Knack 2? Is that you? Could it be true? Posted: 13 Feb 2016 10:30 AM PST Knack 2 is maybe a thing that is might be happening, if an animator's resume is to be believed. As spotted by NeoGAF, the following comes from 3D animator Mindy Liang's LinkedIn account: Read more... |
Cliffy B: 'I woulda f**ked up Silent Hills' Posted: 13 Feb 2016 09:30 AM PST In a real Sliding Doors, "what could have been" kind of moment, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima apparently once asked Cliff Bleszinski if he would work with him on Silent Hills. The timeline on when this offer was extended is unclear, but presumably this was long before Konami decided to slit Silent Hills' throat and kick its corpse into a mass grave with Castlevania and Metal Gear. Cliffy says he was flattered but declined the offer, saying he A) didn't want to move to L.A (ouch!), B) wants to work on new IPs, and C) "woulda f**ked up SH."
Have to respect a guy for knowing his strengths and weaknesses. I'm not sure how many people would have turned down an offer to work with Kojima. Can you imagine if he had though? That would have been a line-up of Kojima, Guillermo Del Toro, Junji Ito, and Bleszinski, I can't even picture what kind of Frankenstein of a game those minds would have cooked up together, but I know I sure as hell would have played it. Doom's single-player campaign is 13 hours long Posted: 13 Feb 2016 08:30 AM PST If you were worried Doom would follow in the footsteps of other modern first-person shooters with a five hour jaunt of a campaign, you can sleep easy now. According to id Software, the average length of the campaign clocks in at a hefty 13 hours. That's a whole lot of time to listen to a chainsaw gummed up with demon guts.
Hopefully Doom will have some interesting things to fill that time. I'm excited to play a drop-dead gorgeous reimagining of such an iconic title, but if it's 13 hours of nothing but wandering around and repeatedly examining the insides of various hellspawn, that might get old quick. No one wants a game to be too short, but being too long can be just as bad (thinking of you Alien: Isolation). Doom [Twitter]

E3's PC Gaming Show is coming back this year Posted: 13 Feb 2016 07:30 AM PST One night at E3 last year, I distinctly recall sitting in one of Destructoid's Airbnb rooms and wrestling with the Wi-Fi so I could finish a preview. Our video crew was also there, scurrying about the place in search for a mislaid item. But the rest of the Dtoid team was mysteriously absent that evening. I would later learn they were all at the "PC Gaming Show" having a terrible time. The program lasted more than two hours, and much of that time was used advertising for event sponsor AMD and parading around special guests who nothing interesting to say or show off. Hopefully the organizers have learned from those mistakes, as PC Gamer has announced plans to host another event at this year's E3 in Los Angeles, on June 13, at 12 noon PDT (7pm GMT). "In 2015 it was really important to us to get a big variety of participants on stage to help convey the spectrum of exciting stuff happening on PC, but an inevitable effect of that was that we ran quite long," PC Gamer admitted alongside the announcement, while promising that "this year's show will be more focused, but packed with tons of new announcements and exclusive reveals." Let's hope so. The horror stories from last year's show still keep me up at night, probably. The PC Gaming Show is back for 2016 [PC Gamer]

The meaning of The Witness (Part 3 of 3) Posted: 13 Feb 2016 06:30 AM PST Assuming you're all caught up with Part 1 and Part 2, Part 3 of this analysis talks about games that have a bit of a 'genius narrative' surrounding them. I'm Sean Han-Tani-Chen-Hogan, and am currently developing the adventure platformer game, Even the Ocean, with a friend, Joni Kittaka. We also made the game Anodyne. Read more... |
Bungie admits drop rate for Destiny's new event item is too low Posted: 13 Feb 2016 04:30 AM PST This week in Destiny, Bungie is hosting a special event to celebrate Valentine's Day. It's called Crimson Doubles and involves pairing up with a partner for some competitive multiplayer. A potential prize waiting for players at the end of the tunnel is a fancy Ghost shell with 320 light -- the game's maximum value for weapons and armor at the moment. The thing is, much like all of Destiny's coveted gear, the chances of getting your hands on one of these Ghost shells is pretty low. In response to this, many players have entered into suicide pacts, intentionally killing their characters as quickly as possible to play in as many matches as possible. Since the odds of getting one of these shells is random and doesn't take performance into account, probability favors these players more so than anyone earnestly attempting to play the game as intended. Last night, Destructoid's own Darren Nakamura and I encountered a number of teams employing this self-destructive strategy. In at least one instance, we surmised, our opponents had jury-rigged their controllers for self-murder and walked away from their consoles for the evening. Read more... |
25 percent off Street Fighter V leads in Weekend Deals Posted: 13 Feb 2016 04:00 AM PST Street Fighter V heads to the PlayStation 4 and PC this Tuesday and there are a lot of pre-order deals for the game this weekend. We're not sure how to feel about Capcom's Season Pass right now, but at least the content road map has been disclosed for the rest of 2016. The Steam key is 25 percent off at GMG, while PS4 gamers can score a $15 eGift Card when pre-ordering via Dell (if you have a Best Buy GCU account, we'll suggest going with that instead). With another new mode introduced for GTA Online comes with the usual Rockstar sale on Grand Theft Auto V (still one of the best-selling games around). The PC version nets a 46 percent discount, and the bundle with the Shark Card has an even bigger price cut. We're also seeing the first major discount on the Megalodon Shark Cash Card at more than 40 percent off. Finally, noteworthy hardware deals this weekend include PS4 and Xbox One bundles with some nice additions thrown in. The 1TB Xbox One bundle features a year of Xbox Live Gold for $350, while the PS4 Uncharted bundle includes a one-year PS Plus subscription for the same price. Read more... |
Cor blimey! More characters revealed for Dragon Quest Heroes II Posted: 13 Feb 2016 02:00 AM PST We just got our first look at the new characters to appear in Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End a few days ago. According to a page from the latest issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, it seems Dragon Quest Heroes II will be getting a heap of new characters from previous games in the series as well. The image features Torneko and Meena (Maya's sister) from Dragon Quest IV, Carver from Dragon Quest VI, Gabo and Maribel from Dragon Quest VII, and Angelo from Dragon Quest VIII. It also looks like Alena, Kiryl, Maya, Terry, and Jessica will be returning. I'm pretty bummed Yangus is nowhere to be seen, though. He's the best! It's also a little strange that both Bianca and Nera are gone, leaving no one to represent Dragon Quest V. Here's hoping they will be available as secret bonus characters or something, kind of like the extra character from the first Dragon Quest Heroes. Read more... |
Posted: 12 Feb 2016 11:10 PM PST Beta weekend two is under way! This is an early head's up that we are possibly switching to dev.destructoid.com in the next five minutes or in March, and really could use your feedback. If you saw the site a few weeks ago you'll hopefully enjoy all of the tweaks we've made since. Here's a little bit of what's completely new like... Same old shit mode - I like Destructoid. Do you like Destructoid? Hey, we have something in common already. Let's not change it too much despite the web publishing industry completely falling apart and being forced to conform to 5-inch devices. Yes, our changes are primarily to make sure you can read us from whatever gadget you're buying next (or we'd still be rocking toilet edition like it's 2008). Otherwise, the aroma of your drunkard uncle remains amidst. Our new design sports a new font on some page elements (we made it larger, bolder), the site runs faster on mobile, maybe feels cleaner looking, and available in an improved dark and light theme with many more coming. Ideally, you'll make your own full custom themes, right? I'm trying to get us there, pulling our ten-year-old infrastructure by the eyelids and into the glorious future. Red bar or not? Bigger logo? We'll do it, but in themes. Dafoe shall rise again! Maybe OkDtoid too. Ato de. Read more... |
