Miriam looks a bit cold in these new Bloodstained screenshots

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

The November update for the Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Kickstarter has been posted, with a few new screenshots in tow.

Said screenshots show off lead character Miriam in a wide shot of a scene before showing her sitting in a nearby chair proudly displaying around half of one her boobs. Gives me the shivers just looking at it; I couldn't imagine having my chest exposed this time of year in a castle, unless the owner has hella bank to afford the heating bill.

The screenshots are made to show off a couple of different shaders the team has been working on. "This shader contains lighting, fog, and character brightness effects designed to give it a 2D look," says Koji Igarashi on the shader used in the following shots. "I feel bad about how much I demanded from the development team!"

PlayStation Experience is this weekend

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST

Oh, hey, PlayStation Experience starts tomorrow.

The full livestreaming schedule isn't up yet, for those of us watching from home, but Sony has a partial listing of what's happening and when. The keynote kicks off at 10:00am Pacific on Saturday. No sleeping in! From there, expect to see live game demos and interviews, via Twitch, from noon to 9:00pm and then again on Sunday from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Saturday's panels include "PlayStation VR and The Future of Play" at 2:00pm, "The Future of Storytelling" at 6:00pm, and "Fighting Games: The Next Generation" at 7:00pm. That last one is Photoshop worthy.

Capcom Cup 2015, an Ultra Street Fighter IV tournament with $250K up for grabs, is also a part of PlayStation Experience. The opening ceremonies begin at 10:00am on Sunday.

I'm not sure what all to expect as far as announcements go, but there have to be at least a few surprises lined up, right? At any rate, Destructoid will be in attendance for hands-on coverage.

Eight PS2 games are headed to PS4 tomorrow

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST

Yesterday, Sony inadvertently published a video for Level-5's role-playing game Dark Cloud ahead of its (unannounced) release on PlayStation 4 via emulation. Now, we have our confirmation.

Eight souped-up PS2 titles are headed to PS4 tomorrow:

  • Dark Cloud — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
  • Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
  • The Mark of Kri — $14.99
  • Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
  • War of the Monsters — $9.99

These and future titles will support 1080p (up-rendered), Trophies, and PS4 system features like Remote Play, broadcasting, and Share Play. Looking ahead, more PS2 games will be made available on a "regular basis," including PaRappa the Rapper 2 and The King of Fighters 2000. Also, based on recent ratings board listings, Dark Cloud 2 and Ape Escape 2 (good lord, yes!).

I'm not thrilled about the prospect of paying for some of these games again, but if it means improved image quality and performance, and having quick access on my current console of choice, I'll do it.

Here's what Dark Souls III cooked up for PlayStation Experience

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST

Hope you didn't forget how to use a shield after all the Bloodborne-ing this year. From the looks of it, you'll need all the blocking and rolling you can muster to best Dark Souls III's many lumbering foes. They're even in a flower garden! Is nothing sacred?!

Right on the heels of its finally confirmed April 12 release date, From Software shows us what it has in store for this weekend's PlayStation Experience. This fantastic footage is lousy with creepy cliffsides and a terrifying Tolkien-esque Ent-like abomination. Too bad Namco and From Software are hiding it from us for another four months.

The 'Nintendo in-print' Holiday gift guide

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST

While much of modern society has moved on to the world of "electrons and information", there are two demographics that still eat up the printed page: kids and old people. Interestingly enough, these are also the two age groups who often love Nintendo the most. With kids, we can guess that Nintendo's general rejection of most things edgy, gritty, and grumpy is a major selling point. For older adults, the appeal is probably tied closer to longstanding attachments and the appreciation of the little things, though I'm sure it's different for everyone.

With the holidays fast approaching, and the knowledge that print publications and Nintendo games often share the same audiences, we thought it would be fun to look at some of the better Nintendo-oriented publications to see print this year. If you're looking for the perfect gift for the Nintendo fan who has everything, or if you are that Nintendo fan and you're not sure what to tell people to buy for you, then this list was made with you in mind.

They call him Stompy McBigstompers, the best stomper in the land

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST

My trip to see Far Cry Primal wasn't completely filled with previews and interviews. I sto[m]pped working for a few minutes to see this giant dude crush stuff. Holiday decorations, gingerbread houses, and guitars were no match for this grade-A stomper.

In between stomps, I reflected on my career arc that led to this particular moment in time. This job's weird, man; video games are weird.

Rock Band 4's newest mode gets harder as you get better

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST

As a part of the December 8 update to Rock Band 4, the game's most adept and hardcore players will get a new challenge that requires their finely honed skill set. Harmonix is introducing Brutal Mode to the game, a variation on standard Rock Band gameplay where it gets tougher the better you perform.

In Brutal Mode, notes disappear as they float down the path. But, it's still on you to play them in time, even though they're invisible when they eventually reach the bottom. There's an invisible barrier tied to the crowd meter that determines when the notes disappear. If you're playing really well, you might only get to see notes for a fraction of a second; if you're on the cusp of failing, they're stay visible almost until it's time to play them.

While it's still four days from release, Brutal Mode seems like a way to place more emphasis on the songs in Rock Band. It'll require less visual coordination, and instead rely on feeling the music, so to speak.

Brutal Mode is a challenge only for the most dedicated Rock Band players. The tracks can't be played on anything less than expert difficulty, and the entire band has to be playing the mode at the same time. In the event that a song is cleared, crimson stars are awarded -- a blood-red monument to the blood, sweat, and tears you put into besting Rock Band 4's toughest challenge yet.

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime remembers Iwata

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST

"Mr. Iwata, I hope you're smiling right now."

The standout moment from last night's The Game Awards 2015 was a tribute to late Nintendo CEO and all-around remarkable human being Satoru Iwata, who passed away in July.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé took the stage to give a touching speech in remembrance of his "fearless" boss, a man who "clearly was unique in the fullest meaning of the word."

Konami gives Hideo Kojima an entire hour of outdoor time (Fauxclusive)

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST

Saying it's not the monster the media has made it out to be, Konami confirmed today it let Hideo Kojima out of his cell for one whole hour as a reward for his win at The Game Awards.

Kojima and his team took home the award for Best Action/Adventure game last night for the blockbuster game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. He was not allowed to attend the ceremony after guards found extremely long-winded escape plans hidden under his bunk during a cell check.

Kojima reportedly spent his limited time in the yard lifting weights, joining Neustra Familia and retweeting pictures of Quiet cosplayers. Sources say Kojima will also be given an extra piece of cornbread with his meal tonight in recognition of his team's Best Soundtrack win.

Friday Night Fights - Enemy bugs approaching!

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST

You hear that? After 7 years... 7 full years of peace, quiet and other Earthy stuff. They are returning. THE FUCKING BUGS ARE COMING MAN! Definitely a job for the EDF. Earth Defense Force 4.1 is hitting next week on the 8th, and I am beyond excited. The airdrop class is pulling me hard, but Wing Diver is my shit. Fencer looks badass as well... TOO MANY AWESOME CHOICES! Sorry Fallout 4, time to get shelved.

Speaking of shelving that beast of a game, I've been taking a break from it occasionally with some Rainbow Six: Siege. While I recognize most folks issues with the game, I personally love it. Terrorist Hunt is a blast and the MP is a breath of fresh air. I will definitely be enjoying it for quite some time. On that note, let's play some games together.

Amazon has the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Edition back in stock again

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 05:03 AM PST

Thanks to a bunch of cancellations, Amazon has some stock of the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Edition to sell again. For those who don't know, that's the one that come with a big old wearable Pip-Boy that operates by use of your phone.

Don't expect these to last long. Jump on it if you really want one. Bethesda has said in the past that it's not making any more Pip-Boys, so the only chance to get one is through cancellations or the second-hand market. At time of posting, this edition looks to regularly go for around $200 through those channels.

You can now remove games from your Steam account permanently

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST

If you've ever absolutely hated a game so much that you've wanted to remove it from your Steam account forever, and never look at it again, you can do that now.

Steam has just added the feature by way of its help site, and checking a few boxes will now delete games permanently. I can see why someone might do this (especially for annoying betas and the like that double-up with retail releases -- I get that OCD urge sometimes), but I wish the "hide" feature had more functionality. Also, note that deleting games in a bundle may delete the entire bundle.

I'm paranoid of deleting something forever -- it just highlights the fleeting nature of the digital era. This Dad (NSFW!) was the original "Steam Deleter" though.

Review: Kung Fu Panda: Showdown of Legendary Legends

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST

I'm not ashamed to admit that I love the Kung Fu Panda films. My wife and I went into the first expecting absolutely nothing, and came away very impressed by the antics of Jack Black, Ian McShane, and crew. Also, tapping Gary Oldman to play a badass peacock in the sequel was genius.

Of course, like all good things in Hollywood, there's a risk of oversaturation. In addition to a string of bad games, there's also been a TV series, and a third film is coming in a few months, with more in the pipeline. The good news in light of this massive flood of merchandise is that Kung Fu Panda: Showdown of Legendary Legends, a Super Smash Bros. clone at heart, is passable.

Grux is the last of Epic's Paragon character reveals

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST

I've mostly stayed away from the Paragon marketing, as I'd prefer to just jump into the beta when there's something actually substantial to see. Then again, this is the last of the character reveal trailers, so it allows me to rant a bit while we wait for the actual game to hit.

To get in on that beta, you can still sign up here. To be honest, I'm much more excited for their ongoing open-sourced Unreal Tournament project.

The Stanley Parable co-creator's new game is out today and has the voice of Rick and Morty

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST

Crows Crows Crows, the new studio formed by The Stanley Parable co-creator William Pugh, just released its first game on Steam for free called Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and the Terribly Cursed Emerald: A Whirlwind Heist. It features the voices of comedian Simon Amstell and the voice of both Rick and Morty, Justin Roiland.

If you're still reading and not frantically downloading the game, why? But if you need more convincing, let me tell you a bit more without spoiling anything.

Microsoft: Xbox One backward compatibility on a 'monthly cadence', December details 'soon'

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 02:45 AM PST

I've been taking advantage of the Xbox One backward compatibility option weekly since it was released. Every so often I'll jump into my game library and go "oh yeah I have that!" and play it. The PDA Games in Alien Hominid HD are a perfect example.

Thankfully, Microsoft's Mike Ybarra has noted that updates will come with a "monthly cadence." December isn't going to go unnoticed too, as a rundown for this month will come "soon." There are still a few announced titles slated for the service, like Halo: Reach and BioShock Infinite.

Lara Croft goes on an acid trip in the Rise of the Tomb Raider 'Baba Yaga' DLC

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST

Rise of the Tomb Raider didn't get nearly enough respect, but that's partially on Microsoft and Square Enix, who divined the odd "is it or isn't it a timed exclusive" strategy that's confused people for months now. The Baba Yaga DLC looks cool though, and PS4 and PC owners will likely get it in a GOTY edition of sorts, so it'll work out for everyone in the end.

Dead family member? Check. Creepy creatures? Check. Hallucinogenic imagery? Oh you know that's a check. The DLC will debut in January on Xbox One, and will add "hours of gameplay" according to Microsoft.

World of Warcraft's latest alpha build adds Cloud NPC, next to Aeris

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 02:15 AM PST

The Aerith NPC has been located in the Dalaran area in World of Warcraft for some time, but based on the latest Legion expansion alpha build, she now has a little buddy to accompany her. The Blizzard team has tons of nods like this, but it's always interesting to see another gaming homage included.

For those who haven't seen it yet, I took the new Demon Hunter class for a test drive recently, which you can watch below. Legion is still set to debut in mid-2016.

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is still happening, here's the latest footage

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST

Shaq made good on his word and debuted the Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn trailer last night at The Game Awards, and it's...something. While the developers have maintained that it will feature one-on-one fighting, it seems to also be a beat-'em-up now, based on the footage near the end of the video. Also, there's absurd elongated giant appendage attacks, and nazis. This game has the potential to be really awesome or really bad -- not a whole lot of room in-between.

The craziest part of this trailer is the clearly unstable dude who has a giant vat of sizzurp attached to his back.

Dark Souls III now has a confirmed US release date of April 12

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 01:02 AM PST

In its new "Darkness Has Spread" trailer, Namco Bandai has confirmed the final release date of Dark Souls III -- April 12, 2016. Before this, the publisher had a nebulous "April" date set. It will launch on March 24 in Japan.

For those who aren't aware, this may be the last game in the Souls series for the time being. I really enjoyed the build I played earlier this year (it was basically the beta), and have high hopes for this, but I hope this isn't the last we see of Souls.

Bandai Namco has also revealed the pricing schemes for both launch editions.

Uncharted 4 introduces the formidable Nadine Ross

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST

Nathan Drake has fought plenty of worthy foes in his adventures across the Uncharted universe, and Nadine Ross looks like no exception. She'll be featured in Uncharted 4 next year, and seems to be a boss fight of sorts.

In this scene, Nate is somewhere he "isn't supposed to be" -- oh that wacky Nate! -- and Nadine happens to come across him. It feels like a frenemy type of situation, like she's after the same thing as him and isn't inherently evil, but we'll see.

Namco is partnering with Hooters in Japan to open up an arcade

Posted: 04 Dec 2015 12:30 AM PST

I've already professed my love for Japanese arcades, having visited some for the first time a few months back, but this is something else entirely. Namco Bandai is reportedly teaming up with Hooters to bring a "Gaming Barside-B" concept arcade to Japan.

It will open up on December 18 in Shibuya, and will feature "all you can eat and game" for 30 minutes, priced at 1,500 yen, with a 500 yen charge after that. For those who aren't aware, that's not a terrible price (1,500 yen is roughly $12 US, so a full hour would be roughly $16) -- if the food is edible, of course.

I love how the promotional images feature ghost people. This image here is particularly hilarious, as half of the people involved look bored, outside of one girl with a trucker hat seemingly screaming at a mug of beer. Marketing!

Here's when you can play This War of Mine: The Little Ones on PS4 and Xbox One

Posted: 03 Dec 2015 08:00 PM PST

This War of Mine: The Little Ones will launch on PS4 and Xbox One on January 29, 2016.

"This War Of Mine: The Little Ones provides an experience of war not from an elite soldier's point of view but from the perspective of a group of civilians that are trying to survive," writes Deep Silver.

"Struggling with a lack of food, limited or no medical supplies and under the threat of constant danger from the world around, players will need to make life-or-death decisions just to make it through another day."

Here, watch this very depressing trailer:

The Shovel Knight amiibo is coming to Europe almost a month before North America

Posted: 03 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST

Jeez, we haven’t had any amiibo-related news for at least uh... five minutes now? These minutes have been dark, grim, and uncertain times, but fear not my friends! Shovel Knight, of Shovel Knight fame, is here to save the day.

As announced on the Yacht Club Games site, the Shovel Knight amiibo will be launching in Europe first, with a release date of December 11 and a cost of €14.99 or £10.99. For those in North America, you’ll have to wait almost a month, as it is launching on January 8 for $12.99.

The decision to launch in North America later than Europe was apparently influenced by availability. Releasing in North America later gives them time to produce enough for them to be available, rather than rushing out an international launch during the holiday period and running out of stock.

The amiibo will unlock a ton of new content for Shovel Knight on Wii U and 3DS, such as the ability to make your own custom Knight and level them up through treasure and relics. Your knight will be playable on both Nintendo platforms, which handily means they’ll be compatible with the Wii U exclusive co-op mode, which is also unlocked by the amiibo.

If you’ve already played the main game to death, there will also be some new challenge maps. Five solo maps will be available for 3DS and Wii U, while the five co-op maps will only be available for Wii U.

The decision to lock this much content behind an amiibo purchase has been a controversial one ever since it was announced. While it’s not much different from just buying DLC, the notorious scarcity of amiibo, and the fact Shovel Knight is available on more than just Nintendo platforms, has earned it some pretty valid criticism.

Still, if you want to see what’s new when you eventually get your Shovel Knight amiibo, there’s a very fancy trailer up top.

Have a video of hundreds of flexing Machoke

Posted: 03 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST

I don’t know what The Pokémon Company and Japanese fan club Pokémon Daisuki Club are doing, but I love it.

Recently they launched the Kairiky Gym website, a site devoted giving us all the information we never asked for about the big, buff Machop family of Pokémon. What do they do with their spare time? Do they have jobs outside of fighting? Do Machamp's four arms get in the way? These are the big questions, and Kairiky Gym has been giving us the answers we've so painfully needed.

Last week we had a shocking revelation. We found out that what we all thought were little black undies that Machoke and Machamp wear aren’t actually clothes at all, but simply markings on the skin. The belt’s real, though; that’s to contain their ultimate fighting poke-power, duh.

This week, we’ve been introduced to the Gorky Moving Company, which operates in the Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kalos regions. Ever wanted to learn more about the friendly Machoke helping you move in to your house at the start of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? What are their lives like? Are they happy? Do they enjoy their work?

Well too bad, here they are flexing with very little context instead. Enjoy.
