Thirsty for details about Song of the Deep? Drink up this video

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 03:30 PM PST

Us folks at Destructoid didn't attend PAX South this year, so we've been keeping our collective eyes on any information that continues to dribble out now that it's over. Windows Central attended the event, and was able to snag Insomniac for an interview about the upcoming Song of the Deep (which we recently learned is being [bafflingly] published by GameStop).

The gentleman from Insomniac talks about the various abilities the main character Merryn will use, including a magnetic claw and energy torpedoes. Song of the Deep is said to be 50% combat, and 50% puzzle solving. The team has been wanting to work on a Metroidvania for a while, and I can't get enough of 'em, so I'm ready to play it this summer.

Happy Birthday, Mewtwo, you abomination

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 02:30 PM PST

Happy birthday to Mewtwo, the most terrifying and fucked up Pokémon in existence.

Years ago on this day, a pregnant Mew gave birth to the creature in a lab on Cinnabar Island, where a team of scientists had tampered with its genetic material in horrific experiments prior to its birth.

Of course, the demonic test tube baby had the last laugh, eventually using its unnatural powers against its creators to escape and destroy the secret facility where they had held it captive.

If anyone deserves a slice of cake and some gifts on his special day, it's this tortured soul.

What changes can we expect from an official Mother 3 localization?

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 11:00 AM PST

We've waited nearly 10 years for Nintendo to officially localize Mother 3. The wait has been so long, it's started to seem like an impossibility. However, due to some rumors over the past week, it's beginning to feel more and more likely that a western release might finally be happening. Especially when you factor in EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings' recent arrival the Wii U eShop, Lucas joining Super Smash Bros. roster, and the 10th anniversary of Mother 3's Japanese release fast approaching, it has us wondering if this might this actually be the year.

Of course, with any localization (especially coming from Nintendo), many fans are worried about the possibility of censorship. Mother 3 is one of the greatest video games I've ever played, and I'd hate to see too much of its content changed, but due to certain events and characters featured in the game, that seems inevitable.

DC Universe Online rolls out cross-platform play

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 10:00 AM PST

As of this week, DC Universe Online now supports cross-platform play between PC, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. That means you'll be able to play alongside folks who own the game on a different platform, "including in groups, in leagues, in On Duty content, and in the open world." I may not be into this game, but that's a feature worth commending all the same.

Now, to be clear, your individual account will remain associated with the platform it originated on. Everyone can play together, but characters or purchases made on PC, for instance, can't be transferred over to consoles "for business and technical reasons."

Daybreak also has an Xbox One version of DC Universe Online in production for a spring release.

The meaning of The Witness (Part 1 of 3)

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 09:00 AM PST

Hi - this is Part 1 of an essay about the game The Witness! This part tries to establish what The Witness is trying to convey, then, I discuss how well the message is communicated.

I'm Sean Han-Tani-Chen-Hogan, and am currently developing the adventure platformer game, Even the Ocean, with a friend, Joni Kittaka. We also made the game Anodyne.

Spoilers from here on out

I've spent around 24 hours in The Witness, stopping after the Platinum trophy. I streamed my entire playthrough. I didn't fill up the obelisks. It was fun!

But, enough about me. The three parts of my essay are:

  1. The Witness's message
  2. The popular perception and influence of The Witness
  3. The drawbacks of singular vision games

The first part is mentioned above.

The second brings up how the way we discuss and perceive The Witness has been warped by the hype and media portrayal of the game and its primary creator.

The third talks about downsides of other games with creators with singular visions, and how they can lead to fans and the media constructing 'genius narratives.'

I will post each part separately over the coming days - this is just Part 1!

Review: A Boy and His Blob

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 08:30 AM PST

A Boy and His Blob, a 2009 "re-imagining" of the NES game of the same namesake (and recently re-released on current platforms), is an interesting case study. When does retro game design and a devotion to source material become an active hindrance to a new product? Similarly, when do inevitable concessions also hurt it?

I'd posit that A Boy and His Blob manages to misstep on both sides of this line.

Umihara Kawase has returned to Steam

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 08:00 AM PST

The Umihara Kawase trilogy is now back on Steam, Degica has announced.

The trio of bizarre platformers disappeared from Valve's store in December after their publisher Agatsuma Entertainment went out of business earlier that month. Shortly after that, Degica swooped in to save the day, initially planning to re-release the games on January 28. That didn't happen, though. It turned out transferring ownership rights wasn't as simple as the company expected.

"A mixture of technical oddities and legal paperwork slowed it down," a Degica representative told Destructoid last week after the publisher missed its previously scheduled launch date.

In any event, it's all sorted now and folks can download and purchase the games once again.

The hardcore Destiny community forgets why we play

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 07:00 AM PST

I've been playing a lot of Destiny lately -- late to the party, I know -- and going deep into the rabbit hole almost requires players to frequent r/DestinyTheGame or some other similar community site. Without it, I'd never know about a lot of exotic gear, or the Hung Jury with an insane roll this week, or where to find Calcified Fragments, or that the spark runner can backflip into the rift for extra points. I would be blissfully ignorant without it.

One thing really strikes me about the community there. Sure, the denizens are helpful to their fellow Guardians, but holy cow do they complain about loot drops a lot. Every day there's a new post about how loot drops for X activity need to be "fixed." For those people, I have this advice: stop, take a deep breath, and ask yourself, "Why am I playing this game?"

Breath of Fire III launches on PSN next week

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST

More than a decade after launching on PSP in Japan, Breath of Fire III will arrive on PlayStation Network in North America next Tuesday, February 9, according to the latest PlayStation Blogcast.

Back in 2013, Capcom's then-senior vice president Christian Svensson announced the company was looking into a North American release. While he referred to the possibility as a long shot, he promised to "never say never." Svensson is no longer with the company, but it seems someone kept the torch burning in his absence. It may have taken a long time, but it's finally happening.

Capcom says the title will be available for $10 and compatible with both Vita and PSTV.

Square Enix might bring that Adventures of Mana Vita port to the West after all

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 05:00 AM PST

Every time I've written about Adventures of Mana, the new Final Fantasy Adventure remake, just about every one of you have clamored for Square Enix to localize the PlayStation Vita version.

In case you haven't been following this story, Square Enix released the role-playing game on mobile platforms across the planet earlier this week, but bizarrely kept the Vita port exclusive to Japan.

But it looks like that might change. Your rabble rousing may have forced Square's hand.

"We've been listening to your feedback," reads a note from the development team, "and because of your passion for the game, we're going to look into making a PS Vita version of Adventures of Mana for the West. We can't guarantee we'll be able to make this happen but we will see what we can do. We’ll let you know if we have any news, so watch out for future updates and thank you for your support."

The company suggests you leave a comment here if you want to see that Vita port come west.

Spicy weekend deals on XCOM 2, Doom, and Bayonetta 2

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 03:45 AM PST

After last month's lull, it's weekend for games. New titles are launching left and right, like XCOM 2, which seems to be fairing well with critics and regular folks alike. If you're looking to pick it up, the best deal is a 23 percent off discount at GMG.

Surprisingly, the Digital Deluxe edition is outselling the standard package at the UK-based retailer. Perhaps the the discount has something to do with it.

Also at GMG, the new Doom is now available for pre-order. The latest entry in the storied FPS franchise was recently confirmation for a May 13 release later this spring. GMG's site-wide 20 percent mark down works on the game, and if you're so inclined, you'll receive an easy $12 off a Doom Steam key.

Finally on the console side, Bayonetta 2 is re-releasing on single physical disc in less than two weeks. Priced only at $30, this is one of most reasonably priced games we've seen since, well, forever. There is also a wicked pre-order deal for Bayonetta 2 via Dell, which is offering a $15 gift card with for pre-ordering the game.

PSA: Fire Emblem Fates does not feature dual audio in the west

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 01:40 AM PST

I woke up today to tons of emails and PMs, asking one simple question -- does Fire Emblem Fates have dual audio? So I quickly hopped over to the Extras menu, and found that no, it does not.

It's curious, as the option for Japanese voices was probably one of the best parts of Awakening, but alas, they're not here for all three versions of Fates. I reached out to Nintendo for comment to see if we have hope for a patch, but haven't heard anything back. Having said that, the dub isn't bad at all, even the Azura singing voice.

Expect more coverage on Fates in the next few weeks, and for now, you can see how the amiibo functionality works.

These Bulbasaur planters are pretty adorable

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 01:00 AM PST

I've never been into gardening, but these Bulbasaur planters have convinced me to give it a shot.

The design is just too perfect; after seeing it, I had to snap one up right away. If you're interested in following suit, you should also check out this Oddish design from the same artist, Anqi Chen.

I wasn't as taken with that one, but maybe you prefer the Weed Pokémon to the Seed Pokémon.

Return to PopoloCrois gets March 1 release date

Posted: 06 Feb 2016 12:00 AM PST

Return to PopoloCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale launches on March 1 in North America.

While XSEED will release the "farming-flavored" role-playing game in both physical and digital form across North America, Marvelous Europe is only planning it as a Nintendo 3DS eShop exclusive.

The crossover between the PopoloCrois manga series and Marvelous' Bokujou Monogatari games first released in Japan last June and sold more than 46,000 units in its opening week.

The Legend of Legacy is out now in Europe

Posted: 05 Feb 2016 11:00 PM PST

The Legend of Legacy is now available across Europe, NIS America has announced.

I wasn't too fond of the role-playing game when it launched in North America last fall, finding it to be a repetitive experience without much to do besides explore and fight the local wildlife. But if you're a hardcore fan of the SaGa series and don't mind RPGs that are lacking on the story front, this one might just win you over with its pleasant visuals, soundtrack, and combat system.

Sound like your cup of tea? Maybe check it out. But if you don't love it, don't say I didn't warn you!

Quantum Break sure has changed over the last four years

Posted: 05 Feb 2016 04:00 PM PST

I haven't been following Quantum Break too closely, even though I love Max Payne andAlan Wake. What I've seen so far has felt a bit generic, lifeless, and grey, so I'm hoping that Remedy's traditional bizarre touch is hiding under the thick film of Microsoft's marketing. That marketing has certainly changed over the last few years, as you're about to see.

DualShockers attended a lecture in Paris at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie (those are exactly the words I would type if I was trying to bullshit that place's name in French) where Creative Director Sam Lake presented this video consisting mostly of 2012 footage ofQuantum Break. This is before they announced the new actors (Shawn Ashmore, Dominic Monaghan, Aiden Gillan, Lance Reddick) last year.

Really hoping that the final version of the game comes out this April and wows us all.
