Ubisoft and EA clash over 'Ghost' trademark

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

Publishers Ubisoft and Electronic Arts are primed to go to war over the word "ghost."

The former filed a Notice of Opposition with the United States Patent and Trademark Office this Friday, disputing a pair of trademark applications EA filed for the spooky term last March.

The French company argues EA's trademarks will "cause confusion" with its Ghost Recon series, contending that "consumers are likely to believe, mistakenly, that the goods and services [EA] offers under [its trademark filing] are provided, sponsored, endorsed, or approved by [Ubisoft], or are in some way affiliated, connected, or associated with [Ubisoft], all to the detriment of [Ubisoft].

While that argument might hold water if EA were attempting to use the name to compete with or cash in on Ubisoft's Tom Clancy shooter franchise, that doesn't appear to be the case.

EA seems to be filing the mark for its subsidiary Ghost Games, the Sweden-based studio known for developing racing games like Need for Speed: Rivals and last year's Need for Speed reboot.

In any event, Ubisoft is asking the USPTO to refuse EA's applications, and has given EA until March 29 to respond to its notice before potential court proceedings begin on April 8.

There are a lot of dangers out there on the road and a lot of things to keep in mind if you're going to carry cargo across state lines in the United States of America. I mean, they don't force drivers to take CDL tests for nothing!

So, being the helpful guy I am, I've decided to lay out some very important tips and tricks for anyone looking to perform well in American Truck Simulator.

Quiet will be playable in Metal Gear Online

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST

Boy, Metal Gear Online. I sure forget about that in a hurry.

Those of you who have stuck with The Phantom Pain's multiplayer suite and plan to continue doing so might be pleased to know that more content is coming in March 2016. Konami has previewed the next major batch of DLC, which includes three maps, some "Appeal Action" packs, and Quiet as a unique playable character (similar to the currently available Venom Snake and Ocelot).

We don't know the price yet (there's got to be a price, right?) but more details are coming Monday.

New Vita update physically attacks anyone who tries to play with it (Fauxclusive)

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST

In its continuing efforts to convince fans to finally let go of the PlayStation Vita, Sony released an update for the device earlier this week that caused a wide variety of problems, including making it nearly impossible to connect to the PlayStation Store and rapidly draining the battery. With many people still plugging away at the system, Sony released a new update this morning that will physically assault anyone who tries to play with the handheld.

Update 3.58 introduces a host of new anti-gaming measures aimed at getting people to just throw their Vita away. When you download the new update, all of your saved data is instantly deleted and the screen goes black with the exception of giant middle finger pointed directly at you. If you try to move on past that screen, the buttons on the system will begin to electrocute you.

Horror movie characters I want to see in MKX

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

When NetherRealm announced it was going to put Freddy Krueger in Mortal Kombat, I thought it was a cheap cash in. And, as much as I hate to admit it, I also thought it was the coolest thing ever. I don't consider myself a huge horror guy, but I do have a certain affection for cheesy movie icons from the '80s. When the studio continued the tradition in Mortal Kombat X with Jason and Predator (and a cameo from Carl Weathers by way of a costume for Jax) I couldn't have been happier. The recent announcements of Leatherface and Alien's Xenomorph was an absolute delight.

But now NetherRealm has a problem. If it wants to keep MKX going with more Kombat Packs, it's going to need more guest characters from the horror movie world to toss in there. But, it's already picked off all the low-hanging fruit, the big obvious names like Krueger, Jason, and the Alien. If NeatherRealm ever decides to do a third Kombat Pack, it's going to need to get creative with its picks. Fortunately, I have a few suggestions.

Watch Killer Instinct's Kim Wu in action

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST

Our prior coverage of Killer Instinct has been repeatedly met with comments expressing love and affection for Kim Wu. Well, y'all, today's the day. We're getting our first full look at the martial artist with a "friggin' dragon." She's going to join the roster in the game's upcoming third season.

Iron Galaxy Studios also posted its tentative patch notes for the new season. Given all the bare-minimum rebalancing that needs to happen as fresh fighters enter the fray, there is a lot to chew on. But keep in mind, this stuff isn't finalized yet -- and that assuredly goes for Kim Wu's design as well if past Killer Instinct character reveal trailers are any indication.

While reading the patch notes, the studio advises not to "think about a change you see and how it would act against a [Season 2] character, as that will tell you the wrong story. Take it all in, try not to panic, you'll be playing it very soon and we look forward to your feedback."

Street Fighter V trailer shows off new modes and training options

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST

If there is one thing you can say about the Street Fighter series, it knows how to make attractive trailers out of boring info. I've enjoyed watching slickly produced videos about training mode options and network settings since SFIV and SFxT and it looks like SFV has had no problem picking up the torch.

The video below details a few of SFV's new modes and options, some of which we've already heard about and some neat surprises. The series is finally getting a decent tutorial to try and bring new players up to speed, essential as fighting games become increasingly Byzantine and competitive. Speaking of training, the practice mode is being fleshed out with the ability to practice while in queue for an online match (something I'm excited about after spending so much time listening to the menu music while waiting for matches in SFIV) and with some new quality of life options. Much like Guilty Gear and MKX, you can now set the training mode up to instantly reset the character's position to the corner to easily practice your big damage combos and set-ups.

New Ghostbusters game reportedly in the works, I hope we get to be the ladies

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 06:30 AM PST

2009's Ghostbusters: The Video Game was a pleasant return to the ghoul-infested New York City, and it sounds like we'll have another chance to get bustin' this year. What remains unclear is whether it'll feature the cast of women in the upcoming 2016 movie.

In a report on Retail Merchandiser via IGN, Mark Caplan, senior vice president of Sony’s Global Consumer Products, mentions that "The positive reception to 2009’s 'Ghostbusters: The Video Game,' voiced by the original cast and featuring a story written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, renewed Sony’s interest in the property." In addition to the recent tie-in content in Lego Dimensions, a new "new full-fledged Ghostbusters video game from Activision will release alongside the movie on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4."

I hope it's the new cast. As much as I enjoyed hearing the original cast in 2009, I'd be excited to hear Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon trade sarcastic quips as they avoid crossing the streams.

The Silent Hill Retrospective: Homecoming

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

Homecoming was the Hollywood take on Silent Hill. All crisp and clean, with a Jensen Ackles-type in the lead, and a straightforward plot that paid more homage to Dean Koontz’s Phantoms than Koji Suzuki’s Dark Water. What was once opaque and foreign was now transparent and insular. Homecoming didn’t have much to say as a game or a story, nor about the series itself. But it did, as product, tell us how companies like Konami were struggling to compete with big-money marketing of its Western competitors.

Silent Hill was popular, but hardly a blockbuster franchise. They needed to be smart for the HD generation. Outsourcing and middleware took care of rising developmental costs, while other companies would foot the bill for brand awareness. Movies and comics were the licensing answer, and looking back on 2008 and how rushed it was, Homecoming now comes across as an afterthought in its own major push.

Still, giving oneself wholly over to another market or another gaze doesn’t necessarily make for a terrible game. In Homecoming’s case, maybe its problems lay in the fact that all the best stories had already been told.

Disney will not allow EA to break canon with Star Wars Battlefront

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 04:30 AM PST

While we've known since last month that Star Wars Battlefront is going to focus on the original trilogy for this release in the series, we didn't know exactly why. An EA earnings call (via VideoGamer) has shed some light on why you won't be able to make Finn and Poe kiss play as Finn, Rey, Kylo Ren, and BB-8 until the next game.

Since The Force Awakens is set three decades after the original trilogy, EA is not allowed to intermingle content from that newest film with the ideas and concepts from episodes IV-VI. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen, during the call: "On Star Wars, the one thing that we are adhering to, and I think this is part of our arrangement with Lucas and Disney, is you can't make a game in Star Wars that violates the canon of Star Wars." That makes sense to me, but it wouldn't exactly be wearing a tinfoil hat to believe that "more games=more money" was a major factor here.

Of course, when the next game comes out in a couple of years, I'm sure we'll all be rocking our First Order uniforms and battling on Death Star 3.0. Until then, we have more levels from the original trilogy coming, like Bespin Cloud City and the first Death Star.

Cheap XCOM 2 & Rise of Tomb Raider in Weekend Deals

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST

Oh, you thought you saved humanity when you beat XCOM: Enemy Unknown? Nope! XCOM 2 says you didn't (or at least that humanity surrendered at some point). Come next week Friday we'll all be forced to reverse the fortunes of Earth we thought we set right back in 2012. Exciting and spicy. (Insert gif of guy with speedy tongue.)

While not as cheap as the surprise sale last week, you can still get 23 percent off XCOM 2 in GMG's VIP section. Just login or create an account on this page. The same percentage discount applies on the Deluxe Edition, which includes the $20 Season Pass ($20 says there's going to be an expansion later).

Another PC game making the discount round this week is Rise of the Tomb Raider. You can get a giant 34 percent off at GMG by stacking  its 27 percent off code for Rise of the Tomb Raider. The 10 percent off release day discount has got people talking though, and Square Enix had to address it, essentially billing the released game as "different" since it's a "Day One Edition." Sureee.

We've seen PlayStation 4 and Xbox One bundle discounts a few times on eBay this 2016, so now it's the Wii U's turn to get a post-holiday price break. This time NewEgg is using its eBay store to sell the Wii U Mario Kart 8 bundles for $259.99, an easy peasy $40 off.

PS Vita JRPG Stranger of Sword City delayed

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST

Stranger of Sword City's PlayStation Vita release is being pushed back a month.

Initially planned for a late March debut, the portable dungeon crawler is now expected to arrive in North America on April 26. A European launch will then take place shortly thereafter on April 29.

The Xbox One version (self-published by developer Experience Inc.) still seems to be on track for its March 22 delivery, as the delay only has been announced on NIS America's end.

While no reason was given for the delay, maybe it has something to do with the potential PC version NIS America submitted to the ESRB for classification, but has yet to officially announce.

Obscure Video Games: Top 5 Bosses of Ninja Baseball Bat Man

Posted: 30 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST

Ninja Baseball Bat Man is not a baseball game. It also has nothing to do with Batman. It's actually a wacky arcade beat-'em-up released in 1993 by Irem (maker of R-Type). You might assume it's just another example of Japanese weirdness. However, while the game was developed in Japan, the original concept came from Irem's U.S. National Sales Manager Drew Maniscalco.

As is typical of the beat-'em-up genre, there isn't much plot here. The "Commissioner of Baseball" has asked a team of ninjas to rescue a bunch of stolen baseball artifacts. You and up to three friends play as the ninjas, armed with baseball bats and an array of special moves. There's no need for strategy or thinking, though. Just hit stuff with your bat until it dies. The best part of the game is the boss characters, so here are five of my favorites.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is out now across Europe

Posted: 29 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

A month after its North American release in December, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is now available across Europe, courtesy of NIS America.

I haven't had a chance to crack open my copy just yet, but it's definitely on my to-do list. After enjoying some brief hands-on time with the game pre-release -- and, really, just about everything Nihon Falcom has ever made -- I'm pretty eager to delve into this one as soon as possible.
