Lawyer adventure Aviary Attorney hits Steam soon

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 02:30 PM PST

Can a game like Aviary Attorney carve out a niche for itself? I'm hopeful!

This 19th century adventure starring a man who is a lawyer and also a bird intrigued enough people to earn funding through Kickstarter at the beginning of the year. It's not in my wheelhouse, exactly, but I appreciate it for sticking with an out-there premise and underutilized art style.

Developer Sketchy Logic is nearly ready for the Steam release. It's set for December 18, 2016.

Watch this Fallout 4 radioactive hoops master do his thing

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 01:30 PM PST

Defend the House puts on a post-apocalyptic basketball clinic in this short video. With some intricate set-ups, nerves of steel, and a little help from his friend Jet, this wastelander manages to finagle Fallout 4's clumsy physics engine to sink some mind-boggling baskets.

Some might say this is a waste of time, but it seems like an excellent survival strategy to me. Getting cranked out of your mind on performance enhancing drugs and mastering trick shots seems like the perfect to stave off the nihilistic hopelessness and inevitable suicidal depression of living in the wastelands.

Sceptile confirmed for Pokken Tournament

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 12:30 PM PST

The grassy lizard Pokémon Sceptile has been confirmed for the upcoming Pokken Tournament via the Japanese trailer above. As someone who played Pokémon competitively for a while, this game makes no sense to me. How does a grass type destroy a water type and an ice type?

I'm more excited about Farfetch'd being in Pokken Tournament, because it is one of the best of the pocket monsters and if you think otherwise, you're wrong. You'll see the light of the truth when the game launches for the Wii U in North America in the second quarter of 2016.

Street Fighter V has a 'Hot Package' in Japan

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST

I'm not sure what's up with Ryu's eyes in this art for the "Hot Package" edition of Street Fighter V, but I am fond of the way his hair flows together. It's majestic.

This Japan-only bundle comes with alternate costumes that are available here in the West as pre-order bonuses. It'll be out on February 18, 2016 for 8,990 yen.

Booby games publisher Marvelous' YouTube account suspended

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST

[Update: Marvelous' channel has been restored.]

Marvelous Entertainment, the publisher of many booby games such as the Senran Kagura series and the upcoming lesbians-that-turn-into-weapons game Valkyrie Drive, has had its YouTube account suspended. According to the message displayed where the YouTube channel used to be, "This account has been suspended due to multiple or severe violations of YouTube's policy against spam, gaming, misleading content, or other Terms of Service violations."

There has been speculation that the suspension is due to many of the characters in these games being under the age of consent while shown in revealing outfits and performing light sexual activities, but currently YouTube's reasoning is unknown.

PlayStation Network's holiday sale is up

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST

Darren has been talking up Tales from the Borderlands for months now. I don't care much for Borderlands, but I have finally followed his advice and downloaded "Telltale's best series to date."

What got me? A sale, of course! The first full season is $7.50 on PlayStation 4 right now (and it's only $3.75 with a PlayStation Plus membership).

This is the first week of the PlayStation Store holiday sale, so there are a bunch of other discounts on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita titles. Note: if you're a PS Plus subscriber, you'll see even better prices.

New Persona 5 plot points differentiate it from previous games

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST

Game Informer has new Persona 5 details you won't find anywhere else, well, except for here, or any other place you're reading them in summation, thanks to an interview with director Katsura Hashino.

Hashino explains how the Persona 5 crew, all of whom feel like they lack a place in this world, "throws themselves into the fray," versus past games' teams getting wrapped up in some shady business, "when they get a hold of the Isekai-Navi [Japanese version] which allows them to enter another world and steal the malicious intent from others' hearts." They become "phantom thieves," "and throw themselves headlong into helping others and reforming society with their own hands." Largely this against adults, the frequent bane of teens, but "they draw the attention of an even greater enemy."

The team has, "added a nuance of brash audacity" to the new protagonist who is otherwise Mr. Calm, Cool, & Collected from the past two games, "since he’s something of a roguish antihero."

Nominees for Destructoid's Best Vita Game of 2015

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST

Oh, hey there reader, you've just caught me at that time of year where I and the other Destructoid editorial staff are beginning the long and often vicious process of putting together our Game of the Year awards. First come the long lists, then the short lists, then the rounds of voting before a winner is finally revealed.

Every year at Destructoid we review countless video games for every console and platform under the sun, giving them scores that reflect the opinion of a single writer on staff and moving on. As the year draws to a close, we put aside all critical discussion and begin to follow our guts. We all played a bunch of video games, this is the bit where we try and pick which we liked most as a site.

Here are some of the Vita games we loved the most in 2015. Now comes the part of the year where the Destructoid staff force all of these games to quietly fight to the death until we pick out a winner.

I'm warming up to Lego Marvel's Avengers

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST

Now that TT Games has begun showing more locations and characters in Lego Marvel's Avengers, I'm starting to come around.

Officially, the open-world locales are Asgard, Barton Farm, Malibu, New York City, "S.H.I.E.L.D. Base Exterior," Sokovia, South Africa, and Washington, D.C., and for characters, uh, I'm unsure. But today's press release says Fin Fang Foom is in it, and he "can grow to the size of buildings." Cool.

Still, I already spent a silly amount of time with Lego Marvel Super Heroes, which is also set in NYC, and I need to put some distance between Lego games to fully enjoy them. I'm in no rush.

Star Wars Battlefront is now 33% off at GameStop

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST

Looks like there are plenty of Battlefront copies at GameStop. As part of its weekly sale, the retailer has Star Wars Battlefront on all platforms at a big fat $20 off. (That's 33% for those without a calculator handy.)

The Deluxe Editions are also on sale at $49.99, but we're not sure if it's worth the extra $10 to pick up. Heck, you can probably argue Battlefront at $39.99 is iffy (since we're still on the sidelines and all the hardcore fans have already bought and uh, "finished" the game).

For those on PC, note that there's actually no physical copy provided. The "physical copy" GameStop ships has no disc in the packaging and only a download card with the Origin product code on it.

Yep.

Yay or nay?

Next wave of Animal Crossing amiibo head to Europe on January 29

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST

Nintendo of Europe has confirmed it -- the Mr. Resetti, Blathers, Kicks, and Celeste amiibo will all arrive on January 29 in the UK region.

This newest wave also includes Lucas, and nothing listed here will be a store exclusive in the US (that we know about). Other confirmed Animal Crossing amiibo include Timmy & Tom Nook (Target exclusive), Rover, and Kapp'n, but none of those have dates yet.

If you're curious, here is the full list of confirmed amiibo so far, going throughout March 2016.

Review: Girls Like Robots

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST

Girls like robots. It's the name of the game, and it's the first piece of information given. Most of the time spent is in laying out seating arrangements of emotional square people in an attempt to maximize happiness.

Girls like robots. Robots like girls. Nerds like girls, but girls don't like nerds (sigh). Everybody likes pie; nobody likes being set on fire. I like the premise, but it ends up being a bit dull to play.

Would you buy a PS2 Mega Man game on PS4?

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST

It's now possible to bring PS2 games to the PS4, though you will have to buy them all over again -- even if you own them already.

With that said, Rockman Corner has posed a question for its community, noting that Capcom may be interested in finding out what PS2 Mega Man games people would buy. Evidently the Collections (both Classic and X) aren't an option. In that case, your choices are pretty slim, with X7, X8, and Command Mission.

I know Protodude, so when he says that "certain parties will be watching this post," I believe him. Fan direction has influenced Capcom's porting decisions in the past, specifically for Mega Man (with constant polls and the like), so there's a good chance this could actually happen.

Review: Gamevice for the iPhone

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST

Mobile gaming is becoming closer and closer to console gaming, and with the line thinning the only thing missing is phones coming with dedicated controllers.

That is where the Gamevice comes in, to try to fill that hole by turning your iPhone 6 into a fully-fledged gaming console. While it does the job well, it certainly isn't without some minor flaws.

Phil Spencer: GoldenEye 64 rights are 'challenging,' has looked at it 'many times'

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST

This week, Phil Spencer mused on the idea of working with Nintendo to bring Minecraft to the Wii U, stating that it has been a positive experience. It's a noble partnership of sorts, but people really want to know if this can lead to more releases down the road -- specifically, the elusive GoldenEye 64.

When asked, Spencer noted, "GoldenEye rights are so challenging, looked at this many times. Lot's of different parties to work with, we've always given up." It's always interesting to see Spencer talk about the industry.

GoldenEye has always been a notorious property. Electronic Arts once had the James Bond license, but abandoned it in 2006 for Activision to pick up. Right now, its seemingly in limbo after a series of failed game releases -- the latest developer that noted interest was Telltale.

Nominees for Destructoid's Best 3DS Game of 2015

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST

The 3DS has gone through a tremendous change since its launch. While Nintendo did its best to completely fumble its initial year with a weak launch lineup, paltry Virtual Console offerings, and hardly any third-party support, it gained quite a bit of strength over time. Now there are hundreds of classics on the portable to choose from, including digital titles on the eShop, which is an immense upgrade from the horrid DSiWare storefront.

Yes, every year I look forward to the 3DS' upcoming releases above a few consoles of mine, and this year had some great games, albeit with a few remakes on the pile. While Monster Hunter 4 is obviously a standout, and one of the best Monster Hunter games in some time, Yo-Kai Watch stole my heart with its charming gameplay and strong roots in Japanese culture.

Here are the nominees for Destructoid's Best 3DS Game of 2015.

Star Wars Battlefront's Jakku DLC is now out for all for free

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST

If you didn't pre-order Star Wars Battlefront, you can now download the Battle of Jakku DLC, which comes with a new map and several modes. There are still four more DLC packs coming, which will be a bit more substantial and part of the $50 Season Pass.

The DLC sets up the film with events that take place 30 years before it, but you can pretty much get that gist from the promotional material. I think Jordan said it best -- it's..."okay."

Microsoft wants to make it possible to buy Xbox 360 games directly on Xbox One

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST

As I've said many times, Microsoft's Xbox 360 backward compatibility feature on Xbox One is pretty awesome. It's been very smooth so far, with one caveat -- you need to purchase Xbox 360 titles online, or on the actual 360 marketplace. Right now, you can't actually buy legacy content on the Xbox One.

Given how well Microsoft's online storefront works it's not that big of a deal, but it would be nice to see one day. Thankfully, Phil Spencer has confirmed that it is in the works, noting on Twitter that they've "heard this request" and that they are "working on a solution."

While there's no excuse for Microsoft's horrible DRM-laden strategy out of the gate, competition is a good thing, and I'm glad they're still in the console market to some degree.

Gravity Rush 2 DLC confirmed, as well as Souls-like online element

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST

I feel like I've been talking about a ton of criminally underrated games lately, and Gravity Rush is no exception. It was fantastic from start to finish for me, and I even enjoyed the inoffensive DLC packs. I'll be there day one for the HD remake and the sequel, but these new details for the latter have me even more pumped.

For starters, the game will have a Souls-esque multiplayer element. Players can access hints by way of treasure boxes, and time attack modes are "under consideration." There are a ton of other bits that have come to light, like the confirmation of DLC (that will be "different" from the first game), a photo mode with Twitter support, more costumes, worlds that are "2.5" times bigger than the original, and the possibility to play as Raven (that's still being finalized).

There are a lot more details available, but the anime that links both games is also intriguing. I'm really glad that Sony was able to make this into a franchise of sorts after all -- it deserves it. Their ultimate goal is to have Gravity Rush 2 remembered for "a decade or two" after it launches. I'll probably be playing the original into my elderly years.

Nintendo partners up with Mercedes-Benz again for Super Mario Maker

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 02:15 AM PST

Haha, okay.

Following up its partnership with Mercedes-Benz for Mario Kart 8 cars and commercials, Nintendo has announced that there will be a new Mercedes GLA "costume" for Super Mario Maker. But completing a special event course, you'll pick up the free bit of DLC for use in the 8-bit mode.

In the press release there's lots of marketing speak from Mercedes and Nintendo execs alike about how "Mercedes-Benz recognizes the ability to create fun courses and share them with others," but I couldn't read that with a straight face.

Maybe Mercedes signed up for a multi-game deal, and Nintendo was like "hey, have some Super Mario Maker content?" Who knows, either way this whole partnership can be largely ignored, given that the DLC is free.

Bethesda just opened up a new Montreal studio with a mobile and console focus

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST

Bethesda Game Studios has announced it is adding another base of operations in the decidedly non-Bethesda area of Montreal, Quebec, to "expand its development capabilities in console, PC, and mobile gaming." Note that last bit -- given the success of Fallout Shelter, they're no doubt looking to jump into that market as soon as possible.

The move was brought about by the fact that they already worked with "very talented developers" there, as noted by executive producer Todd Howard. Apparently the team is already 40 strong, and will focus on console and mobile development specifically for now, managed by developer Yves Lachance.

They are also hiring, if you're interested.

Former Square Enix exec: Konami did wrong by Kojima

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 01:30 AM PST

Yoichi Wada, former Square Enix president, has spoken out against Konami's recent treatment of Hideo Kojima. Given all of the hubbub surrounding his forced exit from the company, including the fact that he was barred from accepting an award for his own game at The Game Awards, it seems like enough is enough for Wada.

He noted this week on Facebook that he "can't believe this cruel treatment," and that either way you slice it, "this is a negative for [Konami's] business." He expands on that point, stating that "going out of your way to make enemies with the world has no meaning."

I wish Kojima the best of luck with whatever he has planned next, whenever his non-compete clause runs out.

Review: SteamWorld Heist

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST

SteamWorld Dig is a criminally underrated game. Although some were quick to judge its short length, it's the perfect thing to pick up and play at the drop of a hat, and the pacing is basically perfect.

Heist is a completely different experience, instead focusing on RPG elements and strategic gameplay, which inherently boost the total playtime involved. While it's not as memorable as Dig, I'm still cracking away at it a week later and having fun.

Before 2015 ends, Nintendo has another surprise in store for us -- another Nintendo Direct. As previously announced, this one will focus on Super Smash Bros., and will take place on December 15 at 5PM ET.

So many fans have speculated as to what this update could entail, but the most popular rumor is that Cloud and the Midgar stage would be released after the presentation. Of course, more DLC characters could also be announced as a result of the fan poll.

As a reminder, this is the confirmed last ever Smash-centric Direct.

Boo: Minecraft Wii U will not support GamePad item management

Posted: 09 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST

Huh? Well this is a kick in the teeth.

Speaking to a fan on Twitter, Mojang's director of creative communications Owen Hill recently confirmed that the upcoming Wii U Edition of Minecraft will not support item management by way of the GamePad. In other words, off-TV play is in, but you can't actually use the GamePad in a manner that would make the Wii U port unique in any way.

We also haven't heard of support for a second player, by way of split-screen, to use the GamePad either (like Hyrule Warriors). For as late as this port is, it seems bare-bones -- pretty much everyone who wants Minecraft already has it. I wonder how much muscle Microsoft uses in regards to the inclusion of extra features on other platforms.

R. Mika's butt slap was removed in Street Fighter V because it would make people 'uncomfortable'

Posted: 08 Dec 2015 11:00 PM PST

For a month now, fans have been speculating in regards to why Capcom would remove R. Mika's Critical Art butt slap animation from Street Fighter V, after already debuting footage for it.

Now, by way of UOL Jogos, we know Capcom's side. Evidently producer Yoshinori Ono noted that they didn't make the change due to "external influences" or pressure. Instead, it was an internal decision because they wanted "the biggest possible number of people to play," and that they don't want something in the game that would be "uncomfortable."

It's such a weird thing to me, because R. Mika's butt is still very visible, she just doesn't lightly tap it a few times per match. Would Square Enix remove Rikku's butt slap taunt from Final Fantasy X if it were made today? I think most of the people that feel so uncomfortable that they would stop playing wouldn't play in the first place.

The fifth deal in Sony EU's 12 Deals of Christmas promotion will bring you discounts for PES 2016 on the PS4.

From now until 11.59pm tomorrow, you can grab a standard digital version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 for €29/£25 (was €60), or the Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 Anniversary Edition for €35/£30 (was €70).

People are throwing money at the Psychonauts 2 Fig campaign

Posted: 08 Dec 2015 08:00 PM PST

The Psychonauts 2 Fig crowdfunding campaign has raised over $2 million.

At the time of writing, 13,630 backers have raised $2,121,471, which means 64 percent of the $3.3M has already been achieved with 34 days of the campaign still left to go.

Double Fine also recently announced Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, a virtual reality experience made exclusively for the PlayStation VR platform, at the PlayStation Experience.

Rhombus of Ruin tells the story of what happens after the events of the original Psychonauts, which left players on a cliffhanger, bridging the gap between the original and its upcoming sequel.

If you've yet to support the campaign -- which gives backers the opportunity to share the profits of the project -- there's 34 days to go! You'll need to cough up $500 before you'll see any return on your investment though...

Nethack, a roguelike from 1987, just had its first update in 12 years

Posted: 08 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST

While Rogue is commonly seen as where the roguelike genre got its start, there’s another game that is arguably just as influential to its formation: Nethack. Originally released way back in 1987, Nethack helped pave the way for the modern popularity of roguelikes, roguelites, rogue-like-likes, faux-likes, and whatever else you want to call them.

Now 28 years after release, and 12 years since its last major update, Nethack 3.6.0 has been released. Unfortunately, this new update doesn’t add much in the way of major gameplay changes. However, it makes a few necessary changes to allow the developers to expand the game further in the future, paving the way for bigger and hopefully more frequent updates.

The update also includes a nice tribute to Sir Terry Pratchett, who sadly passed away earlier this year and was a big fan of Nethack. His Discworld books inspired the creation of the in-game Tourist class, so the more substantial tribute full of Discworld quotes is just lovely.

It looks like we’re going to be hearing a lot more about Nethack going forward. Considering how much of a role the game played in shaping one of the most popular genres today, that's pretty dang exciting!
