Games Gearbox needs to learn from for Borderlands 3 Posted: 27 Feb 2016 10:00 AM PST Here we are, more than three years removed from the launch of the most recent Gearbox-developed Borderlands game, Borderlands 2. Right now the studio is focused on the hobby-grade, meta-growth Battleborn, but after that releases in a few months, where will the studio's focus go? Okay, yeah, probably Battleborn DLC. But after that? Borderlands 3. Borderlands 2 was a triumph in my eyes. It took the concept and world I loved from the first game and addressed most of the issues I had with it (and even some I didn't even realize existed until they were fixed). Gearbox is going to have to step it up in order for Borderlands 3 to have that same wow factor. Hopefully, the developer has been paying attention to these games over the past few years, because they hold valuable lessons to be learned. Read more... |
Namco's Dark Souls mobile spinoff looks like rubbish Posted: 27 Feb 2016 09:00 AM PST Ah, so this is what Bandai Namco trademarked: an endless runner. Some of you were spot on. Slashy Souls is a mobile title made possible in part by GameStop -- a company supposedly "not attempting" to be a publisher -- that will release on Android and iOS tomorrow, February 28. According to Polygon, Bandai Namco went ahead and whipped up this Souls-inspired game without placing From Software on development duties. Here's the first footage: I'm not sure who this is for, exactly. Even if it looked okay, which I don't think it does, Souls fans aren't hurting for games reminiscent of the series -- they're all over the independent scene. Site update: Quick note on site bugs and Disqus comments Posted: 27 Feb 2016 08:50 AM PST How's your mom doing this weekend? I hope you're not making her cook. You should order some chinese food and tell her how much you appreciate her, and explain to her how to resolve her issues with Destructoid's new site updates. To prepare you for this I've outlined some of the common problems a few of our community members have been reporting: HIT THE JUMP LIKE IT'S 2006 Read more... |
Final Fantasy XI shuts down on consoles next month Posted: 27 Feb 2016 08:30 AM PST In case you are somehow still playing Final Fantasy XI on PlayStation 2 or Xbox 360, well, it's about time to download the PC version or, you know, actually find something new to play. Square Enix has confirmed plans to cease support for the game's console versions on March 31 at 6am PST, after which time the servers will no longer function on those platforms. For now, the faithful have the option to continue their adventures in Vana'diel by switching over to the Windows edition. However, it's unclear how much longer the lights will stay on. While Square Enix is still rolling out minor updates and is even working on a mobile version with Korean studio Nexon (Maple Story, Dragon Nest), the party has to end sometime, right? Unless it doesn't. Who knows? Maybe Final Fantasy XI will outlive us all. Final Fantasy XI [Square Enix]

Experience Points .31: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Posted: 27 Feb 2016 08:00 AM PST Experience Points is a series in which I highlight some of the most memorable things about a particular game. These can include anything from a specific scene or moment, a character, a weapon or item, a level or location, a part of the soundtrack, a gameplay mechanic, a line of dialogue, or anything else about the game that is particularly noteworthy and/or awesome. This series will no doubt contain spoilers for the games being discussed, so keep that in mind if you plan on playing the game for the first time. This entry is all about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Feel free to share some of your own favorite things about the game in the comments! Read more... |
In the right hands, Dreams is mesmerizing to watch Posted: 27 Feb 2016 07:30 AM PST For months now, Media Molecule has been previewing its PlayStation 4 creation game Dreams on live streams. Despite a keen interest in the title, I admittedly haven't kept up, but this week's video about building three cities in an hour has me eager to hit the archives for past shows. Media Molecule's Anton and Kareem know the toolset well enough to create cool-looking shapes rapidly. Individual blocks join to form convincing buildings which, before long, begin to look like a cityscape straight out of Dark City. It's captivating to see it all come together. While it's rare for me to stick with creation-driven games long term, LittleBigPlanet included, I can see Dreams becoming almost like a hobby. I hope this year's beta is welcoming. Pressed for time? Here's how the cities turned out. That last one was made in ten minutes. Read more... |
Halo World Championship NA Finals were my first MLG event, won't be my last Posted: 27 Feb 2016 06:01 AM PST I've always been a big fan of the Halo series, and I especially love the multiplayer for Halo 5: Guardians, so when I heard the MLG Halo World Championship North American Finals were taking place in Columbus, Ohio, literally under a mile from where I live, I had to go. Last Sunday, I woke up early and made the three-minute journey to the relatively new MLG Arena to experience my first-ever professional eSports event. I regret nothing. Read more... |
Grab the Fallout 4 season pass before its March price hike Posted: 27 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST Unless you've been living in a vault, you probably heard about Fallout 4's season pass coming out next month. You may also have heard the asking price is going up from $30 to $50, but that change won't happen until next week, on Monday, March 1. So, this weekend is your last chance to nab it at the lower price ($24, after a handy 20 percent off coupon). Use that same stacking coupon for a hot deal on Superhot. The new "time moves when you move" shooter is 10 percent off during release week, dropping the cost from $25 to only $18. We mentioned this last night but it's worth noting again, but another noteworthy deal for the weekend is a 12-month Xbox Live Gold subscription for only $35 at Groupon. The promo code is only for "new" users only, but if you use a different email/household address, it should work. Finally, there's a nice PlayStation 4 bundle featuring Battlefront, Street Fighter V, and a Sony Silver headset for only $359.99. While these are two titles with season passes (probably why Newegg decided to bundle them together in the first place), that's still a great value. Read more... |
Mind Zero dungeon crawls to PC this March Posted: 27 Feb 2016 05:00 AM PST Once upon a time, it seemed as though many Japanese game studios were perfectly content to ignore the PC market. But times are a-changin'. More and more all the time, eastern developers are porting their wares from consoles to computers in an effort to broaden their reach. The latest game to embrace this trend is Mind Zero, the Persona-esque dungeon crawler from Acquire (Akiba's Trip, Tenchu, Rain) and ZeroDiv is coming to Steam next month, on March 8. The role-playing game originally released for the PlayStation Vita in Japan on August 1, 2013, and was published by localization outfit Aksys Games in the West the following year. For more information on Mind Zero, you can check out our full review right here.

Senran Kagura: Estival Versus hits PS4, Vita next month Posted: 27 Feb 2016 04:00 AM PST It wasn't too long ago that XSEED Games boss Ken Berry referred to the prospect of localizing the Senran Kagura series as "a scary proposition." And yet, just a few years later, four of these games have been released in the West -- and a fifth is right around the corner. Yes, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita brawler Senran Kagura: Estival Versus is heading to North America on March 15 as a digital release. There will also be a limited physical edition available that packs in a 108-page art book, a two-disc soundtrack, and a set of ten holographic cards with a copy of the game for an additional $10 on top of the base $50/40 asking price. The action game will also be launching in Europe that same week, on March 18, with a variety of boxed editions. You can find more information about those via the Marvelous Europe store. Senran Kagura: Estival Versus has been available in Japan since March 26, 2015. Read more... |
Kanye West's next album is titled Turbo Grafx 16 Posted: 27 Feb 2016 03:00 AM PST Kanye West has announced via Twitter that his next album is tentatively titled "Turbo Grafx 16" after one of his "favorite gaming systems" from his childhood. The full text of the tweets are as follows: "My next album is titled 'Turbo Grafx 16' as of now... just on some super nerd vibes... one of my favorite gaming systems when I was a kid... Blazing Lazers was probably my favorite game on that console ... My boy Mali that I spoke about on the song Drive Slow actually had a Neo Geo in real life bro... We actually played Spy Hunter at my mom's house!!!" West is, of course, talking about the Turbo-Grax 16 which according to Wikipedia was the first console released in the 16-bit era in 1989, and was joint-developed by Hudson Soft and NEC. The console was best known for the Bonk series, as well as having one of the best Castlevania games, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. Kanye's favorite game for the console, Blazing Lazers, was a pretty decent space shoot-'em-up that features some decent beats; beats that I hope we hear West spit over soon. This announcement comes shortly after Kanye revealed the first footage of the game about his mother ascending to Heaven. I can't make this shit up. Kanye West [Twitter]

Dragon Front brings collectible card gaming to virtual reality Posted: 26 Feb 2016 03:59 PM PST I am absolutely not a collectible card game dude, but I don't need to be to understand the innate appeal of that type of head-to-head, competitive experience in virtual reality. Living cards on a 3D board? Yeah, sure, cool. That more or less describes Dragon Front, an upcoming high-fantasy-meets-dieselpunk online multiplayer title for Oculus Rift and GearVR. It's in development at High Voltage Software, which may sound familiar depending on your gaming tastes circa 2009. The studio is best known for The Conduit, a notable first-person shooter for Wii, but it has more recently contributed to series like Saints Row and Mortal Kombat. Do we wanna hit those bullet points? Let's do it real quick. There are "80 characters, 80 different encampments, and more than 100 spells" spread across the game's factions. See? Painless. Now you can shut off your brain and hear some cards taunt each other. It's no Magic the Gathering, Hearthstone, or even Yu-Gi-Oh, but Dragon Front does have the advantage of being among the first to market in the VR space. I can see it doing all right.
