Devs Play season two has over five hours of game makers chatting

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 02:00 PM PST

Whether it's games, movies, books, whatever, I love listening to creators talk about their craft. It can be enthralling to hear how the creative process differs between not only mediums, but individuals. One video series I'm fond of is Devs Play, a show put on by Double Fine and 2 Player Productions where seasoned developers chat about their games and share fun old anecdotes.

While the first season touched on a bunch of genres, season two is centered on platform-action games. Specifically: Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Assassin's Creed II, LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway, Crash Bandicoot, and Jak and Daxter.

With that last episode now on YouTube, I figured a roundup was in order. I'm only a few minutes in and Naughty Dog co-founder Jason Rubin has already spoken about how he split his time during development (half management, half particle systems) and how Jak was designed by committee, with different regions in mind, while Daxter had more of a singular vision. So, pretty good!

Sea of Solitude is like a 'mixture of Ghibli and Silent Hill'

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 01:00 PM PST

A young woman's loneliness turns her into a monster in a flooded city in Sea of Solitude, the upcoming game from developer Jo-Mei. CEO and creative director Cornelia Geppert gave handsome fellow Anthony Carboni an exclusive interview and sneak peek as seen above, revealing the first information we have had since the game's reveal in February of 2015.

For a game that I hadn't heard of till today, I for one can't wait to give this a play. Part Wind Waker, part Silent Hill, part Shadow of the Colossus, and part Ghibli sounds like a winning combination to me so long as it doesn't turn out like Submerged.

No release date or platforms have been announced for Sea of Solitude at this time.

Lucas amiibo available to pre-order at Amazon

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 11:48 AM PST

About a week after Best Buy opened pre-orders, Amazon has followed suit and put the Lucas amiibo up for sale. There's no telling how long he'll be available, but he's been up for quite a while today already.

Convenience is really the only thing at stake here, as Best Buy is currently only doing in-store pick-ups; it's likely that on the day of release, Best Buy will open online orders to be shipped.

Lucas officially releases on January 22, which isn't too far off in the distance. Interestingly, Lucas is the last Smash Bros. amiibo to launch until Roy, Ryu, and Famicom R.O.B. on March 18. Nice little lull there.

Battlefield Hardline gets Getaway DLC, if anyone's playing

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 10:30 AM PST

Sure, everyone's busying themselves on Battlefield: Star Wars, who wants to mess with a year-old, Visceral-developed Battlefield Hardline? Some people, maybe, as EA's Night at the Roxbury is still getting support. The Getaway expansion is out next week for Premium members, January 26 for the rest of us.

"Whether you’re making a dusty, high-speed escape across the Mexican border, or closing in on a hot pursuit along the sun-drenched Pacific coast, you’ll be chasing glory at top speed when you play Battlefield Hardline: Getaway." So if it's chase-based, it's more asymmetric than Hardline's initial offerings? Well, that's a positive (cops and criminals having the same objectives makes no sense).

Included in the DLC is:

  • Four maps: Pacific Highway, Double Cross, Train Dodge, and Diversion
  • New game mode: Capture the Bag
  • Four new vehicles
  • Three new weapons for the Mechanic Class
  • One new gadget and a new melee weapon
  • Four new Legendary Camos

There's also a free update to the base game, "with new weapons, patches, and ...a brand new way to play competitively." That's Competitive Match play with, "skill-based 5v5 matches, with regularly refreshed seasons, leaderboards, and winners."

The latest Mario Maker costume is a nod to Super Mario Land

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST

Nintendo has tied another Super Mario Maker costume to a branded level, but at least this time it's based on an existing part of the Mario universe (Super Mario Land), not a real-world car.

To earn the Sky Pop plane, you'll have to clear the "Southwest Air Adventure" found under the game's Event Courses category. There are a few different routes to take inside the level, but running full speed ahead is a viable strategy so long as you watch out for spikes and flames.

Hellblade will release on PS4 and PC at the same time

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 09:30 AM PST

Ninja Theory's (Enslaved, DmC) upcoming moody action game Hellblade will have the same release date on PS4 and PC, the company announced today on Twitter. The actual date has not been revealed.

That might go a good way towards ensuring the, "about 300K units [needed] to make its money back," as Ninja Theory's Dominic Matthews told me at gamescom in an interesting chat about the tenability of big-budget, high-fidelity development. Hellblade is the team's first independent game and it is only getting a digital release.

I enjoyed chatting about Ninja Theory's aim for Hellblade and I enjoyed playing it as well, early state that is was in. It has some interesting ideas on a small, intimate scale, but with AAA-style polish. The team regularly releases development diaries you can follow if inclined, too.

This Link Figma is so dang good

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST

I wasn't sure the cutesy Nendoroid Link could be topped, but this Figma based on The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is utterly wonderful. The classic look is my favorite to this day.

When the toy becomes available this summer in Japan, it'll be offered in two versions.

The basic package costs 4,630 yen and includes some accessories, but not all of them. To get the Tornado Rod, Hookshot, Maiamai, and everything else, you'll need to order the DX edition, which will be sold exclusively at Good Smile Company's online store for 5,556 yen.

Humble Weekly is all Tom Clancy games, including beta access for The Division

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 08:30 AM PST

A wide assortment of titles is nowhere to be found with this week's Humble Bundle. Instead, Tom Clancy is the name and tactical espionage is the game. It's the game about ten times over, in fact.

As a part of the build-up toward the March 8 release of The Division, Ubisoft is offering upward of ten past games from the franchise at a discount. The big draw for many people will likely be access to The Division's closed beta which was delayed to "early 2016" last month.

The breakdown of this Humble Bundle is that a contribution of $1 or more will net you Rainbow Six, Rainbow Six 3 Gold Edition (Raven Shield / Athena Sword), Rainbow Six Vegas, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and Ghost Recon. Paying more than the average ($8.07 at time of writing) gets you Rainbow Six Vegas 2, access to The Division's beta, Splinter Cell, and Splinter Cell Conviction Deluxe Edition.

For the higher tiers, those who pay $10 or more get Splinter Cell Blacklist and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Finally, anyone who chips in $75 or more gets The Division upon release, a Division t-shirt, and a coupon for 66 percent off any three Ubisoft games on the Humble store.

It's worth noting that all of the titles are tied to Uplay, likely a deal-breaker for some. If you're fine with it, here's a cheap opportunity to see much of the Tom Clancy library before Tom Clancy's Estate's The Division comes out.

Myles Cox's dope picks for Game of the Year 2015

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

Another year, another dollar -- that's what they say, right? More importantly, who is this mystery entity giving you a dollar every year? What the hell am I supposed to do with this dollar, slide it into my piggy bank and save for a rainy day? Is this punishment for my sins? Dollars are like the new pennies. Useless.

2015 is definitely a thing that happened, to all of us at the same time, and I think that is special. It was definitely a big year for me personally since it was the year I was hired here! Curse that god damned Mike Cosimano for roping me into this shit, like he always does. That man is like the plague. Avoid at all costs.

...We were talking about games, right? I didn't finish too many games this year; hell, I didn't even play many to begin with -- like Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, Star Wars: Battlefront, or even Xenoblade Chronicles X. I might get to those one day. But of the video games I did end up playing, you might even say I enjoyed a certain ten of them just a tiny bit more than the others, so much that I ordered them in a nice pretty little list.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is not on this list.

Rainbow Six Siege is getting better hit registration

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST

As it stands, Rainbow Six Siege is at the top of my "eventually!" list. While plenty of people seem to be enjoying the game as it stands, I'm fine waiting for Ubisoft to push out more patches. The latest update was released today for PC and is expected to hit consoles on Thursday, January 14.

The full patch notes are below, but if you aren't in a mood to sift through them, the big change relates to hit detection. After some initial testing, the server tick rate for Siege has been bumped from 30 to 60 for all PC players. Assuming all goes according to plan, console players can expect to see the same improvement "as soon as possible."

The next update, 1.3, should also make it out this month. Ubisoft has a known issues thread here.

Far Cry Primal's PC specs are a wild beast tamed

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST

Like its animals that can be turned into tender companions, Far Cry Primal's PC requirements had the opportunity to cause havoc. That has certainly been the case with some recent high-profile games, such as Star Wars Battlefront and it asking for 16GB RAM.

A better comparison is with Far Cry 4. It might be expected that they line up perfectly given that Primal is built on the framework of Far Cry 4. Surprisingly, that's not quite the case; the two keep dancing around one another but never quite fall in sync. Primal actually has lower minimum requirements, and then higher optimal specs (Far Cry 4's were far from high-end in the first place, requiring an i5 processor for an ideal experience).

Here's the bare minimum you'll need to be able to run Far Cry Primal on PC:

Adr1ft hits Steam first on March 28

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 06:30 AM PST

The lonely first-person space adventure Adr1ft was previously confirmed as an Oculus Rift launch title, and that's still the plan. It will launch on March 28, 2016 for Steam (virtual reality is optional; you won't need a Rift to play), followed by PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions "shortly after."

Based on my hands-on time with the game, it's sufficiently nerve-wracking even without the immersion of VR. The sound design does its job and then some. Breathe, damn it, breathe!

Destructoid's most wanted games of 2016

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

While 2015 might have been a rathole of a year, a terrible time for all parties involved, it at least had better games than 2014. That year sucked. With the current generation of consoles finally hitting their stride (and a possible new one from Nintendo), could 2016 keep that momentum trending forward?

Maybe everything will right itself. Giants go win another world series, Tony Hawk is elected the 45th president of these United States of America, the Coca-Cola polar bears get dentures to replace their decomposed soda fangs, I'm awarded a $6.9 million cash prize for "Best in Sex" -- it's just a return to normalcy I'm seeking after the murderous roller coasted that was 2015.

Here is a list of games we're looking forward to in 2016, provided they aren't delayed into 2017. So much potential disappointment!

Far Cry Primal won't have any co-op

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 05:30 AM PST

You won't be playing with anyone other than tigers, wolves, and whatever beasts are in Far Cry Primal. Community manager Jason Paradise confirmed on the game's Steam forum that Far Cry Primal is going to be a single-player only experience with some PR speak thrown in for good measure.

"We are focusing entirely on creating the best possible Far Cry experience for our fans. Bringing the Stone Age to life and providing players with a strong gameplay experience based off of the Far Cry legacy meant we had to reinvent our core gameplay loop. This was definitely not a small undertaking. Our focus was on delivering this fantasy which required clear priorities for the team. Therefore, in the early stages of the project, we made the difficult choice of focusing our efforts on the single player experience."

While one of my favorite parts of Far Cry 4 was the absolutely stupid shit you could get up to with the right co-op partner, maybe it makes sense for Primal to be a solo experience. I love co-op, but I want it to fit and make sense in a game instead of being tacked on just for the sake of including it.

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir getting a Japan demo soon, two new modes revealed

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir is coming along nicely, and Vanillaware is keen to expand upon some of the new content included in the re-release. By completing the game once you'll unlock "Xtra New Game," which allows you to retain all of your data but restart the game on a select difficulty. Then you have "Hell" difficulty, which you can pick right off the bat without unlocking it. There's also a 30-round boss rush mode in tow with the ability to choose any character at will.

Also, Japan will be getting a demo on January 8, and it apparently features all five characters. If you happen to have a Japanese PSN account, go ahead and give it go -- you won't regret it. Or you could forgo the demo altogether, as Leifthrasir is launching in Japan on January 14 on PS3, PS4, and Vita.

Unravel's Yarny came from the ideas of love and connectedness

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 04:30 AM PST

We've been pretty enamored with the feels-like-an-indie-but-is-actually-EA-published puzzle platformer since we first saw it last year. At the time, director Martin Sahlin got up on stage and talked about his inspiration for the yarny protagonist, Yarny.

This video goes a bit further in depth with that story, explaining how the threads of yarn represent connectedness, bridging items that are meant to be a together. It's just as adorable as ever.

Unravel releases in just about a month, hitting PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One on February 9.

Here's what Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) looks like on location

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST

I had the chance to attend the Awesome Games Done Quick event at the Hilton Washington Dulles Airport Hotel (right near Super Smash Con), and in addition to all of the great runs so far, it's been one of my favorite industry events in recent history. What I love most about it is that while it maintains a high energy level with plenty of enthusiastic runners and watchers, it doesn't feel overcrowded, and is much more tight-knit than you'd expect. While I've enjoyed the last few MAGFests, it's gotten so much bigger than it has in the past, and it's easy to get overwhelmed, especially in the gigantic Gaylord Hotel venue.

The layout of AGDQ is rather easy to navigate, as the hotel basically consists of a small series of hallways, forking into the main stage, practice room, and play areas. There's plenty of board games available, as well as an entire zone dedicated to Super Smash Bros., and a free play arcade (complete with X-Men Arcade and the "no Colossus yell" sign). More people start to fill the halls after 5PM ET as a general rule, but again, it never feels like anything you want to do is unattainable. As a result, I'd easily recommend attending if you're able, or at least think about coming next year.

At the time of this writing ADGQ2016 has raised nearly $500,000 to support the Prevent Cancer foundation. It will run through January 10, and will end with Bloodborne, fan favorite Super Metroid, and Final Fantasy IV. Check out the full schedule here.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 open beta starts this month

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST

Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 is getting a beta soon, and you probably shouldn't miss it. It'll feature a King of the Hill-like mode, a 24-person gametype, and four maps.

The beta will begin on January 14, and end on January 18. It's apparently open to all PS4 and Xbox One owners, so feel free to just jump in. I'll definitely be there, as the first game is one of my favorite shooters in recent memory.

Nintendo Download: Wild Gunman

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

Nintendo isn't really picking up steam after a number of meh weeks on the eShop, as the Wii U is only getting a few Virtual Console games today -- Hogan's Alley, Wild Gunman, and The Adventures of Bayou BillyBilly is particularly memorable, due to the fact that my mom rented it for me as a kid and I was beyond frustrated with it. Every so often I go back to experience it and revel in how janky it is. The Wii U is also getting Avoider, Discovery, and Tabletop Gallery.

On the 3DS, you can download My Pets, and Ocean Runner. Yep.

Final Fantasy IX on PC will have the option to turn off random encounters

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 02:30 AM PST

Final Fantasy IX will arrive on PC this month with a few bells and whistles in tow, according to the game's official Steam page. Evidently there will be seven game boosters in this version, including "high speed" and "no encounter" modifications.

These features aren't particularly new, as they've been in recent re-releases like Final Fantasy VII on PS4, but it's appreciated. A lot of classic JRPGs are just that -- classic -- but the time sink involved with high random encounter rates kills me sometimes. It's nice to know that you can turn off trash fights and focus on prepping for the main encounters.

Sure, I'll watch another Spelunky speedrun

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST

Spelunky has become one of the more popular speedrunning titles recently, and for good reason. This week AGDQ took it on as a part of their festivities, and this particular "all shortcuts + Olmec relay" run by BumCommando is definitely worth watching.

Where AGDQ really separates itself is its commentary. They generally walk you through every step of the way, and offer up tips for prospective players and runners (like the fact that if you take more than 20.9 seconds on a map, the next map has a chance of becoming dark), as well as an explanation of what's going on in the run. If you're struggling with Spelunky still, it's worth a watch.

They even got the creator on the phone!

Kaz Hirai: 'about 100 or more titles' in development for PlayStation VR

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 01:30 AM PST

Sony hasn't made a lot of noise about its virtual reality headset at CES this year (especially considering the hubbub surrounding Oculus Rift's pricing). The BBC asked Sony CEO Kaz Hirai about it, and he shared some news that might please those whose main concern is whether the platform will lack compatible games compared to its PC competition.

"We have more than 200 developers signed up for the PlayStation VR program, who are working on probably 100 or more titles that will play on PlayStation VR," Hirai said. Note the careful language; no indication is given for how many titles play exclusively on VR, how many feature optional VR throughout, and how many contain only a VR component in addition to the more traditional content.

Pirates concerned that in two years, games will be too tough to crack

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST

Games are becoming too hard to crack, it seems. According to Torrent Freak, one particular group is finding it tough to solve Denuvo, a new "anti-tamper" technology. The particularly tough games last year involved Dragon Age: Inquisition and Just Cause 3, and it seems like some individuals think that it's the end of AAA piracy as we know it.

According to the founder of 3DM, "I still believe that [Just Cause 3] can be compromised. But according to current trends in the development of encryption technology, in two years time I’m afraid there will be no free games to play in the world."

Throughout the years, publishers have gotten much wiser as a result of piracy. They've generally made their products easier to attain, and in the case of HBO in particular (where Game of Thrones was the most pirated shows for years), they finally caved and allowed people to buy an HBO Now subscription, free of the tethers of a cable package. I wonder how piracy will continue to influence the industry going forward.

This Bloodborne comic is too cool for still images

Posted: 07 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST

The hunt is a wonderful, terrible thing. A sentiment perfectly captured in this gorgeous, lightly animated Bloodborne webcomic, The Master of the League.

You ever run into something that just leaves you wondering "how the hell have I never heard of this before?" That's exactly how I felt when someone linked me to the wonderful Lordran and Beyond. How the heck have I missed this gem for so long? Lordran and Beyond is an on-going "series" of Dark Souls and Bloodborne related comics. But rather than tease out some long-winded plot or try to retell the events of the game, the comic is divided into separate small, charming, and often sad, stories from the world of From Software's games. They're fantastic.

It's like they saw me yapping about how I don't read many webcomics anymore and wanted to make a liar out of me.

League of Legends' newest champion tease reminds me of the Hannibal TV show

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 11:30 PM PST

Riot Games is teasing its next Champion for League of Legends, by way of a video called "Mind of the Virtuoso." Sporting a Dishonored-like mask, they artfully turn someone into a tree with a bullet, which reminds me of Hannibal's awesome surrealistic approach in the TV show.

I haven't had a chance to play League much lately as most of my friends have moved to Heroes of the Storm, but I'll be giving this Champion and Illaoi a go pretty soon, whenever the former arrives.

2015 was the Japanese games industry's worst year on record

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST

According to Famitsu’s annual report (via VG24/7), the Japanese games industry was worth ¥321 billion - that’s a 13 percent drop from the previous year.

Although these figures do not take into account digital sales (which, let’s face it, surely must be increasing year-on-year -- particularly with the rise of the mobile game market), console sales fell 8.5 percent and software sales dropped 16 percent, making this the least profitable year in 26 years.

In regards to traditional sales, last year’s leader was Monster Hunter X, which has sold 2.4 million copies since its launch in November, 2015 -- an interesting tidbit, given Nintendo otherwise dominates the sales chart.

Oculus Rift boss: 'shipping a consumer product is more complex than janking out a dev kit'

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 08:22 PM PST

Oculus Rift boss Palmer Luckey has apologised for suggesting that the VR product would cost “in the ballpark” of $350, admitting that he “handled the messaging poorly.”

Responding to comments on a lengthy reddit AMA thread from commenters who suggested early reports of a $350 pricetag were misleading, Luckey said “to be perfectly honest, our biggest failing was assuming we had been clear enough about setting expectations”..

“As an explanation, not an excuse: during that time, many outlets were repeating the ‘Rift is $1500!’ line, and I was frustrated by how many people thought that was the price of the headset itself. My answer was ill-prepared, and mentally, I was contrasting $349 with $1500, not our internal estimate that hovered close to $599 – that is why I said it was in roughly the same ballpark.”

This fab looking Attack on Titan fangame has released its first playable alpha

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 07:00 PM PST

If the wait for Koei Tecmo’s Attack on Titan game is too long for you, and you’ve already played Fenglee’s awesome fangame to death as I have, developer Guedin’s got you covered.

Guedin has released the first playable alpha and a new video of their fantastic looking Attack on Titan fangame. Right now the beta is simply a tutorial to get to grips with the 3D Maneuver Gear (zippy grappling hook) mechanics, and there aren’t any actual titans to fight, but even then what there is right now is massively impressive.

The movement seems way more fluid than Koei Tecmo’s game, and the art style is a bit more refined than Fenglee’s. From the tutorial, I found the combat a little bit tricky – I couldn’t kill the wooden dummy titan – but there’s obviously a lot of enthusiasm pumped into this project. I’m really excited to see where it goes from here!

The alpha is available to download on IndieDB and GameJolt, and other videos of the game in action are available on Guedin’s YouTube page.

The very first level of Mirror's Edge is being remade in Dying Light

Posted: 06 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST

I know the original Mirror’s Edge like the back of my hand. That’s doubly true for the very first level, as it was in the demo, and is also the best level in the full release. I’ve probably played that level hundreds of times by now, so take it from me that this recreation with Dying Light’s mod tools is ridiculously faithful.

Developed by modder Elimina, this WIP map aims to be an exact 1:1 remake of Mirror’s Edge’s prologue, made using 108 different screenshots to make sure everything is in the right place. If you want to compare it to the original level, here is a speedrun. There are a few places where the proportions don't seem to be quite right, but I assume that's to ensure it's actually playable in Dying Light.

Right now, the level ends once you’ve escaped the building, which is just about the half-way point through the level. Unfortunately, while Elimina has a list of things that need doing to finish the map, the modder may be too busy for the time being to get it done.

Either way, this is super cool. Many games have tried first-person parkour since Mirror’s Edge, but Dying Light is the first game I feel’s actually managed to pull it off well. I’m definitely giving this a go as soon as I can!

Oh, and Elimina also did a 1:1 recreation of Assassin’s Creed 2 and Brotherhood’s Monteriggioni as well.

Site maintenance note: brief downtime this week late at night

Cut yourself under a red lightbulb and play Portishead: Destructoid will go do down sometime this week between 9pm and 5am CST for a few minutes. This will primarily impact our sleepless US readers and Dtoiders in the UK and abroad. Sorry, broads.

Our most excellent hosting company (Incero) is physically moving our servers, so inevitably we'll have some outages during those hours. You'll still see a cached version of our most popular pages during this time, but you won't be able to quickpost or blog until the migration is complete.

My sincerest apologies. Also, here's a cat in a monkey costume.
