XCOM 2 will be compatible with the Steam Controller at launch Posted: 04 Feb 2016 02:00 PM PST While playing a review copy of a game that may or may not rhyme with Frying Dwight, a pop-up appeared to announce that Firaxis and Valve are implementing Steam Controller support for XCOM 2. If you have one of them fancy doohickey's, you can:
This is considered to be the initial implementation, so there might be kinks to work out. If you haven't picked up the Steam Controller yet, it'll be bundled with XCOM 2 for 40% off. If you've already purchased the game, you can still get the discount on the controller. XCOM 2 Gets Native Steam Controller Integration [Steam]

Bayonetta is a showstopper in Super Smash Bros. Posted: 04 Feb 2016 01:00 PM PST Here's the step-by-step experience I have had with Bayonetta's character in Super Smash Bros. First, take her into the training room and understand how her moves work. Then, play some matches against the CPU. Feel confident, then go online. Immediately get hit by an opponent's Bayonetta with a gigantic combo. Welp. Read more... |
Ninja Senki DX looks mega good, man Posted: 04 Feb 2016 12:30 PM PST Tribute Games is bringing Ninja Senki DX to PC, PS4, and PS Vita on February 23. This is an expanded version of a rather good freeware action game from 2010, which, from our prior coverage, it sounds like a number of us have played and enjoyed. While I know I generally liked it at the time, my specific memories have since faded (but the scars still linger). DX flaunts more modes, multiple endings, and a remixed soundtrack. At $4.99, it seems like a fairly safe bet, but Ben will have a full review for us closer to release.

If this is really the new Doom box art, it sucks Posted: 04 Feb 2016 12:00 PM PST Conan O'Brien will be playing the latest iteration of Doom on his show's Clueless Gamer segment tonight with some players of the sports ball who are in the big game. In a tweet promoting the show, the box art below was shown, though it hasn't been confirmed as the final retail version just yet. Read more... |
Nintendo nixes plans to watch you sleep Posted: 04 Feb 2016 11:30 AM PST Nintendo no longer wants to watch you sleep and -- wait, did he write "nixes" in reference to shelved new Nintendo hardware ideas while the new Nintendo console is being referred to as the "NX"? What a clever writer, that fellow. Anyways. "In regards to the Quality of Life [device], which was not mentioned in any of today’s questions, we do not have the conviction that the sleep-and-fatigue-themed [device] can enter the phase of actually becoming a product," Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said during an investors Q&A session translated by Wired. "We no longer have any plans to release it by the end of March 2016." It took four years for Nintendo to formally throw in the towel with the Wii Vitality Sensor. Maybe the company is learning. Or, well, despite the sleep monitor being shelved, Nintendo, "still believe[s] there are things we can do in the general category of Quality of Life." Please sign this petition for Destructoid to send me to Witcher School Posted: 04 Feb 2016 11:00 AM PST There's a real-life LARP Witcher School where you can learn how to fight with swords and bows, make potions, and combat humans dressed in monster suits. It's held at Castle Moszna in Poland, and this March 17-20, they'll be accepting international students. I need to go to this. I need a camera crew to follow my every move, ensuring that I never ever break character (until the whole game is done, when I laugh my ass off of this plane of existence). My only wish is that I could grow my hair out faster to get me more into the role-playing mood. I didn't see any Gwent in the video below, so I might just print out all of the cards and bring a full set so I can destroy any challengers. Anyway, here's the petition that I just created. I don't know why the picture is sideways, but that shouldn't stop you from signing it. I need this. You need this. Do the right thing. One last note: is that Russell Crowe 38 seconds into the first video? \

Casual dragon board game Tsuro out on iOS now Posted: 04 Feb 2016 10:30 AM PST Tsuro is the type of game that hits the table during parties at the ol' Casa de Nakamura. It caters to people who aren't especially experienced with modern board games, it doesn't take up a lot of table space, and it seats up to eight at a time, so it works well to complement snacks and drinks in a social setting. As of today, that experience is available on iOS, even for people without friends in real life. It features pass-and-play as well as online multiplayer, and even has some extra modes that weren't included in the original rules for the cardboard version. Probably the best news about it: no microtransactions. An Android version is planned for the near future. Read more... |
Look at this XCOM 2 release schedule map while you wait for our review Posted: 04 Feb 2016 10:00 AM PST XCOM 2 is almost here! This handy 'lil map will help you determine when you'll be able to start sending your soldiers (that you named after your best buddies, you monster) to their inevitable deaths. I think I've made that joke before, but that's okay! Don't fact check me, just pretend I am always original and great and amazing and things'll work out much better between us. You probably want to know where our review is. Nic working tirelessly right now to finish it as quickly as he can while still maintaining a critical eye. I've been hearing solid praise about it from peers, so I know what I'm doing at 9 PST tonight. XCOM 2 Pre-Load is Now Live [Steam]

This limited-edition Uncharted 4 PS4 is $400 Posted: 04 Feb 2016 09:30 AM PST Sony is preparing a limited-edition 500GB PlayStation 4 bundle in time for the release of Uncharted 4 on April 26, 2016. The console is gray blue, with a touch of gold lettering on the front that says "Sic Parvis Magna" (greatness from small beginnings) and Nathan Drake plastered on the top/side. The package also comes with a lovely looking DualShock 4 and a physical copy of the game. It will cost $399.99 in the US and $499.99 in Canada when it launches on April 26. Europe is getting a similar bundle with a 1TB console the same week. I have my eye on that controller which, thankfully, will be available separately in "early March" for $64.99. Sony will also begin selling a gray blue Gold Wireless Headset for $99.99 at that time. Read more... |
F.A.N.G is a poopy pigeon in Street Fighter V Posted: 04 Feb 2016 09:00 AM PST I know what you're thinking with Street Fighter V (PS4, PC) less than two weeks from release: everything is mined. There was the big reveal that Arcade mode will have standard text and art stories to be followed by a post-launch DLC (free) story mode with over an hour's worth of in-game cinema. I talked to producer Yoshinori Ono and had my dreams of a Third Strike-style reboot (or, dare I dream, a new 2D Street Fighter) crushed. The last launch fighter plus DLC plan was revealed. Here are all the modes. Oh buddy, lotsa stuff. But let's rewind to that new fighter, F.A.N.G. I went to a Street Fighter V preview event early in the week with the first chance to test out the new challenger and boy are my arms tired. Read more... |
Square Enix's Adventures of Mana is out now Posted: 04 Feb 2016 08:30 AM PST Adventures of Mana, a remake of the Game Boy classic Final Fantasy Adventure -- the first entry in Square Enix's Mana series, is now available worldwide on iOS and Android for $14 / £10.50 / €14. Of course, there's also a PlayStation Vita version, but for some reason it's exclusive to Japan. Read more... |
Review: COUGAR 450M Optical Gaming Mouse Posted: 04 Feb 2016 08:00 AM PST I’ve never had much luck with gaming mice; either there’s too many moving parts and I break it, or the shape doesn’t fit my hands and feels uncomfortable to use. So when I got Cougar’s 450M ambidextrous gaming mouse, I didn’t quite know what to expect. Fortunately, what I found was a mouse that is competent – if by no means perfect – that I would happily recommend to anyone looking for mid-range mouse with a lot of extra features, provided they can look past the few glaring problems. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir hits Europe in June Posted: 04 Feb 2016 07:30 AM PST Vanillaware's Odin Sphere remake is coming to Europe this June, NIS America just announced. The PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita action RPG will be available both at retail and via the PlayStation Store with English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish text options. NIS also plans to sell a special, premium-priced "Storybook Edition," which includes a PS4 copy of the game with a metal slipcase, an art print, t-shirt, and a 64-page hardcover art book. Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir is set to launch in North America on June 7, courtesy of Atlus USA. Read more... |
Posted: 04 Feb 2016 07:00 AM PST The 1950s were considered the golden age of campy sci-fi films, with aliens often invading Earth alongside giant animals, and, of course, robots. Fortified tries to recreate the feeling of those films in a third-person cooperative base defense game, and does an alright job at it without being all that impressive. Read more... |
It's you versus the planet in The Solus Project Posted: 04 Feb 2016 06:30 AM PST This new trailer for the sci-fi single-player survival game The Solus Project shows off a lot of new content, and confirms some details that will surely make more than just me happy. Specifically, the developers confirm that while it is a survival game, the emphasis is more on exploration, and settings can be tweaked to make it a bit easier for those of us (like me) who loathe survival games. Apparently there may not even be enemies in the game, as it is you versus the planet with its extreme weather system. Sounds like a unique premise with an interesting setting. They certainly have me interested in trying it out when it launches on Steam Early Access in two weeks on February 18. The Solus Project is also coming to Xbox One Game Preview on February 26, with a final release planned for May of this year.

Posted: 04 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST I've said it before, but I really enjoy this era of gaming. Sure, there were a lot of classics in the retro era, but many were few and far between from the same usual suspects. Now we have talented developers ready and willing to create something and simply release it on Steam without having to go through the rigorous licensing processes from console publishers. A lot of those titles are based on retro foundations and would have felt right at home if they were released decades earlier, as is the case with Blitz Breaker. Read more... |
Far Cry Primal does the Time Warp Posted: 04 Feb 2016 05:30 AM PST Far Cry Primal has a new trailer and it's really well-produced. It's a reverse look at some of the major eras of combat in human history, all culminating in a showdown with a CGI sabretooth tiger. But, it also reminded me of "Time Warp," and now I've been listening to that all morning long. It's just a jump to the left, then a step to the right...

Modern Where's Waldo-like Hidden Folks is mesmerizing Posted: 04 Feb 2016 05:00 AM PST Certainly, the drawings shown here are works of art on their own, but Hidden Folks really comes alive in motion. It's a far cry from the last Where's Waldo game I remember playing, which featured a series of low-res pixel art static images on the NES. I don't even know what I'm supposed to be looking for here, but that doesn't make the looking any less cool. Hidden Folks is not only bustling, it's interactive, so there's more to do than just click on the thing after you've found it. The screenshot above had "WordPuzzle" in the file name, so it's probably safe to assume there's some more thinking to do than just scanning an image for a MacGuffin. Hidden Folks is set to release some time this year on iOS, Mac, and Windows. Read more... |
Learn how to play Pokken Tournament with this instructional video Posted: 04 Feb 2016 04:30 AM PST I think Pokken Tournament is pretty easy to pick up, and within a few sessions of playing it in arcades I had the hang of it. But if you haven't been able to take the trip out to Japan to experience it, this video is the next best thing. It basically gives you a quick rundown of its directional attack system (think Smash and you're on the level), as well as a few mechanics like assists and specials. It's in Japanese, but there's plenty of prompts that literally show you which buttons are being pressed. Pokken will be released worldwide on March 18, 2016. Read more... |
Minecraft is overhauling its website with some new features Posted: 04 Feb 2016 04:00 AM PST I still remember buying Minecraft in 2009, and the original site really hasn't changed all that much. But Mojang (and thus, Microsoft) has really been making strides since the acquisition, finally releasing the game on Wii U, and it's forging ahead with the Windows 10 edition of the game. The newest step in the plan is to overhaul its site, which is now in beta format. Once everything is done you'll be able to do everything you can on the old portal, like alter your account settings and access your PC copies. It's crazy how well kept the old site was, though -- I was surprised to log in over half a decade later to still find my account intact! Beta [Minecraft.net]

Oh my god this Metal Gear mod for Fallout 4 is great Posted: 04 Feb 2016 03:30 AM PST The best part of Fallout games are often the mods. And with the settlement system and the texture packs involved, there have been some really great ones for Fallout 4. This one made me laugh repeatedly though, as the "All in One" mod will morph your hero or heroine into a bonafide Metal Gear Solid V character. There's a number of suit options for Big Boss, as well as a Skull Face and Quiet costume. You can even have Quiet as a companion, and utilize the classic bandana item. Nintendo Download: Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition Posted: 04 Feb 2016 03:00 AM PST The Wii U is getting a few gems today, one of which takes the form of DLC. As far as full releases go, Shutshimi and Resident Evil Wii Edition are in, as are FreezeMe and Peg Solitaire. Super Smash Bros. is also getting two new fighters, Bayonetta and Corrin, as well as a level for the former and some new Mii costumes. This is the last bit of DLC that will be released for Smash, and even though there's rumors of an NX version, it'll probably just be a GOTY edition of sorts to help launch the system. 3DS is also getting that same Smash DLC, in addition to Alphadia. There's not a whole lot there, but the 3DS has so many great eShop games that it can afford to rest for a bit. I hope the system picks up steam this year, but with Fire Emblem Fates just around the corner, it's looking good. Read more... |
Mirror's Edge Catalyst is getting a closed beta, and you can register now Posted: 04 Feb 2016 02:53 AM PST Before Mirror's Edge Catalyst releases on May 24, you have an opportunity to take it for a test drive and kick the wheels a little bit. Well, "test run" might be a more appropriate term considering this game is all about free-running. Whatever it is, you can try before you buy and it'll (hopefully) help the launch go more smoothly. EA just opened registration for a closed beta for Mirror's Edge Catalyst across all platforms. Signing up is simple -- pick a system, give an email address, and you're all set. Of course, note that PC requires having Origin installed. It isn't said what part of gameplay this beta will feature, but there's a good chance it'll focus on the multiplayer components. Catalyst doesn't have standard multiplayer offerings, though; it has asynchronous multiplayer where in-game actions affect others' experiences. EA mentions that participation requires a "persistent Internet connection." There's no set date for the beta yet either. However, given the game's semi-soon release date, it can't be too far off. Whenever it is, this should be a good chance to get in some warm-up laps before the running's for real in late May. Closed Beta [Mirror's Edge Catalyst] Read more... |
Capcom will host a livestream event for Street Fighter V on the heels of its launch Posted: 04 Feb 2016 02:30 AM PST Street Fighter V is nearly here after months of hype and beta testing, but Capcom isn't done promoting it just yet. The publisher has announced that they will hold a special presentation event on February 10, which basically sums up launch plans, as well as hosting a few special matches. It starts at 6:00PM PT in the US, and may also have some additional post-launch info. From what I've played of Street Fighter V (both in the beta and at TGS), I'm pretty stoked. See Nippon Ichi Software's new game in action Posted: 04 Feb 2016 02:15 AM PST Curious what Rose and the Old Castle of Twilight looks like in motion? Well, you're in luck. NIS has released the first footage of its upcoming puzzle game, and, yep, it sure does look a lot like its predecessor, htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary. But this one's a tad less colorful and sees a giant (rather than a firefly) accompanying a young girl on her mission to escape a fortress full of death traps. The PlayStation Vita exclusive was originally planned for an April 28 release in Japan, but has since been bumped up to launch April 26. No word on if or when NIS America plans to localize it just yet. Read more... |
Is Nintendo preparing a Mother 3 localization? Posted: 04 Feb 2016 02:00 AM PST Mother 3 has been a long-awaited localization -- perhaps one of the most requested in the history of gaming. Gamers have been assuaged by fan translation efforts, but a real, actual release would get this classic into the hands of more people, which is what we all really want. According to multiple rumors floating around, we may get just that. In addition to Emily Rogers (whose Twitter account was deleted after sharing the news), a Nintendo-focused writer who has made predictions in the past, another source has come forward at Eurogamer, adding credence to the murmurs. It would make sense, as this is officially the game's 10th anniversary since its launch on the Game Boy Advance in Japan -- and wouldn't you know -- the Wii U supports GBA games, and has hosted several Mother releases in the past few years. The most popular translation effort has also been offered to Nintendo for free. The fact that Lucas was brought in the new Smash Bros. as DLC is definitely a sign of sorts. Sure they could have left him to die in Brawl, but making him relevant again has some sort of meaning. Note that the anniversary is officially in April, but this could also be a prime E3 announcement.

Toukiden 2 looks, well, like this Posted: 04 Feb 2016 01:30 AM PST Toukiden 2 was announced at Tokyo Game Show last fall, but little else has been revealed about Omega Force's upcoming demon-hunting game in the months since then. That is, until now. Koei Tecmo has opened the open-world action title's official website and unveiled the first images of the in-game visuals in the process -- since the debut trailer was purely cinematic. Toukiden 2 is expected to hit Japan in 2016 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita with cross-play and cross-save compatibility. No plans for a western release have been revealed. You can find our review of the first game, Toukiden: The Age of Demons, right here. Toukiden 2 [Koei Tecmo] Read more... |
Doom is coming May 13 with a skeletal collector's edition Posted: 04 Feb 2016 01:00 AM PST Hello everybody, I am the harbinger of Doom, id Software's Bethesda-published reboot of the brutal first-person shooter shown off last year. Turns out Doom'll turnout worldwide on May 13. That's for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game that's all about, "badass demons, big 'effing' guns, and moving really, really fast" will also offer a $120 collector's edition featuring the Revenant, "on an LED-lit base with internal, slow-spinning turbine from the UAC facility on Mars." Hmm. "really, really fast"? "Slow-spinning"? Pre-orders also come with armor skins for multiplayer.

Nintendo confirms new Zelda: Twilight Princess HD details Posted: 04 Feb 2016 12:30 AM PST In addition to the officially confirmed amiibo dungeon for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, Nintendo has shared a few new features for the game this morning. As well as inventory management, the GamePad can also be used to instantly transform into wolf form without pausing. Miiverse stamps have been confirmed in addition to the obvious Off-TV feature too. There's even a new item called the Ghost Lantern, which glows when a Poe is near. Thankfully, there's also another huge change when it comes to the tedious Tears of Light sections, as only 12 tears are required, rather than 16. Hero Mode will be present with double-damage in effect (with no health pickups available), and the wallet limit has been increased. Of course, using the Ganondorf amiibo will unlock a Hero Mode+ of sorts with four times the damage. All of this sounds pretty good, especially the Tear mechanic change, as it was the clear-cut worst part of the game for me. Here's an updated roundup of what to expect from the HD version.

Toby Fox is looking into a Wii U Undertale port Posted: 04 Feb 2016 12:15 AM PST Undertale, that bullet hell RPG meme fuel that the Internet loves or loves to hate, has so far only been available for PC gamers, but that has not stopped gamers from clamouring for information about possible ports. Talking on Twitter today, developer Toby Fox acknowledged that he has talked with Nintendo about a Wii U port of the game, but would need someone else to help port the game to the system.
