$32 Metal Gear Solid V Steam copies added to GMG Winter Sale

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 02:30 PM PST

Today Green Man Gaming added a few titles to its "Best of 2015" deal roundup (a sale within its Winter Sale; inception!). Some titles like Crookz – The Big Heist are cheaper on Steam, but a number of the games are hitting new lows at GMG, including one of the top 2015 titles, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The seven titles listed below are all 2015 releases at their lowest price ever. All of the games below activate on Steam.

Confirmed: 2016 will have boobs

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 01:30 PM PST

As we approach 2016, a lot of questions linger about the upcoming year. What month will Uncharted 4 be delayed to next? Which western third-party developers will jokingly say they plan to support the Nintendo NX? How many times will Hillary Clinton say 'Goddammit America' in her concession speech to President-elect Trump?

While I can't answer those questions for you right now, I can confirm today that 2016 will indeed feature boobs.

Ark: Survival Evolved has more daily players on Xbox One than Steam

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST

Several developers have put their work-in-progress games up for sale on Xbox One. How's that initiative working out? In the case of at least one game, Ark: Survival Evolved, very well.

According to Studio Wildcard co-founder Jesse Rapczak, the "daily Xbox One player count is already bigger than on PC." A quick check on Steam shows that Ark is one of the most-played games on the platform right now with approximately 55,000 current players.

It makes sense. There are lots of similar open-world survival experiences to be had on Steam, particularly for folks willing to delve into Early Access, but not many games like this exist on consoles yet. Also, dinosaurs -- they make everything better, apparently.

The final release (for PC, PS4, and Xbox One) is supposed to land in June 2016. Until then, expect the Xbox One build to receive "updates about every two weeks," says Rapczak.

"This will eventually include highly-demanded features like split screen support, gamepad customization, UI improvements, tweaks to current game modes, balancing improvements, and all the new content that is going into the PC version."

Halo Reach on Xbox One has a crummy framerate

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

When Halo: Reach was added to the Xbox One backward compatibility list, I was mondo excited. Reach is easily my favorite Halo game, with a campaign that eschewed complex mythology in favor of atmosphere and more accessible multiplayer without sacrificing the iconic core of the franchise. Unfortunately, the game runs poorly on Xbox One -- to the point where I can't recommend even popping in the disc out of curiosity. The loading times and framerate are noticeably worse, marring an otherwise fantastic package.

Kotaku has collated a series of complaints about the game's Xbox One emulation, confirming that I am not alone. This video from YouTube channel VG Tech compares the 360 and Xbox One versions of the games, with the 360 version coming out ahead -- occasionally sporting 30 FPS to the Xbox One's 15 FPS. Anecdotally, the game ran much worse for me, especially in multiplayer, which was borderline unplayable.

Thankfully, Microsoft is aware of the issue. A spokesperson confirmed to Kotaku that the engineering team is attempting to solve the problem, with no current ETA. Considering that we've got a major holiday just on the horizon, I expect the game won't be fixed until 2016 at the earliest.

This is the second time a Halo product has launched in a poor state on Xbox One, after the hot mess that was Halo: The Master Chief Collection. (Maybe the word "launched" doesn't exactly apply to Reach, a game that was originally released in 2010, but you get what I mean.) The Master Chief Collection's dysfunctional multiplayer remained broken for months after launch, well past the game's November release and into April of the following year.

PlayStation Store's newest sale has some good deals on From Software games

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 10:30 AM PST

If you didn't get that game you wanted over the holidays (and it happens to be one of these 94 titles on sale), I've got good news for you. The Holiday Headquarters sale on the PlayStation Store has some stuff you might be interested in, especially if you're a fan of From Software.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin is $23.99 on PS4 and $19.99 on PS3 and Bloodborne is $31.99. That's a lot of somersaulting, dodging, and dying. Fallout 4 has dropped to $53.99, but it'll be some time before we see a noticeable drop in price for Bethesda's latest. I can't vouch for Far Cry 4 since I've yet to play more than fifteen minutes of it, but it's $21 right now.

There are a plethora of other discounts on PS3, PS4, and PS Vita games, which you can find here. If you have PlayStation Plus, you can knock a few more bucks off.

Review: Minecraft: Wii U Edition

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST

Minecraft is quite the success story, isn't it? It went from one man's fun project to a household name in a seemingly small amount of time. Everywhere I go, I see Minecraft-related items: t-shirts, plushies, costumes.

It has also inspired (probably) thousands of terrible knockoff games in its wake. Now that Minecraft: Wii U edition is out, I shudder to think of what will happen to quality games like Cube Life or Stone Shire!

The XCOM: Long War mod team is making its own game

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 09:30 AM PST

I always love it when the creators of a great mod strike out and make their own thing. That's exactly what the minds behind the excellent XCOM mod, Long War, are doing. The team, now branded under the cheeky name of Long War Studios, has started development on a title called Terra invicta which is (you guessed it) a strategy game about defending earth from an alien invasion. No shame in sticking to what you know.

Don't be quick to write it off as a XCOM clone, though. Given the description of the game on Long War Studios' site, and what the team was heading towards with the Long War mod, there seems to be a greater emphasis on overall strategy and theater-level planning, rather than XCOM's focus on the down and dirty tactical action of popping Sectoid heads.

Development is at a “pre-Kickstarter” level now, so don't expect anything soon (except for a Kickstarter I guess), but I know that I'll be keeping tabs on this one as it develops.

Terraria: Otherworld is coming along

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 08:30 AM PST

Re-Logic is keeping itself plenty busy with work on Terraria (content updates, mobile/console fixes, launching next year's Wii U version) and its new spin-off game, Terraria: Otherworld, which has shades of tower defense. It's being designed as "a sandbox with a purpose."

I hadn't realized it, but Otherworld was originally going to release in 2015. That's, uh, not happening. "Simply put, the game is not ready yet -- as we laid out in the beginning, we will only launch a game when we feel it meets our standards as a finished product," said Re-Logic's Loki. "Terraria: Otherworld hasn't reached that point yet, though very strong progress has been made."

But forget about that for a second, and look at this. Grappling hooks!

Why are the only interesting parts of Rise of the Tomb Raider's story buried in audio logs?

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST

Pretty boy Steven Hansen enjoyed  our Xbox One Game of the Year Rise of the Tomb Raider, saying that it was "perfunctory Hollywood boilerplate, down to the set up for the sequel, but competently done." I agree with just about everything in that review, but now that some time has passed since the game's release, let's do a deeper dive into the plot's various shortcomings.

Steven mentioned that the story was "pretty one-dimensional (even with everything wrapped up in explanatory audio logs)," but if some of those logs were given more of a spotlight, Rise would have been give some much-needed substance. From a gameplay and cutscene perspective, both games are nearly identical. Once I had wiped off all of the sugar from my teeth, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had waited two years to bite into the exact same cupcake.

Lara arrives to place, Lara is un-armed, Lara makes bow, Lara meets place's inhabitants, Lara finds that every surface is covered in rope, Lara uses her survival instincts cheater button too many damn times, Lara encounters the supernatural, Lara looks within, finds strength, kills thing.

Spoilers follow from here on out.

Splatoon's content updates will end soon, but it won't be abandoned

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST

While I was sad to hear Splatoon is about to make its final big DLC push, I have to look back on the post-launch support fondly. It has been a hell of a year for this increasingly wonderful game.

In a Famitsu interview picked up by Nintendo Everything, Splatoon producer Hisashi Nogami and co-directors Tsubasa Sakaguchi and Yusuke Amano elaborated on what's in store for 2016. Substantial updates that add things like new weapons, gear, or stages will come to an end in January, as you may have heard, but the developers will continue to work on balancing for the foreseeable future. The 24-hour Splatfest events will carry on as well, thank goodness.

The team says that as it stands, it's difficult for players to remember which weapons are best suited for each individual stage -- there's already so many. Adding more would exacerbate the situation, hence the DLC drop-off in January. Beyond that reasoning, I have to imagine these people are being tapped for other projects. Splatoon is in a good place, and the NX is surely calling.

Square Enix adds more Tomb Raider to its Humble Bundle

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST

The bonus games for the Humble Square Enix Bundle 3 have stepped out of the shadows.

Folks who buy the bundle's second tier (which is still under $6) will now also receive access to three additional Tomb Raider titles: Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld.

If you already locked in your purchase, check your account for those new Steam keys. Anniversary supports Windows and Mac, but the other two are Windows only. Sorry, Linux friends!

The Mega Man Board Game is finally coming soon

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST

I backed the Mega Man Board Game Kickstarter at its lowest level nearly two years ago, and now, it's finally ready to ship. Jasco games has announced that the final editions of the game will arrive in their warehouses today, at which point, stock will be assessed and backer copies will be shipped. After that, the plan is to move into other brick and mortar locations.

I rarely back things these days given the loose and uncertain nature of the medium, though all but one of my projects have actually delivered and not given up (so far).

Level-5 will announce a sequel to a 'very popular series' in 2016

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST

As part of 4Gamer's end of the year interview blitz, they managed to briefly talk to Level-5 president Akihiro Hino, who, among other Japanese developers, promised big things for 2016. According to Hino, "all kinds of new titles" will be announced, in addition to "a sequel to a very popular series."

Given that Level-5 has been churning out hit after hit for over 15 years, I'm pretty excited at the prospect of more of their games. In other recent news, Yo-Kai Watch recently shipped 10 million games worldwide, and the Snack World TV show just debuted in Japan -- so they're doing pretty well.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games amiibo functionality detailed

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST

I still can't believe that Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games exists. If you would have told my younger self that both characters would be teaming up for not one, but multiple games, including Super Smash Bros., I wouldn't have believed it. But here we are, with five Olympic games under Nintendo's belt.

You can get a look at the amiibo functionality in the video above, which basically amounts to cosmetic options like costumes. There's also a general trailer for the 3DS edition below if you're interested.

New 3DS XL and Hyrule Gold Edition on sale for $175 at GameStop

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST

While these aren't selling like mad compared to the Majora's Mask version, GameStop's exclusive Nintendo New 3DS XL Hyrule Gold Edition is now on sale for $25 off at uh... GameStop. The regular plain vanilla red/black versions are also on sale, but since Amazon is price matching and offers actual free shipping - you're better off grabbing from there instead.

Nintendo's latest handheld has been holding steady at its released price point since earlier this year. Short of a few odd random deals (coupons/rebate stacking), the console has rarely been on sale for under $180 -- even during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday season. This is the first time we've seen the Hyrule Gold Edition on sale.

GameStop's deal on the Hyrule Gold Edition is slightly hampered by its archaic $7 shipping and handling fee, which you can waive if you opt to pick up at a nearby GameStop instead. This deal doesn't appear to be a part of its advertised weekly sale, so don't be surprise if it expires out of the blue (and Amazon's price match will also disappear at the same time). If this is a part of an unannounced weekly sale, the deal should expire Tuesday next week.

Rise of the Tomb Raider's Minecraft-like $10 Endurance Mode DLC is out today

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST

If you've done all that you can do in Rise of the Tomb Raider, you may want to take a look at this DLC that just dropped today. It's called "Endurance Mode," and essentially adopts the core Minecraft gametype (yep, that game isn't just about building things) -- scavenge and craft by day, and survive at night when the enemies come out. The developer is billing it as an "unforgiving" mode, where you need to actually build fires and find fuel to survive, and so on. I can't vouch for it but it sounds cool on paper.

As a reminder, Rise of the Tomb Raider's exclusivity is likely going to die off soon with the PC release next month.

So, how about explaining that Steam Christmas debacle, eh Valve?

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 03:45 AM PST

::Jerry Seinfeld voice:: So how about that Steam fiasco?!

Over Christmas, Steam gave hundreds of users access to random accounts, allowing them to view purchase and billing information of random strangers. Valve clarified to the press that the issue was resolved later that day, and that "only cached information was viewable" and that "no further action was required."

Oh ok, so that's that, then! Not.

With a breach like this with valuable and private information on public display (including the last four digits of credit card numbers, which can be used to socially engineer multiple accounts across the web, and email addresses), more than a mere few sentence response is required. Users out there (myself included) are still wondering how this happened, why it happened, and what Valve is going to to do prevent it in the future. Instead, we've had several days of silence.

It's hard to believe that nearly everyone at this multi-million dollar company is on leave, and that someone can't issue a detailed statement of what happened. But as Kotaku points out, this is par for the course for Valve, and a lack of transparency is nothing new. Users on the Steam reddit are also upset, and the following help ticket, acquired by Kotaku, kind of sums up what people are going through right now.

We're waiting for a real explanation, Valve.

Firefall studio couldn't make payroll on Christmas

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST

Employees of development studio Red 5 got something worse than a lump of coal for Christmas this year; they got a note from management saying that the company didn't have the funds to make payroll.

Multiple sources reached out to Kotaku, who broke the story. Red 5 generally pays its employees every other Friday, but was unable to last week when payday fell on Christmas. Instead, several members of Red 5 reported that they received the following message from their employer:

Hi Team,

I regret to inform you that Red5 currently does not have the funds necessary to meet our payroll scheduled for today Friday, December 25. Due to this, there will not be payroll paid this week.

Red5 and The9, our parent company, is currently working to resolve this, during the holidays, as soon as possible. We are hopeful we’ll be able to resolve this and will update the team immediately.

The studio, which is located in Irvine, California, held an internal meeting this morning to attempt to explain the situation. As reported by Game Informer, it claims that the missed payments were at least partially a result of "potential investments failing to materialize." At time of writing, Red 5 employees are being told they'll be paid on December 30.

This development is the just the latest in a rough couple of months for Red 5. In November, 40 employees were laid off. Last week, "several more" were let go. The ones who are still around probably aren't in much of a productive mood, and likely have their eyes set on January 9 -- the next date that they'll supposedly get paid. We'll keep our eye on the situation too, but it sounds like Red 5 might not be long for this world.

Watch more Bayonetta and Corrin Super Smash Bros. footage

I'm still heartily enjoying Cloud in Super Smash Bros., but Corrin and Bayonetta look like awesome additions to the game in their own right. In fact, I'm replaying Bayonetta 2 as we speak because of the announcement, so they did their job. Now you can get a quick look at some more footage by way of a Japanese commercial.

I still remember anxiously looking forward to the reveals online so many years back for prior titles -- Nintendo knows how to handle this franchise, that's for sure.

CyberConnect2 is planning 'surprises' next year, please be Asura's Wrath 2

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST

Another year, another effort to sequel beg for another Asura's Wrath game.

4Gamer recently caught up with CyberConnect2 president Hiroshi Matsuyama, who promised big things for the new year. Apparently 2016 is the 20th anniversary of their studio, so they're preparing "all kinds of surprises" for it.

While Matsuyama is being a bit vague, I'm going to use this opportunity to pitch a new Asura's Wrath game. First, maybe try to make the game backward compatible with Xbox One, or even remaster it if you have time -- drive up interest again with a Steam version. Then, announced a full sequel at E3.

The overarching theme of the cycle of samsara fits perfectly into setting up subsequent games, and more Street Fighter crossover material would be great with the upcoming release of Street Fighter V. It's a perfect storm CyberConnect2, don't let me down.

The original Pokemon card starter pack is coming back in Japan

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST

Ah, Pokemon cards. When I was a kid, I missed the cutoff where our county banned them from school property, so we were free to play and trade to our heart's content. Now, those of you who live in Japan can relive those memories with the original starter pack.

On February 27, 2016, the initial craze will be remembered, complete with a 1,300 yen (roughly $10) 60 card deck, a coin (haha, remember those?), and an instruction manual. The play mat is sold separately (classic) at 5,000 yen (roughly $40).

Remember when crazy parents were saying that the cards (among other things like Harry Potter books) were demonic so they shouldn't be allowed in schools? Oh wait people still do that.

Excitebike and Birdo join the cast of Super Mario Maker this week

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST

Super Mario Maker continues to impress with post-launch DLC, and as of December 31, you'll be able to download two new costumes. Excitebike and Birdo are in, with new event courses to boot. While the latter operates exactly how you'd expect, I really dig the animations for the bike, and can see a lot of cool courses being built around it.

I love the classic tune that plays when you acquire the Birdo skin though. I hope there's more Mario 2 junk on the way!

What are your New Year gaming resolutions for 2016?

Posted: 29 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST

Just three more days (for me, I don't know about you weirdos outside of California) and 2015 is over. Any New Year's Resolutions you have that are related to gaming? I personally want to start playing Rocksmith at least 2-3 days a week for one hour a day. I used to love playing guitar but hit a plateau. I'm hoping this'll rekindle that sweet, six-stringed magic.

What about you folks? Dance Dance Revolution to melt away the egg nog? Rock Band to practice your singing voice? Are you lying to yourself about how many games you can finish on your backlog?
