| Sega teases plans for Sonic's 25th anniversary with Big the Cat Posted: 08 Jan 2016 12:30 PM PST An image of the guys from Game Grumps holding a Big the Cat doll appeared on the official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter and Facebook pages today, along with the message, “We've got some pretty exciting stuff planned for the year, so stay tuned.” You might also notice the numbers “4 3 1 21 16” placed inconspicuously at the bottom of the image. What could they mean? Is this some kind of secret code like the one from Lost? I'm guessing it means it's probably a joke (April 1, 2016), but what about the 3 and the 21? But most importantly, there's Big the Cat, which is perhaps a super exciting implication that we're finally getting a Big the Cat game for Sonic's 25th anniversary. Who's ready for more Big? ...Anybody? |
| Next week's Splatfest is all about time travel Posted: 08 Jan 2016 11:45 AM PST Splatoon wants to know: do you prefer The Flintstones or The Jetsons? Well, not really. They want to know what you would do if you could travel through time. Would you go backward or forward? I'd probably go back and tell little Zack to exercise daily, and then go back every week and punch him until he had abs. What about you? Would you travel back to fix some error you made? Or would you go forward to play with the Oculus Rift when it's actually affordable? Starting tomorrow, you can voice your opinion. This next American Splatfest begins January 15. |
| Capcom is listening to requests for a Dragon's Dogma sequel Posted: 08 Jan 2016 10:30 AM PST We're a week out from the PC release of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. Capcom also has the free-to-play Dragon's Dogma Online (in Japan, anyway) for PC, PS3, and PS4. What are the odds we'll get a full-fledged sequel? Better than I would've thought even a year ago. Nothing's confirmed yet, but Capcom is listening. Producer Minae Matsukawa told PC Gamer that "development team members often talk about the possibility of a sequel. We'd love to hear the opinions and feedback from players of the upcoming PC port of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, as that will increase the chances that we can look into the possibility of continuing the series." My intuition tells me the port is going to do quite well for the company. It should be at home on PC. As to why Dark Arisen is only now releasing on the platform (it debuted on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012!), PC producer Jon Airhart said this was "something we had been planning for some time." From the sound of it, fan requests had an impact on the team getting approval. Dragon's Dogma devs on bringing the 2012 RPG to PC [PC Gamer] |
| Guitar Hero Live players love them some Tenacious D Posted: 08 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST FreeStyle Games has come out with a list of the most-played songs in Guitar Hero Live over the holidays and I can't be the only one who finds lists like this somewhat entertaining. Between December 24 and January 3, the most popular on-demand tracks in the UK were:
Globally, the top songs across all of Guitar Hero TV were:
A few random thoughts: first, I like how ZZ Top has more than one song about getting paid (there is also 1972's "Just Got Paid"). Second, it warms my heart to know people are still discovering and loving "Cult of Personality." What a great track! Lastly, I'm fairly sure Kyle does not own Guitar Hero Live, but I'm holding him personally accountable for "Stacy's Mom" making the cut. |
| English release of Final Fantasy Adventure remake likely Posted: 08 Jan 2016 08:30 AM PST Square has put up an English version website for Adventures of Mana, which is a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure. Square released that game as a Final Fantasy title in 1991 though it would ultimately lead to the Mana series. Final Fantasy Adventure was overhauled in 2003 as Sword of Mana for the Game Boy Advance. The Adventures of Mana remake is full 3D, previously announced for Japan for iOS, Android, and Vita. On the English version of the Adventures of Mana site, however, the PlayStation logo has been scrubbed, implying that it's currently only coming to iOS and Android in English. |
| Strider's appropriately exciting picks for Game of the Year 2015 Posted: 08 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST It's that time of year again! Every year, I love composing my Game of the Year list. I put an extra special amount of effort into it because I always have, every year. I first started doing these in 2012, than I kept going in 2013, then 2014, and finally 2015 is upon us. I saved this special batch for after the New Year passed, and now the time has come for... |
| Friday Night Fights: So much c- Posted: 08 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST Man... I want wings now. Maybe some pollo asada. I wonder if Hansen has a recipe for a good marinade for that... My fat gut aside, how the fuck y'all been? How was your holidays? What games you get? Did Mom pick the right color dildo for you? Did Grandma Edna get you the same socks again? That fucking cunt. Punch her in the neck next year, and ask her why she isn't dead yet. That'll make for a great holiday. Just do it after Mom gives you the dildo. Can't miss out on that. So how about them games, eh? Personally I got sucked back into Destiny through the The Taken King. I enjoy Destiny for what is, and I really love the feel of the game. Sure it has problems and Bungie is intent on destroying it's fanbase... but... yeah. I likes its. Rolled with a Titan this time (was a Hunter before) and I'm really digging it. Especially that melee that gives you a shield. That's fucking sweet. Shit, what time is it... YEP! Gonna go play before work! Byesies! |
| The Risk of Rain team's new game is Deadbolt Posted: 08 Jan 2016 06:30 AM PST Two years ago, I professed my love for Risk of Rain on this site. It ended up becoming one of my favorite roguelikes, right up there with my all-time bestie, Spelunky, and just thinking about it now makes me want to go back for "a few more runs." But doing so would mean the immediate and total end of my productivity, so instead let's take a look at Hopoo Games' new project, Deadbolt. While you might have seen bits and pieces of this stealth-action title before, today marks the first trailer. It's an "extremely challenging" game in which you play as the reaper. He's able to drift through vents and wield a bunch of different melee and ranged weapons (not just a scythe!), but there's one slight issue: "he dies in one shot... leaving you with no room for error." |
| Metal Gear Solid V and The Witcher 3 lead all nominees at GDC Awards Posted: 08 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST When the Game Developers Choice Awards take place March 16 in San Francisco, two games will already have a leg-up in their odds of bringing home some hardware. The award show has revealed all the nominees for its nine categories, and Metal Gear Solid V and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt lead the way with four nods each. Kojima Productions' Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was nominated for Best Audio, Best Design, Best Technology, and Game of the Year. CD Projekt Red's Witcher 3 earned nominations for Best Visual Art, Best Narrative, Best Technology, and Game of the Year. Maybe the most notable snub is that Undertale wasn't nominated for Game of the Year, as it received an incredible amount of praise since its September release. Instead, it was an honorable mention, meaning that it stands no chance of winning the GDC Awards' most coveted prize. Here are the GDC Awards' categories, nominees, and honorable mentions, in full: |
| Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak has a cool land-based aircraft carrier Posted: 08 Jan 2016 05:30 AM PST Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is set to come out in less than two weeks on January 20. Maybe you want to watch a trailer for the story before you kharak open your wallet. Maybe I only signed up to write this story because I wanted to make a stupid pun. Deserts of Kharak is a prequel to Homeworld, set in a dusty desert of a dying planet. An anomaly shows up deep in the dunes, and it might be the only hope for survival. Cue lumbering land vehicles and war. The voice we hear in the trailer might be that of Chief Science Officer Rachel S'jet. After seeing her name, I'm hoping for Transformers crossover fiction where it's actually a typo of "Rachel's a jet," and she turns into an airplane. Hey, more puns. Two for the price of pun. |
| Dragon's Dogma PC pre-order deals roundup Posted: 08 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST Next Friday, Dragon's Dogma is making its way on to the PC. Those with higher-end PCs will be able to enjoy 4K resolution plus 60 frames per second, abating PC gamers of the iffy performance of the game back in its Xbox 360 and PS3 days. Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen is retailing for $29.99 on Steam Store, GamersGate, etc. - but now through January 12 there's several competing retailers out there with discounts up to 25% off cutting as much as $7.50 out of the price tag. | Posted: 08 Jan 2016 04:30 AM PST I love chiptune music and I love music and rhythm games, so of course I had to play Chiptune Champion, which combines them both. It might not be perfect, and it might not be much to look at it, but it has its charm. |
| Half-Life's lone writer has left Valve after 18 years Posted: 08 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST Marc Laidlaw, co-creator and sole writer of the Half-Life franchise, has resigned from his position at Valve. He had worked at the Bellevue-based developer for 18 years at the time of his departure. The news comes as a result of a reddit user emailing Laidlaw about his frustrations over the currently-unannounced Half Life 3. Laidlaw responded by saying that he quit Valve recently and no longer acts as a spokesperson of any sort for the company. Laidlaw says that he quit for personal reasons, mostly so that he can focus on "self-directed writing projects." In addition to the reddit post, Gamasutra followed up with Laidlaw and can confirm the authenticity of the report. Laidlaw simply said "It is true. I left very recently," when prompted by Gamasutra. The question on most people's mind likely revolves around how Laidlaw's departure affects the possible development of Half-Life 3 or any other Half-Life sequels. The short, easy answer is, perhaps, that it doesn't. Writing is often a collaborative effort and one resignation won't often sink the ship. If Half-Life 3 is in the works, Laidlaw could have already written it; otherwise, the studio is teeming with creative minds who could probably fill those shoes and give us the next chapter in Gordon Freeman's saga. Valve just needs to give the green light. Sent an email to Marc Laidlaw about HL3. He answered. [reddit via Gamasutra] |
| Make Fallout 4 look a little more like Borderlands with this mod Posted: 08 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST PC gaming sure is great. Modder Reddit_is_wrong managed to craft his own visual overhaul mod for Fallout 4, and it brings the style more inline with Borderlands' cel-shading. Sure it isn't an exact 1:1 replica, but it looks close enough -- especially for a free mod that Bethesda would likely charge an arm and a leg for as DLC. Along with his "Cartoon" alteration is three different mods, including Darker Nights, Fr4nssons Light Tweak, and Fallout 4 Enhanced Color Correction. You can read the full instructions here. | If you log into Destiny in the next few days, you'll net bonus rewards Posted: 08 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST Bungie crafted an incentive for Destiny players to log on after a long winter break, and it's as easy as logging in and completing one activity (a PVP skirmish, for example). As of today you can pick up rewards, which includes 15 Strange Coins and 15 Motes of Light. The former can be used to buy Exotic items from the peddler Xur, and the latter levels up your weapons and armor. If you complete that event before the end of January 10, you'll net a special Emblem, to be delivered around the 12th. So yeah, that's it -- nothing to write home about -- but enough to log in and quit for. Destiny [Twitter] |
| The producer of Hyrule Warriors Legends sure can rock a scarf Posted: 08 Jan 2016 02:30 AM PST Although we've mostly just had clips leading up to the release of Hyrule Warriors Legends on 3DS, producer Yosuke Hayashi is rocking that amazing collector's edition scarf to bring you a 17-minute overview this week. There's a ton of info on the UI, as well as a clear look at the performance of the 3DS build. As a note, you'll need a New 3DS if you want to render the game in 3D, adding to the very small list of games that are either exclusive to the new system, or "soft exclusive" (like Legends). Hyrule Warriors Legends is set to launch on January 21 in Japan, and March in the west. |
| PSA: Super Hexagon is free this week on iOS Posted: 08 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST Super Hexagon, that game that was all the buzz back in 2013, is now free this week on iOS. Developed by Terry Cavanagh of VVVVVV fame, Hexagon is a twitch-heavy title with a good chiptune soundtrack. It's a pretty neat game, but I couldn't really stand to play it for more than a few days before I got bored. Since it's free, you have nothing to lose! Super Hexagon [iTunes] |
| Ubisoft provides help for prospective Assassin's Creed cosplayers Posted: 08 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST Say what you will about the Assassin's Creed series and Ubisoft's need to annualized it, but one thing's for sure -- the cosplay that's come out of this scene has been pretty awesome. Whether it's the flowing cloaks or the hidden blades, costumes generally stand out at cons and the like. To facilitate the hobby, Ubisoft has provided instructions for Shao Jun, Arbaaz Mir, and Nikolai Orelov, the newest assassins on the block, who star in the Chronicles series. It breaks down their outfits as well as their weapons. One could argue that that the executives generally don't care about fans (hence Uplay, microtransactions, and annual releases), but the publisher does do a lot of cool community outreach projects like this. | That bonkers unofficial open world Star Wars Kickstarter has been canceled Posted: 07 Jan 2016 11:25 PM PST A few days ago, on a PC far far away, someone wanted to create an open world Star Wars game. Note that this is a completely unofficial project that would have instantly been swallowed by Disney once it got wind of it. It was an insane notion for sure, but it managed to garner over $18,000 in tributes (which reminds me of that potato salad thing that I hope no one brings up again). Now, three days later, it's cancelled -- ironically, not by the hand of Disney. You can read the entire meltdown/cancellation notice below, and Game Informer even had a neat interview with him. Godspeed, "Devin." |
| DestrUKtoid Episode 31 - Cough of the Year Posted: 07 Jan 2016 11:00 PM PST The UK, it exists and Destructoid now has writers there. Great British Pounds. Eastenders. Steptoe and Son. The Destructoid UK Podcast (DestrUKtoid). This week UK Editor Laura Dale is joined by Joe Parlock and Vikki Blake to talk about Oculus pricing, our Game of the Year picks, and more terrible dad jokes. | Sony 'mistakenly' gives away wrong game in January's PlayStation Plus line-up Posted: 07 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST Remember when Sony said that PSP strategy game Legends of War: Patton’s Campaign was to be part of this month’s PlayStation Plus line-up? Er, that was a mistake. Apparently. In a tweet today, Sony has confirmed that the game was “mistakenly included” and will be withdrawn, but if you were quick off the draw and had already downloaded it, you’ll get to keep it for gratis. Yay for accidental free things! The game we are getting is PS Vita title History: Legends of War, so head on over to the PS Store and add this to your download list. Or not. I don't care, dude. HAPPY FRIDAY! <3 Sony accidentally included the wrong game in this month's PlayStation Plus update [VideoGamer] |
| Developer teases what's next for cult horror Outlast 2 Posted: 07 Jan 2016 08:00 PM PST Outlast II developer Red Barrels Games has dropped teasers as to what we can expect from the upcoming horror sequel. Replying to fans on Twitter, the developer hinted that the new game will take place "somewhat after" the events at Mount Massive, and the backdrop will not be an Asylum this time around. It also said that "yes, you will need to hide" when asked if the sequel's gameplay was likely to follow the original premise of hide 'n' seek. When asked if we could expect another free demo, the developer said it wasn't sure, but it may be possible if they "attend a major gaming expo." The game is expected to be ready in Q3 2016. Shudder. Not a lot to go on, I know, but as a rabid fan of the original, I'll take anything I can right now! |
| Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is probably coming to Steam Posted: 07 Jan 2016 07:00 PM PST My 2015 Game of the Year was The Chinese Room’s Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. It’s a beautiful game with a fantastic story, and easily the best soundtrack a game has had in a very in a long time. And now the chances of it coming to Steam have just massively increased. It was included in the big list of leaked upcoming Steam games a while ago, however there was no information about the game added at the time, so it could’ve just been a placeholder. Now it’s been discovered that banner art was added to the game's Steam database entry yesterday, meaning it may well be gearing up for an announcement very soon. It’s worth pointing out that while I consider this to be pretty conclusive evidence that a PC release is in the works, it’s not official until The Chinese Room announces it. But honestly, why would it put this much effort into updating a placeholder we knew about weeks ago, if it was never intended for release? I really hope we get an official confirmation very soon. Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is the sort of game I wish more people had played and enjoyed, so it being available on a whole new platform is really exciting. |
| A new Pokken Tournament character is being teased, and will be announced next week Posted: 07 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST Nintendo and Bandai Namco have teased that they will be announcing a new playable character for Pokkén Tournament on January 15. Apparently, the Pokémon will have the character ラ (“ra”) in its Japanese name, so I scoured through a list and found that there are 115 Pokémon it could be. Yeah, super helpful tease there, Nintendo. Thank you so much. To help cut things down a bit, here's a list of all the Pokémon with ラ in their Japanese name. Feel free to sing it all, PokeRap style: Metapod, Rattata, Raticate, Raichu, both Nidoran, Vileplume, Paras, Parasect, Kadabra, Tentacool, Tentacruel, Slowbro, Krabby, Kingler, Cubone, Marowak, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Chansey, Tangela, Kangaskhan, Seadra, Scyther, Jynx, Gyarados, Lapras, Aerodactyl, Cyndaquil, Quilava, Lanturn, Umbreon, Murkrow, Gligar, Granbull, Heracross, Sneasel, Kingdra, Hitmontop, Raikou, Larvitar, Pupitar, Tyranitar, Swampert, Mightyena, Silcoon, Ralts, Sableye, Aron, Lairon, Aggron, Electrike, Manectric, Plusle, Trapinch, Vibrava, Flygon, Lileep, Snorunt, Spheal, Sealeo, Gorebyss, Relicanth, Luvdisc, Latias, Latios, Groudon, Jirachi, Luxray, Rampardos, Shellos, Drifblim, Honchkrow, Bronzor, Chatot, Drapion, Lumineon, Weavile, Gliscor, Heatran, Giratina, Darkrai, Stoutland, Zebstrika, Timburr, Scolipede, Basculin, Maractus, Carracosta, Minccino, Cinccino, Solosis, Duosion, Reuniclus, Vanilluxe, Galvantula, Tynamo, Lampent, Chandlure, Heatmore, Hydreigon, Larvesta, Terrakion, Reshiram, Landorus, Frogadier, Spewpa, Flabebe, Floette, Florges, Malamar, Dragalge, Tyrunt, Tyrantrum, and Goomy. Sweet jesus, that's a lot of Pokémon. A lot of them are either already in the game, or just wouldn’t be a good fit, but there are plenty fan favourites too: Scyther, Kangaskan, Tyranitar, Groudon, all of the Hitmon-family, Swampert, Groudon, and Terrakion in particular all seem like they’d be right at home in Pokkén to me. More importantly though, Vanilluxe is on that list. If we don’t get to play as a Pokémon shaped like a goddamn Mr. Whippy, I’m sure there will be global civil unrest. We’ll find out for sure who it is come January 15. |
