Day of the Tentacle Remastered's slick interface works flawlessly Posted: 06 Dec 2015 01:00 PM PST When we learned at the PlayStation Experience keynote that Day of the Tentacle Remastered was releasing March 2016, I wrote that it had been twenty years since I had played the original. That would put me at the tender, still-primarily-eating-dinosaur-shaped-chicken-nuggets age of five years old. Ten minutes with Double Fine's remaster at PSX was enough to remind me that I remember absolutely nothing about the original aside from vague recollections of the characters' designs. When I had Hoagie, the portly roadie character, talk to a mummy a funk punk folk polka house grunge band, I knew I had to jump back in and give this a playthrough. Though I first assumed the PC version would be the way to go, the PS4 control scheme worked much more intuitively than I would have expected. The left stick is used as a cursor. Highlighting an object and pressing the square button opens a radial verb wheel where you can choose such options as opening, talking, or walking. Since the original had all of the verbs on a bottom HUD, the wheel frees up screen real estate and helps for a better aspect ratio. Day of the Tentacle Remastered's new, cleaner aesthetic looks great in motion, and not at all like a filter haphazardly smeared over the original's pixels. However, if you have a craving for Ye Olde Pixels, at any time you can tap the touch pad to instantly convert the game to the older look. The old UI is also accessible so you can play it exactly as LucasArts intended so many years ago. This isn't exactly a comfortable way to play (analog sticks just take more time than a normal mouse inherently), but the option is generous and appreciated. I walked away from Day of the Tentacle Remastered curious and ready to crack it open this coming March. I already need more Hoagie in my life. |
Final Fantasy VII Remake will be broken up into episodes Posted: 06 Dec 2015 12:30 PM PST After a divisive gameplay reveal at PlayStation Experience (looks cool, I'll play it), we're getting word from the Square Enix that the Final Fantasy VII Remake will be "told across a multi-part series." We don't know how many episodes, or how often they'll release. I expect some uproar over this, but breaking it down into chunks opens up the possibility of the game coming out sooner than we expected. Of course, the spacing between the episodes could be maddening for some. What'cha'y'all think? |
All those PS2 games run great on PS4, though they might be rougher than you remember Posted: 06 Dec 2015 12:30 PM PST PS2 times were amazing. I mean, that's the era of that wild Clover clutch I never stop talking about (Okami, God Hand, etc). So news that the PlayStation 4 would be able to emulate PlayStation 2 games? Sweet! You can't use PS2 discs or PS2 Classics? They're all upwards of $10? Less sweet. |
Dying Light: Enhanced Edition will free for owners of the base game (minus the expansion) Posted: 06 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST Chris liked Dying Light well enough, and I did too, back at the lovely Rely on Horror. I haven't played it since it released earlier this year, but the way Techland is handling the new Enhanced Edition is compelling me to jump back in. Anyone who currently owns the game will get access to a host of new changes that are coming. Here's a list of some of the coming improvements:
...Which is all stuff that Dying Light could sorely use. If you don't already own the game, you can get the Dying Light: The Following - Enhanced Edition, which includes the base game and the coming expansion (for which Brett detailed the recent price hike here), as well as the litany of aforementioned new stuff. I also had a chance to talk to Techland's Maciej Binkowski about the expansion, which you'll see either later tonight or tomorrow. |
PSA: That clear liquid at PlayStation Experience is not breath spray Posted: 06 Dec 2015 11:45 AM PST Upon entering PlayStation Experience, there was a chance to get a Sony goodie bag that has items enabling you to further advertise its brand. There's a beanie, a shirt, a poster, and a clear plastic spray bottle with the Sony logo emblazoned on the side. THIS IS NOT A MINTY SPRAY FOR YOUR MOUTH. A dude in front of me made that mistake yesterday and went into a fit of coughing. He couldn't stop, and made his way over to the bathroom, where I assume he vomited up all of his San Franciscan cuisine. Be careful out there, folks. |
Is there space for Ratchet & Clank? Posted: 06 Dec 2015 11:30 AM PST Sometimes websites make you click to the next "page" when reading a long article, or embed things in galleries instead of vertically down a page. This is either anachronistic print hold over or shrewd pageview maximization, but it is always silly, because the internet is endless and all we have is space. So it's also silly to wonder if we have space for Ratchet & Clank, because there is space for all games, but we are in a generation and a half that has seemed so compressed as to what's viable, doubled down into genre conventions and game styles (MOBA!). And it's not like Ratchet & Clank didn't stem from that kind of hammering into shape, itself a product of the mascot era and 3D action platformer era. It's just that those things -- often, those characters -- have waned. Spyro just sells other toys. Naughty Dog moved on to cartoon humans (Uncharted) and more somber humans (Last of Us). Ratchet & Clank, meanwhile, just didn't seem to have the oomph on the PS3 that it did on the PS2, even if most of the releases stayed solid and gorgeous. That's what the PS4 origin tale is, too. |
Review: Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours Posted: 06 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST The Darius series may not be as recognized as competing space shooters such as R-Type and Gradius, but it deserves its spot alongside those series as the best shooters of all time. This latest iteration packs in an enhanced arcade port that can be played with up to four players and a brand new single-player campaign, but for a steep price. Unfortunately, instead of providing quality content, Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours is filled to the brim with repetitive filler to justify its price point. |

Lots of games may have just had their Steam releases leaked Posted: 06 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST NeoGAF has caught wind of a whole load of leaked games potentially coming to Steam. Some of the games were added as potential topics in Steam’s Help Desk support system, while others have been mentioned in changes to Steam’s registry and were picked up through SteamDB, which is often a pretty reliable way of telling what is and isn’t coming to the platform. There are some very interesting titles popping up in the thread on NeoGAF:
Big Steam registry leaks like this are never 100% accurate, as ports can cease development, or the entries may simply be placeholders. However, they’ve also been right pretty damn regularly too, so don’t disregard the entire list just yet. As usual, these aren’t confirmed by the developers and publishers, and we won’t know exactly what’s coming until they say. Either way, the idea of former console exclusives on PC is pretty exciting. Games were made for boys because games were sold as toys? Posted: 06 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST A lot of hoopla has been flopping around in recent months about games that focus on boobs. Specifically, some of these games are either not being brought out of Japan, or are having their "boob features" diminished upon release in the U.S. and Europe. This has also happened with a few games that feature crotches, but for the most part, it's a boob problem. Games that focus on sex and/or boobs can be great, but it looks like they may be too risky at the moment for Japanese game publishers like Nintendo, Capcom, and Koei Tecmo, all of whom are currently struggling to stay on top in the West. Though there are plenty of men and women in every country who love a bit of cheesecake, it's also plain to see that if you sex up a game "too much" for your given culture, you're at risk of shrinking your audience. In Japan, you can buy sexy dakimakura (love pillows) at the local drug store, while in the U.S., Playboy magazine has decided to stop publishing pictures of naked ladies. Different cultures have different standards for how much sex is "too much," and fine tuning a game/movie/magazine so that it's just sexual enough to maximize its marketability in a given region is something AAA publishers spend a lot of time and money on. TruTV show Adam Ruins Everything has taken a look at how this brand of finely tuned sex and gender specific marketing has come to define games and gamers in the eyes of many, and why that definition may be changing. It's far from an extensive look at the topic, but it manages to pack a lot of interesting information and cute jokes into short period of time. If you want to read more about why toys often employ split-gender marketing techniques, this old essay on How To Not Suck At Game Design is a good start. |
Did the Star Citizen trailer at the Game Awards restore anyone's faith? Posted: 06 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST I'm a lapsed believer. Two years ago, I was all about Star Citizen. You would have been hard pressed to find someone more excited by the idea of a galaxy spanning rough and tumble space sim than me (well, maybe those crazy people who went out and spent $2.5K on a virtual carrier were more excited than me, but they're out of their damned minds). I would love nothing more than to play a game that merges the scope and player focused political machinations of EVE with the ship to ship combat of Elite Dangerous. I want to see a big-budget, crowd-funded PC exclusive space sim succeed just to prove to publishers that there is an audience for that kind of game. Hell, I wanted it to do well if for no other reason than to read more of those goofy space-ship brochures they use to sell pre-order ships. But my enthusiasm for Star Citizen has dwindled over the past two years, to the point where I feel like a sucker for buying the entry level pack back in 2013. |
Tony Hawk 5 gets a massive patch that adds content, fixes bugs Posted: 06 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST For roughly two months, Tony Hawk 5 has been plagued with bugs, from online connectivity to fundamental gameplay flaws. Finally, developer Robomodo has pushed a patch this month that rectifies some of the problems, while adding two additional levels and a few quality of life tweaks. Even though this patch does fix some issues based on my testing, it doesn't wholly make up for some of the other shortcomings, like uninspired mission and level designs. In the end, I really wanted to like Tony Hawk 5, but a complete lack of polish brought it down. I hope this isn't the end for the franchise -- Activision needs to give it another go with another developer before it trashes it. Check out the full patch notes below. |
Sam Lake teases an Alan Wake themed easter egg within Quantum Break Posted: 06 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST It's no secret that Remedy's magnum opus, Alan Wake, left an ocean sized hole in my heart. Now, nearly five years after disappearing into the Dark Place, Sam Lake has teased Alan's whereabouts with the following tweet. It's great to see Alan again (even as a possibly washed up corpse), but what's even more exciting is the implication that these two series exist within the same shared universe. Max Payne already kinda-sorta exists in Alan's world, and if you roped him into Quantum Break it would finally explain all of his bullet-time shenanigans (too bad Rockstar owns him now). Only time will tell if this is just a simple nod to the fandom, or if there will be a deeper connection between Remedy's previous games than that. |
$289 PlayStation 4 now available (yep another $10 cheaper) Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:00 PM PST Remember when Sony announced that there will be two $300 PlayStation 4 bundles? Well the deals are now arriving, and in fact over at eBay you can find a PS4 Battlefront bundle $10 cheaper at $289.99. Update: OOS, but Best Buy's $299 Uncharted bundle deal now comes with a free copy ofDestiny: The Taken King Legendary Edition. The discounted PS4 consoles will run through December 19th, though we suspect a $300 price tag may be the norm come Q1 2016. For the eBay deal linked above, the retailer in question is Antonline (an authorized Sony reseller) and their deal will run until the 15th or until sold out. We've been told that there's 4,000 units available so its doubtful to last for more than a few days. Tax in CA/GA only and you'll get the full warranty. If Star Wars: Battlefront isn't your cup of tea, the only other discounted PS4 would be the Uncharted Collection bundle - which is also available at Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop, and Amazon. Also of note, if you need a new game with your PS4, Best Buy is running a B2G1 free promo. Game deals from Dealzon. Sales help support Destructoid. |
