| The best games of 2015 you didn't play Posted: 02 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST 2015 was a fantastic year for video games. There were so many great games vying for an opportunity to occupy your time. Personally, my backlog increased more than ever due to the influx of "games I just gotta play." There are always those games, however, that seem to fly under the radar. It's not because they're bad, but usually due to a lack of marketing or a poor release window. So, without further ado, here are some games you may have missed in 2015 that I thoroughly enjoyed. |
| Phantasy Star Online 2 anime coming west Posted: 02 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST It's been close to four years since Sega announced Phantasy Star Online 2 for a western release, but, despite the game being available in English throughout Asia, we're still without a localization. In an amusing turn of events, anime group Sentai Filmworks has secured the rights to bring an adaptation of Sega's elusive MMORPG to western shores following its Japanese debut this month. While a PlayStation 4 version of the game is slated for release sometime later this year, Sega hasn't announced any plans to publish the upcoming port anywhere outside of Japan. Dammit Sega. | Ben Davis's personal picks for Game of the Year 2015 Posted: 02 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST 2015 was a tremendous year for me. I've now been an official contributor at Destructoid for just about a full year, since I started last January. I may not have had the time to write as much as I would have liked, but I had a ton of fun putting together all of the features, reviews, and news pieces that I contributed over the past year, and I look forward to continuing to do so in 2016. I hope you all enjoyed my words as well! I also happened to play one of my favorite games of all time this year, which I even had the pleasure of reviewing. Oh, and did I mention I got engaged a few months back? Like I said, 2015 was a pretty great year! I always look forward to the end of the year when it comes time to put together Game of the Year lists. It's a joy to think back on all the great games I played while reading about other peoples' favorites too. Many of us have very different tastes, and that's awesome! I may not have spent much time with Metal Gear Solid V or Fallout 4, for example, but I still love reading about how much enjoyment others got out of them. That's why we play games, after all, to have fun. And nothing better exemplifies that than a good old Game of the Year list. Some may find my own list to contain some strange choices, but these were the games that brought me the most joy this year. I look forward to reading everyone else's lists as well! |
| New pachinko laws pushed SNK back to games Posted: 02 Jan 2016 07:15 AM PST Six years after its last major release, SNK Playmore is getting back to its roots as a game studio. In 2015, SNK made a surprising about-face. Not only did the Neo Geo company announce a new entry in the King of Fighters series after spending the better part of a decade exploiting its past work, rather than make anything new, it also revealed plans to abandon its pachinko business. Speaking with Famitsu in a recent interview, SNK gaming division boss Yutaka Noguchi reiterated the company's change of course was partially brought on by new pachislot regulations in Japan. According to Noguchi, SNK would have needed to make drastic changes to how it does things no matter what, and ultimately decided a return to game development was for the best. "Even as of now, we're better known as a game company than a pachislot company," said Noguchi. "People still talk about us (as a game company) when we say our name." While the company hasn't put out any big original projects since King of Fighters XIII in 2010, it has re-released a number of classic SNK titles on various digital marketplaces, like Steam and smartphones, in recent years. The sales on these platforms, Noguchi says, helped encourage the company to return to games, rather than double down on pachinko. To help restore the company to what it once was, Noguchi adds SNK has recently brought back a number of veteran developers who have left the company over the years in addition to reallocating personnel from the pachinko division to game development. | Want to live in the World of Warcraft? Move to Canada Posted: 02 Jan 2016 06:15 AM PST So, this is silly. A suburb in Ottawa was designed with a little inspiration from Azeroth, borrowing a bunch of street names from cities and locations from World of Warcraft. If you've ever had a burning desire to live on Silvermoon Crescent, now is your chance. There are also streets named after Raven's Wood, for you druid types, Stormwind for filthy Alliance members, plus Winterspring and Ashenvale. This is what happens when you put nerds in charge of city planning. Canadian subdivision uses World of Warcraft cities for real-world street names [VentureBeat] |
| Posted: 02 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST Every new year, we make a resolution for us to accomplish. Then we promptly forget about losing weight or joining a gym or becoming an assassin. But this time around, we laser focus on the ones that got away. Because everyone has that one thing they've never finished despite how much they try. It's not the same as a backlog per se. Anyone can double down and get through a backlog. But this game has some kind of personal history with you. This game is a white whale and your inner Ahab is cursing up a storm. |
| Street Fighter V live-action prologue coming in March Posted: 02 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST If you love to watch talented athletes wave their hands around and pretend to throw fireballs at each other, I have some good news for you. Street Fighter: Resurrection, a live-action mini-series intended to serve as a prologue for the events in the soon to be released Street Fighter V is on its way. Made by the team behind Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, Resurrection looks like it will provide more of the same -- decent production values, great live-action interpretations of the series' iconic characters, and slightly (well, maybe more than slightly) goofy looking action. Look, it's hard to keep up the pathos while yelling "sonic boom!" and flailing your hands about. This is totally the kind of silliness I can get behind. And hey, they nailed Nash's hair! |
