Playing as a wicked witch Beetleborg ballerina in Sony Santa Monica's Bound Posted: 05 Dec 2015 01:00 PM PST While, maybe, I won't find corroboration in my headline, those are the allusions I was drawn to playing the newly announced game from Sony Santa Monica and Plastic (Linger in Shadows, Datura), Bound. You play as a ballerina, which brings with it an almost initially off-putting aloofness and elegance. Think the White Swan from Basically Perfect Blue. That near haughtiness combined with the lack of a face (thanks to the Big Bad Beetleborgs helmet) and greenish Margaret Hamilton skin and, really, what other comparison am I supposed to draw?
Team Fortress 2 is getting a bunch of Batman inspired items Posted: 05 Dec 2015 11:30 AM PST Who said Halloween was over? Team Fortress 2 will soon have a new line of community made items inspired by Batman: Arkham Knight that will let your favorite blood thirsty mercenaries dress up as various heroes and villains from the world of Batman. I gotta be honest, The Burt Ward -esque Bat Backup skin for the Scout is just dumb enough to do it for me. These items are the winners of a Warner Bros. sponsored community contest that was held back in October when Arkham Knight was re-re-released on Steam. Maybe by way of apology, some of these items, such as the Fear Monger hood for the Pyro and the universally wearable Arkham Cowl, will be free to the poor souls who bought that version of Arkham Knight. Warner Bros. could probably use some positive publicity right about now. These items look pretty cool but I can't help but feel they really missed out on a good Cesar Romero Joker costume for the Spy. I know I would have spent three or four bucks to stab people in the back while sporting a mustache lazily smeared over with white makeup.
100ft Robot Golf is a sports game I can get behind Posted: 05 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST An email showed up in my inbox with the words "100ft Robot Golf," and I couldn't click it soon enough. That's the title of the next game from Roundabout studio No Goblin. It looks great. This isn't merely standard golf with giant robotic characters. They can wreck cities and anything else standing in their way, potentially to the detriment of competitors, just as you'd hope. They can play on the moon, or in a volcano, or wherever the hell they want, really, because they're robots.
PC Port Report: Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below Posted: 05 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST Hot on the heels of Hyrule Warriors, Koei Tecmo released Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below. It takes the long-running and well-loved Dragon Quest series of JRPGs and throws them straight into a Dynasty Warriors game. The Warriors hallmarks of massive hordes of enemies, a wide range of playable characters, and ridiculously long combos are introduced to a world and cast that Dragon Quest fans would be familiar with, and on the whole it manages to pull it off pretty dang competently. Heroes released in Japan back in February of this year, and eventually it managed to make its way west in October for the PS3 and PS4. Almost two months after the western console release, at last the game’s hit Steam with Dragon Quest Heroes: Slime Edition. Unfortunately while the game itself is pretty great, there are problems with the port that make me cautious to recommend it.
The Curse of Issyos is the Ninja Gaiden of Greek mythology Posted: 05 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST The Curse of Issyos is the newest game from indie developer Locomalito, known for releasing a ton of cool freeware games like Hydorah, Maldita Castilla, and L'Abbaye des Morts. He started this particular project back in 2010, but it was put on hiatus after he began working on Maldita Castilla. His newest project takes inspiration from 8-bit games of old like Ninja Gaiden, Vampire Killer, Rastan, and Kenseiden, as well as the special effects of Ray Harryhausen movies. If you're already familiar with Locomalito's games, then you probably know a bit about what to expect: 8-bit graphics, high levels of difficulty, a chiptune soundtrack by Gryzor87, and as always, it's entirely free!
| Animal Crossing amiibo Festival Drinking Games Posted: 05 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST
Driving, sex, and watching baseball: what do these three things have in common? They can all be made better with alcohol.* The same can be said for board games. From beer checkers to battle shots, mankind has found fun and exciting ways to combine our love of leisure activities with our favorite adult drinks. I am continuing that tradition with Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival. As we enter the holiday season, there’s a chance you’ll end up getting this game as a gift if you’ve ever once mentioned you play video games. It can come from an unsuspecting aunt, a grandparent who is trying to show they’re hip or a girlfriend who is clearly paying more attention to the guy she’s seeing behind your back. If you do end up with the game, don’t return it to the store. Instead, crack that baby open and sell the Isabelle amiibo on Amazon for $40. With that money in your pocket, head down to your local liquor store and stock up for a night of drunken debauchery with these problem-alcoholic-approved amiibo Festival drinking games. |

Will Double Fine do a Psychonauts HD remaster? Posted: 05 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST Earlier this year, Double Fine released a remastered version of Grim Fandango and the studio has a similarly spit-shined rendition of Day of the Tentacle ready for release in early 2016. With that in mind, during Destructoid's recent chat with Double Fine chief Tim Schafer regarding Psychonauts 2, we had to ask if the developer has any plans to release a polished version of the original game for modern platforms, so new audiences might have an opportunity to see what all the fuss is about before the hotly-anticipated follow-up launches in 2018. "We talk about this a lot," Schafer said, before mentioning every remaster has its unique challenges. "They’re all different," he added, "And Psychonauts would involve a lot of remodeling." However, despite the amount of work involved, Schafer hasn't ruled out the possibility just yet. "We’re trying to figure out what we can do," Schafer told us. "I wouldn’t say we’re never going to do that. If we can figure out a way that we can bring it to a new audience, we would love to have as many people play it as possible." That said, it sounds like a remaster of that scale is more than Double Fine can commit to at present. After contrasting what the studio has done with Day of the Tentacle Remastered with what it would need to do to spruce up Psychonauts, Schafer cut himself off and admitting "I guess I’m just complaining about how hard it would be." When we mentioned Sony is working on PlayStation 2 emulation software for PlayStation 4, Schafer called it "an exciting possibility," but wouldn't say if Double Fine would ever go that route. Psychonauts was initially published on the original Xbox, Windows PC, and PlayStation 2 in 2005. Since then it has been re-released digitally for the Xbox 360, PC, Mac, Linux, and PlayStation 3.
Highwire Games unveils VR-centric 'Golem' project for PS4 Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:59 AM PST The Jewish folklore origin of the Golem has basically lost all meaning, and is now shorthand for "rock monster." And that isn't stopping Highwire Games from crafting a new game using the titular creature, as it has just announced the Golem project live at PSX today in San Francisco. We don't know a whole lot about it, but the trailer above should fill you in on the basic concept -- connecting with an avatar via VR. Wasn't there a movie about that once with the husband from Lost in Translation?
Bit.Trip collection coming to PS4, PS3, Vita Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:56 AM PST All six of Choice Provision's original Bit.Trip games now available on PlayStation systems, Sony announced today during its keynote address at the PlayStation Experience in San Francisco. The collection will support both cross-buy and feature cross-save functionality for $9.99. As a massive fan of the Bit.Trip series from its humble beginnings on WiiWare, I can't wait to take the games for another spin on PS4 and Vita and sink hours of my life into them all over again.
Skip the microtransaction-laden Uncharted 4 multiplayer, and watch more campaign footage Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:54 AM PST In this newest video straight from Sony's PSX event, Nathan Drake is reunited with his ol' brother Sam by way of the events that unfold in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. The clip confirms branching dialogue options for the game -- though neat, I don't expect a whole lot here, as the series is an action setpiece show at heart. I'm pretty interested in the campaign despite my disappointment with Uncharted 3, truth be told, as the multiplayer beta hasn't really grabbed me so far.
Final Fantasy VII remake has contextual crouching, more action-y combat Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:50 AM PST [extremely nerds voice] "You're doing this for the planet, same as us!" There's a bit of actual, early gameplay from the Final Fantasy VII PS4 remake announced at E3 this year. You can see a bit of the, "more realistic gameplay" they're said to be going for with a more dynamic, Final Fantasy XV style game, unless it's more turn-based than it looks coupled with dynamic angles and auto movement (like Final Fantasy XIII). There's contextual environment stuff like in the original, which is pretty cool, though it looks less doofy than jumping. But I always worried about a potential remake losing the original level design, which features way more verticality than most JRPGs, so it's cool that some of that seems intact. Plus, Barret just walking around cool-like in shades. We'll get the trailer up when it hits Sony's YouTube, until then follow along with the keynote here.
Epic is making a MOBA called Paragon for PS4 and PC Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:47 AM PST Gears of who? Epic Games' new ploy is getting in on the crowded moba space with Paragon, a PS4 and PC game just announced at the PlayStation Experience. "Paragon is the MOBA from Epic Games that puts you in the fight with explosive action, direct third-person control, and deep strategic choice. Choose from an ever-expanding roster of unique Heroes, earn cards to customize their abilities, and lead your team to victory." There will be an open beta during summer of 2016 and paid Early Access spring 2016.
Destiny's a racing game now too Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:46 AM PST Destiny, a shooter that everyone was down on in 2014 and then very high on in 2015, isn't just a shooter anymore. It's also a racer. Bet you didn't see that coming. Sparrow races are going to be a part of Destiny on December 8 in the Taken King add-on. It's free content for anyone who owns that expansion. Although, it's only expected to last for three weeks. Also, new Iron Banner gear will be available for PlayStation players. It's an interesting and unexpected announcement to be sure. We don't know much about it yet, but we'll see it on the PlayStation Experience show floor. Expect to hear more about it from us before the weekend's over.
New Ni no Kuni coming to PS4 without famed animation house Studio Ghibli Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:42 AM PST I was just thinking recently about how quiet Level-5 has been with Ni no Kuni since 2013's Wrath of the White Witch and, well, there's that. During the PlayStation Experience, Namco Bandai (its international publisher) announced a follow up role-playing game for PS4, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. It, "features an all new cast of charming characters, an emotional storyline, and innovative gameplay design," so gone is milquetoast Oliver, replaced with the goofy-haired Evan, the boy king. He even has the red cape. Roland, this time, is the visitor from another world -- an adult (I think?) and less scruffy Swaine stand-in. And then there's that kick ass fighting woman who dies, which is a bummer. It all looks quite nice, but famed animation house Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, The Cat Returns) doesn't appear to be involved this time around, though Level-5 is using the same visual style from the last collaboration, as well as Ghibli collaborator Yoshiyuki Momose on character design. Frequent Ghibli composed Joe Hisaishi, who did the music for the last game, is also doing the music this time around (it's great!). Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino will serve as story and general director. Plus, Rat King insurrection!
Dog fighting Ace Combat 7 announced for PS4 Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:37 AM PST If you have a jet-shaped hole in your heart, boy oh gee golly gosh do I have news for you. Ace Combat 7 has just been announced for PS4 at the PlayStation Experience in San Francisco. Bandai Namco will be bringing the series' aerial combat to the PlayStation 4 with Unreal Engine 4 and an environment renderer called trueSKY. Ace Combat 7 will utilize PlayStation VR in some as-yet-unknown manner. Homoerotic glances at your co-pilots? One can hope. What I'm really excited about is a potential sequel to the best QTE ever.
Ubisoft's Eagle Flight is a PS4 Exclusive Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:33 AM PST A couple months ago, Vikki wrote about this video where Ubisoft put a camera on a bald eagle to promote Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Looks like that same footage was used for Eagle Flight, Ubisoft's new PlayStation VR game where you can fly with over cities with your friends. I'm not quite sure how it'll play, but I'm definitely putting a fan in front of my face to feel the wind in my hair if I try it out.
The Modern Zombie Taxi Co. shows why you should stick to Uber Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:33 AM PST Two years ago at BitSummit, I saw a game called Modern Zombie Taxi Driver. It was a neat little VR game that I never really thought would turn into anything. Now, at PlayStation Experience, it has been slightly rebranded and is sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in gaming. Modern Zombie Taxi Co. is coming to PlayStation VR in 2016. It's a game where you are the undead and you chauffeur the undead. Also, you run into the undead to make sure they are even more undead (or is it just more dead?). It's basically VR Crazy Taxi, and that's perfectly fine.
Rez Infinite coming to PlayStation VR Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:28 AM PST See that nuts, Daft Punk style light up suit in the grainy stream footage screenshots? That's Rez's Tetsuya Mizuguchi playing Rez Infinite, which just announced for PS4 and PlayStation VR. I will be sick everywhere and it will be great. (I've only gotten nauseous once in VR, but I can't remember trying anything as fast and trippy as Rez.)
Hitman GO coming to PS4 and PS Vita Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:22 AM PST
Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:22 AM PST There's a reason Clank has spent a decade being Ratchet's sidekick. He kind of owes him. Ratchet saved his little robot life, after all. At PlayStation Experience, Insomniac Games took the stage to show a cinematic from the upcoming title about how the two met. It involves a starry night and a fiery crater. It was love at first site for these dudes. And, a little later, there's a disco floor. You can learn more about that on April 12, 2016 when the game releases.
Fat Princess Adventures is available today on PS4 Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:15 AM PST Fat Princess Adventures is out now on the PS Store for your consumption. This time it looks to be more Gauntlet than tower defense, but looks like it could be fun for cake-themed parties. I haven't had breakfast yet, and the idea of cake is both nauseating and appealing. If you purchase the game before December 15, you'll get the "Weapons of Might" DLC for free.
Brutal is ASCII as a full 3D action game for PS4 Posted: 05 Dec 2015 05:07 AM PST Stormcloud Games just announced Brutal at the PlayStation Experience, stylized as Brut@l, but I refuse to acknowledge that beyond one instance, for posterity. It looks like a co-op, action experience a la Gauntlet, but with an even more ancient style and influence. "Choose your hero: Ranger, Mage, Warrior or Amazon then descend into a procedurally generated world constructed entirely from ASCII," the official description reads.
Yakuza 5 comes west next week, Yakuza Zero confirmed for PS4 Posted: 05 Dec 2015 04:58 AM PST Yakuza 5 is coming to PS3 December 8 and Yakuza Zero is also coming to the west on PlayStation 4, Sony announced at the PlayStation Experience. SEGA's Yakuza 5 missed its mid-November release date after being announced for a western release at last year's PlayStation Experience. Yakuza Zero is a prequel set in the '80s that came to PS3 and PS4 in Japan earlier this year.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered is coming to PS4 March 2016 Posted: 05 Dec 2015 04:53 AM PST We've known for some time that LucasArts' much-loved Day of the Tentacle is getting a remaster via Double Fine, but now we have a release window. In March 2016, you won't have to dig through your garage past all the old Playboy magazines to find your old LucasArts discs like I do. I just realized I haven't played this game in literally twenty years. I'll have to fix that.
New Psychonauts coming to PlayStation VR Posted: 05 Dec 2015 04:52 AM PST Today at the PlayStation Experience in San Francisco, Double Fine announced Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, a virtual reality experience made exclusively for the PlayStation VR platform. Rhombus of Ruin tells the story of what happens after the events of the original Psychonauts, which left players on a cliffhanger, bridging the gap between the original and its upcoming sequel.
Double Fine is remastering Full Throttle too Posted: 05 Dec 2015 04:50 AM PST Double Fine's sure working that nostalgia angle. At PlayStation Experience, Tim Schafer took the stage and revealed that the studio's working on a Full Throttle remake for PS4 and Vita. There's no word on a release date or anything like that. In the past year, Double Fine has gone full throttle (boo!) on revisiting older projects. Earlier this year, Grim Fandango: Remastered was released. At The Game Awards 2015, Psychonauts 2 was announced. And, at PSX last year, a Day of the Tentacle remake was revealed, which, is now set for March 2016. If it ain't broken, I guess...
Last Street Fighter V launch character plus first year of DLC fighters announced Posted: 05 Dec 2015 04:35 AM PST Capcom and Sony just announced a new character for the console-exclusive Street Fighter V (PS4, PC) and he is the final launch character for the fighter, cementing the opening day roster. F.A.N.G. has long sleeves, looks like an XCOM Thin Man, and "utilizes a tricky and deceptive fighting style," because he is evil. Capcom also announced the first six post-launch characters coming as DLC in the first year: Alex, Guile, Balrog, Ibuki, Juri, and Urien. All are earnable for free via gameplay, but there's a 2016 Season Pass going on sale today if you want to buy them outright.
The original Final Fantasy VII is now available on PS4 Posted: 05 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST Just after showing some actual gameplay of the Final Fantasy VII remake at PlayStation Experience, Yoshinori Kitase and Tetsuya Nomura came to the stage to announce that the original game is now available on the PS4 for $10.87. How 'bout that remake footage, though?
The first Call of Duty: Black Ops III DLC is coming in early 2016 Posted: 05 Dec 2015 04:26 AM PST Black Ops III getting stale yet? It has only been out for a month so I'd hope not. But, if it is, reinforcement is coming soon. Toward the beginning of Sony's PlayStation Experience keynote, it was revealed that the Awakening add-on is slated for early 2016. Of course, Sony's getting its money's worth for its sizable investment and touting it as a 30-day exclusive to PS4. Money talks.
