The original Psychonauts is coming to the PS4

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 02:30 PM PST

In case you hadn't already picked up Psychonauts when it was available on the Xbox 360, the PS3, or Steam, you'll be pleased to hear it's soon to make its way to the PS4. Or maybe not, I don't know. If you haven't bought it yet what are the chances you really care?

Community manager James Spafford made the announcement earlier today on the PlayStation blog, further shoving this once cult hit into the garish spotlight. I remember when Psychonauts was this forgotten gem of a game that you'd have to scavenge for in pawn shops and flea markets, hoping to find one of the original copies. Now its available on everything and has two sequels on the way, one of which is being designed for fancy new VR technology and the other a landmark crowdfunding success. How are snooty gamers going to lay claim to hipster cred by name dropping Psychonauts now? It's almost as if people like the game and want to see more of it.

This Mario 64 glitch walkthrough broke my brain

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 01:30 PM PST

What is the meaning of life? I'm not sure, but I'm beginning to believe it's lurking somewhere in this ridiculously in-depth Super Mario 64 glitch video commentated by pannenkoek2012.

The video, a breakdown of the game's inner workings and how it is possible to earn a star in the level Hazy Maze Cave "using 0.5 A [button] presses," is more than a hundred hours in the making. It has captivated me throughout the day -- a few minutes here, a few there. I'm only now nearing the end. That segment on parallel universes (yes, really!) took quite a while to get through.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is hoppin' to PS4, Vita in February

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 12:30 PM PST

We're quite fond of the rhythmic dungeon-crawler Crypt of the NecroDancer around here. I like it. Darren likes it. Patrick gave the PC version a 9.5 out of 10. The more platforms it's on, the better.

The PlayStation 4 and Vita ports are coming up soon. They'll be available digitally in North America and Europe on February 2, 2016 with Cross-Buy and dance pad support.

Now, you won't be able to import your own music or use mods that Mega Man-ify everything, but developer Brace Yourself Games is adding "a new exclusive soundtrack created by Jake 'Virt' Kaufman, the composer for Shovel Knight, and one additional surprise."

Hatoful Mario Maker: Level design pigeon Yamamura gets costume

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

Super Mario Maker just keeps adding adorable new 8-bit costumes. Recently we've seen Birdo and the Excitebike biker and a fab Super Mario Land nod.

Things are less nostalgic this time around, as Nintendo announced a Yamamura costume for the platformer. This no-longer-caged-bird previously spent time in the level editor, giving future Miyamotos tips about designing levels.

After playing a Super Mario Maker Event Level coming to Course World on January 13, Yamamura can take flight and even date other Rock Doves (plain ass pigeons).

Rockstar North head leaves company after 17 month sabbatical

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 11:30 AM PST

Rockstar North studio head Leslie Benzies is no longer with the company, Rockstar confirmed to Kotaku today. Benzies, who joined Rockstar North in 1999 before it was even called Rockstar North, played a large part in the development of the Grand Theft Auto series as lead producer since Grand Theft Auto III.

Following the huge release of Grand Theft Auto V, Benzies went on an understandable sabbatical. That was over a year ago, and it turns out Benzies hasn't been back to the office since. Before going on sabbatical, Benzies bought a church in Scotland for over £500,000 in order to preserve it for the community.

"We can confirm that Leslie Benzies went on sabbatical on September 1, 2014 and has decided not to return to work for the company," Rockstar said. "We are very grateful for Leslie’s contributions to Rockstar over the last 15 years as we worked together to make some amazing games.Leslie helped us build an incredible team that will continue to create great experiences for our fans. Leslie will always be a friend to the company and of course we are going to miss him but we wish him the absolute best for the future."

Taking 17 months off work and then quitting is possibly the all-time dopest move ever made and we wish Benzies nothing but the best and also for him to let us stay in his cool church if we ever visit Soctland, thanks.

A sequel to Story of Seasons is coming to Japan this year

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 11:00 AM PST

Story of Seasons, also known as that one Harvest Moon game that isn't actually Harvest Moon, is getting a sequel in Japan this year. Like the original, Story of Seasons: Good Friends of Three Villages is a 3DS exclusive farming simulator that tasks players with managing a farm while creating a life for themselves in a quaint rural community.

As the name would imply, Good Friends of Three Villages offers three distinct towns to be explored. Each village features its own culture and, of course, different potential spouses. Because while Story of Seasons markets itself as a farming sim, we all know getting married to the cutest anime boy is the real object of the game.

Story of Seasons: Good Friends of Three Villages hasn't been announced for an American release quite yet, but given the success of the original game I'd be surprised if it didn't come west eventually.

Pixie's portable picks for Game of the Year 2015

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 10:30 AM PST

Okay, it's high time I do one of these GOTY listicle things so I can move on with 2016 and go back to playing old stuff. Given I'm primarily a handheld player, I spend much of my time playing a decent mix of old and new games as well as re-releases, but worry not, console and PC friends, some of this stuff has emerged on your platforms in 2015 as well!

Maybe not Xbox One, though. And this is going to come as a shock to some, but there are no Atlus games on this list. I did indeed buy some 2015 Atlus releases, but I just wasn't in the mood for traditional JRPGs last year, so they're on the shelf for now. I've also skipped Persona 4: Dancing All Night for the time being.

With that aside, here are my portable gaming picks of 2015!

Psychonauts 2 campaign closes with $3.8M in funding

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST

Double Fine took to new crowdfunding/investment platform Fig for the development of a sequel to the beloved Psychonauts. The project reached its funding goal of $3.3 million five days before the close of the campaign before closing out today with a total of $3,829,024 raised.

Roughly half of that figure comes from regular "backers" giving money ($1,954,524) to the project for rewards (including a copy of the game at release) like traditional crowdfunding platforms (Kickstarter), while the other half ($1,874,500) comes from "investors." Fig allows people to invest in projects with the possibility of making money back on the investment.

Tim Schafer loosed a whole bunch of Psychonauts 2 plot earlier, if you want a more specific idea of what to expect. In the mean time -- it takes a few years to develop games -- the original Psychonauts will be coming to PS4 soon (or just nab it on Steam).

Titanfall dev working on 'new 3rd person action/adventure IP'

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 09:30 AM PST

Titanfall's coming up on two years old, huh? While all the AI robots toil away on deserted servers, developer Respawn is hard at work on Titanfall 2, which may find better longevity while no longer an Xbox console exclusive.

But that's not all Respawn is working on, according to a recent job listing for a senior level designer.

"We are now recruiting designers for two game development projects - a new game in the Titanfall universe as well as a new 3rd person action/adventure IP," the listing reads. I imagine the new game is Titanfall 2, unless it's an additional project in Titanfall universe. But what's this third-person action game from a first-person shooter studio with pedigree dating back to Call of Duty? It not being in the Titanfall universe means my favorite thing: new IP. Now, what could it be?

PlayStation Store 'Essentials' sale makes some bold claims

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST

Lest you miss out on "essential" pieces of gaming history like Call of Duty: Ghosts or Watch Dogs, the PlayStation Store has some major deals on "must owns" through Monday (January 18). Most things are at least half off and there are also over 100 movies included in this sale, most of which suck, so just ignore that tab.

But if you want a cheap price on 17 Vita games, 68 PS3 games, or 28 PS4 games, then this is the sale for you. And there are some legit "essentials" here, like:

  • Persona 4 Golden for $12 ($4 for the inferior PS2 classic version)
  • Tearaway for $10
  • Parasite Eve and Suikoden for $1.50; Xenogears for $4
  • Shadow of the Colossus and ICO for $10 each
  • Mass Effect trilogy for $12
  • Katamari Damacy, Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, Symphony of the Night for $4
  • Enslaved Premium Edition for $8

Metro and Infamous stuff on the cheap, too, between infinite Grand Theft Auto and Ubisoft listings. Picking anything up?

Here's the 2016 Pokemon distribution event schedule

It is Pokemon's 20th anniversary this year, and as part of the celebration, you can expect a whole lot of distribution events for Pokemon X/Y and Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Here's when and where you'll be able to get some rare pocket monsters:

  • Mew: February 1 - 24, 2016 at GameStop
  • Celebi: March 1 - 24, 2016 at Nintendo Network
  • Jirachi: April 1 - 24, 2016 at Nintendo Network
  • Darkrai: May 1 - 24, 2016 at GameStop
  • Manaphy: June 1 - 24, 2016 at Nintendo Network
  • Shaymin: July 1 - 24, 2016 at Nintendo Network
  • Arceus: August 1 - 24, 2016 at GameStop

  • Genesect: November 1 - 24, 2016 at GameStop
  • Meloetta: December 1 - 24, 2016 at Nintendo Network

Those dates are specifically for North America. There's a similar page on the European website with the exact same Pokemon listed, but it says to "check back for details." If the powers that be could find it in their hearts to send me all of these guys in Pokemon Shuffle, that would be real nice.

Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 delayed into March

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

While Koei Tecmo has no plans to release Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 in the west, plenty of folks pre-ordered or otherwise plan to import the beach volleyball game as a show of support for Koei Tecmo or as a symbolic act against perceived "censorship," so it's worth noting that the game was delayed a month in Japan.

Both Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Fortune for PS4 and Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Venus for Vita have been moved from their initial February 25 release to March 24 in Japan, according to Famitsu. Adjust your waifu dinner plans accordingly.

Atlus confirms Persona 5 release, hints unannounced games will bring popular series together

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST

It's not that I have severe trust issues stemming from broken homes and unfeeling society, Atlus. It's just that I've been burned before. So when I hear Atlus CEO Naoto Hiraoka saying in Famitsu, according to Hachima Kikou with translation via Gematsu, "In the summer, we'll launch the long-awaited Persona 5," it's reassuring, is all.

If we can have a representative from Atlus provide a new comment everyday leading up to Persona 5 confirming Persona 5's release, that would be swell, Atlus, ok?

But beyond what we know -- Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, Persona 5 -- Atlus, "plan[s] to release a large number of titles" in 2016.

"In the summer, we’ll launch the long-awaited Persona 5," Hiraoka said. "Of course, in addition to that we have several unannounced titles. I have no doubt this will be a year Atlus' popular series all gather together.

"While the release date hasn't been decided, I want you to also look forward to VanillaWare’s 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim."

I'm undecided when it comes to Heroes of the Storm's Greymane

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST

Greymane has hit Heroes of the Storm today, entering the arena as the only Worgen character -- the werewolf-like race of Warcraft fame.

After an afternoon of giving him a shot though, I'm not super jazzed about fitting him into my normal rotation.

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir has a June release in North America

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 06:30 AM PST

Atlus is launching Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir this week in Japan, but there will unsurprisingly be more waiting involved for the Western release. The 2D action-RPG is hitting PS3, PS4, and PS Vita in North America on June 7, 2016. Details on the European release are unknown at this time.

For now, though, there's a new website full of oh-so-pretty Vanillaware artwork.

Amazon Prime members can now save 20 percent on new games

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

Amazon Prime members are getting a nice bonus starting today: 20 percent off newly released physical video games (including pre-orders) shipped and sold by Amazon. The discount is offered on new titles until two weeks after launch, so you can wait for reviews if you'd like.

While collector's editions are applicable, "product bundles including but not limited to console game bundles" are excluded. Individual product pages show eligibility, and you'll see the savings applied to your purchase at checkout. Also, if you have any existing pre-orders, you'll get the discount.

As someone who buys a lot of stuff from Amazon, including but certainly not limited to just video games, this is a great benefit. I've been a Prime member for years now (subs are $99 these days), but it's worth noting that the discount will work if you're using a free Prime trial.

EA Access is available on PC now too

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 05:45 AM PST

EA Access, the subscription service to lease certain Electronic Arts games, is no longer exclusive to the Xbox One. It's now available on PC as well, but rebranded to "Origin Access."

Despite the name change, Origin Access looks to function identically to EA Access. For $4.99 per month, users are granted free rein to a vault of games to play as often as they wish assuming the rent keeps getting paid. At the onset of the PC program, the collection of games is 15 titles strong.

Moving Access to PC seems like a natural evolution of the program, but the timing's curious. Why wait 17 months from the launch of Access on Xbox? We've asked EA if this delay had to do with an expiring timed-exclusivity deal with Microsoft, and if the PC launch opens the door to PlayStation platforms. We'll update this story if/when EA responds.

Pokemon gets a special 3DS bundle for its 20th anniversary

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 05:30 AM PST

February 27 marks the 20-year anniversary of the release of Pokémon Red and Blue in Japan. In those 20 years, the lovable game about pocket monsters has grown into a marketing mammoth. Like an earlier Angry Birds, almost anything could be found emblazoned with a recognizable Pokémon branding.

Times, they don't change that much. On February 27, a new 3DS bundle will be released that will fittingly pay proper tribute to both those original games and the merchandising machine those games spawned. This bundle will feature two included cover plates -- one with Red's Charizard, the other with Blue's Blastoise. The 3DS will also come with both games pre-installed on the system.

In Europe, the celebration's the same in sentiment but varies slightly in execution. Across the pond, three different 2DS packages will be offered wherein the system is colored red, blue, or yellow depending on the version of the game picked. There's no word on whether this will be made available in the US.

These new bundles shouldn't come as much surprise to anyone who has followed the arc of Pokémon, because its owners have largely made a living on selling fans the same experience over and over for two decades now. It's disingenuous, but it's also okay. If it weren't okay, people would have stopped paying long ago. That's why these bundles feel mostly like The Pokémon Company raising its glass of champagne and proclaiming "To 20 more years!"

Alien and a drunken fart man killing everything in a new Mortal Kombat X video

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

Few video game trailers are as effective and efficient as the Mortal Kombat X new character videos. They show the fighters, one at a time, destroying the opposition as you could theoretically do if you were controlling them. "Theoretically" being the key word here.

Mortal Kombat X's Kombat Pack 2 will sport four of these characters: the Xenomorph from Alien, Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Bo' Rai Cho from previous Mortal Kombat games, and Triborg who is new to the Mortal Kombat universe.

The first two are obvious horror movie staples, feared for their indiscriminate murdering ways. Leatherface makes liberal use of his chainsaw, sometimes finding ways to make it operate vertically on its own while he mallets some poor schlup in the head. Alien is the perfect organism and the perfect killing machine. But, and maybe it's just me, Mortal Kombat X's take has the Xenomorph fighting a bit too bipedal to make it look natural.

Triborg brought rockets to a knife fight, as he's some sort of Iron Man-esque robot on a violence bent. And, then there's Bo' Rai Cho, a drunken fat boy who uses fists and flatulence in equal parts. Vomit, too. Don't forget the vomit.

Starmen.net organizing one final push for Mother 3 localization

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 04:30 AM PST

The ultra-dedicated fans at Starmen.net never seem to give up. They have been campaigning for an official Western release of Mother 3 for what seems like a lifetime. According to the fansite, now is the ripest it will ever be with Lucas joining Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, along with the Japanese Virtual Console release.

The message is that it's now or never. In order to get Nintendo's attention, the campaign is leveraging that recent release by posting Miiverse art to promote the idea of bringing it west. The organizers want quality posts rather than spam, but they are inviting all to participate.

Who knows if this will have any effect on Nintendo of America's decisions? On the one hand, we've heard this a thousand times before and there's not much reason to expect anything different. On the other hand, I feel like Nintendo ought to just want us to shut up and may eventually give in.

Review: Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST

When the Chronicles series was announced, my response was mixed. I mean, it's cool that we're getting to see new settings outside of the usual suspect after all, but by that same token, I'd rather see those new areas in a fully-fledged 3D game.

These Prince of Persia inspired 2.5D gaidens (including last year's China) are the next best thing though, albeit with some provisos.

Ni-Oh is evidently targeting 60fps at 1080p

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST

Koei Tecmo is really pushing its boundaries hardware-wise, with its first ever lead PS4 project Attack on Titan, and now, Ni-Oh. According to 4Gamer, the publisher is going to attempt 1080p/60fps on PS4 for the action game.

That was one of the only problems with Bloodborne -- its 30fps limit -- so I'm pretty excited for this Onimusha/Souls mashup if it can hit that 60fps mark. Maybe it'll be a nice return to form for Team Ninja.

Hyrule Warriors Legends has more Linkle footage for you

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

If you're constantly looking for more Hyrule Warriors Legends footage, the game's producer has been doing quick looks recently, including this new bit that heavily features Epona and (8:56) Linkle. There's even a bit of story for her, showing her humble beginnings as a villager, donning her heroic garb and answering the call of her people.

Again, gameplay-wise, she looks like a lot of fun with her ranged style. All of the characters look great actually -- too bad we have to wait weeks until it's released outside of Japan.

For Honor will definitely have a campaign element after complaints to Ubisoft

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 02:30 AM PST

For Honor producer Stephane Cardin has provided an update of sorts for the project by way of Ubisoft's YouTube channel, and development seems to be coming along nicely. One big revelation however is that Cardin and his team are definitely going to have a campaign element, after so many recent complaints about Ubisoft titles ditching them. It was confirmed before, but they really want you to know that it's happening.

I'm kind of half and half on the "single-player needs to be in" bit. For a squad-based game like Rainbow Six where it's so multiplayer focused, and we already know the IP, its fine. But for titles like Titanfall, where it's a brand new IP, some background or some way to dive in to the world would be nice.

Metal Gear Online entering limited PC beta today

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST

Metal Gear Online may have a number of issues preventing it from achieving greatness, but it's still a decent diversion, and a nice bonus on top of Metal Gear Solid V. Now it's headed off of consoles, as MGO is entering a limited beta phase starting today. If everything goes according to plan it will launch at 10PM PT later today.

It's a nice gesture that the team is still trying to salvage this game, but with Kojima's input gone, I'm not super hopeful for the future of the franchise now, or at any point in the future.

The Witcher 3, Pillars of Eternity score Writers Guild Award nominations

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an unstoppable, award-winning machine. While it failed to take home the industry's top prize, the Destructoid Game of the Year Award, it has secured victories from other, lesser organizations such as The Game Awards, the Golden Joystick Awards, and the Sex On Top Of Mythical Creatures Awards. Just a few days ago it received four nominations for the Game Developers Choice Awards, and on Monday another prestigious group shortlisted the game for its annual awards show.

The Witcher 3 is one of four games that scored a nomination from the Writers Guild of America. It's up for Outstanding Achievement in Videogame Writing alongside Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Pillars of Eternity and Rise of the Tomb Raider. Better luck next year, I Am Bread.

The leak was right, as Homefront: The Revolution is set for May 17

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 12:24 AM PST

Well, Deep Silver likely felt that it needed to spill the beans after the release date for Homefront: The Revolution was uncovered by way of a Target pre-order card, so here it is -- the official announcement, in video form.

I have to say this is one of the more generic trailers I've seen in months, and nothing leading up to this release (including the bad first game) is getting me excited. Remember 1984's semi-topical Red Dawn? It's like that, but with Koreans!

Danny Trejo apparently plays Fallout 4 as himself

Posted: 12 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST

Danny Trejo, who was in films such as Con Air, Desperado, and more recently, Machete, plays Fallout...as himself. This hilarious revelation comes by way of Twitter, where the actor posted a picture of his in-game avatar, rocking the wasteland with a purple HUD.

Normally I think "celeb plays game" posts are kind of boring, but when coupled with Trejo's actual in-game character and eccentric personality, I had to share it. For reference, Trejo played the ghoul Raul Tejada in Fallout: New Vegas.

Hey look, Nintendo has an official Tumblr page now

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 11:18 PM PST

Well, Nintendo decided to make an official Tumblr account, if that's the sort of thing you care about and want to give them a follow. As of right now they've debuted two posts -- one GIF from A Link to the Past, and a factoid/appeal to nostalgia post for the original Super Mario Bros.

If they start posting actual interesting bits of gaming history I may give this a read in the future, but for now, it's a thing that exists.
