Leaked footage of Forza 6: Apex looks dull Posted: 11 Mar 2016 12:15 PM PST Footage of the upcoming Windows 10-only, free-to-play Forza Motorsport 6: Apex has been leaked online by some naughty person and it doesn't seem up to par with the Xbox One version. It certainly doesn't look anywhere near as good as Microsoft lead us to believe in the announcement trailer. That said, keep in mind that this is a work in progress, and it is unknown what the player's system specs are. Also, the person who recorded this footage said, "software recording is hard" meaning this could just be mostly on the uploader's part. I fully expect this video to be pulled, so watch it while you have a chance Forza fans. |
Fun with Hitman, TRAPDOOR SPIDER STYLE Posted: 11 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PST I wanted to try out the sniper rifle. Because of Hitman's one-big-mission episodic release and associated experience system, it wasn't unlocked as a drop you can have pre-placed in the map until a few successful assassination attempts. There's a pre-outlined "challenge" in the game to take out both targets with a sniper within ten seconds of one another (and some other nested challenges I hadn't done, like get an assassination by way of headshot). And I wanted to try out the sniper. So I snuck my way into the second floor rafters above the Paris fashion show, nicked the fireworks display remote, picked up the sniper in a garden shed outside the palace, crow barred open a door to get onto the riverside, and climbed a tall cherry-picker type industrial crane thing. While scaling the ladder with a large sniper rifle on my back I thought about Leon: The Professional, how snipers are for amateurs, how my previous feats of slipping into the washroom with targets, drowning them in the toilet, and stuffing them into the closets was a lot more "professional," and how sniping was both less professional and less amusing than setting up a Rube Goldberg death trap. It was the one moment where Hitman didn't feel like a dope slapstick murder comedy, but a bit more grass knoll-ish, just with the isolated tranquility (compared to elbow rubbing in the dense party). Or at least, you know, "There's Homer Simpson [bang]. There's Homer [bang]. That's Homer [bang]." Anyways I triggered the fireworks display prematurely, got both targets to head to their separate balconies out of curiosity, and sniped 'em both. Still neat. Hitman is fun. Anyways, this: |
The Hotline Miami: Collector's Edition vinyl looks sick Posted: 11 Mar 2016 10:35 AM PST Dennaton Games, Devolver Digital, and Laced Records have partnered for a "definitive" collector's edition Hotline Miami vinyl release this year, and fans are eating it up. The three-disc set includes the original 22 tracks plus four bonus songs from Perturbator, M|O|O|N, El Huervo, and Jasper Byrne. Great soundtrack aside, I can't get over how badass that cover art is. The project is going through Kickstarter and has already surpassed its initial funding goal of £40,000 with 29 days to go. If you want one of the 5,000 copies in this first pressing, you'll need to sign on as a backer. The lowest available tier right now is £35, and that does not include shipping. This nine-minute, no-death Furi boss fight is stressful Posted: 11 Mar 2016 10:00 AM PST A couple of days ago, we were able to see snippets of Furi, an upcoming PlayStation 4 and PC shooter/action game centered around boss fights, and I thought it looked promising. Now, here's a full playthrough of that same encounter by the title's combat designer. Spoiler: he's good. Most of the battle is shown from a pulled-back view, allowing the player to fully see all of the crazy projectile patterns and act accordingly, but there are also closer-up sword-fighting sequences too. If there's one thing I don't care for, it's the inclusion of quick-time events, but other than that I really do like how this is taking shape. I'll be curious to see if the other duels are as varied. |
Some of the new 'Nintendo Selects' games are cheap on the eShop, too Posted: 11 Mar 2016 09:15 AM PST While most of you will probably prefer to go the physical route for the latest round of Nintendo Selects games in North America, I figured someone out there might like to know that the rebranded Wii U and 3DS titles are also discounted on the eShop now as well. Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Mario Party: Island Tour, and Yoshi's New Island are available digitally for $19.99 each. That's half price (or better!) than the old standard MSRP for some of these. If you need Pikmin 3 right away (and, as your gaming adviser, I firmly believe that you do), buying digital might be the way to go. Assuming you have the storage to spare, that is. Get your zombie and Nep Nep fill in MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies on Vita next month Posted: 11 Mar 2016 08:30 AM PST Calling all Nep Nep fanatics! It's a day that ends in Y, so you know what that means: another game in the Neptunia series is getting localized! This time, it is MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies, a four-player beat-'em-up where the girls that represent video game consoles in the perpetual console war join forces to fight zombies. I can't make this stuff up. MTB+NVSZ looks to be a spiritual successor to Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed, which, by the way, has a Steam port coming out in just a few days on March 21. Just yesterday I was joking with the Nepamaniacs that hang out in our super unofficial Destructoid Discord chat server that Neptunia games release so fast that a new one is ready to announce by the time PR can type up the press release for the last one. I've only dabbled in the series, having never finished any of the games so correct me if I'm wrong here, but is that girl riding a friggin' crayfish in that screenshot!? I guess I'll know for sure when the game launches on Vita on April 26 in the US, and across the pond on April 29. MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune VS Zombies |
VR has a serious issue in the real world Posted: 11 Mar 2016 08:00 AM PST With the impending release of retail VR headsets early next month, I've been working out how to rearrange my house to accommodate room-tracking technology. Moving tables, pushing back sofas, securing down TVs, and taking into account how low lights hang from the ceiling. |
UFC 2 is so much better with Conan O'Brien Posted: 11 Mar 2016 07:30 AM PST In this Clueless Gamer segment, Conan O'Brien challenges UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor to a match of EA Sports UFC 2, and oh my god, his character's face. His hair. His everything. I'd say "poor Conan," but it looks like he enjoys seeing his eerie digital doppelganger get repeatedly punched in the face even more than I do, and I was straight up cackling. |
E3 is 'beyond relevant' says organization that profits greatly off people thinking E3 is relevant Posted: 11 Mar 2016 07:00 AM PST E3 is becoming less and less relevant. It's not a dead show, but it's also past its prime. There was once a time when the biggest video game companies in the world had to have the biggest presence at E3. It was a dick-measuring contest. Now, some of those companies have said "Nah, we're good actually." In the lead-up to E3 2016, four major companies have foregone booth space at the show. EA, Activision, Wargaming, and Disney Interactive have all decided that their money and effort is best spent elsewhere. The idea of holding fan experiences is more alluring and probably a fraction of the price. As far as press? These companies can still get press without all that pomp and circumstance. While some (rightly) see E3 as a changing show, the ESA -- the organization that holds E3 and profits tremendously off its continued existence -- says that it's just as integral to the video game industry as it ever was. Speaking with MCV, ESA VP Rich Taylor said "The 'Is E3 still relevant?' question gets asked every year, and then gets answered in June of that same year with a resounding 'yes.'" Taylor continued "E3 is beyond relevant, it is essential and critical to the game and entertainment industry calendar. It changes, it has never been a stagnant show and this year is no different. Last year if you asked most people, in the aftermath of E3 how they found it, many will tell you it was the best E3 they can remember. But in the ramp up to that show, I was answering the same sort of questions that you just put to me." E3 serves a purpose, sure. Business gets done, news gets broken, and a lot of games get pre-ordered. But, from the top down, there isn't the same level of effectiveness. Companies like Microsoft and Sony have the industry's attention. The smaller guys? They have to fight through a lot of noise and interference to be heard. It's hardly worth it. PR and marketing reps are figuring this out. If you aren't the biggest of the big, your message is going to be diminished. That's why our pre-E3 embargoes are shifting toward being lifted weeks before E3. Traditionally, the idea of pre-E3 events is so that we have some of our more important coverage ready to go up at the beginning of E3. Instead, those embargoes are lifting two weeks early on a Tuesday morning. That's because it's better to have everyone listening on a random Tuesday morning than to be one of a hundred announcements happening at the same time. Now that the likes of Activision and EA have decided they can do more for less elsewhere, how long will it be until others follow suit? Those companies are juggernauts, yet they're finding that E3 just isn't worth it. Still, Taylor and the ESA have their heads in the sand, proclaiming that everything's all right. It's akin to that meme where the dog sits in his kitchen drinking coffee while his house burns down around him. Maybe things are fine enough for now, but they won't be for a whole lot longer unless the ESA finds a way to ensure that more big names don't lose interest in E3. ESA hits back at E3 critics, but is considering inviting consumers [MCV] |
Wow, we're getting Trails in the Sky the 3rd after all Posted: 11 Mar 2016 06:30 AM PST No, XSEED wasn't screwing with us with that "So a priest and a nun walk into a game" tweet. You can relax, Kyle and friends. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd will in fact see a Western release for PC (and only PC) in 2017, the publisher announced today. Delightful news. "While we've had our share of struggles with the series in regards to its often lengthy and arduous localization, I can say with confidence that what we’ve achieved far outweighs any hardships," said XSEED Games executive vice president Ken Berry. "We are without question committed to our fans, and are absolutely humbled by their overwhelming support." Another localized Falcom title, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II, will release this fall for PlayStation 3 and Vita. There's a fresh batch of English-language screenshots below. XSEED says that, to date, the treasured JRPG series has sold over 350,000 copies in the West. Even if you aren't a fan of these games or are just ambivalent, you have to admire their continued existence. It's as if they exist outside of time, and I for one find that quality endearing. |
Quantum Break finds Nirvana but not peace Posted: 11 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PST Although it won't launch for another three weeks, Quantum Break has a launch trailer. That's the weird dilution of terminology in the games industry today -- words used because they sound good and not because they're accurate. Really, this is more of a "pre-order, please!" trailer. Surely there will be more trailers between now and April 5. Semantics aside, this particular trailer is fun because of its hazy, legato rendition of Nirvana's "Come As You Are." Conflict resolution comes in the form of just stopping time and simply taking guns away. Further conflict resolution involves a lot of shooting and punching. Pacifism only gets you so far, bud. |
Hitman deal: Take a 25 percent hit on the PC version for release week Posted: 11 Mar 2016 05:30 AM PST Today marks the debut for Square Enix's 2016 Hitman. Discounts for the PS4 and Xbox One consoles are pretty much nonexistent at the moment as the title has gone episodic (and you can only buy digital). The situation is the same on the PC as we edge closer to digital-only release titles (and content being released in piecemeal format). For PC/Steam gamers, you can snap 25% off the PC digital copy with the code listed below. It'll run through March 14 (a few days after release) and cuts the Hitman - Full Experience version from $60 to only $45. For the "Intro Pack" which contains the first episode, you'll be looking at an entree fee of only $11.25. Use Coupon Code: DEALZON25
The game has reviewed okay and fans of the franchise should enjoy the reboot title without much fuss but if you're new to the series and you're interested... buying into the "Intro Pack" may make a lot more sense rather than buying "The Full Experience." Game deals from Dealzon. Sales help support Destructoid. |
And there it is: EverQuest Next canceled Posted: 11 Mar 2016 05:00 AM PST The MMORPG EverQuest Next isn't happening. "When we decided to create the next chapter in the EverQuest journey, we didn't aim low," said Daybreak Games president Russell Shanks in an announcement today. "We set out to make something revolutionary ... Unfortunately, as we put together the pieces, we found that it wasn't fun." The game wasn't meeting expectations internally and was unlikely to please fans either, according to Shanks, who noted "EverQuest and EverQuest II are going strong. Rest assured that our passion to grow the world of EverQuest remains undiminished." As for Landmark, the sort of lead-in game to EverQuest Next, that's surprisingly still moving forward. It's launching this spring for $9.99 (specifics here for folks who put money into this thing). Writing on the Daybreak forums, executive producer Holly Longdale said "Our vision for Landmark is to provide a place where you can create ANYTHING, tell your own stories, and share your creativity with other players. We are wrapping up a HUGE game update for Landmark with LOTS of new additions and improvements, some of which you’ve already seen in sneak preview posts..." I had to double check the last time we touched on EverQuest Next, and it looks like it was almost two years ago. Sounds about right. I completely forgot this existed! While it's disappointing to hear the developers couldn't find a way to make it work, it's good to have closure at last. EQN News: A Letter from Daybreak's President [Daybreak Games] |
The next Hearthstone expansion is 'Whispers of the Old Gods' Posted: 11 Mar 2016 04:50 AM PST Today during a livestream event, Blizzard announced the next chapter in the Hearthstone saga -- as was spoiled this morning -- Whispers of the Old Gods. It will be an expansion that quite literally deals with the Old Gods of the lore (C’Thun, Yogg-Saron, Y’Shaarj, and N’Zoth), nameless terrors that are pure evil. 134 new cards are a part of the update, and they've provided a few for your perusal, as well as a cinematic trailer. The expansion will be up for pre-order on March 14, at which point you can buy a 50-pack bundle for $49.99, complete with a creepy card back. It will arrive in "late April or early May." More info will come on March 21, and the standard format system will accompany the release. It's great to see more classic Warcraft references making their way in, but I'm generally not a fan of the card-only approach, so call me when the next real adventure-level expansion hits. The good news is that players who log in near the launch window will net three packs for free, and the first pack will always net you a free Beckoner of Evil and C'Thun. Hoopin' is on the horizon for Rocket League Posted: 11 Mar 2016 04:30 AM PST Rocket League did for soccer what few anticipated: it made controlling an individual player exciting. This past winter, it took the formula on ice with the hockey-themed Snow Day, and now it's going further in the genre of sports in which two teams try to get a thing into an goal area. This time, it's celebrating March Madness like ya boy Steven Hansen would: by hoopin'. I'm looking at this teaser image and just imagining how its going to go down. Snow Day emphasized the ground (and wall) game, since the puck rarely left the ice. This will probably have shots coming from the ground as well, so as to lob the ball against the backboard and into the semicircular hoop. But then, I'm also picturing alley-oops from those air game masters, taking a teammate's lob and dunking it in. There are going to be so many animated gifs. Holy cow, I never thought I'd be excited to play a basketball video game. Rocket League, I love you.
It should be noted that the Rocket League Twitter account mentions the mode will be available "later this year" in another tweet, so it doesn't sound like this will be here in time for the usual March basketball shenanigans. |
Diablo II, yes, II, just got a new patch Posted: 11 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PST Man, that Diablo II case brings back memories. It was basically sold out everywhere in my local area (back when games actually...sold out!), and all of my friends had trouble finding it. Nowadays you can just buy everything digitally, and if you want D2, you can just buy it. Blizzard has made it even easier to enjoy the game on modern platforms too, by way of a new patch this week. They basically just addressed compatibility problems and didn't add any new content, but the publisher did provide this note: "The journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there." Diablo II 1.14a [Battle.net] |
Watch Guilty Gear Xrd's Kum Haehyun in action Posted: 11 Mar 2016 03:30 AM PST Kum Haehyun is coming to Guilty Gear Xrd's Revelator update, and Arc System Works has a 10 minute overview video up on its official channel. It goes through just about every combo and move they have, if you're curious to see their style. The character itself is amazing aesthetically, with a nice mix of organic and static movement. Kum's moveset is also pretty varied, and the fighter moves a lot faster than you'd expect, given the robot's large stature. Out of all of the new Revelator characters, this one looks like the most compelling. The expansion will arrive on June 7, 2016 in the US, and May 26, 2016 in Japan. |
SNK reveals new King of Fighters XIV characters Posted: 11 Mar 2016 03:00 AM PST King of Fighters XIV is still coming along, and other than the art style, I'm basically on board. SNK has been slowly revealing new characters over the past year or so, and now, they've unveiled Chin, Tung Fu Rue, and Choi. They all look just as animated as ever, especially Tung, who I have been rocking ever since the first Fatal Fury in the early 90s. |
The Rhapsody music service is hitting Wii U this week Posted: 11 Mar 2016 02:30 AM PST So uh, if you want another app to install on the Wii U, Rhapsody is available this week. It will utilize the GamePad's touch screen to facilitate music streaming, which involves curated channels and customized playlists. The service comes with a 30-day trial, and is $9.99 after that. I don't see this ending well, as nearly every Wii U app ends service after a short period of time. Now Playing [Rhapsody] |
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD nearly had Wiimote controls Posted: 11 Mar 2016 02:00 AM PST A few interesting tidbits came out of a Famitsu interview (translated by Nintendo Everything) for Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD with the legendary Eiji Aonuma and assistant director Tomomi Sano. For starters, they note how Nintendo contacted Tantalus, an Australian developer (who also ported Mass Effect 3 to Wii U), to handle the port. The team also considered using Wiimote controls, apparently all the way into the middle of the process, but the fact that the GamePad has gyro support ultimately swayed them. Aonuma compared GamePad traversal to using a smartphone to get to a destination on foot. I'm always preaching for options, so a third control method would have been really sweet in addition to the GamePad and Pro Controller inclusions. But two is enough, and the GamePad is the best way to play it by far, so I'm okay with this choice. Zelda [Famitsu via Nintendo Everything] |
Turns out the Chuckle Brothers make excellent hitmen Posted: 11 Mar 2016 01:30 AM PST The Chuckle Brothers are two of Britain’s most beloved and well-known children’s entertainers. Their show, Chucklevision, ran for 22 years and almost 300 episodes of wholesome, slapstick fun and brought joy and laughter to multiple generations of the country’s youth. And now here they are, playing a live-action recreation of Hitman. Watch Barry and Paul as they fire off their well-known catchphrases while also asking Agent 47 to punch an innocent lady, or stuff a guard’s corpse in a burning shed. It’s both the most disturbing and hilarious thing ever, and you should experience for yourself. Note to self: never cross the Chuckle Brothers. Oh dear oh dear. |
Next Hearthstone expansion allegedly titled 'Whispers of the Old Gods' Posted: 11 Mar 2016 01:00 AM PST In the infinite wisdom of the internet and all of its users, someone has seemingly uncovered the title of Blizzard's newest Hearthstone expansion before its announcement. While the publisher was going to reveal it tonight by way of a livestream event, Reddit user That_Azzin found it over in Brooklyn today, scrawled upon a hand painted wall advertisement, that has since been covered. The art is inline with Hearthstone, and Old Gods are in fact part of the lore, so it's a safe bet. Warcraft fans are probably chomping at the bit in regards to the possibilities. We can probably expect to see C'Thun, and the other four Old Gods. Found a [sic] advertisement for the new expansion in Williamsburg Brooklyn today [Reddit] |
Square Enix announces $10 Easter 'surprise box' Posted: 11 Mar 2016 12:14 AM PST Square Enix has launched an Easter mystery box surprise box initiative, which will go live on March 21. From now until March 20, prospective gamblers can take a chance on the deal, which costs $10, and will net you $80 worth of stuff. The deal is exclusive to PC. For reference, the $10 Christmas box that was sold last year was a disappointment. For science, I decided to pick it up, but it was mostly just a heap of old games and "coupons," the latter of which technically boosted the $80 value. Easter Surprise Box 2016 [Square Enix] |
Killer Instinct character leaks hint at General RAAM and Mira Posted: 11 Mar 2016 12:00 AM PST By way of a Season 3 leak for Killer Instinct, two new characters may have just been revealed. The first is Mira, who is said to be the sister of Maya, who was released in Season 2. She was supposedly dead based on the story, but will presumably come back at some point. The other big addition is General RAAM, of Gears of War fame. He'll join the Arbiter from Halo and Rash from Battletoads to augment the cameo theme in Season 3. I'm sure some purist will love Mira but RAAM is exciting, especially if he brings his chain saw. 8+ Hour Long Killer Instinct Season 3 Stream, showcasing competitive matches [NeoGAF via Shoryuken] |
Ha! A Kraft macaroni and cheese box leaked the next Disney Infinity DLC Posted: 10 Mar 2016 11:00 PM PST Synergy! Disney is known to advertise in just about every industry under the sun, but this is a new level. DLC has been leaked by way of a food item. Someone was able to spot an errant box of mac and cheese out in the wild, which advertised a brand new Play Set for Disney Infinity 3.0 -- Finding Dory. It not only reveals the Dory figure, but the set itself, which is a hefty hub world, and not just an ancillary bit of DLC. Finding Dory, the sequel to Finding Nemo, will launch on June 17 of this year, so we can probably expect it to arrive before then. Parents, I weep for your wallets. Friday Night Fights - For Elsa Posted: 10 Mar 2016 10:00 PM PST We are currently at $295 of our $400 goal. This community is as always, amazing, and so damn beautiful. What am I on about? Well, Papa Bear/Grumpy Dad came at the FNF team, with this great idea to raise money for one of our best: Elsa. So of course, we set about doing that. Why are we raising money for Elsa? To help get her some game stuff, that'll help take her mind off/ease her having to deal with this. Why should you care about Elsa? Because she is quite frankly, one of the most amazing people out there. Incredibly smart, badass at FPS, and kind and sweet. She is Dtoid's voice of reason, and the Mom of FNF. She hasn't been around much due to crap going on, but that doesn't change our love her. So here we are, dedicating this night to Elsa. Screw that. This whole weekend is yours Elsa. Come Monday, we are going to grab you some sweet swag and send it your way, but until then, let's co-op our way to awesomeness, race to the finish, and kill our way to victory for Elsa. [If you'd like to help get us across that goal, swing by here for details. Otherwise, just join in and host or play. Have fun. Shoot someone in the butt and pretend you didn't.] |
Check out this incredible Mirror's Edge map in Call of Duty Posted: 10 Mar 2016 09:00 PM PST If you ever wondered what the lovechild of Mirror’s Edge and Call of Duty might look like, wonder no more, my friend. YouTuber SuX Lolz (Best. Username. Ever) has recreated the prologue map from the parkour game in the Death Run mod in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (thanks, PCGamesN). And it looks incredible. Though unfinished, the level is incredibly detailed, including a day/night cycle. Here, take a butcher's yourself: Amazing, right? “This is probably my last cod4 map,” said creator Sux Lolz in the video description. “I worked on this map for now 3 months, the map is not finish[ed] but I decided to make the preview now. “This map will have like 4 secrets (not finish[ed]), there is 5 rooms: bounce / weapons / sniper / knife / shotgun , some rooms are on the street and some other room on rooftop.” HAPPY FRIDAY! <3 |
Microsoft considering compensation for recent Xbox Live outage Posted: 10 Mar 2016 08:00 PM PST Microsoft is considering compensating Xbox Live users for the recent downtime. Xbox Live has been buckling a lot recently, demonstrating frequent outages and downtime we're not typically used to experiencing with the service. As a Reddit thread requesting compensation gathers pace, Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb replied to commenters on the site (thanks GamingBolt), stating: "I've taken some of the more thoughtful comments and shared them with a few folks on the Xbox team to make them aware of this request. "That's about all I've got right now--but when I am back in the office I am going to stop by and chat 1:1 with some folks about this as well." Issues with the Titanfall launch way back in 2014 saw affected users refunded a week’s worth of their Gold subscription, but Microsoft hasn't had to compensate users to the extent Sony has had to the past. What would you think would be fair compensation for the recent outages? Tell me below... |
