Ys VIII screenshots? Ys please!

Nihon Falcom recently opened up an official website for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, the next entry in the studio's brilliant action RPG series, and with it comes new information and pretty pictures.

This particular adventure sees protagonist Adol Christin get swept off a ship once again (this time thanks to a sea monster) and wash up on a beach with some of his fellow passengers. There, the castaways set up camp on this cursed isle, where Christin dreams of a blue-haired girl (pictured in the gallery below) and sets out to explore the land and its mysterious ancient ruins.

Falcom plans to release Ys VIII for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita this summer in Japan. As of yet, a localization hasn't been announced, but I'm sure the folks at XSEED Games are eager to work on this one, given how many Falcom games they've published over the past few years.

Mistwalker shares concept art for unannounced project

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 01:15 PM PST

Last week, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi gave a master class presentation at the University of Hawaii's West Oahu campus as part of a series of talks aimed to increase students' understanding of the business of content creation. During the session, Sakaguchi showed off new concept art from an unannounced title currently in development at Mistwalker.

According to a Twitter user (VoltySquirrel) attending the event, Sakaguchi didn't say much about the upcoming project other than it will probably wind up on a current generation console and might be revealed in about a year. The art itself comes from Kimihiko Fujisaka (Drakengard, The Last Story, Terra Battle) and the desire is for the game to emulate its sketchy look in 3D.

Earlier this month, Mistwalker started recruiting for new projects, following the release of Terra Battle in October 2014. Speaking with Destructoid prior to the mobile RPG's release that year, Sakaguchi expressed an interest in making a developing a game about ballerinas, but this looks a little more like what we'd typically associate with the man's body of work.

Perhaps this concept art has something to do with the console game set in the Terra Battle universe Mistwalker promised to make if the game surpassed 2 million downloads (which it did last April).

So Chandelure actually looks pretty badass in Pokken Tournament

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST

I stopped buying Pokémon games about when Chandelure entered the universe, so honestly I didn't know what to expect from the fighting light fixture. I definitely didn't plan on seeing it beat the shit out of Pikachu Libre with a freaking laser beam. Chandelure might be the last Pokémon you'd expect to see in Pokkén, but it definitely can hold its own against fighters like Gardevoir and Shadow Mewtwo. Chandelure completes Pokkén's roster of 16 Pokémon, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Bidoof DLC sometime down the line.

I find myself caring more and more about this game every time a trailer is released. Pokkén Tournament is exactly like what I wanted Pokémon Stadium to be way back when when I was young and naive. I can't just turn my back on something this childhood pleasing.

Here's what to expect from Destiny's Crimson Days event

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

Well my Valentine's Day plans are set. Bungie has revealed more about Destiny's upcoming Crimson Days event, including a list of themed loot and more info about the limited run Crucible mode, Crimson Doubles.

Crimson Doubles pits two pairs of guardians against each other in elimination style combat. The first couple to defeat their opposition five times wins the match. Whenever a partner is killed, the surviving guardian is empowered with the 'Broken Heart' buff and has maxed out armor, agility, recovery, and weapon handling until they either die or their companion is revived. There's no matchmaking for partners during the event, so players will have to form fireteams on their own if they want to participate.

Popping Cherries: Final Fantasy VII

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST

Nobody has time to play every video game. We all have classic games that have slipped us by for whatever reason, be it time constraints, money issues, initial lack of interest, or any number of other things. But that just means it's still possible to experience a great game for the very first time, and that fresh perspective on a classic can be just as enlightening as the opinions of those who are more than familiar with the game already.

This month, CJ Andriessen finally played Final Fantasy VII for the first time ever. As it's one of my favorite games, and something I've played many times in the past, the two of us sat down to chat about our experiences both as a newcomer and as a veteran ex-SOLDIER.

Create your own '80s anime adventure in Starr Mazer

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

I used to skip Sunday school every weekend I could to watch poorly localized episodes of Tekkaman and Robotech and hang out in my pajamas. I loved them, but even at the time something seemed off about them, stilted dialog and confusing transitions between scenes hinted at something lost in translation. I was maybe 10 years old and ballsy enough to think I could do a better job re-writing the series for North American audiences. Now it looks like my hubris has finally caught up with me, Starr Mazer is giving armchair directors everywhere a chance to script their own '80s space anime.

Unveiled in a spiffy January update video below, Mazer Maker is Imagos Software's custom editing tool for manipulating Starr Mazer. For a forward facing editing tool, it looks surprisingly robust with all sorts of options for dialog triggers, animation settings, and unique scripting situations. Guess it's finally time for me to put up or shut up and write that space opera after all.

Imagos also shows off a sort of roguelike SHUMP called Starr Mazer: DSP in the video. I'm not sure I fully see the appeal of a randomized SHUMP (isn't the whole point of a good SHUMP to be able to memorize everything and 1-credit clear it?) but the promise of a synthed-out retro soundtrack by Alex Mauer makes me want to play it all the same.

Dine in style with Even the Ocean and Anodyne creators Joni and Sean

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 05:15 AM PST

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on YouTube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

[Update: Show's over! Thanks to Joni and Sean for being on the show, and for letting me yell at them about how The Witness reminds me of The Fountainhead for so long. The rerun should be up soon, but in the meantime, here's a trailer for Even the Ocean!]

Today on Sup Holmes we're happy to welcome Joni Kittaka and Sean Hogan to the program. Sean and Joni are probably most well known for creating Anodyne, a 16-bit style Zelda-like that's much more than it appears to be at first glance. Their next project, Even the Ocean, is also reminiscent of something from the Genesis days, but this time their taking on the 2D action platformer genre. While the game may look straight forward at first, the two devs are planning multiple ways to change up classic platformer design elements while infusing them with themes related to the game's story, like alignment-effected jumping mechanics seen above.

We'll be talking to Joni and Sean about that, where they think it takes for an indie 2D platformer to succeed in 2016, and a lot more. Join us at 2:30pm EST for live talk and questions!

Squid Sisters perform live, are rumored to get their own amiibo

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

Splatoon's regular roll-out of free weapon and stage updates has come to an end, but fan fever for the budding franchise is as hot as ever. A recent Splatoon event in Japan drew huge crowds, sporting real life replicas of Splatoon weaponry, a spawn point area for photo posing, and even a full-on Squid Sisters live show. The two fictional idols managed to take the concept of imaginary performances to a new level, appearing in hologram form and singing in a completely nonsensical Inkling "language" to an adoring, actual flesh-and-blood crowd.

This would have been a perfect time for the sisters to announce that they've got their own amiibo in the works, but for whatever reason, they passed on the opportunity. Still, it's looking like the two Inkling idols will inevitably get their own NFC-infused figurines. Dataminers have discovered files for "AmiiboIdolA" and "AmiiboIdolB" in the game's code, indicating that fake plastic Marie and Callie may be making their way to stores sometime in 2016.

The way we're headed, it won't be long until portable singing hologram amiibo will have replaced videogames as the dominant form of modern interactive entertainment.

Adventures of Mana drops February 4

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST

Square Enix's Adventures of Mana is launching worldwide for iOS and Android on February 4, the company has announced. And because we can't have nice things, a PlayStation Vita version will be available the same day, but only in Japan. Hope you don't mind playing on mobile!

A game of many names, Adventures of Mana is a remake of Game Boy action RPG Final Fantasy Adventure (also known as Mystic Quest in Europe -- no, not Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest), which has actually been remade once before as Sword of Mana for the Game Boy Advance.

Umihara Kawase will return to Steam soon

Posted: 31 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST

Umihara Kawase will "hopefully" return to Steam "this week," Degica told Destructoid today.

In case you're wondering why it's making a comeback, the platformer trilogy was delisted from Valve's storefront in December following the demise of its developer, Agatsuma Entertainment.

Since then, Degica, publisher of fine things like Crimzon Clover and RPG Maker, has acquired the rights to Umihara Kawase, and last week revealed plans to reinstate the games on January 28.

Unfortunately, that hasn't happened just yet. Degica missed its planned release on Thursday, leaving us to prompt the publisher and ask what happened. According to a representative for the company, "Transferring ownership rights from one developer to another is not as simple a process as we expected from Steam. A mixture of technical oddities and legal paperwork slowed it down."

Whenever Umihara Kawase does come back, Degica says "former owners will once again be able to download the game without purchasing it a second time," as the company believes "it is important to support the digital ownership rights of players to the fullest reasonable extent."

In case you're chomping at the bit to find out when you're going to find out when Final Fantasy XV is coming out, well then chomp no further. Square Enix is hosting an event on March 30 in Los Angeles, where the publisher plans to announce a release date (and many more things apparently).

If you happen to be in the area, you can reserve a free ticket to attend the event right here.

The Witness is already almost outselling Braid's entire first year

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

After being in development since what feels like the dawn of humanity, Jonathan Blow’s The Witness is doing pretty dang well for itself. Not only did it get almost universal critical praise (nabbing a 10/10 in Destructoid’s review), it’s also apparently selling spectacularly.

In tweets made by Blow, he announced that The Witness is on track to do better in its first week on all available platforms than Braid did in an entire year.

It’s looking like his next game, due to be released sometime between now and the inevitable heat death of the universe, is well on its way to being funded:

I’m genuinely surprised by this. An indie puzzle game released at a relatively high price point, and as a result is also being pirated to hell and back, is still managing to outsell Braid, one of the games that was credited with starting the great ‘indie boom’ a few years ago.

Just goes to show how having the means to fund development, as well as owning a massive bottle to piss in, can pay off in the long run.

Madden NFL 16 is heading to EA Access on February 2

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST

EA has announced that a new game to be added to their EA Access subscription service on Xbox One on February 2: Madden NFL 16. Please, control yourself. No need to get that excited.

In his review, Steven wasn’t entirely impressed by it.  While it apparently makes some much-needed improvements over the previous games, it’s plagued by slow menus, lengthy load times and plenty of microtransactions.

The addition of Madden 16 means that one fifth of all the games on EA Access are American football (three out of 15), and more than half of the titles on offer are sports games (eight out of 15). Sports games have massive amounts of more casual players, so it’s pretty obvious who the target audience for EA Access is. Still, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

For $5 a month, that’s a lot of American football. And with it, a lot of big, burly, American football players all climbing over each other in tight clothes… trying desperately to grab the ball and score… and then heading off to the locker room to…

I need to play more Madden.
