Make out with people of all genders in Smooth Operator Posted: 12 Feb 2016 02:00 PM PST Beardo Games' Smooth Operator is out now on iOS just in time to practice kissing for Valentine's Day. In it, you and a friend, lover, or fuck buddy choose a character from a diverse list, then pick a location to meet and make out. Each player uses one side of the screen and swipes along with directions given by the game to make the characters touch tongues outside of their mouths in creative ways. After purchasing Smooth Operator for $2.99, I quickly found myself as a punk rock hipster chick named Ginger making out with a female luchador (also myself) in a graveyard. So hot, so lonely, and so sad. This is my life. Happy almost Valentine's Day, self!

Dung beetles, split-screen, and more added to ARK: Survival Evolved for Xbox One Posted: 12 Feb 2016 12:00 PM PST I'm convinced that ARK: Survival Evolved is secretly all about poop, especially after today's patch for the Xbox One version that adds giant dung beetles. The update also enables split-screen so you can collect turds with your friends, picking up hot, freshly laid loafs from the dinosaurs that litter the land with their succulent scats. I've only played ARK on PC one time, right after it was released. I found no joy in it other than collecting shits and putting them in strangers' houses, knowing they would eventually come home to a dump-truck load of dino dung that some deranged person had gathered with the intention of leaving it there for them to find. I'm a huge dinosaur fan, and the more I see of this game, the more I think I should give it a second chance, but man do I hate crafting and survival elements. Well, poop. Check out all the changes included in this latest Xbox One update here.

Meet BrolyLegs, the competitive Street Fighter player who fights with his mouth Posted: 12 Feb 2016 11:00 AM PST Capcom produced the above mini-documentary on BrolyLegs, a competitive Street Fighter player who plays entirely with his mouth due to a birth defect. One might think that someone in his condition may not be a viable competitor, but instead he is the number-one ranked Chun-Li online in Ultra Street Fighter IV, an achievement for anyone, let alone a person playing with their mouth. I'm surprised that he plays with what appears to be a vanilla controller when there are charities such as AbleGamers that help people get custom-built controllers. That makes it all the more impressive. [Header image by Fernando Rafael Jimenez]

Leonardo can slow time in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan Posted: 12 Feb 2016 10:00 AM PST Platinum Games' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan looks to be mixing up the formula of the old-school TMNT beat-'em-ups I grew up on, and I'm okay with this. Judging by this new gameplay footage of Leonardo, who has the power to slow time, we can assume that each turtle will have their own special ability. I'm not sure how slowing time relates to the character of Leonardo, but this looks pretty fun gameplay-wise. I, for one, am pumped. No matter how good or bad it ends up, it will never, ever be as terrible as the TMNT Christmas special, We Wish You a Turtle Christmas, or that one turtle with boobs.

Zelda meets vikings and crafting in Cornerstone: The Song of Tyrim Posted: 12 Feb 2016 09:30 AM PST Vikings, and puzzles, and crafting, oh my! Cornerstone: The Song of Tyrim will be hitting PC this April and it's about a young hero named Tyrim searching out long-lost viking men. Sounds like a Joe Parlock fantasy, at least if the vikings were also orcs. Clearly lots of influence from The Legend of Zelda series here, specifically The Wind Waker. Everyone seems to be all about those boating mechanics recently, and I'm not quite sure why. This one looks like it could go either way, really, but sand surfing has me interested at the very least.

Just kidding, these are the REAL Quantum Break PC requirements Posted: 12 Feb 2016 09:00 AM PST Show of hands: Who thought when Remedy revealed the PC requirements for Quantum Break yesterday, that those were the real requirements? Fools. All of you. How could you be so gullible? This is what you'll actually need to run Quantum Break on Windows 10: Read more... |
Let's help pick the 2016 IGF Audience Award winner Posted: 12 Feb 2016 08:30 AM PST Audience voting has begun for the 2016 Independent Games Festival Awards (vote here) and the 2016 Game Developers Choice Awards (and here). If you'd like to have a say in who claims the Audience Awards at next month's ceremonies, you just need to provide a valid email address when submitting your votes. "Email addresses will not be distributed, and we will delete your information after the poll has closed," they promise. Considering Undertale came out on top in GameFAQ's recent "Best.Game.Ever" user poll, I would expect it to win at the IGF as well, but don't let that stop you from being true to your heart. You have until next Friday, February 19 at 11:59pm Pacific to cast your ballot. The awards ceremonies will be streamed via Twitch on March 16, 2016 at 6:30pm Pacific. Read more... |
Posted: 12 Feb 2016 08:00 AM PST For nerds of a certain age, gamebooks hold as much childhood influence as the most memorable classic video games. Gamebooks helped pioneer player-driven narrative; the design lessons learned from the likes of Choose Your Own Adventure and Lone Wolf would go on to affect the evolution of video game narrative and role-playing titles as developers and audiences embraced the power of choice. Flash forward a generation, and inkle, maker of the acclaimed 80 Days, has adapted Steve Jackson's classic Fighting Fantasy gamebook series Sorcery! for video games. The question remains, though: Can a game that's the same age as me retain that old magic? Read more... |

PlayStation's new Flash Sale is for lovers Posted: 12 Feb 2016 06:54 AM PST It's time for Sony to throw another PlayStation Flash Sale, an event that challenges the very notion of the word "flash." This sale lines up with Valentine's Day, a holiday for romanticism, conversation hearts, and cheap video games (apparently). And, it doesn't end until the morning of February 15 -- some three days from now. According to the sale's main page, 122 items are discounted across PS4, PS3, PS Vita, but it's not quite that many games. There's a fair amount of overlap because of multiple listings for some titles to account for different platforms. At a cursory glance, there's decent variety in this sale. Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons ($5.99), Geometry Wars 3 ($4.94), Rayman Legends ($11.99) all caught my eye immediately. Chances are there's probably something here for you and yours in time for Valentine's Day. Flash Sale [PlayStation Store]

Earth Defense Force 4.1's second mission pack is free right now Posted: 12 Feb 2016 06:30 AM PST Lord knows I don't need a good reason to get back into Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair right now (too busy!), but I'm getting one anyway in the form of 23 extra missions. The game's second major DLC release, Mission Pack 2: Extreme Battle, is out now and it's free to claim during its first two weeks of availability on PlayStation Network. Go grab it from that link. The gesture is "a thank you to players for their patience" with recent save-system issues. After the two weeks are up, the add-on will cost $9.99, right in line with Mission Pack 1: Time of the Mutants (what glorious human being is responsible for naming these things?).

Review: Atelier Escha & Logy Plus: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky Posted: 12 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST Atelier has always been one of those niche series of RPGs that gets harder to jump into with every entry. Featuring complex and often convoluted alchemy mechanics that have grown tough to break into over the years, the games have served their fanbase well, but struggled to bring in new players. Atelier Escha & Logy Plus strips away a good number of layers from the systems that the series is built upon. Yes, it's less complex for long-time fans, but it's also the most accessible entry point for new fans looking to jump in. Read more... |
See Tekken 7's Akuma in action from Japan's location test Posted: 12 Feb 2016 05:30 AM PST Japan is running its location tests for Tekken 7: Fated Retribution right now, and of course, tons of people are recording their experiences. It looks like Akuma and his standard moveset are in, and you can get a look at both him and the newly announced Nina Williams in the videos below. Akuma fits rather well, especially since you can just sidestep his fireball spam. I don't know if one crossover is enough to get me psyched up about this new Tekken, but I'd sure like to try it some day. Read more... |
Zelda looks right at home with an isometric art style Posted: 12 Feb 2016 05:00 AM PST Artist Sir Carma has done a great job capturing that classic Zelda feel with this new series of 3D artwork. Based on the unassuming abode of Link at the start of Link to the Past, it has a 3D Dot Heroes feel to it while still staying true to the original games. Looking at the gallery below has me chomping at the bit for a Zelda-fied version of Super Mario Maker. Changing between styles between the original 8-bit, the SNES era, the Game Boy Awakening engine, and the modern Link Between Worlds or Tri Force Heroes would be amazing. Umbrella Corps unveils its Resident Evil 5 themed map Posted: 12 Feb 2016 04:30 AM PST Although it was revealed in Umbrella Corps' last trailer, Capcom is now officially sharing details regarding its Resident Evil 5-style Kijuju map. It's the biggest map in the game, and will also sport underground passages in addition to its open style. The Majini will return as enemies in the arena. Capcom reminds us that Umbrella is still set for a May release, and is still only available on PC and PS4. I doubt this will sell well enough for an Xbox One release, but at the very least, this looks better than the awful Operation Raccoon City. Destiny developer is working on a neat new PC/PS4 side project Posted: 12 Feb 2016 04:00 AM PST Bungie's Ryan Juckett's day job as a gameplay programmer on Destiny hasn't stopped him from working on his own independent game. Inversus is a minimalist 1-4 player shooter coming to PC and PlayStation 4 in spring of this year. Players are constricted in movement by tile color and shooting will flip the color of all the tiles ahead of you, as well as your opponents. Seems like it could lead to some clever strategies, and I like the idea of a game where your offense has potential to mess you over or leave you vulnerable, like Shotguns in the Dark.

If Firewatch's Henry joined the Smash Bros. roster Posted: 12 Feb 2016 03:30 AM PST
Hey, those meaty paws could do some serious damage. Maybe a Little Mac-style brawler (also not fleet of foot). Or, hey, just bring back the Ice Climbers move set but texture them like Yellowstone National Park. Anyways, I didn't know the PS4 version of Firewatch was this messed up.

Review in Progress: Project X Zone 2 Posted: 12 Feb 2016 03:00 AM PST I just popped an Advil because I'm dealing with some annoying pain right now. It's a pain that starts to sting right in the inside of my elbow as I try to stretch my arm out. I'm not unfamiliar with this pain, in fact we're old friends. We go back to 2001 when I powered through Golden Sun in a single car ride, back to 2005 when I explored the miniature world of The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and back to 2010 when I just had to unlock the next character class in Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Sky. This is the pain that comes when you are so engrossed with a handheld video game you just can't put the system down, keeping your arm in place until the muscles tighten up as some sort of punishment for sitting on your ass all day playing a game instead of doing something good for your body. This is a pain I enjoy, because if I have it that means I've been spending my time playing something truly special. For the past few nights I've been enduring the pain because I just can't put down Project X Zone 2. Read more... |
Overwatch's new beta build is good news for the game's future Posted: 12 Feb 2016 02:30 AM PST Overwatch is shaping up. I really enjoyed my time with it back in October, but as of this newest closed beta build, it's clear that the team knows what they're doing. This week, they added in one simple upgrade that made a lot of people happy -- player progression. Now just by playing you'll earn new rewards, separate from any sort of character-centric requirements. It's a great change. Read more... |
Ubisoft: Xbox One owners spend more than PS4 owners Posted: 12 Feb 2016 02:00 AM PST While just about every publisher who is making a shooter is flocking to the PS4 (the new home of shooters, according to Sony), Ubisoft is staying the course with The Division, which had an extra day of lead time with the beta on Xbox One, and some light exclusives. Why? Well Ubisoft's recent financial report might explain that decision a bit. According to the publisher, Xbox One owners spend $1.25 for every $1 that PS4 owners do, leading to a better average revenue per player count. Overall, Ubisoft netted 41% of its third quarter sales from PS4 products, 27% from Xbox One, 12% from PC, 6% from Wii, and 4% from the Xbox 360. The Wii U, sadly, was counted as an "other" with PS3 and mobile, which netted 10% -- but it's not like it supports the platform anyway. Interesting stuff! I agree with VentureBeat's assessment that the Xbox One will likely not catch up with the PS4 in terms of hardware units sold, but if there's one company that knows how to monetize its customers, it's Microsoft. The fact that it can do this ensures that it is still in the fight this console generation. Ubisoft Investor Center [Ubisoft via VentureBeat]

Fallout 4 DLC news coming soon, Survival mode is getting overhauled Posted: 12 Feb 2016 01:00 AM PST After Bethesda decided to charge for the Fallout 4 Season Pass mystery box, fans have become understandably antsy -- especially since a lot of story-based bits in the core game were lacking (people are finally coming around to my original review thoughts after actually playing it!). But we'll have to wait a little longer based on a statement from the official Facebook page, as news for the DLC is "not far off." In other actual news, the team is planning a "complete overhaul" of the game's Survival mode. "Food, sleep, diseases, danger, and more" updates are planned, which should hopefully bring it more inline with an actual survival feel. So yeah, Bethesda is still working on making Fallout 4 better. Now we wait. Fallout [Facebook]

Super Mario Maker is getting the original Pokemon trio Posted: 12 Feb 2016 12:00 AM PST I have to say, Nintendo is doing a bang-up job of celebrating Pokémon's 20th anniversary. Hell, there's already been a ton of fanfare (the Mew event, tons of merchandise worldwide, amiibo restocks, a Splatoon Splatfest, a new 'mon reveal, a free stream of the first film, new Nendoroids, Pokken Tournament on Wii U later this year, Detective Pikachu, Pokemon Go, and a special retail celebration next weekend) and it's just February! If only Nintendo did the same for say, Metroid. Oh, and by the way, it's Metroid's 30th anniversary this year -- happy 30th! Anyway, Super Mario Maker keeps the good times rolling with Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle costumes. Simply complete the event course, and you're good. I love the three themes between the levels and the retro sound effects! Read more... |
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: All-Star Carnival gets a teaser site Posted: 11 Feb 2016 11:30 PM PST The arcade version of Theatrhythm has a name -- Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: All-Star Carnival -- and also a new teaser site. It's set to debut in Japan this year, but will also be available at the Japan Amusement Expo at the Makuhari Messe (same place as TGS!) on February 20. The plan is to constantly add to the game's tracklist, and allow for online play. The expanded party size is really what interests me here. Like you're a gigantic army of every Final Fantasy character ever taking on a horde of enemies. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: All-Star Carnival [Square Enix] Read more... |
Fallout 4 is looking better on consoles Posted: 11 Feb 2016 10:00 PM PST While Fallout 4 on consoles is certainly not a terrible-looking game, it's undeniable that it is lagging a little behind the visual quality of the PC release. Frame rate and resolution problems still have some catching up to do, but this new patch brings the console draw distances more inline with the PC version running on high. Read more... |
Xbox will make cross buy/cross save 'a platform feature' Posted: 11 Feb 2016 09:00 PM PST Quantum Break’s cross-buy and cross-save functionality will become a Xbox feature, says Xbox boss Phil Spencer.
Replying to fans on Twitter, Spencer said that there were plans to make it a platform feature, as it would be “good for gamers.” The reply acknowledges Xbox is looking beyond just first party games, too. The cross-buy / cross-save feature has been available on Sony platforms for some time, but up until now, Microsoft seemed to have focused on bringing backwards compatibility to the Xbox One. What Xbox One game would you like to see offer cross-buy/save functionality? HAPPY FRIDAY! <3

You need a spare $10M to buy the Dying Light Spotlight Edition Posted: 11 Feb 2016 08:00 PM PST So what does that $10 million get you? You’ll get a speaking role in Dying Light: The Movie, with professional acting lessons provided by Roger Craig Smith (Ezio in Assassin’s Creed, in case you were wondering). There’s also stuntman parkour training, off-road driving course, an on-set personal training (you need to be in shape for the stunt training, I guess), a signed original copy of the film script (for you to learn your lines, obvs), special FX make-up lessons, a screening tour of the film to all festivals (with first-class accommodation), and ten VIP tickets for the premiere. You’ll also secure the role of Kyle Crane in a personalised edition of Dying Light (presumably there's no expectation that a female would buy this) and four - yeah, a measly four - copies of Dying Light: The Following - Enhanced Edition. They'll be signed by the dev team and come in the platform of your choice, though. Woot. Personally, I’d want a little bit more for my money - like a house in Malibu and a personal McDreamy to call my own - but maybe I’m just old-fashioned that way, eh? So if you have $10 million and have been itching to become a parkour stuntman, head on over to GAME. (Or just give it to me. Whatevs). Alternatively, pick up the standard edition. Read more... |
Ice Man arses about in this Quantum Break trailer Posted: 11 Feb 2016 07:00 PM PST Yesterday we heard that former Xbox One exclusive Quantum Break will be getting a simultaneous launch on PC and Xbox One on April 5. What better way to celebrate that than with a live-action trailer that shows sweet FA? Watch as Ice Man from the X-Men movies looks intense and angsty in a graveyard, until big police guys with lots of guns appear! Oh no, what will Ice Man do?! But then, a very pretty ripple effect happens… and time is stopped! How convenient. So then Ice Man decides that instead of running away like any normal person, he grabs a gun and points it at where he was just stood. Y’know, just to help the police shoot where he isn’t anymore. As far as trailers go it’s flashy and completely unsubstantial. It does remind me of that really cool trailer for TimeShift, though, so at least it has that going for it. Quantum Break launches for PC and Xbox One on April 5.

Watch Dogs 2 to be released by April 2017 Posted: 11 Feb 2016 06:00 PM PST For a game that built up as much pre-launch hype as Watch Dogs, it’s super weird that Ubisoft hasn’t made a bigger deal of the inevitable sequel. We know it’s coming though, and we now know it’ll be coming sometime before April 2017. In its end-of-quarter financial report, Ubisoft confirmed that it is working on a sequel to Watch Dogs and that it will be due out in the next fiscal year. Seeing as that ends in April 2017, we have at most 14 months to wait for Aiden ‘bought all my clothes from GAME’ Pierce’s oh-so-triumphant return. I really hope Watch Dogs 2 pulls an Assassin’s Creed II and massively improves on the original in almost every way, because as much as I loved Watch Dogs it did have some pretty glaring problems. In particular, I’d like some more involved hacking mechanics and less pissing about in security cameras, please. Watch Dogs 2 joins South Park: The Fractured But Whole (whose name I only just got while typing it), Ghost Recon: Wildlands, For Honor, and a new as-of-yet unknown IP as Ubisoft’s lineup for over the next year. While we’re not seeing an Assassin’s Creed game anytime soon, which makes me sad in an ‘it’s for the best’ kind of way, there are still things to be positive about. I really enjoyed Watch Dogs, and For Honor is right up my Chivalry-playing alley, so I’m interested to see how Ubisoft pull off the next 14 months.

Good lord, not another Dead Island Posted: 11 Feb 2016 04:20 PM PST It's impressive how much Deep Silver has milked the Dead Island name over the past five years. You know, considering a trailer, of all things, is the zombie franchise's claim to fame. So it comes as no surprise that the publisher is looking to drive the series into the ground (more than it already has) with yet another spin-off. According to Australia and Brazil's ratings boards, Dead Island: Retro Revenge is in the works at San Diego-based studio Empty Clip Games. There isn't much information on the game at this time, though it's already received an M-rating from the notorious Australian games council and is in development for Xbox One, PC, and PS4. While Empty Clip doesn't have much of a track record to speak of (it's mostly been a port factory to date), Deep Silver hasn't had much luck with the franchise. After following up the original with a pair of lousy sequels, Escape Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide, the publisher more recently hit Dead Island 2 with an indefinite delay and removed Spec Ops: The Line team Yager from the project. The publisher also recently shut down its MOBA Dead Island: Epidemic, which nobody ever seemed to play, despite the fact it was both free and constantly spammed Steam users with beta invitations. While it would be a pleasant surprise if one of these games ended up being worth it, one has to wonder how long Deep Silver can continue churning out shoddy products and still turn a profit.
