If you've yet to be convinced to try out Sony's streaming service PlayStation Now, it's just added forty more PS3 games to get you off of that fence. Just because I love all of you and I have a few minutes to spare, I'm going to manually copy and paste all of the new additions:

I got through 75% of that list before I realized that having two windows up and typing each title would be faster, but oh well.

If you're interested in any of those (oh man, Wakeboarding HD! Somebody pinch me!), subscribing for a year is $99.99. That deal ends on Monday, January 11, so jump on it soon if you want. Me? I'll be googling Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late.

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ expansion will have new items, bosses, and possibly your voice

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 02:30 PM PST

I haven't even touched The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth yet (I'm waiting for the PlayStation 4 version since that's where my save file is), yet Edmund McMillen and Tyrone Rodriguez are already talking up the next expansion, Afterbirth+. Rodriguez says it will be paid DLC just like Afterbirth, but will include new items, enemies, and "rad" bosses.

These additions are almost expected at this point, but there's more. Mod support is coming, though you will have to pay for the expansion to use it. When a hypothetical consumer poses the question "Why are we paying for mod support?" Rodriguez explains "Technically, you’re not. Remember, this is an expansion just like Afterbirth. Trust me, it’ll be worth it, you’ll love it." So we'll see about that!

If you want to, you can now replace the voice packs. That sounds like fun voice over practice to me, though I don't know if I'll find the time to make all of those fart noises into a mic.

On the release date front, Afterbirth+ will be coming later this year on Windows, Linux, and OSX, with a possible PS4 and Xbox One version available as well. Mod support will only be on the Windows version. As far as Afterbirth on consoles goes, it'll be ready on PS4 and Xbox One between Q1 and Q2 of this year. I'm ready to dive back into the poop.

So the free-to-play Tap My Katamari - Endless Cosmic Clicker is finally available on Android and iOS devices, pending you live outside the US, but hopefully that will be remedied soon. Since I haven't played the game, all I've got to go by is the above video and the game's description:

"You are the Prince, tasked by The King of All Cosmos to restore the universe and its stars. To do so, you've been given the Katamari, a magical ball that makes everything it touches stick to it. Grow your Katamari into a star and restore the universe!

Torment: Tides of Numenera's beta nears

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 01:00 PM PST

Torment: Tides of Numenera has been taking its time, but the beta will be out before long.

All eligible crowdfunding backers will gain access during the week of January 17, 2016 (exact date TBA). Then, on January 26, the beta will see a wider release via Steam Early Access.

InXile's Brian Fargo describes this upcoming build as "quite lengthy for an early beta," noting that it covers "the game's introductory sequence (some of which you may have already seen a portion of in the alpha) as well as most of the first major location of the game, Sagus Cliffs."

For those of you who have kept up with Torment throughout its production, are you still excited?

Cloud none: Square Enix to dissolve Shinra Technologies

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

In late 2014 Square Enix announced the formation of a new subsidiary company, Shinra Technologies. The Final Fantasy VII-nodding company name works on two levels, as Shinra's focus was cloud gaming, aiming to "break the stranglehold of having a fixed amount of hardware resources."

Shinra's aim was to deliver high-performance games -- "revolutionary game experiences" -- without users needing computers (or any dedicated hardware) that cost thousands of dollars; instead, far off, dedicated supercomputers would power these experiences that could be played on much less impressive tech. In early 2015 the company showed off a huge open world tech demo with thousands of colorful imp monsters flying about. Later in the year the company announced a partnership with Human Head (Prey 2, RIP) to work on a game.

Now, the company's site has gone dark. The Wall Street Journal's Takashi Mochizuki spotted a release in Japanese that points to Shinra Technologies being dissolved, according to Mochizuki, "due to lack of third-party [investors]." The release also cites a related "extraordinary loss" of 2 billion yen (roughly $16.9 million) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016. New York-based Shinra Technologies will be completely liquidated by March 31, 2019, while subsidiary Shinra Technologies Japan will be gone by June 30, 2016.

My favorite Twitter parody account, gaming-related or otherwise, is @KazHiraiCEO. By far. But I don't even need to follow the faux Sony CEO account these days! Sooner or later, all of the tweets end up in the comments here. And they're so darn funny that I don't mind it one bit.

Based on this photo from The Verge out of the Consumer Electronics Show 2016, Kaz seems to like the tweets, too. (Or at least tolerates their continued existence and popularity.) What a good sport.

An official Rick and Morty Pokemon parody game is coming this month

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 11:30 AM PST

Adult Swim just teased Pocket Mortys, a new mobile game (Android and iOS) coming January 14, and I'm pretty stoked about it. Simply put, it seems to ape Pokemon, with a Rick and Morty tint to it -- it's a free game, so the jury is out on IAP (mobile microtransactions) though. In case you're confused, universes that involve multiple versions of Morty is a common theme in the show, as Morty's grandfather Rick travels through space and time.

I didn't end up catching Ricky and Morty until Season 1 had ended and the second season was underway, but man I'm glad I did. I always hear the same thing from most people who are down on it -- "the first few episodes are boring and weird." Well, it stays weird, but it gets so much better as time goes on, and the latest season had a few great episodes that reminded me of the best parts of other great cartoon social commentaries, like Rocko's Modern Life.

Notable Japanese developers share their plans for 2016

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 11:00 AM PST

Once again, Weekly Famitsu polled a bunch of Japanese game developers about their aspirations for the new year. Perusing this summary provided by Gematsu, a few responses stood out.

"We'll safely release Persona 5 in 2016... I think," said director Katsura Hashino, who was presumably having a bit of fun. (Uh, right? Right?) In the event the game's release does slip, I'm afraid Steven may enter a deep slumber the likes of which not even a mystery grab bag full of puppies could wake him from. Rest easy, my sleeping beauty.

Further down the list, Killer7 and No More Heroes' Suda51 reminds us that the strange survival action title Let it Die is still happening. "Don't worry, we're making it," he told the publication.

Then there's Masahiro Sakurai, a man whose health and happiness I am genuinely concerned about. The dedicated Super Smash Bros. director says he wants to "enjoy every day like it's Sunday," but "that doesn't mean the next job hasn't been decided."

Nintendo has refurbished 2DS units for $60

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 10:30 AM PST

Not keen on the New 3DS and simply want a console to play those 3DS titles you've been itching to get your hands on? You're in luck. Nintendo is offloading some refurbished 2DS units for only $60 on its eBay store (aka the online outlet store for many retailers).

This deal is relatively rare/special given the retailer is Nintendo itself (we've seen refurb 2DS systems before from other retailers). The offer is also available online at the Nintendo Store, but you'll be subjected to shipping fees, whereas on eBay it's free.

Interesting enough, a refurbished white Wii U deluxe set with digital copies of Super Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land is also on sale at $235. Its not a bad deal, all things considered, given that it has a full year of warranty similar to the 2DSes being offered.

Review: Minecraft: Story Mode: A Block and a Hard Place

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST

What a weird episode. After the high energy of The Last Place You Look, this one slows down the action shortly into it, and it doesn't really pick back up until the very end, which feels like the end of a season. But then, there's still another episode after this.

It's hard to fault Telltale for switching up the formula a bit, but it feels like the first season is essentially complete at this point, and anything that could happen during the final episode will just be a lead-in to the next season. It might be better if this were just a four-episode series.

Brain training game owes FTC $2 million over false advertising

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 09:30 AM PST

Lumosity is an online puzzle game platform that fancies itself a brain trainer and uses a lot of science claims to back that up -- and to validate its $120/year subscription fee paid by possibly 60 million members (I imagine some of these accounts could be lapsed subscribers, trial signups that never made it into the paid phase; still, 60 million).

But the FTC won't let it be. Lumosity settled with the Federal Trade Commission, agreeing to pay $2 million for its "deceptive and unfounded" claims of cognitive improvement.

"Lumosity preyed on consumers’ fears about age-related cognitive decline, suggesting their games could stave off memory loss, dementia, and even Alzheimer’s disease," Bureau of Consumer Protection director Jessica Rich said. "But Lumosity simply did not have the science to back up its ads."

Pillars of Eternity: The White March - Part 2 coming Feb 16

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 08:30 AM PST

The concluding part of the White March expansion for Pillars of Eternity, the unfussily-named The White March - Part 2, has a formal release date: February 16.

While I'd prefer Don Pilar for an eternity, the expansion, "not only adds new content to the Pillars of Eternity universe, but also allows players to experience the conclusion of the stories told in The White March – Part 1, bringing the first epic chapter of Pillars of Eternity to a close. Players will find a variety of new challenges waiting for them in the snowy borderlands of the Eastern Reach, along with new quests, new abilities and a raised level cap, and a new companion: Meneha, the Barbarian."

A new optional "Story Time" mode lets you go through the Pillars narrative at an even quicker clip if losing dozens of hours to an RPG is too much for you.

Josh Tolentino's personal picks for Game of the Year 2015

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

As Chris Carter likes to say, every year is a good year for games if you look hard enough. That said, 2015 seemed particularly fecund, thanks to a particularly diverse selection of things I ended up liking quite a bit. From out-of-nowhere indie productions to highly anticipated franchise releases, I was never lacking for something worth playing.

Now, freed from the tyranny of democratic selection, I'm free to talk about my favorite games of last year. And because I can, I'll also be highlighting my favorite anime series of last year. While the ranked toplists of the best shows are over at our sister site Japanator, this piece is where I get to mash together my favorite games and anime of the preceding year in an absurdly contrived set of award categories, as the gods intended.

Let me save you the trouble: Disney's gonna shut you down, bud

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 07:43 AM PST

As a rule, I don't write about Kickstarters unless they're run by an established developer like Harmonix or Double Fine. It's true -- in my near-2,000 posts for this site, I can't remember a time when I've written about a specific crowdfunding project. There's just too much that could go wrong for the consumer/backer/investor and I don't think it's worth the risk. If it gets funded, sure, then I'll write about it; then it's just a video game that's in development like all others.

I'm going to break that rule just once. There's a newly-launched Kickstarter for an open-world Star Wars RPG. It's asking for $200,000 to happen (more than $8,000 has been pledged at time of writing because the Internet thinks this is funny). The creator self-professes that he is "not a very good programmer and an even worse artist." That's where the $200,000 comes in -- he wants to hire professionals to do it.

I could spend time writing about how $200,000 is an extremely modest budget for a game that the creator wants to "completely blow people away, like Fallout 3 or The Witcher 3 did." I could talk about how the creator's experience with making games is limited to "I have owned businesses ranging from clothing to stocks." I could poke fun at the estimated delivery time of October 2016, indicating that this person thinks it's possible to create a game that's on-par with The Witcher 3 from scratch in ten months. [Correction: The Kickstarter lists December 2017 as the targeted release date.]

Instead, I will just say that this is all for naught. Disney, avid protector of its properties, will shut this down as soon as it possibly can. It's mentioned that the creator is "looking into talking with Disney" to see if this project has its blessing. Let me save you some time: No. No, it isn't possible that Disney trusts you with one of its most valuable properties. A cease and desist might hit your inbox before I can hit the publish button. If it doesn't, that's because someone at Disney also thinks this is funny. But, attorneys aren't typically the type to find anything funny.

You're probably very excited at the quick growth of your Kickstarter. Four people have even contributed $1,500 to the cause! That's a lot of money -- a lot of money that they know will never ever leave their checking accounts. I hate to be the one to obliterate your dreams. It's admirable that you shot for the moon, hoping to land among the stars; just know that you can't land among the Star Wars.

Final Fantasy XIII's Lightning ad campaign confirmed for Louis Vuitton

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST

I feel like a lot of the time when people dump on Lightning, calling her a bad character, they haven't played all of the proper Final Fantasy games she's in. Well I have, and even though I loved Lightning Returns, she's still a bad character -- now she's invading more than just every other Final Fantasy game, but real life as well. There is no escape.

Louis Vuitton has confirmed that Lightning will model for the spring-summer 2016 collection, called "Series 4." She'll appear in magazine ads for the month of January, as well as various promotional videos. I'm considering getting a copy of that mag for my potential future daughter, so she can share the pain of having to deal with 10 more years of Lighting right alongside all of us.

It's the best marriage of something popular and Louis Vuitton since Kayne's "Last Call."

Before there was an abundance of rhythm games out there with plastic peripherals, there were developers like Harmonix leading the way with controller-based experiences. Along with some long sessions of Gitaroo Man and PaRappa, Frequency and Amplitude were a few of my favorites. Nearly everyone I showed them to fell in love with them all the same.

Harmonix's newest Amplitude reboot gets the foundation right, but some of its soul has been lost in the process of remaking it.

Take that, Konami: Kojima to be honored at D.I.C.E. Awards ceremony

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 06:30 AM PST

Remember last month when Konami barred Kojima from The Game Awards? We all do, and likely won't stop talking about it anytime soon. Thankfully he's out in the wild again, making games with a brand new studio, and he's about to be honored properly, at a ceremony he's allowed to attend.

At the upcoming the 19th D.I.C.E. Awards ceremony on February 18, 2016 in Las Vegas, Kojima will be inducted into The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. Oh, and Guillermo del Toro will present the award. It's like the cycle of hell for Kojima has come full circle, and now he's free.

We investigated Riot Games' new owner and its Chinese social credit system

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

When I originally reported on Chinese holding company Tencent's purchase of League of Legends developer Riot Games, I let you all down. I spent time looking into Tencent's numerous endeavors, but it appears I only scratched the surface. As of writing, the top comment on my story is a link to an Extra Credits video that exposes a system by the name of "Sesame Credit."

The video picks apart Sesame Credit, a supposed collaboration between Tencent and Chinese eBay equivalent Alibaba, revealing a number of ugly hypotheticals. The system, as laid out by the Extra Credits team, is a hybrid between a financial credit score and the social credit app from that one episode of Community; be a good Chinese citizen and your score goes up, giving you more privileges as a result. The video also claims that the system will be mandatory by the year 2020. If this is true, my initial appraisal of the purchase was missing an enormous variable.

Here's the rub (and the reason why I'm not just writing an article on Sesame Credit). Shortly after the video was posted in the comments, we received a comment from a Chinese citizen debunking many of Extra Credits' claims. It makes the system appear toothless -- and even complicates matters by separating Tencent from Alibaba. So, like an episode of Serial, I'm going to lay out everything I know about this story in the hopes of figuring out just who owns one of the biggest video games in the world. We're going to put our hands on every part of this elephant, or die trying.

Oculus Rift dev kit backers are getting a free finalized Rift

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 05:30 AM PST

Ahead of Oculus Rift pre-orders opening tomorrow morning (price still TBA), Oculus has a nice surprise: the thousands of Kickstarter backers who pledged for a Rift Development Kit 1 will receive a free Kickstarter Edition Oculus Rift (including the pack-in games EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale).

"To claim your free Rift, fill out the survey you'll receive from Kickstarter before February 1, 2016 and provide a shipping address that is located in one of the 20 countries Rift is launching in," reads today's announcement. "For those who don't live in one of those 20 countries, we're working on an alternative, and you can let us know your preference in the form."

This is a smart move on Oculus' part and a good use of that marketing budget. It's crucial for the company to keep early adopters in its good graces going forward.

You call the shots with one of the two new Xbox One bundles

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

The holiday season is over, but Microsoft hasn't given up hope of selling more consoles. The platform-holder has segued right into the new year with a new set of Xbox One bundles. One has you calling the shots, the other has you calling the cops.

As revealed on Major Nelson's site, a "Name the game" promotion lets the consumer pick up a 500GB HDD Xbox One and either Rise of the Tomb Raider, Rare Replay, Forza Motorsport 6, or Gears of War Ultimate Edition for $349. This offer hits some markets next week, but comes to the US and Canada in "late January."

The second (and pricier) option releases today and packs together Ubisoft's new multiplayer shooter Rainbow Six Siege with a 1TB HDD Xbox One for $399. It's $50 more and sacrifices flexibility, but that extra storage space will certainly come in handy down the road. This set also comes with Rainbow Six Vegas and Rainbow Six Vegas 2; both released several years ago on Xbox 360, but are playable though the magic of backward compatibility.

Bombshell's final voice cast revealed in latest trailer

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 04:30 AM PST

So, Bombshell is still happening, and it's actually coming out this month. Who knows how it will turn out? Right now it looks like it could be a decent little top-down shooter, but so many of those have let me down in the past.

In this newest video there's a quick look at the voice cast for the core hero and villain, which includes Valerie Arem (Bombshell) and Jon St. John (the villain Professor Jadus Heskel). Most people might know the former as Naoto Shirogane from select Persona games, and the latter, of course, is Duke Nukem himself.

Akuma is likely the only Tekken 7 crossover character

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST

Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada recently had a chance to clarify the Akuma and Tekken 7 crossover, noting that he was the only planned Street Fighter character at this time that would make an appearance. Harada says that he has "always been against" guest characters, but since Akuma "fits the bill," he could easily be tied into the story.

With the demonic pull and tint of the Mishima family, I definitely agree that Akuma and his Dark Hado backstory are easily entwined. Harada teases that they are open to more crossovers in the future (also known as money), but for now, this is it.

Sony, don't play with my heart

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST

A few developers have been sharing their support for the Year of the Monkey to kick off 2016, including Vanillaware, but this tweet from Sony really hit me -- "2016 Year of the Monkey. Today, SCE will begin working!" It seems innocent enough, but it features a monkey from Ape Escape -- a series that isn't technically defunct -- but has been woefully underrepresented for years.

I still remember the first time I ever played the first title, and how I instantly fell in love with the various gadgets (especially the Sky Flyer). It was a rare instance where I was completely enthralled while 100%-ing a game the entire time, and the extra ending was totally worth it. Ape Escape 2 and 3 managed to mostly recapture that magic, but I wasn't the biggest fan of most of the spinoffs.

I mean, Sony is technically celebrating the series with a PS2-to-PS4 re-release for 2 and 3, sometime this year, but a man can dream.

Japanese dev Kaga Create shuts down because it can't compete with mobile games

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST

Another Japanese developer has shut down -- this time, it's Kaga Create.

The company has been operating since 1988, developing games for the PC Engine, the Game Boy, SNES, and many other consoles. After some time (around the Wii) it stopped making its own games, but instead handled development for other Japanese studios, as well as handling publishing by way of CyberFront Corporation.

Now it's being closed down because it "was not able to create a large enough growth potential in today’s smartphone app-focused video games market."

A Boy and His Blob is coming to PC, PS4, Vita, and Xbox One!

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia is one of the first games I played on my NES, so I was thrilled to find out that we were getting a new entry on the Wii back in 2009. Sadly it hasn't made the jump to other platforms, so a lot of people I know hadn't heard of it before -- until now, that is!

It looks like our suspicions were correct -- Majesco has announced that A Boy and His Blob will be released on PC, PS4, Vita, and Xbox One this month, on January 19. It seems to be a straight port, improved to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second. We don't have a pricepoint yet, but it's good news all around.

Rise of the Tomb Raider officially coming to PC on January 28

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 02:30 AM PST

As Lara Croft is constantly in search of treasure, Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics is constantly in search of sales. After hitting the one million mark right out the gate on Xbox platforms, the game's fortunes will likely improve substantially with its PC release, which is in little more than three weeks' time.

Crystal Dynamics confirmed today that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be available on PC through Steam and the Windows 10 store on January 28. It has been outed in recent weeks as a January release, but the exact timetable wasn't clear.

In all, Microsoft's timed-exclusivity deal looks to have been good for a little less than three months. Rise of the Tomb Raider launched on November 10 on Xbox platforms; January 28 marks just more than 11 weeks after the fact.

Of course, Sony users will likely have to wait considerably longer. Rise of the Tomb Raider isn't expected to be made available on PS4 until the end of 2016 (although that's mostly speculation). Microsoft's main goal is to play keep-away from Sony, not so much the PC segment that isn't necessarily viewed as a direct competitor.

Review: Rise of the Tomb Raider: Endurance Mode

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST

I'm surprised how much mileage I've gotten out of Rise of the Tomb Raider. While most developers are keen on stuffing multiplayer into every single project, Crystal Dynamics did the right thing but nixing it in Rise, instead adding in a much more enticing Expeditions gametype.

Endurance Mode isn't exactly as thrilling as it sounds, but it expands upon Expeditions quite well.

In March of last year, Descendent Studios launched its Kickstarter for Descent: Underground with the expectation of launching the game in March of this year. Yesterday, the Early Access game was available for less than the price of a cup of coffee.

Sony boasts 5.7 million PS4 units sold this holiday, total tops 35.9 million

Posted: 05 Jan 2016 12:04 AM PST

Microsoft recently boasted about its holiday sales numbers, and now, it's Sony's turn. Sony is reporting that during this holiday season (late November to early January), it sold more than 5.7 million PS4s. Right now, overall sales are at 35.9 million -- a figure that Microsoft has ceased to even share.

Sony also notes that software sales were high, and totaled over 35 million units on Sony platforms during the aforementioned holiday period. Additionally, "60% more users" subscribed to PlayStation Plus when compared to the last holiday season.

Well, Sony is certainly sitting high this generation after fumbling the PS3. It's a shame, because the Xbox One is such a good console in its current iteration, that this blowout likely could have been avoided if Microsoft hadn't utterly shat the bed with its DRM strategy. It still kills me that Sony put out this stupid "game sharing" video to mock Microsoft, and it can't even do true backward compatibility this generation.
