New PVP modes and the Sharpshooter perk are coming to Killing Floor 2

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 03:00 PM PST

Earlier today, Tripwire Interactive hosted its first livestream on Twitch. After a rough start due to tech issues (changing audio levels, extremely dark camera feed), the team announced upcoming plans and answered player questions.

A bug patch was released today that was supposed to bring mod support, but that's not quite ready yet. To drum up excitement for mod potential, the developers showed off a few new game modes: Boss Rush, Pop the Cyst, Invisi-Splat, and Competitive.

In Boss Rush, instead of fighting multiple bosses like one would assume due to established gaming vernacular, one player plays as the Patriarch and fights against the others, who all start with 10,000 dosh and can use the trader at all times. In Pop the Cyst, one person plays as a cyst and must survive as long as they can as while the other players, using only a knife and welder, have to kill them. Amusingly, cysts can throw up their arms in terror whenever you want. Invisi-Splat sees one person playing as a buffed-up stalker and trying to kill the others, who are regular mercenaries. Competitive sees two teams of three trying to compete for kills. You can't directly attack the opposing team, but you can use lures to try to send more Zeds after them.

I think I want to play American Truck Simulator as Jack Burton

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 02:30 PM PST

American Truck Simulator is out on Steam next week, and we have Patrick on point for the review. That's all well and good. But lately, he's been coming into our staff chat with what I have decided must be hip trucker lingo, and I just can't get it out of my head. I need all the mental space I can muster to untangle these dang puzzles in The Witness, Patrick!

When I saw the launch trailer tonight, it dawned on me that I kind of want to play this game despite never touching any of the Europe-based truck sims, and more than that, I want to do so as ol' Jack Burton, the wise-cracking, tank-top-wearing protagonist of Big Trouble in Little China.

I'm unsure if this is a great idea or a horrible one, which means it's probably worth pursuing.

Game Developer Barbie is real and coming to a daughter near you

Like many of the staff members here at Destructoid, writing video game stories isn't my only job. When I'm not failing at being funny here or prostituting myself out to rich Saudis, I spend my days working for a toy company. While my job is, by definition, nothing but fun and games, there are certain aspects of it that I don't enjoy and all of those aspects just happen to be girls' toys.

I say this not because I'm a man but because the vast majority of girls' toys suck. Barbie, Monster High, Bratz, Ever After High, Pinkie Cooper, LEGO Friends; it's hard to get excited about selling toys that seem to just want to turn generation after generation of girls into mindless consumer whores, as if the end goal of the product is to ensure every little girl grows up to be Kim Kardashian without the ass.

Want to play that cancelled Saint's Row game? You can!

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 12:30 PM PST

Less than a week ago I reported that you could check out a few clips of Volition's cancelled Saint's Row: Undercover, a PSP game that never was. I thought it was cool that Volition even let it out the door considering how maniacally protective most studios are when it comes to protecting prototype footage and cancelled projects, But now they've done one better and released a playable ISO to the fine folks at Unseen64.

Anyone with a PSP emulator can now get a taste of Saint's Row: Undercover in all its low-poly, slightly janky glory. If you want to see what all the fuss is about, you can check out an archived stream of Volition playing the game earlier today. Good on them for doing this. I would love to see this pick up as a trend in the industry.

Fans petition Nintendo to get Danny DeVito to voice Detective Pikachu

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

Sairith Aramor has started a petition to get Nintendo of America to hire Hollywood superstar Danny DeVito to voice the English localization of the recently announced Detective Pikachu

"There are a number of us that feel as though Danny DeVito would be a prime fit for the voice acting role of the Detective Pikachu," states the petition. "We want to make this happen."

I think we can all agree that this is the most important petition to have ever been started by Nintendo fans, and perhaps of all time. As of the time of writing, it is nearing 8,000 signatures and that number increases each time I refresh the page. Nintendo hiring DeVito would surely make up for all of its changes during the localization of Fire Emblem Fates, as well as the lack of information about upcoming surefire hit Metroid Prime: Federation Force

Sign the petition. Share it. Make this viral. Vote DeVito 2016!

Wow! Breath of Fire III is headed to PSN

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 10:15 AM PST

Years ago, we ran a post about an effort to bring Breath of Fire III's PlayStation Portable version to North America. It began with the phrase "Never give up hope!" Truly words to live by. It's happening! Capcom has announced plans for a digital release of the role-playing game.

When Breath of Fire III hits PlayStation Network next month, it'll be $10 and playable across PSP, Vita, and PlayStation TV. Years of asking for the port has paid off at long last.

My attachment to the series only goes as far as liking the artwork in old gaming magazines, but I know there are a lot of fans around here -- a bunch of you sent this in to our tips line!

Let's listen to David Wise play the Battletoads theme

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 09:30 AM PST

Well, this is just lovely. If you've been enjoying Rare's behind-the-scenes videos looking back at its decades of video game development, today's upload is another treat. Longtime Rare composer David Wise talks about what it was like to make music for games like Battletoads.

"For years and years and years, it was actually quite a technical exercise before you'd even started transcribing the music to fit on the cartridges," he said.

"There's no MIDI [...] We'd have to work it out on the piano, transcribe it, type it into a subroutine on the computer, assemble it, run it, and it was quite a slow and involved process to get what was really a glorified doorbell coming back out at you."

And yet, I still cling to songs from that era. There's always room in my heart for them.

Rumor: Super Smash Bros. to be a launch title for Nintendo NX

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST

Dr. Serkan Toto, the CEO of a Tokyo-based game industry consultancy, has taken to Twitter to reveal some inside information from an unnamed source. Supposedly, Bandai Namco has several titles in development for Nintendo's upcoming hardware codenamed NX, one of which is Super Smash Bros.

Toto says he is unsure of when exactly the NX will launch, and there is no word on whether this will be a brand new game or a port of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Considering how different the 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash Bros. are, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have an NX version with its own exclusive features. Personally, I'd really like something that resembles a story mode again. You hear that, Nintendo?

I would gladly trade a Rock Band 4 set for a puppy

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

The prospect of puppies has an undeniable power. Earlier this week, professional hockey player Bobby Ryan scored a goal in a game, earning these two kids a new pup. Not to be outdone, the next day another hockey player netted three goals, which got this girl a puppy (on her birthday, no less!)

Don't underestimate the allure of puppies. Asking professional athletes to exchange performance for pets is uncertain, though. One Craigslist user is going for a more tried-and-true method: Bartering.

Much to Harmonix's dismay (probably), someone is trying to trade their PS4 guitar-bundled Rock Band 4 set for a puppy. Good moves! Why settle for a video game which is some entertainment when you could have a puppy that is all the entertainment?

There are some restrictions, though. The trade-proposer doesn't really want a chihuahua or a pug. Outside of that, everything's a green light. They "just want something cute to cuddle." That Strat just isn't adorable enough to wake up to on a cold Sunday morning.

The Witness puzzle that's vexing everyone [Update]

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST

[Update: Jonathan Blow answered our inquiry. Here's what he had to say, edited slightly to omit anything that could be the most minor of spoilers:

"Yes, I pretty much figured that one to be one of the hardest individual puzzles in the game. It was one of the early puzzles I designed, way back in 2009 even. A few puzzles in the game were sparked by ideas from other team members (for example, the pressure plate puzzles -- designed by me but the idea came from a conversation with someone) and a small fraction were designed primarily by Orsi rather than me (I did the first three puzzles [spoiler location], but she wanted to make it bigger so she designed most of the rest and I gave feedback on them)."]

The Witness is chock-full of puzzles. Hundreds upon hundreds, in fact. As you'd expect, some are easy and some are tough. More accurately, different people are finding different puzzles easy and/or tough. That's just sort of the way the human brain works, I guess. But, there's one puzzle that is absolutely giving everyone fits right now.

I reviewed The Witness, which means that I've earlier access to the game than most people. Last night, I earned the Platinum Trophy (although, I'll spare you the details of earning it, so as to not spoil anything at all). I was quite proud of this accomplishment, especially considering that I didn't have the option of using any sort of guide to nudge me along.

I was ecstatic. I wanted to tell someone, anyone. I figured that The Witness' official subreddit would be a good place to post a screenshot of the Trophy; I assumed they could appreciate it. (As an aside, I do not recommend visiting the subreddit if you have any interest in the game. They are spoiling things with reckless abandon.)

Vermintide is getting a free Last Stand mode

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 06:45 AM PST

Recent talk about multiple upcoming Games Workshop projects reminds me that I missed Fatshark's Left 4 Dead-ish take on the property, End Times - Vermintide, and need to remedy the situation before long. Some good news on that front: it's getting a survival mode called Last Stand. And it's free! Mostly.

Players will get the mode and a level that takes place in Ubersreik for free, but there will also be another level, set in the woods of Schluesselschloss, offered as paid DLC. If you talk a friend into buying it, they can invite you into a match like it's no big deal. Go on and take a free ride.

There's also a fun challenge to come up with a catchy nickname for "Schluesselschloss." I'm sure you have some ideas. If your name is good -- we're talking top 100, here -- then you'll get the DLC for free.

GOG.com has started selling early access games

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

These days, if I'm getting an email about a new PC game, chances are high it's something on Steam Early Access. Even Microsoft has embraced the sale of work-in-progress titles on Xbox One, and starting this week, you'll find in-development games on another digital storefront: GOG.com.

The site is taking a slightly different approach, as you've probably come to expect by now. It's going to choose its selection by hand, and games will come with a 14-day, no-questions-asked refund policy. As per usual with GOG.com, there won't be any DRM.

The first titles are: Starbound, Ashes of the Singularity, Project Zomboid, TerraTech, and The Curious Expedition. They're available now at a discounted rate.

"Offering a selection of the most promising titles, and those most highly requested on the Community Wishlist, is our way of avoiding bloat and ensuring that every game will be worth your time," reads today's announcement. "For those of you who prefer to wait for the final release, nothing will change."

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance hits Wii U today via Virtual Console

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 05:30 AM PST

The second game in the Final Fantasy Tactics family can now be found on the Wii U. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003, follows the journey of a boy named Marche after he and his hometown are transported to the magic-filled world of Ivalice.

Tactics Advance was one of my first Final Fantasy games, and is still my favorite of the few I've played. Despite this, I never actually managed to take down the final boss. I was underleveled for the fight, and a weird autosave stopped me from grinding out a few more levels before the battle. It was like a decade ago, but I still regret never finishing it.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance can be found on the Wii U Virtual Console for $7.99.

Ubisoft spills the beans for The Division's Season Pass

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

The Division is an Ubisoft game, so it will have DLC. Lots of it. We all assumed this, now we know -- the publisher has laid out their plans openly before its March launch.

In addition to free regular updates, there will be three paid expansions released "over the course of the year." This includes the "Underground, Survival, and Last Stand expansions. The former sounds like the most meaty with a new co-op section, Survival sounds like just that ("stay alive as long as possible") and the latter doesn't have any further information at the moment.

You'll also get an 'exclusive" sawed-off shotgun (haha thanks so much Season Pass), "exclusive" outfits and weapon skins, and "special monthly benefits." I wonder if you'll get any iconic caps or ties, too.

If you're in the beta today, I hope you have fun!

That deer game that was developed by a 16-year old is being published by Team17

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 04:30 AM PST

Anthony Tan has a lot to be happy about. In addition to gaining lots of media attention for his game Way to the Woods, partially due to his young age (he's 16), Team17 (developer of Worms, publisher of Yooka-Laylee)  has announced that they will be publishing the game.

The game is a third-person adventure involving a deer, as well as her fawn. The soundtrack is done by Jeremy Warmsley, and Woods itself is described as influenced from Studio Ghibli and will employ some elements of surrealism.

If only he was a year older -- I could have made a more clever headline!

Sunless Sea celebrates submarines with a free Steam weekend

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST

Sunless Sea is one of those games I wanted to check out last year but never got around to. I guess I should have, because it showed up on a couple of our personal game of the year lists. This weekend, I have even less of an excuse to neglect it. It's free on Steam starting right now and going through until Sunday.

This is all to promote the upcoming downloadable content, Zubmariner. The DLC takes players beneath the Unterzee, down to the depths in convertible submarine/surface vessels. The brief gameplay video released a couple days ago shows off some of the plodding dread of the ocean floor.

Funcom announces 'Conan Exiles,' with yes, that Conan

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 03:41 AM PST

Funcom has been busy! In addition to maintaining The Secret World, experimenting with games like The Park, and even dabbling into LEGO a bit, they're taking another crack at the Conan license. They've announced Conan Exiles for PC and consoles, which is coming by way of Early Access on PC "this summer," and consoles "to follow."

With Arnold's new Conan movie just finishing up the screenwriting process, it's insane to me that we'll see this big of a resurgence for the first time in over three decades (the 2011 film doesn't count).

Get your body Lady for Idolmaster: Platinum Stars' trailer

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST

It wasn't enough for Bandai Namco to merely announce that Idolm@ster: Platinum Stars was on its way to PS4 this year, oh no. No, they had to show the thing off in motion today, and I have to say it's looking quite good.

The biggest improvements appear to be in in the graphics department. It's no powerhouse, mind you, but little details like the smooth animation and extra physics on the idols' hair and clothes, the more complex and detailed stage and lighting setups, and additional expressiveness in the faces makes Platinum Stars look like an actual, native PS4 production rather than an up-rezzed PS3 title, which is the usual status quo in the anime-game world.

The trailer also shows off some of the training and rhythm gameplay, a new theme song ("Happy!"), in-engine cutscenes, and the "big event" for players and their selected idols to aim for, called the EXTREME LIVE. Not sure what's "extreme" about it, but there is definitely an obscene amount of glowsticks being waved in the audience.

Bandai Namco has also opened the game's official site, which includes some more gameplay details and stuff about the characters. I did notice that some key facts seem to be missing from the idols' profile data, like how Miki, Makoto, and Takane are the best. Hmmmm, curious.

Insomniac's new game is a metroidvania called 'Song of the Deep'

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 03:07 AM PST

Insomniac Games is taking a break from its previous work of exclusives (Sunset Overdrive on Xbox One, Rachet & Clank on PS4) to bring a brand new project to multiple platforms for $14.99 -- Song of the Deep.

It's coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One later this summer, and it's a metroidvania affair -- a stark departure from its usual catalog of 3D shooters. Tons of info is already available, including screens, and overview of the game, and a trailer. Insomniac has confirmed that it will be available physically at GameStop in the US as well.

I'm in! I might even get physical (physical).

Bravely Second shows off some new jobs, including Astrologian

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 02:30 AM PST

If Bravely Second: End Layer is simply more Bravely Default, I can deal with that. Of course it will have some new stuff to go with its story continuation, including nine new jobs. That includes Guardian, Exorcist, Wizard, Charioteer, Catmancer, Patissier, Bishop, Fencer, and Astrologian.

There are some cool sounding classes here, like Catmancer (Blue Mage, essentially), Patissier (a class that attacks by way of desserts), and the Astrologian, which buffs the party. Bravely Second will feature 30 jobs in all.

Fallout: New Vegas is getting a multiplayer mod, baby

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST

I'm glad that people are still supporting Fallout: New Vegas. After all, recently, you guys unofficially voted it your favorite Fallout game here at Destructoid.

A team has been hard at work trying to get multiplayer in the game, and it...kind of works. It basically seeds the host's game and other players are just kind of there. It can spring a heap of glitches, but it technically works. The next phase is getting it out the public, which you can sign up for on the official site, but for now, it's a thing that exists.

Mega Man Legacy Collection Special Edition spotted

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST

The physical editions of the Mega Man Legacy Collection are coming next month, and Amazon has just sprung a brand new bundle on us. It comes with a Mega Man statue and collectible E-Tank. If the former meets the latter, it's buster and helmet light up.

Don't get too excited though. Rockman Corner reached out to Capcom, and found out that it's not actually an official bundle -- it's a curated edition specifically by Amazon. The "official" bundle is the gold Mega Man amiibo by way of the 3DS version.

You can now view Destiny's Calcified Fragment list by character

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 12:30 AM PST

After not having it since launch, Bungie has made it possible to view Destiny's Calcified Fragments per character. For those who aren't aware, fragments are small little hidden objects found in various missions -- if you find a certain amount, they'll grant you one of the best guns in the game (for the raid, at least).

It wasn't extremely difficult to do on one class, but trying to do it with multiple characters was a pain, because Bungie never actually tracked individual avatars -- they just gave you a general list of all of the fragments you've acquired in total. Now, it has fixed that. All you have to do is log into Bungie.net, choose a character in the top left, go to "Advisors," and then scroll down.

View the full list below!

2K renews WWE contract with a 'multi-year' extension

Posted: 28 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST

2K has announced that they've extended their partnership with WWE, who is seemingly happy with their progress over the years. Financial terms and the length of the agreement have not been disclosed, but I've reached out for more info on the former at the very least. 2K is also doubling down on WWE SuperCard.

Speaking of wrestling games, I really miss the old school, non-simulation arcade titles. I liked the Warzone and WCW vs. nWo: World Tour era just fine, but the Saturday Night Slam Masters and WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game era was pretty badass too.

Perhaps weirder still, it seems that Pikachu is walking around the streets of Boston.

Bungie president steps down, new CEO announced

Posted: 27 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST

Harold Ryan has stepped down as Bungie's president.

As yet a replacement president has not been announced, although former COO Pete Parsons will be taking up a new position as CEO.

Though there’s no explanations as to why Ryan has stepped down, nor information on if he will remain at the studio, Parsons did release a short statement on the official website:

"I want to personally thank Harold for his friendship, passion, hard work, and dedication in helping make Bungie the great company it is today. As a team, we celebrated many victories and weathered many storms."

"To the players of Destiny, I want you to know that my number one priority, and Bungie's, is and always has been to deliver great games that we can all share together. I believe that Destiny is a one-of-a-kind experience. I also believe you have yet to see our studio's best work. My new role here at the studio will be entirely focused on fulfilling that promise."

Could the move be a consequence of recent difficulties at the studio? Reports of an increasingly salty fanbase, coupled with rumours that Destiny 2’s release has now slipped from its September 2016 window, intimate that despite the well-received The Taken King expansion, things may not be easy right now for Bungie employees.

What are your thoughts?

So. Which one of you lovely humans is gonna sign up?

Watch a posh kid get turned into a Pokemon in this Super Mystery Dungeon trailer

Posted: 27 Jan 2016 07:00 PM PST

While Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon has been out for the 3DS in Japan and the States for months now, it isn’t being released here in Blighty until February 19. I think it’s some weird punishment for us getting Yoshi’s Woolly World first last year.

Anyway, every cloud has a silver lining and all that, as Nintendo has given us this ridiculously adorable trailer to celebrate the upcoming launch. It’s like a Famous Five story, but instead of posh kids in the 1940s, they’re Pokémon. Who are also kids. But they've been turned into Pokémon. It's the kid/squid debacle all over again...

Just watch it, it’s so dorky.
