New Games

And the winner of the Games Journalism Award...not a games journalist!

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 03:00 PM PST

The 5th Annual New York Game Awards took place tonight in Arizona. Nah, nah. It was in New York. I fooled you for a second, though, I bet. The event is put on by the New York Videogame Critics Circle, which counts Samit as one of its members. Sports!

Anyways, the award show gave out its inaugural Game Journalism Award, meant to "serve as an affirmation of the value of games journalism, and as a denouement for the hard work and creativity demonstrated by the journalistic and critical community throughout the year." That's the year 2015, by the by, which I am still writing on all my checks!

Cara Ellison took home the 2015 Game Journalism Award. Her opus last year, to go with regular columns and other great writing, is Embed With… The crowd-funded series was a roughly year-long stint of spending each month with a new game developer for some meaty, embedded journalism. It's damn good and has since been compiled into a book you can buy, Embed with Games: A Year on the Couch with Game Developers, while the original online versions are still up as well.

Another interesting thing about the games journalist whose work was so revered by her peers that she won this inaugural award? No longer a games journalist!

Here's her goodbye from last May. It's a good read and bitterly amusing in its matryoshka nesting of a goodbye from Kieron Gillen, who spent 10 years as a games journalist (PC Gamer, then co-founded Rock Paper Shotgun) before splitting in 2010. As Gillen wrote then, "games journalism isn't a career for life yet." Clearly it still isn't as Ellison had to jump ship, too, despite peerless work. If the best in the industry can't find sustainable work, who can? If you're wondering why the field is such a revolving door of people.

Get your name in early for these Undertale figures

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 02:30 PM PST

Look, I'm going to level with you, internet, I haven't actually played Undertale yet. You don't need to boo and hiss at me, I know I'm scum. I've wanted to play it since it came out, but after seeing these amazing Undertale figurines (especially the little dog in armor) available for pre-pre-order at Fangamer, I think I'm going to move it up the backlog to the very next game I play.

You can't actually purchase these figures yet, but you can submit your name, email, and figure preference to be notified when they are available for pre-order. I'd roll my eyes, but apparently the demand is so high for these little guys, Fangamer needs as big a head start as it can get.

There's also a plushie Toriel available if you like your collectibles cuddly. I haven't even played the damn game and I have to admit it's pretty cute. No wonder people won't shut up about it.

Rez, Lumines dev's puzzle RPG 18 coming west

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 02:00 PM PST

If you're a fan of Testuya Mizuguchi's work (Rez, Lumines, Space Channel 5, Child of Eden) and enjoy smartphone games, well buddy, let me tell you, 2016 is looking like one hell of a year.

In addition to a pair of new Lumines games coming out later this year, publisher GameSamba has announced plans to bring Mizuguchi's trippy mobile puzzle RPG 18 to North America by "Q2"

Go ahead and complain about mobile games in the comments, but I'm in the market for something new to play in line at the post office, and that art is pressing all the right buttons. A game that can evoke Persona, Catherine, and The Cat Returns all at once, is clearly doing something right.

Rocket League comes to Xbox One next week with bonuses

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 01:30 PM PST

As promised, Rocket League is coming to Xbox One soon. Developer Psyonix plans to self-publish its darling soccer-with-cars multiplayer game on Wednesday, February 17 for $19.99. I'm thrilled for a new audience to discover if it's as good as folks say (it somehow is).

This port includes three DLC packs (Supersonic Fury, Revenge of the Battle-Cars, and Chaos Run) at no extra cost, amounting to even more cars and customization items. Xbox One players are also getting a pair of exclusive vehicles based on Gears of War and Sunset Overdrive among other Xbox-centric cosmetics like the Overcharge Rocket Trail shown above.

According to Psyonix, Rocket League is now "11 million players strong." I'd say that's deserved.

Feminist Frequency makes new Twitter Trust and Safety Council

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 01:00 PM PST

I love Twitter.

Love it.

But the quasi-public nature of it means it's kinda of like plopping down at a crowded beach. You don't expect fellow beach goers to come up to you and interrupt conversations between you and your friends, or tell you that they're going to kill you later tonight, but it happens. On Twitter, I mean. Beach people are usually pretty nice in San Francisco, except for the assholes from the golf club arcoss the street that ride their horses down at Fort Funston and leave pounds of shit everywhere and threaten the safety of all the cute pups.

This is exacerbated by online anonymity but not the lone reason, given how many people post extreme, offensive comments via their personal Facebook page, like "i'm going to kill your family while you're at work" or "ciabatta is the best bread." Truly disgusting.

Amazon's new game engine has a 'zombie clause'

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 12:30 PM PST

Normally, the Amazon Web Services Terms of Service is an interminable slog of legalese and jargon, a veritable Dagobah-esque mire only decipherable by super ambitious law-school kids. And with the addition of Amazon's new Lumberyard game engine come new rules to follow, including a clause that lays out Lumberyard usage in the case of a zombie apocalypse.

Yes, nerds sure do love their zombies, even going so far as to legally define a zombie apocalypse for the sheer purpose of a joke you would only notice if you bothered reading the Terms of Service. That's the kind of commitment I can get behind.

The clause can be found in point 57.10, restricting the use of Lumberyard in "life-critical or safety-critical" systems, like "medical equipment, automated transportation systems, autonomous vehicles, aircraft or air traffic control, nuclear facilities, manned spacecraft, or military use in connection with live combat." Basically, Amazon is covering its ass in the event someone builds, say, a self-driving car using Lumberyard and the car ends up killing a whole bunch of people.

Of course, you can throw all that out in the event of "a widespread viral infection transmitted via bites or contact with bodily fluids that causes human corpses to reanimate and seek to consume living human flesh, blood, brain or nerve tissue and is likely to result in the fall of organized civilization." This epidemic will need to be defined by the Center for Disease Control, or a "successor body," like that one guy from the first season finale of The Walking Dead.

So, hypothetically, a scrappy band of nerds could use Lumberyard to program robots (military use in connection with live combat) to fight zombies, and it would be legal as defined by Amazon's terms of service. I call this hypothetical film...Lumber(ing)yard. You're welcome, Hollywood.

Illusive multiplayer shooter Screencheat hits PS4, Xbox One in March

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 12:00 PM PST

Following its PC release of Screencheat last year, Samurai Punk is bringing the unconventional first-person multiplayer shooter to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 1, 2016. It'll launch at $14.99.

In the game, players are invisible, but you can see everyone's screen to approximate where they're at on the map, and weapons perform one-hit kills to keep the action flowing. It's a beautiful mess.

The console ports will pack in the PC version's post-release content, including eight-player support, AI bots for local and online matches, and extra maps, modes, and weapons.

Crimson Singles is Tinder, but for Destiny

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 11:30 AM PST

Five days ago a user on the Destiny reddit page suggested, "Someone should make a Tinder app for Crimson Doubles." Over the weekend, that become a reality as reddit's sjmorrow and sicemsam teamed up over three days to make Crimson Singles. For those that don't know -- as a family man, I had to do some research -- Tinder is a popular online dating app.

The website apes Tinder's "yes" or "no" swipes on potential partners. "You can register an account, set your Gamertag or PSN ID, and create your guardians in the app. Once you have guardians created on your profile, you can 'Activate' a guardian for matchmaking. You will then be shown a card stack of all other guardians that are also looking for matches. Once your activated guardian expires, you will need to activate another one."

The site is still in "alpha pre-release," but if you struggle to make friends that want to play video games with you, feel free to swipe away.

Well, look at that: A soccer player with a Poke Ball shaved into his head

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 11:00 AM PST

I don't get to talk about sports enough around here. I suppose that's to be expected when you write for a video game site. But, I like discussing sports and am left without a place to do it. So, I'll look for any excuse and make any logical stretch.

Hey, look at this soccer player with a Poké Ball shaved into his head!

That player is French star Paul Pogba who plays for Juventus in the Italian Serie A. (If the team name sounds familiar, it's maybe because that's the club I used to beat Steven up and down the pitch at Tokyo Game Show last year.)

Did you see the Poké Ball shaved into his head? Poké Balls are devices from the popular video game franchise Pokémon!

Serie A is shaking out mostly as expected, with heavy hitters like Napoli, Juventus, Internazionale, and AC Milan all toward the top of the table. It's nothing like the English Premier League where unlikely Leicester City is running away from the competition and reigning champion Chelsea is in a season-long free fall.

Gigantic developer Motiga announces layoffs

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 10:30 AM PST

Just over two months after its most recent layoff announcement, Gigantic developer Motiga has announced another round of redundancies. Motiga CEO Chris Chung made the announcement on the site's official blog earlier today, citing the studio's "financial situation" as the reason behind the departures.

"While we intend to continue supporting Gigantic game services for as long as we are able, the reality is that a decision of this magnitude will impact all departments across the studio, an impact that will be felt by our community of beta testers as the services they depend on will operate without the key staff on hand to support those services," Chung wrote.

Motiga is currently looking for investors to support the company while it continues work on Gigantic, but it did not secure funding in time to protect the jobs of those affected. According to fellow Destructoid writers, the NDA on the Gigantic beta recently lifted, allowing both press and ordinary players to speak openly about their experience with the game.

Gigantic was recently shown during E3 2015 at Microsoft's press conference, where the game was touted as an Xbox One console exclusive. It's currently unknown how much -- if anything -- Microsoft spent on the game, but it seems like it wasn't enough to keep the studio afloat in the meantime.

Exercise your Sony-given rights and vote now for the next free PS Plus game

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 10:00 AM PST

Voting in the United States is a very haves versus have-nots thing right now. Only a few people have gotten to cast ballots lately, and they're the citizens in the probably lovely states of Iowa and New Hampshire. Those of us stuck in less enviable states can only dream of a day when our chads maybe hang.

Sony's softening the blow by giving some of us some control. PlayStation Plus subscribers can vote on one of March's free games, as we learned last week. Now the polls are open so you can do your civic duty.

The candidates are Action Henk, Assault Android Cactus, and Broforce. Back your favorite by voting in the dedicated PS Plus section of the PS4 interface. The polls close on February 22. Just like with politics, make sure to breathlessly and futilely try to convince other people they're wrong about their opinion. The comments section seems like a good designated spot for that.

Dynamic difficulty tuning is coming to Killing Floor 2

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 09:30 AM PST

Killing Floor has a fairly hardcore following: these folks build wikis to know every single damage value in the game, and pore over enemy animations so they can know the best way to take them down. The Hell On Earth difficulty is where they test this knowledge, and I've gotten my ass kicked many times alongside other dedicated players.

With Killing Floor 2, Tripwire Interactive recently announced that a new mechanic called the Game Conductor will be able "to increase or drawback the intensity of the wave within some limits" based on player performance. The thought process behind this new system "is to find a sweet spot where the players feel challenged but not over or underwhelmed." Not everyone is happy with this idea, as they enjoy the rigidity of the current difficulty, and feel that if you're getting wiped, you need to get better. As for myself, I'm tentatively interested; even if this only changes the composition of enemies in each wave, that might help the game from becoming stagnant.

The first pass of the Game Conductor should be coming in a quality of life patch coming this week or next, and there's full list of changes here. Also of note is that the demolitionist perk is being looked at to provide "options for better crowd destruction or to specialize as a larger zed exploding machine who may want to conserve ammo," and that Sharpshooter's Lever Action Rifle and Crossbow are in the rendering process now. Can't wait to see that sweet LAR in action.

The Overwatch beta is back and it brought loot

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 09:00 AM PST

The closed beta for Blizzard's multiplayer shooter Overwatch returns today in the Americas and Europe, and it has upgrades: a new progression system for cosmetic rewards, a capture-point mode called Control with a pair of maps, and the option to play against AI opponents.

That's all well and good for folks who have access, isn't it? Lucky!

The full patch notes are over here. Blizzard also detailed how progression and loot (cosmetics like icons, skins, emotes, and victory poses) will work in a separate post. You'll gain experience for your overall Overwatch account by completing matches with any character, then earn a Loot Box containing four randomized, colored-by-rarity items upon leveling up.

After seeing the immensely satisfying unlock animation, I want it. All of it.

The first batch of Oculus Rift PC bundles go up for pre-order next week

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 08:30 AM PST

Now that full-blown VR Fever is upon us, many people find themselves in the regrettable position of having an under-performing PC. Running the Oculus Rift requires a decent rig, which isn't something that everyone who wants VR necessarily has. Predictably, Oculus has some partners who will sell you a brand new Rift-compatible PC.

In a blog post, Oculus announced that pre-orders will open next week on February 16 at 8am Pacific for PCs that are guaranteed to work with the Rift. Asus, Alienware, and Dell are the first companies to trot these machines out. The most affordable PC is from Asus and runs $1,049; the most expensive is an Alienware that tops out at $2,549.

However, these prices can be slightly discounted if you're willing to lump the $600 Oculus Rift in. The Rift bundles offer a $100 to $200 savings on the PC. The cheapest bundle is that above-mentioned Asus with the Rift for $1,499. Prices obviously go up from there.

Conveniently, those who already pre-ordered the Rift can get a retroactive discount if they want to pick up one of these Oculus-ready PCs too. That's done by checking order status and opting into an applicable partner offer.

These won't be ready to ship by the Oculus' initial release date, though. Only a few people will be a part of the initial March 28 shipment, and they're the ones who pre-ordered the earliest. Instead, these PCs and the bundles will start shipping in April.

The Humble Ubisoft Bundle adds Blood Dragon

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 08:00 AM PST

I'm with Brett: the lowest tier in the Humble Ubisoft Bundle is worth springing for if you haven't played Call of Juarez: Gunslinger or Grow Home or Rayman Origins. It's one dollar for all three!

The bundle's next tier up (around $8) is also worth considering, especially as of today now that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory have joined the likes of Far Cry 3, Splinter Cell Blacklist, and Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China. I adore that neon bow and arrow.

With the exception of Gunslinger and Grow Home, which are redeemable on Steam, everything else is attached to Ubisoft's PC distribution platform uPlay. It's sort of like that mildly irritating cousin you don't particularly care for that you're obligated to put up with every few years.

Here's your first look at Dragon Quest Heroes II

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 07:30 AM PST

Square Enix has shared the first images of Dragon Quest Heroes II, and it doesn't look dramatically different from its predecessor. That isn't too surprising, considering its predecessor debuted just a year ago and looked perfectly good. Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, I suppose

The action game is in development for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita, and is expected to arrive in Japan on May 27. A western release hasn't yet been announced at this time.

Street Fighter V will have legacy controller support after all

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 07:15 AM PST

This is one case where I don't mind seeing a developer go back on something they've said. Spanish website MeriStation broke the news that Street Fighter V is going to come with a day-one patch to add in support to make PS3-era fightsticks work on the PS4, and internally, our own Chris Carter backed it up (look for his review next week). Normally I'd get my back up about a 5.9GB day-one patch, but when it saves $150 or more on a new fightstick, I think I can handle it.

This is fantastic news for anyone excited about SFV but not so excited about replacing their peripherals. Fighting games are already a hard enough genre to get into without pricing out potential players.

Before GameTrailers shut down, it re-scored Bloodborne a perfect ten

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 07:00 AM PST

The games industry was saddened yesterday to hear of the closing of GameTrailers, a media staple for the past 13 years. People like to say "it's the end of an era" anytime anything popular ends, but the phrase actually feels apt in this instance. GameTrailers' business model revolved around creating original video content; that doesn't sound noteworthy in 2016 but was an incredibly bold move in 2002. It trusted its foresight and intuition enough to pursue the video format despite technological limitations screaming that this isn't the smart money.

In a heart-over-brain way, one of GameTrailers' final acts was emblematic of the attitude that got the site started all those years ago. Before closing its doors for good, GameTrailers updated its Bloodborne review to a perfect ten. Originally, it was given a 9.6.

While significant enough in its own right, this update has some added oomph. Bloodborne now has the distinction of receiving the only ten GameTrailers has ever awarded. According to Metacritic, a handful of 9.8s is the highest the site had scored anything until now.

Whether Bloodborne should be the game to receive this distinction is a moot point (although it is very good). What matters is that GameTrailers went out as it came in -- doing what it believed in and not really caring what convention would dictate. You'll be missed, GameTrailers.

BioWare writer David Gaider moves to Beamdog

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 06:30 AM PST

Long-time BioWare David Gaider (Baldur's Gate II, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age) recently departed from the role-playing game studio in search of a "new challenge." As of this week, he has joined the Edmonton-based Beamdog as creative director.

"Originally we advertised for the position of senior writer, but when David contacted Trent about the position, we upgraded the role," said Beamdog in its announcement post. "He brings 17 years of experience to our little team and we couldn't be happier to work with him. David will lead the writing team and direct new creative endeavors for the company."

Beamdog has become known for Baldur's Gate in recent years, so this is an apt move for Gaider -- one that should please fans of that series. The company currently has an expansion for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition called Siege of Dragonspear in production for a release this year.

The Division's open beta to begin on Feb 18 for Xbox One, Feb 19. for PC and PS4

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST

Hot on the heels of the short closed test a couple of weeks ago, Ubisoft has announced when everyone will be able to get their hands on The Divison’s open beta.

For Xbox One players, the open beta will begin on February 18. PS4 and PC players will, unfortunately, have to wait an extra day for theirs, with it starting on February 19 instead. The beta will then close on February 21, so you won’t have exactly long to give it a try.

The open beta will include a new mission that wasn’t in the closed one, and taking part in it will also unlock an ‘exclusive reward’ in the full release of the game on March 8.

To celebrate this announcement, Ubisoft has released a new trailer showing off the various factions you’ll meet in post-apocalyptic New York, which you can watch up top. They’re all very angry looking, so you might want to shoot them in the face if you get the chance.

Final Fantasy IX out now on mobile, PC soon

Final Fantasy IX is now available on iOS App Store and Google Play for a whopping $17.

Square Enix announced the PlayStation 1 classic was on its way to PC and mobile devices back in December. There's no word on when, exactly, the publisher plans to release the PC version, but according to the role-playing game's Steam page, it's listed for a "early 2016" launch.

The mobile port includes a few new features. In addition to high-definition visuals, this version of the game adds accouterments like a fast-forward setting and optional random encounters.

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter is launching on May 27

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 05:30 AM PST

Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter, Frogwares’ newest Sherlock Holmes game, has finally been given a release date: May 2017, 2016 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Publisher BigBen Interactive has also unveiled the box art, which you can see in full detail below. I know it’s still a guy looking mean holding a gun, but when you compare to something like Doom, it’s definitely up there as one of the better recent covers.

According to statements made back when the game was announced, Frogwares is going for a more dramatic, action-fueled focus this time than they have previously, which might be interesting. Crimes and Punishments took a lot of visual inspiration from the BBC’s popular Sherlock, whereas The Devil’s Daughter seems to almost be going for a Robert Downey Jr. movie style, which will be really cool to see.

I really hope The Devil’s Daughter is good. Crimes and Punishments had a fantastic atmosphere and visual style that was let down somewhat by some weird deduction mechanics. I said the deduction was cool when The Devil's Daughter was announced, but going back to them recently reminded me of how many nonsensical leaps in logic you have to make sometimes...

If The Devil’s Daughter manages to improve on that at all, we’re easily looking at the best Holmes game to have ever been made.

Get up to speed on Far Cry Primal with this '101' trailer

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 05:00 AM PST

Some people follow news on Far Cry closely, taking in every nugget of information out there. Others might be vaguely aware of Far Cry Primal's existence and premise, but don't know much else past that. This video is for the latter group.

It's a brief overview of what to expect from the first-person stone ager. The protagonist has access to stealth, weapon crafting, animal taming, and some base building. The part that sticks out to me in the trailer is when the narrator describes the "unlimited creativity," to which I append in my head "so long as what you want to create is a pile of blood and viscera."

Heads up for those watching at work: the video contains some brief nudity. It's just a half-second of bare breasts covered in body paint, but you never know who might be looking over your shoulder while you watch the YouTube, or while you spend five minutes making a usable header image out of it only to decide later that it wouldn't be okay to have it up on the front page of your video game blog.

Curious how Attack on Titan looks on PS3 and Vita?

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 04:30 AM PST

Attack on Titan is officially Koei Tecmo's first PS4-centric development project, but the game is also coming to PS3 and Vita by way of a downscaled port. While we've seen the PS4 build quite a bit since the studio went public with it, footage of the other ones haven't really been shown prominently.

The publisher is killing two birds with one stone here in the below video. I have to say if you can help it, getting KT titles on the newest platform possible is the way to go -- it's not just the enhanced visuals that you want, but the stable framerate when tons of action is happening on-screen.

Review: Dying Light: The Following - Enhanced Edition

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 04:00 AM PST

Dying Light surprised the heck out of me last year. While I mostly agree with Chris about the various faults and clichés found within (you can read my thoughts here, from back in my before-Destructoid days), it was well-made, and I found myself eager to return when an expansion was announced.

I wasn't immediately convinced that adding a dune buggy to a parkour-focused horror game was the best idea, but The Following proves that Techland didn't just get lucky with Dying Light.

Someone made a robot that automatically beats Puzzle & Dragons

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 03:30 AM PST

A reader this morning pointed me towards a pretty cool video by Japan's "Junya Sakamoto" over on YouTube, where a robot automatically deduces, and then solves puzzles in Puzzle & Dragons. If you watch the clip you'll actually see the program, "pazudora," divine the solution (or the best possible outcome), and then hand it off to the robot, which then taps the screen and makes the appropriate move.

In retrospect, I probably could have just solely wrote "Japan, ladies and gentlemen," in this post and you would have been satisfied.

Get your skills in order before The Division launches

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 03:00 AM PST

I'm surprised at how many people rallied around The Division beta, as the community-based buzz around the RPG elements really took shape. A lot of my Destiny friends are planning on quitting for it, in fact.

A player named Miodec has also taken a shine to the game, and has crafted a Skill Calculator app for everyone to plan out their character with before launch. It also handles synergies too, based on all of the info provided in the beta.

Things may change of course but for now, it's not bad! I wasn't crazy about the beta period myself but the game as a whole was a lot better than I thought it was going to be.

Amazon unveils new CryEngine-like Lumberyard

Posted: 09 Feb 2016 02:30 AM PST

Amazon hasn't really taken off in the game space yet, even after acquiring the recently-on-fire Double Helix, but it's still trying. Its latest project actually looks pretty damn cool -- a new in-house engine called Lumberyard.

It's a free cross-platform 3D engine for developers, and boasts AWS Amazon Cloud support. Alongside of this it is providing GameLift, which is a multiplayer game service. The fees lie in the per-player costs for GameLift and any Cloud-based needs you have for Lumberyard. It'll be interesting to see if it takes off or if anything cool is created from it.

All I know is that there's a very Bloodborne looking mockup in the landing page (in the gallery below), so someone should so something with that.

Get to know Street Fighter V's F.A.N.G better

We already know F.A.N.G is a poopy pigeon, but what else is there to learn about him? A lot actually!

As one of the most interesting new characters in the series, I love his poison-based attacks, and his combos look pretty insane. He's described as the most outlandish and unconventional character in the game, so you know Capcom is likely going to ensure that he's balanced to at least be a viable pick in tournament play.

Downwell is definitely coming to Vita and PS4

Indie champion Downwell is preparing to make a move beyond the PC and mobile realms. In addition to its Android release earlier this year, Devolver Digital is preparing to publish the game on PS4 and Vita.

This has been confirmed by way of Sony's Japanese indie sizzle reel on its official YouTube account, which details a number of popular eastern localizations, one of which is Downwell. Goat Simulator, Rocket League, Mighty No. 9, and others are also featured in this five minute video.
