Catlateral Damage brings destruction and Destructoid to PS4 Posted: 10 Mar 2016 03:00 PM PST Goat Simulator and Octodad are two high-profile games from recent years that championed the cause for computer games starring badly behaved animals, but nestled in between the two of of them was an adorable little jerk that you may have missed. Based on the real-life experiences and Katamari fan game fantasies of Chris Chung, Catlateral Damage went on to forge a passionate following on Steam in 2015, leading to in-game cameos from the likes of Isaac (The Binding of Isaac), Juan (Guacamelee) and the stars of the previously mentioned octopus and goat adventures. Mr. Destructoid managed to get in there as well, though unlike in his in-game appearance in Bomberman Ultra, he spent most of his time in this game on the receiving end of the punishment. In more recent news, it looks like Catlateral Damage did well enough to warrant a release on PS4. It will be coming to the console on March 22, with a 20% off launch sale to boot. What better way to celebrate Destructoid's 10th birthday than by pretending to be a cat and smacking our mascot into submission while making as many messes as you can? I know that many of you already enjoy that activity, but now you can do it in a video game! |
The one-man Stardew Valley has sold over 425K copies Posted: 10 Mar 2016 02:00 PM PST If not for The Division, a multi-studio game that "has sold through more copies in its first 24 hours of availability than any previous title in [Ubisoft's] history," the unassuming farming/life sim Stardew Valley would be sitting at the top of Steam's current best-selling games list. It was made by one person, Eric Barone, who took on the project four years ago as a way to brush up his programming skills. "On average, I probably worked on it 10 hours a day every day of the week during development," he told Gamasutra. "Now that the game is out, I'm probably spending more like 15 hours a day on it." That effort has paid off, both commercially and critically. Stardew Valley has sold 425,000 copies across Steam and GOG.com as of March 9. That's just under two weeks in. And the reviews are glowing. Our own Patrick Hancock called it "a game that keeps on giving" and gave it a 9.5 out of 10. "I thought it would be popular with people who were fans of Harvest Moon or Rune Factory, and I thought that would pretty much be it," Barone said to PC Gamer. "I never expected it to have such wide appeal. I mean, I'm super happy about it and I'm blown away by the reaction, but I'm surprised too." Such a heartwarming success story. I hope he has a long future in game design ahead of him. The 4 years of self-imposed crunch that went into Stardew Valley [Gamasutra] |
The next big update for Diablo III involves a ton of cosmetics Posted: 10 Mar 2016 01:00 PM PST Diablo III is evolving all the time, whether it's adding new areas into the mix, or overhauling entire aspects of the game. Now, Blizzard is set to unleash a whole new trove of cosmetic options. As you can see in the below video from Bluddshed, there's a ton of stuff coming up, including new pets and cosmetic items to wear. The known items include dragon and butterfly wings, a StarCraft-esque armor set, and pets like the Cow King and a yeti. Sounds good to me! |
XCOM 2 patch brings balance and performance tweaks Posted: 10 Mar 2016 12:30 PM PST I loved XCOM 2, but even its biggest fans could agree that it needed some serious patch-love. Bugs, hitches, and some nasty difficulty spikes all conspired to keep the game from becoming the instant classic it should have been. Thankfully, Firaxis is on the case and has issued a major update to combat several of these complains. The patch includes several performance and graphics tweaks that will hopefully improve the experience. Interestingly, a new feature called “zip mode” has been added in, allowing players to opt into a speedier version of the game with less downtime. Time-consuming animations, like soldiers waddling into position, or the Gremlin drone listlessly gliding to a hack target are significantly shortened or skipped in this mode. As I predicted, the mimic beacon was targeted for heavy nerfs. The imaginary soldier can no longer take cover and is guaranteed to be hit by enemy shots. I'm sure it will still be handy, but if won't be the “I don't want to take any damage this turn” button it used to be. Mercifully, 100% shots can no longer graze, but that's about it as far as balance changes go. Anyone hoping for Stun Lancer nerfs will just have to get used to being rendered unconscious by an electric baton. There's a mess of other small changes and quality of life improvements to go around, you can read the full list here. I particularly like the option to only pull new recruits from your custom pool of soldiers until there are none left. I spent a lot of time recreating friends, family, and the members of COBRA in the game, and I'd rather see them before Joe Rando ends up on my squad. XCOM 2 PATCH NOW LIVE [XCOM] |
Posted: 10 Mar 2016 12:00 PM PST Titan Souls took the world by storm last year. Born out of the minds of the tiny indie team Acid Nerve, everyone was anxious to see their follow-up. While Telepaint, a bite-sized mobile puzzle game, isn't quite as titanic as a hardcore boss rush project, it's still very much representative of Acid Nerve's talent as a studio. |
Kalypso's new IP Urban Empire crosses SimCity and Civilization Posted: 10 Mar 2016 11:30 AM PST Today is just a city-builder kind of day, eh? Earlier we looked at Devolver's slick new eco-friendly neighborhood builder Block'hood, and now we've got our eyes on a new IP from Kalypso Media (best known for the Tropico series). Urban Empire is a city-builder, but the twist is that it takes place over the course of 200 years of history and with that comes advancement in technology. The tech web in the gallery looks deliciously complex. I almost imagine this as an ultra-zoomed in version of something like Civilization. It's tentatively scheduled for release during the third quarter of this year, and we'll learn more about it next week at the Game Developers Conference. |
Sony is shutting down the PlayStation 2 Broadband Navigator this month Posted: 10 Mar 2016 11:00 AM PST Ha, this is an interesting one. According to a post from Sony this week, the PlayStation 2's Broadband Navigator service will end on March 31. After seeing EA drop service for games after just one year, this is pretty commendable to see Sony keep this alive for so long. For those of you who aren't aware, Broadband Navigator is a piece of software exclusive to Japanese PS2s, which allows folks to swap data on your hard drive -- like alter in-game music, for instance. And as of the end of the month, it's dead. Seeing those shapes above really brings me back. The PS2 was a damn fine machine, and one of the best eras in all of gaming for action fans. Nice 'Big Head' mode you got there, Unreal Tournament Posted: 10 Mar 2016 10:30 AM PST There's a newly-updated version of the Unreal Tournament pre-alpha with a Big Head mutator and, jeez, how the heck do I keep forgetting this is in production and also freely playable? Lookin' good. Epic Games and community creators have been toiling away for almost two years now. This week's update is centered on the icy deathmatch map "Chill," which has undergone another visual pass. You can see how that's coming along in this gameplay trailer and some screenshots (that, uncompressed, filled my SSD because I'm apparently not mindful of these things any more). Arena shooters look unbelievably cool when they're played well, but I know my place in Unreal Tournament, and it's at the bottom. I best relate to the exploding people. They're my kind. How to access Ori and the Blind Forest's new area, and what makes the updated version 'Definitive' Posted: 10 Mar 2016 10:00 AM PST Ori and the Blind Forest was by far one of my favorite games of 2015. Visually stunning and mechanically sound, it's a wonderful platformer that I can't recommend enough. Now, developer Moon Studios is releasing the "Definitive" edition of the game this week on Xbox One, with the option for existing owners to upgrade for $4.99 So what does it contain? Two new areas, for one. You can access the DLC zone almost immediately, as only the wall jump ability (granted in the first 30 minutes or so) is needed. However, as you can see in the video above it's a tad tricky and littered with spikes, so you may want to go later after you've acquired some upgrades. You'll also get new difficulty levels (including an easy mode, and a "One Life" gametype for purists), two new powers, and Spirit Well fast travel. They're all welcome additions, but don't fundamentally alter the game in a way where if you didn't like it before, you'll like it now. But honestly, with this Definitive package, I don't see anyone who even remotely enjoys platformers or Metroidvanias disliking Ori. |
Todd Howard clarifies 'three long-term' Bethesda projects comment Posted: 10 Mar 2016 09:30 AM PST Out of DICE last month we reported that Bethesda has three "big" and "different" projects in development, as noted by studio head and Fallout 4 director Todd Howard. The notion that the developer was working on three "long-term" projects simultaneously doesn't quite jive with how Bethesda typically develops. Today, speaking to GI.biz, Howard clarified, explaining that putting a number on it probably did the opposite of add clarity and insight, and that the company has "so many things" going on. "I should have never said a number because we have so many things. You could add it up in different ways. You could say it’s bigger or smaller. They’re a long way off. We just have more going on now than we had before." There are no plans for Bethesda to announce any of these things "anytime soon." "We have the Montreal studio now and we're going to be doing different things," Howard said. "We feel we have a pretty good footing and we’re in a particular place and time where we can try some new things and be confident that they’ll find some success." Nippon Ichi's Coven and Labyrinth of Refrain is looking dope Posted: 10 Mar 2016 09:00 AM PST Coven and Labyrinth of Refrain, huh? What a title. You don't see that much these days in an era that uses simplistic terms like Gears, Division, and Duty. So yeah, Coven is NIS newest game, which operates as a dungeon crawler of sorts, and is Vita bound later this year. It has that memorable NIS art style of course, including a silly Necronomicon of sorts that reminds me of Overlord Zetta's book form in Makai Kingdom. It's due in Japan on June 23 on the PlayStation Vita. Coven and Labyrinth of Refrain [NIS] |
That nuclear winter Fallout: New Vegas mod looks like it's coming along great Posted: 10 Mar 2016 08:45 AM PST It has been several months since we last checked in on Fallout: The Frontier, the community-developed New Vegas mod that takes place in a nuclear winter-shrouded Portland. There has been good reason for that: The team hasn't had much new to show off, but it has been steadily making progress. That progress looks as if it's paying off handsomely, judging by this newly-released trailer. Sporting Garbage's "Not Your Kind of People" as the soundtrack (an homage to an early Metal Gear Solid V trailer), Fallout: The Frontier reveals that it has drivable tanks, mannable turrets, big set pieces, and a space station setting with low gravity. It's certainly ambitious. This mod is being developed by 50-or-so people who are passionate about Fallout, and it kind of looks like their project could be the same depth as an Obsidian or Bethesda Fallout title. That'd sure be something, huh? They're gonna win the space race, at least. We'll see how it all turns out soon. Well, maybe. The development team is aiming for a summer release, but that's not always how this kind of thing goes. It'll be ready when it's ready and that's when we get to see Portland at its most dire. |
Come peep glimpses at Mirror's Edge Catalyst gameplay Posted: 10 Mar 2016 08:30 AM PST Just last week two Mirror's Edge Catalyst developer diaries focused on "Combat" and "Movement," but today's focuses on "Gameplay" and -- wait, what? So help me if combat and movement aren't part of gameplay (also, if combat is a big part of gameplay in the sequel....) Hmm, some notes of "side-missions" to go with open-world anxieties. Additional enemy types that need to be dispatched with a variety of combat moves and styles. Hmm, at least the composer is carried over from the original? Oh, and spied cherry blossoms at the end. I am a perpetual sucker for those suckers. Catalyst hits PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on May 24. |
Posted: 10 Mar 2016 08:00 AM PST Hitman is the funniest game I've played in a while. IO Interfactive's subtitle-free reboot of its long-running assassination franchise is, mostly, side-stepping cinematics full of S&M nuns and returning to the realm of slapstick. For an M-rated game about killing people, it has less teeth than Tom and Jerry. Its violence is cartoonish, however realistically rendered, like elaborate, imagination-augmented action figure fights. This isn't a new turn. In the last release, Absolution, you could still don a bright yellow chicken costume and creep around. But the new episodic release format (you can pay $60 outright at launch, but only start with the prologue/tutorial and the large Paris level) means story -- at least so far -- is as ignorable as ever. Which is fine. Hitman is a better toy box anyways. |
Plants vs. Zombies Heroes is a mobile collectible card game Posted: 10 Mar 2016 07:45 AM PST PopCap is taking a break from tower defense for a crack at collectible card gaming with its next Plants vs. Zombies title for iOS and Android, PvZ Heroes. The project "began over two years ago as a paper card game prototype" designed in creative director Devin Low's spare time. The studio is testing the single- and multiplayer game in a few territories -- Brazil, Romania, and New Zealand for now -- ahead of a worldwide release which is supposed to happen "soon." Free-to-play? Yup. "Players will be able to purchase new heroes and characters via in-app purchases, but everything in the game can also be earned and collected without spending a penny. We won’t have any cool-downs or other barriers to play as much or as long as you want." There's just a few seconds of gameplay in this trailer, but you can find more character-specific footage in the several accompanying clips. I'm with the guy who says Super Brainz is the best. As a fan of Plants vs. Zombies in general, I'll probably try this out of curiosity. |
Friday Night Fights: Elsa Fest 2016 Edition Posted: 10 Mar 2016 07:30 AM PST [Update: We have currently raised $265 of our $400 goal. Thanks to everybody who has donated!] [Longtime community member Elsa has it a little rough right now, so we want to show our support by doing something she loves: playing video games together. Let's make this week's Friday Night Fights the biggest we can! And feel free to donate some cash to her if you have some to spare. -Darren] One of the founding principles of Destructoid has always been community. Trying to bring fellow gamers together. Comments, CBlogs, Quick Posts, convention meet-ups, NARPS... even the forums, god help us. It's increasingly hard to maintain communities given how fractured and fractious gamers have become in the last couple years, but that just makes it all the more important to highlight the people who have maintained a steady and positive influence. Especially when they're going through hard times. If you've spent any time on Destructoid, you've probably bumped into Elsa. Be it from her comments or her blog, she's been a fixture here for long enough that our Community Manager and Phallus Connoisseur, Mike Martin, looked up to her when he first started here. OG Dtoid, for real. Join date: 01/25/09. No joke. In fact, Elsa was one of the people I looked up to when I started as well. It's hard not to. She's smart, together and not afraid to speak her mind. Whenever someone would go off on an apoplectic fit, she'd be there with a well reasoned, well thought out take on the subject. She was also instrumental in making Friday Night Fights the time-tested staple it's become. So, when she broke the news via CBlog that she's currently dealing with two different kinds of malignant cancer (What? One wasn't enough? Show off), PappaBear/GrumpyDad came to us with an idea: a community-funded gaming care package. Specifically, a PS Vita (possibly with some games or accessories depending on how much we can raise) so she can game on the go. Also, in honor of everything she's given to the community over the years: a really big friggin' party on Friday night. A Friday Night Fights for the record books. A bacchanal of games (and also booze, if that's your thing). |
Cyberpunk 2077 will be 'huge,' 'much greater' than The Witcher 3 Posted: 10 Mar 2016 07:15 AM PST That plucky The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt couldn't contain its enthusiasm for its upcoming PC/Xbox One/PS4 project, the long-teased Cyberpunk 2077. And it's not like this enthusiasm was unbound in an interview or developer dairy. Nah, this was President Adam Kiciński and Studio Head Adam Badowski unfettered in a dang 2015 financial results conference, according to Dual Shockers. Because of The Witcher 3's success, Cyberpunk 2077 must be, "even better, even bigger, even more revolutionary," which echoes claims from last year that the RPG would be, "far, far bigger than The Witcher 3." Despite rumbling we might get 2077 by the end of 2016, CD Projekt has "a lot to do." It's worth noting that the CD Projekt-provided English translation that Dual Shockers is reporting said 2077 is, "a long ways away from the premiere," but a Polish speaker who was listening in says CD Projekt might've actually said that we aren't a long ways from the premiere. Kiciński's "amazingly large ambitions" for Cyberpunk 2077 extend to CD Projekt as a whole. He wants the studio to expand from 400 employees to 800 employees, divvied up into four teams, some of which would focus on, "penetrat[ing] new gaming segments." He also noted that "between 2017 and 2021" the studio has two major games -- Cyberpunk and another, unannounced blockbuster RPG -- and some other unannounced projects. Because of the response (critical and sales, I assume) to Witcher 3, CD Projekt is not looking to change or worried about it's long development cycles, either, which is nice. Don't go Ubi'ing up the place. CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077 to Be “Better, Bigger, More Revolutionary” Than Originally Intended [Dual Shockers] |
Confused as to what Battleborn is? Watch this 'Incursion' trailer Posted: 10 Mar 2016 07:00 AM PST When Randy Pitchford is retired, looking back at his Amazing Jonathan-esque magic mansion, he'll always remember the time he hyped up Battleborn like no one had ever hyped a game before. It's a tad confusing, but cutting down the marketing bullshit, Battleborn is basically just a shooter. There's a campaign of sorts, 25 characters that can level up, and a PVP mode that features three gametypes, including Incursion. You can watch the latter below, which is basically a base siege. Yep, it's a shooter. |
So long Azmodan, hello AzmoDUNK Posted: 10 Mar 2016 06:45 AM PST I love it when Blizzard is willing to get totally silly with its character designs, and judging from the reaction to the upcoming Legendary Azmodunk skin for Heroes of the Storm, I'm in good company. It's going on sale starting April 12, 2016, but there will be a pair of opportunities to get it for free. Attendees of April's Heroes of the Dorm Heroic Four and Grand Finals will score the skin, as will the top 500 winners in the at-home Heroes of the Dorm Bracket Challenge. Nice. Aside from outfit, basketball, voice-overs, mount, and basically everything going on here, I particularly like how even the summoned demon minions look the part. They wish they were a little bit taller. Also, someone on reddit went ahead and layered Quad City DJ's on top. Bless this baller mess. Rule the Court with Azmodunk [Battle.net] |
Pre-order Assassin's Creed movie tickets for $1,200 Posted: 10 Mar 2016 06:30 AM PST The Michael Fassbender (Fish Tank) led Assassin's Creed movie isn't out until December, which is a long time from now, kind of. But that doesn't mean that Ubisoft doesn't want to start selling you tickets right this minute. $1,200 tickets. I mean, how else did The Division become Ubisoft's best-selling launch to date? "Long before the Assassin’s Creed trailer premieres and nine months before the movie’s debut, Kernel’s is offering passionate fans of the franchise a first look of key elements from the film, including the hoodie and gauntlet worn by Callum Lynch’s/Aguilar (played by Michael Fassbender), limited-edition collectibles, apparel and accessories, the film script, advanced movie tickets, tickets to San Diego Comic Con and more." What else more? Well, "packages range from $15 to $1200," and on the high end you get, "an exact 1:1 scale replica" of the "15th century crossbow" from the film. Only 20 of them are being made and each has a letter certifying its authenticity as a replica of a fake old weapon. You also get a digital copy of the movie script. Look, I'm not going to tell rich people how to spend their money. Go ahead and drop $3,000/month on candles while the rest of us struggle to make rent. You'll only be that much sweeter-smelling when we eat you. But I do recommend instead a double feature of 13 Assassins and that new Creed movie. Or even Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas' Assassins and a Creed (band) album. |
Overwatch just got a big update recently, with a new map Posted: 10 Mar 2016 06:00 AM PST The cat is out of the bag -- Overwatch is coming on May 24, with an open beta period preceding its release on May 3. This is a pretty big launch for Blizzard, as it's the studio's first new IP in years, and on top of that, it's a competitive shooter. Earlier this week it updated the closed beta build, and it's all good news for the game's future. A new map, Illios (based on Greece) has been added, and looks lovely. Also there are a few tweaks, including aesthetic and mechanical changes that you can view here. Overwatch Beta Patch Notes [Battle.net] |
Killing Floor 2 now has full Steam Workshop integration Posted: 10 Mar 2016 05:45 AM PST Last week I wrote that Tripwire Interactive is bringing a competitive mode to Killing Floor 2. Some of you are excited to see how that turns out, and others would prefer the game to stick to its cooperative roots. Today, Tripwire announced that people who like to murder on the ground (eh? eh?) will be able to utilize full Steam Workshop integration and start downloading user-generated maps and mods. That means if you aren't happy with the upcoming Versus mode but still want more content to play, there's going to be an abundance to choose from as folks start tinkering with the game. Tripwire has found a way to make Killing Floor 2's workshop a little more intuitive than most games on Steam. Clients and servers are able to subscribe to maps and mods so that they'll automatically stay up-to-date. This cuts out the re-direct server in the middle, so people that want to enjoy player-made content can spend less time fiddling with updates. Tripwire President John Gibson says that this type of implementation leads to "a complete circle that makes it so much easier for modders to get their content in the hands of players," so hopefully this leads to a ton of creative, accessible mods and maps. The update is already live, though there's not a huge wealth of stuff to check out yet. Some of the maps that won Tripwire's Grindhouse mapping contest are available, in addition to some recolored monsters. Some of the mods that Tripwire made (like Boss Challenge and Pop the Cyst) should be coming online relatively soon as well. This should make waiting for the next official update easier. And here I was, thinking I was going to a break from this game. |
Sony admits Oculus Rift 'may have better VR' Posted: 10 Mar 2016 05:30 AM PST At its $600 launch price, the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset from Facebook (hah) will cost more than the PlayStation 4 console did at launch -- and that's without the expensive computer needed to take advantage of the Rift. In a lengthy Polygon piece about PlayStation VR, Sony Computer Entertainment vice president Masayasu Ito said, "If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR. "However, it requires a very expensive and very fast PC. The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4. It's more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable. This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It's for the mass market." It's more akin to Sony saying "yeah, PS4 ain't doing 4K, buy a PC if you're hankering" than the company waving any sort of white flag before it even gets out the gate -- or announces a price. But I can't imagine it comes close to the Rift's $600 price tag, let alone that of the god damn $800 Vive. Adoption (and software driving further adoption) will be paramount in getting VR off the ground in the next couple of years. The cheap solution might end up being the smart money if all the "VR is the future" soothsaying has even an ounce of truth. The making of PlayStation VR [Polygon] |
Dark Souls III confirmed to run at 60 FPS on PC Posted: 10 Mar 2016 05:20 AM PST Friends, we have been baited and switched. In a good way, though! When does that ever happen? There should be a more pleasant term for that like "bait and given a back rub." Anyway, we had been previously told that Dark Souls III will run at 30 FPS on PC. From Software cleared that up today and said "Umm, no actually, it's twice that." The developer's actual quote was "Forget what you've heard. Dark Souls III will run at 60 FPS on PC." Some people thought this might be the case when From Software revealed the game's PC requirements late last year. The given specs were low enough that some assumed getting it to 60 FPS would be easy enough. This time, the developer's giving you that right off the bat; no need to wait for modders to do it for you. @DarkSoulsGame [Twitter] |
Fallout 4's 1.4 update is coming to consoles this week Posted: 10 Mar 2016 05:00 AM PST Ah Fallout 4. You had so many good things going for you, but Bethesda kind of...forgot how to do a good story over the years? Obsidian held up the series honorably with Vegas but where are these awesome Morrowind and even Oblivion/Shivering Isles-esque storylines? Alas, if you're still big into Fallout 4 and happen to play on a console, Bethesda is prepping patch 1.4 as we speak. It'll go live by the "end of the week" on PS4 and Xbox One, and the update is already available on PC. You can read all about its various fixes here. The Automatron DLC is still coming this month for $9.99, though the publisher has not named a date yet. BethesdaGameStudios [Twitter] |
Retro City Rampage is out on iOS today, supports controllers Posted: 10 Mar 2016 04:45 AM PST Surprise! Developer Vblank Entertainment sent me over a note this morning that Retro City Rampage DX was stealth launched on iOS devices this morning. It features controller support as well as touch controls, and runs on everything iOS 6.0 or above. Vblank notes that nothing was removed, and every minigame is still intact. Update 1.01, which adds more precise swimming controls, is already on the way. I gave the port a go, and was rather surprised with how well it operated, even without a controller. There's a virtual pad for movement on the left, and buttons will pop up on the right with contextual actions (like hijacking a car, shooting, or jumping) when needed. They're all clear and well animated, and the vehicular controls are precise. Again, this is the same version as the original, including all of the fixins, and the (disclosure!) Destructoid cameos. You can pick it up here for $4.99. |
Legend of Zelda Wii U 'change in flavor will be like going from Japanese food to Western style food' Posted: 10 Mar 2016 04:30 AM PST The Legend of Zelda for Wii U missed its 2015 release and didn't show up in Nintendo's 2016 financials forecast either, though current scuttlebutt is guessing Zelda Wii U launches at the end of this year, right with Nintendo's new "NX" console and an "NX" port of Zelda Wii U (much like Nintendo did with Twilight Princess). A "busy" Eiji Aonuma joked with Famitsu, as translated by Kotaku, "When we did Skyward Sword for the Wii, at the end stages of development, I was in charge of the characters' dialogue and the in-game text. And, now as well, it's like it was then. I had to work on text today, too. "But, the game has really taken shape, and things have gotten easier. That means things are progressing well." Aonuma says the theme for the next Legend of Zelda is "something new" -- "like Ocarina of Time was." And we've known that for a while, save details (except that it'll avoid Skyward Sword tutorial overload). Of course, harking back to OoT is a bit weird when you follow with: "I think the base of our secret sauce has always been Ocarina of Time. But this time, the change in flavor will be like going from Japanese food to Western style food. Perhaps, players will be surprised." |
PC Port Report: Tom Clancy's The Division Posted: 10 Mar 2016 04:00 AM PST It took me a long time to get excited for The Division. After the naff faux-voice chat in the E3 reveal and the heavily hand-held demo I played at EGX, it wasn’t until I played the beta only a few weeks ago that I considered it might actually be something worth checking out. Since then I’ve been really excited to see how the final release works on PC. I’m pleased to say that not only is The Division a (mostly) solid experience, it’s also a new highpoint in Ubisoft’s often spotty offerings on the platform. |
The Division really does have Assassin's Creed's skeleton Posted: 10 Mar 2016 03:45 AM PST Look, I joke that all of Ubisoft's big, AAA, 3D games are the same. And you know what they say about jokes: you are one. And you know what they say about you: there's a little bit of truth to every one of you. Therefore, transitively, there's some truth in jokes, too.

Japanese man spends $6,065 on mobile game in one night Posted: 10 Mar 2016 03:30 AM PST Granblue Fantasy is huge in Japan. Brett wanted to know what the gigantic (air)ship covered in cat girls (models) was in one of Tokyo Game Show's massive halls last year and it was a Granblue Fantasy booth. And, incidentally, given its name, it looks like a sexier, bustier Final Fantasy Tactics. The mobile (iOS/Android) game had seven million downloads last new year and developer Cygames ran a promotion to double the chance of players getting rare character Anchira from one of its 300 yen (under $3) crystals. Normally it's a 3% chance. People flipped. Millions of new players downloaded Granblue Fantasy for some reason. A Japanese man, "Taste," started buying crystals trying to unlock Anchira like a mad man feeding bills into a rigged claw machine. Over the course of one day he spent $6,065 on 2,276 attempts and finally got Anchira. The New Year's promotion flipped a switch. People who spent slightly-less-but-still-ludicrous sums put together 2,000 signatures on a petition to alter Cygames' practices. The company wound up acquiescing, offering credit to select whiners and instituting a 300-try-cap for getting the item you want. After $800, you get it regardless. And after Cygames started crediting folks, according to Bloomberg, "shares of the nation’s mobile gamemakers tumbled by a total value of more than $1 billion." Fear of a burst bubble. But revenue, in large part from these blind box type of purchase (buy crystals, then open them and hope they yield what you want), in the Japanese mobile space has been on the rise. Cygames' parent company CyberAgent is Japan's third leading mobile game company. Some of these games have as high an average revenue (from all paying users) of $373 a month. Imagine spending $373/month on the same game. Some of you lucky, not-San-Francisco-living jerks probably don't even pay $373/month for rent. Right? Admittedly I'm a little skewed and don't know geography. Regardless it is less than here, which is too damn much. $6,065 Spent in One Night Shows Dark Side of Japan's Mobile Games [Bloomberg] |
