Bethesda will literally pay to you play The Elder Scrolls Online Posted: 03 Dec 2015 03:02 PM PST One The Elder Scrolls Online player is about to have their loyalty rewarded. As a response to its #MillionReasonsToPlay campaign, Bethesda has announced that it will be giving 1 million dollars away to a single, lucky player. Official contest rules and a detailed list of instructions can be found here, but the simple version is that active players have until January 10, 2016 to register for the drawing. If ESO dropped off your radar following release, now might be the time to give the game another go.
Why Far Cry Primal is the purest form of Far Cry Posted: 03 Dec 2015 02:15 PM PST Far Cry has always been very good at getting the player into an open world and letting them interact with nature. However, the reasons for arriving there haven't always been as strong. It's how you end up with frat boy turned tribal warrior Jason Brody. Ignoring the why and focusing on the how has felt like a necessary sacrifice for the franchise. The next title in the series' lineage shouldn't suffer the same fate because the why is wildly obvious. Far Cry Primal turns the clock all the way back to the Stone Age -- a time when the stakes were constantly survive or don't survive. Ubisoft isn't in the position of needing to put together a reason for the player's actions because that sabretooth tiger that wants to kill you is reason enough. Speaking with narrative director Jean-Sebastien Decant, he made it clear that Primal feels like Far Cry's purest form. "I think it's a match made in heaven. I think this is the original Far Cry fantasy," he told me. "We don't have to jump through hoops to justify why you're doing all the things. It's your day-to-day life to wander, gather, craft, and hunt in order to survive."
Here's your first real look at The Walking Dead: Michonne Posted: 03 Dec 2015 02:14 PM PST It might not be The Walking Dead: Season 3, but an all new trailer for The Walking Dead: Michonne is better than nothing. The mini-series was first announced back in June and hasn't seen much publicity since then. The trailer released during The Game Awards today may be short, but it packs a lot of feeling into those forty-eight seconds. Expect to see The Walking Dead: Michonne on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android next February.
The animals are the real stars of Far Cry Primal Posted: 03 Dec 2015 02:00 PM PST The Stone Age is a remarkable moment in history ("moment" meaning 3.4 million years, in this instance) because it was a period when mankind wasn't at the top of the food chain. Beasts ruled the roost and humanity had to tread lightly. The technology needed to defend against these monsters wasn't yet invented -- hell, controlling fire was a new concept at the time -- so one ill step likely meant certain death. Animals were undoubtedly the star of the show. Ubisoft's Far Cry Primal is an imagining of Stone Age events, and it rightly thrusts these creatures into the spotlight. In both the roles of friends and foes, they subvert the traditional Far Cry formula because, for once, it feels like the beasts have the leg up.
Posted: 03 Dec 2015 01:55 PM PST At tonight's The Game Awards in Los Angeles, Kiefer Sutherland accepted an award on behalf of Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid V won Best Action Adventure Game), who was not present. Speaking after the award's presentation, The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley stated "Mr. Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight, but unfortunately he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami just recently that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight's awards ceremony to accept any awards" due to his lingering employment contract with the company. Good lord. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, this being just the latest in a string of embarrassing episodes for Konami, but at some point you'd figure the company would stop sinking to new lows.
Time is both the weapon and enemy in Quantum Break's new trailer Posted: 03 Dec 2015 01:40 PM PST We didn't learn much about Remedy Entertainment's upcoming title Quantum Break at The Game Awards this year, but the world premiere trailer did a great job of showing off how great actor Shawn Ashmore looks in-game. Quantum Break is toted as a game that transcends mediums; the game plays along side an interactive TV show that offers a look at two sides of the same story. Unfortunately, the new trailer doesn't showcase this duality and instead focuses entirely on the cinematic elements of the game. But hey, Shawn Ashmore. Quantum Break is still on track to release as an Xbox One exclusive April 5, 2016.
Rocket League is finally coming to Xbox One Posted: 03 Dec 2015 01:39 PM PST Xbox owners might be a little late to the pitch, but at least they'll get their chance to haphazardly ram their cars into giant soccer balls. Rocket League will make its way to Xbox One at long last. There's no word on when Rocket League will make its Xbox One debut, but the news doesn't come as a complete surprise. A few days ago, it was discovered that the game had been rated for Microsoft's console. The indie phenomenon has already taken PC and PS4 by storm this year. Earlier tonight, the game won Best Independent Game at The Game Awards 2015. It beat out the likes of Undertale and Axoim Verge. Strong opposition, but Rocket League scored the goal and brought home the hardware.
Shadow Complex Remastered out early next year, but you can download it free on PC right now Posted: 03 Dec 2015 01:32 PM PST Shadow Complex is finally getting that remaster everyone sorta expected. Woo-hoo! I remember enjoying it back when it was an Xbox 360 exclusive, so it's nice that anyone who owns a PS4, Xbox One, or PC will get to try it out early next year. It's also free for PC during the holidays if you go to shadowcomplex.com right now. It says it's the fully remastered version, but we'll let you know if there's a catch. So far it seems like all you have to do is download the Epic Games installer. The servers are probably getting hammered right now. Good luck! Hopefully this leads to a sequel.
Harmonix is doing Rock Band VR for Oculus Rift Posted: 03 Dec 2015 01:20 PM PST As announced this evening during Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards, Harmonix and Oculus are partnering for Rock Band VR. A rough clip with first-person footage of a player holding a guitar was shown, as well as a bit between Oculus founder Palmer Luckey and the band DragonForce. He wore flag pants, you guys. The Oculus Rift launches in Q1 2016, and Rock Band VR will be out sometime next year.
The Rock is pretty good at piano Posted: 03 Dec 2015 01:05 PM PST He is a multitalented man.
Psychonauts 2 partially funded by silent partner Posted: 03 Dec 2015 12:50 PM PST Tonight at Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards, Double Fine officially announced Psychonauts 2, the long-awaited sequel to the developer's now 10-year-old debut project. To bankroll development, Double Fine has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Fig, asking fans (and potential investors) to raise at least $3.3 million to support the project. While that is no small amount of money, speaking with Destructoid prior to tonight's big reveal, Double Fine founder Tim Schafer says his team will need more to finance development. "We actually need more than [$3.3 million], but that’s the amount we need from backers and investors," Shafer said. "Once we get that, like we did with Broken Age, Double Fine will be pitching in a bunch of our own money -- and then we are also working with an external partner, who hasn’t announced their involvement yet. We can't say..." When pressed on the topic of the identity of the external partner, Schafer said "It’s not a traditional games publisher, but it’s a major industry player that is going to be helping us with the next chunk of our budget," and added that "each chunk of that budget by itself would not make a game the size of [the first] Psychonauts, but all together they make it possible." Schafer didn't say how much he expects the sequel to cost in total, but mentioned the original game cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $13 million to produce. While development costs have risen steeply since the PlayStation 2 era, when the original game released, Double Fine expects to complete the follow-up in about half the time, launching at some point in 2018, if all goes to plan. In February 2012, Minecraft creator and former-Mojang head Markus "Notch" Persson expressed an interest in funding Psychonauts 2, though nothing came of it at the time. Persson said he thought the project would only cost a few million dollars, but Double Fine needed closer to $18 million. Since then, Persson has sold his company to Microsoft for $2.5 billion and purchased a $70 million mansion in Los Angeles. Given his previous interest in making a sequel happen and impressive bank account balance, he's a likely candidate to be the "major industry player" Schafer mentioned.
Double Fine is crowdfunding Psychonauts 2 Posted: 03 Dec 2015 12:42 PM PST Almost eleven years after its release, cult classic Psychonauts is finally getting a sequel. Well, it's likely getting a sequel, that is. It depends on how badly fans really want it. At tonight's The Game Awards 2015, Double Fine head Tim Schafer took the stage to announce a crowdfunding campaign for Psychonauts 2. It's being run through the new service Fig, the crowdfunding platform where backers can make actual money off of their investments. Schafer's on the board of advisors for Fig, a connection that easily explains why Double Fine didn't go back to Kickstarter where it has had multiple successes. In order to get Psychonauts 2 off the ground, Double Fine is asking for $3.3 million from fans and investors. However, this only represents a portion of the budget needed to create the game. Double Fine is chipping in some of its own cash, and it has an independent, external partner lined up too. Schafer told us that the original Psychonauts had a budget of around $13 million, but that project was plagued with inefficiencies and publisher-relation issues. We talked with Schafer last week about Psychonauts 2 and how it came to be after all this time. He told us that the advent of digital distribution drastically helped Psychonauts' sales years after release. "In the last five years, Right now, it seems as if Double Fine expects development will probably take somewhere around two and a half years, putting the game on track for a projected 2018 release. We'll have more from our conversation with Schafer about Psychonauts 2 in the coming days. Psychonauts 2 [Fig]
Batman: A Telltale Games Series is happening Posted: 03 Dec 2015 12:22 PM PST Tonight at Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards in Los Angeles, it was revealed Batman: A Telltale Games Series is in the works and coming out sometime next year. That's all we know for now!
Gone Home programmer's new game looks like a Van Gogh painting Posted: 03 Dec 2015 12:11 PM PST Johnnemann Nordhagen broke off from Fullbright a few months after Gone Home's launch. About a year ago, we got a teaser image for his new project of a wolf playing cards, but there has been radio silence since then. Tonight at The Game Awards, Nordhagen showed off Where the Water Tastes Like Wine in motion. With art by Kellan Jett, it's reminiscent of Van Gogh with its deep colors and flowy lines. I can dig it. Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is about "traveling, sharing stories, and surviving manifest destiny." Inspired by United States folk tales, it will have players traveling through the country over the course of a hundred years, experiencing stories along the way. Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is planned for Mac and Windows, with additional platforms to be announced later.
Looks like the PS2 emulator on PS4 won't work with discs or Classics Posted: 03 Dec 2015 12:05 PM PST Tucked away in the description of the leaked video of Dark Cloud's PS4 port was some more information about the PS2 emulation on PS4, and it is sure to rustle some Jimmies. "PS2 Classics and PS2-formatted discs are incompatible with the PS4 system." Translation: If you want to play a PS2 game on the PS4, you're going to have to buy it again. No word on pricing of upcoming PS2 ports, but I'm sure we will find out as soon since none of this information was intended to be public just yet.
Posted: 03 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST Hello, friends! The Game Awards 2015 are tonight. Wanna watch with us? We have salami. There's promise of ten "world premiers," music, celebrities, and yes, even some awards. In past years, back when host and organizer Geoff Keighley put these shows on with Spike, we'd all get blasted beforehand to better handle the more absurd moments and lengthy running time. Thankfully, last year's awards show was relatively low key, and while it was still way too long, we're told to expect a shorter event tonight. Progress! There's also supposed to be a Shaq Fu surprise. The Game Awards begin at 6:00pm Pacific. You can watch them live, right here.
Posted: 03 Dec 2015 11:45 AM PST Sony accidentally uploaded a gameplay video for a port of the PS2's Dark Cloud for the PS4 onto its YouTube channel before it was quickly removed. Luckily, internet cybersleuths were able to grab the thumbnail and a screenshot. According to the video's description, Dark Cloud will be up-rendered to 1080p and includes Trophies. Interesting note: "PS2 Classics and PS2-formatted discs are incompatible with the PS4 system." BradazKing and Wario64 [Twitter]
Mortal Kombat X season 2 DLC leaked Posted: 03 Dec 2015 10:30 AM PST Whoops, somebody goofed and released the trailer for Mortal Kombat X's second season of DLC a little bit early. The four-pack will include the Xenomorph from Aliens (so you can finally have that Predator dream match), Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, fan “favorite” Bo Rai Cho, and Tri-borg, a 3-in-1 character that evokes Cyrax, Sektor, and Smoke (almost certainly based on what variation you select). These characters were supposed to be revealed on The Game Awards tonight but I guess they just couldn't wait. The trailer was pulled almost instantly, but not before someone could snag a copy and repost it. It's a little rough, but if you can't wait a few more hours to see it in glorious HD, you can take a gander at the trailer below.
These Contra action figures are historically accurate Posted: 03 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST Hot on the heels of other classic 8-bit action figures such as purple Jason and grumpy Godzilla, NECA announced the upcoming release of more toys based on games we used to love (well maybe not love, enjoy? Tolerate?) as children. These figures based on the NES version of Contra are sure to conjure up all the beloved memories of savagely impossible boss fights and constant, unending death we worked so hard to drown and repress with booze and other vices these past 27 years. The figures include snazzy pixilated paint jobs and classic box art like we've seen with other releases in this line. You can pick them up sometime around April if you want to relive the glory days of hard as nails platform shooters. Really, what sells these figures to me is the little spread gun bullets you can attach to the end of their guns. The spread gun was damn near essential in some levels and it's nice to see its gallant service immortalized in plastic form. In fact, screw making figures of old video game characters, I want some toys that commemorate my favorite 8-bit power-ups. Also, notice how surly the blue guy looks? It's almost the same face I make every time I dust off a copy of Contra only to discover I was way better at it as an eight year old than I am today.
| Xbox One with free game bonus returns at Microsoft (Elite back in stock) Posted: 03 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST If you missed buying an Xbox One over the Black Friday weekend because you were busy cooking up a meal for 40 of your clan members, a new offer has turned up at the Microsoft Store. It's a today-only deal, where Microsoft will give you a free game of your choice (along with a free copy of Assassin's Creed Unity). Black Friday saw the Xbox One Elite fly off the shelves within the first few hours of it being offered, but now the Elite is back in stock and the same bonus offer applies which makes this a very good deal if you've been holding out for that particular console.

Goodbye zipper panties: Kiria wears pants in Genei Ibun Roku #FE Posted: 03 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST Genei Ibun Roku #FE (formerly Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem) is close to its Japanese release (day after Christmas) so Nintendo has put up a new overview trailer looking at aspects of the game that I do not understand because it is in Japanese. What I do understand, though, is that one of the playable characters, Kiria, has had her zipper panties and chaps idol ensemble (above) replaced with pants (below), as noted by Persona Central. It's a weird change, especially given the more revealing costumes still present (see: straight bikinis at 4:20) and that it's for the Japanese release. Maybe Nintendo wanted it a bit more family friendly.
You can buy designer Super Mario clothes for probably hundreds of dollars Posted: 03 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST Sure, you can get a knockoff Super Mario Bros. shirt with the plumber, slightly discolored, fighting Darth Vader with a Mickey Mouse head in Chinatown for $5, but ain't nothing like the real thing, baby. Nintendo has partnered with Italian designer Moschino to produce, "printed T-shirts and knitted sweaters, characterized by the graphic of video game hero Mario, along with a series of colorful bags and accessories in leather, ranging from backpacks to bucket bags, and from wallets to belts - all personalized with images of Luigi, Princess Peach, coins, stars and mushrooms that appear during Mario's many adventures." Just browsing the designer's online catalog you can find things like siq Daffy Duck sweaters, normally $850, on sale for a generous $425. Or Looney Tunes handbags, normally $900, discounted to $475. I imagine prices for the Mario apparel would be similar, so if you want to drop a month's rent on a designer Mario belt, be my guest. Moschino's Mario line goes on sale December 5 on the website; at Moschino boutiques in Milan, Rome, Paris, New York and Los Angeles; and "at the world's most prestigious multibrand stores."
That Sony Santa Monica tease was for Bound Posted: 03 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST Oh, Bound! (Psst. What's Bound?) A few days ago, Santa Monica Studio teased a game announcement with an obscured clip of someone dancing. I couldn't make any sense of it, but as some of you smartly guessed, it's a new thing, not another take on an existing property like, hah, God of War. Bound is 3D platformer from Plastic (Linger in Shadows, Datura) "designed for people with the desire to concentrate on the narrative side of games and experience a mature story." It's hard to get a sense of that from the initial trailer, but I like what they're going for, visually.
Yes! Hilarious Jazzpunk coming to PS4 with new Quake-spoof multiplayer mode Posted: 03 Dec 2015 07:15 AM PST Jazzpunk came out almost two years ago, but I still think about it a lot. The "modernist Cold War cyberpunk game" is one of the rare examples of a legitimately funny game and I'm hoping it can get a new life in the just announced, upcoming PS4 version. If you like surrealist humor, it is perfect for you. There are some secret additions to the single-player, but perhaps the biggest change is expanding the "Wedding Qake" minigame -- a "full-on parody of multiplayer old school deathmatch games like Unreal Tournament, Goldeneye, and Quake 3 Arena" -- into a full, four player splitscreen multiplayer mode, "featuring unlockable characters, new levels, and fresh implements of devastating MATRIMONY."
Nintendo's president isn't sure what 'NX' means Posted: 03 Dec 2015 06:30 AM PST The next system from Nintendo, codename NX, may release next year and include both a console and a separate handheld unit. The company hasn't said much about it yet, so it's almost all vague promises and speculation based on unnamed sources. That doesn't really change today. Speaking to Time, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima called NX "different and obviously a new experience." The hope, this time, is that it won't be quite so challenging to convince players to upgrade to the next platform like it was getting them to transition from Wii to Wii U. "I can assure you we're not building the next version of Wii or Wii U," he said. "It's something unique and different. It's something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base." There's a desire to keep Wii U owners happy -- "to make sure that they are satisfied with their purchase and continue to enjoy playing on this platform" -- but Nintendo didn't share any specifics. "[W]e can't just abandon them and say 'Hey, it's time to move on to the next thing,'" said Kimishima. As for the peculiar NX codename, he only added to the mystery. "I don't believe that there's any real meaning behind it, and to be perfectly honest, I don't know where it came from. Or perhaps [late Nintendo president] Mr. Iwata had meant to tell me and then never got the chance." 14 Things Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima Told Us [Time]
Killing Floor 2's Return of the Patriach update is now available Posted: 03 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST It's been a long wait, but Killing Floor 2's newest update, Return of the Patriarch, just went live. I had a great time blasting the new boss with the Gunslinger perk, and I'm excited to jump in and play with you guys. The launch trailer below shows the two new maps, Black Forest and Farmhouse, along with the new guns and the Patriarch himself. Tripwire Interactive is also sporting a new logo, but I'm not used to it yet. It kind of looks like a skate sticker you'd see slapped on the wall of a white-washed burrito joint. Anyway, I'll see you on the killing floor (after the VGAs, PlayStation Experience, and finals oh god).
The Dustforce soundtrack is finally coming to vinyl Posted: 03 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST It was bound to happen sooner or later. I've been giving shout-outs to vinyl releases as they pop up and, at last, iam8bit is putting the wonderful Dustforce soundtrack by Lifeformed on vinyl. Hot damn! Pre-orders opened this morning ahead of an estimated ship date of Q1 2016. The vinyl is $25, and includes a Steam key for the game and a digital copy of the soundtrack. 1,000 of them are being made. I've mentioned it in passing many times before, but this is one of my absolute favorite video game OSTs. It has played in the background of my life for literal days, at this point. Fastfall: Dustforce Vinyl Soundtrack [iam8bit]
Review: Animal Crossing amiibo Festival Posted: 03 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST Earlier this year, Animal Crossing series director Aya Kyogoku was asked why she decided to make Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival. She said it was because the team thought amiibo were cute and really wanted an Animal Crossing version of the toy. To that I say congratulations Ms. Kyogoku because those Animal Crossing amiibo figures are absolutely adorable. Now if only they had a worthwhile game to use them with.
SteamWorld Heist launches next week on 3DS, with an exclusive theme Posted: 03 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST Developer Image & Form has announced that its follow-up to Steamworld Dig, Heist, will launch next week on December 10, on 3DS for $20 ($16.99 until December 31). The other versions (PC, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Vita) will arrive at a later date. Purchasing the game before the end of the month will also net you a free theme, which will supposedly never return to the storefront after that time. For those who aren't aware, Heist is set in the same universe as Dig, but it takes a decidedly different turn. Instead of focusing on platforming and digging for loot, Heist is a strategy RPG. Copies will be out in the wild starting today, so stay tuned for more thoughts.
The Uncharted 4 beta is live, have a quick look at its tutorials and storefront Posted: 03 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST The Uncharted 4 beta is now live, and set to run until December 13. After it launched I was able to get in immediately, and was plopped into an intro section that showed off the new engine, as well as a few pointers for the multiplayer component. In short, it's the same Uncharted you know and love (or hate), with a grappling hook mechanic that can be used on select locations. For the most part I'm actually okay with this, as the third-person cover shooting conceit still holds up. As for the multiplayer itself, players can acquire in-game cash inside of a match by killing players, assisting their team, or locating treasure littered across the map. By pressing the DualShock 4's touchpad, you'll bring up a screen of power-ups that can be instantly purchased and used, like the power to summon a minion, or a magical spell. It's kooky but it works, mostly because of how diverse the abilities actually are -- like a giant totem pole that shoots out fireballs.
