Wii U game to be pulled from eShop temporarily

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

Troubled game launches are nothing new, but it isn't everyday you see a developer submitting a request for its hot new project to be temporarily delisted from storefronts the day after release.

That's just what budget game company RCMADIAX did Friday following the release of its Wii U title Avoider, looking to avoid potential legal trouble stemming from the game's soundtrack.

According to RCMADIAX, Avoider's current music is a "close copy" of another track, and the studio plans to swap out the tunes for something that is less likely to land the developer in hot water.

While the composer @OnlyMattDesind maintains any similarities between his work and the track in question (apparently "BIT57" from the 2011 Nintendo DSi game Rytmik Retrobits) are purely coincidence, it isn't hard to feel suspicious if you compare BIT57 with the audio in the trailer below.

At any rate, for an obscure indie game on Wii U, you have to figure any publicity is good publicity.

Target shopper arrested after pissing on games

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 10:30 AM PST

A man in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvannia turned himself into police last week after having been caught on camera at a local Target location where he exposed himself and urinated on merchandise.

According to police, after entering the store Tuesday evening, the man took a joyride in an electric handicap cart and drove around the store before stopping in the electronics aisle, where he removed urine soaked pants and voided his bladder on video games before leaving the scene.

The man now faces charges for open lewdness, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

Valkyria Chronicles Remaster screens hot and fresh out the kitchen

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 10:00 AM PST

You know who didn't shank a gimme field goal wide left? Sega, with new screenshots for Valkyria Chronicles Remaster, the PS4 port for the beloved turn-based strategy game. Sega had an easy task, especially after the nice PC release that's always on sale for like $5. Sega's goal: don't mess up. And it didn't. That's why Sega won't be sitting on the couch next week next to the Minnesota Vikings.

The remaster is releasing February 10 in Japan and comes with a playable demo battle for the upcoming Valkyria: Azure Revolution spin off. Including the demo for the new game is a good safety net for the PS4 release (especially because I reckon Japan didn't go hard into the PC release), kind of like the safety that put the reeling Packers down against the Washington football club that managed to make the playoffs without beating a winning team.

Yeah, I can't help myself.

JRPG Stranger of Sword City coming to PS Vita, Xbox One, and maybe PC this March

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 09:00 AM PST

Well, this is slightly complicated.

Back in November, NIS America unveiled plans to bring dungeon crawler Stranger of Sword City to the West, announcing March 22 and March 25 launches for the Americas and Europe, respectively.

That was for the PlayStation Vita version, which NIS says will be available both digitally and at retail. Since then, developer Experience Inc. (Demon Gaze, Ray Gigant) has revealed it is self publishing the title digitally on Xbox One in both Japan and North America that same week in late March.

An unannounced PC release also seems to be in the cards, at least according to a recent ESRB rating filed by NIS, which lists Stranger of Sword City not only for Vita, but Windows PC as well.

The title has a somewhat interesting premise, following the sole survivor of a plane crash who awakens in an unfamiliar dimension, only to be labeled as "the Chosen One" by locals and tasked with defending Escario, the titular city of swords, while searching for a way home.

Nic Rowen picks the best of 2015

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST

It's like the middle of January and you've read about five thousand GOTY lists at this point, so let's get to brass tacks. There were some great games released last year, but which ones were the best?

I have no idea.

Sorry, there are no mathematical formulas or alchemical recipes to definitively tell us what the best game of the year was (even though I think our site's democratically elected GOTY is a pretty strong contender). I can tell you what I personally enjoyed this most this year though. So here are what I consider the best parts of 2015.

Looking at it like $13 DLC, the Shovel Knight amiibo is worth it

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 06:00 AM PST

I managed to pick up a Shovel Knight amiibo yesterday for the US launch, and I couldn't resist giving it a go immediately on Wii U.

Despite the fact that I've completed the campaign roughly 10 times since its launch (not counting the Plague Knight add-on), I was surprised to find that I fell in love with it all over again.

NIS might be teasing another Firefly Diary game

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST

Disgaea studio Nippon Ichi Software recently opened a teaser site featuring Hotaru, the eponymous firefly from its gorgeous (and difficult) PlayStation Vita puzzle game, htoL#NIQ: The Firefly Diary.

There aren't exactly a lot of details regarding whatever this is. NIS promises more information is coming in the next issue of Japanese magazine Dengeki PlayStation this Thursday, January 14.

25 percent plunge on Rise of the Tomb Raider PC port

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST

Did you run out and buy an Xbox One just for Rise of the Tomb Raider? Our magic eight ball says: "Probably not." The timed exclusive heads to the PC later this month (January 27) and Lara's latest escapade on Steam can currently be pre-ordered for only $45 at GMG (including the "Remnant Resistance Pack" DLC bonus).

PlayStation 4 owners should look to NewEgg this weekend to stock up on additional DualShock 4 controllers, all of which are $20 off after coupon with color choices of black, red, white, and blue.

If the voodoo fortune teller that you've retained has already foretold your eventual $1.3 billion dollar Powerball lottery win later this week, we'd suggest buying at least an extra controller or two, you know, so that weird guy in your group can finally join in on the gaming fun. It's not Taylor's fault that his mom dropped a toaster on his head when he was a baby.

Sony tried to trademark 'Let's Play'

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 02:00 AM PST

Sony Computer Entertainment America apparently wants ownership over the term "Let's Play."

This past October, the company applied for a trademark on the phrase, which it defines as "electronic transmission and streaming of video games via global and local computer networks; streaming of audio, visual, and audiovisual material via global and local computer networks."

Given "Let's Play" is a common term that has long been employed by YouTubers, streamers and other video producers -- one Sony neither coined nor popularized -- this attempt to lay claim over the phrase seems like a bizarre overreach and isn't a particularly good look for the company.

In any event, the United States Patent and Trademark Office has refused Sony's application, citing the "likelihood of confusion with" a previously registered trademark, "LP Let'z Play," giving Sony six months to make a case for itself and argue against the USPTO's decision on the matter.

One has to wonder whether the potential advantage Sony could gain by preventing competitors, such as Microsoft and Nintendo, from using the term (or whatever other reason drove the decision to apply for the trademark) is worth the inciting the rage of Let's Players and their communities.

Review: Pony Island

Posted: 10 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST

Over the last couple of years, some of my favourite games to come out of the indie scene have been the games that play around with expected genre conventions in new and interesting ways. From The Stanley Parable messing with player expectations of linearity and authorial authority to Undertale's systems for remembering past actions even if the player doesn't save, these games have seen wide critical acclaim as a result of flipping expected design elements on their head.

Pony Island popped up seemingly out of nowhere this past week and I really can't recommend it's unsettling brand of mechanical uncertainty highly enough. It's one of the most engaging games I have played in quite some time.
