Darren Nakamura's personal picks for Game of the Year 2015 Posted: 01 Jan 2016 08:00 AM PST As a site, we awarded our games of the year last month as a whole unit. Those are official; we came to them through a democratic process taking votes from managers, editors, and contributors. Sometimes democracy gets stuff wrong. Our overall Game of the Year went to Bloodborne, but you won't find that on my list. Nor will you find The Witcher 3, Metal Gear Solid V, or any of their ilk, because I didn't play those games. Maybe they're good. I don't know. What I do know are the following games and how much of an impact they had on me.
Friday Night Fights - Happer Nooo Yur! Posted: 01 Jan 2016 07:30 AM PST Dear lord it's bright. Worked till 6am, drank till 8 and back up at 12pm. Choices. Ugh. It's almost 1pm and I need to go back to work. At least it's Friday and it's a short, 4hr shift. It's the little things. Now excuse me, there's ham on my cat, and vomit in my shoe. I think I drew dicks on myself too... God, I'm an asshole.
When is no advertising the best advertising? Posted: 01 Jan 2016 07:00 AM PST [Art by Momoppi] Earlier this year, I booked Undertale creator Toby Fox for an appearance on Sup Holmes. Shortly before the show was set to air, he asked if it was OK if he canceled because he "hates answering interview questions." By this time, Undertale had become a huge hit, and we'd chatted on Twitter here and there about doing a special episode of the show where he didn't say a word, and other game devs like Tomm Hulett and Anthony Burch show up to talk about Undertale in his place. He wasn't up for that any more either. He wanted to spend the afternoon watching Youtube videos with his brother instead. You'd think that Toby might have developed a sizable ego after the success of his game, but when the time came for that ego to manifest itself, there was nothing to be seen. I get the sense that if I had said to him that he had to be on the show, that he didn't have a choice, that he would have showed up. At no time did he try to take control of our interaction. His ego was either non-present or nonexistent. I'm not sure which. This non-present or nonexistent ego has carried over into Undertale's non-present or nonexistent marketing campaign, and so far, it's worked.
| Remember the EarthBound-like YIIK? It's coming to Xbox One now too Posted: 01 Jan 2016 05:00 AM PST We haven't heard much about YIIK in a while, but thanks to a recent livestream from developer Ackk Studios, we now know that it's coming to the Xbox One. Previously it was only slated for the PC, PS4, Vita, and Wii U platforms. The studio is still on track for a March 2016 release date. Initially, it was slated for the fourth quarter of 2015, and according to their Twitter profile, it is "97% done." I'm kind of unsure on this, though I'm cautiously optimistic. I haven't liked the dialogue bits I've seen, but the gameplay looks like it could be fun, and channel that EarthBound spark that isn't all that prevalent anymore outside of the occasional homage. | Learn how nuclear mushroom clouds are made for Fallout 4 Posted: 01 Jan 2016 04:00 AM PST If you make it your goal to learn one thing per day, the above video is a great way to kick things off for the New Year. Simonschereibt over on YouTube decided to break down the science of digital mushroom clouds, explaining how they are animated with evidence from multiple games, including Fallout 4. He even digs into the textures to see how the developer did it, and how they basically touched up grey effects to craft the mushroom clouds. |
| Bummer: Umihara Kawase de-listed from Steam following studio closure Posted: 01 Jan 2016 03:30 AM PST Throughout 2015 you may remember me touching on the concept of game preservation often. Over the years, as the digital arena slowly increases its grasp on physical media, I've gotten increasingly worried. I'm not opposed to a digital future in theory (I prefer it in some cases, like shooters, where I can just load it up instantly for a few minutes at a time), but the fact that games can outright disappear from marketplaces is troubling. In most cases you can get them back if you already purchased them, but in other more rare instances, they're gone forever. That sad fate fell upon the Umihara Kawase series recently, as they were de-listed from Steam following the collapse of publisher Agatsuma Entertainment (who has been operating since 1997). It's even more depressing when you realize that a few of these were added mere weeks ago. It's so weird, because Steam has a system that allows people to transfer games from their inventory, even though it's technically not for sale on an official level. As the digital era continues to grow, I hope that more publishers have backup plans for occurrences like this, so certain titles don't just go away forever. | Posted: 01 Jan 2016 03:00 AM PST You can't really fault Koei Tecmo for pushing back the 15th anniversary of Dynasty Warriors given what they've been working on in 2015. From Hyrule Warriors DLC to the 3DS port to Attack on Titan (their first PS4-centric project), they've had their hands full. But they promise next year they'll make it right, with a "big announcement." A complete reboot/re-telling of the series with a current-gen development focus could be cool. As a side note, it's interesting that the publisher is not counting the first actual Dynasty Warriors title, which was a fighting game released in 1997. Instead, it's starting its history from 2000, when the hack-and-slash oriented Dynasty Warriors 2 was introduced. Koei Tecmo [Game City.ne.jp via Gematsu] |
| PSA: Killer Instinct is Cross-Buy on PC, so your free Games With Gold download transfers Posted: 01 Jan 2016 02:30 AM PST Microsoft announced that Killer Instinct will feature Cross-Buy with the upcoming Windows 10 version earlier in 2015, but has since clarified recently that picking up the free Xbox One download in January will net you all of that content on PC. Starting later today, Microsoft is giving away Season 1 of the game complete with eight characters, some costumes, and a repackaging of the very first arcade iteration. While a lot of you out there are probably passing on this on account on not owning an Xbox One, go ahead and download it, so when the PC version does eventually come out, you'll have it. | MLG potentially sold 'substantially all' its assets to Activision Posted: 01 Jan 2016 01:58 AM PST Man, the eSports world is so much more interesting these days. With so many big-time publishers attempting to enter the market, Activision just up and did what everyone probably wanted to do all along -- it potentially bought one of the biggest players in the world. It has made the moves to scoop up MLG for a reported sum of $46 million, and acquired "substantially all" of its assets. The deal (which hasn't been filed or executed yet) took place on December 21, at which point MLG's Board of Directors approved the sale, and CEO Sundance DiGiovanni has been replaced by former CFO Greg Chisholm. Stockholders are apparently not pleased according to the eSports Observer, with one individual stating that he "got fucked" -- the sale was also reportedly approved without a stockholder's meeting, and the "majority" of the sum may simply be going towards paying off debts. Right now, the future of MLG is uncertain, but signs seem to point to the organization's dissolution. | Good news, collectors: The Skylanders amiibo are going to be sold separately Posted: 01 Jan 2016 01:00 AM PST [Update: It looks like the pair are going to be sold on 1/9 at GameStop -- there's no current word on what the stock looks like, but since they're being distributed by Activision, there's no doubt that it will be more plentiful than Nintendo's efforts. Note that this is technically both an amiibo and a Skylanders toy, and thus will work with both publisher's games (though for Nintendo, they'll be a standard Bowser or Donkey Kong figure). For months, the only way amiibo collectors have been able to get their hands on the Skylanders figures (Bowser and Donkey Kong) have been by way of the Starter Packs for SuperChargers. They've since come down in price to roughly $40 (or less) from $75 at launch, but that's still far too much if you're just looking for the amiibo and not the game. Thankfully, Skylanders Inquirer has discovered that they will be released separately, and will retail for $24.99. Why is it so high? Because it comes with a vehicle (even though most people just want the figure), and because....money. But there is a catch -- the Dark variants are still reportedly exclusive to the Starter Packs. Luckily I was able to acquire them by way of a friend and an awesome reader. Confirmed: Nintendo amiibo [Skylanders Inquirer] |
First 4 Figures teases an Alucard toy Posted: 01 Jan 2016 12:00 AM PST Although Castlevania, and Symphony of the Night in particular, get a lot of love, you don't see a whole lot of Alucard merchandise -- or at least, as much as I'd like. That's changing soon, as First 4 Figures is teasing their resin model of the Alucard toy on their Facebook page. As of right now they just have Dracula (the MercurySteam version) and Simon Belmont, so more Castlevania representation is great. First 4 Figures [Facebook]
Joe Parlock's personal picks for Game of the Year 2015 Posted: 31 Dec 2015 11:00 PM PST Bloody hell 2015 has been a fantastic year, hasn’t it? I started Destructoid in back April with this being my first regular position at a major video game site and my god has it been a good year to come into it. We’ve had a deluge of great games, both major AAA releases and from the indie scene. Of course, we’ve had a few duds (looking at you, Arkham Knight), and there’s been more than a few shitstorms (hey, Overkill), but overall this year has easily been one of the best years in gaming in a long, long time. So without any further ado, I give you the games I’ve enjoyed the most this year!
Yacht Club says finding a Shovel Knight amiibo 'shouldn't be a problem' Posted: 31 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST Like many Shovel Knight fans and amiibo collectors out there, I was dismayed to see pre-orders for the upcoming Shovel Knight amiibo sell out so quickly after being put up for offer on Amazon. According to Yacht Club Games, this may not portend of shortage issues to come. A Yacht Club rep has informed us that "There should be a good supply [of Shovel Knight amiibo] at retail for launch on January 8th, and it shouldn't be a problem finding them. And if it is a problem, there are big shipments coming in every week after that!" This particular Yacht Club rep went on to say that they're "...getting them from the store like everyone else. That's how much I trust they'll be there!" So far, the retail-ready boxed version of Shovel Knight has been relatively easy to find, so it stands to reason that the Shovel Knight amiibo may also end up being a common sight. It's nice to see the Yacht Club stand against instilling fear in consumers in order to create demand. That tactic may breed short term profit, but it leads to long term resentment and alienation in the end. Just as T.C. eventually had to tell Mona to get herself together and start treating him different, Nintendo is going to have to start making amiibo consistently easy to acquire if they want their fans to stay loyal.
Cblog End-of-Year Recaps 2015: Definitive Edition Posted: 31 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST [I'd like to thank all recappers, past and present, on their work recapping the cblogs. They give the community's blogs a second chance for people who tend to miss great stuff, whether they're hung over, working late, or just binged on a game too much. Also, kudos for this year's End-of-Year Recaps go to ShadeOfLight. The madness of the old gods that is composing this monster has touched me, Pixie, and now you too Shade. MADNESS I SAY! ~Strider] Hello again and welcome to the annual Cblog Recaps Year in Review! That's right: it's that time of year again when your faithful Recappers look back on a year of quality Cblogs to highlight the blog of the crop, the blog de la blog, the very best like no blog ever was. Before we get to that though, we would like to extend our thanks to the community managers who continue to keep us loose cannons in check, and to everyone who keeps the site running. Destructoid is a home away from home for a lot of us, so we're very thankful for every gear in the system.
Modders are bringing multiplayer to Just Cause 3 Posted: 31 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST If you expected the modders responsible for giving Just Cause 2 multiplayer to do the same thing for Just Cause 3, well, you aren't going to be disappointed. A month after the game's release, they are already far enough into production that there's a trailer offering an early glimpse at the mod. JC3-MP isn't available for download yet, and there's no ETA, but it's coming.
Dtoid Designs: Mario at the Movies Challenge Winners Posted: 31 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST Before the big ball drops tonight and we close out December and 2015, I must reveal the winners of this month's Dtoid Designs contest. For December, I issued a challenge to see what kinds of wonderful levels you could make based off of a movie. The response was deafening... Oh wait, I'm sorry I mean the response was silent as just seven people entered. While that kind of turnout might put a dour note on things, I'm happy to say the quality of this month's entries did not disappoint and I couldn't wait to tell you about the three levels selected as the best.
The Oculus Rift's Touch controllers need more time Posted: 31 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST The Oculus Rift's Touch controllers already weren't going to make it in time for the virtual reality headset's launch, but now they're even further off. Oculus VR expects to ship Touch in "the second half of 2016," noting that the final product will be "more comfortable, reliable, and natural." The Oculus Rift is still on for Q1 2016 and includes an Xbox One gamepad. We don't know how much it'll cost yet, but the company expects pre-orders for the device to open "very soon." My only exposure to the Touch controllers was in a "play room"-esque tech demonstration -- not something as fully realized as the Surgeon Simulator demo Zack tried -- but the experience was invigorating. It didn't take long at all before they felt, rather uncannily, like an extension of my hands and each individual finger. If I end up going the Rift route (I'm undecided until we know the price point for it and PlayStation VR), I'll spring for Touch. No question about it. Update on Oculus Touch Ship Date [Oculus]
Killer Instinct: Season 1 Ultra Edition is free with Gold Posted: 31 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST Oh, hey, look at that! One of January's Games with Gold offerings is up early. Killer Instinct: Season 1 Ultra Edition normally costs $39.99, but it's free to download with an Xbox Live Gold membership through January 31, 2016. This package unlocks eight characters (Jago, Sabrewulf, Glacius, Thunder, Sadira, Orchid, Spinal, and Fulgore) plus costumes and accessories. If you still need to, you can download the (also free) base game over here. Even if you aren't so keen on the new Killer Instinct, you may still want to get it anyway for the packed-in Killer Instinct Classic. So much Rare on one system!
Enjoy this fanmade Mario Maker clone on PC while it lasts Posted: 31 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST Anyone want to take bets on how quickly the cease and desist orders will come in for this one? Super Mario ReMaker is a fanmade effort to bring the delight of Super Mario Maker to PC fans. While still very much a work in process, you can download a demo of it now if you want to try it out for yourself. It's a little janky and rough around the edges, but so far it's shaping up to be a decent facsimile of the best game Nintendo has made in years. Of course, the ambitious creator behind ReMaker wants to do more than just imitate. The goal of ReMaker is to eventually correct the flaws of Super Mario Maker and reintroduce some notable omissions in the game such as a browsable level search system and slopes. That is, if Nintendo lets the project live that long. Despite a nice disclaimer on the starting screen for ReMaker encouraging fans to buy a copy of Super Mario Maker to show their support, it's hard to imagine Nintendo won't unleash the lawyers on this project sooner or later. My bet is on “sooner.” Someone's Building Mario Maker For PC [Kotaku]
Final Fantasy IX is releasing on PC and mobile next year Posted: 31 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST Square Enix's Japanese website has just announced that Final Fantasy IX (which should be subtitled Vivi and his Less Cool Friends) will be coming to PC and Smartphones soon. There's no set release date, but I'm hoping it's soon. Final Fantasy IX is probably my least-replayed game in the series, and I'm not quite sure why. I loved it at the time. And that chocobo treasure hunting mini-game! I'm looking forward to losing hours to that again. Final Fantasy IX Comes to PC and Smartphones! [Square Enix]
2015 recap: The ten most popular posts on Destructoid this year Posted: 31 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST Even though the tradition is exactly two years running at this point, I look forward to closing up the calendar year by writing about the most popular posts on Destructoid. It's no secret that we, Internet people as we are, have a vested interest in articles doing a lot of traffic. But, we also don't really care as much as you might think we do; we often forego the proven-to-work headline for one that we find funny (and probably no one else). So, this particular post serves as a nice little aggregation to see what really worked for us. More importantly, it gives me a good excuse to use a Mean Girls header. I should do that more often. All of us should do that more often. There's nothing here that's quite as heavy-hitting as last year's winner -- the new Call of Duty reveal (there rarely will be). Instead, it's a mix of editorial, news, offbeat stuff, and guides. We've thrown in the top five reviews separately since they're often behemoths that would entirely skew the results of this. Also included are five things that we just really enjoyed this year. It's our site and we're allowed to do that. Maybe you'll find the most popular posts of the year to be as interesting as we do. Maybe it'll be a nice walk down memory lane, a trip that starts in January and ends in December. Come stroll with us for just a few minutes.
Xbox One Elite controllers expected to be sparse through March 2016 Posted: 31 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST The Xbox Elite controller is pretty damn fantastic. At a pricepoint of $150 it's absurd for sure, but if you play your Xbox One (or use your PC) on a daily basis, it's worth it. Sadly, shortages are expected to continue throughout the new year. Here's the rub straight from Microsoft, by way of Tech Insider: "While the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller is sold out in many retailers around the world, we are working quickly to get more units in the hands of fans. We expect more units to arrive at retailers each week but supply may be limited through March 2016." Uh, okay. Apparently the outrage from fans that $150 was "too much" caused them to scale back production -- only to find out that more people actually wanted them. My guess is that people eventually started getting wise to the fact that they were actually good pads, and that they could work on PC, causing a surge. The hottest Xbox accessory this holiday won't return to stores until March 2016 [Tech Insider]
Nintendo Download: Molly Maggot Posted: 31 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST I try to stay positive during these roundups, but outside of one new game (Molly Maggot on Wii U), this week is absolutely abysmal. On Wii U there's the aforementioned new indie, following by 1080 Snowboarding on Virtual Console. That's literally it folks, there's no 3DS updates. It takes me back to a simpler (and worse) time where that would be the norm for the 3DS, early in its lifespan.
| Haunt your friend's dreams with this Kirby Hat Posted: 31 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST Based on the StreetPass Mii Plaza getup, Nintendo is going to distribute a real life Kirby hat early next year. It's only available in Japan for now, and will start hitting stores on February 25. I'm surprised it took this long, given the popularity of the Mii Plaza metagame -- maybe we'll see some real life Badge Arcades in Japan soon? Given the long reach of Kirby merch, you can probably expect this to come west at some point, though you can import it from Play-Asia for $30. | New Attack on Titan game has a free roaming mode Posted: 31 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST While I'm not a fan of the bloated and overhyped show, the concept of Attack on Titan is enough to keep me interested in the games. According to Famitsu, the game is going to be rather fully-featured too, with plenty of content that the Warriors games are known for. In addition to 10 playable characters (Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Krista, Sasha, Connie, Jean, Levi, Hange, and Erwin), the story will follow the events of the first season, and it will be easy to pickup if you've never seen the show or read the manga before. Additional story bits will be included though to expand on a few characters. The best part of the whole package though sounds like the "Investigation Outside the Walls" mode, where players can pick a character and go free roaming in the wild -- this seems like the grinding gametype to boost up your characters. Of course, the classic Warriors "Free" mode is in as well, where you can pick any mission with any character. Finally, fighting with allies to take down Titans is specifically noted as a semi-required tactic -- and those Titans may drop items or a swallowed soldier when defeated. As a reminder, this is the first game that Koei Tecmo is developing specifically for the PS4 -- instead of crafting PS3 first and upscaling, they'll actually be downscaling to the PS3. | The Gold Mega Man amiibo is back up at Best Buy Posted: 31 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST Shortly after the Gold Mega Man amiibo was unveiled, pre-orders sold out nearly everywhere online -- you still can't find it at places like Amazon. But late last night it seems like the package popped up on Best Buy, and it's still live as we speak. It'll run you an unreasonable $49.99, but will come with the $30 game, the $13 (MSRP) amiibo, two 3DS themes, a soundtrack, and postcards. Mega Man Legacy Collection [Best Buy] |
The Xbox One might be getting a 'Lightweight' model Posted: 30 Dec 2015 10:00 PM PST You know the Xbox One? Yeah, that decently powered AAA game console that plays huge, epic scale games? According to a rumor currently circulating, you might soon see an Xbox One that does considerably less. According to writer Brad Sams at Petri, who claims to have spoken to internal sources at Microsoft, there's a Lightweight Xbox One coming in 2016, much more in line with the Apple TV in terms of design and power. "I have heard from internal sources that the company is considering plans for a lightweight Xbox One that may only be for Windows store games and would compete with the Apple TV, but it's not clear if these plans have been scrapped." The rumor also suggests that the box would be considerably cheaper than the standard Xbox One, and would be releasing in the second half of the year. So, would you buy an Xbox One branded Apple TV competitor?
Update: The Shovel Knight amiibo was available for pre-order at Amazon Posted: 30 Dec 2015 01:26 PM PST [Update: All gone! We'll keep you appraised if Shovel Knight returns to Amazon or Best Buy.] Recently, I purchased a Silver Mario amiibo just because I wanted to say that I had completed Wave 3. Help me. Anyway, the Shovel Knight amiibo is currently up for pre-order at Amazon, and you should probably jump on that when you get a chance. We haven't really had to worry about amiibo scarcity for a while, but I've got a bad feeling about this one. If you're worried about quality, I've held the figure in question back at PAX Prime. It's super neat, and I'm excited to own one regardless of whether I have the game on Wii U/3DS.
This sure seems like a new Valve ARG Posted: 30 Dec 2015 11:30 AM PST Valve has seemingly slipped an alternate reality game (ARG) into the 2015 Winter Steam Sale. Over the past week, users have been searching for what they perceived to be clues all across Steam and in Valve's still-unraveling Northpole Noir web comic. Many of them have congregated on a new subreddit, /r/steamsaledetectives. Today, that collaboration led to some interesting developments which suggest, yes, this actually is a full-blown ARG. Notably, a hidden password prompt was discovered on the Steam store. To make it visible, go to an individual game's store listing (while using a web browser, not the Steam client) and type "search" -- then hit enter. You should see an entry field pop up. Super weird, right? Now, using that method, bring up the password prompt on the Hitman: Codename 47 page. Type in "94050999014715" and hit enter. That should result in a dialog box that says "ic/4f21ca7" which, somehow, user DevinWatson determined relates to the URL for the Winter Sale comic. Combining that text string with the Northpole Noir URL redirects to a waveform audio file with a short message: "I was on the right track. I could feel it. Tomorrow, I was going to search again." If this mystery ends up having a significant connection to one of Valve's games, that wouldn't be a first for the company, but I'm going to keep my expectations in check. It's better that way. Still, who knows what tomorrow will bring. I get the distinct sense this is only the beginning. The Steam sale doesn't end until January 4 at 10:00am Pacific. Welcome to 2016. [Via reddit]
Drifting through time: Arousal and gaming Posted: 30 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST [Image: BLUEamnesiac on DeviantArt.] [LinkSlayer readily admits what his formative years of discovering the fairer sex was like through what else but Final Fantasy. After all, Final Fantasy X-2 was about adding a bit of a sexy flair to the returning turn-based combat gals, so who's to say it wasn't successful? ~Strider] Puberty is an awkward time for everyone, is it not? Why am I growing hair? What is my body doing? When do I become a pupa? Additionally, I feel as though all the new stimuli we are exposed to in this day and age has created a cornucopia of research for psychologists and related fields. What do these have to do with gaming? Well, to a young boy with an interest in girls, a poster of a video game character showing the right amount of skin might just be enough to get them to buy the game. A particularly lewd drawing of a girl in cat ears may influence them to search out more of the same.
