Halo, Destiny writer is penning Inafune's Xbox One exclusive ReCore Posted: 03 Jan 2016 03:35 PM PST Mega Man co-creator and crowdfunding enthusiast Keiji Inafune is the most prominent name attached to upcoming Xbox One exclusive ReCore, but the game is being written by former Bungie man Jospeh Staten, The New York Times revealed in a recent piece about heroines in games. ReCore follows the exploits of Joule, the last remaining person on the desert planet Far Eden, who must employ the help of robots to support her on a mission to revive the human race. "The male gender does not have the monopoly on heroism," Staten told The Times. "Joule is emblematic of this conviction, and we hope she's a character who stands strong and stands out in a market filled with male heroes." Prior to now Staten was known to be working at Microsoft Studios on an unknown project since leaving Bungie in late 2013. While at Bungie, Staten served as the studio's director of cinematics, helped manage the Halo franchise's expanded universe and novelizations, wrote Halo 3: ODST, and worked on Destiny as lead writer and design director. ReCore is in development at Comcept and Armature Studios and planned for a spring 2016 launch. Lara Croft has-company: More female heroes appear in big-budget games [NYT via GameSpot]

Chris Carter's personal picks for Game of the Year 2015 Posted: 03 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST As I've said in the past, every year is a great year for gaming if you look hard enough. I see "this year sucked" so many times around the web and just can't relate, because while there may be disappointing releases on a constant basis, there's plenty of gems being created as well. 2015, like so many years before it, was very good to me. As a note, there are no numbers on this list, as I generally don't like ranking games in order -- they were all great in their own way.
Posted: 03 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST Here at Destructoid, we don't often review games originally released well over a year ago, but we are making a special exception for Freedom Planet. With a sequel just announced, I discovered we never reviewed the original, one of the best Sonic the Hedgehog-esque games I've played in years. Yiff out in the night with your fellow furries and prepare to go fast.
Community Replay: Final Fantasy VII Posted: 03 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST Welcome to Community Replay! For a while now, I've wanted to open up a community "book club" of sorts that could also act as a companion or alternative to "Bloggers Wanted," but one that goes in the opposite direction. Instead of offering up a specific topic that can be applied to a broad selection of games, this prompt will be about a specific game. The topics discussed regarding that game are entirely up to you, community bloggers. You can talk about they gameplay mechanics, music, story, characters, lore, a game's impact on you or you can even write about how much you don't like the chosen game. Anything goes. Additionally, at the end of this and future prompts, a selection of games can be voted on for the next month's prompt. The selection of games voted on will vary by themes chosen by our community team and I figured we'd turn to recent additions to the Smash Bros. roster to get the ball rolling.
Sup Holmes rings in the new year with Fara and INK creator Zack Bell Posted: 03 Jan 2016 05:15 AM PST [Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on YouTube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.] [Update: Thanks for watching everyone! Rerun should be up soon. In the meantime, here's popular Youtube man Markiplier playing INK by Zack Bell games. He is unhappy.] It's time for the first Sup Holmes of 2016, and what better way to kick off another 12 months of being alive than with Zack Bell, creator of the critically acclaimed, color-splatter platformer INK and upcoming top-down action adventure title Fara & the Eye of Darkness. It's got really good warthogs, among other things. We'll be talking to Zack about the ins and outs of game development, managing inspiration versus realistic expectations regarding what he's able to make, his thoughts on the idea that marketing can sometimes backfire on a game, and a lot more. Tune in at 2:30pm EST for the whole bonanza.
| Crush 40 let slip a 25th anniversary Sonic game is in the works Posted: 03 Jan 2016 04:30 AM PST Jeez, it’s already been almost five years since the great Sonic Generations was released to celebrate the Blue Blur’s 20th anniversary. With the series’ 25th birthday rapidly approaching later this year, people have been wondering as to how Sega is planning on celebrating it. Well according to musician Johnny Gioeli, a member of prolific Sonic musical contributor Crush 40, we might be seeing a new special game launch this year. In a now-deleted Facebook post caught by TSSZ, Gioeli teased that Crush 40 is working on new songs for an “anniversary game:”
As the post is now deleted, it’s a good sign that what he was saying is indeed true. Of course, we currently have no idea as to what form this new project will take. However, I have a bad feeling it’s just going to be a special edition of free-to-play mobile game Sonic Dash or something as equally anticlimactic. Sonic Generations had an extensive publicity campaign before its release, so us not yet hearing anything about this new game makes me think Sega aren’t planning to do as much as they did back then. Either way, I’m interested to see what Sega has planned. I’ve always been a huge fan of Sonic, but even I have to admit the last few years haven’t been great. Having a new, decent game would be a really nice way to celebrate Sonic being around for a quarter of a century. At least we know that the music will be great if Crush 40 is involved. Even if you don't know the band, chances are you recognize some of their more popular Sonic songs, such as Live and Learn, What I'm Made Of and Sonic Heroes.
