This 1989 Christmas footage of a child getting an NES is adorable Posted: 25 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST For a lot of gamers, some of their fondest memories lead back to the holidays. Opening gigantic boxes to find consoles inside is one of the greatest feelings in the world as a kid, and that's just what iretrogamer decided to share with us. Taking footage from his Christmas a child in 1989, he tells the tale of young soul who wanted "a Nintendo." It's a short little clip, but it gets the job done. As for how I got my NES, I saved up my Christmas and birthday money and bought one at Sears on my own. Evidently I saw it at a cousin's house and really wanted it! Happy holidays all. |
(Updates) PSA: Steam is giving people access to random accounts, don't log in Posted: 25 Dec 2015 07:45 AM PST [Update 2: We've received comment from a Valve representative, who confirms that a caching bug was responsible for the leak. According to Valve, only cached information was viewable, and no "unauthorized actions" were performed on the affected accounts. The company also claims that no further action is required on the part of the user. Regardless of what Valve says, we urge you to make any possible change to your personal information -- as difficult as changing your two-step phone number or PayPal email address might be -- in light of these events.] [Update: According to a post from Steam community moderator KillahInstinct, Valve has fixed the problem. The Steam store is up and running as of this update. KillahInstinct claims that phone numbers and credit cards were censored "as required by law," but this conflicts with anecdotal reports that claim otherwise.] According to multiple Steam users on Twitter and NeoGaf (plus a hands-on report from Kotaku), a problem with Steam's cache gave users access to random accounts. This included phone numbers, payment information, and libraries. Steam has been taken offline as of time of writing, but we still advise caution until the leak has been plugged for certain. We'll update this story if/when we get comment from Valve. Some users reported an inability to make any changes to these random accounts, and also could not access their own account to remove their personal information. However, other users reported being able to make purchases, while some good Samaritans are removing personal information. There is something proactive you can do, however. If you primarily use PayPal as a payment method, you can remove Steam's access remotely. Just log into PayPal, go to "settings," click on "preapproved payments," click "Valve Corp" or "www.steampowered.com." and cancel the site's ability to charge your account. For now, avoid logging into any Steam-related websites. I performed a cursory evaluation of my Steam client (because writing), and my account seems fine, but I'm not going to risk it. Steam analyst Sergey Galyonkin believes the accounts are limited to a select few, but you're still better off avoiding Steam until the matter is settled. Christmas Night Fights - Friday Edition! Posted: 25 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST First off, Merry Christmas or if you celebrate some other heathen holiday, then happy that. Second, I would like to take a moment to say Fuck You to Andy Dixon, and Sir William Platt III. You both are trollops and holy fuck, I've been doing this almost a year now. Moving on to more important things, Merry Christmas from the FNF team! I have no idea what's happening there. It came up when I looked for a Joker Christmas pic. Let's play some games, I feel something hard and dedicated to Scully about to have a White Chri... oomph. Nevermind. Got a towel? |
Voice actress for Xenoblade Chronicles X's Lin talks outfit changes, how she got the part Posted: 25 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST Cassandra Lee Morris played Lin in Xenoblade Chronicles X, and she had the chance to post a video log of sorts that explained how she got the role, and speaks a bit about the controversy surrounding the changes to her outfits in the western version. It's neat learning a bit more about the voice behind the character, and I really like Lin in particular. Speaking of Xenoblade Chronicles X, I'm still playing and enjoying it quite a bit -- the world is deceptively massive. If any of you got this for Christmas today, expect to carve out some time for it! |
Captain Toad is still as adorable as ever in Super Mario Maker Posted: 25 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST We recently found out that Toad, Birdo, and Excitebike would be making an appearance in Super Mario Maker soon, but now that Toad is out today, you can check out some footage above. He's just as cute as ever, and his animation involves holding a star up in the air. Yes, he can jump, unlike his appearance in the titular Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. |
Breath of Fire 6 will be released next year on PC and mobile Posted: 25 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST We've known about Breath of Fire 6 for a while, though it was originally targeting a Fall 2015 release date. Now thanks to a new trailer from Capcom, we now know that the game will be released in February in Japan. Well, that's the PC and Android version in February, with the iOS edition hitting in March. There is still no word on a localization. You know what though? I totally forgot this was coming to PC. I really hope it maintains the legacy of the series. |
What did you get for Christmas? Posted: 25 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST Merry Christmas from all of us at Destructoid! So what did you get today? Sure, some of us are a little too old to be getting showered with presents from parents (or don't have parents around anymore), but whether it's a gift from a friend or a spouse, we'd love to see it. My favorite gift this year was from my wife -- a "Soaper Smash Bros." (ha) cartridge that is an actual bar of soap. I dig the detail in the bottom of the cartridge too -- I don't think you need to blow it in though to make it work better. |
Christmas memories with Destructoid Posted: 25 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST [Header art by MeanderBot.] If you're reading this today, you're probably on the toilet, trying to duck away from that weird cousin/uncle/stranger who always shows up on Christmas. I feel you, I'm there too. Take a deep breath, you'll be fine (and drink the spiked egg nog when you get out). But before you get back up, why not take a trip down memory lane/34th street with us? |
The PSN Holiday Flash Sale has some fine deals Posted: 25 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST It's finally Christmas here in the United States; a country known for big ol' prisons and giving video game consoles as Christmas gifts. Unless something drastic has changed in the past year, the post-dinner console unboxing remains an immutable part of American culture. You slowly pull the remote out of your sleeping uncle's moist hand, switch off the football game nobody's watching, plug in your shiny new PS4 (and wait for the updates to install), pop in that copy of Star Wars Battlefront (and wait for the game to install), and see for yourself what the new generation of consoles has to offer. And if you like what you see, Sony is more than happy to feed your new box with what I assume is the last PSN Flash Sale of 2015. There's a lot of great PS4 games on sale, like Assassin's Creed Syndicate for $40.19, Diablo III Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil Edition for $29.40, GTA V for $35.99, The Witcher 3 for $25 even, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist for $14.99. If you're looking to stretch the lifecycle of your PS3, or if you found the PS Vita you boxed way back in May, there's something for you too! Transformers: Devastation for PS3 and PS4 is on sale for $24.50, and Hotline Miami 2 with "3-way Cross-buy" is on sale for $7.50. Plenty of films are on sale as well, but I do not know a soul who buys movies digitally on their PlayStation. Still, you could do worse than Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation for $9.99. You can peruse the full list here, or jump directly to the store and start spending if any of the aforementioned deals sounded compelling. The sale ends on December 28, so feel free to wait if you're hoping for a Boxing Day PSN card. |
Valkyria Chronicles Remaster looks beautiful in its debut trailer Posted: 25 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST Sega released the debut trailer for Valkyria Chronicles Remaster, set to arrive on PS4 in Japan on February 10. The original was already gorgeous on PS3, so it's no wonder that it will look even better on PS4. Valkyria Chronicles Remaster will also include a battle demo for Valkyria: Azure Revolution, which is currently on track for a Q4 2016 release date in Japan. So far, we have gotten no word on western releases for either game. Don't leave us hanging, Sega! |
Shin Megami Tensei IV Final's new trailer is full of demons Posted: 24 Dec 2015 11:00 PM PST Atlus released the second trailer for Shin Megami Tensei IV Final today. This one focuses primarily on the demons and main characters, with bits of gameplay mixed in throughout. I never did play the original Shin Megami Tensei IV, but I might have to dive in before Final comes out. I'm liking the character designs way more in this one. The main characters in IV never really did anything for me, but these new guys look a lot more interesting. Plus, I can't help but get excited about it after seeing all my favorite demons again. Shin Megami Tensei IV Final will be coming to 3DS in Japan on February 10. No word yet on a western release, but it seems likely that it will make it over here eventually. |
