Eat trash as a bear in Wii U exclusive Epic Dumpster Bear

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 02:00 PM PST

I've covered weird Wii U eShop exclusives before, but Epic Dumpster Bear might be the most out there.

Inspired by 16-bit platforming classics, you'll be playing as a bear who eats food out of dumpsters because an evil corporation destroyed his forest. Looks like it plays a lot like Super Meat Boy meets Super Mario Bros., just not as easy on the eyes as either of those games.

Epic Dumpster Bear will be hitting the Wii U eShop in spring 2016. I don't know about you, but personally, I've had my fill of bears from that one time I went to the "bear bar" with a friend. No thank you, young Ricky Gervais lookalike; I would not like to share a salmon with you.

Man swears off Xbox after son spends $8,000 on FIFA microtransactions

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 01:00 PM PST

It's not just Kanye who hates microtransactions. Canada's Lance Perkins is upset after his 17-year-old son unwittingly charged $7,625.88 in FIFA microtransactions to the credit card he was granted for emergencies and family purchases.

"He thought it was a one-time fee for the game," Perkins said.  "He's just as sick as I am, [because] he never believed he was being charged for every transaction, or every time he went onto the game."

The credit card company wouldn't address the charge unless Perkins would charge his own son with fraud. Perkins reached out to Microsoft and was told the bill stands, though whomever he was in contact with said they'd look into the charge after Perkins explained his son is a minor. Microsoft got back to CBC with a statement encouraging, "parents to use the many platform and service features we make available to prevent unapproved charges."

Perkins has taken an understandably hard-line stance in response to the ridiculous bill, saying, "There will never be another Xbox system--or any gaming system--in my home."

Parkour as a human and sniff out meatballs as a dog in Dogchild

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 12:30 PM PST

Never heard of Dogchild? Me neither, till today. Apparently it was announced in December of 2014 and won "best game of the year" from the PlayStation Awards for titles developed in Spain. Before you rush to the PlayStation Store ready to drop $14.99 on the best Spain has to offer, you might want to check out some of the gameplay.

As you can see, there is not only parkour, but also first person dog sections where you have to dig up meatballs, for some reason. From what I can gather, you're investigating the disappearances of local dogs while receiving texts from someone who can seemingly tell what you're doing.

Just from these few minutes and the game's description, I get the feeling that whoever localized this didn't do a very good job. Some of it seems a bit off or wordy. But how can you say no to a game where you get a text that says "These meatballs are all over the place. You must find the person responsible for this!" and subtitles "woof" whenever a dog barks?

My boys Mario and Sonic are back together again for yet another Olympic games game -- this time in Rio de Janeiro. For the fifth entry in the Mario & Sonic Do Sports For Some Reason series, the roster of playable characters is doubling with 20 new characters.

Nintendo announced the 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is coming out on March 18, while the Wii U version will be out "later this year."

I think this Division trailer is telling us to not lick our money

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 11:30 AM PST

There's no small irony in Ubisoft, a company that very much likes getting money, releasing a trailer advising of the perils of handling money. Don't handle money, don't lick money, don't eat money. Do you want diseases? 'Cause that's how you get diseases.

To prove this point, Ubisoft set up a site to "analyze" money from the United Kingdom and Europe. I just so happened to have 50 euro in my wallet, so I ran it through the machine. Apparently, there are high traces of urine, cocaine, and marijuana on my bill (all predictable), and 29,000 bacteria. It's deemed an extreme risk of carrying infection.

In fact, it's probably safest if you just don't have money. Live broke and with the life-crushing stress of how you'll survive. Once the plague hits, then you'll have the leg-up on all those haughty money-havers!

Man at Arms makes Pyramid Head's Great Knife from Silent Hill: Homecoming

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 11:00 AM PST

I don't put my nerd glasses on very often, but here goes: Man at Arms made Pyramid Head's Great Knife, but they chose the worst version of it and the worst game as inspiration. In Silent Hill 2, the Great Knife was a vicious slab of metal that looked disturbing because no one in their right mind would choose to use it as a weapon. In Silent Hill: Homecoming, Pyramid Head (now called the Bogeyman - blech) uses what amounts to a giant combat knife, in keeping with the military theme of that entry in the series. It looks silly.

Okay, I got it out of my system. The rational part of me understands why they chose this design, as it's more challenging to make and probably more visually interesting for most people. My only other observation is that, having previously worked in a shop not dissimilar to this one, I get nervous with how close these guys get to their grinders. Maybe it's a trick of the camera, but yeesh, don't lose a hand when making Video Game Swords, please.

Live streaming an early look at Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 10:45 AM PST

[Update: The stream has now ended.]

I got my hands on an early copy of Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster for Xbox One, one of the only games in the Resident Evil series that I haven't played, so I'm going in blind. All I know about RE:0 is that it takes place at least partially on a train, which sounds dreadful enough to me as I used to work on the railroad.

Trust me when I say this, there is no whistling while you work on the railroad, more like being cramped in a tight space with another human for 18 hours with no electronics. I think if I still worked on the railroad I'd welcome zombies, it would be more exciting than the time we stopped our train to decapitate a deer's head using the trains wheels so the engineer could take it home to mount it.

What I'm trying to say is I'm going to stream now, and you should probably watch if you're interested or just want to hear horror stories about the railroad. Resident Evil 0 HD Remaster is set to release on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in just over a week on January 19.

We might get Gears of War 4 a little sooner than anticipated

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 10:30 AM PST

There's a good chance that we'll be fragging Locusts and rolling into chest-high walls a bit earlier this year than we thought. Microsoft has stealthily moved the launch window for Gears of War 4 up by a month or two.

As reported by GameSpot, Microsoft is now saying that Gears 4 will release in "Fall 2016." Previously, it was set for "Holiday 2016." The two might seem synonymous, but the former smacks more of September or October, while the latter is more fit for November or December. Regardless, it'll be toward the tail-end of this year.

By the time that rolls around, we'll have a fair idea of what Gears 4 has to offer. There's still going to be a beta sometime this spring. Currently, it's available to everyone who played Gears of War Ultimate Edition, but it'll likely open up to more people eventually, as these things tend to do.

We've heard very little about Gears of War 4 to this point, but expect that to change very soon. Microsoft seems to be betting big on The Coalition's first original title, as it's poised to be the most alluring first-party Xbox One exclusive of 2016. Just wait until that marketing cycle ramps up to full speed, and there will likely be a steady flow of new details and reveals.

It'd be 'really hard' to bring Nathan Drake back after Uncharted 4

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST

Expanding further on Naughty Dog's lack of plans for the Uncharted series after this year's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, co-director Neil Druckmann told The Sun about the plot of A Thief's End, "But with the end of this story, it will be really hard to do a sequel with Nathan Drake."

I mean, it is called A Thief's End.

"We’ve been with this character for so long," Druckmann said. "He's at the height of his popularity, so it's not a good business decision. But I feel like the best way to honor him is to go out on top, to finish his story." Druckmann notes that Sony owns Uncharted, so the series could continue, but it might have to retreat into prequel territory or continue with new leads, not unlike BioWare is doing with Mass Effect, or what Gears of War seems to be doing with Gears of 4.

That sounds like prime dancing around a dead Drake. Or at least a finally, seriously reformed one. Or, hey, middle ground -- maybe he gets maimed or something, sidelining him forever. Nathan Drake's story ends April 26, then.

Final Fantasy XV's cafe-filled city and new battle mode

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 09:30 AM PST

Oh, baby, it's tidbit time. Over in the Final Fantasy XV forum, the development team has addressed some questions about the scale of its cities and changeable difficulty settings.

First, Planner Ishikawa Tomonori, on the city of Altissia: "Altissia has many and varied locations, such as multiple cafes, ship-bourne market places and parks etc. The city is of a considerable scale, to the extent that even the developers sometimes get lost there!

"The player is free to take a leisurely walk around the complex maze of streets, or ride the gondola to see the sights and there is also added enjoyment to be had looking for restaurants to visit!

"You are bound to encounter some unique characters when exploring the city streets."

Watch an absurd race through Mario Maker's hardest levels

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST

"Mario Maker has really provided an opportunity for very sadistic individuals, like this man playing right here, PangaeaPanga, to create horrifying levels for our amusement," speedrunner Carl Sagan said during the gaming marathon Awesome Games Done Quick 2016.

I only managed to catch a few of the speedruns live during the week-long event, and one of them happened to be the Super Mario Maker Hard Level Race. What luck! The segment was wild: two teams of skilled players soared through some of the most imaginatively difficult user-made levels like they were nothing at all. Practice, practice, practice.

Panga's notorious P-Break showed up, much to my delight. "It was at one point considered the hardest level that had ever been made in Super Mario Maker," said Sagan. "...out of every about 10,000 attempts, it gets only one clear [from Mario Maker players]. And honestly, probably about half of all those clears are just us four beating it over and over again."

Another runner, GrandPOOBear, chimed in: "Yeah, my first time through P-Break was 27 hours." That's 27 hours to beat a single level, and here they are racing in it.

DC Universe Online is headed to Xbox One this spring

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 08:45 AM PST

Five years ago, DC Universe Online debuted on PC and PlayStation 3. Much has changed since then, including a transition to free-to-play and a PS4 port, but there's still more to be done. Daybreak Games (formerly Sony Online Entertainment) is bringing its MMO to Xbox One this spring.

The studio held a Q&A today on a livestream with Kinda Funny Games. When I first tuned in, they were chatting about avocados, but I did pick up a few fresh DCUO details: players won't be able to transfer their existing characters to the Xbox One version, and support for PC/PS4 cross-platform play is coming the week of January 25, 2016. Find more on what's ahead here.

The Witcher 3 patch 1.12 smashes Hearts of Stone bugs

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 08:30 AM PST

There's a lot to peruse in this 1.12 patch-notes-filled The Witcher 3 PDF.

Much of it has to do with the new-ish Hearts of Stone expansion and fixing bugs therein, but rest assured that this patch isn't 15gb (a much more reasonable 1.4gb) and it contains quite a few continued general improvements to gameplay, UI, and performance.

Some highlights, if you don't want to read through the whole PDF:

Mike Martin's picks for games that he picked in 2015

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

Hello everybody! Your (not so) favorite, foul-mouthed, perverted, shit-posting Community Manager here. 2015 was a helluva year for games. All bullshit aside, we are starting to see some truly amazing games come out. When I was a babby, playing RC Pro Am and Metal Gear, I never imagined we'd see games like Rocket League and Metal Gear Solid V on our TV sets. There are plenty of things to bitch about in this industry, but just sit the fuck down and think for a minute: Games 10 years ago, compared to now. Of course there were trailblazers back then (and even 20 years ago), but with the fidelity, systems, detail, and scope that we see on the regular? No.

It's an amazing time to be a gamer. It's also an amazing time to show you my penis. However, they refuse to let me do so on the front page (fucking prudes). So instead I wrote a list of just a few games I really enjoyed in 2015. These aren't awards. There is no order. This is what I liked and how I liked it. It's the Burger King - Mike style, of games in 2015. Mmmmm Burger King... Anyway, here's a small handful of titles that aroused my nethers in 2015:

Take to the country with 16 minutes of Dying Light's The Following

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST

Dying Light was one of the unexpected hits of 2015, with its parkour hook providing just enough to help stomach yet another zombie game. IGN has The Following expansion producer Tymon Smektała with a guided tour of the first 16 minutes as you leave the comfort of the building-filled city for a more open, natural environment.

The expansion pack, "is for people who are good at Dying Light," though it will scale to your individual skill level. There are also new additions like a crossbow and dune buggy. The Following releases February 9.

EA got NCAA Football fans' hopes up just to dash them

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST

Facebook fans of the EA NCAA Football franchise were treated to a seemingly ominous message this morning. The page, which has been inactive for 18 months, posted a three-second clip of a heart monitor beeping. Many took this as a clear signal that NCAA Football might be returning, that this presumed-dead series still had life in it.

Nah. Not at all.

EA Sports first talked to Polygon about the Facebook post. As reported by Polygon, "The label has nothing to announce and that the video was posted because college football's national championship game is tonight." A follow-up communication simply said "No news, sorry to get your hopes up."

Since posting, EA has provided a third, more detailed statement saying "We have no new plans or announcements to make regarding the EA Sports NCAA Football series. Today's National Championship game reminds us more than ever that the hearts in our community still beat for college football."

EA's tone-deafness again strikes a terribly sour note

I've fallen a little behind in Heroes of the Storm since Lunara's debut, but I'll want to get back to playing regularly soon. Blizzard is adding Greymane tomorrow! He's a ranged human assassin capable of transforming into a powerful melee-centric beast mid-fight.

The top 33 indie games to look for in 2016

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

Alright, last time I did this, most of these games didn't come out the next year. In fact, some of the "top indies of 2013" according to me still aren't out. That's the indie lifestyle I suppose, releasing a game "when it's ready."

Hopefully I have better luck this time, and these games actually come out this year. Hopefully.

Why 33? Well, it's actually my favorite number! When I was a kid (and even now), Patrick Ewing was my go-to role model athlete. His number on the Knicks? 33 of course! It's also the number of Larry Bird, an all-time great.

Xbox goes soft as PlayStation users reclaim 'most porn watched'

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 05:45 AM PST

Pornhub, which I am told by other people familiar with the webpage is a site for viewing adult, pornographic films, has released its statistical year in review. All sorts of interesting trends popping up, here. "Lesbian" bumped off "teen" as the most popular search term worldwide while "step mom" went up another place to third (while "milf" and "mom" both dropped to fifth and sixth, respectively). "Cartoon" went up four places, too.

But the more granular you get, the more interesting porn terminology, already hilarious in its abstraction, becomes. For example, the fastest growing search is for "giantess," which was searched over 1000% more in 2015 than the prior year. While it was the fastest growing search term, it only pops up in the 18-34 age range, and it didn't make the US-specific list, which is topped by "hardcore lesbian scissoring" as the most trending. Sounds violent. Meanwhile the top two US search terms are "step mom" and "cartoon," respectively.

"Fuck me daddy" is on the rise, too.

What we're here for today, though, is to compare the video game console porn market share. PlayStation led in 2013, but Xbox numbers surged in 2014, maybe on account of no games. Now, in 2015, PlayStation has seen a 17% growth in traffic share to Xbox's 17% dip. Adding the Vita (5% of video game traffic) and PlayStation constitutes 51.9% of traffic from video game consoles to the Xbox's 37.9%. 3DS actually had the highest growth, but still only accounts for 1.3% of traffic (putting Nintendo around 10%, total).

The Steam Winter Sale made a whole lot of money

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

Stop me if you think that you've heard this one before: Steam raked in a lot of cash thanks to one of its vaunted seasonal sales. Steam's Winter Sale again turned out to be a giant source of revenue for Valve, even with the Christmas snafu souring everyone's mood.

According to a detailed look at Steam Spy, a service that estimates data and statistics about Steam based on game ownership, this sale resulted in about $270 million in revenue across 46 million sales. Almost one-tenth of it came from Fallout 4 and Grand Theft Auto V, both of which were discounted.

Those numbers aren't necessarily spot-on as some people surely added to their Steam library over that time through third-party vendors. Still, it's a ballpark figure that should be mostly accurate. Given those stats, the Steam Winter Sale brought in about twice as much money as the Summer Sale did. Everyone spends December dreaming of a white Christmas; Valve just sees green instead.

Mega Man is coming to Monster Hunter X

Capcom has just announced the latest add-on for Monster Hunter X (their new 3DS game that launched recently), and surprise, it's Mega Man related. On February 25 players will get a Yellow Devil event quest, Rush Hammer weapon, and the Rocknyan armor for your Palico. There's also a few guild cards and titles in tow.

So yeah, all of this sounds pretty awesome! Par for the course for Monster Hunter.

Review: Tharsis

Space is dangerous, everyone. If you weren't aware of this, just play Tharsis. If you wanna feel sad and hopeless, just play Tharsis. If you're known for always getting great dice rolls at tabletop night, definitely play Tharsis.

Digital board experiences are definitely an untapped market, it seems. There are a few great ones, like The Witcher Adventure Game and of course Tabletop Simulator, and now Tharsis hopes to be the next great eBoard game(TM).

Review: That Dragon, Cancer

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

It's a very odd experience as a critic, reviewing something like That Dragon, Cancer. A product that is so clearly an incredibly personal work of art created from a place of sincerity, but also a consumer product being sold to people who are not the original artist.

While I appreciate the personal nature of this particular creation, I think it's important to look at it critically, as someone outside of the events that led to its creation. Through that lens, That Dragon, Cancer is a beautifully inconsistent experience.

Killer Instinct's Season 3 will be playable at multiple events

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 02:30 AM PST

If you're itching to try out Killer Instinct's Season 3 before its release in March, you may get a chance pretty soon. According to the game's lead combat designer, it will be at PAX South at the end of January, as well as the Killer Instinct World Cup event. All we know right now is that Rash will be playable, but we aren't yet sure if Kim Wu and Tusk will be a part of the festivities.

As a reminder, Killer Instinct is coming to PC (Windows 10) roughly around the release of Season 3, at which point it will be Cross-Buy -- so make use of that free Season 1 offer with Microsoft's Games on Gold promotion.

If Mega Man merch can be made, Capcom will either make it, or allow someone else to make it. It's the eleventh commandment. Look it up. The next piece of merch on the block is the official Mega Man headset, complete with LED lights from EMIO. They'll run you $99.99, but the audio specs are not public.

I'm dubious as to the quality of these, since you can get some rockin' Sennheisers for under $100, but the novelty factor is obvious.

Oculus competitor HTC Vive up for pre-order on February 29

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 01:05 AM PST

The shroud of the dark side has fallen. Begun, the VR War has.

Oculus came out of the gate last week with a $600 pricepoint, and its biggest competitors, PlayStation VR and the HTC Vive, have yet to chime in. We're fixing to learn sooner than later about the latter though, as HTC CEO Cher Wang has shared that pre-orders are going to happen on February 29. Rumors have been floating around for weeks that it's going to be more expensive than the Rift, but we'll have to wait and see.

It differs from the Rift a bit in that it features two sensors, and is seemingly keen on getting its controller solution out of the gate around the kit's launch. So much is unknown right now (we don't even know how much the Rift's controllers cost or when they're coming), but I'm still interested to see how this all plays out.

I think PlayStation VR has the best chance to make VR go mainstream though, and is my favorite of the three, having tried them (taking both platform and general ease of use into account).

Dragon Quest Builders will not support PlayStation TV

Posted: 11 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST

When you pick up a game on Vita, it should inherently just be supported on the PS TV, right? Well that's not the case in a number of instances, and it's really starting to get confusing. For instance, just recently, Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest Builders will in fact not be on the PS TV when it's released later this month in Japan.

If you own a PS3 or PS4 this is a bit moot as it's being released on both of those platforms, but still, the PlayStation TV has been a big bust in multiple ways, and it's something to keep in mind if Builders is ever localized. At least it can stream!

Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) ends, full charity haul tops $1.2 million

Awesome Games Done Quick 2016 just ended yesterday after a week-long stretch, bringing in over $1.2 million dollars to support the Preventing Cancer Foundation. Runners played everything from the popular Super Metroid to Grand Theft Auto III, with multiple types of runs on display, like blindfolded sessions and even side-by-side races.

It was a pretty great event all around, and I had the good fortune of actually attending this year and watching some runs in person (a few of my favorites are below). Next stop: the summer event in roughly July!

Rock legend and actor David Bowie has passed away

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 11:15 PM PST

Beloved actor and singer/songwriter David Bowie passed away last night in his home in New York City after a bout with cancer. Like many multimedia icons before him, you don't necessarily immediately associate video games with Bowie, but his presence permeated throughout the industry. Not only did his likeness grace the Commodore 64 version of the Labyrinth game, but he also appeared in Omicron: Nomad's Soul, and has influenced countless developers with his personality and spirit for decades on end.

Bowie was apparently fighting until the very end, and even dropped a brand new album, Blackstar, this week, which was released to critical acclaim. I personally learned about Bowie by way of the film Labyrinth as a child, and picked up multiple albums of his immediately after viewing it, journeying through the galaxy with his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust.

Bowie is survived by his wife Iman, and son, Duncan Jones, who is currently working on the Warcraft film.
