Heroes of the Storm enlists Li-Ming tomorrow

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 03:00 PM PST

It seems Chris and I have begun taking turns covering Heroes of the Storm. He last shared impressions of Li-Ming, and now I'm back to tell you she's launching earlier than expected. After a short stint on the public test realm, the "rebellious wizard" will join the Nexus tomorrow, February 2.

That should also mean we'll see a number of significant changes to existing characters now that playtesting for last week's PTR patch has wrapped. I know Rehgar players are ready for this one.

Whip up a sweet wallpaper with Mario Maker

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 02:00 PM PST

Nintendo has a cool little web app that lets you create wallpapers for your phone or computer, Mario Maker style. It's only in Japanese, for now, but I'm confident you'll be able to find your way around.

This tool isn't nearly as extensive as what we're used to seeing in the full game, but it does have four Mario styles, multiple themed backgrounds, and a decent sampling of items and enemies. Bowser still creeps me right the heck out with his new-for-2015 Super Mario World sprite.

Free from the shackles of Wii U's anti-dong technology, someone on staff (can you guess who?) broke the tool in last night with this bad boy. Probably don't click that link, kids.

[Thanks, JBroXNari99]

Comments of the Week: You're creeping me out

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 01:00 PM PST

Welcome back to Comments of the Week! Your host, the lovely and enigmatic Dreamweaver, is back for yet another round of delicious comments, cut straight from the articles themselves! I'm sorry, I did try to get them as fresh as possible, but you'd be surprised how silent people get when you ask if you can stick a knife in their throats. Anyway, whether you've been out and about, or simply want to go back in time and change the course of history by staring into these comment clips, then this is for you! As always, comments are categorized into three divisions:

TRUTH: The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 to 15 pounds.

LOL: Just like my penis, ladies.

WUT?: How on Earth am I still single? :P

In case you're just waking up from your hibernation because of all the snow lately, you'll want to head back into the past and check out last week's Comments of the Week. There's nothing better than watching your fellow Dtoiders go crazy from the cold!

Black Desert Online launches March 3

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 12:30 PM PST

Black Desert Online, the Korean MMO famed for its extravagant character creator, is launching in North America, Oceania, and some European regions on March 3, Daum Games announced today.

Until then, prospective players can download the title's free standalone character creator, which allows users to import their handiwork into the main game and upcoming second beta test.

Speaking of which, that beta begins on February 18 and runs until February 22. For a chance to participate in the pre-release test you can register here or pre-order one of the premium packages, which run from $50 to $100 -- as opposed to the $30 base game, for guaranteed access.

In case you're wondering why Black Desert Online is only launching in some European territories on March 3, other countries including Ukraine, the Baltic States, Belarus, Georgia and Armenia, amongst others, are locked into the Russian servers, which along with the Korean and Japanese versions of the game are based around free-to-play schemes and have different publishers.

Resident Evil 4 hits Wii U in North America this week

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 11:30 AM PST

How many ports does Resident Evil 4 warrant? All of them. Forever.

Those of us in North America will have another chance to nab the best-playing version, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, when it comes to the Wii U eShop this Thursday, February 4. I'm not sure what took so long, as European players have had it since last October. Weird.

Bloggers Wanted: Waifu Wars

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 11:00 AM PST

A few months back, a war broke out in the Dtoid quickpost section. It was, quite simply, a war of the waifus. User after user was either proclaiming their love for a particular game lady or telling each other why their "best girl" or guy was better than the others. And then I told them Chie was wet dumpster trash and that Mitsuru and Margaret were the best Persona ladies (sorry, Steven).

Actually, I think I just laid claim to all potential waifus, but this fairy likes her Persona gals posh and classy. And gay, but alas, Atlus has no option for that yet in the series. Who'd have thought Nintendo would have beaten it to the punch on both gender and romance options?

Let's remember Castlevania with this awesome dad-ass vampire guitarist

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 10:30 AM PST

When I cruise around the internet looking for juicy junk to shove down all of your throats, I listen to a large variety of music to keep myself focused. I've been on a Super Castlevania IV kick lately, so I went to the ol' youtube dot com and typed in "Dance of the Holy Man," one of the game's best songs. I didn't expect to find my new favorite video.

MagnusVonBlack, looking for all the world like a dad who owns at least two Halloween haunts, wears plastic fangs and aviators as he shreds on his glittery guitar. Strobe lights, plastic skulls, and headstones surround him as he submits himself to the music of the night. By the time he starts dancing around with a little toy skeleton and caressing a skull, I couldn't hold it in any longer. His video description is equally amazing:

I, Magnus Von Black, wielder of both pen and sword (and by sword, I mean glitter-bombed Stratocaster!), have been turned into a Vampire! That is to say, I turned myself into a Vampire using only the force of my own inexorable creative willpower.

That's right, to celebrate Halloween, and to celebrate my favorite month (that being October, of course. My affinity for this wistful, beautiful season of the macabre is shared by my own kindred spirit, the lovely and erudite Ms. Anne Shirley of Prince Edward Island), I wrote a really long, multi-tiered sentence in which I misplaced the direct object and forgot the subject, leading us to where we are now... here, in this very sentence where I am rambling quite incoherently!

The bottom line, dear viewer, is that I have poured my soul into this most legendary of songs, for the remembered glory of Simon Belmont's past adventures, and for my own greedy, self-aggrandizing guitar Olympics.

I feel like I should be cringing, but dude's having an absolute blast, and that's respectable. I want to grow up to be just like him. The guitar skills would be nice, too, since I plateaued with the six-string when I was 18. If anything, just watch the last thirty seconds and try not to smile. If there's ever a new Castlevania, move over Michiru Yamane.

Storybook time! Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir's first English trailer

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 10:00 AM PST

Now that Odin Sphere's Leifthrasir remake is out in Japan, Vanillaware can focus on the areas that really matter: the Americas. We're getting the 2D action-RPG on PS3, PS4, and PS Vita in the Americas on June 7, 2016 and so here's an English trailer, eh?

Granted English is only the official language of the northern Americas but, you know. In the mean time, remember there's an Odin Sphere browser game you can mess about in.

Someone made a Fallout-themed character sheet for D&D

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 09:30 AM PST

I'm not quite convinced that Dungeons & Dragons can easily be converted to fit Fallout's classless (game-wise, not social stature-wise) RPG style, but that didn't stop a person on the internet from dreaming up this 'lil baby:

While this amounts only to a skin for your character sheet and won't fundamentally change the game to include Rad-X and Super Mutants, it's really well done! I really like the layout, especially having your spell slots readily available on the first page and having your skills grouped by their determining stat. If you made this, or know who did, let me know so I can give credit where it's due.

We can pick another PlayStation Plus game

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 08:30 AM PST

Last year, Sony let users vote on which game they'd like to see show up as a PlayStation Plus freebie. Most of us went with Grow Home above Armello or Zombie Vikings, and so it was. That promo, Vote to Play, is going to return for the subscription's March game lineup.

The race is between the time-trial platformer Action Henk, the twin-stick shooter Assault Android Cactus, and the muscular Broforce. Now, we can't actually cast our ballot yet -- the polls open on Tuesday, February 9 for active PS Plus members -- but that gives us extra time to talk it out.

Selfishly, I'm hoping Assault Android Cactus takes the vote. It's the one I have the least experience with and I could go for a solid shooter to give my brain a break after extended sessions of The Witness and The Talos Principle: Road to Gehenna. Chris even gave it a nine!

Crashlands is much longer than it needs to be

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 08:00 AM PST

It's easy to settle into playing Crashlands. To start, it takes on the fairly well-trodden survival genre, where players start with nothing, punch some trees, harvest resources, and eventually build fantastic items. It most closely resembles Klei's Don't Starve, but with a much more colorful palette, a structured narrative, and no permadeath.

The major problem comes as a result of those latter two tweaks. In telling this story and allowing for respawning with only a minor penalty, a game that's good in short bursts is transformed into a 30+ hour experience. In that context, it doesn't hold up.

Madden's backing the Panthers to buck the Broncos

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 07:30 AM PST

The folks at EA Sports like to use Madden, perennially the most realistic football video game, to predict the outcome of the Super Bowl. It's an obvious, easy trick to use the hype for The Big Game to redirect some attention to the Madden brand. It also works perplexingly well, not unlike that World Cup-pickin' octopus named "Paul."

In this year's matchup between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers, Madden 16 has Carolina winning by four courtesy of a last-minute touchdown. According to the simulation, the Panthers get out to a 17-point lead at half-time, find themselves down by three in the fourth quarter, and clinch the victory on a Cam Newton run.

Still, something seems amiss. Down three, why would Carolina go for it on fourth down from the five-yard line? The Panthers coach "Riverboat" Ron Rivera has a reputation for being aggressive, but gambling on picking up five yards against the league's best defense instead of the chip shot field goal to tie, well, that isn't very realistic.

All of that aside, Madden has a good track record as of late when it comes to predicting the Super Bowl. It has gotten nine of the past twelve winners right. Last year, it forecast the exact final score which is probably equal parts impressive and coincidental. It all looks good on paper, but as the adage goes, that's why they play the games.

Holy shit, this fan-made Witness puzzle is totally solvable

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 07:00 AM PST

Once The Witness has its hooks in you, it really has its hooks in you. Chances are, there's no turning back. There is only playing, dreaming, and day-dreaming. Everything is a Witness puzzle waiting to happen, as I realized when I drove past Domino's.

Me? I'm having conversations about it with no fewer than seven different people every day. Around here, Chris, Jordan, Ben, Patrick, and Zack have all fallen under the game's spell. It's fascinating to hear them recount their progress and revelations.

We aren't the only ones unknowingly losing hours in chunks. As we recounted last week, The Witness has a pretty active community. One of those engrossed in the game is Read Only Memories lead programmer Ted DiNola. He came up with his own Witness puzzle, and it's a doozy:

Oh, a weird-lookin' Knuckles Mii is coming to Smash too

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 06:30 AM PST

This Wednesday's arrival of Bayonetta and Corrin as the final Super Smash Bros. DLC isn't quite the entirety of the last Smash DLC. Easily overlooked is the sixth wave of Mii Fighters, Nintendo's avatars dressed in silly costumes. It's obvious why they take a backseat to beloved characters from established properties.

But, one of those Mii costumes is a Knuckles suit, and that might cause a stir -- especially given how weird it is to see a human face peeking out from those head spines (or whatever they are). Tails is represented too, but with a hat for a head instead of a full-body suit. Can't win 'em all.

The other Mii Fighters releasing on Wednesday are Gil from Tower of Druaga, a bionic armor suit, Ashley from WarioWare, and Takamaru from Nazo no Murasame-jō. In terms of being true to their original look, Ashley's probably your best bet. But, Knuckles is your dude if you value unsettling and slightly off-putting. To each their own.

Tommy Refenes REACTS to kids REACTING to Super Meat Boy

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST

Tommy Refenes, half the development team of Super Meat Boy, made a reaction video over the weekend. That's a rebellious thing to do because popular YouTubers The Fine Brothers are currently in the process of trying to trademark the word "react." Soon enough, reacting to things on the Internet will be for the lawbreakers and the do-no-gooders.

Maybe that's a bit exaggerated, but it's definitely an Internet Hot Topic right now -- enough so that mocking the Fine Bros. is widely accepted. Tommy does just that by reacting to kids reacting to playing Super Meat Boy, again, a game that he made. The mocking is restrained though, as Tommy just kind of becomes enchanted by children trying to figure out his game.

Watching this video, I had a few reactions. Tommy has a sweet Capybara Games t-shirt. It's cute! Also, we have the same keyboard for our TVs, a functional little thing with a touchpad built in. It's great for loading streams from afar and for not misplacing a mouse, but I don't like it much beyond that. Tommy can feel free to take to the comments if he wants to react to me reacting to our keyboards.

The original Spyro in Unreal Engine 4 is making me nostalgic

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 05:30 AM PST

Have you seen [x] game in Unreal Engine 4? Crazy!

But for real, someone is recreating the original Spyro game in Unreal, and it really makes me pine for the original again. There's probably a fat chance we'll actually see a true return anytime soon, with Spyro's Skylanders franchise (which he was ousted from by the way after the first title) still doing very well.

I think I'm going to bust out my original PlayStation this time in fact, as that era of mascot platformers is pretty damn fantastic. Yes, I'm including Croc: Legend of the Gobbos and Jersey Devil in that equation -- come at me.

These Persona and Seinfeld mashups never get old

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 05:00 AM PST

"Perseinfeld" is a joke that's been running for quite some time, but it hasn't really gotten old yet. Folks all over the world have mashed up Persona 4 and Seinfeld to great success, mostly due to the absurd nature of the show and its limitless plotlines.

The music is really what makes it, and with the constant shifting of relationships, there's a ton of possibilities. This Kramer and Velvet Room mashup, complete with a fetch quest, is one of my favorites.

Odin Sphere is now officially a browser game

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 04:30 AM PST

Vanillaware said it was working on it, and last weekend, the studio released the Odin Sphere 8-bit browser game. You play as Gwendolyn, who has a standard attack, aerial dive attack, and a glide at her disposal.

I have to say, it's actually not bad at all for a side project. The controls are pretty responsive and I dig the art style -- especially that chiptune main theme! The Leifthrasir remake was released in Japan last month, and is coming in June in the west.

Like solving puzzles with little to no help? INFRA might be for you

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 04:00 AM PST

Some games just hand out answers to puzzles -- if you can even call them that -- with numbers or solutions written nearby. While the first-person adventure INFRA does this a bit, it certainly isn't holding your hand most of the time.

In INFRA you're playing as someone who inspects infrastructure for a living. Basically someone who looks at bridges, buildings, roads, and so forth to make sure they are safe for use. If you were to go into the game blind without watching the trailer, you'd probably think, "What an odd concept for a game. I literally just walk around and take pictures of cracks in bridges and dams?" before finding out something more insidious is going on.

Over at the Game Party event in Japan, one major booth stood out -- a giant NES (Famicom) controller. And not just any controller, as this one actually worked, allowing people to hop up and play Super Mario Bros. with it. As you can clearly see it takes two people to fully operate it, which is a game in and of itself. Get a good look at it in the gallery and video below, compliments of Gigazine.

Leaked schedule confirms existence of open beta for The Division, Homefront beta

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 03:15 AM PST

Ubisoft extended the Division closed beta for a day, but there may be hope yet if you wanted to get in. According to this post from the Xbox Italy Facebook account, Microsoft will host an event that's open to everyone from February 16-21.

The post has since been removed from said account, so it's looking like it has merit. The leak also teases EA Access "Play It First" programs for Unravel and Garden Warfare 2, as well as an "Xbox exclusive" beta for Homefront: The Revolution. According to the Division listing, the open session will have 24 hours of Xbox exclusivity.

Japanese mall hosts amazing Dark Souls exhibit

Over in Japan, where amazing things happen on a constant basis, From Software is hosting a special exhibit for Dark Souls III. It's over at 109 Men's mall in Shibuya, and you can witness it for yourself courtesy of these screens from Gamer.

In addition to a few suits of armor, the event is actually pretty comprehensive, with artwork on display, merch to buy, and even some themed drinks. I'd be hella tempted to take a picture with that bonfire.

Ant Simulator dev quits, claims partners spent money on 'bars, strippers'

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 02:45 AM PST

For the past few years, fans of VR have been keeping an eye on Ant Simulator -- a promising indie game that placed players into the viewpoint of a tiny ant, attempting to manage a colony. There was even a Kickstarter held back in 2014 to held fund the creator's (Eric Terenshiki) company -- ETeeski LLC.

But as of last weekend, Terenshiki is leaving the company, and is canceling the project as the lead designer. He alleges that his partners "secretly spent the overwhelming majority" of their funds on "restaurants, bars, and strippers." He claims that they have all covered their tracks to the point where it won't be worth it to sue, with a rock solid contract, and proof of the meetings that occurred, which Terenshiki claims are "bullshit."

He noted that he signed an LLC agreement with them, having been friends for "11 years" -- a move he regards as a mistake, and has since resigned and canceled Ant Simulator, calling it his "only option." Whatever the case may be, it seems as if the project is dead and Terenshiki is going to "start over." We've reached out to him for more info, but for now, you can hear his manifesto below.

This Mega Man 2 concert kicks ass

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 02:30 AM PST

Over in Chiba, Japan last weekend at the Makuhari Messe (hey that's where TGS is!), a Mega Man concert was held -- specifically, of the Mega Man 2 variety. If you're into game music at all it's worth checking out, especially given that this iteration hosts some of the series' best tracks.

It's especially cool to see some of the songs with footage from the games playing in the background. Also, some dude is wearing a Famicom helmet, and the violin guy is pretty damn good.

Review: Shadow Puppeteer

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 02:00 AM PST

Shadow Puppeteer; a game that takes the shadow-manipulation mechanics of Contrast and the dual character control of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and wraps them in a Tim Burton aesthetic… and doesn't do any one of those things well enough to produce a cohesive end product. The game aims high, but ends up a bland mix of gimmicks that never becomes a compelling whole.

I like the raw ingredients, but I could not stomach the end result.

Bethesda announces its upcoming E3 presser plans

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 01:40 AM PST

After EA fired the opening salvo, Bethesda has announced its E3 presser plans. It looks like it's going to take the stage on June 12, 2016, at 7PM in LA. The teaser image shows various characters from its signature franchises, including Skyrim, Doom, and even Dishonored.

Safe bets probably include more Doom footage, Fallout DLC plans (at least a tease of whatever pack hasn't been released by then, if any), and more Dishonored 2 info -- none of which have release dates.

Splatoon producer hints at more potential DLC

Posted: 01 Feb 2016 01:30 AM PST

Although Splatoon's regular content updates came to an end last month, I'm sure Nintendo will be popping in occasionally to spice things up. At a recent tournament for the game producer Hisoshi Nogami confirmed just that, noting there might be another surprise in store for fans.

According to a translation, Nogami said something to the effect of, "We announced that updates to the game would end in January but I'm starting to wonder if we can't organize a little something else." Given the game's success, I can definitely see that happening. Plus, there's always the rumor of the new amiibo.
