just about every kind of game. Metal Gear, Dead Island, Earth Defense Force, and World of Warcraft are all on her resume, which is better than most of us can say about ourselves.

We'll be talking to Danielle about how she broke into the industry, what it's been like to work on such a wide variety of franchises, what she's working on now, and a lot more. The show starts at 2:30pm EST. It would be great to see you there!

Man channels the spirit of Solid Snake in CS:GO

Posted: 13 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PDT

As a person who has spent well over 300 hours as a Spy in TF2, I'm no stranger to the thrill of sneaking behind your opponent's back and maneuvering around them for a sneaky win in a Source game. But, the Spy has the benefit of a cloaking device, a disguise kit, and an unflappable demeanor. What does a stealth agent in CS:GO have? Brass balls.

Like a meticulous secret agent, YouTuber 1Relyks puts his plan into motion before the round even begins. Carefully remaining concealed while a firefight erupts around him, he patiently waits until the bomb is planted before moving into action. Delicately, smoothly, he skulks behind a pack of defending Terrorist team members - any of whom could happen to turn around on a whim and foil his entire plan - pops a smoke grenade, and defuses the bomb in the ensuing confusion. Counter-Terrorists win.

Played like a damn fiddle.

Prima's Street Fighter V guide is a permanent tribute to a temporary game

Posted: 13 Mar 2016 04:30 AM PDT

Brady's Ultra Street Fighter IV Bible was a near-perfect send off for Street Fighter IV. It works as both an in-depth analysis of nearly every inch of the game's systems, and a permanent record of what the final iteration of Street Fighter IV came to be. It was released at a moment when it was unlikely that Ultra would ever be patched or upgraded again, as Capcom was already full swing into development of Street Fighter V by that time.

Prima's new Street Fighter V Collector's Edition Strategy Guide (headed up by the lead author of Brady's Ultra Bible) is in the opposite position. Street Fighter V as we know it won't be around for much longer. New characters will be added. Patches that may apply vast changes to how characters play are on the way. This wouldn't have happened back in Street Fighter II's heyday. For better or worse, the games didn't grow or change. They remained forever frozen in time on the cartridges and CD-ROMs they were burned on.

These days, the only media that is guaranteed to never be changed after the fact is fully analog work like the printed page. While today's Street Fighter V will surely disappear, Prima's 463-page essay on the game will always be there for future generations who want to see what the game was like in its infancy.

Pharaoh Rebirth+ looks like a hopping good time

Posted: 13 Mar 2016 01:00 AM PST

I had never heard of Pharaoh Rebirth until today, but an updated version of this indie metroidvania set in Egypt will be releasing on Steam later this week.

Pharaoh Rebirth+ comes from Japanese developer Krobon Station, known for its Mogura series of games such as Action Mogura. I'll admit that I'm not at all familiar with Krobon Station's work yet, but after watching the trailer below, I'm tempted to go back and check out some of the developer's older titles.

In this action adventure, players take the role of Dr. Jonathan Banfield, a famous treasure hunter who also happens to be a rabbit. After falling victim to an ancient curse, he must collect seven holy grails from all over Egypt in order to cleanse himself.

It's a silly concept, but it looks wonderful in action. The trailer gives me some serious Cave Story and La-Mulana vibes. And check out those boss fights! Plus, for a game set entirely in Egypt, there still seems to be a nice variety of locations on display. I've always thought we could use more Egyptian-themed games anyway.

Pharaoh Rebirth+ is set for a Steam release on March 17, 2016 for $9.99.
