Hey Ash Whatcha Playin' rings in the holidays

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST

It's Christmas Eve, so we all have one thing on our minds: doin' it. Boinking. Bumping uglies. Taking an adult nap. The horizontal mambo. Intercourse, Pennsylvania.

The Burches have you covered, casting their gaze on sex in games like Mass Effect. Of course, just like in games, you don't get to see the wenis in this video.

Here's a fun behind-the-scenes look at Perfect Dark's development

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

I haven't played Perfect Dark since it released over fifteen years ago, so I hold it in my memory as some mythical, flawless creation. I thought I wanted to preserve that and never play it again, but then Rare had to go out and release this "Rare Revealed: The Making of Perfect Dark" video.

It's only thirteen minutes long, but there are all sorts of cool little factoids that you can bring up at your nerdy Christmas party you're going to. I particularly enjoyed watching Joanna Dark's voice actor talking about men at her children's school staring at her in disbelief when they heard her voice. Also, I had no idea that they wanted to use the Game Boy Camera to let you put your face on your multiplayer avatar. Can you imagine how many people would've taken pictures of low-res boobies downloaded on Limewire and used them instead of faces?

You can embrace the holidays with Grand Theft Auto Online's Festive Surprise update

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 10:00 AM PST

Today is Christmas Eve for those who celebrate the holiday, and many folks are preparing to see their families and drink entirely too much egg nog. They'll also get into political arguments, Uncle Billy will get embarrassingly drunk, and at least one person will practice their poker face when they unwrap a gift that they're obviously upset with.

Instead of the usual Christmas Eve antics, you could also spend some time revisiting a freshly snow-covered Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto Online. Snowball fights have made their glorious return, and all players will receive both a Santa outfit and a Fireworks Launcher with five rockets. There will also be more gifts if you choose to play on Christmas day.

PC, PS4, and Xbox One players get a few extra stars on top of the tree, as it were. A new Adversary mode called Beast vs. Slasher is now playable. As a Beast, you must flee from the Slashers using super speed, temporary invisibility, and Hulk-style jumps. Slashers are split into three classes: Demolitions, Heavy, and Assault. They get to use the regular weapons from GTA Online in addition to Railguns and Thermal Vision.

The Declasse Tampa vehicle is also available, but it's hard to get excited for a car when thermal vision and super powers are on the table. As of now, there's no date marking the end of this festive update. Better jump in while there's still snow left to ball!

Battlefront probably isn't getting any content from The Force Awakens

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 09:00 AM PST

While it would already seem like EA missed the boat if they were planning on adding anything based on The Force Awakens to Battlefront, a recent tweet put the final nail in that space coffin. Responding to a Twitter user asking if there would be any TFA DLC, the official @EAStarWars account replied with a fairly clear “no.”

Too bad. I just saw the new movie yesterday and I would have loved to see those slick new X-Wing designs in the game. Or Kylo Ren throwing a weepy temper tantrum in the middle of the battlefield, that would have been good too.

Review: Sakura Santa

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 08:00 AM PST

When it comes to holiday traditions, Christmas-themed video games aren't as common as Christmas movies or television specials. For whatever reason, be it development times, commercial titles' higher average price tag, or the youth of the medium, you're just not as likely to be sitting down at your PC or console to play a Christmas-themed game during a lull in the festivities.

With Sakura Santa,Winged Cloud (developer of last year's Sakura Spirit) and MangaGamer aim to put their little visual novel up as one of the few, the proud, the on-sale just in time for a solitary soul to boot up at Christmastime.

Star Wars: Battlefront II was originally supposed to be a multiplayer-only game

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 07:00 AM PST

Lots of folks out there have complained about recent efforts to drop campaigns from games (Titanfall, Rainbox Six Siege), but as Did You Know Gaming points out, the concept was actually rather old. Star Wars: Battlefront II, released in 2005, was supposed to be a multi-player only game, but execs apparently thought it needed a campaign so one was added -- at the cost of the director having a nervous breakdown.

From there, the Did You Know team runs through a number of canceled Star Wars games, including Battlefront III (which was supposed to have 100 player matches!) and that Darth Maul game. It's such a shame to remember that Battlefront III was "99% done," and only failed because of a strained relationship between the developer and EA.

Monster Hunter X breaks three million shipped in Japan

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 06:00 AM PST

No one can derail the Monster Hunter train.

Even though Monster Hunter X just launched last month in Japan on November 28, Capcom is reporting that they have shipped three million units. This figure includes download cards and digital sales, and is shipped, not sold.

But still, that's a crazy accomplishment in less than one month. The localization still has not been confirmed, but with all of the buzz behind Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, it pretty much has to happen.

Rock Band 4 to wipe leaderboards due to 'gnarly bug'

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 05:00 AM PST

I enjoyed Rock Band 4 for the most part, but that game shipped with a few issues that weren't discovered or sorted out until after launch. Mostly relating to physical instrument troubles, but there was another bug that folks found that triggers double overdrive, and thus, a manipulation of the online leaderboards.

To combat this "gnarly bug" Harmonix is going to reset all of the online rankings come January. Local scores won't be wiped -- just online ones. Either way, it's unfortunate that the developer has taken this long to address the issue.

Bayonetta in Smash almost raised the game's rating in Japan

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 04:30 AM PST

In her debut character trailer for Super Smash Bros. Bayonetta is said to "get wicked," but apparently she was almost too wicked for Japan.

Sakurai recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming Smash characters with Famitsu, which includes the fact that Bayonetta almost single-handedly changed the game's rating in Japan. If there's a certain degree of sexual exposure, it wouldn't manage an "A for all ages." In the end they seemingly got it done though.

As for Corrin, Sakurai says what everyone is thinking and realizes that there too many Fire Emblem characters, but after a long deliberation from the staff, the character was added in anyway. Speaking about Cloud, he noted that it was tough to truly balance his power, but they gave him a few weaknesses like a low recovery rate to ensure that he wouldn't be too strong.

Splatoon is getting the Rapid Pro Blaster tomorrow

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 04:00 AM PST

In true Splatoon fashion, new items are being added to the game all the time, and this week sees the addition of the Rapid Pro Blaster. It'll drop tomorrow on Christmas day at 11AM JST, and based on the screenshot above, it looks pretty fun.

All told Splatoon would make for a really fun Christmas gift, and I think we'll be seeing even more players online after it won so many Game of the Year awards around the web.

Sony acknowledges Vita, saves Banner Saga Vita port

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 03:30 AM PST

While Sony is busy blaming everyone but themselves for the failure of the Vita, they basically took it and shot it behind the barn. There's almost nothing coming out for it from Sony, and as I've noted in the past, Atlus is a first-party Vita developer at this point.

Strangely enough though, they answered the call of fans and have saved the ill-fated Banner Saga Vita project. The game is finally coming to consoles next year, and although the Vita version was going to be dropped, Gio Corsi of Sony (Director of Third Party Production & Developer Relations) notes that they are swooping in and saving the day to help work on it.

Nintendo Download: Super Mario Galaxy

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 03:00 AM PST

It's not a big week for Nintendo platforms, as everything is old. The original Mario Galaxy is coming to the Wii U, and Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition is getting a free update on 3DS. The latter will bring more characters into the fray, on top of a score attack element. That's basically it.

Destiny's weekly raid challenge is the Warpriest again

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 02:30 AM PST

Over the course of the past month or so, we've seen the raid challenge mode in Destiny shift to the Warpriest, then Golgoroth, and Oryx. Now it's back to the Warpriest with the exact same challenge as the initial week, which is rather disappointing.

I don't know what I expected from Bungie, or why I think it'll actually implement something interesting from time to time. Initially, I thought maybe a few other encounters like the Totems or the Daughters would have challenges, encouraging players to not just skip around or only do the challenge that week. Also, I thought it would possibly mix up the challenges for repeats and either add a new tactic or change things entirely.

Nope. It's the same old stuff, and Golgoroth will likely be up next week again. The rewards are a 320 Sniper or 320 Heavy, and an Artifact.

Kick off Christmas Eve with a picture of a meatless Pikachu

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 02:00 AM PST

Although Build-A-Bear noted that Pikachu would arrive in "late December," (or possibly not in time for Christmas), local stores are now stocked with him this week. It's $28 for the full rat, and you get a trading card with it.

If you want, you can also buy the meatless version (pictured above), sans stuffing -- they aren't your dad. You can even king size the creepiness with Pikachu wearing Charizard's skin!

Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star's Cross-Buy is broken, getting a fix

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 01:00 AM PST

Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star launched this week on PC, PS4, and Vita. For PSN platforms the idea was to implement Cross-Buy at launch, but apparently users are finding out that they're separate purchases.

Publisher Devolver Digital has become aware of the problem, and promises a fix by January 8. Good enough for me!

Ode to the Spice Orange GameCube controller

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 12:00 AM PST

The holidays are a magical time. Off work, spending time with family. Sometimes art happens. Sometimes an artist finds himself writing a traditional Shakespearean sonnet about the Spice Orange GameCube controller. Sometimes a bad video with a worse faux-thespian narration gets produced.

This is one of those times. Mind the over-enunciated iambic pentameter.

That official Pokken Tournament controller is coming west!

Posted: 23 Dec 2015 11:45 PM PST

Well, this is a nice thing to wake up to.

For its Japanese release, Bandai Namco is providing the opportunity to buy a Pokkén Tournament HORI controller, just like the one found at the arcades. Thankfully, the western version also popped up last night on Amazon for $24.99.

The controller will be released (tentatively) on March 18, 2016 -- note that the game is still set for a "Quarter 2" US release date. Also note, perhaps more importantly, that the remote will only work with Pokkén Tournament, and "will not function properly with other game titles."

Having used this in arcades I already know I like it, so I put down my pre-order.

An Xbox One port of Subnautica is in development

Posted: 23 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST

I love Subnautica, the fantastic underwater survival simulator currently being developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment. I will never shut up about how good it is, and I will never stop demanding that everybody with a decent enough PC play it. Now that game has been announced to be coming to Xbox One, the number of people I can badger into playing just shot up.

A few days ago, Unknown Worlds developer Charlie Cleveland tweeted out a photo of an Xbox One development kit, stating that it’s going to be used for Subnautica:

In further emails sent to XBLA Fans, Cleveland said that while they are indeed working on an Xbox One port of Subnautica, it’s still at the stage where it can be cancelled if things go wrong. If all goes to plan, Unknown Worlds is aiming for a March release on the Xbox Games Preview Program:

I'm not sure if I should 'confirm' this or not, but we're working on it. We always reserve the right to cancel it if it doesn't work… But yes, we're working on it! We've been accepted into the Microsoft Preview Program… Exciting stuff.

Subnautica already holds up as a massively fun game, even in its current early access state. It seems to me like it’s the perfect candidate to follow in the footsteps of Ark: Survival Evolved, which was also recently got a console release through the Xbox Games Preview Program.

More than anything, I’m looking forward to a whole new wave of people encountering the Reaper Leviathan for the first time. That’s going to be fun.

Triad Wars, the F2P spin-off to Sleeping Dogs, is shutting down in January

Posted: 23 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST

When it was announced there was to be a successor to United Front Games’ Hong Kong open world crime game Sleeping Dogs, Triad Wars probably wasn’t what most people had in mind. Instead of the involving story and memorable characters that made fans love Sleeping Dogs, Triad Wars was instead a free-to-play, microtransaction-driven multiplayer game.

Unfortunately, most people didn’t really chomp at the bit to play it, and now United Front has announced it will be shutting down the beta servers on January 20. The game and all of its microtransactions will be completely free until that date for those who’ve already bought into the beta, but purchasing the game itself has been disabled:

Since the start of the Triad Wars Closed Beta this year, diligent Enforcers have run rampant through the streets of Hong Kong, killing rivals and building Empires. During this time we have gathered immense amounts of feedback, information, and data on the game. We’ve loved seeing how you’ve played Triad Wars but we know it wasn’t right for many of you so we’re letting you know today that we are going to close the beta and service on January 20th 2016 at 12 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

For those who bought any microtransaction currency (gold) this month, refunds are currently available. Make sure you contact support@triadwars.com for more information.

It’s always sad to see a game fail, but I think a free-to-play multiplayer game just isn’t a suitable follow up for a game like Sleeping Dogs, which has many people still eagerly awaiting a full sequel. Hopefully United Front Games can bounce back from this.
