| Yacht Club says finding a Shovel Knight amiibo 'shouldn't be a problem' Posted: 31 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST Like many Shovel Knight fans and amiibo collectors out there, I was dismayed to see pre-orders for the upcoming Shovel Knight amiibo sell out so quickly after being put up for offer on Amazon. According to Yacht Club Games, this may not portend of shortage issues to come. A Yacht Club rep has informed us that "There should be a good supply [of Shovel Knight amiibo] at retail for launch on January 8th, and it shouldn't be a problem finding them. And if it is a problem, there are big shipments coming in every week after that!" This particular Yacht Club rep went on to say that they're "...getting them from the store like everyone else. That's how much I trust they'll be there!" So far, the retail-ready boxed version of Shovel Knight has been relatively easy to find, so it stands to reason that the Shovel Knight amiibo may also end up being a common sight. It's nice to see the Yacht Club stand against instilling fear in consumers in order to create demand. That tactic may breed short term profit, but it leads to long term resentment and alienation in the end. Just as T.C. eventually had to tell Mona to get herself together and start treating him different, Nintendo is going to have to start making amiibo consistently easy to acquire if they want their fans to stay loyal. |
| Cblog End-of-Year Recaps 2015: Definitive Edition Posted: 31 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST [I'd like to thank all recappers, past and present, on their work recapping the cblogs. They give the community's blogs a second chance for people who tend to miss great stuff, whether they're hung over, working late, or just binged on a game too much. Also, kudos for this year's End-of-Year Recaps go to ShadeOfLight. The madness of the old gods that is composing this monster has touched me, Pixie, and now you too Shade. MADNESS I SAY! ~Strider] Hello again and welcome to the annual Cblog Recaps Year in Review! That's right: it's that time of year again when your faithful Recappers look back on a year of quality Cblogs to highlight the blog of the crop, the blog de la blog, the very best like no blog ever was. Before we get to that though, we would like to extend our thanks to the community managers who continue to keep us loose cannons in check, and to everyone who keeps the site running. Destructoid is a home away from home for a lot of us, so we're very thankful for every gear in the system. |
| Modders are bringing multiplayer to Just Cause 3 Posted: 31 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST If you expected the modders responsible for giving Just Cause 2 multiplayer to do the same thing for Just Cause 3, well, you aren't going to be disappointed. A month after the game's release, they are already far enough into production that there's a trailer offering an early glimpse at the mod. JC3-MP isn't available for download yet, and there's no ETA, but it's coming. |
| Dtoid Designs: Mario at the Movies Challenge Winners Posted: 31 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST Before the big ball drops tonight and we close out December and 2015, I must reveal the winners of this month's Dtoid Designs contest. For December, I issued a challenge to see what kinds of wonderful levels you could make based off of a movie. The response was deafening... Oh wait, I'm sorry I mean the response was silent as just seven people entered. While that kind of turnout might put a dour note on things, I'm happy to say the quality of this month's entries did not disappoint and I couldn't wait to tell you about the three levels selected as the best. |
| The Oculus Rift's Touch controllers need more time Posted: 31 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST The Oculus Rift's Touch controllers already weren't going to make it in time for the virtual reality headset's launch, but now they're even further off. Oculus VR expects to ship Touch in "the second half of 2016," noting that the final product will be "more comfortable, reliable, and natural." The Oculus Rift is still on for Q1 2016 and includes an Xbox One gamepad. We don't know how much it'll cost yet, but the company expects pre-orders for the device to open "very soon." My only exposure to the Touch controllers was in a "play room"-esque tech demonstration -- not something as fully realized as the Surgeon Simulator demo Zack tried -- but the experience was invigorating. It didn't take long at all before they felt, rather uncannily, like an extension of my hands and each individual finger. If I end up going the Rift route (I'm undecided until we know the price point for it and PlayStation VR), I'll spring for Touch. No question about it. Update on Oculus Touch Ship Date [Oculus] |
| Killer Instinct: Season 1 Ultra Edition is free with Gold Posted: 31 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST Oh, hey, look at that! One of January's Games with Gold offerings is up early. Killer Instinct: Season 1 Ultra Edition normally costs $39.99, but it's free to download with an Xbox Live Gold membership through January 31, 2016. This package unlocks eight characters (Jago, Sabrewulf, Glacius, Thunder, Sadira, Orchid, Spinal, and Fulgore) plus costumes and accessories. If you still need to, you can download the (also free) base game over here. Even if you aren't so keen on the new Killer Instinct, you may still want to get it anyway for the packed-in Killer Instinct Classic. So much Rare on one system! |
| Enjoy this fanmade Mario Maker clone on PC while it lasts Posted: 31 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST Anyone want to take bets on how quickly the cease and desist orders will come in for this one? Super Mario ReMaker is a fanmade effort to bring the delight of Super Mario Maker to PC fans. While still very much a work in process, you can download a demo of it now if you want to try it out for yourself. It's a little janky and rough around the edges, but so far it's shaping up to be a decent facsimile of the best game Nintendo has made in years. Of course, the ambitious creator behind ReMaker wants to do more than just imitate. The goal of ReMaker is to eventually correct the flaws of Super Mario Maker and reintroduce some notable omissions in the game such as a browsable level search system and slopes. That is, if Nintendo lets the project live that long. Despite a nice disclaimer on the starting screen for ReMaker encouraging fans to buy a copy of Super Mario Maker to show their support, it's hard to imagine Nintendo won't unleash the lawyers on this project sooner or later. My bet is on “sooner.” Someone's Building Mario Maker For PC [Kotaku] |
| Final Fantasy IX is releasing on PC and mobile next year Posted: 31 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST Square Enix's Japanese website has just announced that Final Fantasy IX (which should be subtitled Vivi and his Less Cool Friends) will be coming to PC and Smartphones soon. There's no set release date, but I'm hoping it's soon. Final Fantasy IX is probably my least-replayed game in the series, and I'm not quite sure why. I loved it at the time. And that chocobo treasure hunting mini-game! I'm looking forward to losing hours to that again. Final Fantasy IX Comes to PC and Smartphones! [Square Enix] |
| 2015 recap: The ten most popular posts on Destructoid this year Posted: 31 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST Even though the tradition is exactly two years running at this point, I look forward to closing up the calendar year by writing about the most popular posts on Destructoid. It's no secret that we, Internet people as we are, have a vested interest in articles doing a lot of traffic. But, we also don't really care as much as you might think we do; we often forego the proven-to-work headline for one that we find funny (and probably no one else). So, this particular post serves as a nice little aggregation to see what really worked for us. More importantly, it gives me a good excuse to use a Mean Girls header. I should do that more often. All of us should do that more often. There's nothing here that's quite as heavy-hitting as last year's winner -- the new Call of Duty reveal (there rarely will be). Instead, it's a mix of editorial, news, offbeat stuff, and guides. We've thrown in the top five reviews separately since they're often behemoths that would entirely skew the results of this. Also included are five things that we just really enjoyed this year. It's our site and we're allowed to do that. Maybe you'll find the most popular posts of the year to be as interesting as we do. Maybe it'll be a nice walk down memory lane, a trip that starts in January and ends in December. Come stroll with us for just a few minutes. |
| Xbox One Elite controllers expected to be sparse through March 2016 Posted: 31 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST The Xbox Elite controller is pretty damn fantastic. At a pricepoint of $150 it's absurd for sure, but if you play your Xbox One (or use your PC) on a daily basis, it's worth it. Sadly, shortages are expected to continue throughout the new year. Here's the rub straight from Microsoft, by way of Tech Insider: "While the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller is sold out in many retailers around the world, we are working quickly to get more units in the hands of fans. We expect more units to arrive at retailers each week but supply may be limited through March 2016." Uh, okay. Apparently the outrage from fans that $150 was "too much" caused them to scale back production -- only to find out that more people actually wanted them. My guess is that people eventually started getting wise to the fact that they were actually good pads, and that they could work on PC, causing a surge. | Nintendo Download: Molly Maggot Posted: 31 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST I try to stay positive during these roundups, but outside of one new game (Molly Maggot on Wii U), this week is absolutely abysmal. On Wii U there's the aforementioned new indie, following by 1080 Snowboarding on Virtual Console. That's literally it folks, there's no 3DS updates. It takes me back to a simpler (and worse) time where that would be the norm for the 3DS, early in its lifespan. |
| Haunt your friend's dreams with this Kirby Hat Posted: 31 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST Based on the StreetPass Mii Plaza getup, Nintendo is going to distribute a real life Kirby hat early next year. It's only available in Japan for now, and will start hitting stores on February 25. I'm surprised it took this long, given the popularity of the Mii Plaza metagame -- maybe we'll see some real life Badge Arcades in Japan soon? Given the long reach of Kirby merch, you can probably expect this to come west at some point, though you can import it from Play-Asia for $30. | Good news, collectors: The Skylanders amiibo are going to be sold separately Posted: 31 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST For months, the only way amiibo collectors have been able to get their hands on the Skylanders figures (Bowser and Donkey Kong) have been by way of the Starter Packs for SuperChargers. They've since come down in price to roughly $40 (or less) from $75 at launch, but that's still far too much if you're just looking for the amiibo and not the game. Thankfully, Skylanders Inquirer has discovered that they will be released separately, and will retail for $24.99. Why is it so high? Because it comes with a vehicle (even though most people just want the figure), and because....money. But there is a catch -- the Dark variants are still reportedly exclusive to the Starter Packs. Luckily I was able to acquire them by way of a friend and an awesome reader. Confirmed: Nintendo amiibo [Skylanders Inquirer] |
| New Attack on Titan game has a free roaming mode Posted: 31 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST While I'm not a fan of the bloated and overhyped show, the concept of Attack on Titan is enough to keep me interested in the games. According to Famitsu, the game is going to be rather fully-featured too, with plenty of content that the Warriors games are known for. In addition to 10 playable characters (Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Krista, Sasha, Connie, Jean, Levi, Hange, and Erwin), the story will follow the events of the first season, and it will be easy to pickup if you've never seen the show or read the manga before. Additional story bits will be included though to expand on a few characters. The best part of the whole package though sounds like the "Investigation Outside the Walls" mode, where players can pick a character and go free roaming in the wild -- this seems like the grinding gametype to boost up your characters. Of course, the classic Warriors "Free" mode is in as well, where you can pick any mission with any character. Finally, fighting with allies to take down Titans is specifically noted as a semi-required tactic -- and those Titans may drop items or a swallowed soldier when defeated. As a reminder, this is the first game that Koei Tecmo is developing specifically for the PS4 -- instead of crafting PS3 first and upscaling, they'll actually be downscaling to the PS3. | The Gold Mega Man amiibo is back up at Best Buy Posted: 31 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST Shortly after the Gold Mega Man amiibo was unveiled, pre-orders sold out nearly everywhere online -- you still can't find it at places like Amazon. But late last night it seems like the package popped up on Best Buy, and it's still live as we speak. It'll run you an unreasonable $49.99, but will come with the $30 game, the $13 (MSRP) amiibo, two 3DS themes, a soundtrack, and postcards. Mega Man Legacy Collection [Best Buy] |
| The Xbox One might be getting a 'Lightweight' model Posted: 30 Dec 2015 10:00 PM PST You know the Xbox One? Yeah, that decently powered AAA game console that plays huge, epic scale games? According to a rumor currently circulating, you might soon see an Xbox One that does considerably less. According to writer Brad Sams at Petri, who claims to have spoken to internal sources at Microsoft, there's a Lightweight Xbox One coming in 2016, much more in line with the Apple TV in terms of design and power. "I have heard from internal sources that the company is considering plans for a lightweight Xbox One that may only be for Windows store games and would compete with the Apple TV, but it's not clear if these plans have been scrapped." The rumor also suggests that the box would be considerably cheaper than the standard Xbox One, and would be releasing in the second half of the year. So, would you buy an Xbox One branded Apple TV competitor? |
