A cartload of Minecraft: Story Mode episode 4 screenshots

Vacation travel kept me from being able to get to the latest episode in Telltale's Minecraft: Story Mode right away. I just finished it, and as always, I had my finger on the screenshot button the whole way through.

Maybe you can use this later on when you're looking for screenshots. That's what I'll be doing with it, anyway. I'll need some images to paste into the review, which should be on its way in the next couple days.

New Years deals: $40 Fallout 4 and $20 Dark Souls II figurine

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 02:00 PM PST

Earlier today at 1PM Eastern the Steam Winter sale ended, so if you saved up all your Christmas money and didn't find anything interesting, here are some noteworthy New Year deals we've rounded up. (So you can spend your money. See how helpful we are?)

There are a few scattered deals on the net that are warranting a gander: Fallout 4 on PC, for instance, is still 34% off at GMG - the best price we've spotted for in recent months for the Steam copy of the game.

On the console gaming side of deals there are also a few gems. At GameStop, they're selling the Dark Souls II Warrior Knight figurine for only $20 (aka the Dark Souls II Collector's Edition). Previously retailing at $120, it looks like GameStop overstocked Xbox 360 versions because they're pricing these to move. The deal is online only.

In similar vein, the South Park: Stick of Truth Grand Wizard Edition for the 360 and PS3 are also on sale at $27.97. This collector's edition comes with a Grand Wizard Cartman figure, which is pretty neat chunk of plastic in exchange for your hard earn Christmas dollars. Since this is over $24.99, you can use coupon SAVER to get free shipping.

Comments of the Week: We made it!

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

Why do I hear explosions!? Did the cops find my highly illegal brothel and are bombarding the place? YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!

Oh, wait, were those just fireworks? Eh, it's an honest mistake. Still, I wonder why people are firing them all of a sudden... Is it because today's the 50th week of Comments of the Week? Why, it must be! After all, it isn't like it's New Years or anything!

That's right! There are officially 50 weeks-worth of the revived community showcase, Comments of the Week, and it's all thanks to the fine folks over at Destructoid! Seriously, give yourselves a hand. I couldn't have done it without YOU.

Well, I COULD, but then that would make me seem like a narcissist. After all, this is where I go out and find all the best comments that's been said over the week so community members who can't be everywhere at once — lazy ass bums! — can all get together and laugh at each other behind their backs! As always, comments are compiled and categorized into three separate sections:

TRUTH: In Stonehaven, Scotland, people celebrate New Years by parading the streets with giant balls of fire.

LOL: I'm not talking about their testicles!

WUT?: But ladies, feel free to talk about mine! :P

Anyway, if you missed last week's Comments of the Week, where I lament the fact that Santa is going to be gone for another year, then check out my unbridled rage right here!

Die Bart, Die: Every Legend of Zelda death animation

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 11:30 AM PST

I'm sure you've seen a lot of dead Links in your day, but have you seen every single one compiled in a neat one video package? Because that's exactly what YouTube's "Master0fHyrule" is offering, above.

Good lord, the drowning animations are grim. I've always considered drowning up there on the bad ways to die list (but if you're trying to kill me, note that the worst way to die would be in old age after being given tons of money for free).

Fallout 4 finally playable thanks to Macho Man mod

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 11:00 AM PST

Fallout 4 has been out since early November and it's been nigh unplayable in the last two months thanks to a distinct lack of Macho Man Randy Savage. While PS4 and Xbox One players are shit out of luck, modders have once again saved the day as far as the PC version of Fallout 4 is concerned with this Macho Claws mod that puts Macho Man Randy Savage back into the game.

You might remember that Bethesda's last vaunted release, Skyrim, also struggled with playability issues for months after launch. In that case, too, modders came to the rescue and added Macho Man Randy Savage into the game.

[Thanks, Kristofer!]

Watch this blind gamer beat The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 10:30 AM PST

Terry Garrett has been playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time since 2011, and five years later (with long breaks in between) he has finally managed to finish the game. Oh yeah, did I mention he's blind?

Garrett has adapted his own method of playing video games through sound recognition and lots of trial and error. He uses a two-speaker setup which helps him identify the locations of enemies and other things just by listening closely.

In the past he's played other games like Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus with exceptional skill. But of course, a huge 3D world like Ocarina of Time was going to be a massive undertaking.

In the video below, you can watch the final moments as he descends Ganon's Castle while it crumbles around him, closely following the sounds of Zelda's footsteps (and shrill screams), and as he slices and dices Ganon for the victory! More of the playthrough can be found over on his YouTube channel.

Garrett thanked his fans for all their help and support and “all those who have stuck with [him] through this series even after it seemed like [he] was giving up.” I wonder what he'll play next?

Sony is working to bring PlayStation Network back online

Having issues with PlayStation Network today? We're right there with you.

Sony has confirmed it's aware of the problems. "We are still working on resolving today's issues with PSN," tweeted SCEA's official support line. "Thanks for your continued patience."

I just tried again, a few minutes before 4:00pm Pacific, and I'm still unable to access PSN. When will it be fixed? That's unclear. But you can check back at this page to see the network's status.

It's time for Awesome Games Done Quick 2016

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 09:30 AM PST

Awesome Games Done Quick is one of my favorite yearly events, yet I always seem to miss the opening day of the marathon broadcast. The holiday break kept me in a relatively unplugged and intoxicated state, away from the live stream, but I'm back. I'm committed. Let's watch a bunch of people beat a bunch of games with impeccable speed and skill. It'll be fun, I promise!

The full schedule is up here, and it's absolutely worth consulting. You'll see a breakdown of the start time for each individual game, who is speedrunning and/or commentating, how long the run is expected to take (Splatoon in under an hour? Believe!), and what type of run it is. To catch up on anything you've missed, head to this YouTube channel for archival footage.

I have my eye on Saturday's segments. On this final full day of streaming, there will be mysterious TASBot shenanigans (always a treat), Bloodborne, Super Metroid, and Final Fantasy IV.

Last year's event brought in $1.5 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Let's top that.

Here's what Sony has up its sleeve in 2016

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST

The upbeat, warbly music in this trailer suggests that PlayStation 4 will have a good year in 2016. A banner year, even. A constant criticism of the Sony platform is that it doesn't have enough exclusive titles. Well, this video showcases what can only be found on PS4 (to some degree) over the next 12 months.

Across the 20 games, there are varying levels of sincerity with regard to "exclusive" status. The likes of Uncharted 4 and The Last Guardian will surely be found only on PlayStation 4. However, others like Street Fighter V, No Man's Sky, and Paragon are confirmed to come to PC; those are merely console exclusives, reveling in playing keep-away from Xbox One.

Here's the full list of titles PlayStation's currently touting for 2016:

Yep, Activision bought Major League Gaming

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 08:40 AM PST

As suspected, Activision has acquired Major League Gaming.

The move falls in line with the company's ambitious goal to "create the ESPN of eSports," according to CEO Bobby Kotick. "MLG's ability to create premium content and its proven broadcast technology platform -- including its live streaming capabilities -- strengthens our strategic position in competitive gaming," he said.

MLG CEO and co-founder Sundance DiGiovanni (again, great name) added, "This acquisition and Activision Blizzard's commitment to competitive gaming will expand the opportunities for gamers to be recognized and celebrated for their competitive excellence."

Today's press release also mentioned that "MLG will continue to operate MLG.tv, MLG Pro Circuit, and GameBattles platforms, and will continue to work with its partners and other publishers across the industry."

The financial details weren't disclosed, but this is believed to be a $46 million deal.

Mike Cosimano's personal picks for Game of the Year 2015

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

2015 was a divisive year -- tremendous in terms of media (TV like Master of None and The 100; movies like Spotlight and The Force Awakens; games like...well, keep reading) and a garbage year in terms of my life. Entertainment became a personal necessity, even when the experiences in question were too "heavy" to be considered traditional escapism. As a result, I dabbled in a veritable cornucopia of video games this year, sampling genres I had not touched in years.

Out of the dozens of games I played this year, these were the ten that stuck with me. The best game of the year is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, let's be clear. But my heart is with these ten. This is Mike Cosimano's favorite games of the year, damnit.

(Honorable mentions: Ori and the Blind Forest, Volume, Star Wars Battlefront, Rocket League)

Further proof confirming Platinum's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST

It's a new year, but we already have a prime candidate for "Worst Kept Secret." No one is willing to admit that Platinum's making a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game, but Platinum's totally making a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. The latest shred of evidence is just the cherry on top of the heap of damning evidence.

Achievements for an Xbox 360 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan were recently posted on Xbox Achievements. The listing also cites Platinum as the developer and Activision as the publisher -- both of which make sense. Sites like this typically data mine gaming services such as Xbox Live to make their discoveries. This is likely how the Achievement information for Platinum's TMNT was found.

Even though this game isn't even confirmed yet, this recent revelation points to a release that may be sooner than later. Typically, Achievements aren't discovered until relatively close to a title's launch. That's not always the case, but it's true far more often than not.

Given the secretive nature of this project, there's obviously no word as to what platforms it'll come to. It's unlikely that Platinum would make a game that's solely on legacy consoles. There's a good chance it'll be on current systems, but it's unknown if there are any sort of exclusivity clauses in place.

The saga of Platinum's mysterious Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title goes back to late November. That's when a listing for the game appeared on the Australian classification board. Then, last week, some art had been found that, according to the Achievements entry, looks to be the game's box art. Now, the question is less of if this is real, and more of wondering when we're going to get it.

Assassin's Creed may be taking a break this year, with an Egypt-set game coming in 2017

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST

Ever since Assassin's Creed II in 2009, Ubisoft's popular stab-'em-up series has seen at least one major release every year. 2014 even saw two games, Rogue and Unity. Critics of the series argue that this relentless release schedule is resulting in franchise fatigue and rushed games, the biggest example of which being Unity's disastrous launch.

Well if a report by Kotaku is to be believed, that trend may finally be broken as the series may be taking a break this year. It should be returning in 2017 with an Egyptian-themed game currently known as Assassin's Creed: Empire.

The report, which is based on comments made by an anonymous 4Chan poster that have been backed up by Kotaku’s anonymous sources, claims that skipping 2016 was planned ever since Unity's launch. This'll mean each game will have three years of development time, as Ubisoft already alternate development studios for the series each year.

According to the 4chan posts (and put together by NeoGAF), Empire will function as a prequel to the entire Assassin's Creed series, being set before the Assassins and Templars were even a thing. Playing as a slave or former slave, Empire may be returning to the format of the older games by featuring multiple cities with a traversable overworld, as opposed to simply one big location like in Unity and Syndicate.

Of course, all of this should be considered merely as unconfirmed rumours until it's officially announced, but Kotaku has previously leaked both Unity and Syndicate, so I believe they're pretty trustworthy for this.

Even if there isn't a main-series game this year, Assassin's Creed is going to be very busy with the release of two Chronicles games (India in January, Russia in February) and a movie starring Michael Fassbender at the end of the year.

I absolutely love Assassin's Creed, and Syndicate was probably the best one yet, but having an extra year to truly polish and make Empire fantastic is a pretty exciting thought. I'm not entirely sure of the setting just yet, but it'll be nice to get away from Europe and the Americas for a change.

Keiji Inafune's ReCore is launching on PC too

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 06:30 AM PST

A big to-do was made about ReCore's reveal at E3 2015, as it seemed Keiji Inafune's next game would be an Xbox One exclusive. It turns out that's only a half-truth, as ReCore will also be available on Microsoft's Windows 10.

The reveal was made unceremoniously in a rundown of Xbox's plans for the year. Squashed right in the middle of the list is ReCore which will release in 2016 on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. While it was originally rumored to be set for early 2016, the game's now just expected to release sometime this year.

Also hazy is exactly what ReCore is about. Inafune likes robots, so there will be robots. Other than that, we recently learned that the Joseph Staten, who has written Destiny and Halo, is heading up the writing. The tale seems to be about Joule, a woman who is tasked with using robots to complete some sort of mission to revive the human race.

Expect that haze to clear up soon. We're 4/366ths through 2016 (Leap Year!), so we're well on our way to knocking out another twelve months of human existence. In those few days, we've found out that more humans will be able to try ReCore. Now we just need to know everything else about this compelling but still mysterious game.

How did Destructoid's most anticipated games of 2015 turn out?

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

While it is currently several days into 2016, I am still writing 2015 on all my checks. Rent's past due, by the way. Speaking of 2015, it was a year wherein a lot of video games came out, many of which we were dog-whose-owner-is-returning-from-getting-the-mail excited to play. We talked about them here, a year ago.

It was all promise, and exciting. Not even new romance, but the threat of it.

And then 2015 raged on like the festering wound that it was and many of us had to face reality. Many of us, however, picked games that didn't end up coming out in 2015, leaving us a bit longer strapped to fantasy that's safer than a released product with its jagged edges and unflattering lighting and forehead wrinkles, even if we might end up loving it in spite of all that.

Well, Rise of the Tomb Raider hit 1 million sold, at least

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 05:30 AM PST

What notable exclusives graced the PlayStation 4 and Wii U over the past two months? Xenoblade Chronicles and...? With help from the Uncharted 4 delay and brief Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusivity, the Xbox One had the strongest exclusive holiday lineup (aforementioned Tomb Raider and Halo 5).

But, did that mean anything? December sales data is not available yet, but Microsoft boasted today that, "every title in our exclusive 2015 holiday games line-up -- Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Forza Motorsport 6 and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition -- sold over 1 million units." Ok, well, if we're reaching back to September (Forza) and August (Gears), then the Xbox One "exclusive 2015 holiday games line-up" doesn't look that much better than the competition (add Yoshi's Woolly World, Super Mario Maker, Uncharted Collection, Disgaea 5). Also, 1 million? Since when is that considered good? (More context: Sony was happy with Bloodborne at 2 million, SEGA disappointed with Alien: Isolation at 2 million.)

But, ok, refocus. Rise of the Tomb Raider then has at least hit a million. That's up from the 330,000 week-one figure floating around (less than 63K in the UK). Despite coming out November 10, it wasn't even in the top 10 (US retail) selling games of November.

On the other hand, Halo 5 is best-selling in the series, led October sales despite releasing on the 27th, and still hit the 8 spot for November. So it's weird that Microsoft would temper its reporting of Halo's success by lumping it in with the lowest common denominator, sales-wise, unless all three of the other mentioned games barely scraped above a million, too. It's like doing a buy-one-get-one-free with a $100 item and a $1 item. I mean, Metal Gear moved 5 million units in the two months leading up to Halo 5's release, so noting that Halo 5 sold 1 million over the same span isn't too impressive.

Pokemon on PlayStation? With hacks, anything is possible!

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

Hacking group "Fail0verflow" -- the same group that hacked the PS3 five years ago -- has taken advantage of an exploit in the PlayStation 4 to start messing about under its knickers, which is to say I myself know little about hacking and its parlance, but a lot about doing sex stuff.

The group got a custom version of Linux running on the console and has released it publicly. It's here if you're interested. You can see it in action in the above video, showed off last week at the 32nd Chaos Communication Conference. The hacking bit is a cartoonish donut icon and the Pokemon Emerald -- or, "Pokemon PlayStation Version" -- starts at about 4:20.

Shenmue III's website just got a makeover

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 04:30 AM PST

Shenmue III might still be set for December 2017, but that hasn't stopped developer YS Net from updating us every month or so, and this time, it has modified the official website. The project seems to be rather slow-going, but it's making progress, as evidenced by the newest video below, showing off an area called "Bailu Village Hut."

As I've said before, I'm pretty careful with what I back in terms of crowdfunding, and I think this is something that truly can't afford to fail. The quality is of course up in the air, but I don't doubt that this will be finished at some point.

Pixelated shmup Imarisu looks beautiful, demo is out

Debuting in the new Comiket 89 trailerImarisu innocently showed up as part of the compilation. It kind of flew by me at the time, but the game's site has been updated recently to include a demo, so you can check out the awesome pixel art for yourself.

It features typical bomb, shield, and charged shot mechanics, but it plays fairly well. Hopefully the final version will get localized at some point.

This new art from Vanillaware is anything but juvenile

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 03:50 AM PST

I've been a big fan of George Kamitani's (of Vanillaware fame) work for quite some time. He's one of the most talented artists in the industry, and now, the developer has shared another work with us by way of his company's website. It's stunning, to say the least.

It's not directly related to a confirmed game though, so don't get your hopes up. But as Siliconera points out, this wouldn't be the first time that random art eventually lead to a legitimate release -- in the case of their tease for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, that became an actual project.

Classic character Tusk is in Killer Instinct Season 3

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST

Killer Instinct is bringing back another old-school character for Season 3. In addition to Kim Wu, Tusk will be joining the fray, and both fighters have been confirmed for launch. According to creative director Adam Isgreen though, Eyedol and Gargos are still up in the air, mostly due to their complex movesets and the fact that the former was a "super cheap" combatant.

As a reminder, the game is going to be exclusive to Windows 10, where it will be Cross-Buy with owners of the Xbox One original. If you already own Season 1, which is free this month for Gold members, you'll automatically get it on PC when the game launches in March.

Pre-order the Oculus Rift VR headset this week

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 03:15 AM PST

We still do not know how much the impending Oculus Rift virtual reality headset will cost or when it will be released, but we might know soon. Oculus just announced that the Rift will be open for pre-order this week, January 6, at 8AM PST.

I am assuming this means Oculus also has to reveal the date and price. Oculus founder Palmer Luckey is doing a Q&A session on reddit later that day at 6PM PST. The Rift comes with a platformer, Lucky's Tale, and pre-orders all include one of the best VR games, EVE: Valkyrie. The special Touch controllers, which aren't required to use the headset, have been delayed into the latter half of 2016.

It's nearly here: The Fire Emblem Fates US site is up

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

Fire Emblem Fates will be released on February 19, 2016 in the US, and Nintendo is ringing in the new year by gearing up for launch. The new teaser site is up, which includes some localized video and screenshots.

I have the ultimate edition pre-ordered, even though I'm pretty bummed with the way Nintendo decided to handle the whole situation. If you're going physical, the game is basically split into three different releases at launch -- and the only way to get the third part physically is to buy the collector's edition.

Game Boy themed Alien Dinosaurs coming to PC, 3DS and Wii U

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 02:30 AM PST

Although the digital era gets a lot of [mostly justified] flak, it's done a lot of good as well. Indie teams can generally whip up an awesome project or retro homage in a fraction of the development time, and put it right on Steam Greenlight -- so you can wade through all of the junk to get to it.

One such promising game is Alien Dinosaurs, which will hit 3DS, Wii U, and PC at some point this year. Based on the new trailer I'm pretty intrigued.

Childhood is a rare state of vulnerability that we only get to experience once in life -- full of bewilderment, innocence, and most of all an uncertainty of the unknown. Among the Sleep takes us back to this state, providing a unique lens to the horror adventure genre that takes us a step back to a time when life was quite unknown and scary.

In this tale you play a toddler in search of his missing mother, traversing through various nightmarish worlds to find and recapture heartfelt memories in hopes of making it back to her safely.

Sadness: This abandoned Hudson studio still has a miniature train you can ride

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST

Sigh.

Hudson Soft was a huge part of my childhood. Games like Adventure Island were staples in my household, and hundreds of hours were spent playing Bomberman with just about every single one of my friends. Sadly, in March of 2012, Hudson and its headquarters were closed down, to be merged with Konami -- so the publisher could basically make some cash off of merchandise.

Hardcore Gaming 101 recently had the chance to visit the abandoned studio recently in Sapporo Japan, and although they weren't able to go inside, they did see the remnants of the train track, featuring a miniature train that employees could ride.

Platinum Games' Scalebound has been delayed into 2017

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 12:30 AM PST

Trumpeting in one of the worst bits of news this year, Platinum Games has announced that Scalebound is no longer going to make its target of 2016. Development is apparently "going well," but the studio notes that this is one of the "biggest games" it has ever created, and as such it'll need more time.

Platinum has always taken its time with original projects, and the quality really shows. Also, the fact that it seemingly has a TMNT game on its hands complicates things even further, I'm sure.

Namco Bandai shares new details for Tales of Berseria

Posted: 04 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST

Tales of Berseria is still a ways off (it doesn't even have a release date in Japan yet, though a localization has been confirmed), but that hasn't stopped Namco Bandai from sharing some new information. Apparently the theme will be "emotion and reason," as the story centralizes around Velvet, who comes across people who only act on reason, abandoning the concept of emotion. It'll also center around a disease called "Goma," which morphs humans into monsters -- strangely, Velvet's left hand can transform into an inhuman appendage, which will probably work into the Goma concept at some point.

It will debut with the Linear Motion Battle System (LMBS), which features free-running, and Artes, which are abilities mapped to each face button -- they've altered this from past setups, so the player can use the left stick entirely for movement, and two additional face buttons for Artes (sounds good).

Tencent wants to work with Capcom on more than just Monster Hunter Online, cites Dino Crisis

Posted: 03 Jan 2016 11:15 PM PST

Right now, China's powerhouse holding company Tenent (who just bought League of Legends) is working with Capcom on Monster Hunter Online, but more may be in the pipeline. According to the game's producer, he's interested in specifically working with Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Dino Crisis, and Sengoku Basara.

A few of those are usual suspects, but Dino Crisis in particular is very interesting, because it's currently a defunct property (Onimusha kind of is too, but Onimusha Souls exists). Talks are evidently going on right now, and Monster Hunter Online will be updated on a monthly basis -- in addition to a possible Monster Hunter concert project.

Recent Star Wars games generate over $1 billion in sales

Posted: 03 Jan 2016 08:00 PM PST

Star Wars Battlefront is thought to have sold six million units since its launch in November 2015.

In an interview to Fortune, analysts estimated how recent Star Wars releases are performing, including Battlefront and Disney Infinity.

Michael Pachter from Wedbush pegs Battlefront at 6 million units sold in November 2015, with another 6 million shifted in December 2015, amassing $660 million based on the average retail price ($55). Pacific Crest’s Evan Wilson said sales may be as high as 13 million, but as many savvy gamers waited for Black Friday and holiday sales, these discounts would be reflected in revenue.
